Our growth<lb />is also illustrative of our historical commitment<lb />to access and opportunity,? Ballard continued.<lb /><lb />In order to begin strategically planning for<lb />the increased enrollment, a task force has been put<lb />together as a method to develop goals and plans in<lb />order to facilitate the growing student body.<lb /><lb />The primary goal of the task force will be to<lb />figure out means to accommodate the growing<lb />student population, while still maintaining the<lb />same level of excellence. 7<lb /><lb />This is an appropriate time to take a close<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN * NEWS<lb /><lb />look and make sure that our growth is focused<lb />in a way that ensures that we are maintaining<lb />access and properly serving the people of North<lb />Carolina,? Tutorials, study skills and time<lb />management sessions will be offered with the<lb />addition of a student-learning center.<lb /><lb />The task force must take the lead in helping<lb />us decide such critical questions as how large our<lb />student body should be and what are the proper<lb />ratios of undergraduate to graduate students<lb />and on-campus students to distance-education<lb />students,? Ballard said.<lb /><lb />Judi Bailey, former president of Western<lb />Michigan University and Northern Michigan<lb />University, will head up the task force.<lb /><lb />Bailey is currently in charge of oversee-<lb />ing enrollment management enterprise, which<lb />includes the admissions, financial aid and<lb />registrar's office.<lb /><lb />The first meeting of the task force will be held<lb />in February. We got one from everybody! Talk about a<lb />self-esteem booster. It was not long after this,<lb />however, that Valentines Day lost its sparkle.<lb />I am not sure what happened exactly. Maybe<lb />it was the fact that your worst enemy was<lb />forced to give you a Disney Valentine. On<lb />the other hand, maybe it was because you<lb />were little and you hated the taste of those<lb />stupid candy hearts with sayings on them.<lb />Today, there are entire Web sites (www.antivday.<lb />com) and products devoted to celebrating the<lb />hopeful demise of a somewhat hated holiday.<lb /><lb />Katie Woerdeman, a senior at ECU, shares<lb />my sentiments: Happy Valentines Day, no one<lb />loves you, youre single and life sucks!?<lb /><lb />Exactly. Why must culture do this to us? I truly<lb />dislike you Valentines fanatics because why love?<lb /><lb />your significant other only one daya year? Hmmm?<lb /><lb />We should celebrate the love we have for a person<lb />every single day of the year, not just one random<lb />day in the shortest month of the year, because<lb />when you think about it, have you ever actually<lb />had that perfect Valentines Day? I know many<lb />men and women who are chronically let down<lb />by not getting that ideal gift or not hearing the<lb />romantic words.<lb /><lb />I am Just convinced that if you truly love some- °<lb /><lb />one, you would celebrate it every day. Little roman-<lb />tic surprises and loving acts should be done every-<lb />day. Yes, this seems like a lot to ask, but come on.<lb />If you love someone enough, it would be worth it.<lb />I firmly believe that the only people you can<lb />truly rely on for Valentines are your parents.<lb />They always have something up their sleeve<lb />to make you feel loved when no one else takes<lb />time to. Diamond necklaces, Reeses Cup<lb />hearts and things of that nature, I love it.<lb />Celebrate this most unholy day, if you must, and<lb />at least try to do it right. When you think about<lb />it? No flowers, please. Flowers wilt and die, and<lb />yeah, most people are somewhat allergic to some<lb />flower or another. |<lb />~Chocolate just makes us fat, and as much<lb /><lb />as we lrke it, please do not give us some-<lb /><lb />thing that will just serve to give us cavities.<lb />My boyfriend is convinced that Valentines Day is<lb />a good excuse? to spoil me. While I love being<lb />spoiled, I would like his reason to be because he<lb />loves me and not because Hallmark tells him to.<lb />So, if you celebrate it, do something creative<lb />at least. Not your typical dinner date with<lb />a movie and not those disgusting, confusing<lb />chocolates that taste weird, and flowers that wilt<lb />and die (Do you want our relationship to die?).