These<lb />students work with the Office<lb /><lb />of Student Rights and Responsi-<lb />bilities to hear cases that involve<lb />any violations with ECU's stu-<lb />dent code of conduct.<lb /><lb />At every students hear-<lb />ing, the advocate for accused<lb />students presents the students<lb />case and the attorney general<lb /><lb />presents the university's case.<lb />After hearing each case, a<lb />panel of five student board mem-<lb />bers decide whether or not the<lb />student is responsible for the viola-<lb />tion. If the student is found respon-<lb />sible, thé panel then impresses any<lb />necessary sanctions.<lb /><lb />However, if administration<lb /><lb />imposes the changes it has pro-<lb /><lb />posed, the board will no longer<lb />be entirely student-run.<lb />Currently, students make deci-<lb />sions on behalf of the university,?<lb />said Abey Dessie, attorney general.<lb />ECU is concerned that, since<lb />the university is not directly<lb />involved with the decision-<lb />making, case decisions can later<lb />lead to legal problems involving<lb />the university. Ultimately, the<lb />university can be held responsible<lb />for sanctions made by students.<lb />At this point, students have<lb />the power to implement conse-<lb />quences as severe as expulsion.<lb />ECU would also like to work<lb />with the students as a system of<lb /><lb />shared governance. With the way<lb />the system is currently set up, the<lb />university feels as though it does<lb />not have the say it deserves.<lb /><lb />This past summer the cur-<lb />rent policy was reviewed and<lb />eight recommendations for<lb />review were made. Committees<lb />were assigned to evaluate the<lb />task force as a whole and decide<lb />what changes can be made. .<lb /><lb />As a result of this, if the<lb />administration gets its wish,<lb />the board will move from being<lb />entirely student-run to having<lb />one faculty and one staff member<lb />sitting in on the meetings.<lb /><lb />The administration hopes<lb /><lb />that in implementing this change,<lb />the process will be sped up and<lb />students will hear the outcomes<lb />of their cases sooner.<lb /><lb />Student board members are<lb />concerned, however, that speed-<lb />ing up the process too much may<lb />potentially remove students due<lb />process rights. ,<lb /><lb />We feel that it is a good idea<lb />to speed up the process, how-<lb />ever, we dont want to remove<lb />the detailed process that works<lb />so hard to protect the students<lb />rights,? said Thomas Myers,<lb />advocate for accused students.<lb /><lb />see JUDICIAL page A4<lb /><lb />Domestic v<lb /><lb />1O<lb /><lb />lence lecture<lb /><lb />triggers an emotional response<lb /><lb />Photo by Lizz Wells<lb /><lb />Janine Latus gave a lecture in Hendrix Theatre yesterday about the deadly affects of domestic violence.<lb /><lb />Janine Latus shares<lb />her familys story<lb /><lb />DAVID WILDER<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />Former journalist, Janine<lb />Latus, gave an emotionally-<lb />charged speech Monday and<lb />shared personal insights found<lb />in her novel, If I am Missing or<lb />Dead: A Sisters. Story of Love,<lb />Murder and Liberation? with a<lb />crowd in Hendrix Theatre.<lb /><lb />Before the speech began,<lb />Cheryl Dudasik-Wiggs, director<lb />of the womens studies program,<lb />told listeners that the speech<lb />they we going to hear could be<lb />very valuable to them.<lb /><lb />The information that you<lb />will receive in the next hour could<lb />save a life,? Dudasik-Wiggs said.<lb /><lb />Last year, there was an esti-<lb />mated 77 domestic violence-related<lb />homicides in NC, according to the<lb />North Carolina Coalition Against<lb />Domestic Violence. _<lb /><lb />Latus spoke about the abu-<lb />sive relationships in which her<lb />sister was involved in, which<lb />ended tragically.<lb /><lb />Today, Ron Ball and I are<lb />romantically involved, but I fear<lb />I have placed myself at risk in<lb />a variety of ways. Based on his<lb />criminal past, writing this out just<lb />seems like the smart thing to do.<lb />If I am missing or dead, this obvi-<lb /><lb />ously has not protected me.?<lb /><lb />These words were found taped<lb />inside the desk drawer of Latuss<lb />younger sister, Amy, 10 weeks before<lb />she lost her life to domestic violence.