AndrewsT death is an example of the<lb />type of crime that this march is attempting to eliminate.<lb /><lb />Ida Andrews, mother of the victim, shared the story of her<lb />sonTs death at a meeting to finalize plans for the march held on<lb />March 5. : |<lb /><lb />The situation that ended with the shooting of Andrews started<lb />with a robbery incident. .<lb /><lb />Shadeek Pittman had broke into AndrewsT home and had<lb />stolen his wallet and pants. Andrews questioned Pittman about his<lb />belongings, which Ida believes were related to PittmanTs motives<lb />for the crime.<lb /><lb />Although the crime wasnTt gang related, some were trying to<lb /><lb />label it as that, according to Ida.<lb /><lb />The police department wanted to automatically say it was<lb />gang or drug related, and it was neither,? Ida said.<lb /><lb />Ida said that her son wasnTt involved in a gang. She gave the<lb /><lb />individuals who attended the. meeting an insight into what kind »<lb /><lb />of person her son was. ,<lb /><lb />Andrews had dreams of driving a truck, and eventually a race<lb />car. He also wanted to follow in the footsteps of his mother and<lb />write a book. Neither of these aspirations were fulfilled before<lb />his death. 7 |<lb /><lb />The coordinators of the event want to give young people in .<lb /><lb />West Greenville hope. They .aim to show youth that they can.<lb />fulfill their dreams, and that resorting to violence isnTt the right<lb />path to follow. .<lb /><lb />The ultimate goal is to cut out juvenile deaths and bring father<lb /><lb />figures back homes, according to Taylor. The organizers of the |<lb /><lb />march are also trying to raise awareness of the amount of youth<lb />deaths that hit close to home. ,<lb />This not only happens in the neighborhood that I live in, but<lb /><lb />_ also in other neighborhoods,? Ida said.<lb />ItTs one thing to hear something and another thing to feel _<lb /><lb />something,T Taylor said.<lb /><lb />Coordinators of the march would like more involvement from. |<lb /><lb />the community and ECU.<lb /><lb />One idea is to recruit more male students, such as ECU football<lb />players, to mentor the kids.<lb /><lb />While some students are unaware of the issues that happen<lb /><lb />in communities so close to campus, others have taken an active "<lb /><lb />approach to fixing the problem.<lb /><lb />see ENOUGH page A4<lb /><lb />The Counseling Center is worki<lb /><lb />Facility offers multiple ways to.<lb />get the help needed<lb /><lb />_ NADIAH SARSOUR<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />A close and convenient way to help students<lb /><lb />cope with their daily distresses may be walking<lb /><lb />distance away.<lb /><lb />Students are mired in their mid-term stud-<lb />ies, spring break is just around the corner and<lb /><lb />relational hurdles either with your roommate,<lb />and friend or family members are timeless.<lb /><lb />With that, the flow of stress is difficult to<lb />_ block.<lb /><lb />The ECU Counseling and Student Develop-<lb />ment Center is committed to helping students<lb />with their personal and academic development.<lb /><lb />Renita Moore is the Mental Health Outreach<lb />Specialist for the Counseling Center.<lb /><lb />She said the center offers different counsel-<lb />ing services and itTs all dictated by students<lb />interest.?<lb /><lb />Whether the consultation is conducted with<lb />a group, couple or individually, is up to the final<lb />say of the students that are being seen.<lb /><lb />The center grips on to all sorts of problems<lb />like personal issues, social issues and develop-<lb />ment of life and academic skills.<lb /><lb />_ Many students are under the impression that<lb /><lb />if they aren't able to get an appointment that is<lb /><lb />in the near future, then they will have a longer<lb />waiting time. The lecture was titled, The<lb />Function of the Humanities at the Present<lb />~Tames<lb /><lb />Lethbridge gave the subject a humanistic<lb />feel by describing humanities in ways that<lb />most would relate to living things.<lb /><lb />Everything boils down to the human<lb />element.? Lethbridge said.<lb /><lb />The humanities are a living species and<lb />can go extinct.?<lb /><lb />Lethbridge also gave the audience a clue of<lb />how humanities relates to the concepts of self-<lb />consciousness, understanding and freedom.<lb /><lb />Some of the other topics Lethbridge lec-<lb />tured on during the month of February were<lb />history, theology, and literary criticism,<lb />according to Herron.<lb /><lb />Herron said that he felt Lethbridge<lb />focused on defining what these three topics<lb />do and the lecture on humanities was more<lb />of a defense of the subject.