One of the most popular<lb />purchases is candy in the form of<lb /><lb />Chocolate has been proven to raise levels of certain ~happy chemicals in the brain.<lb /><lb />chocolate, a favorite among women<lb />in particular.<lb /><lb />What is it about chocolate that<lb />makes people so crazy on the four-<lb />teenth of February? Is chocolate<lb />really an aphrodisiac, as popular cul-<lb />ture suggests? And what is the cor-<lb /><lb />relation, if any, between Valentines<lb /><lb />Day and chocolate?<lb />Modern Valentines Day is cel-<lb /><lb />ebrated by lovers and friends alike,<lb /><lb />who exchange boxes of chocolate, sen-<lb />timental cards and little candy hearts<lb /><lb />an<lb /><lb />with clichéd sentiments as tokens of<lb />mutual affection.<lb /><lb />Casanova reportedly consumed<lb />chocolate to boost his endurance<lb />before seducing his conquests.<lb /><lb />Thousands of years, ago Aztecs<lb />and Mayans discovered the cocoa<lb />bean and in turn ascribed aphrodi-<lb />siac qualities to it. Aztec emperor,<lb />Montezuma, is said to have consumed<lb />nearly 50 goblets of chocolate each<lb />day in order to fuel his sexual ren-<lb />dezvous.<lb /><lb />Montezuma introduced Spanish<lb />explorer, Cortez, to chocolate who in<lb />turn took the cocoa beans back to his<lb />native country in an attempt to keep its<lb />libido-heightening powers a secret.<lb /><lb />However, the power of chocolate<lb />didnt remain a secret for long after<lb />monks began to cultivate it by creat-<lb />ing plantations.<lb /><lb />The Spanish were one of the first<lb />cultures to add sweeteners to the cocoa<lb />beans and create what we now consider<lb />chocolate.<lb /><lb />Today choc-<lb />olate remains<lb />one of the most<lb />frequently pur-<lb />chased gifts.<lb />According to<lb />the Chocolate<lb />Manufacturers<lb />Association and<lb />National Con-<lb />fectioners Asso-<lb />ciation, more<lb />than 36 million<lb />heart-shaped<lb />boxes of choco-<lb />late are sold for<lb />Valentine's Day<lb /><lb />So is choc-<lb />olate a sexual<lb />aphrodisiac?<lb /><lb />According to<lb />a study found in<lb />the 2005 issue<lb />of the Journal of<lb />Sexual Medicine<lb />and conducted<lb />by the Univer-<lb />sity of Milan<lb />in Italy, women<lb />who consume<lb />chocolate on a<lb />daily basis have ©<lb />increased<lb />sexual appetite<lb /><lb />compared to those who don't.<lb />Since the study relied on self-<lb />reports from 163 Italian women, it<lb /><lb />is questionable as to whether the<lb />effects are actually physical or psy-<lb /><lb />chological.<lb /><lb />The mood enhancers found in the<lb />ingredient phenylethylamine are know<lb />to act a love chemical by increasing<lb />serotonin. This increase causes rapid<lb />mood change, a rise in blood pressure<lb />and an increase in heart rate, inducing<lb />those feelings of well-being, border-<lb />ing on the euphoria usually associated<lb />with being in love.<lb /><lb />Although calling chocolate an<lb />aphrodisiac may be a stretch, it does<lb />heighten chemical levels in the brain<lb />and gives consumers an energy<lb />boost.<lb /><lb />So this V-Day, reach for the Her-<lb />sheys and spread the love around.<lb /><lb />-. The<lb />root of Junos teenage rebellion<lb />is left ambiguous, though the<lb />character expresses her skepti-<lb />cism over the perceived stability<lb />of interpersonal relationships<lb />many times by commenting how<lb />her mother left her father years<lb />ago and now has a new spouse<lb />and ~replacement children.<lb />Several instances in the film<lb />also make reference to Juno<lb />being prescribed to a variety of<lb />behavior-modification medica-<lb />tions, including a reference to<lb />an unseen episode involving a<lb />mall fountain. It is this atypical<lb />outlook which leads the more<lb /><lb />experienced Juno into the arms:<lb /><lb />of the virginal Paulie, who has<lb />been in love with her for quite<lb />some time. Junos reasons for<lb />initiating the encounter fluc-<lb /><lb />tuate between her being bored<lb />that night and being in love<lb />with Paulie. Likewise, Junos<lb />decision to carry her baby to<lb />term is viewed with wariness by<lb />her family, as well as by the par-<lb />ents of her unborn child. Paulie<lb />and her friend Leah view. her<lb />decision as irregular, but not as<lb />anything really unusual, acom-<lb />mentary of how commonplace<lb /><lb />unplanned teenage pregnancy<lb /><lb />has become in our culture.