<lb /><lb />Latuss speech also touched<lb />on her own experience with<lb />abusive relationships, saying<lb />her husband had been violent.<lb />She told stories of broken ribs,<lb />a broken nose, black eyes and<lb /><lb />rape.<lb /><lb />She said a parent physically<lb />abused her after she babysat his<lb />child, and Latuss father was not<lb />sympathetic.<lb /><lb />Never tell anyone, or they1]<lb />think you're a slut,? her father<lb />told her.<lb /><lb />She offered advice to the<lb />crowd, saying, Its far better to<lb />be without a man than to be with<lb />a bad man.? ;<lb /><lb />One in four American<lb />women will be battered,? Latus<lb />said. To demonstrate the statistic<lb />visually, she had one-fourth of<lb />the crowd stand up.<lb /><lb />And although most people<lb /><lb />have a stereotype in their minds<lb /><lb />about who gets battered, a<lb />lot of middle class American<lb />women get battered, according<lb />to Latus.<lb /><lb />The first signal of potential<lb />domestic violence is often con-<lb />trol, Latus said.<lb /><lb />Women in abusive relatton-<lb />ships often tell themselves, The<lb />reason Im putting up with this is<lb />because I cant be alone, but let<lb />me tell you, liberation is glori-<lb />ous,? Latus said.<lb /><lb />Latuss novel began as an<lb />article in O, The Oprah Magazine,<lb />and has been translated into five<lb />languages.<lb /><lb />Her speech was sad and<lb />scary, especially sinte Im a<lb />woman. <lb />PAGE A4<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN * NEWS<lb /><lb />TUESDAY, MARCH 4, 2008<lb /><lb />SGA continued from Al<lb /><lb />dining facility will close hasn't<lb />yet been decided but estimated<lb />dates are April 7 or 14, accord-<lb />ing to Johnson.<lb /><lb />The renovations will begin<lb />two weeks before classes end<lb />because a contractor wasnt found<lb />that could start on the project<lb />after and finish it in the suggested<lb />time span, according to Johnson.<lb /><lb />Renovations will start this<lb />spring is the good new and will<lb />be finished by August is the even<lb />better news, Johnson said.<lb /><lb />The changes will only<lb />reflect the serving area and not<lb />the dining area of the building.<lb />This is a $2.8 million project,<lb />according to Johnson.<lb /><lb />The structure in which stu-<lb />dents will be able to get their<lb />food will change and is met<lb />to reflect a more efficient way<lb />choosing their meals.<lb /><lb />The menu changes will be in<lb />collaboration with Fresh Food<lb />Company. Under this company,<lb />the food will be prepared in front<lb />of you and will mirror the setup<lb />of the West End Dining Hall.<lb /><lb />Its very customized food for<lb />the individual,? Johnson said.<lb /><lb />A question raised by a mem-<lb />bers was how dining plans to<lb />ensure speedy service instead of<lb />the congestion seen in some sta-<lb />tions of West End Dining Hall.<lb /><lb />Johnson reminded members<lb />that some areas are more popular<lb />than others but they would look into<lb />getting more servers and burners to<lb />eliminate this problem.<lb /><lb />Being that this renovation<lb />will take away one of the main<lb />sources of food for those with<lb />meals plans, specifically those<lb />staying on College Hill, revi-<lb />sions are being made to other<lb />dining halls hours and services to<lb />accommodate these individuals.<lb /><lb />Meal plan equlavancies will<lb />increase, other dining loca-<lb />tion hours will extend and the<lb />Galley will become all you can<lb />eat. : :<lb />The Subway on College Hill<lb />will close during this time. The<lb />fitness center in Jones will also<lb />close to make room for more<lb />seating for dining in that area.<lb /><lb />One of the problems the<lb />renovation will impose is the<lb />lack of seating that Todd Dining<lb />Hall offers.<lb /><lb />Staff photo<lb /><lb />The Pues of Greaneations and Student Save met collectively yesterday to host three guest speakers.<lb /><lb />We will add at least 300<lb />more seats in some shape or<lb />form,? Johnson said.<lb /><lb />Details about upcoming<lb />plans for dining were also men-<lb />tioned. In the upcoming two to<lb /><lb />three years, a Starbucks will be ©<lb /><lb />added to Wright Place, Croatan<lb />will be torn-down and rebuilt to<lb />a two-story facility in which a<lb />full-service Chick Filet and Chiilis<lb />will be housed and a Popeyes will<lb />also be added to campus.