<lb /><lb />ainherlectures havé-been such a success<lb />that interest has been expressed about having<lb /><lb />them published.<lb /><lb />Four or five people in the English depart-<lb />ment have asked if the lectures will be pub-<lb />lished,? Herron said.<lb /><lb />Herron played a part in LethbridgeTs<lb />arrival at ECU. Different departments apply<lb />to bring in someone to act as their distin-<lb />guished visiting professor.<lb /><lb />Herron filled out the application request-<lb />ing Lethbridge to fulfill the capacity of this<lb />position and the English department was<lb />chosen.<lb /><lb />During his time here at ECU, Lethbridge<lb />not only gave lectures but also taught classes<lb />and provided assistance to other professors<lb />with the department.<lb /><lb />Part of the responsibilities for the dis-<lb />tinguished visiting Rivers professors is to<lb />teach one class per semester, according to<lb />Herron. |<lb /><lb />The work of Lethbridge paralleled with<lb />some of the work of others in the English<lb />department.<lb /><lb />The department has a couple of renais-<lb />sance professors and Lethbridge is a Renais-<lb />sance scholar.<lb /><lb />The professors and Lethbridge had the<lb />opportunity to meet and discuss the issues<lb />related to this subject. , ,<lb /><lb />Many feel that Lethbridge has become<lb />one of ECUTs own during his visit. Marilyn<lb />Sheerer, interim provost of vice chancellor of<lb />academic and student affairs, said that Leth-<lb />bridge is more like a resident speaker instead<lb />of a visiting speaker during her introduction<lb />of him at the lecture on Tuesday. ,<lb /><lb />This writer may be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />~ PULSE HOUSING...<lb /><lb />" ON STANDS NOW!!<lb /><lb />Advertise with The East Carolinian<lb />and this Space could be YOURS!!<lb /><lb />Call our Advertising Department: 252-328-9245<lb /><lb /></p>

Ballard said.<lb /><lb />Atkins expressed his concern about the project, but reassured<lb />students that they are working diligently and carefully with<lb />other members on campus to make sure that they will still have<lb />adequate space.?<lb /><lb />The topic of safety emerged along with reminders of the shoot-<lb />ings at Virginia Tech and, most recently, in North Illinois.<lb /><lb />Nothing bothers a chancellor or president ofa public university<lb />more than safety,? Ballard said. It is a daunting challenge to run<lb />an open campus.?<lb /><lb />According to Ballard, $2.7 million has been reserved to ensure<lb />that money is available to fund-recurring campus safety initia-<lb />tives.<lb /><lb />The controversial topic of hard waiver insurance once again<lb />reared its head, leaving Ballard to explain why he opted to delay the<lb />decision for another year. The idea behind hard waiver insurance is<lb /><lb />that every attending student must be insured, either by their own<lb />source or by a university hard waiver. Advantages include improved<lb />health and reduction of the risk of students on campus.<lb /><lb />My main concern is the affordability of education, I donTt want<lb />to price education out of peopleTs range,? Ballard said. Quite a few<lb /><lb />students have a hard time affording higher education already, and<lb />the introduction of hard waiver would act as the biggest single<lb />increase in cost.?<lb /><lb />A lighthearted ee. arose towards the end of the session<lb />as Stephen Mason, student union vice president-elect, posed the<lb />audience question what is your favorite thing about ECU.?<lb /><lb />I just love the spirit of the students, that spirit can be seen in<lb />everything we do,? said Ballard. |<lb /><lb />I was surprised that the question of tuition increases didnTt<lb />come up, since it is such a vital part of studentTs lives,? Ballard said<lb />after the discussion. |<lb /><lb />reel rigs $01 Ons aired "<lb /><lb />were: mixed.<lb /><lb />ence members at the conclusion of the chat:<lb />?Throughout the chat some questions were answered, but they<lb />didnTt get to my question specifically,? said Malissa Sampson,<lb />freshman nursing major.<lb /><lb />My question was about some of the crime alerts that pop up<lb />on the screen. The last few months<lb /><lb />of school have arrived, spring break is upon<lb />us, and what do we have to show for it? There<lb />are the two months of outrageous amounts of<lb />work behind us, and the looming two months<lb />to come.<lb /><lb />So, what is spring oe supposed to be<lb />about, really? Oh, let me guess, you are head-<lb /><lb />ing out to some exotic place to get trashed and<lb /><lb />do'some stupid stuff that you wonTt remember<lb />and will never hear about. What is it they say?<lb />Whatever happens on spring break stays on<lb />spring break.?