<lb />When you are all sitting at your boring dinners,<lb />watching sappy movies, I will be stewing in my<lb />disdain for the day and the fact that the ideal,<lb />perfect Valentines Day will never come. So<lb />Happy Single Awareness Day, Happy VD and<lb />many more.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />~Time to enter<lb />the real world<lb /><lb />But are we ready?<lb /><lb />MARGOT ROGERSON<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />I have seen a number of people graduate that<lb />had no idea what they were going to do afterward.<lb />I never thought I was going to be one of those<lb /><lb />people. For as long as I can remember, I always .<lb />knew exactly what I wanted in life. Now as I enter |<lb /><lb />my last few semesters in school, I am beginning<lb />to question what I always thought I knew.<lb /><lb />Do I want to go to graduate school? Do I want<lb />to get a job? Am I even going to use my degree?<lb />Where do I want to be in five years? These ques-<lb />tions seem almost overwhelming in the moment<lb />you are faced with them. I wonder how many col-<lb /><lb />lege students get to this point and have no idea.<lb /><lb />How do we examine these questions critically?<lb /><lb />I thought talking to my parents and friends<lb />would help, but they quickly pointed out that they<lb />cannot answer the questions about what I want<lb />for my life. So then I thought of my options. It<lb />seems like the possibilities are endless. When I<lb />think about how many options I do have, I cannot<lb />help but be proud to be an American.<lb /><lb />So what to do? I think the problem for most<lb />of us is that we spend too much time thinking<lb />about making sure we make the right choice.<lb />Too many of us try to focus on what we want in<lb />the long term instead of Just figuring out what<lb />we want right now. The worst thing that hap-<lb />pens if you start something and hate it is that<lb />you change it.<lb /><lb />With few exceptions, we have the ability to<lb />modify what we want out of life. Once I concen-<lb />trated on what I want right now, it seemed a lot<lb />easier to make decisions about the next steps in<lb /><lb />my life. I am still scared of getting myself into a<lb /><lb />career or degree that I hate, but its almost time<lb />to enter the real world, with both feet first.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />{ Let the Good Times Roll! }<lb /><lb />THURSDAY JANUARY 31, 2008<lb /><lb />PAGE A5<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />| want to watch Muppet Treasure Island,<lb />but my VCR is broken.<lb /><lb />FOR BILL CLINTON 7<lb /><lb />HILLARY'S CAMP SEEKS GENTLER CAMPAIGN ROLE oe<lb /><lb />.. It echoes in my mind<lb />until I have to either think of ponies, or throw my<lb />head into a rock. What could I possibly be describ-<lb />ing? Stupid people ... and not just normal stupid<lb />people, but stupid people in college.<lb /><lb />These people? surrounded me my entire life, but for<lb />some odd reason, God, or the gods, chose college as the<lb />general meeting place for all stupid people of America. I<lb />dont understand how they got here, or how they survive<lb />"a diet of FOX and Hot Pockets most likely " but they<lb />could comprise about half of this university.<lb /><lb />Now I cannot write this entire article with just<lb />my own stories, so | will provide for all of you some<lb />of the stupidest things I have ever seen or heard.<lb />Note: All of these events really happened, and they<lb />all happened at ECU. Another note: Ifit takes some<lb />soul-searching to discover why these events are clas-<lb />sified as stupid,? then it may be that you yourself<lb />have become stupid or temporarily distracted.<lb /><lb />My first event deals with my worst experience,<lb />which took place in my English class. My teacher<lb />made everyone openly speak about their final paper's<lb />topic in order to publicly critique it. My topic is irrel-<lb />evant, but it lead to the teacher asking the class if<lb />they knew what I wanted to write about, specifically<lb />if anyone knew what Hezbollah? was. Seeing the no<lb />one did, one girl in particular took up the struggle<lb />and mentioned that she just didnt have enough time<lb />to watch TV.? Slowly, she was informed that news<lb /><lb />was printed in newspapers and played on the radio, .