<lb />Won<lb /><lb />I declare,<lb /><lb />Independents!<lb /><lb />No choices out of many<lb /><lb />J.D. LEWIS<lb />OPINION EDITOR<lb /><lb />Well ... my Democratic candidate, Bill<lb />Richardson, has dropped out of the 2008<lb />Presidential race. My Republican candidate,<lb />Rudy Giuliani, was once the national front-<lb />runner but appears to be on the fast track to<lb />becoming an also ran.? ITm an Independent,<lb />but those two stood out to me as the best<lb />- their parties had to offer. Now whom will<lb />I vote for? ,<lb /><lb />New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg<lb />is rumored to be considering an Indepen-<lb />dent Presidential bid. Great. The last thing<lb />this race needs is another ego. But heTs an<lb />Independent, you're thinking, shouldn't I be<lb />happy? Bloomberg was a lifelong Democrat<lb />until he switched to the Republican Party to<lb />run for mayor, and then, as soon as his name<lb />was mentioned in the same breath as running<lb />for President, he changed his affiliation to<lb />independent ... before his term as mayor has<lb />even ended. Lie<lb /><lb />Do true independents want to vote for a<lb />candidate when even the candidate doesnTt<lb />know where the hell he stands? Besides,<lb />the Democratic and Republican Parties,<lb />unfortunately, are so entrenched that theyT 11<lb />continue to shut out independents and third<lb />parties, and Presidents will come from one<lb />of the two for the foreseeable future. The<lb />best thing we can do is to find a candidate<lb />in each major party that comes the closest<lb />to sharing our views.<lb /><lb />Right now, ITm starting to take a closer<lb />look at Barack Obama on the Democratic<lb />side, and I'd cast a ballot for Satan before ITd<lb />vote for Hillary Clinton. At least you know<lb />where he stands.<lb /><lb />The Republican side is a little more per-<lb />plexing. ITve never been a big John McCain<lb />fan, but I guess ITll have to go with him.<lb />I like that Mitt Romney has a business<lb />background, but I have a hard time getting<lb />past the fact that heTs from Massachusetts.<lb />I mean ... thereTs just something unsettling<lb />about the fact that he appealed to the same<lb />voters as Ted Kennedy and John Kerry. And<lb />while I donTt think Mike Huckabee will ever<lb />be elected President, heTd be a shoo-in for a<lb />Gomer Pyle look-alike contest. ~<lb /><lb />On the home front, we have the races for<lb />Governor of North Carolina and U.S. Sena-<lb />tor to look forward to.<lb /><lb />In the Democratic race for governor,<lb />we have Lt. Gov. Bev Perdue, who is about<lb />as exciting as watching paint dry, and<lb />Treasurer Richard Moore, who is about as<lb />exciting as Bev Perdue. The Republicans<lb />are offering NC Sen. Fred Smith, former NC<lb />Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr, Salisbury<lb />attorney Bill Graham, and maybe Charlotte<lb />Mayor Pat McCrory. Collectively, theyTre<lb />about as exciting as Richard Moore.<lb /><lb />~That leaves the Libertarian candidate,<lb />Duke political science professor Mike<lb />Munger, who looks like a cross between He-<lb />Man and the Incredible Hulk. ThatTs a little<lb />better than their 2004 U.S. Senate candidate,<lb />who looked fresh off a tour with ZZ Top: I<lb />support a lot of whatTs in the Libertarian<lb />Party platform, but I just canTt bring myself<lb />to vote for a cartoon. Given the partyTs track<lb />record, few can. I have nothing to look for-<lb />ward to in this election.