        <p>TUESDAY JANUARY 29,2008 paGE A4<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />Am | wrong for wanting to marry someone<lb />rich and pop out about 4 kids???<lb /><lb />{ Let the Good Times Roll! }<lb /><lb />All about<lb /><lb />accents<lb /><lb />Why the fascination?<lb /><lb />LISA ENSMINGER<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Accents ... such an interesting concept<lb />within the regions of the United States. Some<lb />people admire different accents. Some people are<lb />plainly irritated with accents. Anywhere you go<lb />in America, an accent and dialogue can change<lb />dramatically. The teasing and conversing (that<lb />has also directly affected me) I hear from people<lb />about different dialects has simply inspired me<lb /><lb />to write about my experience with sucha widely |<lb /><lb />talked about, but seldom thought about topic.<lb /><lb />I am going to use myself as an example<lb />on how my dialect has affected my daily life. I<lb />come from the Midwest where the accents are<lb /><lb />supposedly neutral? (according to the news<lb /><lb />broadcasters), but coming down to the South, I<lb />do not sound so neutral to a lot of people. I am<lb />made fun of for my use of OTs? because I am from<lb />Ohio, but I never actually noticed the way I spoke<lb /><lb />until I moved down here. I do not think I can go.<lb />one week without someone commenting or jokingT<lb /><lb />about my different accent (and I know I am guilty<lb />for teasing my roommate for her accent too). Even<lb />when I travel up north to New York City, I have<lb /><lb />been told I have a Southern accent, and accord-.<lb /><lb />ing to the Southerners I have a Northern accent.<lb />Sometimes it just gets confusing!<lb /><lb />When I first came to east Carolina, it took<lb />a while to get used to the significant difference<lb />in pronunciation. When my roommate said, I<lb />am. going to boil some water,? for the first time,<lb />I had no idea what she was saying because of her<lb />Southern accent. I heard, I am going to bowl some<lb />water,? and quite frankly, I was.a little confused.<lb /><lb />I go home and notice my own accent Juxta-<lb />posed with my friendsT and get blamed for a slight<lb />Southern twang, then I come back to school and<lb />the Southern dialect has become second nature<lb />to me. This, my friends, is the confusion I think<lb />about from moving to the South. It amazes me<lb />to listen to the different types of accents, dialect<lb />and word choices, all because of where we come<lb />from. Even with the Southern accent, it com-<lb />pletely depends on which town one grew up in.<lb />The smaller towns have a thicker drawl, while<lb />the bigger cities such as Raleigh have a slightly<lb />lighter accent. It just fascinates me how location<lb />has such a significant impact on everyone's speech<lb />and daily life. 1 am sure I am not the only one<lb /><lb />who is affected by these ridicules more than once -<lb /><lb />a week for the way I speak. So, talk the way you<lb />talk, and do not feel ashamed if someone bashes<lb />Ma for your silly accent! |<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Obama!<lb />Oh, Mama!<lb /><lb />Or going from red to blue<lb /><lb />J.D. LEWIS<lb />OPINION EDITOR<lb /><lb />ItTs hard to believe ITm actually getting<lb />excited about a Democrat. I mean, I voted for<lb />Bob Dole in 1996, and I voted for W. twice, but<lb />thereTs just something about Barack Obama that<lb />energizes me.<lb /><lb />At first my interest in him was purely because<lb />heTs not Hillary Clinton or Rapunzel Edwards of<lb />the $400 haircut, but I began to take a closer look<lb />at him once HillaryTs attack dog, Bill, came out<lb />verbally abusing Obama and any reporter who<lb />dared to question it. Any candidate, Republican or<lb />Democrat, who can elicit that much fear from the<lb />self-anointed Messiah of the Democratic Party,<lb />certainly. deserves our attention.<lb /><lb />Frankly, I wish that the next time Bill Clinton<lb />berates a reporter for asking him a legitimate<lb />question about something he or his wife have<lb />said or done on the campaign trail, the reporter<lb />would look him squarely in the eye and tell him<lb />what he can kiss ... but, I digress.