As long as they have<lb />some comparable form of health<lb />insurance, they can opt-out,<lb />which mean that they provide<lb />proof of already having health<lb />insurance,? Viverette said.<lb /><lb />Currently, the company of<lb /><lb />Pearce and Pearce provides |<lb /><lb />ECU students with voluntary<lb />health insurance.<lb /><lb />Full coverage under this<lb />policy is $1,125 yearly. According to<lb />Viverette, the policy will be<lb />covered by financial aid.<lb />Because it is a requirement,<lb />the financial aid office will have<lb />to supply the fund to those who<lb />need them,? Viverette said.<lb />While the hard waiver<lb />policy has not been imple-<lb />mented for undergraduates, stu-<lb />dents in the doctoral program<lb />have already been required<lb />to carry health insurance.<lb />83 doctoral students<lb />employed as graduate assistants<lb />carry an insurance oe paid<lb /><lb />For Carry Out<lb />Call 758-9191<lb /><lb />Erin<lb />Major at ECU:<lb /><lb />Nursing<lb />Occupation:<lb />Student<lb /><lb />Why I donate:<lb />Extra spending<lb />cash<lb /><lb />for by ECU.<lb /><lb />The policy from, ECU is<lb />strictly optional, but is used<lb />as a recruiting device for the<lb />doctoral program.<lb /><lb />We offer it as a fringe ben-<lb />efit to attract the best students<lb />to ECU,? said Patrick Pelli-<lb />cane, dean of the department of<lb />graduate studies..<lb /><lb />In order to qualify for<lb />paid insurance, students<lb />must be enrolled in the full-<lb /><lb />time requirement of 9 credit.<lb /><lb />hours and work at least 20<lb />hours as a graduate assistant.<lb />Paid health insurance is a<lb />popular incentive offered by<lb />many graduate and doctoral<lb />programs across the country.<lb />Students in these programs<lb />find this incentive to be helpful,<lb />usually because they are older in<lb /><lb />age and often to maintain families<lb />while in pursuit of their degree.<lb /><lb />Graduate and professional<lb />students are benefiting from<lb />this service. <p>InN1ION "<lb /><lb />| Opini<lb /><lb />Things are<lb />looking up<lb /><lb />A positive outlook, for once<lb /><lb />JESSICA DUNLOW<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />You know, considering all of the stressful events<lb />that are just around the corner, Im not ticked off.<lb />Midterms, first rounds of exams, the hideous holiday<lb />of Valentines, depriving myself of two of my favorite<lb />things for Lent, the drama that always surrounds<lb />packs of girls and so many other things, for some<lb />reason, cannot break down my good mood.<lb /><lb />Maybe its the fact that its 80 degrees in Febru-<lb />ary; maybe its because the Patriots were taken off<lb />their high horse; maybe its because spring break<lb />is almost here; who knows, it may be because this<lb />semester seems to be going by so quickly. Regard-<lb />less, somehow, some way, Im actually positive.<lb /><lb />Since I have this overwhelming and disgusting<lb />happiness stuck in my system, I decided that it was<lb />time to spread the cheer, so to speak. So for the next<lb />couple of minutes, do not think about politics and the<lb />stresses of voting in the next election, do not take a<lb />glance at that long paper you haven't started that is<lb />due in a week; make a visit to your happy place.<lb /><lb />I maintain that everyones first happy place<lb />should be the Rec. Center. Considering endor-<lb />phins make you happy (and what is it that Elle<lb />_ Woods says in Legally Blonde? Exercise gives you<lb />.? endorphins, and endorphins make you happy, and<lb />. happy people just dont shoot their husbands.?),<lb />take that extra 30 minutes sometime today or<lb />tomorrow, and walk around the track a time or<lb />two. Give yourself some stress relief!<lb /><lb />Sit down and watch your favorite TV show for<lb />once, or play your favorite video game (I vote for<lb />Rock Band; that game is awesome!), spend more<lb />time with your friends and study together, cook<lb />dinner for yourself, spoil yourself for goodness<lb />sake! I know I sound completely redundant and you<lb />guys are probably all hitting yourselves in the head<lb />for reading my ridiculously positive opinion article.<lb />I just think we college kids do not get enough time<lb />to actually relax and enjoy ourselves.