<lb /><lb />The reelection of Elizabeth Dole to the:<lb /><lb />U.S. Senate is most likely a done deal thanks<lb />to the stellar crop of candidates the Demo-<lb />crats have thrown her way. After failing<lb />to attract the likes of Mike Easley or Jim<lb />Hunt, the party tried to recruit NC Sen. Kay<lb />Hagan, but she declined to run. Then Chapel<lb />Hill investment banker Jim Neal tossed his<lb />hat into the ring. As soon as he announced<lb />that heTs gay, Hagan jumped into the fray, not<lb />because of NealTs homosexuality and elect-<lb />ability in a relatively conservative state, but<lb />to be a voice against the war in Iraq. Yeah,<lb />and ITm Aunt Bee.<lb /><lb />Why not persuade John Edwards to<lb />abandon his Presidential bid and run for the<lb />Senate again? ItTs not like he did anything<lb />for North Carolina the first time around, but<lb />there are plenty of poor people here that he<lb /><lb />and his $400 haircut could relate to. Besides,<lb /><lb />after one more term in the Senate he might<lb />actually be qualified to run for President.T<lb /><lb />It appears all the parties were scraping.<lb /><lb />the bottom of the barrel this election cycle,<lb />and theyTre going to have to do a lot to con-<lb />vince me to come. over to their camps.<lb /><lb />We've got a long way.to go to get to<lb />November.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />{ Let the Good Times Roll! \<lb /><lb />THURSDAY JANUARY 17, 2008<lb /><lb />PAGE A5<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />The automatic toilets on the first floor of<lb />Austin are HAUNTED!<lb /><lb />FIRE!<lb /><lb />The ~CorpsT<lb />of the matter<lb /><lb />Not always Semper Fi<lb /><lb />ELISE PHILLIPS<lb />FEATURES EDITOR<lb /><lb />I grew up in a Marine town.<lb /><lb />Yes, anyone who knows anything about<lb />the Marine Corps knows that itTis a transi-<lb />tory business that keeps men and women<lb />away from their families and makes kids<lb />attend ten different schools before they<lb />graduate high school.<lb /><lb />ThereTs a stereotype that all 20-some-<lb />thing-year-old Marines are sex-hungry and<lb />on the prowl for underage girls (which, in<lb />my experience, is true of very few service-<lb />men). |<lb />But the women and men who serve in the<lb />Marine Corps are not all bad people.<lb /><lb />They have been called heroes by many<lb /><lb />media outlets, and most people in the U.S.<lb />(despite their political party affiliation)<lb />agree that the Marines and other servicemen<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. ThatTs right, class has been<lb />in session for less than a week and I am already<lb />beginning to crack under the pressure.<lb /><lb />My body hasnTt been able to grasp the fact that<lb />I can no longer go to bed around 4 a.m. and sleep<lb />until 2 p.m. Waking up at 6:30 a.m. this morning<lb />nearly killed me. In fact as I type this letter I may<lb />pass out from sheer exhaustion.<lb /><lb />ITm not sure if this is just a syndrome that I<lb />have developed or if itTs universal among college<lb />students, but venturing back to campus after a<lb />nearly a month break has been a nightmare.<lb /><lb />Not only is waking up before noon absolutely<lb />horrifying, but walking across campus in the freezing cold<lb />is downright dreadful. As I partake in my brisk hike across<lb />campus each morning my eyes water, my body shivers<lb />from the wind gusts and my lips have begun to crack.<lb /><lb />After strolling across campus for what seems<lb />like hours, arriving at the bookstore to purchase<lb />my textbooks makes me cringe in disbelief at just<lb />how much money I am forced to part with.<lb /><lb />Thankfully this is the last semester that I<lb /><lb />will ever have to endure the painstaking chore of<lb /><lb />returning to class after winter break only to suffer<lb />through months of re-adjustment.<lb />Gone are the days of dancing all night and<lb /><lb />Sleeping all day, the days of lazing in my bed<lb /><lb />watching Entourage for hours on end and the days<lb /><lb />_of wearing nothing but pajamas the entire day.