<lb /><lb />Obama is the type of candidate who, like<lb /><lb />John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, can restore<lb /><lb />pride in the nation. Just listening to him talk,<lb />even if you donTt necessarily agree with him on<lb />every single issue (and none of us are going to<lb />agree with anybody on everything), makes you<lb />feel good, like we can be and do so much more<lb />as individuals and as a nation.<lb /><lb />Barack Obama hasnTt played the race card<lb />once in this campaign, unlike Bill Clinton, whose<lb />remarks comparing ObamaTs recent win in the<lb />South Carolina primary to Jesse JacksonTs win<lb />- there in the 1980s seemed to suggest that Obama<lb /><lb />only won because of his race. Even if Hillary "<lb /><lb />Clinton had received all of John EdwardsT votes,<lb />Obama would still have beaten her by 10 percent<lb />" still a comfortable margin " and the differ-<lb />ence between Barack Obama and Jesse Jackson<lb />is like chicken salad and chicken ... well, you<lb />know. That Bill Clinton feels the need to make<lb />such baseless accusations Just goes to show that<lb />the Hillary campaign had grossly underestimated<lb />the senator from Illinois.<lb /><lb />Barack Obama represents change. Hillary has<lb />said she represents change while fighting for the<lb />same things sheTs fought for the past 25 years.<lb />If you have nothing to show after 25 years, itTs<lb />time to move on and give someone else a chance.<lb />This country desperately needs a president who<lb />will stand up for all Americans and restore<lb />- AmericaTs place on the world stage. Half the people<lb />you like will not be in the election, so with this in<lb />mind, table the thought of voting until it comes,<lb />and for now look toward your own campus.<lb />You know, where things actually have a higher<lb />probability of affecting you. By this I refer to<lb />the spring student body elections at our very<lb />own school.<lb /><lb />With a prestigious title, a handful of benefits<lb />and a personal assistant if you are lucky enough, I<lb />could not imagine anyone who would not want to<lb />campaign the spot. Where to begin?? some may<lb />wonder, and the answer is more straightforward<lb />than you'd probably expect.<lb /><lb />When you first decide you want to run, make<lb />sure to tell everyone that you know. Think about<lb /><lb />it: the more people that know, the more votes<lb /><lb />you will get! Why hide your ambitions as if they<lb />were a state secret? Put your hat into the ring<lb />and have some real fun.<lb /><lb />' Now that everyone knows your intentions,<lb />continue to spread the word. As soon as you<lb />have the green light from the elections commit-<lb />tee, spread it like wildfire. I am not talking one<lb />or two kids out in front of Dowdy " I mean an<lb />entire fleet of your closest friends. Rain, sleet or<lb />hail really tests their friendship. If they are not<lb />passing out fliers with your name on it, they are<lb />wasting your time.<lb /><lb />If you learned anything from high school<lb />elections, it should have been that everyone<lb />loves candy ... that and attractive-looking people.<lb />Heaven forbid the two should ever be combined,<lb />because then no one else could fathom a chance<lb />in the election. Hot people and delicious eats and<lb />treats? I could not resist giving them my vote!<lb /><lb />If all else fails, stick to the age-old truths of<lb />politics. If you have no reputation to stand on,<lb />you lose nothing by slinging as much mud as<lb />you find possible. Everyone enjoys a good smear<lb />campaign as much as the next guy, so why not<lb />be the player to start one? It is never any fun to<lb />play by the rules, so set the bar high as you start<lb /><lb />~ to break them.<lb /><lb />I can guarantee this coming spring elec-<lb />tion will be a lot of fun and everyone reading<lb />this can get in on the action. Who cares if you<lb />have a snowballTs chance in hell? DonTt know<lb />about you, but I like those odds. Will I see you<lb />on the trail?<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Must love dogs<lb /><lb />Everything else is negotiable<lb /><lb />LARA OLIVER<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />So, whatTs your deal breaker?