<lb /><lb />After the members heard<lb />about the proposed changes for<lb />their dining experience, Greg<lb />Doucette, student senate president<lb />at NC State, spoke to the group.<lb /><lb />Doucette commended the<lb />group for the recognition that<lb />they have been receiving from<lb />other schools concerning their<lb />structure and the legislation<lb />they have passed in recent<lb /><lb />years.<lb /><lb />While ECU SGA has been<lb />able to actively make an impact<lb />on campus, Doucette talked<lb />about the growing trend of<lb />students not being as involved<lb />in their SGA.<lb /><lb />Over the past 20-30 years,<lb />there has been less student<lb /><lb />~involvement, Doucette said.<lb /><lb />There is fundamental<lb />opposition to having students<lb />involved, Doucette said when<lb />addressing that more faculty are<lb />making decisions.<lb /><lb />The last speaker that<lb />was welcomed by SGA on<lb />Monday afternoon was Marian<lb />McLawhorn, of the N.C. <p>TUESDAY MARCH 4, 2008 PAGE A5<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />| go to N.C. State, but | sit in class and read Pirate<lb />Rants.<lb /><lb />{ Your procrastination destination}<lb /><lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />ogf<lb /><lb />1g<lb />1<lb /><lb />Can we still<lb />be triends?<lb /><lb />After the relationship is over<lb /><lb />MARGOT ROGERSON<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Anyone who has been in a relationship that<lb />ended somewhat amicably has dealt with this<lb />situation. Can we still be friends??<lb /><lb />It's a short question that can have a large signifi-<lb />cance. I've had to deal with this issue in a number<lb />of circumstances, whether it was my or a friend's<lb />relationship ending, or a new boyfriend dealing with<lb />the issues of his ex. It's not easy.<lb /><lb />There was a reason you two were together: because<lb />you liked what you saw in the other person and they<lb />reciprocated those feelings. Relationships end for vari-<lb />ous reasons - some of them good and some bad - but<lb />when it is over, how possible is it to remain friends?<lb /><lb />In my experience, I've been able to remain friends<lb />with very few of my exes. It's hard to separate the friend?<lb />feelings from the relationship ones. It may work out as<lb />long as you both are single, but as soon as one moves on<lb />and begins dating someone else, the "friendship" becomes<lb />rocky. Jealousy plays a big part in those feelings.<lb /><lb />It's not anyone's fault to be jealous in this situation.<lb />It's natural. You tell yourself that you want to remain<lb />friends with him because, after all, "he was my best<lb />friend." This is not a fault either. You should be in rela-<lb />tionships with people you consider to be great friends,<lb />but that doesn't mean that you can't find the comfort<lb />that he or she gave you in someone else.<lb /><lb />Staying friends with exes can prevent you from<lb /><lb />moving on, especially if the other party ended the<lb /><lb />relationship. You will always be holding on to the<lb />question of "What if?" Let that go. The probability<lb />of you getting back with your ex and making it work<lb />a second time is unlikely. |<lb /><lb />There's nothing worse than the feeling of failure.<lb />When a relationship ends, especially when it is not<lb />your decision, you may feel like you have failed. Maybe<lb />you have. Maybe you have wasted some time, but it is<lb />important to remember that there are new and great<lb />opportunities awaiting you now. Now the opportunity<lb />to get closer to some friends you may have pushed<lb />away for a while comes back. Take that cute guy up on<lb />his offer for dinner and see where it takes you.<lb /><lb />I think being friends with exes can work only<lb />on rare occasions. It's a nice idea because the person<lb />you were with meant a lot to you, and losing some-<lb />one that you shared a majority of your life with is not<lb />easy ... but how conducive is it to moving on?