<lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />Why can't I<lb />be a liberal<lb />Christian?<lb /><lb />Or a Christian liberal?<lb /><lb />LARA OLIVER<lb />| OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />So, I grew up your typical Christian kid. I<lb />went to church every Sunday " often multiple<lb />times " and I went to weekly meetings for<lb />my youth group. I prayed every night, carried<lb />a rosary, and read the Bible for fun (okay, not<lb />really, but I tried).<lb /><lb />Yet, around the age of nine, I found my<lb />faith in question. My best friend, and fellow<lb />Catholic, had just passed away from a heart<lb />murmur. Her death left our fourth grade<lb />class shaken and her closest group of friends<lb />despondent and angry. We spent the majority<lb />of our time that month remembering her death<lb />and putting up a tree memorial for her in the<lb />schoolyard. Her other best friends and I ended<lb />up splitting up the following year.<lb /><lb />Yet what really shook me about her death<lb />was how involved she was in the church. We<lb />were both regular attendees, involved in com-<lb />munity work, and well-liked by the clergy<lb />for our interest in Christ. So, I thought, why<lb />would God take one of His most avid sup-<lb />porters from us? What about that little girl<lb />required her to leave her friends behind? At<lb />first, I was scared. Maybe she didn't pray<lb />enough. Does that mean I'm not praying<lb />enough? Did she sin by accident? Does that<lb />mean IT/] sin by accident?<lb /><lb />For about four years, I was racked by<lb />questions and doubt with my faith caused by<lb />her death. I couldnTt reconcile her untimely<lb />death with our shared, almost identical, faith.<lb /><lb />I went from blaming myself to blaming God<lb /><lb />to just not believing in God anymore. I lashed<lb />out at my parents, became one of those angry<lb />teenage atheists, and thought I would never<lb />look back. But I still felt empty inside. I didnTt<lb />understand it. DidnTt I solve the problem?<lb />WhatTs wrong now?<lb /><lb />As the years went by, I reconciled my faith.<lb />It took time, stress, different denominations<lb />and many heartfelt pleas from my parents to go<lb /><lb />back to church with them.to bring me back to.»<lb /><lb />a more open-minded view of Christianity. Yet<lb />I still had a problem with my faith. It seemed<lb />that a small minority of the American popula-<lb />tion was attempting to permanently side Jesus<lb />with the conservative right. Christ was becom-<lb />ing an American. Not just an American, but a<lb />Republican too. The osecular left? was being<lb />demonized for not wanting prayer in schools,<lb />not keeping the Ten Commandments outside<lb />of courthouses, and wanting to keep America<lb />away from becoming an oligarchy.<lb /><lb />ItTs something that still bothers me, the<lb />fact that you can't be a liberal and a Chris-<lb />tian as well in many peopleTs eyes. One label<lb />denotes one thing, while the other cancels it<lb />out. I say I side liberally on political views,<lb />and people assume I want mandatory abor-<lb />tions, gay sex on billboards outside schools,<lb />and free Mustangs for the homeless. I say ITm<lb />a Christian, and others assume I voted for<lb />George W., keep a Jesus fish on my Chevy<lb />Tahoe, and shrink away in public places from<lb />women wearing hijabs. In reality, ITm none<lb />of those things (the homeless have enough<lb />problems without owning a Ford).<lb /><lb />I think itTs about time we stopped assum-<lb />ing that. being a Christian means wanting<lb />everyone to be a Christian against their will<lb /><lb />(and started acting like it as well), and that.<lb /><lb />it is possible to be a liberal Christian without<lb />being an oxymoron. ItTs time that instead of<lb />using JesusT image to enforce rules we think<lb />he supported, that real Christians start acting<lb />like Christ instead of using his name to spread<lb />hate. Passages such as JesusT rescue of an<lb />accused prostitute and his statement oLet the<lb />one among you who is without sin be the first<lb />to throw a stone at her? (John 8:7) should show<lb />us that Jesus wasnTt nearly as judgmental as<lb />many of his modern followers can be.<lb /><lb />Of course, I donTt think Jesus was a Demo-<lb />crat, a Republican, or even.a member of the<lb />Green Party (although he did have the beard<lb />and sandals for it). I donTt think anyoneTs reli-<lb />gion should blindly direct their political views.