<lb />Inlon "<lb /><lb />Op |<lb /><lb />Why are cities<lb />so different?<lb /><lb />Craziness from one city to the next<lb /><lb />LISA ENSMINGER<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Which do you prefer? To live in a big city with<lb />many attractions and people, or in a small town<lb />with the basics and an average amount of people?<lb />This past weekend I traveled to Washington,<lb />DC for a concert and it was quite an interesting<lb />experience. Now, I am from an average size city,<lb />but DC is a pretty large place. The culture from<lb />Greenville to the big city life is extremely dif-<lb />ferent. Its amazing to see the different types of<lb />people and lifestyles just a couple hours away.<lb /><lb />Theres so much going on in Washington, its<lb />hard to soak everything in! Most people associate<lb />DC with politics and boring museums, but there is<lb />much more than that to explore. There is so much<lb />young life and attractions to see that I dont think<lb />you could ever get bored.<lb /><lb />The variety of people living in suchga city is<lb />amazing because it is a bunch of different cultures<lb />combined. From living in the small college town<lb />of Greenville, to visiting a large city was quite the<lb />change of pace for me. I had to observe everything<lb />that went on around me to really figure out what<lb />differences come with just a change of location. -<lb /><lb />One difference I noticed was the abundant<lb /><lb />eyeful of different people. Could you ever just -<lb /><lb />sit in one location and people-watch for hours<lb />on end? Well, after the concert, my sister and I<lb />waited for our Metro to come. Now, this is the<lb />place to do some serious people watching. There<lb />were intoxicated people left and right falling on<lb />the ground, and serious displays of public affec-<lb />tion among couples. I saw people with briefcases<lb />coming home from work late at night and bums<lb />asking for money. You name it, I saw it. The wide<lb />range of people was quite the conversation starter<lb />as we wondered where everybody came from.<lb /><lb />The differences between the North and South<lb />are drastic. I must admit that I feel right at home<lb />when I travel up North; with their style and cul-<lb />ture, but something about the south is comforting<lb />at the same time. The Northerners have a bad<lb />connotation associated with them most of the<lb />time, mostly rude, pushy, and minding their own<lb />business; and Southerners have the hospitality<lb />and friendliness connotation with a slow-paced<lb />lifestyle. These characteristics are noticeable by<lb />just experiencing both cultures.<lb /><lb />The pace of drivers is an excellent example<lb />on the difference between the cultures. In North<lb />Carolina, I am the fast-paced driver passing<lb />people at all times because they usually go five<lb />or 10 under the speed limit. However, on my way<lb />_ up to Washington, DC it was a completely differ-<lb /><lb />ent story. I was the one being passed (probably -<lb /><lb />because I was the annoying foreigner to the area),<lb />but I was going well over the speed limit (at least<lb /><lb />by 10), and people were passing me on the left and _<lb /><lb />right! It was absurd. I guess the speedy drivers<lb />reflect the fast-paced lifestyle of the big city!<lb /><lb />So, after observing and experiencing life in<lb />the fast lane, I come to ask myself, which do I<lb />prefer? This is quite the tough question for me to<lb />answer at this point, but the small college town<lb />is working for me at this point of my life. I love<lb />visiting big cities with varieties of restaurants and<lb />places to see, but the familiarity of a small area is<lb />comforting at the same time.<lb /><lb />Different regions of the United States have so<lb />many things to offer that its hard to pick Just one<lb />thing I want to settle for. Right now I am going to take<lb />advantage of my ability to travel where I can, and see<lb />what the nation and the world have to offer.<lb /><lb />If you have a friend or family member stationed<lb />somewhere else rather than your hometown, why<lb />not plan a trip to see what they have to offer. You<lb />may be pleasantly surprised and find yourself fall-<lb />ing in love with a place you never imagined!<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />ee<lb /><lb />Pa<lb /><lb /># SO T AGONIZeD oveR my te<lb />Decl SiON To WeAR THIS press |<lb /><lb />_My friend seems to think Obama<lb /><lb />TST<lb /><lb />TE REINS<lb />ee ae<lb /><lb />OTE YOUNGER<lb />GENERATION.