<lb /><lb />For me, itTs back to reality. My reality includes<lb /><lb />20 semester hours of class, a part-time job at<lb /><lb />a local retail store and spending every waking<lb />moment of my life outside of class on Monday and<lb />Wednesday down in the newsroom.<lb /><lb />But this letter isnTt about me, itTs about you.<lb />ThatTs right..you. This is my desperate cry for<lb />help. The stress of the semester isnTt only getting<lb />to me, it got to the entire East Carolinian staff,<lb />which means many have decided to part ways.<lb /><lb />For those of you that enjoy writing, copy<lb />editing or photography I have the perfect job for<lb />you. Stop by The East Carolinian newsroom on<lb />Third Street and fill out an application.<lb /><lb />Not only will you land a job that you actually enjoy<lb />doing, but you'll also meet new people, gain networking<lb />opportunities and bulk up your resume. Not a bad deal.eh?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />editor@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />there are other questions that need to be<lb />considered about the institution.<lb /><lb />ThereTs a stereotype that people join the<lb />Corps for a way out? of bad circumstances<lb />(which, in my experience, is true of a lot of<lb />servicemen).<lb /><lb />DonTt have any money? Join the Marine<lb />Corps. DonTt have a job? Join the Marine<lb />Corps. Need health insurance? Join the<lb />Marine Corps. Want benefits that donTt<lb />compare to most jobs in the U.S.? Join the<lb />Marine Corps. You get my drift.<lb /><lb />_ And that leads me to my question: Are<lb />they screening individuals who join the<lb />Corps adequately?<lb /><lb />This week, in my hometown of Jackson-<lb />ville, NC, a female Marine was murdered.<lb />Her body was burned, and police suspect<lb />she was raped and struggled with her mur-<lb />derer violently before being torched in the<lb />backyard of a home on the Camp Lejeune<lb />Marine Corps Base. Sadly, she was pregnant.<lb />Even worse, the person who killed her was<lb />the father of her child. Worst part of all,<lb />he fathered that child by raping the woman<lb />months before.<lb /><lb />The man was married, and he had been.<lb />bragging at work for months that his wife<lb />was pregnant (which sheTs not). Cesar<lb /><lb />Armando Laurean fled his home after he<lb />murdered his unborn child and a 20-year-old<lb />female Marine.<lb /><lb />Was Laurean a product of the way out?<lb />Marine stereotype? And if he was, why<lb />was he allowed to join the Corps? Is the<lb />United States Marine Corps so desperate<lb />for members that they admit murderers and<lb />rapists? Are the people who are defending<lb />our country being checked for mental illness,<lb />past criminal records, etc., etc.?<lb /><lb />I honestly have no idea about how the<lb />Marine Corps checks out its soldiers, but I<lb />do know that in order to join, there are only<lb />a few simple processes: fill out paperwork,<lb />go to boot camp ... and bam! Yourein. That<lb />makes me a little nervous.<lb /><lb />I'm not saying that everyone in the<lb />Marine Corps is a rapist or a cold-blooded<lb />killer. What I am saying is that the Corps<lb />could do a better job of screening who they<lb />allow to join the service and whom they<lb />donTt.<lb /><lb />In the meantime, IT I] just igutT a big Oo-<lb />rah for the men and women in camouflage<lb />and hope that the stereotypes are just that:<lb />stereotypes.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Kimberly Bellamy J.D. <lb />THURSDAY JANUARY 17, 2008<lb /><lb />NFL Champ:<lb /><lb />AP<lb /><lb />JARED JACKSON "<lb />ASST. SPORTS EDITOR<lb /><lb />NFC<lb /><lb />The storyline: Brett Favre<lb />and the Green Bay Packers [14-<lb /><lb />3] look to stake claim to the.