<lb /><lb />Adults and students who arent involved on<lb />campus would argue differently, but no, partying<lb />on the weekends does not count. When was the last<lb />time any of us actually sat down with the purpose of<lb />doing something solely for our own benefit? Rarely!<lb />We are too busy trying to please our professors,<lb />friends and campus organizations that we dont sit<lb />down and read a magazine or a novel that we want to.<lb />I'm not advocating abandoning school work, because<lb />that is just silly. I just think that we need to learn not<lb />to abandon ourselves. We can get what we want and<lb />achieve being happy if we just satisfy those cravings!<lb /><lb />Okay, Pll get off my happy train and admit<lb />that it will probably take less than 24 hours for<lb />me to crawl back into my pit of despair, sur-<lb />rounded by all those day-to-day problems. But<lb />you better believe that Ill be there at the Rec.<lb />running away my worries, taking 30 minutes<lb />to read my book and studying with friends.<lb />While it may not make me as happy as I am<lb />today, it certainly cannot be as bad as being<lb />depressed, overworked and stressed all of the time.<lb />So get happy, everyone ... it really isnt as bad<lb />as it seems. , }<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Every campus<lb />needs a coffee shop<lb /><lb />A change from the norm?<lb /><lb />LISA ENSMINGER<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Every campus needs a coffee shop in order to<lb />sit and chat with friends, enjoy some fresh bever-<lb />ages and food, a place to escape from the fast-paced<lb />streets and do some homework; or to experience<lb />a different atmosphere and a change of scenery.<lb />What can you not like about a local coffee shop<lb />designed with distinctiveness and personality?<lb /><lb />Coffee shops give the feeling of a chill and -<lb /><lb />relaxed atmosphere where you can escape from<lb />everything and enjoy a nice cup of hot (or even<lb />cold) java coffee with some friends. It is a place<lb />different from the norm while chains of restau-<lb />rants and stores have taken over America. Instead<lb />of going to the usual Starbucks located in every<lb />city (and even overseas), you can experience the<lb />individuality and uniqueness a city or town has to<lb />offer. I am not out to diss Starbucks or anything<lb />(I enjoy a cup of their specialty coffees, especially<lb />around Christmas time), but it is great to go<lb />somewhere new for a change and order a cup of<lb />coffee that you have never savored.<lb /><lb />I have to give props to Tipsy Teapot, the best<lb />local hang out in our little town of Greenville. It is<lb />not just a coffee shop; it also offers an assortment<lb />of teas, tasty entrées, and books. There is a sense of<lb />coolness and flexibility where you can do whatever<lb />you want in a neat atmosphere (and if you have never<lb />been there, I would highly recommend it).<lb /><lb />Every campus needs at least one place like this,<lb />if not many more, for college students to gather<lb />_ and hang out or get things done. It also helps to<lb />have a change in atmosphere from the dreadful,<lb /><lb />still-library scene on campus or the sameness of<lb /><lb />Barnes &amp; Noble, and Starbucks that you can expe-<lb />rience anywhere else in the United States.<lb /><lb />The uniqueness of the shops bring a sense of origi-<lb />nality to the campus life, and a place to do anything you<lb />need to get accomplished; whether it is cramming for<lb />that anatomy midterm or catching up with an old-time<lb />friend. You have a chance to escape somewhere different<lb />' and take a break from the monotony of our society.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />WWW. It'sanew semester,<lb /><lb />a clean slate. I always set out my new school clothes and<lb /><lb />pack my book bag up with all of my new school supplies<lb />the night before, making sure everything is ready for the<lb />first day. I know its nerdy, but its whatI do.<lb /><lb />I wake up early the day of, put on my brand-new<lb />clothes and make sure I leave early to get my Starbucks<lb />coffee. Even with all the things I like about the first day<lb />of school, there is one thing I hate about that numero uno<lb />day: the handing out of the syllabus.