<lb /><lb />You know- that one thing that pinpoints a<lb />person's personality for you? That trait that you<lb />Just can't ignore in a person, whether itTs good<lb />or bad? For some people itTs their religion, for<lb />others itTs musical tastes, and for many, sports.<lb />For me, itTs your feelings about dogs. 7<lb /><lb />It may seem a bit shallow, but I just canTt<lb />stand a person who dislikes dogs. Now, donTt<lb /><lb />get me wrong, I love other types of animals. ITve<lb /><lb />owned a hamster, three parakeets, two finches, a<lb />rabbit, and, for a very brief period, a turtle. But<lb />throughout all that time ITve always had a dog I<lb />could turn to, that little ball of fluffy joy that was<lb />always happy to see me no matter how long I was<lb />gone, that never woke me up in the middle of the<lb />night by knocking itTs cage onto the ground, and,<lb />best of all, couldnTt give me salmonella.<lb /><lb />Now I know that a lot of people are what<lb /><lb />you call cat people.? People who maintain that<lb />dogs are dumber than cats, less refined and more<lb />icky.? ITd venture to say that these so-called cat<lb />people? are just lazy dog people.? Sure a dog may<lb />require a lot of energy, get messy at times and<lb />eat more than cats, but I think thatTs part of the<lb />fun. The fact that you have another creature so<lb /><lb />dependent on you and so devoted to you is really<lb />sweet to me. ItTs like having a kid without that<lb />annoying teenager part. If you think about it, a<lb />cat isnTt any smarter than a dog. If they were, they<lb />wouldn't be happy with keeping their excrement<lb />in a box so close to their food.<lb /><lb />But, you know, I donTt dislike cats. In fact, |<lb /><lb />wanted one most of my life. Unfortunately, my<lb /><lb />mom had a really bad allergy, so I could never<lb />really hope for a kitty of my own. And really, I<lb /><lb />-am more wary of people who dislike dogs and<lb /><lb />cats than just dogs.<lb /><lb />ThereTs just something that I canTt seem to<lb />trust about a person who dislikes dogs. Maybe<lb />itTs the prissy way they back away from a drool-<lb /><lb />ing dogTs smile or the disdain in their voice over<lb /><lb />being in charge of another creature other than<lb /><lb />~themselves. Or maybe itTs the fact that studies<lb /><lb />have shown that owning a dog can make you<lb />live longer, and these people are just bitter that<lb /><lb />we dog lovers are going to live longer than they. -<lb /><lb />Whatever reason it is, it just rubs me the wrong<lb />way. Gives me the heebie-jeebies,? if you will.<lb /><lb />So you may call me crazy, but bring on your "<lb /><lb />Satan-worshiping, Ricky Martin-loving, New<lb />England Patriots fan-crazies. The concept for the film is<lb />simple but with a new and fresh approach,<lb />resulting in Cloverfield offering moviego-<lb />ers a somewhat new experience.<lb /><lb />The movie tells an all too common<lb />story with a new and creative spin. It is<lb /><lb />shot from the perspective of the main<lb />characterTs handheld camcorder. It starts<lb />with an unassuming going-away party but<lb /><lb />quickly turns chaotic when the partygo-<lb /><lb />ers witness unexplained explosions and<lb />destruction throughout the city. Early<lb />on, chaos ensues and an overwhelming<lb />sense of confusion envelops the movie. As<lb />onlookers observe the subsequent destruc-<lb />tion of New York City, the movie begins<lb />to slowly but surely develop the storylines<lb />of the main characters.<lb /><lb />However, the movie has a simple but<lb />effective storyline. Essentially, the city is<lb />attacked by a monster, and while the city<lb />is evacuated the main character decides to<lb />stay behind to save the woman he has an<lb />unprofessed loved for. Although at times<lb />the story seems quite cliché, the perspec-<lb />tive from which the story is told manages<lb />to keep you glued to your chair.<lb /><lb />Still though, the cheesy aspect of Clo-<lb />verfieldis what gives it its charm. As unbe-<lb />lievable and ridiculous as the story may<lb />be, the characters develop convincingly.<lb />The glimmer of humanity throughout<lb />the eminent disaster keeps your attention<lb />held throughout the surprisingly short<lb /><lb />movie.