Dr. Dudley Flood, a retired<lb /><lb />lina Department of Public Instruction, was the keynote<lb />speaker for the event.<lb /><lb />The.event was.in.collaboration withthe Greenville...<lb /><lb />Chamber of Commerce.<lb /><lb />Shortly after the breakfast began, students began<lb />gathering for registration for the annual MLK Day<lb />Challenge at 8:15 a.m., sponsored by the Volunteer and<lb />Service Learning Center.<lb /><lb />The sponsors of the event seemed pleased with the turn-<lb />out of students who participated on their own merit and the<lb />number of student organizations that got involved.<lb /><lb />We had 142 students participating from groups<lb />such as Alpha Phi Alpha, NAACP, Ladies Elite, Kappa<lb />Alpha Psi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Black Student Nursing<lb />Association, Black Student Union, Delta Sigma Theta,<lb />Sigma Gamma Rho, Omega Psi Phi, the Centers FOCUS<lb />program, Zeta Phi Beta, who acted as site leaders for<lb />us, and a large number of students with no organiza-<lb />tion affiliation,? said Shawn Moore, community partner<lb />coordinator.<lb /><lb />The challenge compels students to work with indi- -<lb /><lb />viduals and groups that they normally wouldnt have<lb />the chance to interact with by Bag i community<lb />service together.<lb /><lb />The MLK Day Challenge is an event that lends itself<lb /><lb />to working with people outside your circle. This year<lb /><lb />a number of participants took the opportunity to work |<lb /><lb />with students that were not from their own organiza-<lb />tion, Moore said.<lb /><lb />The event aims to continue the collaboration of dif-<lb />ferent groups, even after the challenge is over.<lb /><lb />The Center staff hopes this trend will continue<lb />and that students will open themselves to meeting new<lb />people while serving in the community during this<lb />event, said Moore.<lb /><lb />A candlelight vigil and march at 5:30 p.m. at the<lb />bottom of College Hill followed the MLK Day Chal-<lb />lenge.<lb /><lb />The march also served the purpose of bringing indi-<lb /><lb />viduals together to reflect the goals of Dr. King.<lb /><lb />The participation of these diverse students rein-<lb />forced the efforts of Dr. King. The etudents recognized<lb />aneed for unifying and working towards acceptance and<lb />tolerance for all,? said Ameena Mohyuddin, assistant<lb />director of student activities and major events.<lb /><lb />Despite the extremely cold weather, a large number<lb />of people still decided to participate in the march.<lb /><lb />About 250 participants marched down college hill<lb />and 10th St. Although the weather was terrible, by the<lb />turnout it seems that people did not let that deter them<lb />from coming together as a community,? Mohyuddin<lb />Said.<lb /><lb />The events eloded with Celebrating Dr. King<lb />Through Words, Songs, and Storytelling? at 7 p.m. in<lb />Wright Auditorium. 7<lb /><lb />Dr. Shirley Carraway, retired superintendent of<lb />Orange County Schools and ECU alumna, was the<lb />keynote speaker.<lb /><lb />Not all of the events that paid tribute to Dr. King<lb />took place on Monday. Some of the events began as<lb />early as Jan.17.<lb /><lb />Beyond Beats &amp; Rhymes: Hip-Hop and Manhood,?<lb />was shown in Hendrix Theater of Mendenhall Student<lb />Center on Thursday at 7 p.m.<lb /><lb />While most may assume that the movie was just<lb /><lb />exposing different issues in the music genre, the movie<lb />also had ties to Dr. Kings efforts to eliminate discrimi-<lb />nation.<lb /><lb />The film focused on issues of civil rights that even<lb />in todays society we are challenged with: homophobia,<lb />sexism, etc. It reminds us that although we have over-<lb />come significant challenges, that the struggle isnt over,?<lb />Mohyuddin sald.<lb /><lb />We still deal with issues of ethnicity, religion, etc.<lb />and in order to work through these, we all need to unite<lb />and recognize the need for a collective understanding<lb />and commitment to accepting one another.?<lb /><lb />Some of the people that played a significant role in<lb />organizing these events were David Dennard, associ-<lb />ate professor of history and MLK day committee chair,<lb />Lathan Turner, assistant vice chancellor for Intercultural<lb />Student Affairs, Toya Jacobs, associate director of the<lb />Intercultural Student Affairs, and Louise Toppin in the<lb />School of Music, among a few others.