The German director easily casts a<lb />shadow over Hollywood with every stunning film<lb />he produces and directs. Uwe Boll is a breed all his<lb />own, with, in my opinion, only the notable director<lb />Michael Bay coming close with his groundbreak-<lb />ing films.<lb /><lb />Just look at the award-winning movies Boll<lb />has under his belt: House of the Dead, Alone in the<lb />Dark and BloodRayne. Pretty much the greatest<lb />films of their respective years, beating out crap<lb />like the pretentious Good Night, And Good Luck or<lb />the fluke Mystic River. Why, when Alone in the Dark<lb />and BloodRayne were announced to be coming out<lb />in the same year, my head nearly exploded from<lb />the news? It was almost too much Boll for anyone<lb />to handle in thesame year ... almost.<lb /><lb />Some may try to argue that Uwe Boll is a<lb />modern-day Ed Wood, comparing the legend-<lb />ary German director to some mid-20'-century<lb />- American hack. Please. Just look at the source<lb />material of the two directors. Ed Woods films<lb />were destined to fail the moment he began typing.<lb />Uwe Boll takes a different path. Uwe Boll probes<lb />the human psyche. Boll keeps his ear to the ground<lb />of modern society and his eyes open for what he<lb />knows his audience wants. This of course entails<lb />videogames, and lots of them. I mean, why pay 50<lb />bucks to play something for 30 hours when you<lb />can easily drop 10 dollars and have someone play<lb />it for you in less than two? It does not make sense<lb />any other way! ,<lb /><lb />The profits that Boll makes per film speak for<lb /><lb />themselves. Just like The Blair Witch Project and<lb />the original Saw, the German director is making<lb />nearly ten-to-one on his money for every film he<lb />fathoms into existence. With every poorly con-<lb />structed:video game that hits the market, Boll is<lb /><lb />there to take that game off the shelves and adapt it -<lb /><lb />to the big screen, knowing full well his $500,000<lb />will net over $5 million in box office revenues.<lb /><lb />I would have dusted off the sleeping bag and<lb />camped outside a theater for In the Name of the<lb />King: A Dungeon Siege Tale, that released this past<lb />Friday, if I had not already promised my significant<lb />other a relaxing Blockbuster night. It is no worries,<lb />however, as I promised myself to have my priori-<lb />ties in order for Bolls next release. I mean, who<lb />needs chicks when you have everything a guy could<lb />possibly want: poor dialog, senseless violence, and<lb />a plot that is harder to follow than a Republican<lb />presidential debate.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Opinions are<lb />like airheads.<lb /><lb />Say what?<lb /><lb />~J.D. Its a<lb /><lb />win-win situation!<lb /><lb />TY. addicts should find a new hobby<lb /><lb />| want Heroes back,<lb /><lb />but Im on the writers side<lb /><lb />_ JESSICA DUNLOW ~<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />I think it would be super cool to be a<lb />television writer. They get to create all<lb />the amazing shows we watch and become<lb />addicted to. You know that deep down you<lb />cannot focus on day-to-day life without<lb />having your weekly dose of Greys Anat-<lb /><lb />omy, Heroes, John Stewart or Family<lb /><lb />+ 66<lb /><lb />Guy. Yes, there is that underlying motiva-<lb /><lb />tion to promote the writers cause because we<lb />so desperately need some sort of entertain-<lb />ment other than booze and homework.<lb /><lb />However,,what is causing the writers<lb />strike? It is important to understand why<lb />they are picketing the studios, because it<lb />inherently affects us all. According to the<lb />Writers Guild of America, the studios are<lb />depriving the writers of these hit television<lb />shows, along with those of talk shows and<lb />late night programs, of their proper com-<lb />pensation considering the rise in television<lb />DVD sales, internet promotions on iTunes<lb />and other web sources, and the networks<lb />allowing shows to be posted on studio Web<lb />sites. : 7<lb /><lb />According to recent news releases, Tina<lb />Fey (30 Rock), Tim King (Heroes), Seth<lb />McFarlane (Family Guy), Matthew Perry<lb /><lb />_ (Friends) and dozens of other actors who<lb /><lb />support writers stormed the picket lines, and<lb />unfortunately, the networks are not under-<lb />standing. Seriously? How can they not?