<lb />The ensemble cast buoys the<lb />film to another plateau. Ellen<lb />Page has received a nomination<lb />for Best Actress at this years<lb />Academy Awards, following in<lb />the tradition of young women<lb />being nominated for creating<lb />exceptional roles in which their<lb />characters act with a worldview<lb />that does not belie their youth<lb />(Linda Blair in The Exorcist,<lb />Tatum O'Neal in Paper Moon).<lb /><lb />Michael Cera performs ably as<lb />always, delivering the role as a<lb />quiet, awkward young man who<lb />is repeatedly a victim to circum-<lb />stances beyond his control and<lb />understanding. Junos father,<lb />played by J.K. Simmons (HBOs<lb />Oz, Spider-Man) steals every<lb />scene with genial aplomb.<lb /><lb />Juno isnt really a family<lb />film or a date movie. Like the<lb />characters themselves, the film<lb />cannot be so easily pigeonholed<lb />into a quick and easy descrip-<lb />tive. Juno is a film about people<lb />with realistic, complex relation-<lb />ships, in which not everyone<lb />ends up happy in the end. At<lb />times it can be hilarious and<lb />heartbreaking, often in the<lb />same breath. Do yourself a favor<lb />and check it out.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />JOHNSON continued from A4<lb /><lb />Johnson is a folk-style singer, songwriter,<lb />filmmaker and surfer. from Hawaii. Originally,<lb />Johnson was a professional surfer until a surfing<lb />accident at the Banzai Pipeline cost him his front<lb />teeth and 150 stitches. After the accident Johnson<lb />pursued a degree in film from the University of<lb />California at Santa Barbara. During his time as a<lb />student there, he decided to begin dedicating all<lb />his time and passion to making music.<lb /><lb />In 2001, Johnson released his first major<lb />studio effort, Brushfire. Fairytales, that was<lb />received with substantial acclaim from critics.<lb />After the release of his first effort, he garnered<lb />the creation of a loyal and receptive fan base.<lb />Since his first release he has released four other<lb />major label studio albums and a load of EPs'and<lb /><lb />strictly to-Internet releases. Brushfire Fairytales, "<lb /><lb />though, signified the start of a lucrative and<lb /><lb />but sadly lacks some of the pizzazz that his last<lb />albums have been loaded with. Although it offers<lb />an enormous array of musical range, it lacks the<lb />consistency that made all of his last albums so<lb />compelling and masterful. It by no means is the<lb />nail in the coffin for the career of Johnson, but<lb />it does without a doubt disappoint in certain<lb />aspects. '<lb /><lb />In retrospect, Johnsons new album is moving<lb />and graceful. Songs like Angel have the abil-<lb />ity to churn your gut and make your heart drop.<lb />Other songs like Enemy seem a bit sophomoric<lb />for the abijity of Johnson. In the end, Sleep<lb />Through Static is worthy of a listening, but dont<lb />expect the same emotion-clinching album that<lb />Johnson has made in the past.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb /><lb />immense career for Johnson.<lb /><lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />The new Johnson effort, Sleep Through Static,<lb /><lb />offers all the classic Johnson characteristics<lb /><lb />For Carry Out<lb />Call 758-9191<lb /><lb />Greenville, NC<lb />(254) 757-1013<lb /><lb />(232) 7585 3<lb />rw.cbeech.con<lb /><lb />FTV Fi 4 I] 2,<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />TOON) |<lb /><lb />! Opin<lb /><lb />Students need<lb />to chill out<lb /><lb />Leave your worries behind<lb /><lb />LARA OLIVER<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Pirate Rants about people stealing other peo-<lb />ples boyfriends, roommates yelling at each other<lb />over cell phones in between classes about who<lb />left the milk out, passive-aggressive comments<lb />towards teachers over disagreements on politics,<lb />angry driving leading to torn up cars (and in some<lb />cases) people ... Its time we chilled out, guys.