Any<lb />web surfer who knew where to<lb />find the files could have accessed<lb />them at any time.<lb /><lb />It is believed that Googles<lb /><lb />_ spiders,? which crawl the Web<lb /><lb />24 hours a day and do nothing<lb />but copy what they find, found<lb />the information. Spiders were<lb />regularly crawling Butlers Web<lb />site and somehow came across<lb />some of the sensitive files.<lb /><lb />It is impossible to tell how<lb />Google's spiders found the infor-<lb />mation; however, many people<lb />do not realize that by installing<lb />search engine toolbars, they are<lb />turning their own computer into<lb />a spider, Titus said. ©<lb /><lb />For example, if a person<lb />installs a Google Search Toolbar<lb />into their browser, the toolbar<lb />will report to Google all of the<lb />Web sites they have visited. It<lb /><lb />is possible that someone alerted<lb />Google to the sensitive files<lb />simply by visiting the directory<lb />with the sensitive information.?<lb /><lb />The problem this situation<lb />creates is that these students<lb />can potentially fall victim to<lb />identity theft.<lb /><lb />Information such as social<lb />security numbers does not<lb />change. On Jan. 29, The<lb />Mars Volta released their long<lb />anticipated and delayed album,<lb />The Bedlam in Goltath. It is their<lb />fourth full-length studio album<lb />and, like other Mars Volta<lb />albums, it offers 12 tracks full<lb />of cerebral assaults of musical<lb />complexity.<lb /><lb />Like their previous albums,<lb />The Bedlam in Goltath offers lis-<lb />teners a risky and far from typi-<lb />cal experimental rock album.<lb />The band is the<lb />Prainenita «ot<lb />former members<lb />of another avant-<lb />garde rock band,<lb />At The Drive In,<lb />that has a similar<lb />occult following .<lb />and art funk aspi-<lb />rations.<lb /><lb />The Bedlam<lb />in Goliath is an<lb />example of musi-<lb />cal anarchism in<lb />its finest form,<lb />a war zone of '<lb />awkward vocals,<lb />indiscernible<lb />lyrics, puzzling<lb />gurtars and<lb />unidentified back-<lb />ground noises.<lb />Even though<lb />the creativity of<lb />The Mars Volta<lb />is insurmount-<lb />able, it sometimes<lb />makes their music<lb />hard for the aver-<lb />age listener to<lb />digest.<lb />The Bedlam<lb /><lb />in Goliath is no<lb />exception to this<lb />~rule; through-<lb />out the album g_<lb />you find yourself _ :<lb />entrenchedinthe qe<lb />insanity but in<lb />the. same instant<lb /><lb />nauseated from what feels like<lb />a progressive funk, metal sei-<lb />pRIbe.<lb />The band makes no qualms<lb />about being the black sheep?<lb />of progressive rock music, but<lb />relish the idea of being the musi-<lb />cal epitome of abstract. In turn,<lb />this makes The Mars Volta less<lb />accessible to the everyday music<lb />fan but also creates a following<lb />of fans with an unmatched sense<lb />of loyalty and appreciation for<lb />the band.<lb /><lb />Although some songs, such<lb />as Tourniquet man, seem<lb />easier to listen to than your<lb />average The Mars Volta song,<lb />this album is laced with tracks<lb />that a person could listen to<lb />endlessly and still not be able<lb />to understand. 7<lb /><lb />The Mars Voltas new effort |<lb /><lb />is the sort of genius composi-<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN<lb /><lb />tion that most of us cannot<lb />begin to understand. <p>ene el<lb /><lb />Opini<lb /><lb />Gone<lb />but not<lb />forgotten<lb /><lb />Remembering one of the greats<lb /><lb />ANDREA ROBERTSON<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Feb. 20, 2005, that foul day when Hunter S.<lb />Thompson took his life. Tomorrow is the three-<lb />year anniversary of his death, and I feel that his<lb />accomplished life must be celebrated.<lb /><lb />Thompson, an American journalist, is<lb />most notably recognized for his work, Fear<lb />and Loathing in Las Vegas. This is Just one of<lb />his works in which he enjoys pointing out the<lb />depravities of our culture that he discovered<lb />on his hunt for the American Dream.?<lb /><lb />This work was highly publicized, due<lb />to the 1998 release of the film adaptation<lb />starring Johnny Depp as Thompsons char-<lb />acter. In addition, Thompson is the father of<lb /><lb />Gonzo° journalism, which is writing based<lb />on experience " Thompson was often the<lb />primary role in his stories due to his amount<lb /><lb />of involvement at the scene..<lb /><lb />His .breakthrough work, Hells Angels,<lb />recounts the nearly two years he spent with<lb />the Hells Angels motorcycle club during the<lb />1960s. This group was said to have been the<lb />fiercest of all motorcycle gangs, and Thomp-<lb />son was able to practically become a member<lb />and experience its inner workings.<lb /><lb />The book exposes the truth about the<lb />lifestyle of this greasy, chain-wearing gang.