<lb />The writers are the most imperative<lb />part of a television show. Without them,<lb /><lb />Was )<lb /><lb />there would be no witty jokes, no sappy<lb />love stories and no quirky nerds stealing<lb />the hearts of the nation. Writers work their<lb />creative minds off to provide the general<lb />public with some ounce of culture, and the<lb /><lb />~networks repay them by undercutting their<lb /><lb />genius with lacking compensation.<lb /><lb />The networks say they will not consider<lb />negotiations until the strikers return to<lb />work, whereas the picketers refuse to return<lb />without talking first. It is a game of chicken,<lb />and we would all like to see the writers win.<lb />The movie industry will not suffer because<lb />the studios have screenplays stacked up<lb />from years past, and they can choose from<lb />the scripts they already paid for. Even then,<lb />screenplay writers join the ranks and walk<lb /><lb />_ the lines. The Directors Guild of America<lb /><lb />contains numerous writers and directors<lb />walking the picket line, so it is hard to<lb /><lb />understand why they are being stubborn and<lb /><lb />refusing to talk (*cough* greed *cough*).<lb />Despite my desire to enter the television<lb />writing field, it is the ethical obligation to<lb />side with the writers because they are under-<lb />appreciated for their hard work, and.if the<lb /><lb />actors are acknowledging them, so should<lb /><lb />the rest of us.<lb />In addition, regardless of the fact that<lb /><lb />it would pave a smoother way for aspiring<lb /><lb />television writers of the future, it means<lb />our shows could enjoy full-length seasons.<lb />I dont know.about you, but if I have to be<lb />left hanging as to whether or not HRG and<lb />Claire find each other again on Heroes, I<lb />am not going to be a happy camper.<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />ketchup ...<lb /><lb />Like a lot<lb /><lb />ALEX LAROCCA<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />I dont know when it really started. I can recall<lb />when I was very young going to McDonalds and<lb />dipping my delicious french fries in that red death<lb />syrup, but somewhere along the line " lets say<lb />high school " my tongue and my mind verged into<lb />one constant thought: Ketchup is friggin gross!<lb /><lb />Now I don't like to badger too many people<lb />with how I feel about something, but when I see<lb />people use ketchup it makes my heart wrench. For<lb />years now I have been enjoying my french fries and<lb />hamburgers without that salty fart taste infecting<lb />everything that I eat, but I sometimes feel I just<lb />dont get it. And I dont. I am not sure where my<lb />logic derives from, but let us really think about<lb />ketchup for a moment.<lb /><lb />My first thought: What the hell is ketchup?<lb /><lb />Really, someone tell me, because I know that<lb />when you mash a bunch of tomatoes together<lb />you get marinara sauce. Mash them lightly, hard<lb />or medium, the results will never be ketchup ...<lb />ever. So logically from time to time, I read the<lb />ingredients of the red taint: vinegar and tomato<lb />paste. How does this happen? There is nothing<lb />in the ingredients that leads you to believe that<lb />adding these things together should equal a salty,<lb />tomato-like gel that goes " it doesnt " with<lb />potatoes and meat.<lb />_ So where are we left in a society where every-<lb />one is using a condiment that has no identity? I<lb />suppose it comes down to a personal battle that<lb />everyone must face for themselves, but unfortu-<lb />nately some people take it too far, and I cannot<lb />keep it to myself anymore.