<lb />I only think itTs about time that we move away<lb />from the current stereotype of the rich, white,<lb />political man leading us with his strong ofaith?<lb />in Christ. What we need to remember is a poor,<lb />Jewish man from the Middle East once said<lb />oIt is easier for a camel to go through the eye.<lb />of a needle than for a rich man to enter the<lb />Kingdom of Heaven,T(Matthew 19:23).<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />{Your procrastination destination}<lb /><lb />THURSDAY FEBRUARY 14,2008 page A6<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />Happy Unimaginative, Consumerism-Oriented,<lb />Arbitrary, Manipulative and Shallow Interpretation<lb />of Romance Day.<lb /><lb />i WWW. It should<lb />have been Rant of the Day, HANDS<lb />DOWN!<lb /><lb />Cars vs. People<lb /><lb />The continuing struggle<lb /><lb />ALEX LAROCCA<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Whois really in the right? Well by the standards<lb />of law, as we all know, pedestrians are usually always<lb /><lb />in the right. But we have to realize how the world.<lb /><lb />really works. Outside of a city (New York, L.A., etc.),<lb />no one really knows. When I get behind the wheel,<lb />every single pedestrian is an inconsiderate jackass<lb />who I am trying not to hit. When I am a pedestrian,<lb />every single driver is a crazed lunatic trying to hit<lb />me. So when will the match finally end?<lb /><lb />Most everyone knows that Greenville drivers<lb />are not the sharpest knives in the drawer. Almost<lb />every day of driving, one can see a new experi-<lb />ence in stupidity ... or cause a new experience<lb />in stupidity. I either walk or bike to school, so<lb />I have had my fair share of scares on the road.<lb />Once, while riding my bike down 5" Street, in the<lb />legally-allocated bike lane, I was coming upon the<lb />intersection at Forest Hills. The driver of a big<lb />truck pulled past the stop sign and almost into<lb />the bike lane while keeping his head turned to the<lb />left, away from me, looking for a chance to turn.<lb />As I was coming up to the truck, my head began<lb /><lb />to discuss the future: oWell he isnTt looking right.<lb /><lb />I know what he is waiting for, and he isnTt look-<lb /><lb />ing right. He has to look right. Who wouldn'Tt?:<lb /><lb />I could get hit ... badly. Well, here I go.? Just as<lb />my rear tire " not to mention my leg " was near<lb />his headlight, he went. As luck would have it, the<lb />vehicle brushed by my leg, and the only harm was<lb />a lot of cursing. Now, obviously I wasnTt being<lb /><lb />completely sane in doing this, but a simple head<lb />cocking would have avoided that..<lb /><lb />On the other side of the spectrum, bikers and pedes-<lb />trians are crazy. Riding through campus in the early<lb />afternoon is a game of Vehicular Manslaughter that you<lb />don't want to win. No one cares where they walk, and<lb /><lb />sometimes no one cares to even look at the big metal .<lb /><lb />machines that have the easy ability to kill you. When<lb />I was younger, my mom always said, oLook both ways<lb />.. Usually that involves left and right, but we all come<lb />from different places and hear different things.<lb /><lb />For the most part, however, during the day, with<lb />the sun and all, we usually avoid any of those mishaps,<lb />and no one gets hurt or in trouble. The real stupidity<lb />of bikers and pedestrians, I feel, comes out at night.<lb /><lb />How is it that a supposedly sane individual can<lb />dress all in black while riding a bike in the wrongT<lb />direction down the street when it is pitch black out?<lb />How can a pedestrian, while crossing 10th Street<lb />from the Hill, blindly ignore the big red hand that<lb />says oDonTt Walk? while a parade of tempered and<lb />annoyed drivers waits for the light to turn green?<lb /><lb />As both a driver and a non-driver, I can see<lb />both sides pretty clearly, and I think the problem<lb />just stems from who wants to be right. Many<lb />people who are put into those situations run the<lb />phrase in their head oHit me! Hit me! Hit me so I<lb />can drag you out of the car!? or oI wish I had hit<lb />them so I could teach them a lesson.? I feel the<lb />latter isnTt as common, but perhaps the answer<lb /><lb />really lies in just having some patience and real-<lb /><lb />izing that, like the customer, the other person is<lb />always right ... even when they are wrong.