<lb /><lb />but this only got her to mention to the class that she<lb />was in fact ignorant, and that it just doesnt matter<lb />if I am ignorant of everything.?<lb /><lb />Another enthralling tale was told to me by a<lb /><lb />friend, and it took place at a college Democrats table.<lb />One of the college Democrats was discussing with<lb />a student whether or not he had registered to vote.<lb />It turned out that he had, but he was not going to<lb />vote because, as he put it, What is the point? George<lb />Bush is Just going to win again.? True patriots never<lb />do vote anyway.<lb /><lb />This not being the worst of it, my girlfriend was<lb />speaking to a girl online about a project they had to<lb />do for, what else, English class. They had to get a<lb />historical document and write about it in some form.<lb />Curious, she asked her what she was doing for her<lb />project. The girl eloquently wrote back, It is a letter<lb /><lb />from some war in 1942.? The American Revolution<lb /><lb />or the Civil war? We may never know.<lb />This tale isnt as much about ignorance or mis-<lb /><lb />understanding as it is sheer and absolute stupidity.<lb /><lb />In a communications class, the topic of stereotypes<lb />was being discussed. The teacher asked the class,<lb />What are some stereotypes for Asians?? A wonder-<lb />ful lady raised her hand and proceeded to inform the<lb />class that In Charlotte all the Chinese people sell<lb />ecstasy. And elephants can be scientists. What drew<lb />this girl to speak will probably never be known.<lb />If anyone reading this believes some of these<lb />stories are out of context, or are mere brain-farts,<lb />then you are in denial. Stupid people make it beyond<lb />college too, and even into the mainstream world.<lb />The worst of which I saw was Sherri Sheppard, of<lb />The View, clueless as to whether or not the world was<lb />flat. I can only imagine the numbers of people at this<lb /><lb />. school who must not know the answer to that, but<lb /><lb />even 1 percent is worth a good cry. Fortunately the<lb />urge to pour molten lead down my ear lessens with the<lb />thought that one day I will be able to step out of this<lb />university and have a diploma which separates me, on<lb />paper at least, from the American status quo.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Bratty<lb />Brat Bratz<lb /><lb />Or growing up too fast<lb /><lb />LARA OLIVER<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Okay, I admit it. Ive never really been hip? or<lb />cool? or anything like that in my life. In middle<lb />school, I preferred riding horses to going shop-<lb />ping or getting interested in boys (didnt even<lb />date one till I was 16). In high school I hung out<lb />mostly with the nerdy crowd or the overachievers<lb />" the girls who didnt go out on Friday night<lb />because they had an exam next Wednesday, or<lb />the boys who could tell you what saving throw<lb />to use against an Orc, but couldn't tell you when<lb />the prom was to save their life.<lb /><lb />In college I mostly turned all that around. I<lb />started wearing clothes that weren't from Wal-<lb />Mart and paid attention to music that was made<lb />after the 1800s. Yet, I was still completely baffled<lb /><lb />~by most trends that swept the campus. Ugg boots:<lb />you mean like ugly?? Leggings for pants: doesnt<lb />that make you cold? And of course ripping your<lb />blue jeans right below your butt to show off that<lb />under-butt cleavage: Congrats! I can see your<lb />ripped-up underwear too.<lb /><lb />_ So its no surprise that most trends among<lb />the generation below us either scare me to death<lb />or confuse me. It seems like the girls who'll be<lb />the trophy wives to our generation of men are a<lb />lot, well, sluttier than we were. I remember slap<lb />bracelets, jelly shoes and wearing shorts that<lb />matched our T-shirts being all the rage when<lb />we were 10. Wearing a kitten sweater? Why not<lb />pair it with kitten sweatpants? The height of<lb />fashion! But now it seems like 10-year-olds care<lb />more about how hot they look than if their outfit<lb />is comfortable enough to play tag in. I babysat<lb />two girls (one 9, the other 7) the other month,<lb />and they both owned multiple pairs of shorts<lb />with words like HOTTIE? or BRAT? printed<lb />on the butt. What kinds of parents draw atten-<lb />tion to that area? Why not buy them a T-shirt<lb />with a witty slogan like Easily led into vans for<lb />candy? instead?