<p>In1oNn "<lb /><lb />| Opini<lb /><lb />Apathy epidemic or<lb />perpetuated myth?<lb />Let us take a look |<lb /><lb />-YAZID FINN<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />This weekTs premise is a topic brought up in a<lb /><lb />recent conversation I had with~another SGA-involved<lb />individual. Does this school really have a problem<lb /><lb />with apathy or is it just an additional generalization<lb />similar to our party school reputation? Sure we<lb /><lb />throw double-keg parties in what once was a Church<lb /><lb />of Scientology, but really, now, this is hardly different<lb />_ from any campus-with creative students.<lb /><lb />So the question remains: are students apa-<lb />_ thetic in regards to what happens here at ECU, or<lb />is it that they know they cannot make a difference<lb />and simply stand down?<lb /><lb />Sure every person may. have a bout of indif-<lb />ference towards events in their life from time to<lb />time, but the myth is that ECU is blanketed in<lb />this state of uncaring. Evidence for this concept<lb />is lacking in my mind, as heated interest towards<lb />the recent subject of hard waiver insurance should<lb />show what student outcry can accomplish.<lb /><lb />Many will admit they were skeptical at first<lb />with the idea of student forums to discuss the<lb />insurance plan. They, like I, believed the process<lb />would be quick and painless and that the system<lb />would be implemented over night, while most lay<lb /><lb />passed out comfortably in their beds or as close .<lb /><lb />to their beds as drunkenly possible.<lb /><lb />As fate would have it, the insurance plan was<lb />tabled and will continue to be discussed and inves-<lb />tigated until an unaddressed future date. Score<lb />one for students, no? If apathy is not the issue<lb />then it must be the latter, as previously mentioned,<lb />which I am much more inclined to believe.<lb /><lb />Students may look at the SGA and shake their<lb />heads, knowing their odds are something even Chris-<lb />topher Walken in The Deer Hunter would not wager<lb />on. However, while a shot at the top is out of the<lb />question for most, there are other ways to work the<lb />system. At least start by getting your foot in the door,<lb />and you would be surprised at how quickly options<lb />present themselves for you to make a difference.<lb /><lb />I will be frank with you guys when I say I am some-<lb />times scared of what goes on around this school. When<lb />it comes to SGA politics at times, I begin to wonder if<lb />Richard Nixon was buried beneath Mendenhall. ~Take<lb />the spring elections. Just the other day, I was speculat-<lb /><lb />ing who would be running the tickets in creation, only "<lb /><lb />to find out, like an episode of 24, that the supposed<lb />antagonist of this act was merely a puppet. -<lb /><lb />Can you guess who the real mastermind<lb />may be? Sorry, but you will have to tune in next<lb />week for the next exciting episode. 12:59:57 ...<lb />12:59:53 ... 19:59:59 4 1:00:00.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Share the road<lb /><lb />Not Ten points for students<lb /><lb />LARA OLIVER<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />I drive my car very rarely, usually just to take a<lb /><lb />trip to Raleigh or across town to get groceries that.<lb />I can't get nearby. So itTs no surprise that I usually.<lb /><lb />get around town on the bus, riding my bike or, my<lb />_ personal favorite, walking. What is surprising is how<lb />difficult it is to remain alive and uninjured in this town<lb />if youre someone who doesnTt enjoy driving that much.<lb />At every stop sign " at which pedestrians have the<lb />right of way " I have to either jog quickly across or<lb />wait until there are no cars. I have to take those precau-<lb />tions because if I don't, I might find myself squashed<lb />under the Jeep ofa girl on her cell phone, or the Civic<lb />ofa boy trying to get wherever heTs heading so quickly<lb />that pedestrians become an inconvenience.<lb /><lb />Riding my bike isnTt much easier. ITve almost been<lb /><lb />clipped in my own neighborhood by numerous cars going. -<lb /><lb />about 50 mph in a 25 mph zone. Downtown, I usually<lb />have to end up stopping when I have the right of way, so I<lb />don't get hit by a car thatTs California stopping at a stop<lb />sign. By the time I get home, my nerves are so rattled by<lb />near-death experiences that the idea of taking my dog for<lb />a relaxing walk scares the crap out of me.