<lb /><lb />These situations come into play when I see that<lb />murderous act of ketchup on a steak, on chicken,<lb />or, God forbid, on pork. How were you people<lb />raised? A friend of mine used to have to eat cheese<lb />and ketchup sandwiches because he was so poor.<lb />Is this the key? Is it poverty that keeps ketchup<lb />going? Because I will tell you right now, I have<lb />never been rich, but to use ketchup as some sort<lb />of enhancer like salt is almost like calling cancer .<lb />an enhancer.<lb /><lb />Although I usually stand alone in my battle<lb />against the red demon, one thing that many people,<lb />including the users, all agree on is the smell. Why,<lb />dear God, does ketchup smell so bad? Now I can<lb />understand some people dont mind the smell when<lb />it is on food " I cant " but when it is separated<lb />from its parasitic relationship, it can stain lives.<lb /><lb />As I have delved into the ingredients question<lb /><lb />_ with no avail, I will present another: What can<lb /><lb />produce such a horrid smell? One might think<lb />vinegar, but I know what that smells like and I<lb /><lb />dont mind it. Mayonnaise doesnt smell that bad<lb />and mustard is quite neutral. In fact, mustard is a<lb /><lb />great substitute for ketchup if anyone is interested<lb />in a withdrawal program.<lb /><lb />In the end though, and I do mean the end,<lb />everyone will more than likely have to stand trial<lb />for their condiment abuses. Years ago, I went a<lb />little overboard on honey mustard, but I claim<lb />responsibility for it. Can you withstand the trial<lb /><lb />of ketchup abuse? Think about it...<lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at :<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Kimberly Bellamy J.D. <lb />TUESDAY JANUARY 15, 2008<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN * SPORTS<lb /><lb />PAGE Be<lb /><lb />REFLECTION continued from 81<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Quarterback Patrick Pinkney used his legs and his arm to beat North Carolina.<lb /><lb />best passing performance in<lb />school history.<lb /><lb />Also exploding onto the<lb />scene was senior running back<lb />Chris Johnson, who racked up<lb />136 receiving yards and two<lb />touchdowns. The explosive<lb />senior had 258 all-purpose yards<lb />against the Heels.<lb /><lb />But even these two couldn't<lb />seal the deal for the Pirates.<lb />The victory rested on a foot<lb />of a kicker, Ben Hartman, who<lb />was 1-of-4 before nailing the<lb />game-winner.<lb /><lb />You just have to block out<lb />everything that has gone bad,<lb />said the Pirates kicker. I knew<lb />it was going to come down to me<lb />and I just said, ~forget about the<lb />other three and make this one;<lb />this one counts.<lb /><lb />And with the stands in<lb />Dowdy-Ficklen deafly silent,<lb />Hartmans kick sailed through<lb />the uprights and the Pirates<lb /><lb />defeated UNC for the first time<lb /><lb />since 1975.<lb /><lb />We're growing, were<lb />moving in the right direction,<lb />Holtz said after the victory. We<lb />still have a long way to go but<lb />I couldn't be more pleased with<lb />the attitude, the way these play-<lb />ers are working and the commit-<lb />ment level that they have.<lb /><lb />The next two weeks would<lb />feature heart-breaking losses, as<lb />the Pirates fell to rival Southern<lb />Miss, 28-21, in the opener of C-<lb />USA play and then to national<lb />powerhouse West Virginia,<lb />48-7. ,<lb /><lb />We have to get ourselves<lb />off the ground and brush off,<lb />Holtz said in the week leading<lb />up to the pivotal Houston game.<lb />I told the team that nothing<lb />is ever as good or as bad as it<lb />seems. Reality falls somewhere<lb />in between and I think things<lb />are not as bad as they seem right<lb />now. We have to step up because<lb />life is a series of battles. You will<lb />rarely, if ever, be on the very top<lb />or bottom.