<lb /><lb />It also seems that being trendy has finally<lb />sunk its claws into the male youth as well. Most<lb />of you remember that when girls were getting into<lb />makeup and high-heels, boys still thought girls<lb />were icky and wanted to play with Transformers<lb />or GI Joes instead. Yet, this generation of tweens?<lb />(oh, God, I cant even stand typing that word) has<lb />convinced the boys to start caring about things<lb />even adult men dont even care about, like fashion.<lb />At my boyfriends parents house the other day, his<lb />10-year-old brother told me that he knew a boy<lb />in his class who dressed like I do, in skinny jeans,<lb />tight shirts and chucks. Now, the way I dress<lb />is great for my lifestyle of walking, sitting and<lb />walking some more,.but I cant imagine trying<lb />to run laps around a jungle gym or ne like<lb />that without tearing the seams.<lb /><lb />I guess a lot of people cant blame this whole .<lb />new-age of fashionable? kids on things like<lb />Disneys pop-idols like Lindsay Lohan, Hillary<lb />Duff, or (guh) Hannah Montana, or the popu-<lb />larity of Bratz dolls (which I affectionately call<lb />Slutz dolls), but I think the real problem lies with<lb />parents (doesn't it always?). It seems that parents,<lb />beginning with our generation, care more about<lb />their kids liking them than respecting them. It<lb />began with latch-key kids like my friends and me<lb />getting money thrown at them in replacement of<lb />love, and now its morphed itself into becoming<lb />your kids best friend rather than their parent.<lb /><lb />Lets let kids be kids, not mini-adults. I cher-<lb /><lb />ish the memories I have of not caring what boys<lb />thought of me and thinking ponies were the best<lb />things ever. I cant imagine replacing those with<lb /><lb />worry about whether I was hot? at 8 years old.<lb /><lb />Maybe more parents need to remember their<lb />childhoods and try to encourage their kids to<lb />stay kids as long as possible, too.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com |<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Kimberly Bellamy J.D. A headache, sensitivity to<lb /><lb />light, extreme hunger and thirst...can<lb /><lb />all follow a drunken evening. But some<lb />effects of these outings cant be solved<lb />with a cup of coffee or an aspirin.<lb />Ever looked through your phone<lb />the night after youve had too much too<lb />drink and realize that you called your<lb />ex-boyfriend or that person you haven't<lb /><lb />talked to in six months? Its called<lb /><lb />drunk dialing, and its a phenomenon<lb />that has plagued college students all<lb />over the country.<lb /><lb />According to urbandictionary.com,<lb />drunk dialing is described as a very<lb />bad, uncontrollable urge to call some-<lb /><lb />one (usually the opposite sex or your<lb /><lb />boss) on the phone after an evening<lb />of heavy alcohol intake. Will usually<lb />result in the loss of friends, job, your<lb />reputation, and self respect.?<lb /><lb />_.., Drunk dialing has become so popu- |<lb />lar in recent years that phone companies<lb /><lb />have picked up on the action and decided<lb />to do something about it.<lb /><lb />The mobile phone company LG<lb />started selling their own breathalyzer?<lb />phone in 2005 to its South Korean con-<lb /><lb />~sumers. The Samsung LP4100 phone<lb /><lb />worked like this: if a person blew a<lb />small breath directly into the phone<lb /><lb />_and had a blood alcohol content over the<lb /><lb />legal limit, a picture of a car running<lb />recklessly into cones would pop up. The<lb /><lb />Alcohol and your cell dont mix<lb /><lb />phone also had a program that would<lb />block any outgoing calls to contacts<lb />that that person wished to avoid (i.e.<lb />ex-girlfriends, bosses, coworkers). In<lb />addition, the LP4100 was programmed<lb />to measure the amount of alcohol in a<lb /><lb />,persons body in relation to where they<lb /><lb />lived. Although LG has marketed to the<lb />South Korean and U.K. markets, there<lb />is no date set when it will be available<lb />in the U.S.