<lb /><lb />This writer may be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Mendenhall Student Center set to under<lb /><lb />$26 million reconstruction starting this s<lb /><lb />Same services will be offered<lb /><lb />YAZID FINN<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The Mendenhall Student Center (MSC)<lb />will begin an estimated 24-month reconstruc-<lb />tion period this May.<lb /><lb />The student initiative has been in the pro-<lb />cess of review for over five years, and was only<lb />given the green light this past year.<lb /><lb />According to Corey King, assistant vice<lb />chancellor of student experiences, the project<lb />is costing well over $26 million.<lb /><lb />Students voiced concern in regards to the<lb />lack of space in Mendenhall,? Spivey said.<lb /><lb />Inadequate staff training was a significant<lb />issue, said Dee Bowling, interim director for<lb />student financial aid.<lb /><lb />Training has been offered to staff and will<lb />continue to be as part of financial aids process<lb />improvement plans.?<lb /><lb />Staff training began in November and will<lb />continue through June, alongside a newly devel-<lb />oped regular training schedule.<lb /><lb />The University brought Banner consul-<lb />tants on site to facilitate training for staff,?<lb />said Bowling.<lb /><lb />Ms. Spivey has planned additional training<lb />for staff through June 2008. She is also imple-<lb />menting an annual training schedule which will<lb />incorporate changes in systems procedures as<lb />they occur as well as any changes in federal/state<lb />guidelines,? Bowling said. |<lb /><lb />Students questions and concerns seemed to<lb />be addressed sooner than in the past.<lb /><lb />Wait times for students needing to speak<lb /><lb />with staff in the financial aid office have been<lb />reduced, so lines did not form like in the fall<lb />that started upstairs in financial aid and ended<lb />downstairs in the hallway near the One Card ©<lb />Office,? Bowling said.<lb /><lb />So far this semester the line has not reached<lb />the bottom of the stairs in the Financial Aid<lb />Building, according to Bailey.<lb /><lb />One-reason for that improvement was that<lb />there was consistently more staff to assist stu-<lb />dents than last semester. ,<lb /><lb />Some grants that were delayed in process-<lb />ing are expected to be disbursed by the end of.<lb />this week.<lb /><lb />We are continuing to disburse state grants<lb />and loans as they are approved,? Bailey said.<lb /><lb />Continuing to recognize problems areas in<lb />the aid process will continue to be a goal for the<lb />financial aid office.<lb /><lb />We will identify weak areas and make<lb />changes as needed to better service our students,?<lb />said Spivey.<lb /><lb />This is a process that will take place every<lb />new fiscal year. Our review starts in December<lb />and will continue through February.?<lb /><lb />Students can also help make the financial aid<lb />distribution process easier. Many students failure<lb />of accepting financial aid online was one of the<lb />main problems that the financial aid office was<lb />forced to help with.<lb /><lb />Students should be encouraged to make sure<lb />that they renew their FAFSA,? Bailey said. There<lb />is not a deadline for submitting a FAFSA, but it<lb />should be done as soon as possible.<lb /><lb />Last year more than 15,000 ECU students<lb />received a total of about $148 million. That total<lb />included loans, grants and scholarships. About<lb />21,000 students received financial aid this year.<lb /><lb />This writer may be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb /></p>