<lb /><lb />You know the story"the professor walks around the -<lb /><lb />room and hands you that thick (or thin) pack of paper, and<lb />you earnestly flip through the pages to see what's going<lb />to be required of you. As you scan how the teacher breaks<lb />down your grades, you reach the section of"cringe"the<lb />attendance policy. You hope that the professor gives more<lb /><lb />than.two excused absences, or better, has no attendance ©<lb /><lb />policy at all. But, in my experience, this is rarely the case.<lb />And I hate that.<lb /><lb />Why do professors have attendance policies?<lb /><lb />Isitreally necessary to make people come to class if they<lb />can make an A by skipping every day of the semester?<lb /><lb />These have been the questions that gnaw at me<lb />every time I step into a new classroom at the beginning<lb />of a new semester each year. It's always the same. The<lb />professor says, You cannot do well in this class if you miss<lb />too many days. And then he or she slaps this confining<lb />attendance policy on you that makes you want to skip the<lb />class even more.<lb /><lb />For me, classes that don't have a policy against being<lb /><lb />absent make me more motivated to attend. Ican remember<lb />this one class that I took that didnt have an attendance<lb /><lb />policy. That whole semester I only missed that class one<lb /><lb />time. Once. Now, all those other classes that I was forced to<lb />attend (in leu ofmy grade being docked), I probably missed<lb />the allotted amount of absences allowed. Ironic, huh?<lb />Maybe if professors gave students a little more slack in<lb />the absence area, they would attend more. We're paying<lb />for school anyway, and it would be stupid not to get good<lb /><lb />grades out of the classes we sign up for. But if we choose<lb /><lb />not to go, thats our choice. It shouldnt be mandated on us<lb />to have to go to class or our grade will be lowered.<lb /><lb />I mean, I have been in some classes where for every<lb />absence you have your grade is lowered by one letter<lb />grade. Get all As on everything else, but miss one day<lb />and it's over.<lb /><lb />What's even worse are those professors who not only<lb /><lb />_ have a policy against being absent, they have one about<lb /><lb />being tardy too.<lb /><lb />I was in a class a few semesters ago where for every<lb />time a student was five minutes late to class, the teacher<lb />took 1 percent off of their final grade. I thought that was<lb /><lb />completely bogus, and I found that if] was going to be late<lb /><lb />for that class, I wouldn't go at all.<lb /><lb />Honestly, what do attendance policies fa Tah<lb />anyway? I guarantee that if every professor on campus<lb />stopped making up these policies, they would start seeing the<lb />students who really want to be in class showing up. People<lb />like me. People who dont want to be punished for getting<lb />sick for a week or having a personal crisis come up.<lb /><lb />So I say ban the attendance policies. . .a lot of students<lb />will be grateful.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Kimberly Bellamy<lb />News Editor<lb /><lb />Ronnie Woodward<lb />Sports Editor<lb /><lb />Arianne Swanek<lb />Head Copy Editor<lb /><lb />Lizz Wells<lb />Photo Editor<lb /><lb />Stephanie Smith<lb />Production Manager<lb /><lb />Recycling saves<lb /><lb />Greenville doesnt care<lb /><lb />ALEX LAROCCA<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />I come from Wake County. When I used to<lb />live there; when I finished the ... lets say, milk<lb />. | would wash out the jug and throw it into a<lb />green bin. As many of you must know, this green<lb />bin was the recycling bin. Every household got<lb />one and every apartment complex got a recycling<lb />center. Everyone uses them. Why? Because its<lb />easy and it helps to reuse things.<lb /><lb />Yet, here in Greenville, we dont like recycling<lb />much. Yes, ECU has our recycling bins near<lb />the Port Cities and the 360s, but I dont live on<lb />campus. I live in an apartment, and I can tell you<lb />over the past year I have gone through a lot of<lb />milk, beer, orange juice and soda. Every time I<lb />am done with any of these things, I stare at them<lb />and wonder why I have to crush it and throw it<lb />into the trash.