<lb /><lb />LG wasnt the only mobile phone<lb />company that picked up on the drunk<lb />dialing craze. Verizon Australia started<lb />their own version of trying to stop<lb /><lb />drunk dialers; they gave their custom-<lb /><lb />ers a service that allowed them to dial<lb />333 followed by the number of any<lb /><lb />_ person they did not want to drunk dial.<lb /><lb />A block would be placed on the users<lb />phone not allowing them to call those<lb />numbers until 6 a.m. the next morning.<lb />However, Verizon doesnt offer this<lb />service to its U.S. consumers.<lb />According to Renita Moore, Mental<lb />Health Outreach Specialist and Out-<lb /><lb />reach Coordinator for ECUs Center<lb /><lb />for Counseling and Development says<lb /><lb />that drunk dialing is not a habit that<lb /><lb />students should develop.<lb /><lb />Although seemingly fun, if your<lb />level of intoxication is to the point<lb />where you wont even remember making<lb />calls, you run the risk of creating prob-<lb />lems and misunderstandings with your<lb />friends and family that you then have<lb />no context for,? said Moore.<lb /><lb />Its definitely not a habit that you<lb />want to form, especially if you are<lb />not coherent to tell who exactly you<lb />are calling and what exactly you are<lb /><lb />saying to them.?<lb /><lb />According to a recent survey by the<lb />National Health Center for Statistics,<lb /><lb />see ALCOHOL page A7<lb /><lb />Center will spon sor 9<lb />month full of events _<lb /><lb />The Ledonia Wright Cultural Center<lb />celebrates Black History Month<lb /><lb />ELISE PHILLIPS<lb />FEATURES EDITOR _<lb /><lb />ECUs Ledonia Wright Cultural Center<lb />(LWCC) will be hosting programs and events<lb />the month of February to celebrate Black<lb /><lb />History Month.<lb /><lb />We have a whole series of programs [that<lb />we put on], and the celebration of Black History<lb />Month is one of the focuses of the series,? said Rod<lb /><lb />Bradley, director of the LWCC.<lb /><lb />_ The topics [used for celebrating Black History<lb />Month] range from history documentaries of the<lb />Civil War to the opportunity to talk about cultural<lb /><lb />expression with art, music and poetry. Whether it<lb />is about life, success or just<lb />history, Papalas has taught<lb />an innumerable amount of<lb />students in his 37 years as a<lb />professor at ECU.<lb /><lb />Papalas, whose grandpar-<lb />ents emigrated from Greece<lb />to the U.S. in 1900, was born<lb />in Detroit, M.I. in 1939. His<lb />father was a successful busi-<lb />nessman who had his own con-<lb />struction business. He loved<lb />growing up in Detroit.<lb /><lb />Detroit was great,? said<lb />Papalas. The city was well<lb />regulated, had full-employment<lb />and essentially no crime.?<lb /><lb />Papalas enjoyed visiting<lb />Canada, watching the Uni-<lb />versity of Michigan at Ann<lb />Arbor football games and<lb />watching the Detroit Tigers<lb />baseball games.<lb /><lb />He enrolled at Wayne State<lb />University where he considered<lb />a career in medicine, but was<lb />still not entirely sure about<lb />what he wanted to do. The<lb />answer came to him on a trip to<lb />Greece he took in 1960.<lb /><lb />T fell in love with Greece.<lb /><lb />EQUAL HOUSING. -<lb />OPPORTUNITY 2:<lb /><lb />It was a great experience,<lb />Papalas said.<lb /><lb />Upon arrival back at<lb />Wayne State, Papalas began<lb />taking courses pertaining to<lb />Greece and the classics. He<lb />loved the study of history<lb />because of his fascination with<lb />human behavior. |<lb /><lb />He also learned several lan-<lb />guages including modern and<lb />ancient Greek, French, Latin<lb />and German. He graduated with<lb />a degree in ancient history and<lb />decided that he wanted to teach.<lb />He got his Ph.D. at the Univer-<lb />sity of Chicago where he wrote<lb />his thesis on Roman Athens.<lb /><lb />In 1970, Papalas came to<lb />ECU because of an opening the<lb />university had for a classical<lb />history teacher. He wanted to<lb /><lb />eventually teach in the Midwest<lb /><lb />and originally only planned to<lb />stay at ECU for a short period of<lb />time. However, Papalas instantly<lb />loved the university and the city.