<lb /><lb />These are the best years of our lives, and we'll<lb />never see them again. Its a time period for finding<lb />out who we are, what we want to do with our lives<lb />and who we want to spend them with. These years<lb /><lb />should be filled with excitement, care-free weekends ©<lb /><lb />and learning (when we get around to it). Why do<lb />we spend this time, when our bodies and minds are<lb />in their prime, just yelling at each other? Yelling<lb />about a sandwich being made incorrectly, yelling<lb />about how you disagree over whether SUVs are evil,<lb />yelling over how some skank stole your man. Its<lb />just a whole lot of yelling about nothing.<lb /><lb />We can't even have friendships anymore without<lb />feeling that some source of drama or sadness has to<lb />fuel everything. Girls attack each other on Facebook<lb />walls to show who's Alpha-Female; boys fight strang-<lb />ers in bars to show off to all their friends. Is this really<lb />getting us anywhere? Is all this anger and violence<lb />really making anyone happy in the long run?<lb /><lb />Sure, school may take a toll on us, and that<lb />fight we had with our significant other may still be<lb />weighing on our minds for the rest of the weekend,<lb />but something we all need to realize is that this<lb />stress won't last forever. That algebra test won't<lb />make you a worse person if you get a D instead of<lb /><lb />a.B. Your best friend will probably forgive you after -<lb /><lb />you had a fight with her about who was going to be<lb />the designated driver this weekend. Your professor<lb />will listen to you if you have a problem in class and<lb />will try to help you work around it. So why let it<lb />sour you and make the rest of your day worse?<lb />We need to stop letting this stress get a<lb />stranglehold on us and realize that its just a part<lb />of life. Stress is going to happen, but we need to<lb />learn to deal with it rationally. Yelling at your<lb />boyfriend just makes him angry and your throat<lb />sore. Calling your best friend cruel names isnt<lb />going to make her like you any better, and its not<lb />going to make you more popular. Being a jerk to<lb /><lb />the professor is just a more difficult way to make |<lb /><lb />a bad grade than not showing up. So why not just<lb />take a minute to calm down and talk to the people<lb /><lb />just like you, and probably have just as much stress<lb />in their life as you do in yours.<lb /><lb />So while everybody else is busy yelling, I think<lb />Ill go and have a beer at Christies. You stressed<lb />out kids are free to join me.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Avoid apathy,<lb />get involved<lb /><lb />How | learned to do nothing but g0<lb />to class"<lb /><lb />YAZID FINN<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Continuing in this series I have taken upon<lb />myself to spread to the masses, I will expand upon<lb />issues presented in last weeks episode. To begin, I<lb />made the promise of revealing this election season's<lb />antagonist, and to some it may come as no surprise.<lb />None other than M. Cole Jones still occupies the<lb />walls of Mendenhall Student Center in spirit. From<lb />his throne in one of the many rooms now long<lb />forgotten in MSC, his hand and endorsement have<lb />already been thrown into the ring. To whom, how-<lb />ever, will remain a secret-until the night of filing<lb />following our return from spring break<lb /><lb />Some questioned how exactly they could pos-<lb />sibly get their foot in the door when the door to the<lb />metaphorical SGA building so rarely opens. Just<lb />like national government, unless someone becomes<lb />afflicted with some form of mental illness or dies,<lb />seats seldam open. Nonetheless, there is hope for<lb />those looking to engage themselves and begin on a<lb />journey through their own collegic test of endurance.<lb />The first step is through the legislative branch, which<lb />only recently restructured itself and is now more user<lb />friendly. Get a seat while they're hot, as in a few weeks<lb />you will be out of luck till next semester.