<lb /><lb />NFC crown and earn a Super<lb />Bowl berth this Sunday when<lb /><lb />the New York Giants [12-6]<lb /><lb />travel to Lambeau Field to<lb />compete in a contest featuring<lb />two of the NFLss most surpris-<lb />ing teams. :<lb /><lb />ITm just excited about<lb />having the game here at Lam-<lb />beau Field,? McCarthy told the<lb />Associated Press. To have the<lb />NFC Championship Game at<lb />Lambeau Field is just wonder-<lb />ful for the Green Bay com-<lb />munity, for our fans, especially<lb />after our fansT performance<lb />(last Saturday). Just to bring<lb />the game here is really the<lb />excitement that we're all feeling<lb />right now.?<lb /><lb />Green Bay, fresh off a 42-<lb />20 dismantling of the Seattle<lb /><lb />Seahawks, now has its sights set<lb /><lb />on the Giants, who knocked off<lb />the top-seeded Dallas Cowboys,<lb />21-17, this past Sunday to earn a<lb />date against the Packers.<lb /><lb />The matchup, just like the<lb />AFC title game, is a rematch<lb /><lb />Packers quarterback Brett Favre celebrates last week,<lb /><lb />out. The Packers steam-<lb /><lb />of a regular season blow-<lb /><lb />rolled the Giants, 35-13, in the<lb />week-two meeting at Giants<lb />Stadium. |<lb /><lb />But now the Giants,<lb />behind the fantastic play of<lb />Eli Manning, have gained<lb />a new confidence that was<lb />lacking in the earlier weeks<lb />of the regular season.<lb /><lb />The past two weeks, heTs<lb />played well,? GiantsT wide<lb />receiver Plaxico Burress told<lb />NFL.com when asked about<lb />Manning. HeTs directed our<lb />offense. HeTs executed our<lb />passing game. HeTs put us in<lb />good situations. HeTs playing<lb />with a lot of confidence. As<lb />long as that continues, we'll be<lb />going to Arizona.?<lb /><lb />Manning, who was 12-of-18<lb />for 163 and two touchdowns<lb />against Dallas, has yet to throw<lb />an interception this postseason.<lb />This has been the biggest key in<lb />the GiantsT miraculous run.<lb /><lb />On the flip side, after suf-<lb />fering two of his worst seasons,<lb />Favre"at 38-years young"has<lb /><lb />~reasserted himself as one of the<lb /><lb />gameTs best quarterbacks.<lb />Against the Seahawks, he<lb /><lb />was 18-of-23 for 173 yards<lb /><lb />and three touchdowns. Not<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />too shabby for someone most<lb />players joke around as being a<lb />senior citizen.<lb /><lb />Key to the game: The key<lb />for SundayTs contest will of<lb />course be quarterback play as<lb />each Manning and Favre have<lb />been known to be interception<lb />prone. Each defense must create<lb />pressure and force the oppos-<lb />ing quarterback into making a<lb />costly turnover.<lb /><lb />The pick: With the wind<lb />chill forecasted to be negative<lb />13 degrees at kickoff, look for<lb />the Packers to edge out the<lb />Giants 24-21 and earn their<lb />first Super Bowl berth in 10<lb />years.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />1ons<lb /><lb />JARED JACKSON<lb />ASST. SPORTS EDITOR<lb /><lb />AFC<lb /><lb />The storyline: The San<lb />Diego Chargers [13-5] are the<lb />AFCTs last hope and most likely<lb />the last true competition that the<lb />New England Patriots [17-0]<lb />will face in their march toward<lb />history.<lb /><lb />Earlier in the season when<lb />these two teams met, the Patri-<lb />ots were in the midst of the<lb />infamous Spygate? scandal and<lb />San Diego was not playing very<lb />good football.<lb /><lb />The end result was a 38-14<lb />New England beat down behind<lb />the pass and catch combo of Tom<lb />Brady and Randy Moss to prove<lb />that the Pats didn't need to use<lb />banned video camera footage to<lb />obtain an inside advantage.