<lb /><lb />Would it be too much to ask for maybe just 10<lb />more hollow rectangles of plastic that hold recy-<lb />clable objects to be placed on campus? You know,<lb />they dont even have to get the big blue plastic<lb />ones. A cardboard box or even just a plastic bag<lb />would work. All it takes is that nice white recycle?<lb />symbol, and everyone knows whats going on.<lb /><lb />In a larger picture, it would be great to get a<lb />recycling dumpster at my apartment complex or<lb />even at every apartment complex. Who knows,<lb />maybe at every house! The City of Greenville<lb />could simply lie to us; I dont care. They could<lb />take all of our stuff and bury it in the middle of<lb />The Croatan. That part is not my responsibility.<lb />My responsibility is to recycle in general. If the<lb />school and the city make that almost impossible,<lb />then it is their responsibility. And, once again, if<lb />they decide to bury it in the woods, that is their<lb />business. ... all I ask for is a chance.<lb /><lb />I know that ECU technically has recycling,<lb />but if we take into consideration the advertise-<lb />ments that everyone dumps out onto the floor<lb /><lb />_when they pick up an issue of the TEC, which<lb /><lb />never get recycled, we are talking about quite a<lb />lot of paper. already. Now just imagine if there<lb />was a recycling bin right there, right next to the<lb />stand of newspapers! In all honesty, I got this<lb />idea from Bate. In Bate they have an assortment<lb />of recycling options, from newspaper to glass.<lb />Smashing? idea, except only Bate has it. What<lb /><lb />_ about the Brewster prison? Recycling isnt much<lb /><lb />of an option there.<lb /><lb />Of course this doesnt even compose of the<lb />entire city. Try and imagine the amount of beer<lb />cans that are used in a single week. We are talking<lb />about thousands of cans being smashed against<lb />thick skulls and discarded like cigarette butts.<lb />However, big the problem is for ECU, it has to<lb />be ~at least three times that for Greenville. So,<lb />would it really hurt? I dont know alot about<lb /><lb />financing a city, or a school or even if this stuff<lb /><lb />gets recycled (see above), but with the rest of the<lb />world getting a little eco-savvy, I dont think it<lb />would kill off eastern North Carolina if we got<lb />some green bins.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />).D. SPORTS EDITOR<lb /><lb />~Winning seems tofix everything,<lb />even when it comes to recruiting.<lb /><lb />Hot off its Hawaii Bowl victory<lb />oyer Boise State, ECU signed 18<lb />future Pirates on National Signing<lb />Day Wednesday. The class features<lb />11. members who are projected to<lb />play offense, while the remaining<lb />seven will play on the defensive sid<lb />of the ball. 3<lb /><lb />We're at a point where the<lb />emphasis has turned to increasing the<lb />bulk on our offensive and defensive<lb />lines,? Holtz said Wednesday. We<lb />need beef'in the program with pro-<lb /><lb />gram-type players who develop and =<lb /><lb />are here for the duration.<lb /><lb />It's a smaller class, but when you<lb />have the opportunity to redshirt 19<lb />players last year who were predomi-<lb />nately skill performers, our needs<lb />shift in this direction and we cant<lb />be any happier about this particular<lb />group of young men.?<lb /><lb />Holtz and his staff placed the<lb />emphasis once again on recruiting<lb />North Carolina heavily.<lb /><lb />_ Again we made our emphasis in<lb />the state of North Carolina,? Holtz<lb />said. Out of the 18 signed, 11 of them<lb /><lb />are from the state of North Carolina.<lb /><lb />There are three from the state of<lb />Florida, and then thereare four;<lb />one from Virginia, one from South<lb />Carolina, one from Georgia and one<lb />from Louisiana.?<lb /><lb />The focus of the class was bring-<lb />ing in offensive and defensive linemen<lb />to bring depth to those positions.<lb />Because of this, Holtz believes the<lb />class will probably be ignored on the<lb />national level. |<lb /><lb />It's probably hard to make a real<lb />national splash with this class because<lb />out of the 18 signing, nine of them<lb />are offensive and defensive linemen,?