<lb />Greenville has a nice climate,?<lb />Papalas said. I like the rural<lb />flavor and the people here are<lb />also very nice.?<lb /><lb />Papalas research consists of<lb />Roman Athens, sea-power in the<lb />ancient world and ancient sports.<lb />In his spare time, Papalas enjoys<lb />playing golf, although not as<lb />much as he would like, reading<lb />fiction and the classics and keep-<lb />ing up with the Detroit Tigers.<lb /><lb />Papalas still travels back to<lb />Europe and likes to visit Michi-<lb />gan where he still has family.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ FEATURES<lb /><lb />PAGE 7<lb /><lb />OHOL continued from A6é<lb /><lb />SARAH CAMPBELL "<lb />_ EDITOR IN CHIEF<lb /><lb />oe red wal pay Penbute to are ongoing feleorch oy Cay<lb /><lb />_programs geared to fight and potentially treat the deadly disease.<lb /><lb />sooo: shade and awareness events within the p eramaeaty<lb /><lb />Money raised throughout the day will be donated to aid in edu- /<lb /><lb />gstatistics<lb /><lb />there is a link between wire-<lb />less usage and alcohol con-<lb />sumption in the U.S.<lb /><lb />The prevalence of binge<lb />drinking (i.e., having five<lb />or more alcoholic drinks in<lb />one day during the past year)<lb />among wireless-only adults<lb />was twice as high as the prev-<lb />alence among adults living<lb />in landline households,? the<lb />survey said.<lb /><lb />There may not be a special<lb />phone or plan in the U.S. that<lb />college students can use to<lb />stop the prevalence of drunk<lb />dialing, there are ways to<lb />prevent embarrassment.<lb /><lb />Making an x? list of any<lb />person that would be a bad<lb />idea to call after a long night<lb /><lb />of heavy drinking could be one<lb />possible solution. Place an x?<lb />by that persons name in your<lb />contact list so if you try to<lb />call them, the x? pops up and<lb />hopefully halts the subsequent<lb />phone call. This will certainly be a<lb />great stage for perhaps the most underrated band of all time to display their talents.<lb /><lb />9. The commercials<lb /><lb />Without a doubt, the reason why most people watch the Super Bowl"other<lb />than for the game"is to watch the new commercials. Companies spend millions<lb />every year for a 30 second spot and the viewers usually get great returns with<lb />that investment. While there are always some flops, overall the ads are usually<lb />great and add to the element surrounding the entire event.<lb /><lb />8. The Giants defense<lb /><lb />New Yorks defense ranked 17th in the regular season for points per game<lb />allowed, and 7th for total yards per game allowed. While those numbers obviously<lb />dont jump off the page, rest assured that the Giants defense is one of the most<lb />entertaining to watch play. They lead the league in sacks with 53 and feature<lb />arguably the best pass rushers seen in years.<lb /><lb />7 The Patriots offense<lb /><lb />Any fan of football, whether a New England fan or not, watched continuously<lb />over the course of the regular season as the Patriots seemingly scored at will on<lb />opponents. The stat lines at the end of the season was amazing: New England<lb />averaged almost 37 points per game, Tom Brady threw 50 touchdowns on the<lb />year and Randy Moss was the recipient of 23 of those touchdowns. Of the 411<lb />yards per game that they averaged, 295 came through the air.<lb /><lb />6. The road warriors<lb /><lb />The Giants have made a living out of winning on the road this season. New<lb />York is undefeated in their last 10 road games, after suffering their only road<lb />loss of the season in week one to the Dallas Cowboys. Not only is that amazing,<lb />but also the fact that they have held their opponents to only 148 points during<lb />the 10-game streak. Also keep in mind that the Giants have won in the United<lb /><lb />Kingdom as well. If they can win overseas I would think they could absolutely<lb /><lb />win in Glendale this weekend.<lb /><lb />Be Bill Belichick<lb /><lb />Bill the hoodie? Belichick could become the second head coach to win four<lb />Super Bowls on Sunday with a New England victory. The only other coach to "<lb />accomplish this feat was former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Chuck Noll.