<lb /><lb />The two teams also meet last<lb />season in the divisional round of<lb />the playoffs. San Diego seemed<lb />to have the contest won leading<lb />21-13 around the midway point<lb />of the fourth quarter until free<lb />safety Marlon McCree inter-<lb /><lb />cepted a Brady pass and made_<lb /><lb />a critical error in trying to run<lb />back the pick and fumbled. This<lb />lead to a PatriotsT touchdown and<lb />tying two-point conversion, and<lb /><lb />Tom Brady will try to keep the Patriots u<lb /><lb />eventually New England pulled<lb />out the victory with a 31-yard<lb />field goal with 1:10 remaining.<lb /><lb />The real fireworks came at<lb />the games conclusion however,<lb />as the Patriots upset many of the<lb />Chargers players for imitating<lb />their linebackerTs celebratory<lb />dance.<lb /><lb />Yes, I was upset, very upset,?<lb />NFL leading rusher LaDainian<lb />Tomlinson told the Associated<lb />Press after the game last season.<lb />When you go in the middle of<lb />our field and start doing the dance<lb />Shawne Merriman is known for,<lb /><lb />_ thatTs disrespectful to me. They<lb /><lb />showed no class at all, absolutely<lb />no class, and maybe it comes from<lb />their head coach.? ,<lb /><lb />Now a year later after the bad<lb />blood has had time to boil, the<lb />Chargers, who started the season<lb />1-3, could give the Patriots arun<lb />for their money come Sunday.<lb />But after some key injuries to<lb />some of their best players, New<lb />England is left heavily favored.<lb /><lb />While Tomlinson should be<lb />able to play after a knee injury,<lb />starting quarterback Philip<lb />Rivers is listed as questionable.<lb /><lb />Rivers injured his medial col-<lb />lateral ligament after he landed<lb />awkwardly moments after com-<lb />pleting a 56-yard screen pass to<lb /><lb />PAGE A7<lb /><lb />hip weekend<lb /><lb />AP<lb /><lb />ndefeated this Sunday.<lb /><lb />Darren Sprolesfor a touchdown<lb />on the final play of the third<lb />quarter in the ChargersT stunning<lb /><lb />28-24 upset of the Indianapolis<lb /><lb />Colts.this past Sunday.<lb /><lb />Right now, itTs probably ques-<lb />tionable in terms of playing in<lb />the game, but heTs got a chance,?<lb />Turner told the AP on Monday.<lb />That will be a day-to-day thing<lb />and we'll monitor it as the week<lb />goes on.?<lb /><lb />Rivers, who was 14-of-19 last<lb />week against the Colts for 264<lb />yards and three touchdowns, is<lb />perhaps the most critical part of<lb />the Chargers talented offense. If<lb />he is unable to suit up then San<lb />Diego has simply no chance of<lb />knocking off perhaps the best team<lb />of all time.<lb /><lb />Key to the game: Obvi-<lb />ously, the main key for the<lb />Chargers will be the overall<lb />health of the offense with Tom-<lb />linson, Rivers and tight end<lb />Antonio Gates all suffering from<lb />injuries. For the Patriots, all they<lb />will need to do is stick to their<lb />plan that got them to 17-0 and<lb />keep the pedal to the metal.<lb /><lb />The Pick: I see the Patriots<lb />winning this one rather easily,<lb />41-17.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Greenville,<lb /><lb />(252) 757-1015<lb /><lb />;.cbeech.con<lb /><lb /></p>

ECU<lb /><lb />put up a respectable shooting:<lb /><lb />performance in the first half,<lb />shooting 45 percent from the<lb />field while hitting 5-10 three<lb />pointers. Marshall won the<lb />turnover battle though, forc-<lb />ing ECU to commit nine turn-<lb />overs while only committing<lb />four of its own.<lb /><lb />Both teams came out firing<lb /><lb />in the second frame as Matt<lb />Walls buried a three-pointer<lb />from the left corner, only to<lb />be answered by a Hinnant<lb />trey that brought the lead back<lb />within two.