<lb /><lb />If you do not have the credits or politics is not<lb />your cup of tea, there are multiple other venues<lb />available for students to still get involved and<lb />make a difference. The Student Union program<lb />available for ECU students provides individuals<lb />with the opportunity to voice themselves through<lb />arts or music, while entertaining thousands of<lb />their peers every year. Events as seemingly simple,<lb />as movies aired in Hendrix Theater are carefully<lb />tailored in hopes of reaching the general tastes of<lb />the campus. Think you can do better? Prove it and<lb />join the committees that direct these programs.<lb /><lb />This is the final editorial in this trilogy, as next<lb />week I will faithfully return to my normal routine.<lb />These articles were not for naught, as they have already<lb />served their purpose in attracting the attention of those<lb />I set out to reach. If you suddenly feel inspired and have<lb />the time to invest into the campus as well, then please,<lb />by all means, do so. You will be setting yourself apart<lb />from those in our society who have forgotten the phrase<lb /><lb />long-term gratification and prove there are still a<lb />handful of altruistic people in the world.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />age procrastination destination}<lb /><lb />TUESDAY FEBRUARY 12, 2008<lb /><lb />PAGE AS<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />Dont spend a fortune on me; just let me<lb />know you are thinking of me.<lb /><lb />AFTER FDA FINES, THE RED CKOOS<lb />BEGINS RE-LABELING DONATED BLOOD,<lb /><lb />AAAS<lb /><lb />il<lb /><lb />Nl<lb /><lb />8 PostTIve FOR |<lb /><lb />HEPATITIS 8<lb />-WEST NILE VIRVS<lb />MAD cow DISEASE<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made.in Pirate Rants. LEWIS<lb />OPINION EDITOR<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Surely Im about to tick some people off, but<lb />first let me say that although I do not smoke, I<lb />wholeheartedly support your right to kill yourself<lb />if that is what you so desire. They're your lungs<lb />after all. Bill Clintons anti-tobacco crusade in<lb />the 1990s was a farce; his love of cigars was well<lb />documented. And, lets face it, Nextel Cup just<lb />doesnt pack quite the same punch as Winston<lb />Cup. Smokers rights advocates will find no bigger<lb />supporter than me.<lb /><lb />That being said, I support my right to breathe<lb />clean air, and like the majority of smokers Ive<lb />encountered, when it all boils down to it, its<lb />really all about me. If the smell of your smoke<lb />prevents me from enjoying a delicious meal with<lb />the wife at Outback, then snuff that sucker out.<lb />No ones paying $50 for a side of your secondhand<lb />smoke.<lb /><lb />Besides, do you really want to give the impres-<lb />sion that you are that weak and sad? Im fat and<lb />love to eat, but I can go for an hour without food.<lb />Do you honestly think anyone really believes<lb />you can't go for the hour it takes to consume a<lb />meal without puffing on a cigarette? In fact, I<lb />ate breakfast Saturday morning around 7:30, and<lb />didnt eat again until 8 that night. How many of<lb />you went that long without a cigarette? Its all in<lb />your head, friends.<lb /><lb />ECU recently enacted a policy prohibiting<lb />smoking within 25 feet of any building on campus.<lb />Now Im no math major, but as I walk through<lb />a choking cloud of cigarette smoke and wade.<lb />through a pile of cigarette butts on my way out<lb />one door and into another, its apparent that few<lb />here are. Another sign of the weakness of smok-<lb />ers: they can still smoke, but cant take the time<lb />to walk a few extra steps in order to do so.<lb /><lb />People who smoke for 30 years and then<lb />try to sue the tobacco companies for their self-<lb />inflicted maladies dont deserve one cent. Cancer<lb />sticks were called that long before the 1990s. The<lb />information has been out there for quite a while<lb />now, and no guns were held to their heads. If they<lb />were too dumb to quit before it was too late, tough<lb />turkey. Shouldve gone cold turkey instead.<lb /><lb />As a fan of clean air, Id have no problem if<lb />every establishment in America banned smoking<lb />on their premises. As a supporter of smoker's<lb />rights, it should be strictly a business decision that<lb />smokers should grudgingly support. Just as you<lb />have a right to smoke and smell like an ashtray,<lb />non-smokers have a right to breathe and smell like<lb />clean laundry. Tolerance is a two-way street.