<lb />The season started rough for Belichick, in particular with the whole spygate?<lb />scandal, but after going 16-0 and winning AP coach of the year, the season<lb />can be considered a huge success. He will go down win or lose Sunday as one<lb />of the best to ever coach the game of football.<lb /><lb />~f, [Eli] Manning vs. Brady<lb /><lb />For years it has been Peyton Manning versus Tom Brady, and their<lb />respective teams for dominance of the AFC. In fact, in 2003, 2004 and 2006<lb />Brady and Manning ended each other seasons. Now Peytons brother, Eli,<lb />gets an opportunity to stop Bradys season just like his older brother did last<lb />season. Eli will need to steal Peytons game plan as well, as he will need to<lb />out-gun Brady in order to win. It defiantly could happen as Brady is coming<lb />off a three-interception game against the Chargers, and is nursing an ailing<lb />high ankle sprain.<lb /><lb />, 3 A rematch of one of the seasons<lb />® greatest games<lb /><lb />New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin didnt have to play his start-<lb />ers in the week 17 contest against the Patriots, but boy I bet hes glad that<lb />he did. The Giants lead 28-16 before ev entually losing 38-35. Even though<lb />New York was unable to pull out a win, it realized it was capable of playing<lb />with the very best. Many Giants players admitted they used the game as<lb />motivation to make their miraculous playoff run. To reach the Super Bow],<lb />New York beat ~Tampa Bay, Dallas and Green Bay"all on the road.<lb /><lb />Le The Boston vs. New York rivalry<lb /><lb />Its a known fact that Boston hates New York and vice-versa. With<lb />all due respect to the great game of baseball, as well as the Red Sox and<lb />Yankees; nothing can compare to the tension that will be shared between<lb />the nations biggest cities come Sunday. With a Patriots victory, New York<lb />fans will go into seclusion due to the fact that the Red Sox won the World<lb />Series this past year while the Yankees barely made the playoffs. Also the<lb />Boston Celtics are dominating while the Knicks are one of the worst teams<lb />in the NBA. To say the least, Boston sports are alive and well.<lb /><lb />1p The Patriots march towards perfection<lb /><lb />With a win against the Giants Sunday, The Patriots will become the<lb />second team to go undefeated; sharing the honor with the 1972 Miami<lb />Dolphins. What many people fail to realize however is the Dolphins<lb />finished the season 17-0 while the Patriots are a win Sunday from 19-0.<lb />Also, Miami benefited from one of the easiest schedules in NFL history,<lb />as its opponents combined win-loss record was 43-86-3, and only played<lb />two games against teams that finished above .500. If the Patriots win on<lb />Sunday then the nation Would be undoubtedly watching the best team to<lb />ever step onto the gridiron.<lb /><lb />Jim Mandich, a tight end on the 72 Dolphins recently told Fox Sports,<lb /><lb />They [Patriots] would kick our Lente from one side of the field to the<lb />other.?<lb /><lb />So there you have it, 10 reasons to watch the Super Bowl. Whether your<lb />team wins or loses come Sunday, just sit back and enjoy the game. It should<lb />be a great contest.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />f<lb /><lb /></p>

Hinnant said referring to last<lb />seasons injury. But coach told me I was going<lb />to rebound and get back to playing form, and I<lb />did. We have a great strength and conditioning<lb />coach (Mark Thompson) and after a long summer<lb />of hard work, harder work-outs than Ive ever<lb />had before, it feels great to return to the lineup<lb />and compete.?<lb /><lb />Highly touted out of Fork Union Military<lb />Academy in Virginia, Hinnant lived up to the<lb />hype freshman year, starting all 28 contests and<lb />averaging 10.3 points per game, earning Con-<lb />ference USA All-Freshman honors. Despite his<lb />efforts freshman year, ECU finished 8-20. But this<lb />years club has a revamped lineup that includes<lb />senior leader Darrel Jenkins, freshman point<lb /><lb />guard Brock Young, and 6-foot-9 sophomore John<lb /><lb />Fields; all new fixtures in a lineup thats surpass-<lb />ing preseason projections, placing the team on a<lb />level that can compete with the best competition<lb />in Conference USA.