<lb /><lb />When I heard about the supposed terrorist who<lb />tried to take out a group of students on the UNC-<lb />CH campus, I was surprised most of them weren't<lb />accustomed to having to dodge cars in college life,<lb />but apparently most campuses arenTt like ours.<lb />When visiting Boston, I was amazed at how slowly<lb />cars went in pedestrian areas, and they stopped and<lb />let people pass by! They didnTt even shout at them;<lb />it was amazing. On Hillsborough Street (next to<lb />NCSU), I found the act of crossing the street very<lb />enjoyable. Not only was I not the only pedestrian,<lb />but I also didnTt have to worry about cars turning<lb />right on the red light and hitting me.<lb /><lb />So why is it that our campus is so pedestrian<lb />un-friendly? My sister warned me when I got<lb />here about how many students are hit either while<lb />walking across Fifth or Tenth Street, or riding<lb /><lb />their bikes. The walk sign at many intersections.<lb /><lb />is a Joke since cars can still turn right on red, often<lb />without checking to see if people are walking across<lb />the street. I always thought that college campuses<lb />were designed with walking or riding your bike in<lb />mind, but it seems most of the students here would<lb />rather commit vehicular homicide than deign to<lb />travel on the bus or (gasp!) walk to class.<lb /><lb />How about instead of driving to class and then<lb />spending an hour running on a treadmill at the<lb /><lb />gym, more students just walk to class? ItTs a great.<lb /><lb />way to save time and money " maybe even the<lb />environment, if you care about that kind of thing<lb />""and it helps you clear your head before class. We<lb />all know how stressful it is ~trying to find a parking<lb />spot near campus, so why not take a bus? I actually planned to spend my<lb />day with some friends at Tie Breakers, where the<lb />number of TVs makes it impossible not to have a<lb />clear view of the action, no matter in which direc-<lb />tion your head is turned.<lb /><lb />With the first round of drinks on the table,<lb /><lb />and appetizers on their way, the Giants were<lb />set to receive the opening kickoff. The first of<lb />many problems began here. Coverage cut out<lb />and everyone missed the GiantsT run back. Not<lb />to worry, I thought, FOX has had some technical<lb />problems all year. _<lb /><lb />After the first round of commercials, I was<lb />really getting into the Super Bowl spirit. Then<lb />problems with coverage got worse. It seemed like<lb />every couple of minutes or so, the TVs froze or<lb />completely went blank. These moments of silence<lb />left plenty of room for people to yell out obsceni-<lb />ties or seemingly helpless advice to their teams.<lb /><lb />By the end of the first half, my friends and I<lb />decided to head home and hope for the best there.<lb />Imagine our surprise when we arrived and Tom<lb />PettyTs face was frozen on the screen. After several<lb />minutes, the screen went black. I called my par-<lb />ents in Maryland to see if the technical problems<lb />persisted up there. No. They had perfect coverage.<lb />Luckily, they filled me in on what we missed.<lb /><lb />Almost the entire third quarter went by with<lb /><lb />_ nothing but a blank screen. However, in the fourth<lb /><lb />quarter, things seemed to be looking better. That<lb />is, we could actually see the game, and the team<lb />I picked led an amazing last minute drive to the<lb />end zone to beat the Patriots in the a Super<lb /><lb />_ Bowl upset to date.<lb /><lb />When you think about how much money is<lb />spent on the Super Bowl " millions of dollars<lb />in commercials alone " it seems absolutely<lb />ludicrous that a cable company cannot manage to<lb />deliver it in perfection. Were there too many of us<lb />tuning in? What caused this mega-sized blunder<lb />to take place? Have we gotten too technologically<lb />advanced that we cannot control the systems we<lb />have? I guess we'll just have to check out the<lb />highlights and replays on ESPN and hope they<lb />figure it out before Super Bow] XLIII.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at "<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian. com<lb /><lb />cane<lb /><lb />I'd like to make a toast! LEWIS<lb />OPINION EDITOR<lb /><lb />I woke up early Sunday morning with the sun<lb />streaming directly into my eyes through a tiny<lb />crack in the blinds, and to the sound of my wife<lb />sawing logs in her sleep. A narcoleptic would have<lb /><lb />trouble going back to sleep under those condi- |<lb /><lb />tions, so I decided to get up and start editing the<lb /><lb />- Pirate Rants for todayTs edition.