<lb /><lb />Although Cloverfield seems to lack any<lb />real depth, it still manages to be a simply<lb /><lb />- fun monster movie to watch.<lb /><lb />This is a movie to Just effortlessly<lb />observe and take in as a visually and<lb />stimulating sort of experience. DonTt think<lb />too hard about the marketing scheme or<lb />anything else, just take this movie at face<lb />value and enjoy it for what it is.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Amazon.com<lb /><lb />Examining Scar Tissue?<lb /><lb />Anthony KiedisT<lb />Autobiography<lb /><lb />JESSICA DUNLOW<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />1ONY KIEDIS<lb /><lb />In the light of James Frey's<lb />masterfully false 4 Million Little<lb /><lb />Pieces comes the autobiography<lb />of front-man and lead singer<lb />of the Red Hot Chili. Peppers<lb />Anthony KiedisT remarkable<lb />story of drug addiction and the<lb />perils of rising fame.<lb /><lb />Scar TissueTs first chapter<lb /><lb />opens up with Kiedis snorting<lb /><lb />cocaine with his drug dealer in<lb /><lb />- Arizona, and quickly shows the<lb /><lb />downward spiral to tripping on<lb />LSD with PeppersT bassist and<lb />KiedisT best friend, Flea. After<lb />dragging out his parentsT biolog-<lb />ical drive to reproduce, Kiedis<lb />finally gets to the good stuff and<lb />explains how his first experience<lb />with drugs was at the age of four,<lb />when his own father helped him<lb />get stoned with marijuana.<lb /><lb />The first chapter, Me, -<lb /><lb />ITm from Michigan,? which<lb />chronicles his surprisingly dull<lb />childhood of growing up on<lb />welfare and tales of his reckless<lb />father, though boring,<lb /><lb />is an important<lb /><lb />buildup for<lb />the tur-<lb />mm O71 |<lb />Of ius<lb />life.<lb /><lb />ide ae<lb /><lb />began<lb />t O<lb />figiet<lb />eve eee 8<lb /><lb />Stet asl (7<lb />The same Ky<lb /><lb />addiction-<lb />driven and<lb />immature<lb />actions taken<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />by his father are taken in every<lb />way by Kiedis.<lb /><lb />It seems that the autobiog-<lb />raphy is typical of every rock<lb />musician, because the general<lb />population expects huge rock<lb />stars to be addicted to every<lb />drug possible, to perform com-<lb />pletely plastered and overdose<lb /><lb />at least twice. Typically all of<lb /><lb />this includes having sex with a<lb />string of beautifully strange<lb />women, which in KiedisT<lb /><lb />case, follows along with J<lb /><lb />the stereotype.<lb />Kiedis even<lb />illustrates his life<lb />with pic-<lb /><lb />that of Keith Richards of the<lb />Rolling Stones and somehow<lb />miraculously he<lb /><lb />is still alive, the<lb /><lb />story becomes<lb />monoto-<lb />nous.<lb />For<lb />Red Hot<lb />Chili Pep-<lb /><lb />pers ~fanat-<lb />ics the story 1s<lb />intriguing, espe-<lb />cially when Kiedis<lb />explains the<lb />numerous<lb />changes in lead<lb />guitarists after<lb />the death of<lb /><lb />tures of<lb />these sexual con-<lb />quests and photos<lb />of the late guitar-<lb />ist Hillel, and many of<lb />these photos were taken<lb />during his innumerable drug<lb />binges. Toward the middle of<lb />the book, every single drug fest<lb />becomes extremely repet-<lb />itive. Also, regardless<lb />of the fact that his<lb /><lb />drug intake rivals.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Hillel. How-<lb />ever, it is an auto-<lb />biography of Kiedis, so Just<lb />when the information about the<lb />band begins to become interest-<lb />ing, he jets back to talking about<lb /><lb />another drug binge or another |<lb /><lb />crazy night of sex and violence.<lb /><lb />_ For those without a specific<lb />connection to the band, the book<lb />is somewhat lackluster, and<lb />even falls short of the false 4<lb />Million Little Pieces, which is a<lb />shame, because without all the<lb />,.and then I ODTd? and then<lb /><lb />this happened,? it would be a<lb />timeless tale. Needless to say,<lb />Kiedis is definitely not someone<lb />to idolize.<lb /><lb />Even with all of Scar TissueTs<lb />faults, it is interesting to appre-<lb />ciate the lives of the outsiders<lb />involved in KiedisT and the Pep-<lb />persT lives. Kiedis (with the help<lb />of Larry Sloman) writes bluntly<lb />about his experiences, the fights<lb />between himself and the rest<lb />of the band and the meanings<lb /><lb />behind most of his lyrics.