<lb />said Holtz. But I feel like those are<lb /><lb />the players we needed to bring in to<lb /><lb />continue to establish the program<lb />and where were trying to go with<lb />this thing right now.<lb /><lb />Somebody pointed out to me<lb /><lb />today; they went through some of<lb /><lb />these Web sites and started picking<lb />out players who were not very high<lb />stars in the recruiting tabloids from<lb /><lb />{ECUs Inside Source}<lb /><lb />ECU signs a ~program class<lb /><lb />THURSDAY FEBRUARY 7,2008 PAGE AZ<lb /><lb />ECUs 2008 RECRUITING CLASS<lb /><lb />osh Clink<lb /><lb />Dalton Faulds<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />aier<lb /><lb />Grant sal pet cat geen<lb /><lb />Wt.<lb /><lb />315<lb /><lb />Gastonia, N.C.<lb /><lb />265<lb /><lb />DSS?<lb /><lb />WR 6-0<lb /><lb />Hometown<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Wilmingto<lb /><lb />Vill<lb /><lb />Pt. The five other offensive line-<lb />men signed include C.J. <lb />THURSDAY FEBRUARY 7, 2008<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />Lacrosse loses<lb />season-opener<lb /><lb />Pirates will try to rebound against<lb />South Carolina<lb /><lb />HART HOLLOMAN<lb />STAFF WRIEER<lb /><lb />The ECU mens lacrosse team opened. its<lb />season this past weekend with a 16-10 loss at<lb />Coastal Carolina.<lb /><lb />The Pirates traveled to I Myrtle Beach on Sat-<lb /><lb />urday to take on the newly promoted Chanticleers.<lb />They are the newcomers in the Southeastern<lb />Lacrosse Conference's division IT.<lb /><lb />After going down 4-0 early in the first quar-<lb />ter, the Pirates were playing catch-up the rest of<lb />the game.<lb /><lb />Captain Michael Mendes knew that it would<lb />have been tough to pull out win after that. We<lb />dug ourselves in a hole early and before we knew<lb />it we couldn't get out,? Mendes said. We played<lb />really lackadaisical especially on defense and we<lb />gave them some easy one-on-one chances with<lb />the goalie and they converted.?<lb /><lb />After only one goal in the first Aaaties the<lb />Pirates picked up the offense in the second and<lb />put four past the coastal keeper. But it was on the<lb /><lb />defensive end again where the Pirates broke down -<lb /><lb />and they went into the half trailing by four.<lb /><lb />Coastal again came out firing to start the<lb />second half, and with four goals in the third<lb />quarter to the Pirates two, the Chanticleers took<lb />a six-goal lead which they would retain until<lb />the final whistle. The final score read 16-10 as<lb />Coastal celebrated adding another victory to its<lb />2-0 start.<lb /><lb />The Pirates were stifled by the Coastal keeper<lb />as he managed 21 saves despite the Pirates playing<lb />13 minutes (almost a whole quarter) of an extra<lb />man offense due to Coastal penalties.<lb /><lb />We came out really flat and just playing<lb />sloppy, said Mendez. We made a lot of mistakes<lb /><lb />and they were able to capitalize. We had a lot of<lb /><lb />man-up opportunities and we didnt take advan-<lb />tage of those which always hurts you.?<lb /><lb />One good thing that came out of the game was<lb />the emergence of some of the young players on the<lb />squad. Team president, Chase Collins, noted that<lb />the future looked bright with some of the young<lb />talent the team possessed.<lb /><lb />Some of the younger guys played well this<lb />weekend,? Collins said. I think thats a good sign<lb />for the future and for the rest of the season. As<lb />they start to play more and get used to the speed<lb /><lb />of the game they can only get better.?<lb /><lb />And without a whole lot of upperclassmen, it<lb />will be up to the youth to step in a eo a lot<lb /><lb />of minutes.<lb /><lb />Returning to the team is the Pirates leading<lb />scorer from last year, senior Patrick Geraghty.<lb />The team will look to him to carry the offensive<lb />load and lead the attack line with fellow senior<lb />Wade Nevitt. |<lb /><lb />The midfield is the most experienced group,<lb />led by Kyle Casey and Lees-McRae transfer face-<lb />off specialist, Chevy Peake.