<lb /><lb />Pirate Rants are one of the most fun things<lb /><lb />about my job, but also the most difficult. From |<lb />one issue to the next, we receive anywhere from<lb /><lb />150 to 200 rants, and sometimes more. Obviously,<lb />they canTt all make it into the paper. The hard part<lb />is to decide which ones to keep because there are<lb /><lb />alot of real gems in the inbox.<lb /><lb />I always have 10 or 20 I'll share with my wife if<lb />sheTs in the room, and sheTll often ask me what ITm<lb /><lb />laughing at. I sure wish there was room in the paper<lb /><lb />to print all of the rants ... well, most of them.<lb /><lb />For all the wonderful, hilarious rants, there<lb />are a few that just donTt cut the mustard. Every<lb />once in a while, a personal attack on a member<lb />of the newspaper staff is snuck into the rants by<lb />someone who doesnTt agree with something that<lb />person wrote. Such rants are a waste of the writerTs<lb />time and, more importantly, my own because they<lb />won't see the light of day. Legitimate concerns<lb />should be addressed in a letter to the editor with<lb />your name and contact information. A good rule<lb /><lb />Personal attacks that name ECU faculty, staff<lb /><lb />and fellow students also fail to make the cut. How-<lb />ever, in the case of a particularly good rant, such<lb />as the one last week about the professor refusing<lb />to allow the class to record lectures, I just omit the<lb />name. Go, thou, and do likewise, and you can rant<lb />all you want!<lb /><lb />- Profanity, unfortunately. disqualifies a lot of per-<lb />feetty funny rants. An occasional damn or hell is one<lb />thing, but S and F bombs, for obvious reasons,<lb />are generally brushed aside. Sometimes the offending<lb />word can be substituted with something else, but letTs<lb />face it, crap and freakin somehow lack the neces-<lb />sary punch that the writer was going for. ,<lb /><lb />~ Sunday, as I sifted through the Pirate Rants, I<lb /><lb />decided to use some of the rants submitted last week<lb /><lb />that didnTt make it into the paper. I know a lot of rants<lb />were submitted after Thursday's edition, but-in the<lb />spirit of fairness, I felt I owed it to some of the over-<lb />looked writers who were disappointed last week. You<lb />might say thatTs not fair to the ones who submitted<lb />rants after Thursday, and you'd be right. But life isn't<lb />always fair, and I only have so much space to work<lb />with. So many rants, so little space. You folks are too<lb />witty for your own good sometimes!<lb /><lb />_ By and large Pirate Rants are a lot of fun and<lb /><lb />_I know they are the first thing most people read<lb /><lb />when they pick up this newspaper. Again, I am<lb />sorry that we cannot print them all; no matter how<lb />much I'd love to, but keep Tem coming. On Saul WilliamTs newest<lb />release, The Inevitable Rise and<lb />Liberation of NiggyTardust, he<lb />manages to walk the fine line<lb />between true Hip-Hop inge-<lb />nuity and his own rebelious,<lb />poetic personality.<lb /><lb />On Nov. 1, Williams<lb />released his new album exclu-<lb />sively online. He managed to<lb />completely circumvent the<lb />use of any major label for<lb />distribution by releasing his<lb />album online. Anyone can go<lb /><lb />~to the official Saul Williams<lb />Web site and download. the<lb />new ablum for free, or they<lb /><lb />can give a possible $5 dona- _<lb /><lb />tion to the artist.<lb /><lb />Saul Williams is a poet,<lb />musician and actor from<lb />Newburgh, N.Y., who cre-<lb />ates poetry and music that<lb />can not only move you but<lb />perplex you at the same<lb />time. Williams graduated<lb />from college with both a<lb />bachelorTs degree in philoso-<lb />phy and a masterTs in acting.<lb /><lb />He is no stranger to the<lb />analytical world. In the mid-<lb />nineties, Williams estab-<lb />lished himself as a prominent<lb />poet in open mic cafes and<lb />poetry clubs in New York City,<lb />and eventually won the the<lb />title of the Nuyorican Poets<lb />CaféTs Grand Slam Champion.<lb />Throughout WilliamsT career<lb />he has been portrayed as one<lb />of the few remaining Hip-<lb />Hop artists, one with social<lb />awareness and an apparent<lb />abhorrence for the commeri-<lb />calism of modern mainstream<lb />Hip-Hop.