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Sports Editor<lb /><lb />Arianne Swanek<lb />Head Copy Editor<lb /><lb />Lizz Wells<lb />Photo Editor<lb /><lb />Happy<lb /><lb />ValentineTs<lb /><lb />Day!<lb /><lb />Celebrate it anyway<lb /><lb />LISA ENSMINGER<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Today is ValentineTs Day. So, are you in a rela-<lb />tionship, or single? Are you dreading this day of<lb />love? Either way, single or not, you can celebrate.<lb />Now, I know it is an overrated Hallmark holiday,<lb />but it is not going to escape us anytime soon, so<lb />why not just enjoy? I know some of us become<lb />bitter or stressed on this lovey-dovey day we call<lb />ValentineTs Day because it is either Single Aware-<lb />ness Day for the most of us, or we have to make<lb /><lb />sure we buy our significant other a perfect card<lb /><lb />and chocolate, but no matter what your status is,<lb />try to make the best of it!<lb /><lb />Now I must admit my heart sinks into my<lb />chest at times when I see radiating hearts hud-<lb />dling over a madly-in-love couple, or when my<lb />friend receives a bouquet of red roses form her<lb />boyfriend. Basically, I just get a little jealous<lb />because I do not have that special someone<lb />sending me surprises (and ITm sure I am not the<lb />only one with these bitter feelings). But then I<lb />remember that not getting gifts on a random<lb /><lb />_ day out of the year is not that important anyway<lb />when I remember I have other relationships to "<lb /><lb />be thankful for. <lb />PAGE B6<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />SPIVEY continued from Bl<lb /><lb />rebounds in conference action,<lb />hitting nearly 40 percent of her<lb />three-pointers and averaging<lb />two three-pointers a game.<lb /><lb />Spivey Ts experience on<lb />the floor is helping her game<lb />mature, but she still recognizes<lb />the parts of her game she needs<lb />to work on most.<lb /><lb />oI need to work on my man<lb />to man defense, putting more<lb />pressure on the ball,? the tal-<lb />ented freshman said. oAs for<lb />the team, If we can pick up our<lb />defensive intensity, we can com-<lb />pete with anyone.<lb /><lb />oIt always starts on the<lb />defensive end, and if we can<lb />accomplish that, our offense will<lb />fall into place.?<lb /><lb />The Lady Pirates have had<lb />trouble finding rhythm at times<lb />this year on both ends of the floor,<lb />but Spivey and her teammates<lb />are working to find the consis-<lb />tency this team needs to stay com-<lb />petitive within. Conference USA.<lb /><lb />As for Spivey, her rhythm<lb />lies in taking the game to its<lb />roots"shooting hoops with<lb />her dad.<lb /><lb />For an hour before each<lb />home game, Allison ask her dad<lb />to rebound for her shots, oso itTs<lb />just like how it used to be, one<lb />on one,? she said.<lb /><lb />This ritual gets Spivey into<lb />her game mindset.<lb /><lb />oI get more shots in this<lb />way, and opposed to drills, this<lb />kind of practice with my dad<lb />just puts me into that game-time<lb />rhythm,? Spivey said.<lb /><lb />Whether shooting hoops<lb />with her dad, or fighting through<lb />defenders on the outside of<lb />the key, Allison recognizes<lb />that with practice and experi-<lb />ence, her game will continue<lb />to elevate and bring in greater<lb />consistency for the freshman<lb />sharp-shooter.<lb /><lb />Already a double-double<lb />threat every night, Spivey is<lb />going to have. to rely on big<lb />efforts from ECUTs post-play-<lb />ers, taking pressure off ECUTs<lb /><lb />guards and creating more open -<lb /><lb />shots for Young, Terry and<lb />Spivey on the perimeter.<lb /><lb />Consistent efforts from<lb />ECU's deep bench and strong<lb />starting lineup is what ECU<lb />needs to improve upon their<lb />overall 10-13 record, and con-<lb />ference mark of 4-6.<lb /><lb />ECU, after Spivey shoots<lb />pregame with her dad, hopes to<lb />turn its two-game losing streak<lb />into a big win Friday night,<lb />as the Pirates face off against<lb />Southern Miss in Minges Coli-<lb /><lb />_ Seum at 7 p.m.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Fantastic Selection<lb /><lb />~famous catalog?<lb /><lb />WINTER COATS<lb /><lb />1/2 PRICE<lb /><lb />252-758-8612<lb /><lb />Division of ULB,<lb />M-S 10-6 Sun 1-5<lb /><lb />£3 nei gor BRN Seg tr kbd ath hn An ama Bae iS pang ee ren ve<lb /><lb />APPLY ONLINE!<lb />ENTER<lb /><lb />PROMOTIONAL<lb /><lb />(6)8))<lb /><lb />NCC2015<lb /><lb />pin Gah iwi sari sean set eon aoe anys ta<lb /><lb />SAVE $125.00"<lb /><lb />Hurry!