<lb /><lb />ECU would answer all of the<lb />questions surrounding the pro-<lb />gram with a 37-35 road victory<lb />over Houston that many Pirates<lb />would simply make down to<lb />good luck.<lb /><lb />The Cougars missed all<lb />three of their field goal attempts,<lb />two of which came with less<lb />than two minutes left in the<lb />game, and the Pirates made<lb />their only attempt, which was<lb />the difference in the game.<lb /><lb />Surprisingly, the game<lb />marked Johnsons first 100-yard<lb />rushing game of the season, as<lb /><lb />the playmaker ran for 147 yards<lb />and two touchdowns.<lb /><lb />We got the rushing game<lb />going, said Holtz. I thought<lb />Chris Johnson had an excellent<lb />game; he ran hard, ran physical<lb />and really did a nice job with<lb />2 aa<lb /><lb />Also, redshirt sophomore<lb />Rob Kass played the entire<lb />second half for the Pirates<lb />and threw for 110 yards and<lb />one touchdown in his first<lb />significant action since being<lb />suspended prior to the season<lb />opener against Virginia Tech.<lb /><lb />The win over Houston was<lb />the first over three-straight<lb /><lb />crucial conference victories for<lb />LOU.<lb /><lb />In the 52-38 victory against<lb />UCF, Johnson continued his<lb />dominance as he set the ECU<lb />record for all purpose yards in<lb /><lb />~a game with 372.<lb /><lb />Johnson took a kickoff back<lb />for a touchdown, rushed for a<lb /><lb />touchdown and caught a touch- ©<lb /><lb />down pass in an astonishing<lb /><lb />display of his set of skills.<lb />Kass was effective once<lb /><lb />again as he was 12-of-23 for<lb /><lb />201 yards and three touchdowns<lb /><lb />against UCF. ,<lb /><lb />In the wildest of college<lb />football seasons, no one would<lb />have suspected the ending to<lb />the Pirates 45-42 overtime win<lb />against UTEP. zi<lb /><lb />With time seemingly against<lb />ECU, Kass sent the game to<lb />overtime with a 34-yard touch-<lb />down pass to Juwon Crowell as<lb />time expired.<lb /><lb />Then in the extra period,<lb />Kass took a quarterback keeper<lb />up the middle for a 1-yard<lb />touchdown and a victory as the<lb />Miners only came away with a<lb />field goal in their only overtime<lb />possession.<lb /><lb />_ Dwayne Harris was the star<lb />for the Pirates as the freshman<lb /><lb />broke open the third quarter |<lb /><lb />scoring.<lb /><lb />First the ECU wide receiver<lb />took a handoff on a reverse and<lb />dashed 57 yards for a touch-<lb />down to give ECU a 25-22 lead.<lb />Harris then took a handoff on<lb />a double reverse and hit a wide<lb />open | on an 80-<lb />yard touchdown pass, giving the<lb />Pirates a 32-22 lead.<lb /><lb />This was a really big game<lb />for our morale and for our play-<lb />ers, said Holtz. ."fust to see<lb />their attitude, their sigh of relief,<lb />their smiles, their excitement<lb />and enthusiasm in the locker<lb />room after the game was a lot<lb />of fun. . : :<lb /><lb />ECU would follow up the<lb /><lb />miracle in El Paso with a flat<lb />performance in a 34-20 loss at<lb />home to archrival NC State.<lb /><lb />Just about anything that<lb />could go wrong went wrong for<lb />the Pirates, and after the loss<lb />to NC State snapped a three<lb />game winning streak, the Pirate<lb />Nation was once again search-<lb />ing for answers.<lb /><lb />The perfect remedy to the<lb />disaster against the Wolfpack<lb />was a homecoming date against<lb />an overmatched UAB team.<lb /><lb />In the 41-6 ECU win,<lb /><lb />Pinkney emerged from the<lb />Pirates bench as has been the<lb /><lb />case most of the season. Pinkney<lb /><lb />was 6-of-7 for 159 yards and two<lb />touchdowns.<lb /><lb />Sophomore Jamar Bryant<lb />also had a break out game in<lb />catching six passes for 114 yards<lb />and a touchdown.<lb /><lb />The momentum gained by<lb />the Pirates destruction of the<lb />Blazers carried into the next<lb />contest on the road against<lb />Memphis.<lb /><lb />The Pirates again dominated<lb />their competition behind Chris<lb />Johnsons career day. Johnson<lb />rushed for 301 yards and four<lb />touchdowns on only 20 carries.