It has a beautiful<lb />woman on the cover, articles on respectful<lb />and modern chivalry, an interview with a<lb />hilarious comedienne, and almost all the<lb />advertisements feature women dressed in a<lb />classy-not-trashy way.<lb /><lb />Guess what? Im reading a mens maga-<lb />zine. I know, I know. Mens magazines are<lb />all built to objectify women, make men into<lb />drooling idiot masses and just push back<lb />feminism to the 1940s, right? Well, Ive got<lb />a question for you: opened up a Cosmopolitan,<lb />lately?<lb /><lb />Cosmopolitan advertises itself as The #1<lb />Womens Magazine? and Ive seen enough of<lb /><lb />them poking out of binders, framed in bath- -<lb /><lb />rooms at house parties and strewn over coffee<lb />tables and tanning salon floors to believe that<lb />theyre right. I see more girls reading Cosmo<lb />on a weekly basis than any other magazine in<lb />circulation, and that makes me very sad.<lb /><lb />Ever taken a good look at whats inside<lb />Cosmo lately? Articles for women hunting?<lb />for a man, calling another woman skanky?<lb />for having a bad hair day and the most insipid<lb />articles Ive ever read. I dare you to find a<lb />piece in Cosmo that isnt about fashion, sex, or<lb />over-the-top danger stories about how YOU<lb />will be raped TOMMOROW if you don't<lb />prepare yourself because ALL men want to<lb />RAPE you. Its enough to make any woman<lb />who considers herself a feminist want to gag.<lb />Is this how women see themselves? Is this<lb />how women want to see themselves?<lb /><lb />I guess it is, because about five years<lb />back there was a great little womens maga-<lb />zine called Jane. Jane stressed putting your<lb />personal health above how you look, being<lb />politically engaged and making the most of<lb />your life at all times. Guess what happened?<lb />It sold horribly. Horribly, that is, until three<lb />years ago when it changed format and became<lb />a Cosmopolitan clone. Business has improved<lb />ever since, and its now one of those popular<lb />impulse-buy magazines we see at the check-<lb />out. |<lb /><lb />So, mens magazines stress how intelli-<lb />gent and awesome women are while womens<lb />magazines stress how important sex and eye<lb />shadow are. What could this<lb />possibly be? Its time for those ever-so-famous<lb />New Years resolutions we set at the beginning<lb />of each year.<lb /><lb />But how long will we continue with this<lb />buzz? Not too long for the majority of us. Many<lb />have the best intentions of losing ten pounds by<lb />spring break (for that killer bathing suit bod, of<lb />course), or of really motivating themselves to go<lb />to the gym five times a week ... but this slowly but<lb /><lb />_ surely weakens as the year progresses.<lb /><lb />So, why do these good intentions of ours fade<lb />so quickly? Lets be real; it is the month of Janu-<lb />ary. Its bitter cold outside, and we dont often<lb />have the most beautiful weather either (should I<lb />mention dreadful rain instead of pretty snow?).<lb />Therefore, lack of motivation is quite common,<lb />and staying in our cozy room or apartment<lb />sounds a lot better. Its just too much effort to<lb />simply change into fitness clothes and travel to<lb />the gym when we are nice and warm inside.<lb /><lb />Many of us often set unrealistic goals for<lb />ourselves or expect to achieve our goal in a short<lb />period of time. Some examples include quitting<lb />smoking, losing 20 pounds, saving money, or even<lb />studying during the time of a rerun episode of<lb />Greys Anatomy? (thanks to the writers strike,<lb />the winter is even longer now!). ;<lb /><lb />January 1° has come to symbolize starting a<lb />fresh and exciting year and setting our personal<lb />goals. Goals such as losing 20 pounds or saving<lb />money obviously take more than one day, but that<lb />date may imply that it needs to be done then and<lb /><lb />_now! We often give up and slowly acquire our old<lb />habits in a matter of weeks due to frustration and<lb />lack of progress.<lb /><lb />How can we keep our intentions going for<lb />more than a week? You simply need motivation<lb />from others and yourself to accomplish your<lb />individual goals for the year. It is important to<lb />have outside sources, as well as yourself, pushing<lb />you each and every day to really achieve what<lb />you want.<lb /><lb />Writing your goals down and involving a<lb />friend in your goals would be a very helpful tactic,<lb />because then it is surrounding you at all times.<lb />Dont forget to reward yourself at the end of the |<lb /><lb />_ week with something pleasurable or relaxing; it<lb />will inspire you to keep on moving.