<lb /><lb />Of course, there will never be a catch all? response<lb />to this question. Different situations will call for dif-<lb />ferent actions. If you can make a friendship work with<lb />your ex, more power to you. If you can't, realize that<lb />maybe thats the best decision after all, and realize your<lb />greater ability to move on and find greater opportuni-<lb />ties ... even if it is with someone else.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Get off the road<lb /><lb />Why | think that some people just<lb />shouldn't drive<lb /><lb />ELISE PHILLIPS<lb />FEATURES EDITOR<lb /><lb />I have road rage. Yeah, its not my most endear-<lb />ing quality, but I have been known to yell at the slow<lb />driver in front of me or bang on the steering wheel in<lb />disgust while careening around G-Vegas.<lb /><lb />Those who know me know that I am gener-<lb />ally a nice person and try to treat everyone with<lb />respect, but theres something about Greenville<lb />traffic that brings out the worst in me.<lb /><lb />I'm not saying that Im the best driver in the<lb />world (because Im really not), or that everyone who<lb />drives a car in Greenville is somehow unfit to be<lb />behind the wheel. But I do believe that people over the<lb />age of 80 should not be allowed to have a license.<lb /><lb />It seems that these elderly citizens are usually the<lb />cause of my angry outbursts when trying to travel<lb />from point A to point B in this town, and nothing<lb />makes me more crazy than to drive 35 miles an hour<lb />in a 45-mile zone because Im stuck behind a Buick<lb />crawling painfully slowly down the street.<lb /><lb />After some research, Ive realized that Im not<lb />alone on this subject.<lb /><lb />According to a 2007 article by USA Today, older<lb />drivers are becoming a liability on the road. Poor<lb />reflexes and memory are some of the causes of these<lb />accidents, according to the article. Likewise, the 2007<lb />report of the Traffic Safety Committee of Insurance<lb />Companies revealed that the elderly (65 and older)<lb />caused more accidents than young people that year.<lb /><lb />In my experience, all of the fuss in the news is<lb />about accidents involving young peoples driving<lb />inability and inexperience, but really older people<lb />are just as at fault as their younger counterparts.<lb /><lb />And this is my complaint: I have places to go and<lb />people to see and work to get done. It seems unfair<lb /><lb />_ that the retired person in front of me should be allowed<lb /><lb />to drive so slowly. I mean, shouldn't people get tickets<lb />for driving slow Just like someone who drives fast?<lb />Because, obviously, the risks are the same. And yet<lb /><lb />I've never seen a Greenville police officer ever pull -<lb /><lb />over that LeSabre Im always yelling at.<lb /><lb />I'm honestly not trying to disrespect any older<lb />person with this article, but I have to say my piece. If<lb />the 92-year-old driver with bifocals is allowed to get<lb />behind the wheel, then they should let 14-year-olds get<lb />their driver's license too. For one thing, they may be<lb />inexperienced, but they have sharper vision and quicker<lb />reflexes. In Greenville, at least, thats a must.<lb /><lb />So, maybe all this ranting and raving won't do any<lb />good right now. But in the meantime, I'll just hope that<lb /><lb />G-Vegas car owners drive the speed limit. Maybe Ill<lb /><lb />see a member of the Greenville Police Department pull<lb />over somebody's grandma or grandpa. Then again,<lb />that will be the day when 14-year-olds drive.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />HAVE 5 ES BUN<lb /><lb />TO<lb />Poe PRESIDENT.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />a eR<lb /><lb />ONDER: ARETE RUA ULL ung LI) NY ~<lb /><lb />ETAT Cee ae<lb /><lb />WHERES THE<lb />ACADEMY AWARDS<lb />ORCHEST 7 Nee<lb /><lb />YOu sce<lb /><lb />oo a A<lb /><lb />tacit<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. Instead of<lb />students and locals driving to<lb />the other side of town, where<lb />there are only family-oriented<lb />restaurants within walking<lb />distance of the theaters, they<lb />could just walk downtown and<lb />save money on gas to put toward<lb />their evening.<lb /><lb />Movie nights would go from<lb />the drive-through and sneak-<lb />ing food into another formulaic<lb />romantic comedy, to seeing the<lb />latest film by the Coen broth-<lb />ers, Wes Anderson or Miike<lb />Takashi, followed by a meal at<lb />any of downtown's restaurants<lb />and then drinks at any of the<lb />local bars. Why would you need<lb />to drive anywhere if everything<lb />you needed was within the<lb />downtown area?