<lb />thinking. Where does this girl get the authority<lb />to bash the sacred pastime of using the week off<lb />from school to blow off steam and get crazy?<lb />Well, I just happen to think there are<lb /><lb />things that could better serve our character.<lb /><lb />than making a trip based solely ~on preparing<lb />to make some bad decisions. I mean, the Carib-<lb />bean is a great place to vacation, but why not<lb />just save that for summer and do something<lb />at least slightly productive over the break?<lb />Many of my friends have actually participated<lb />in the alternative spring break programs that<lb /><lb />are offered through ECU and other universi- "<lb /><lb />ties. The coolest one was definitely my friend<lb />who headed down to help in the aftermath of<lb />Hurricane Katrina. However, there are pro-<lb />grams that even send you to Jordan to do mis-<lb />sionary work for a week! I think that is more<lb />intriguing than going and sitting in another bar<lb />in another city in another country. (Moreover, they<lb />always brought back the most beautiful pictures<lb /><lb />and awesome stories about how their experiences<lb /><lb />changed their lives).<lb /><lb />When you think about it, how much is paying<lb />large sums of money, simply to do exactly what you<lb />do on an average weekend, going to change you?<lb />How are you going to remember the lessons you<lb />learned? (I mean, other than liquor before beer, but<lb />letTs face it, who doesnTt already know that?)<lb /><lb />Therefore, I challenge you"yes, you who<lb />are staying in Greenville, to those who are going<lb /><lb />to Barbados or even Antarctica"to do at least<lb /><lb />one thing for another person. A good deed, per<lb />se, whether itTs being nice to the locals if you are<lb />somewhere exotic or just helping someone pick up<lb />something they dropped. Be the best person you can<lb />be. My addiction to poker began innocently<lb />chbugh, my freshman year. Five-dollar buy-ins,<lb />random individuals from my residence hall, and<lb />you could enjoy two hours of fun for less than<lb />the cost of a movie. This was just a physical<lb />metaphor for a gateway drug; soon enough,<lb />one of the players who was a regular spoke of<lb />a-bigger game and higher stakes. As a novice<lb /><lb />in ~the game with a taste for cards, how could<lb /><lb />I pass up such an opportunity?<lb /><lb />We set out late in the night, down the empty<lb />streets of the city. At this time of the day, even<lb />Evans Street was deserted. Turning down a<lb />side road, we arrived at our destination: an<lb />unimpressive, nondescript house. After knock-<lb />ing and waiting, the faint sound of a door bolt<lb />unlocking could be heard, and the door creaked<lb />open. | half-expected the muscular figure of a<lb />bodybuilder in a sleeveless black shirt to pat<lb />us down, but was instead greeted by a tall and<lb />skinny young adult with glasses. ;<lb /><lb />As we walked inside, we met the clinking<lb />sound of quality clay and metal chips and the<lb />smell of cigarette smoke. Two standard-sized<lb />poker tables were in sight, surrounded by what<lb /><lb />looked like a selection of the most recent World "<lb /><lb />Series of Poker: college kids my age with graphic<lb />T-shirts and iPods, and older men glancing at<lb />their watches, half-expecting a phone call from<lb />their wives. As the wealthi-<lb />est nation in the world, one would think that it<lb />would go without saying that U.S. citizens would<lb />receive adequate health care. America, however,<lb />has approximately 44 million citizens under the<lb />age of 65 who are uninsured, thus not receiving<lb />sufficient health care. Money is the primary force<lb />preventing our country from granting its citizens<lb />the right of free health care.<lb /><lb />The. prime fear of a single-payer health care<lb />system is the raising of taxes; however, the<lb />increase would more than likely go unnoticed,<lb />especially since all out-of-pocket expenses for<lb />insurance would be eliminated. I donTt feel that as<lb />human beings, we should be so materialistic as to<lb />deny any person the chance to become well. Many<lb />of the people being denied assistance are those<lb />who cannot help themselves. Children and the<lb />elderly are unable to provide the means necessary<lb />to pay for health care services or insurance.