<lb /><lb />Patrick Pinkney also ran<lb />for 94 yards and a touchdown,<lb /><lb />in addition to throwing for 105<lb />yards and two touchdowns.<lb />ECU seemed to be rolling<lb /><lb />- once again and needed to win<lb /><lb />its last two games to clinch a<lb />conference title game berth.<lb /><lb />But Marshall didnt seem to<lb />get the memo.<lb /><lb />The Pirates were embar-<lb />rassed and surprisingly beaten<lb />by the Thundering Herd in<lb />Huntington, 26-7.<lb /><lb />The Pirates had the follow-<lb />ing week off to reflect on the<lb />opportunity that they had lost,<lb />as the bye week finally came<lb />before the regular season finale<lb />at home against ~Tulane.<lb /><lb />Tulane would prove to be no<lb />contest to ECU as the Pirates<lb />easily won, 35-12.<lb /><lb />After playing the waiting<lb />game to see their postseason<lb />destination it finally became<lb />clear that ECU would be head-<lb />ing to Hawaii to take on No. 24<lb />Boise State. .<lb /><lb />Behind Johnsons NCAA<lb />Bowl record 408 all-purpose<lb />yards, ECU captured the Hawaii<lb />Bowl title, 41-38, after a game-<lb />ending 34-yard field goal from<lb />Hartman.<lb /><lb />Johnson finished the day<lb />rushing for 223 yards and one<lb />touchdown. He also had three<lb /><lb />receptions for 32 yards and a<lb /><lb />touchdown.<lb /><lb />What the rest of country<lb />saw is what we've been watch-<lb />ing for three years, Holtz told<lb />the Associated Press. Im the<lb />president of the<lb />fan club. I am his biggest fan.<lb />He is one of the hardest workers<lb />on this team. Hes humble. He<lb />works his tail off.<lb /><lb />Pinkney, who played most of<lb />the game, went 12-of-19 for 118<lb />yards and a touchdown. Kass<lb />only had one pass completion,<lb />but it was very meaningful, as it<lb />put ECU in field goal range for<lb />the game-winning kick/<lb /><lb />The Pirates led 38-14 with<lb />9:02 left in the third before<lb />Boise State mounted a comeback<lb /><lb />for the ages.<lb />With 1:25 remaining in the.<lb /><lb />fourth quarter, Johnsons second<lb />fumble of the year was taken<lb />back for the tying score.<lb /><lb />The game didnt remain<lb />deadlocked for long, as Kass<lb />came in to direct the Pirates<lb />down the field in position for<lb />Hartmans game winner.<lb /><lb />I think we learned a lot<lb />from that game, Holtz told The<lb />Daily Reflector. We got on them<lb />the first day they were here in<lb />Hawaii to really bring them back<lb />in. We tried to draw the line and<lb />say this is one of the best bowls<lb />in the country. I thought those<lb />players believed that, and these<lb />players were focused.<lb /><lb />With the season over, Holtz<lb />and his staff will turn their focus<lb />towards the 2008 season with<lb />spring practice looming.<lb /><lb />But rest assured, the 2007<lb />squad will never be forgot-<lb />ten for bringing ECU and the<lb />Pirate Nation back to national<lb />prominence.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Photo by Robyn McLawhorn<lb /><lb />FINAL RECORD<lb /><lb />ATE<lb /><lb />BECAUSE OF YOU, THE ATMOSPHERE IN MINGES COLISEUM WAS<lb />AWESOME AND WE PROVED TO THE TIGERS AND WOLFPACK THAT<lb />ECU STUDENTS ARE A TOUGH CROWD TO PLAY IN FRONT OF!<lb /><lb />THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT ENCOURAGES YOU TO KEEP ATTENDING<lb />| GAMES AND CREATING THAT EXCITING ATMOSPHERE IN MINGES<lb />THAT ONLY THE PIRATE NATION CAN! Smith said at<lb />a press conference Dec. 18 he<lb />would return to school, defying<lb />analysts who said he had noth-<lb />ing left to prove, and would be<lb />risking injury with more time<lb />in college.<lb /><lb />Kevin had a great career at<lb />UCF, coach George OLeary<lb />said in a written statement.<lb />We thank him for his contribu-<lb />tions over the past three years<lb />and wish him nothing but the<lb />best.