<lb /><lb />I think Greenvilles diverse<lb />population could benefit from an<lb />indie theater as well. One~of the<lb />purposes of many of the indie<lb />theaters Ive been to in different<lb />cities has been to play movies<lb /><lb />from countries throughout the<lb />~world. The Galaxy in Cary often<lb />shows different Indian films,<lb />with just as many show times<lb />as big American films like There<lb />Will be Blood and Juno. They<lb />also bring in various Japanese<lb /><lb />films, like Sympathy for Mr.<lb /><lb />Vengeance and The Happiness of<lb /><lb />the Katakuris, not to mention all<lb />the other different international<lb />titles that make it. big after the<lb />. Sundance Film Festival.<lb />_ Theres even a perfect loca-<lb />tion downtown for an indie<lb />theater. That old, run-down<lb />theater that last saw an audi-<lb />ence when Jurassic Park was big<lb />would be a great location for<lb />an independent theater. With a<lb />little T.L.C., the place could go<lb />from a depressing storefront<lb />to a great theater. It just needs<lb />someone interested.<lb />Unfortunately, Im your<lb />typical Champagne dreams<lb />on a PBR budget? college stu-<lb />dent, so my ideas can't really<lb />take off on their own. Yet, Im<lb />sure somewhere in Greenville,<lb />theres a movie-loving entre-<lb />preneur who could help both<lb />ECU and the downtown area by<lb />making the old theater into an<lb />independent theater. If they are<lb />out there, they can count on me<lb />to help turn that place around.<lb />And Im sure there are plenty of<lb />other students and volunteers<lb />who'd help too, especially if<lb />it meant bringing a little bit<lb />of international cinema (and a<lb />theater you could have a beer<lb />in) to our city.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />eit<lb /><lb />News Editor<lb /><lb />Arianne Swanek<lb /><lb />Stephanie Smith<lb /><lb />All this talk<lb /><lb />about cancer...<lb /><lb />Are our eating habits causing it?<lb /><lb />LISA ENSMINGER<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Cancer is the number three cause of death in<lb />America today and it seems that there is a lot of<lb />talk about skin cancer from too much tanning or<lb />lung cancer from too many cigarettes. But has<lb />anyone thought about how the food you put into<lb />your body could possibly cause cancer? Most foods<lb />alone are cancer-causing agents that people do<lb />not even know, could cause problems ELE their<lb />bodies:<lb /><lb />Did you know that processed food is the<lb />number one cause of colon cancer? I'll bet you<lb />haven't seen that bit of information advertised<lb /><lb />~ much. Colon cancer is on the rise, and I have two<lb /><lb />grandparents who have suffered from this disease.<lb />It is important to get the public informed about<lb />what is causing this increase.<lb /><lb />So, what exactly is processed food? Simply-<lb />put, practically everything in the aisles at the<lb />grocery store. To avoid these foods, you should<lb />buy as many fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy and<lb />meat as possible.<lb /><lb />If processed foods are such a problem, why are<lb />these products everywhere? One reason is obvious:<lb />money. Many companies really couldn't care less<lb />about the well-being of the human population, and<lb />they will continue to produce whatever they can<lb />in the cheapest, fastest way.<lb /><lb />Another problem is that few are educated about<lb />the ingredients placed in these products. Many<lb />people dont consider reading the label before toss-<lb />ing it in the cart. Consumers put so much trust in<lb />those appealing All Natural? or A Healthy Fat-<lb />Free Snack? labels, that they ignore whats really<lb />healthy for them in the long run.<lb /><lb />I recently looked at a box of frozen fish with<lb />a tasty? lemon butter sauce. The ingredients list<lb />was seven lines long! One would think that this<lb />entrée consisted of a piece of salmon with some<lb />lemon juice mixed with butter, but this frozen<lb />dinner was far from that. The ingredients were<lb />listed out the door and included substances |<lb />couldn't even pronounce. If you have no idea what<lb />they are or where they came from, why would<lb />you put them into your body? This is just one<lb />example of the many products out there consumed<lb />by people who are promoting healthy eating and<lb />easy fixings.