<lb /><lb />I am dead-set against a government-mandated<lb />ban on smoking. Like the decision to smoke, the<lb />decision not to smoke should be left up to the<lb />individual. As always, common sense and the free<lb />enterprise system do a lot more good for society<lb />than the government ever can.<lb /><lb />Jesse Ventura once described religion as a<lb />crutch for weak-minded people. Id say he can't<lb />see the forest for the cigar in his mouth.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />J.D. <lb />Sports<lb /><lb />ECU finishes on<lb />winning note<lb /><lb />KELLEN HOLTZMAN<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The ECU ice hockey team<lb />ended its third season on a<lb />positive note over the weekend<lb />by sweeping South Carolina. The<lb />Pirates knocked off the Game-<lb />cocks 10-8 Friday night and 9-4<lb />in the Saturday matinee.<lb /><lb />ECU finished with a spotless<lb />7-0 record at Bladez on Ice Rink<lb />and improved its all-time home<lb />record to 23-3.<lb /><lb />The Pirates honored seven<lb />seniors before both games,<lb />including goaltender and team<lb />co-founder Brent Falcon.<lb /><lb />Out of the three seasons<lb />I played here, this is probably<lb />the best team we've had and the<lb /><lb />tightest team off of the ice, said<lb /><lb />Falcon, who started both Friday<lb />and Saturday's games. I had a<lb />blast. It was a great way to end<lb />my career.<lb /><lb />The senior weekend was<lb />of particular importance to<lb />the players who watched the<lb />program develop from the very<lb />beginning.<lb /><lb />Its a pretty big deal, being<lb />the last original class graduat-<lb />ing, said senior defenseman Jon<lb />Koritz. After losing our rank-<lb />ings due to ineligible players- it<lb />was a really big deal to win these<lb />last games. ,<lb /><lb />ECU led 3-1 heading into the<lb />second period of Friday's game,<lb />when the intensity picked up<lb />significantly. oe<lb /><lb />After an lan Falcon goal<lb />made the score 4-2, USC scored<lb />back-to-back goals to knot the<lb />game up at 4-4 by the midway<lb />point of the period.<lb /><lb />Sophomore Chris Cesario<lb />put the Pirates back in front at<lb /><lb />see HOCKEY page Al2<lb /><lb />Photo by Robyn McLawhorn<lb /><lb />. I didnt expect it to be<lb /><lb />that physical. We went with the<lb />punches and we didnt come out<lb />with a win.<lb /><lb />Gabriela Husarova sparked<lb />the comeback attempt with a<lb />3-pointer. Husarova then stole<lb />the Green Wave's inbound pass<lb />and passed the ball to LaCoya<lb />Terry, who made the basket and<lb /><lb />got the foul.<lb /><lb />Terry converted the free<lb />throw and the Pirates were only<lb />down by two points. ©<lb /><lb />Jasmine Young then scored<lb />a fast break layup with :48<lb />seconds remaining to tie the<lb />game at 65. Tulane followed<lb /><lb />with a pair of free throws and<lb />although the Pirates had a few<lb />more opportunities, they were<lb />unable catch up.<lb /><lb />I was proud that we were<lb />able to come back. We couldve<lb />folded...we were just a little bit<lb />too late, said Pirates Coach<lb />Sharon Balwin-Tener.<lb /><lb />After having won their pre-<lb />vious four games, things were<lb />starting to look up for the Pirate<lb />squad.<lb /><lb />The loss against Tulane<lb />proved to be a very frustrating<lb />loss for the team.<lb /><lb />I was frustrated the whole<lb /><lb />in a row. ECU lost to Tulane last Thursday and then at UTEP on Sunday.<lb /><lb />game, Baldwin-Tener said.<lb />I thought we took a big step<lb />backward today. We've been<lb />playing well. We've been playing<lb />together as a team and today I<lb />didnt think we did that.<lb /><lb />ECU came out strong early<lb /><lb />in the game with a 7-2 run, but<lb /><lb />its lead wouldnt last long.<lb />~ ECUs largest lead was by<lb />five in the first half. ,<lb /><lb />ECU was plagued by turn-<lb />overs having 13 in the first half<lb />and 17 in the game.