<lb />Things went smoothly for Thompson until<lb />the gang felt that he would make a great<lb />profit from its publication, and they wanted<lb />to reap the benefits also. Eventually Thomp-<lb />son received a pounding? from the Angels<lb />and was k icked out.<lb /><lb />Thompsons career was also a cae see<lb /><lb />of his being somewhat of a political junkie.<lb />His volume, Fear and Loathing: On the Cam-<lb />paign Trail 72, is composed of many articles<lb />he wrote about the election for Rolling Stone.<lb />Thompson dedicated practically all of his time<lb />to traveling wherever the candidates went.<lb />After Richard Nixon won the election,<lb />Thompson soon became a vicious critic of<lb />Nixons career. Upon Nixons death, Thomp-<lb />son showed his continuing contempt for the<lb />former president by writing in an article for<lb />Rolling Stone, He could stab you in the back<lb />and shake your hand at the same. time.?<lb />Thompson also covered the 1992 elec-<lb />tions. These articles appear in ~his book,<lb />Better Than Sex, the last book in a series<lb />known as The Gonzo Papers. Once again,<lb />Thompson found himself severely disgusted<lb />with the winner of the election, Bill Clinton.<lb />Mockingly, Thompson stated, Bill Clinton<lb /><lb />does not inhale marijuana, right? You bet.<lb /><lb />Like I chew LSD, but I dont swallow it.?<lb /><lb />Thompson would often adopt another<lb />persona, one he named Raoul Duke. Duke was<lb />a crazy, drug-addled citizen who disregarded<lb />the law. While Thompson and Duke were<lb />both the same man, the two led completely<lb />different lives. Thompson once said in an<lb />interview with the BBC that he was unsure<lb />of whom to.be when asked to do interviews<lb />at universities. Did they want Thompson<lb />or Duke? By taking on this other persona,<lb />Thompson founded a great following in both<lb />literary and drug circles.<lb /><lb />It is rumored that another film, The Rum<lb />Diary, said to once again star Johnny Depp as<lb />the character meant to resemble Thompson,<lb />is to be released in 2008.<lb /><lb />This movie, also sharing the title of the<lb />book; is the only work of fiction that Thomp-<lb />son ever wrote. However, the experiences of<lb />the main character, Paul Kemp, are said to<lb />be loosely based on those of Thompson while<lb />in Puerto Rico.<lb /><lb />The loss of Thompson, a pioneer of<lb />American journalism, is a detrimental blow<lb />to the American culture. It is rare to find a<lb />person so willing to push the line as Thomp-<lb />son did. However,<lb /><lb />Thompson would not have wanted us<lb />to mourn his death; he would want us to<lb />celebrate his life. So, heres to you, Dr.<lb />Gonzo. May your memory continue to live<lb />on through the writings of new journalists<lb />everywhere.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />{Your procrastination destination}<lb /><lb />TUESDAY FEBRUARY 19, 2008<lb /><lb />PAGE AS<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />My lifelong goal is to have my own custom ping-pong<lb />paddle like Forrest Gump.<lb /><lb />MSCAIN<lb /><lb />Bineadias- Ooo!<lb />We<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Eu 'T THINK<lb />THEIR HEARTS ARE<lb />BEALL IN IN iii<lb /><lb />Those of you who think you know<lb />everything are annoying to those of<lb />us who do.<lb /><lb />Call 911! Or when<lb />you and someone you knew had<lb />some unsettled dispute, and you<lb />would still hang out in group<lb />settings, smiling and chatting<lb />to everyone else of course, but<lb />would pull the over-the-top<lb />effort to avoid verbal or eye<lb />contact with them? I know, I<lb />know, I miss elementary school<lb />as much as the next kid, but that<lb />is not the topic of today. Maybe<lb />next week. |<lb /><lb />This may begin to feel<lb /><lb />like a Features piece, but I<lb />am sure Elise will allow it.<lb />To start, leave the teenage<lb />shenanigans to individuals<lb />who carry learners permits<lb /><lb />and are too young to legally<lb /><lb />smoke. I understand that<lb />while most of us began to act<lb />like the legally recognized<lb />adults we are when hitting the<lb />age of 18, others may be late<lb />to rise to the occasion.<lb /><lb />A common blunder for<lb />some is when they do not<lb />know their audience. Recently<lb />it came to my attention that<lb />certain individuals may not<lb />understand parables, meta-<lb />phors or analogies. So what<lb />did I do? Well, duh, being a<lb />guy I transgressed the law<lb />and continued to use them,<lb />hoping that in throwing out<lb />my metaphors like Frisbees,<lb />one of them would be caught<lb />in these peoples hands instead<lb />of going over their heads. I<lb />was sadly mistaken.<lb /><lb />As mentioned previously,<lb />the silent treatment routine<lb />is not merely unoriginal,<lb />but it can become a positive<lb />enforcer if used for the wrong<lb /><lb />The East adel does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. This is especially true<lb />when members involved are<lb />misguided for their reasoning<lb />when going down the path<lb />they choose.