<lb /><lb />If the book had been<lb /><lb />written as a biog-<lb /><lb />raphy of the entire<lb /><lb />band, it would<lb /><lb />have been more<lb />effective.<lb /><lb />For its pur-<lb />poses, Scar Tissue<lb />accomplishes its goal<lb />and chronicles<lb />the life of a<lb /><lb />screw-up<lb /><lb />, that got<lb />lucky enough<lb />to be ina highly suc-<lb />Cece. a4 band.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Popular entertainment brings<lb />live music to Mendenhall<lb /><lb />Staff photo<lb /><lb />Student Union offers<lb />students a chance to<lb />| get involved<lb /><lb />BRIAN MAZUROWSKI<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The Student UnionTs Popu-<lb />lar Entertainment Committee<lb />will bring live entertainment to<lb />the MendenhallTs Pirate Under-<lb />ground tomorrow night. he<lb />committee, which plays a vital<lb />role in developing, planning<lb />and executing entertainment<lb />on campus, will play host to<lb />Charlotte-based band The New<lb /><lb />Familiars.<lb /><lb />A mixture of traditional<lb />bluegrass and rock and roll has<lb />given The New Familiars noto-<lb />riety and attention throughout<lb />the state.<lb /><lb />Mendenhall Student Center plays hos<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />The band has created a<lb />unique style of music, with influ-<lb />ences ranging from the folk rock<lb />epics of Bob Dylan to the dark<lb />metal of Tool.<lb /><lb />I think a lot of it might stem<lb />from our openness as a group<lb />and how we all work so well<lb />together... and then, of course,<lb />we all have so much fun play-<lb />ing music, and we're passionate<lb /><lb />about the songs we write,? said<lb /><lb />vocalist Eric-Scott Guthrie.<lb />The Popular Entertainment<lb />Committee meets once a week<lb />to discuss the past weekTs events<lb />and to plan and discuss possible<lb />future events. The<lb />Thundering Herd fell to 3-3 in<lb />the conference and 11-9 overall.<lb /><lb />This win was really big,? said<lb />ECU guard LaCoya Terry, who<lb />had a game-high 18 points. The<lb />next couple of trips, both teams<lb />exchanged baskets until the<lb />Green Wave assumed control on<lb /><lb />a 6-O run to take the lead into the<lb /><lb />locker room, 30-23.<lb /><lb />ECU had trouble containing<lb />TulaneTs big men in the first half,<lb />as the Pirates were outscored in<lb />the paint, 18-8. Turnovers were<lb />also a big difference as TulaneTs<lb />pressure defense forced 11 ECU<lb />turnovers, compared to TulaneTs<lb />three. ECUTs offense was stifled<lb />once again early in the contest,<lb />failing to get any inside penetra-<lb />tion and consistent outside play<lb />from its starters.<lb /><lb />ECU shot 33 percent from<lb />the field in the first half and<lb />4-10 from behind the arch, only<lb />making it to the charity stripe<lb />five times. Tulane didn't fare<lb /><lb />much better, shooting 40 percent |<lb /><lb />from the field and scoring the<lb />majority of its points in the post,<lb />connecting on only two of nine<lb /><lb />three pointers.<lb /><lb />In the second half, ECU fell<lb />down by nine but found its stride<lb />after Cory Farmer drained a<lb />three-pointer from the right<lb />wing, beginning a 7-0 PiratesT<lb />run that would draw the lead to<lb />within four.. ,<lb /><lb />The momentum would not<lb />last long though, as the Green<lb />Wave stormed back with a 12-3<lb />run that included three straight<lb />dunks from a possessed Gomez,<lb />and capped off by a rim-shaking<lb />alley-oop dunk by Stith that all<lb />but took the wind out of the sales<lb />for a tired Pirate defense. Legan<lb />answered with a three pointer<lb />that drew the lead within ten but<lb />ECU would fail to get any closer<lb />for the night.<lb /><lb />Tulane continued to wear<lb />down ECUTs undersized lineup<lb /><lb />.and stretched the lead to 18<lb /><lb />points with just six minutes to<lb />play. Two late field goals from<lb />Jenkins were not enough to<lb />bring the Pirates within striking<lb />distance and the Pirates fell to<lb />the visiting Green Wave, 72-56.<lb /><lb />In a lopsided second half,<lb />Tulane outperformed ECU in<lb />every offensive category.