<lb /><lb />Think about it. How did the human population<lb />tickle their taste buds for generations before us?<lb />With natural stuff, of course. They didnt have the<lb /><lb />_ luxury of varieties of cereals or flavored potato<lb /><lb />chips, so how could these foods with unknown<lb />substances be healthy for our bodies?<lb /><lb />The next time you go grocery shopping, check<lb />out the ingredients in the items you usually buy.<lb />You will soon discover there is much more than<lb />the needed ingredients in these products, which<lb />have no nutritional value whatsoever. These harm-<lb />ful substances will take a toll on your body, and<lb />its all because society has been uninformed and<lb />misled into believing such scams!<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />J.D. It is important for stu-<lb />dents to maintain an,awareness<lb />of other cultures and values so<lb />as not to have their conclusions<lb />distorted by ethnocentricity.<lb /><lb />Jalil Roshandel, assistant<lb />professor in the political science<lb />department and the director of<lb />the securities studies program<lb />at ECU, has taught at numerous<lb />top-level institutions around the<lb />world. <lb />PAGE 7 | | | THE EAST CAROLINIAN * FEATURES | TUESDAY MARCH 4, 2008<lb /><lb />The Porcupine Tree releases the new anc ]<lb /><lb />Band releases and showcases complexities in<lb />four songs<lb /><lb />BRIAN MAZUROWSKI<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The Porcupine Tree is a progressive rock band with a knack for<lb />creating atmospheric diatribes with similarities ranging from the<lb />Rolling Stones to the progressive rock titans Tool. The Porcupine<lb />Tree recently released a singles EP that was previously only avail-<lb />able exclusively at their live concerts and online store. Though Nil<lb />Recurring isnt a new full-length album from The Porcupine Tree,<lb />calling the album leftovers wouldn't give it the proper justice it so<lb />deserves. It is rather a hidden gem of unreleased material.<lb /><lb />The Porcupine Tree is a band that mixes metal, psychedelia<lb />and old fashion rock ~n roll in order to create chilling, sentimental<lb />hymns.<lb /><lb />The Porcupine Tree offers songs that are easy to listen to, but<lb />extremely complex in nature. A systematic changing of any conceiv-<lb />able time signature in The Porcupine Tree, makes the band exciting,<lb />yet somewhat soothing for listeners. The Porcupine Trees songs<lb />are often lengthy like many other progressive bands, but rather<lb />than being routinely incomprehensible and chaotic like many other<lb />artists in their genre, The Porcupine Tree manages to channel their »<lb />creativity into a fluent and relaxing listening experience.<lb /><lb />The songs that are featured in their new release, Nil Recurring,<lb />are melting pots of all the most formidable features of rock music.<lb /><lb />_ From start to finish, Nil Recurring maintains a level of intrigue<lb />that doesnt eclipse the great sound of the music. Rather then being a<lb />doldrum of art rock expletives, it is a cleverly put together showcase<lb />of easy-to-listen-to progressive rock.<lb /><lb />Although The Porcupine Tree as a band has been together since<lb />1987, they constantly progress and grow as a group of musicians.<lb />The older these individuals get, the more explorative and compelling<lb />their music becomes, and Nil Recurring is no different.<lb /><lb />In only four songs, The Porcupine Tree manages to do what many<lb />bands cannot do in a lifetime of music: making hits that are not only<lb />amazing and well written, but also edgy and new. The Porcupine<lb />Tree sticks to their dark, brooding progressive rock roots on this EP,<lb />while keeping the listener ever so contently entertained.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted a<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Scanned image<lb /><lb />Popcorn equals _<lb />_ lower ticket prices<lb /><lb />Study Shows that the aters in 30 cities in a five-year choices.