<lb /><lb />So, this year make a difference and keep your<lb />New Years resolution. You will be pleasantly<lb />surprised with your outcome, and maybe start a<lb />new habit for yourself every year!<lb /><lb />Sources for this article include<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Kimberly Bellamy " J.D. Wake Forest (9-4)<lb /><lb />ine Memon. Deacons<lb />backed up their surprising 11-<lb />3 2006 season with another<lb />solid year in 2007. I know that<lb />Clemson beat Wake Forest<lb />44-10 this season, but you<lb /><lb />have to fost at the whole body |<lb /><lb />of work, not just one game.<lb />Unlike Clemson, all four of |<lb />Wake Forests non-conference<lb /><lb />_ games were against Division<lb /><lb />I-A teams, and the Deacons<lb />won three of them. Three of<lb />the Deacons four losses came<lb />against teams that were ranked<lb />at the time, and the fourth was<lb />the season-opener at Boston<lb />College, which was unranked<lb />at the time. The Demon Dea-<lb />cons won the 2007 Meineke<lb /><lb />~Car Care Bowl in impressive<lb /><lb />fashion, dominating the second<lb />half en route to a 24-10 vic-<lb />tory over No. 25 Connecticut,<lb />which vaults Wake Forest past<lb />Clemson and into the top spot<lb />of the Carolinas poll.<lb /><lb />2. Clemson (9-4)<lb /><lb />Clemson finishes as the<lb />second best team in the Caro-<lb />linas due to its lack of quality "<lb />wins. The Tigers only had only<lb />one win over a team that was<lb />ranked at the time, and that<lb /><lb />was a season-opening 24-18<lb />win over an overrated Florida<lb />State team. Clemson lost two of<lb />its last three games, including<lb />its bowl game"a 23-20 loss<lb />to Auburn in the Chick-fil-<lb />A Bowl. A win in that game<lb />would have definitely made<lb />Clemson the best team in the<lb />Carolinas, but the lack ofa real<lb />quality win drops them to the<lb />runner-up ae<lb /><lb />3. ECU (8-5<lb /><lb />Skip Holtz did one of the<lb />best.coaching Jobs of his career<lb />this fall. Holtz, despite losing<lb />one of the best quarterback-wide<lb />receiver duos in school history,<lb />displayed his offensive expertise<lb />by turning Chris Johnson into a<lb />national superstar and guiding<lb />the Pirates to multiple shoot-<lb />out wins in ECUs best season<lb />since 2000. ECU capped the<lb />memorable 2007 season with a<lb />surprising 41-38 win over No.<lb />24 Boise State. Johnson had a<lb />NCAA bowl-record 408 all-<lb /><lb />purpose yards and Ben Hartman<lb />kicked a game-winning 34-yard<lb />field goal that gave ECU the<lb />win and vaulted the Pirates onto<lb />the national scene. The Pirates<lb />went 1-1 against teams from the<lb />Carolinas, with a 34-31 win over<lb />North Carolina on Sept. 8 anda<lb />34-20 loss to N.C. State on Oct.<lb />20. Both games were played in<lb />Greenville. " 7<lb /><lb />4. South Carolina (6-6)<lb /><lb />Steve Spurriers Gamecocks<lb />won six games this year, but did<lb />not earn a bowl berth. What<lb />South Carolina did do is play one<lb />of the toughest schedules in the<lb />nation however, including games<lb />with each of the top-two teams<lb />from the final AP poll. USC won<lb />at Georgia, which finished the<lb />season No. 2 in the nation, and<lb />lost to eventual national cham-<lb />pion LSU two weeks later, early<lb />in the season. The Gamecocks<lb />didnt finish strong at all after<lb />starting the season 6-1, losing<lb />their final five games by an aver-<lb /><lb />age of almost 10 points.<lb /><lb />5. N.C. State (5-7)<lb /><lb />The Wolfpack edges out<lb />Appalachian State for the final<lb />spot in the rankings, despite<lb />the Mountaineers winning the<lb />Division I-AA National Cham-<lb />pionship for the third-straight<lb />year and somehow receiving five<lb />votes in the Division I-A final<lb />AP Top 25 poll. The reasoning<lb /><lb />for that decision is because of the<lb /><lb />one common opponent between<lb />the two, Wofford. N.C. State<lb />beat Wofford, 38-17, while ASU<lb />lost to Wofford, 42-31, in the<lb />regular season. After a rough<lb />1-5 start to the Tom OBrien<lb />era, N.C. State won four of its<lb />last six, including wins at EGU<lb />and Miami, and a win over No.<lb />15 Virginia.