<lb /><lb />12)<lb /><lb />ma ga ag Sone = = See = ge a<lb />Sy | na Wastiusgh, Exantiaac gS SE er Sy<lb />Lent eas NS_Conr<lb /><lb />{Your procrastination destination}<lb /><lb />TUESDAY FEBRUARY 26, 2008<lb /><lb />PAGE A4<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />Stop using AIM and go to bed you big freak!<lb /><lb />PRT aE RRR<lb /><lb />- x * : Ro :<lb />Win.<lb />ANS RED! LEWIS<lb />OPINION EDITOR<lb /><lb />Sunday night was the 80" annual Academy<lb /><lb />. Awards, but I had no desire to stay at home and<lb /><lb />watch the Oscars. The Oscars was an annual<lb />tradition for me, for about 10 years starting<lb />in 1992. Then George W. Bush was elected<lb /><lb />_ president, we went to war in Iraq, and the<lb /><lb />Oscars became nothing more than a showcase<lb />for liberal Hollywood pinheads to preach at we<lb />clueless simpletons.<lb /><lb />I have no idea how the political Sunday<lb />nights ceremony was or was not, nor do I care.<lb />For too long we have been subjected to the<lb />enlightened opinions of so-called celebrities<lb />who think because they make lousy movies, and<lb />are paid millions of dollars for doing it, that<lb />they are more in tune to the issues of the day<lb />than the rest of us. Being an actor, after all,<lb />gives them some insight that a plumber or a<lb />maid wouldn't necessarily have ... doesnt it?<lb /><lb />I haven't watched an entire Oscars telecast<lb />in about six years now because I just don't<lb />care about Hollywoods opinions. Does anyone<lb />really?<lb /><lb />But wait, you may be asking, aren't you an<lb />opinion columnist? What makes your opinion<lb />any more valuable than anybody elses?<lb /><lb />The answer to that is the same as to what<lb />makes Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandons<lb />opinions more valuable than anybody elses:<lb />absolutely nothing. I am no better than any-<lb />body else, and dont claim to be. My opinion<lb />on Iraq matters no more in the grand scheme<lb />of things than, say, Sean Penn's. Just because<lb />he could afford to Jet off to Iraq and play foot-<lb /><lb />~ sie with Saddam Hussein doesnt mean he has<lb /><lb />any more knowledge of foreign affairs than a<lb />busboy wiping off tables at Outback. ,<lb />My views on presidential politics, which you<lb />know I am more than happy to share, should<lb />carry no more weight than those of George<lb />Clooney or Oprah Narcissus? Winfrey. I am<lb /><lb />no more worried about global warming than<lb /><lb />my grandfather was over global cooling, and<lb />Al Gores Nobel Peace Prize is worth no more ©<lb />than my karate trophy ... and nobody nominated<lb />me for anything, I earned mine.<lb /><lb />I am so glad that Sicko, another of Michael<lb />Moores fictitious documentaries " this<lb />one about the American healthcare system<lb />" failed to win the best documentary feature<lb />prize. Too bad it was even nominated. One<lb />can only imagine how many holier-than-thou,<lb />anti-Bush diatribes would have peppered the<lb />self-absorbed windbags acceptance speech. |<lb />Moore may have a point, however. After suf-<lb />fering from diarrhea of the mouth for so many<lb />years, a better healthcare system might just be<lb />the thing for him.<lb /><lb />When I offer an opinion on something, I do<lb />so as one of you. I try to talk to you, not down |<lb />to you. I dont try to be something Im not, and<lb />I dont expect to bring everyone over to my way<lb />of thinking. Its nice if I do, but 'm not going<lb />to lose any sleep over it if I don't.<lb /><lb />One of my readers recently told me she<lb />loved me even though she didn't agree with<lb />my politics. Thats cool. She can make up her<lb />own mind, and we can agree to disagree and<lb />still be great friends. Barbra Streisand would<lb />have looked down her large nose at me and said<lb />something unprintable.<lb /><lb />And so, I am done with Hollywood. Oh, I'll<lb />still go to the movies and watch television, but<lb />as far a spending three hours on a Sunday night<lb />celebrating the accomplishments of a bunch of<lb />proselytizing radicals, 'm through.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />of innocent people, and then 3) kill and | have never had a problem Sa h C<lb />Be cAUSe MY SisTe | cant wait until you come crawling themselves, really just need to skip staying sober. And to be<lb />right there with Purdue and<lb />Penn State says a lot about our<lb />team, but it also says we have a<lb />long way to go.?