<lb /><lb />_ During this time, Wil-<lb />liamsT intelligent wordplay<lb />and creative rhyme scheme<lb /><lb />style caught the attention of |<lb /><lb />Hip-hop takes<lb /><lb />on a new form<lb /><lb />such Hip-Hop proliferates as<lb />KRS-One, De La Soul and the<lb />Fugees. Williams went on to<lb />release a string of EPs before<lb />releasing his first major label full<lb />length album produced by Rick<lb />Rubin, called Amethyst Rock Star.<lb /><lb />Since then, Williams has<lb />released several other criti-<lb />cally acclaimed EPs and full-<lb />length albums. Recently, Wil-<lb />liams captured the attention<lb />of another musical obscurity<lb />and brain behind Nine Inch<lb />Nails: mastermind Trent<lb />Reznor.<lb /><lb />Reznor was recently<lb />accompanied by Williams as<lb />his supporting act on tour in<lb />support of both of the new<lb />Nine Inch NailTs albums, |<lb />With Teeth and Year Zero. It -<lb />was during this tour that the<lb />idea of making music with<lb />Williams peaked ReznorTs<lb />interest. The result was the<lb />abstractly serene The Inevi-<lb />table Rise and Liberation of<lb /><lb />NiggyTardust, with its obvious<lb /><lb />wordplay on the groundbreak-<lb />ing David Bowie album,<lb /><lb />_ The Rise and Fall of Ziggy<lb />Stardust and Spiders from Mars.<lb />Unlike BowieTs album, how-<lb />ever, there is no true under-<lb />lying concept or theme to<lb />WilliamsT album; just raw<lb />and unadulterated lyricism<lb />intertwined with the crunchy,<lb />industrial sounding beats of<lb />Reznor.<lb /><lb />WilliamsT new album is<lb />truly revolutionary in every<lb />sense of the word and repre-<lb />sents underground Hip-Hop<lb />in an extremely entertain-<lb />ing fashion. Every song is<lb />decorated with unmatched<lb />wordplay and smart, social<lb />and political lyrics. If you're<lb />on the search for newer and<lb />riskier music, this is the album<lb />for you. The Inevitable Rise and<lb />Liberation of NiggyTardust is<lb />an album with a serious tinge<lb />of experimentation and insur-<lb />mountable talent, to create an<lb />eerie Hip-Hop collaboration to<lb />bob your head to.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />Sports<lb /><lb />Rugby team takes huge step toward nationals<lb /><lb />{ECU's Inside Source}<lb /><lb />TUESDAY FEBRUARY 5, 2008 PAGE A&amp;<lb /><lb />The ECU rugby team fell just short of going to nationals last season, but the 15th-ranked Pirates hope to make it this year.<lb /><lb />Photo by Jessi Braxton<lb /><lb />Pirates defeat<lb />NC State<lb /><lb />HART HOLLOMAN<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The ECU rugby team<lb />defeated archrival NC State on<lb />Saturday, 43-32, in a thrilling<lb />match that saw a strong second<lb />half comeback by State, that came<lb />up short, just as the Pirates were<lb />able to hold on for the win.<lb /><lb />In a match that saw the No.<lb />15 ranked Pirates (1-0) Jump<lb />out to a 37-10 halftime lead,<lb />State managed to put together a<lb />second half push, that gave the<lb />Pirate faithful a bit of a scare<lb />as the match wound down. But<lb />the expert kick of former ECU<lb />football place-kicker Robert<lb />Lee, proved to be the difference<lb />between the sides in the end.<lb /><lb />The Pirates took the early<lb />initiative and within minutes held<lb />a 17-0 lead. They seemed unstop-<lb />pable as they kept sending the ball<lb />out to their wing players to capital-<lb />ize on their speed advantage.<lb /><lb />We did a good job of get-<lb />ting the ball out to our backs;<lb />said senior Thomas Francisco.<lb />Our team is smaller but a lat<lb />faster than other teams, so we<lb />kept swinging it out to. our out<lb />backs and running trick plays<lb />and it worked. |<lb /><lb />Four different Pirates scored<lb />a try in the first half. Hose is the leader of a young ECU pitching staff heading into the 2008 season.<lb /><lb />Explosive offense returns to softball team<lb /><lb />Season set to open<lb />this weekend<lb /><lb />4<lb /><lb /> _§ID"In 2007, the ECU<lb />softball team put-its potent<lb />offense on display, outscoring its<lb />opponents 271-129 on its way to<lb />a 40-20 record. However, it was<lb />just two runs that separated the<lb />Pirates from their first NCAA<lb />regional berth since 1999, as<lb />they fell in a tight 1-0 contest<lb />against top-seeded Houston in<lb />the Conference USA ~Tourna-<lb />ment title game.<lb /><lb />With eight starters and 15<lb />letterwinners returning from<lb />that squad, East Carolina feels<lb />optimistic about earning that<lb />coveted bid.