You see, about 17 years ago, back in<lb />Morrisville, North Carolina, she remembers me<lb />running home excited because I'd just learned to<lb />count to 10 and wanted to show off for her. So, I<lb />started counting, One, two, three, foah...? At this<lb />point in the story, my mom likes to laugh and tell<lb />people about how scared she was that I would start<lb />talking like that for the rest of my life.<lb /><lb />We'd moved down to North Carolina from<lb /><lb />Pennsylvania when I was about five years old.<lb /><lb />I have very few memories of actually living in<lb />Pennsylvania, so I like to think of North Caro-<lb /><lb />lina as my home, and my, accent has reflected "<lb /><lb />that quite often. Yet, ITve never really felt like I<lb />truly belong. Sometimes, when I force myself to<lb />speak like my parents do, people ask me in an<lb />angry tone where ITm from (seems that attitudes<lb />are still a little sour from carpet bagging ...), but<lb />when I accidentally slip into a southern twang |<lb />get laughed at by young locals who've learned to<lb />hide their accents.<lb /><lb />It seems thereTs really no way to win for the<lb />young people being raised in the south. We're<lb />constantly bombarded with images of the stupid,<lb />ignorant southerners in movies, television and<lb />radio; can anyone really say that Larry the Cable<lb />Guy helped improve the southTs image at all? Yet,<lb />were told to hold onto our pride and have dignity<lb />for our home. ItTs gotten to the point where almost<lb />every person I know who was born and raised in<lb />North Carolina can slip in and out of their south-<lb />ern accent, depending on the situation. In line at<lb />Parker's? Time to pull out the accent. Talking<lb />in class? Better hide it. ITve even met people who<lb />lie about where they're from along with hiding<lb />their accent, despite the fact we go to school in<lb />North Carolina. .<lb /><lb />Can anybody really blame them? The south-<lb />ern accent has become the catch-all stereotype for<lb />ignorance and stupidity, and we're helping it along<lb />by forcing ourselves to hide any accent and con-<lb />suming the.entertainment that exploits southern-<lb />ers. As I mentioned earlier, Larry the Cable Guy<lb />helped reinforce a lot of negative attitudes about<lb />the south " the fact that weTre stupid, fat, white<lb />trash hillbillies who have less class in our whole<lb />body than the rest of America has in their pinky<lb />fingers. Can anyone even think of a positive por-<lb />trayal of a person with a southern accent in popular<lb />entertainment anymore? Outside of Mark Twain,<lb />idiot-savants like Forrest Gump, and a few charac-<lb />ters from Fried Green Tomatoes, the south just canTt<lb />seem to find a positive role model in movies or TV.<lb /><lb />A lot of those born-and-raised North Carolinians<lb /><lb />I mentioned, tell me they donTt like to speak with<lb />an accent because it makes them sound stupid.?<lb />Stupid to whom? Were in North Carolina, for<lb />GodTs sake. If I went to North Dakota I wouldn't<lb />be shocked by people talking like they did in Fargo,<lb />and if I was in New York City, I wouldn't laugh at<lb />a person with a Brooklyn accent; so why do we feel<lb />like we need to hide ours in our own state?<lb /><lb />We need to stop being ashamed of a colloquial<lb />accent and start embracing it. My doctor once told<lb />me he was teased in medical school because he<lb />talked so slowly, yet he gr aduated top of his class<lb />and surpassed everyone's expectations of him.<lb />If heTd dropped his accent around his peers, he<lb />would've just reinforced their stereotype of where<lb />he came from, so why donTt we do the same?<lb /><lb />If someone makes fun of you for your accent,<lb />prove him or her wrong. ItTs time we stopped<lb />buying into stereotypes, letting them control who<lb />we are, and start being ourselves.<lb /><lb />And for the love of God, donTt give any more<lb />money to Larry the Cable Guy.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />pe n<lb />~ fe<lb />f<lb /><lb /># aH), e<lb />ig y<lb />? é t *<lb />ig Ks<lb />: fl ¥<lb />i 3 :<lb />; ;<lb />x ¢ ¥ iy<lb />° Z,<lb />\ ( 4<lb />T :<lb />oe.<lb />~be<lb />Mp .<lb />YW j ie OO, a<lb />My Z af v7 36<lb />(ne Zs : ~ fo ; ramon | apegeeee :<lb />or Iv; if if<lb /> i<lb />F<lb />/<lb />ef<lb />bh; kets Pa t3'F Tx, ~bune ba Setiic es<lb /><lb />Sadly, my computer is down right now.<lb />Do you people mind if | indulge in a bit<lb />of verbal blogging??<lb /><lb />Bb<lb />IN AMERICA! Oftentimes I ask my friends<lb />what is going on in their lives and/or what recent<lb />issues they feel strongly about. I figure that if<lb />it affects them, it has a better chance of having<lb />significance to others. -<lb /><lb />Last week I was speaking to a friend at work,<lb />and she relayed the story of Maria Lauterback, a<lb />pregnant Marine, who was raped and killed by her<lb />senior officer. With my focus on other news, this<lb />was something I had overlooked. She concluded<lb />by saying, Sure makes you think before sending<lb />more daughters into the armed forces?