<lb /><lb />Despite the projections (projected last in the<lb />conference), we know our game and play within<lb />ourselves,? said Hinnant. We have a lot of depth<lb />on this years club and with Brock and Darrel<lb />penetrating opposing defenses and creating for<lb />us on the outside, we can compete with anyone<lb />in the conference.?<lb /><lb />Hinnant has started all 18 games this season<lb />and in the past nine contests, hes become com-<lb />fortable within ECUs offensive scheme, averag-<lb />ing 16 points and three treys a game, and netting<lb />a career-high 30 points in ECUs biggest victory<lb /><lb />of the year against in-state rival, NC State.<lb /><lb />And despite the recovery from his leg injury,<lb />Hinnant has improved his.three-point percentage<lb /><lb />from 33 percent his freshman year to a team-lead-<lb /><lb />ing 41 percent beyond the arch this season.<lb /><lb />Hinnant has prepared hard physically and<lb />mentally to return to this level of play, but he still<lb />recognizes that his game is still maturing and<lb />though hard to see, he recognizes the weaknesses<lb />that still need to be addressed.<lb /><lb />I need to improve defensively and I know<lb />coach expects me to develop on that end of the<lb />floor,? he said. I have work to do, and if I can<lb /><lb />~improve and contribute on both ends, Ill be<lb /><lb />happy.?<lb /><lb />Hinnant has secured his place in the starting<lb />lineup and while opposing defenses are hesitant to<lb />give hie an inch of space, Hinnant knows team-<lb />mates Cory Farmer and James Legan will knock<lb />down the open three-pointer without hesitating,<lb /><lb />see HINNANT page B3<lb /><lb />Photo by Jessi Braxton<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Sam Hinnant (4) and Brock Young (10) have helped solidify one of C-USAs top backourts this season.<lb /><lb />enior leadership reigns supreme<lb /><lb />Nicole Days is providing the Lady Pirates with strong leadership and frontcourt play in 2008.<lb /><lb />Photo by Robyn McLawhorn<lb /><lb />Days controls ECUs<lb />post play<lb /><lb />SETH STRINGER<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />As the only senior on this<lb />years Lady Pirates basketball<lb />team, Nicole Days is asserting<lb />her veteran leadership on the<lb />court and in practice.<lb /><lb />Averaging over seven points<lb />and seven boards a game, Days<lb />stats dont tell the full story<lb />of her contributions to a Lady<lb />Pirates team stacked with<lb />underclassmen.<lb /><lb />Nicole plays like a veteran<lb />and leads by example,? said ECU<lb />coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener.<lb />She has such a great feel for<lb />the game and her influence and<lb />work with the post players is<lb />where shes most valuable and<lb />where her leadership shines.?<lb /><lb />Standing at 6-feet tall, Days<lb />is known for her strength in<lb />the post, and her trademark<lb />goggles. Since she is com-<lb />pletely blind in her left eye, she<lb />is required by NCAA rules to<lb />sport protective eye-wear.<lb /><lb />A freak shop accident in<lb />high school gave Days this<lb />burden, but through adversity<lb />shes become a fixture on an<lb />ECU team thats fresh off a<lb />Cinderelfa run to the NCAA<lb />tournament.<lb /><lb />And with wins against N.C.<lb />State and Georgetown this year,<lb />and coming off two straight<lb />conference wins, Days is poised<lb />to lead the Lady Pirates to<lb />shades of last years success.<lb /><lb />We can definitely make<lb />a run similar to last years<lb />team,? said Days. This group<lb />is finally playing together and<lb />we've all made adjustments to<lb />better the team and perform<lb />night in and night out.?<lb /><lb />Performing night in and<lb />night out has been a theme to<lb />Days impressive collegiate play<lb />at ECU; leading the conference<lb />in field goal percentage fresh-<lb />man year, earning the teams<lb />best defensive player award<lb />sophomore year and playing an<lb />integral role in the teams string<lb />of 10 straight conference wins<lb />her junior year.<lb /><lb />Days work ethic has been<lb /><lb />the main reason why shes _<lb /><lb />assumed the leadership role on<lb />this Lady Pirate team stacked<lb />with diaper dandies and junior<lb />guards.