<lb /><lb />Money-hungry insurance companies are also<lb />preventing the single-payer system from becom-<lb />ing a reality. Worried about receiving payment,<lb /><lb />~a person living with low income will find him or<lb /><lb />herself facing greater debt or even bankruptcy (if<lb />he or she were to seek medical attention, accord-<lb />ing to Sandy Miller, a writer for the Knight Ridder<lb />Tribune Business News). Not only is the price for<lb />health insurance hurting those with low income, but<lb /><lb />middle class citizens are also facing the problem of "<lb /><lb />losing their health coverage because it is too expen-<lb /><lb />Miller also points out the fear of bankruptcy a<lb />person with a chronic illness might have. Because<lb />insurance companies are more concerned with<lb />making profits than spreading well-being, the U.S.<lb />is allowing this bureaucracy to cause many prema-<lb />ture deaths. According to Dr. William Wewer, a<lb />Steelton physician, health insurers are an exhaust<lb />on the system. The insurers use too much money<lb />for advertising instead of health care.<lb /><lb />With this knowledge, it seems ridiculous for<lb />the U.S. to continue to allow this to take place.<lb />Our country should be providing its people with<lb />the highest possible quality of life. "<lb /><lb />A single-payer system would not only<lb />prevent thousands of unnecessary deaths, but<lb /><lb />would potentially save taxpayers money. Studies |<lb />administered by the general accounting office and<lb /><lb />the congressional budget office predicted that a<lb />single-payer system would save the United States<lb />billions of dollars. By merely eliminating all over-<lb />head writing, billing and marketing costs that<lb />insurance companies spend, about $350 billion<lb />each year will be available for the use of the new<lb />health care system that is desperately needed.<lb />As written on the Statue of Liberty: Give<lb />me your tired, your poor...? Our people are tired<lb />and poor and in desperate need of a health care<lb />system that will accommodate the needs of not<lb /><lb />only those who can afford insurance, but those<lb />who will contribute to a healthier America as a<lb />- whole. ItTs time for the citizens of this country to<lb /><lb />take a stand and help their fellow man. Worry not<lb />about a tax increase; we area country founded on<lb />camaraderie. It is our duty to force our country<lb />to provide every man, woman and child with the<lb />right of health care. .<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Nuclear weapons<lb /><lb />They only want to please us<lb /><lb />ALEX LAROCCA<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />A long time ago, people would savagely kill<lb />each other with swords and spears. Thousands<lb />would march into a field and fight over some<lb />arbitrary plot of land, or perhaps something<lb />even more stupid. Later, man invented gun-<lb />powder, leading us toward the ability to kill<lb />way more people and feel less grossed out by it.<lb />In the 20" century, all the technologies of the<lb /><lb />- past culminated into a world bloodbath leading<lb /><lb />up to the Cold War. World War II was the last<lb />loud boom of gunpowder, leaving around 62<lb />million people dead. But what helped stop such<lb />an insane bloodbath? Nuclear weapons.<lb /><lb />As I hope you know, the fear of nuclear<lb />holocaust was the only thing stopping the Cold.<lb />War from becoming a hot war. In a strange way,<lb />the worst weapon ever devised by man is also<lb />one of the greatest tools of peace, ever. I hon-<lb />estly think that without the invention of nukes,<lb />we would be living in a completely devastated<lb />world practically stripped of its population.<lb />Thanks to nukes, most of the world will never<lb />see wars like that again, and, thanks to nukes,<lb />those wars just canTt happen anymore.<lb /><lb />I can see how people would split hairs with<lb />me on this one, and I am not in favor or spend-<lb />ing lots of money on nukes or even keeping<lb />them around. But on that note, I donTt think a<lb />nuke will ever be dropped again. It is basically<lb />a consensus to think that China or Russia, or<lb />whoever, will never just drop a nuke on a coun-<lb />try. Today, having a nuke is just like having<lb />some sort of VIP status or special membership.<lb />Any country that becomes a VIP is then cool?<lb />and can hang out with the real? and important<lb />countries of the world.<lb /><lb />Who would ever take North Korea, a country<lb />so small, ignorant and poor, seriously? Well,<lb />no one, until they began claiming their nuclear<lb />capabilities. Unfortunately, North Korea did not<lb />get an official invite from China and was called<lb />out in front of everyone. Embarrassment is a pos-<lb />sibility for those who wish to become a VIP, but<lb />VIP status is really hard to get since all of the<lb />current members are really stingy.