<lb /><lb />The silent treatment, when<lb />taken to the extreme, shows<lb />nothing more than personal<lb />cowardice and is normally<lb />used spur of the moment with<lb />a complete disregard for the<lb />moves effects on others. There are so<lb /><lb />many things that I felt like<lb />Keith LeClair brought to this<lb />program.?<lb /><lb />Godwin said that this years<lb /><lb />process of choosing which |<lb /><lb />player would wear the No. 23<lb />jersey was the toughest, because<lb />there were so many worthy<lb />candidates.<lb /><lb />My first year here, we<lb />had about three or four quality<lb />candidates and last year we had<lb />about six or seven,? Godwin<lb /><lb />said. But, I told our team this ©<lb /><lb />morning that this year I had<lb />about 12-15 young men that<lb />were mentioned in the same<lb />breath of this honor.?<lb /><lb />To me, that means that<lb />were getting the right type<lb />of guys to buy into what were<lb />doing, that are committed and<lb />have the dedication to what<lb />we're trying to do, in the same<lb />vision that coach LeClair did,?<lb />he said.<lb /><lb />LeClair battled the disease<lb />for five years, and ECU's base-<lb /><lb />-ball stadium is named in his<lb /><lb />honor.<lb /><lb />Schieber will honor LeClair<lb />in a different way this season,<lb />which will be obvious by the<lb />jersey number that he will<lb />be wearing at Clark-LeClair<lb />Stadium.<lb /><lb />It will be business as usual<lb />but in the back of my mind, I<lb />will always think about why<lb />we're here and why the Pirates<lb />are where they are, Schieber<lb />said. First basemen<lb />Jessica Johnson provided the<lb />bulk of the offense with three<lb />RBIs, going 2-for-3 from the<lb />plate. Swann delivered the first<lb />of her three impressive outings,<lb />striking out eight batters, and<lb />allowing one run on two hits in<lb />ECU's 7-1 victory.<lb /><lb />After sweeping the double-<lb />header Friday, ECU faced off<lb />against a 2-1 Ohio squad Satur-<lb />day afternoon. The offense once<lb />again stumbled out of the gate<lb />but for the second time,. Howell<lb />got the best of her counterpart<lb />on the mound, delivering six<lb />scoreless innings behind stellar<lb />defense before ECUs offense<lb />came to life. Faced with a bases<lb />loaded jam in the fifth inning<lb />of a tied ballgame, Christina<lb />Merrida delivered the game-<lb />changing play of the afternoon.<lb />Ohios designated hitter, Meli<lb />Bonner, hit what looked to be a<lb />grand slam to center but Mer-<lb />rida made an over the shoulder<lb />catch, stumbling into the base<lb />of the wall head first, preserv-<lb />ing the tie, and setting the tone<lb />for the rest of the game.<lb /><lb />ECUs offense responded<lb />with a bases-clearing double in<lb />the sixth from catcher Vanessa<lb />Moreno , Capping off a six-run<lb />sixth inning that secured the<lb />game for ECU, 6-2.<lb /><lb />In.a rematch of Fridays<lb />late afternoon game, ECU<lb />defeated Maine, 3-2, behind<lb />another solid performance<lb />from Swann and ECUs defense.<lb />Down 2-1 early in the contest,<lb />Swann buckled down and held<lb />Maine scoreless in the final<lb />four innings. ECU responded<lb /><lb />by delivering key hits down the<lb /><lb />stretch, getting another clutch<lb />knock from Moreno in the sixth<lb />to give ECU the one run win<lb />going into Sunday's champion-<lb />ship game.<lb /><lb />Coming off a shutout vic-<lb />tory against Ohio and two<lb />straight wins, Boston College<lb />entered the game with momen-<lb /><lb />tum, but was no match for<lb /><lb />_ECUs inspired club, in Sunday<lb /><lb />afternoon's championship game.<lb />ECU second basemen Erin St.<lb />Ledger drove in three RBIs and<lb />Swann completed the weekend<lb />with her best outing, striking<lb />out three batters and allowing<lb />three hits ina 6-0 win. ECU<lb />capped off the tournament with<lb />the way it began, a complete<lb />game shutout from one of its<lb />star pitchers.<lb /><lb />ECU went into the weekend<lb />with a 4-2 mark that included<lb />two losses to ACC rival, UNC.<lb />But the losses to UNC only<lb />set the table for this weekends<lb />strong showing at home, as the<lb />Lady Pirates outscored their<lb />opponents, 23-5, walking away<lb />tournament champions.<lb /><lb />Charina Sumner went 6-16<lb />during the tournament, driv-<lb />ing in six runs, while ECUs<lb />cleanup hitter, St. Ledger, went<lb />8-15 with four RBIs. Brooke<lb />Swann improved her record<lb />to 4-1, and team leading ERA<lb />to 1.27, while Howells 1.45<lb />ERA stretched her record to a<lb />perfect 3-0.<lb /><lb />The Pirates can credit their<lb />defense and quickness.on the<lb />diamond to a regimented work-<lb />out program that has the team<lb />physically ready to face off<lb />against any opponent.<lb /><lb />The girls lift weights three<lb />days a week at 6:30 in the morn-<lb />ing, Kee said.