<lb /><lb />I didn't give it much thought then, but the<lb />other night I was watching Law and Order, and<lb />the storyline, although fictitious, was about a<lb />female cop that had been overpowered, raped and<lb />beaten by an inmate.<lb /><lb />| have always been a proponent for female<lb />rights, especially in the workplace, but I couldnTt<lb />help but question our equality in this arena. Are<lb />our physical capabilities equal enough?<lb /><lb />Strong enough<lb /><lb />I suppose the women that enter these profes-<lb />sions know what is to come. I also suppose that<lb />in most instances they are able to perform their<lb />duties without any problems or impediments.<lb /><lb />But what about the rare cases? The Maria<lb />Lauterbacks? These cases in which the females<lb />are unable to protect themselves from their<lb />inequalities? Although the plot in the Law and<lb />Order episode was made-up, it seemed plausible<lb />and realistic.<lb /><lb />Then I thought of another question: should<lb />we protect them? When two males go into a<lb />fight, one of them is physically weaker because<lb />the other one wins. However, I next thought of<lb />the instance in which a male to male comparison<lb /><lb />is inadequate: women that are overpowered and.<lb /><lb />sexually. abused. There really is no comparison<lb />or horror that is equivalent.<lb /><lb />So, what should we do? I really cannot answer<lb />that question. The United States court systems<lb />have upheld decisions to maintain the womanTs<lb />right to enlist and become every bit as active in<lb />the military as men. I am not sure, however, if I<lb />agree with this. I suppose only time will tell.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />shooting?<lb /><lb />JESSICA DUNLOW<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Not even a year after the tragedy at Virginia<lb />Tech, another university shooting has captured<lb />headlines. Last Thursday (on the loathed<lb />ValentineTs Day, no less), Steven Kazmierczak<lb />opened fired in a classroom at Northern Illinois<lb />University, which eventually led to the shootmng<lb />of 21 people and the death of five.<lb /><lb />What is going on here? First VT, and now<lb />this. These two shootings are even connected!<lb /><lb />_ The same Web site that sold Cho the gun used |<lb /><lb />for his massacre at Tech, also sold Kazmierczak<lb />his! It is bizarre to have this happening and hit-<lb />ting close to home so seriously again, when all of ©<lb /><lb />_us are old enough to remember the aftermath of<lb /><lb />the Columbine shootings. ECU keeps updating<lb />our security and crime ile but will it ever<lb />be enough?<lb /><lb />The launching, finally, of the security text<lb />messaging system is a wonderful addition. But<lb />what about all of the students that are not allotted<lb />texting in their plans and do not receive them?<lb />How are we supposed to know if something hap-<lb />pens during our class day and where not to go?<lb /><lb />Granted, I think ECU does a pretty good job<lb />of keeping us as safe as possible, and I speak as a<lb />resident of Clement from the year of the fire, but<lb />they can only do so much.<lb /><lb />ItTs not like we should be afraid of every person<lb />who is on medication or has a diagnosed mental<lb />disorder (even though both Kazmierczak and<lb />Cho were on medication for their conditions, and<lb />both had stopped taking their medicine prior to<lb /><lb />_ the shootings) because that is unreasonable. I just<lb /><lb />would like for the time to come again when stu-<lb />dents can attend classes on a daily basis without<lb /><lb />the paranoia that someone might pop out from<lb /><lb />behind a projector screen or open the door and<lb />fire gunshots around the room.<lb /><lb />All we can really do is remember those stu-<lb />dents who were placed in the line of fire and made<lb />the nation realize that college campuses are a<lb />fragile balance that can easily be disrupted, and<lb />that we are easy targets. ITm mostly Just angry at<lb />the fact that these shooters seem to believe that it<lb />is the entirety of the student body that is at fault<lb />for the wrongs to them, or that maybe shooting<lb />innocent students will bring them some sort of<lb />final peace before they finish themselves off.<lb /><lb />It is a sad thing that they do end their own<lb />lives, but because Kazmierczak and Cho took the<lb />lives of so many talented individuals, the world<lb />will never know what they were capable of and<lb />what they had to offer humanity. There could<lb />~have been a future president, a great musician<lb />or a Teacher of the Year amongst them. The<lb />shooters should not have taken these lives away<lb />from the world.