<lb /><lb />The Pirate defense looks to have trouble pro-<lb />tecting Mendes this season. The young group<lb />led by Collins will have to get it together for the<lb />Pirates to have any success this season; and with<lb />16 goals given up in their first game, they need<lb />to do it quickly.<lb /><lb />Especially with SELC north division rivals<lb />South Carolina coming to town this weekend.<lb /><lb />We just need to pick it up and work on some<lb />things,? Mendes said. Were trying to get these<lb />new guys in there and the team as a whole, ready<lb />to play for South Carolina. Division opponents<lb />are crucial and we're trying to make it to the<lb />[conference] playoffs in Atlanta.?<lb /><lb />The Pirates take on the Gamecocks Saturday<lb />at the Blount-Intramural fields at 3 p.m.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted, at :<lb />_ sports@theeastcarolinian. com<lb /><lb />PN od od Gad ©) DYN Gi i @) 2010) oo<lb /><lb />PAGE A8<lb /><lb />OUR PULSE<lb />IS RACING,<lb /><lb />IS YOURS?<lb /><lb />ON STANDS<lb />FEB. 20TH!<lb /><lb />STARTING SUMMER 2008<lb /><lb />Wielelel-talerell<lb />Spee lerslale<lb />Center<lb /><lb />WWW.ECU.EDU/NEWMSC<lb /><lb />09<lb /><lb /></p>

Other than<lb /><lb />that it was a really competitive<lb /><lb />game.? ;<lb /><lb />ECU came out more than<lb />motivated against its old Blue<lb />Ridge Hockey Conference<lb />rivals, ASU. The Mountaineers<lb />wanted this game desperately<lb />and had been hyping up the<lb />revenge factor? all week on<lb />their team Web site.<lb /><lb />The Pirates buried ASU early<lb />with seven first period goals. Two<lb /><lb />_ back-to-back goals by the Moun-<lb /><lb />taineers, briefly postponed ASU's<lb />fate, but ECU countered with a<lb />staggering 10 consecutive goals<lb />to end the game.<lb /><lb />Six different Pirates scored<lb />at least two goals and 11 total<lb />players tallied scores.<lb /><lb />They had a lot of trash<lb />talking on their Web site about<lb />how they wanted to beat us,?<lb />said Lang. We went in there<lb />with a whole new attitude to<lb />try and pretty much decimate<lb />them.?<lb /><lb />ECUs penalty problems on<lb />the ice have been no secret"but<lb />penalties off the ice contributed<lb />to the Pirates descent from the<lb />ACHA South Top 10. A mis-<lb /><lb />interpretation of an academic<lb /><lb />ineligibility rule caused the<lb />Pirates to forfeit all four of this<lb />semester's wins.<lb /><lb />Subsequently, the rankings<lb />committee deemed that ECU's<lb />first semester wins -were not<lb />enough to keep the Pirates in<lb />the Top 10.<lb /><lb />Tennessee, which suffered<lb />a similar ineligibility pen-<lb />alty, was fortunate enough not<lb />to slip very far in the rank-<lb />ings. Georgia Tech, a team<lb />the Pirates defeated twice this<lb />season (1-11-08 game forfeited),<lb />grabbed the No. 10 spot. More<lb />importantly, the fall also means<lb />ECU will not be participating<lb /><lb />in this years South Regional<lb /><lb />~Tournament.<lb /><lb />I think over the summer,<lb />as a team, we'll bond more,<lb />Konchalski said of the disap-<lb />pointment. McCarthy said.<lb />They were short on scholarship<lb />players and I thought we could<lb />wear them down. if we pressed<lb /><lb />and.tans 27.<lb /><lb />As the case with most of ECUs<lb />wins this year, Sam Hinnant and<lb />James Legan lit up the scoreboard<lb />via the three-point line.<lb /><lb />All 15 of Hinnants points<lb /><lb />came from behind the arc, as the<lb /><lb />sharp-shooting junior hit five of<lb />his eight three-point attempts,<lb /><lb />The nights that Sam [Hin-<lb />nant] and/or James [Legan] make<lb />shots, were usually pretty good<lb />and that proved to be true again<lb />tonight,? said McCarthy.<lb /><lb />Facing a 10-8 deficit early<lb />in the game, Legan sparked the<lb />crucial 19-4 run midway through<lb />the first half that put the Pirates<lb />up for good. Legan finished with<lb />a game-high 17 points.<lb /><lb />T felt like we had a letdown<lb />early in the first half and never<lb />really recovered,? Rice coach<lb />Willis Wilson said. The Pirates<lb />smelled an opportunity to seize<lb />the moment and they did just<lb />that. Their confidence then grow<lb /><lb />over the course of the game, and<lb /><lb />ours didnt.?<lb /><lb />As a team, ECU went 9-of-<lb />25 from the three-point line. The<lb />Pirates are now 7-1 in games<lb />when they hit eight or more<lb />three-pointers.