<lb /><lb />Coming off five straight<lb />wins, ECU entered weekend<lb />play with the hope to continue<lb />its good fortunes at home, but<lb />due to a depleted rotation with<lb />Toni Paisley sidelined, and fac-<lb />toring in the big bats of their<lb />big conference opponents, ECU<lb />did all they could to salvage<lb />two wins.<lb /><lb />ECU started off the week-<lb />end Saturday in a pitchers duel<lb />with Syracuse, jumping out of<lb />the gates early with a 3-1 lead.<lb />But Syracuse fought back to tie<lb /><lb />the game at three apiece with<lb /><lb />a two-run single in the fifth,<lb /><lb />forcing coach Kee to pull a tired<lb />Britt Howell. Brooke Swann<lb />came in and shut down the<lb />Syracuse offense, not allowing a<lb /><lb />hit in 2 1/3. The game reached<lb /><lb />extra innings, and with the<lb />score tied in the bottom of the<lb />eighth inning, Jessica Johnson<lb /><lb />stepped up to the plate with a<lb /><lb />runner on third and one out.<lb />Opting for the intentional walk,<lb />Syracuse pitcher Angie Sagnelli<lb />threw an errant pitch, driving in<lb />the winning run for the Pirates,<lb /><lb />and securing the unorthodox<lb /><lb />win at 4-3.<lb /><lb />The Pirates entered their<lb />second matchup of the double-<lb />header against a 6-2 Purdue<lb />team with Swann continuing<lb />her work on the mound. ECU<lb />once again mounted an early<lb />lead at 1-0 after a bases loaded<lb />walk in the first; but the Boiler-<lb />makers rallied back, scoring two<lb />in the fourth and taking the lead<lb />into the bottom of the seventh<lb />inning. ECU began the inning<lb />with a leadoff hit from Jillian<lb /><lb />Gallagher. After a sacrifice bunt<lb /><lb />and passed ball put her at third<lb /><lb />base, ECUs Charina Sumner.<lb /><lb />drove in the tying run with a<lb />chopper to third. ECU would<lb />load the bases, but the heart<lb />of ECUs lineup failed to drive<lb />the runners in forcing another<lb />extra-innings affair. In sudden<lb />death fashion, Purdue advanced<lb />the runner to third and a single<lb />through the left side brought<lb />home the winning run as ECU<lb />suffered a loss for the first time<lb />in seven games. Brooke Swann<lb />gave up two earned runs and<lb />seven hits in the pitchers duel.<lb /><lb />ECU entered Sundays play<lb />with Swann once again on the<lb /><lb />mound, but her start would not<lb />last four innings as she allowed<lb /><lb />two earned runs and kept the<lb />Pirates in: the game. Howell<lb />entered the game fresh from<lb />Saturdays play, but with the<lb />game tied at three in the top<lb />of the seventh, Howell became<lb />unraveled, giving up six runs<lb /><lb />behind six hits and one error<lb /><lb />to put the game out of reach<lb /><lb />at 9-3.<lb />Even with the tough outing,<lb />coach Kee only had positive<lb /><lb />things to say about Howell.<lb /><lb />As a freshman, shes had<lb />a lot of pressure thrown on<lb />her and besides the last inning<lb />against Penn State, shes actu-<lb />ally done a great job holding<lb />big opponents,? Kee said. They<lb />made adjustments on her and<lb />she has work to do, but shes<lb />always given us the chance to<lb />win each ball game. Penn State<lb />was just the wake-up call we<lb />needed.?<lb /><lb />Responding to coach Kees<lb />speech following the Penn State<lb />loss and looking at finishing<lb />the weekend under .500, the<lb />Pirates responded and capped<lb />off Sundays doubleheader with<lb />a commanding 8-2 win over in-<lb />state rival, Appalachian State.<lb /><lb />Brooke Swann pitched seven<lb />innings, striking out five and<lb />allowing two runs on five hits.<lb />Stacey Andrews was the force<lb />behind the plate as she went 2-4<lb />with an RBI triple and two-run<lb />homer that clinched the victory<lb />for the Pirates, pushing their<lb />record to 11-4. .<lb /><lb />The Pirates heart of the<lb />lineup failed them both days as<lb />the Pirates continued to strand<lb />runners, and Charina Sumner<lb />and Christina Merrida were<lb />the lone constants throughout<lb />weekend play for ECUs offense,<lb /><lb />combining for 12-28 behind the<lb /><lb />plate with six runs scored and<lb />four runs driven in.<lb /><lb />_ Swann extended her record<lb />to 6-2 and team leading ERA to<lb />1.56, earning ECUs two victo-<lb />ries for the weekend.<lb /><lb />ECU hosts the Pirate Clash<lb />this weekend as the Pirates<lb /><lb />will ~take on Radford Friday<lb />afternoon at 2 p.m. at the ECU<lb /><lb />Softball Field.