<lb /><lb />It is unreasonable for these things to keep<lb />happening, and there has to be something that we<lb />can all do about it. We just have to band together<lb />and try. Who's with me? Because I sure do not<lb />want anymore talent going to waste because of<lb />someone's personal disdain for life.<lb /><lb />_ This writer can be-reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Kimberly Bellamy J.D. All over campus,<lb />students can be seen gabbing<lb />into the device or frantically<lb />punching in text messages. But,<lb />like most technology, some of us<lb />want to get rid of the old and<lb />usher in the new.<lb /><lb />However, with cell phone<lb />contracts, that is not always<lb />possible.<lb />companies charge exorbitant<lb />prices just to disconnect your<lb />cell phone, and thereTs usually<lb />even more fees besides the early<lb /><lb />termination ones.<lb /><lb />Not to fear, if you want to<lb />get out of your wireless com-<lb />mitment without breaking the<lb />bank, cellswapper.com is here<lb />to help. Named one of the Top<lb />50 Web sites in 2007 by Time<lb />Magazine, Cellswapper gives<lb />consumers a way out.?<lb /><lb />The idea behind Cellswap-<lb />per was conceived in 2003<lb /><lb />when consumers all around.<lb /><lb />the country were complain-<lb />ing about sub-par cell phone<lb />service. According to the site,<lb /><lb />-The Council of Better Business<lb /><lb />Sometimes phone .<lb /><lb />Bureaus reported in 2004 that<lb /><lb />the most product complaints<lb /><lb />that year were about cell phone<lb />issues. Cellswap-<lb />per allows customers who are<lb />unhappy with their service<lb />to turn over their contract to<lb />another person.<lb /><lb />The process is simple: type<lb />in the logistics of your plan (like<lb />how many anytime minutes you<lb />have, mobile to mobile minutes,<lb />unlimited texting, etc.). Then<lb />enter your personal information<lb />(like your name and address),<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ FEATURES<lb /><lb />and finally, type in an incentive<lb />to get your plan picked up faster<lb />(like throwing in your phone<lb />and charger, or even cash!).<lb /><lb />To have a plan posted, users<lb />of Cellswapper must pay a one<lb />time posting fee. They have two<lb />payment options before posting:<lb />the $18.95 (power poster) option<lb />allows users to have basic expo-<lb /><lb />sure of their plan. The $24.95<lb /><lb />option (showcase poster) gives<lb />customers preferred placement<lb />on the Cellswapper homepage.<lb /><lb />Once someone picks up<lb />your cell phone plan, there is<lb />nothing more for you to do!<lb />Your name is officially taken<lb />off your old wireless account<lb />and replaced by the buyer. <p>THURSDAY FEBRUARY 21,2008 PAGE BL<lb /><lb />Memphis vaulting C-USA into national discussion<lb /><lb />Undefeated Tigers have many critics<lb /><lb />KELLEN HOLTZMAN<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The rise of Memphis to the top of the AP Top<lb />25 poll has thrusted the Conference USA into the<lb />national spotlight.<lb /><lb />However, the attention C-USA has received so<lb />far is not the kind of riotoriety Commissioner Britton<lb />Banowsky would like to see.<lb /><lb />Many of the so-called experts? proclaim that<lb />the Tigers aren't being tested in C-USA, and that<lb />the lack of competition will hurt their chances in the<lb />NCAA tournament. This line of reasoning has been<lb />presented for the past two seasons as Memphis has<lb />crashed out of the NCAA tournament earlier than<lb />expected after several successful regular season<lb />campaigns.<lb /><lb />Memphis coach John Calipari has a somewhat<lb />different perspective. Calipari believes his Tigers<lb />are getting every C-USA teamTs best shot night in<lb />and night out, which will ultimately help his team<lb />when tournament time comes.<lb /><lb />So, which argument is the correct one?<lb /><lb />Both sides have flawed logic.<lb /><lb />Playing in C-USA shouldn't be an automatic<lb />disqualification? for a good team. If Memphis fails<lb />to make the Final Four this season, critics will point<lb />to the TigersT weak? conference schedule. If UCLA<lb />or Kansas miss out on the finals, no criticism of the<lb />Pac-10 or Big 12 is likely to be made.<lb /><lb />Michigan State, for example, has not made the<lb />Final Four in the past two seasons. It is not because<lb />the Big 10 failed to prepare it; the Spartans were<lb />simply outplayed.<lb /><lb />If anything, C-USA is creating an illusion that<lb />Memphis is better than it really is. The Tigers<lb />coast through conference play and in return, soar<lb /><lb />see MEMPHIS page B5<lb /><lb /></p>