<lb /><lb />For instance, today nobody really wants<lb />Iran to get an invite to become a VIP, except<lb />for old man Russia. But what if Iran managed to<lb />get at least minor VIP status"nuclear power.<lb />Despite what you may read or hear; nuclear<lb />power is not a gateway like pot. In fact, if you<lb />want nuclear weapons, you have to be really<lb />rich and smart"two things that Iran really<lb />isnTt right now"so who can blame us for not<lb />wanting to invite them?<lb /><lb />_ Ofcourse, there are the troublemakers too.<lb />Terrorists fit into this category, because only a<lb />terrorist would steal from a VIP member and<lb />use his or her peaceful nuke. But aside from<lb />24,? and whatever other terrible shows there<lb />are, that wonTt happen. In the real world, ter-<lb /><lb />-rorists aren't allowed anywhere near the VIP<lb /><lb />lounge. <lb />PAGE A11<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />THURSDAY MARCH 6, 2008<lb /><lb />FOOTBALL continued from A/<lb /><lb />Running back Jonathan Williams will see an increased role this spring after being used mainly as a kickoff retuner as a freshman in 2007.<lb /><lb />Photo by Robyn MclWahorn<lb /><lb />together as a unit in order to be<lb />successful.<lb /><lb />Everybody just has to work<lb />together to get better as a unit<lb /><lb />. when one guy comes out of<lb />the game, we don't want to skip<lb />any beats, we want everyone to<lb />be on the same level,? Lindsay<lb />said.<lb /><lb />When it comes to Lindsay,<lb />he says he is ready to step into<lb />the position that was once filled<lb />by a sure first-day NFL draft<lb />pick.<lb /><lb />That is what I want, I guess<lb />because the team is counting on<lb />me, Lindsay said. Any time<lb />that pressure is on you, you<lb />perform your best.?<lb /><lb />While Lindsay, Norman<lb />Whitley, Jonathan Williams<lb />and Brandon Simmons will be<lb />viable options come next season,<lb />it remains just how the loss of<lb />Johnson will affect the Pirates.<lb /><lb />It has a tremendous<lb />impact,T Smith said of John-<lb />sonTs loss. You're talking<lb />about a guy that had 17 or 18<lb />touchdowns rushing, another<lb />six receiving and then another<lb />one on a kickoff return. You're<lb /><lb />talking about a guy that scored<lb /><lb />half of our points last year, so<lb />itTs going to have a impact.<lb />ItTs one of those things that<lb />when someone graduates, itTs<lb />time for somebody to step up.<lb />Just like last year when Bran-<lb />don Fractious graduated, Chris<lb />stepped up with his opportunity<lb />and made the most of it.?<lb />While replacing Johnson's<lb />productivity could be almost<lb />impossible to fully replace,<lb />Smith says the team is going<lb />about practice and the drills<lb /><lb />other day.<lb /><lb />Just the: same things,<lb />they're [the running backs] Just<lb />getting more reps now,T Smith -<lb />said. Since itTs spring ball, itTs<lb />a lot of competition, so the guy<lb />that goes out and is consistent, .<lb />works hard and knows his stuff *<lb />is who were going to put the °<lb />workload on.?<lb /><lb />One of the things that.<lb />Johnson did that doesnTt show ~<lb />up on the stat sheet is his abil- °<lb />ity to draw defenders into the<lb />box and open up some passing :<lb />lanes. Smith knows that. bal- .<lb />anced offense usually equals °<lb />success on the gridiron.<lb /><lb />You have to be a balanced<lb />offense, and you, have to be<lb />able to take the pressure off<lb />the quarterback,? Smith said.<lb />Then you have to be able to<lb />run when itTs time to run, so<lb />itTs a lot of pressure on the<lb />running backs unit right now<lb />because we have to go out and<lb />be consistent.?<lb /><lb />These guys are our future,<lb />Smith added.<lb /><lb />If all goes right for theT<lb />PiratesT running back unit, the<lb />loss of Johnson will be minimal,<lb />but that happening is easier said<lb />than done.<lb /><lb />However, Lindsay knows<lb /><lb />~that he and his teammates can<lb /><lb />achieve success and eventually<lb />step out of the shadow cast by<lb />Johnson.<lb /><lb />He was a great player,T<lb />Lindsay said. We have some<lb />guys that are ready to play ...<lb />so we can get it done.?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />the same way.as they would any<lb /><lb />Retail Stock Associate ©<lb /><lb />| Part-time :<lb /><lb />Stock Associate is responsible for maintaining ©<lb /><lb />store appearance, receiving, display and delivery<lb />of a variety of area rugs and rug accessories.<lb /><lb />Please apply at Capel Rugs at 611 SE Greenville<lb />-___ Blvd, Greenville NC 27858 or email:<lb />lala @?lerc] eyo) Ma(=) al ak @) ml AVAW mt 010) (0) (21)<lb /><lb />(STUDENT HOUSING \<lb /><lb />College Park - | &amp; 2BR, all appliances, water/sewer<lb /><lb />included.