<lb /><lb />Our student-athletes have<lb />committed themselves this fall to<lb />build upon their strength, speed,<lb />and softball skills, said ECU<lb />coach Tracey Kee. They are a<lb />very driven group, and have met<lb />every challenge placed before<lb />them head on. With our blend<lb /><lb />of youth and experience, we hope<lb />our hard work will directly result<lb />in success on the field.<lb /><lb />After finishing second in<lb />both the regular season and<lb />tournament a year ago, the<lb />Pirates are expected to do as<lb />well this season, according to the<lb />leagueTs head coaches. The team<lb />finished with 14 league wins, the<lb />second-most in ECU's seven sea-<lb />sons as a member of C-USA.<lb /><lb />A key reason for those expec-<lb />tations is the work of Kee, who<lb />enters her 12th season with<lb />ECU just three wins away from<lb />500. However, her impact on<lb />the program began much earlier<lb />than 1996. In December, CSTV<lb />listed the Pirates as having 967<lb />wins in just 22 seasons, the<lb />eighth-most in NCAA history.<lb />Kee has been part of 843 of those<lb />wins as a player, assistant and<lb />head coach.<lb /><lb />Kee has plenty of help in the<lb />dugout as associate head coach<lb /><lb />Natalie Kozlowski returns for<lb />her eighth season with the.<lb /><lb />?<lb /><lb />program and first-year student<lb />assistant coach Keli Harrell<lb />joins the staff after an illustri-<lb />ous career in the Pirate uniform.<lb />Kozlowski is a proven offensive<lb /><lb />guru as her squads dominate the<lb /><lb />record books. She is responsible<lb />for teams that ranked first or<lb />second in 10-of-11 categories.<lb />After guiding the Pirates to a<lb />record 57 home runs in 2006,<lb /><lb />her 2007 team did one better,.<lb /><lb />belting 58. Harrell will undoubt-<lb />edly prove invaluable to East<lb />Carolina's pitching staff as she<lb />holds the all-time C-USA strike-<lb />out record with 943. She also<lb />sits first in C-USA appearances<lb />while appearing second in wins,<lb />saves and innings pitched.<lb /><lb />If the Pirates are to contend<lb />for their first C-USA title and first<lb />conference championship since<lb />winning three consecutive Big<lb />South titles from 1997-99, they<lb />will have to rely on their consistent<lb />defensive play. ECU was by far the<lb /><lb />best defensive club in C-USA last<lb /><lb />season, compiling a fielding per-<lb /><lb />centage of .977. Additionally, that<lb />mark was tied for the second-best<lb />in the nation along with national<lb />champion Arizona.<lb /><lb />The Pirates return their<lb />entire infield from a year ago,<lb />highlighted by C-USA pre-<lb />season honoree Jessica Johnson.<lb />The junior first baseman and<lb />C-USA first-team member led<lb />ECU and C-USA with 17 home<lb />runs in. 2007, the second-highest<lb />total in school history.<lb /><lb />Jessica Johnson truly estab-<lb />lished herself as a threat with the<lb />bat last season, Kee stated. She<lb />is by far one of the most consis-<lb />tent first basemen in the league.<lb />SheTs a quiet leader, who opts to<lb />let her game speak for itself. Our<lb />squad will depend heavily on her<lb />skill set this season.<lb /><lb />East Carolina enters 2008<lb /><lb />with depth in the outfield,<lb /><lb />returning six strong ath-<lb />letes. Sophomore and C-USA<lb />preseason selection Charina<lb />Sumner, along with junior Sarah<lb />Bibee will roam the right side.<lb /><lb />Sumner, a Kailua, Hawai'i native,<lb />turned in a strong rookie cam-<lb />paign, earning second-team All<lb />C-USA honors as well as All-<lb />Freshman and All-Tournament<lb />accolades. She led the team in<lb />numerous categories, including<lb />runs, hits, triples, stolen bases,<lb />plate appearances, at bats, starts<lb />and games played.<lb /><lb />While it will likely prove dif-<lb />ficult to fill the void in the circle<lb />left by Harrell, the Pirates have a ~<lb />stable of pitchers ready to prove<lb />themselves among C-USA'~s best.<lb />Sophomore Toni Paisley anchors<lb />the staff, having been named<lb />C-USA Freshman-of-the-Year<lb />in 2007. She racked up a 21-5<lb />record on her way to earning<lb />second-team All C-USA honors,<lb />All-Freshman and All-Tourna-<lb />ment accolades and North Caro-<lb />lina Collegiate Sports Informa-<lb /><lb />tion Association (NCCSIA)<lb />_ All-State recognition.<lb /><lb />Our staff has spent a lot of<lb /><lb />see SOFTBALL page A10<lb /><lb /></p>