<lb /><lb />They [Rice] are réally big<lb /><lb />Cory Farmer and Gabe Blair both helped ECU snap its four-game losing steak with a much-needed win.<lb /><lb />inside and they were giving us<lb />open looks from the outside,?<lb />said Legan, who knocked down<lb />three three-pointers in the vic-<lb />tory. Our big men were setting<lb />screens for us and giving us open<lb />shots. I think the big thing was<lb />just getting those open looks.?<lb /><lb />Defensively, ECU held Rice<lb />to just 28.8 percent shooting<lb />from the field.<lb /><lb />ECU hadnt won a confer-<lb />ence game since its 75-62 vic-<lb />tory over Marshall on Jan. 16.<lb /><lb />The biggest story about<lb />tonight is they [ECU players] did<lb />get some reward, McCarthy said.<lb />The last four games have been<lb />very frustrating...and its hard<lb />to ask to give effort and sacrifice<lb />without getting some reward, so<lb />tonight was really big.?<lb /><lb />Rice (3-18, 0-8 C-USA) won<lb />last years meeting at Minges<lb />Coliseum, 83-74. <lb />THURSDAY FEBRUARY 7, 2008<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ FEATURES<lb /><lb />Presidential hopefuls<lb />rally for states<lb /><lb />ELISE PHILLIPS<lb />FEATURES EDITOR<lb /><lb />Feb. 5 marked Super Tuesday in this election<lb />year, as presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton,<lb />Barack Obama, Mitt Romney, John McCain and<lb />Mike Huckabee fought for the votes of each state<lb />in the U.S.<lb /><lb />Millions of Americans across 24 states and<lb />American Samoa held either caucuses or primary<lb />elections on Tuesday, the largest number of<lb />simultaneous primary elections ever.<lb /><lb />Caucuses are preliminary elections where<lb />members of each political party nominate who<lb />they want to run in a political race. A primary<lb />is an event where voters cast their ballot for a<lb />particular candidate.<lb /><lb />Super Tuesday both shocked and confirmed<lb />expectations for each of the presidential candi-<lb />dates and the nation.<lb /><lb />On the Democratic side, Clinton won the<lb />much-desired state of California, while Obama<lb />bagged Georgia, Alabama and his home state of<lb />Illinois. Still, Obama won 13 states compared<lb />to Clintons eight. However, Clinton led in the<lb />number of delegates that supported her, she<lb />received 582 of the 1,681 delegates, compared<lb />to Obamas 562. (Delegates are members of the<lb />House of Representatives who represent their<lb />state and cast their votes for presidency during<lb />an election year.)<lb /><lb />The fact that weve made so much progress, I<lb />think indicates that we've got the right message,<lb />and the question is are we going to be able to pull<lb />some states out,? Obama told NBC.<lb /><lb />For the Republicans, McCain pocketed nine<lb />states, including California, Arizona, New York<lb />and Oklahoma, while Romney came out on top<lb />of seven states, including Colorado, Minnesota<lb />and Alaska. Huckabee won only five states:<lb />Arkansas, West Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee<lb />and Alabama. McCain received the support of<lb />331 delegates, leading Romney with 129 and<lb />Huckabee with 69. )<lb /><lb />Although Ive never minded the role of the<lb />underdog and have relished as much as anyone<lb />come-from-behind wins, tonight I think we must<lb />get used to the idea that we are the Republican<lb />Party front-runner, McCain said Tuesday night<lb />in his home state of Arizona, according to a<lb />report by CNN.<lb /><lb />With the nation divided down party lines,<lb />the outcome of the 2008 presidential election is<lb />still too close to tell.<lb /><lb />It [Super Tuesday] went well for both<lb />parties, although for Republicans it gave John<lb />McCain a definite front runner status due to<lb />the winner take all states in the Republican<lb />primaries. This is unfortunate for some states<lb />like North Carolina who dont get to vote until<lb />May 6, although it might prove crucial for Demo-<lb />crats,? said Dustin Robinson, the president of the<lb />ECU College Republicans.<lb /><lb />With the North Carolina primary approach-<lb />ing in May, voters should review the platforms<lb />of all presidential hopefuls.