<lb /><lb />We were very careless<lb /><lb />with the basketball early in the<lb /><lb />game"it wasn't important to<lb /><lb />treak screeches to a halt<lb /><lb />us, said Baldwin-Tener. Tulane<lb />has a very good defensive team<lb />and that showed.<lb /><lb />Husarova and Terry were the<lb />leading scorers for the Pirates,<lb />with 14 points.<lb /><lb />Ashley Langford of Tulane<lb />led all scorers with 28 points.<lb /><lb />_ ECUs struggles were appar-<lb />ent to all of the players and<lb />coaches against Tulane.<lb /><lb />We were just out of sync<lb />tonight, said Young. Corey<lb />Houk then stepped to the plate<lb />and got just enough of the<lb />ball to send it over the center<lb />field fence, giving the Golden<lb />Flashes an early 2-0 lead.<lb /><lb />Kent State threatened to<lb />add to its advantage in the<lb />fourth when Jessica Carmichael<lb /><lb />singled in the infield to begin<lb /><lb />the inning. However, Kaui Tom<lb />made a spectacular play to erase<lb /><lb />Carmichael at second and threw<lb />to first in time to complete a<lb />double play. ,<lb /><lb />The Pirates responded in<lb />their half of the fourth when<lb />Jessica Johnson and St. Ledger<lb />blasted back-to-back long balls<lb />to draw their team even at 2-2.<lb />With one out, Sissy Jimenez<lb />singled and advanced to second<lb />on a wild pitch but she would go<lb />no further as Beth Nolan struck<lb />out to end the threat.<lb /><lb />et Ledger proved. the<lb />Pirates hero in the bottom<lb />of the sixth when she hit her<lb />second dinger in as many at-<lb />bats to give ECU the winning<lb /><lb />HOCKEY continued from Al0<lb /><lb />the 9:03 mark, but the resilient<lb />Gamecocks answered less than<lb />two minutes later to make the<lb />score 5-5. «<lb />Sean Burns recaptured the<lb />lead for ECU just 22 seconds<lb />after the USC goal. Burns out-<lb />skated a Gamecock defender to<lb />gain control of a loose puck, cre-<lb />ating a breakaway. ECU failed to capital-<lb />ize on a 5-on-3 advantage as<lb />a Gamecock converted a back-<lb />hand shot to complete the rare,<lb />shorthanded goal.<lb /><lb />The Pirates finally landed<lb />a power play goal with 1:27<lb />remaining when freshman Sam<lb />Duehring blasted a slapshot into<lb />the back of the net to give his<lb />team a 7-6 lead heading into the<lb /><lb />third period. ,<lb /><lb />ECU pushed its lead to 10-6<lb />in the final period before USC<lb />added two late goals.<lb /><lb />The Pirates controlled the<lb />puck for the majority of the first<lb />period and outshot the Game-<lb />cocks, 19-5.<lb /><lb />ECU led 3-1 at the conclu-<lb />sion of the first, behind goals<lb />from Joe Colatuno, Corey Fleitz<lb />and Nathan Buhr. ,<lb /><lb />ECU dominated the second<lb />game of the weekend from the<lb />very Start.<lb /><lb />The Pirates scored an<lb />astounding three goals in just<lb />21 seconds of play in the early-<lb />goings of the first period. ECU<lb />entered the locker room with a<lb />6-1 lead after one period in the<lb />books.<lb /><lb />That was the whole point to<lb />this game, said senior defense-<lb />man Jon Ciecko. Just to get out<lb />to a quick start and have fun.<lb />with it [the game].<lb /><lb />Jeremy Lang seemed to<lb />have wrapped up the game in<lb />the second period when he got<lb />loose on a breakaway and deked<lb />his way to his first goal of the<lb />weekend. 3<lb /><lb />USC managed to tighten<lb />the lead to 8-4 with 6:26 left<lb />in the third period, but senior<lb />Jon Huck cashed in an insur-<lb /><lb />ance score in his final game as<lb />ar hare. ,<lb />Eve been: here since. the<lb />beginning, Huck said of his<lb />time at ECU. I wanted to go<lb />out with a bang ... forfeiting<lb />those games was kind of a blow.<lb /><lb />It wasnt really the way we<lb />wanted to go out but playing<lb /><lb />these games help.<lb />Those forfeited games are<lb />the biggest downside to what<lb />was an otherwise successful<lb />year for ECU ice hockey. The<lb />Pirates finished with an overall<lb />record of 14-4 (not counting<lb />forfeited games) and added to<lb />the already solid foundation for<lb />the future. |<lb />ECU will lose several key<lb />players for next season, but a<lb /><lb />bulk of the scoring will return<lb /><lb />with rising seniors Ian and<lb />Tyler Falcon leading the way.<lb />Burns and Cesario, two of the<lb />Pirates most prolific scorers,<lb />will also be expected to produce<lb />consistently. |<lb /><lb />The elder Falcon will pass his<lb />pads down to freshman Matt Dal-<lb />getty, who got plenty of on-the-<lb />job training this season and looks<lb />like a lock to man the Pirates net<lb />for the next three years.<lb /><lb />Coach Wayne Cox believes<lb />progress was made despite<lb />not making the ACHA South<lb />Regionals.<lb /><lb />Sam [Duehring] has got<lb />so much skill, Donovan [Dean],<lb />weve got Nick [Dinardo],<lb />Cox said of his underclassmen.<lb />Chris [Cesario] ; Kyle [Tote]<lb />-all these kids can play hockey<lb />and we've got kids that didnt<lb />make the team that could step<lb />up next year. | :<lb /><lb />We've got four new kids<lb />coming in. We've got a young<lb />kid coming in from Philadelphia<lb />and a kid coming in from New<lb />Jersey. Its going to make the<lb />program get bigger.<lb /><lb />All of the pieces appear<lb />to be in place for a return to<lb />South Regionals in 2009. And<lb />with 13 returning juniors and<lb />sophomores, a first-ever trip to<lb />nationals is a realistic possibil-<lb />ity for the near future of EC<lb />ice hockey.<lb /><lb />This writer-can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />BBALL continued from AlO<lb /><lb />We've come too far and<lb />we've been playing too hard<lb />to go out and play like we did<lb />tonight. I thought we really just<lb />didnt play tonight, Baldwin-<lb />Tener added.<lb /><lb />The Pirates knew what they<lb />would face in regards to the Sun-<lb />days contest against undefeated<lb />conference rival UTEP.<lb /><lb />UTEP has a very good bas-<lb />ketball team and were going to<lb />have to play a lot better than we<lb />played today to even make it a<lb />game, said Balwin-Tener.<lb /><lb />Sunday's game between<lb />ECU and UTEP was televised<lb />nationally by ESPN.<lb /><lb />ECU kept it close, but<lb />UTEPs strong second half<lb />surged the Miners to a:81-53<lb />win.<lb /><lb />Its going to be a tough one<lb />and we're going to be on national<lb />TV so hopefully we can show<lb /><lb />everyone what the Pirates are<lb />made of, said Young, who had<lb />13 points against Tulane.<lb /><lb />The 2 p.m. televised event<lb />proved to be too much for the<lb />Pirates, as UTEP extended its<lb />winning streak to 15 games in<lb />the win.<lb /><lb />ECU is now 4-6 in the con-<lb />ference and 10-13 overall.<lb /><lb />The Pirates led early on<lb />in the contest and went into<lb />halftime down only 30-26, but<lb />the Miners pulled away in the<lb />second half.<lb /><lb />Jasmine Young had 18 points<lb />against UTEP, while LaCoya<lb />Terry had 9.<lb /><lb />The Lady Pirates return<lb />home for a 7 p.m. game Friday,<lb />Feb. 15 against Southern Miss.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Photo by Robyn McLawhorn<lb /><lb />3-2 margin.<lb /><lb />Paisley won her second<lb />consecutive contest, pushing<lb />her record to 2-1 and earning<lb />her third complete game of the<lb />season. Sumner then<lb />recorded her second double of<lb />the game, scoring Andrews to<lb />push the Pirates on top 1-0.<lb />ECU added another run in the<lb />sixth.<lb /><lb />The Golden Flashes drew<lb />within a run in their half of the<lb />sixth as Kim Hamilton took<lb />Paisleys offering over the left<lb />center field fence to leadoff the<lb />half-inning. The Pirates were<lb />then set down in order in the top<lb />of the seventh, setting up a dra-<lb />matic ending to the contest.<lb /><lb />Ashlee Hein reached first<lb />on a leadoff walk then advanced<lb />to second on a single by pinch<lb />hitter Lauren Brocklehurst.<lb />With both runners at second<lb />and third with two outs, Hamil-<lb />ton was hit by a pitch to load the<lb />bases. How-<lb />ever, ECU would strike back in<lb />their half of the third.<lb /><lb />On a O-1 pitch, Sumner<lb />left no doubt as to where the<lb />ball was headed as it easily<lb />cleared the wall in right center,<lb />knotting the score at one. Two<lb /><lb />batters later, Jessica Johnson<lb />smashed her first home run of<lb />the year, scoring Merrida and<lb />providing the Pirates with a 3-1<lb />lead.