<lb /><lb />The biggest knock on Smith<lb />was that he accomplished those<lb />feats in Conference USA, though<lb />he also rushed for 149 yards and<lb />two touchdowns against Texas<lb />this season.<lb /><lb />Smith isnt known as a big-<lb />time speedster, though he is fast.<lb />His greatest asset is patience<lb />and vision - knowing where to<lb />make cuts to break long runs. He<lb />actually hasnt been timed in a<lb />40-yard dash since high school,<lb />and said hes eager to prove he<lb />can run with the big guys.<lb /><lb />This is what people want<lb />to see: ~Is he fast, Smith said.<lb />They want to know how fast<lb />Im going to be. Mar-<lb />quette was ranked ninth in the<lb />nation when the Pirates beat the<lb />Golden Eagles 51-46 in 2002.<lb /><lb />Despite the ability to pull<lb />off the occasional upset, Herrion<lb />was fired because he couldn't<lb />consistently compete in Confer-<lb />ence USA.<lb /><lb />Stokes, who replaced Her-<lb />rion, also couldnt keep ECU out<lb />of the cellar in C-USA.<lb /><lb />Under Stokes, the Pirates<lb />were blown out frequently and<lb />only managed three conference<lb />wins in two seasons.<lb /><lb />So with the high of beating<lb />N.C. There is flexibility in this type of<lb />counseling in regards to the needs and benefits<lb />of those that seek it, Moore said.<lb /><lb />After someone experiences a traumatic event,<lb />grief can appear in that person in several differ-<lb />ent forms. A feeling of numbness and emptiness<lb />can occur, as well as physical changes that can<lb />include trembling, nausea, fatigue and difficulty<lb />eating and sleeping. Then, after beginning to adjust<lb />to living in a world without the person or item<lb />that has been lost, they must move on with life.<lb />The grieving process is over only when a person<lb />completes these steps.<lb /><lb />The counseling center provides ongoing<lb />individual counseling to students who are griev-<lb />ing, said Angela Holman, a counselor at the<lb />Student Development Center.<lb /><lb />Many students seek or are referred to ser-<lb />vices for a past loss that is still impacting them,<lb />or a current loss. Some students choose to leave<lb />school or take a break when going through very<lb />painful grief, however, there are many students<lb />who stay in school and complete semesters after<lb />experiencing a significant loss.<lb /><lb />Holman also says that two common issues<lb />that bring students into the center for grief<lb />counseling are the loss of a relationship partner<lb />or parent, and in recent years, those who have<lb />experienced the death of a friend (accidental<lb />or suicide) and pregnancy loss (miscarriage or<lb />abortion).<lb /><lb />In addition to counseling services provided by<lb />the ECU Counseling and Student Development<lb />Center, previous workshops have included ses-<lb />sions related to dealing with the grief of losing<lb />a loved one.<lb /><lb />Holman recalls that the workshop included<lb />guided reflection and questions to help students<lb />explore the ways they are impacted by the loss of<lb />their loves ones.<lb /><lb />Along with handouts about information dis-<lb />cussed, students who attended the workshop were<lb />given links to campus resources, including the<lb />Dean of Students Office, the Counseling Center<lb />and Campus Ministries, in an effort to provide<lb />assistance to their personal and academic needs.<lb />Holman would like to have the workshop run<lb />again this semester, with students experiencing<lb />the same format as before.<lb /><lb />In order for one to heal from loss, it is impor-<lb />tant to have support of other people during the<lb />difficult time. Support can come from a number<lb />of different sources, including friends, family,<lb />a faith community, support groups, as well as<lb />therapists and other professionals.<lb /><lb />While it may not be easy to confide in another<lb />during the grieving process, it is vital to accept<lb />help and to not mourn alone. Keeping feelings<lb />and thoughts out in the open is helpful. If these<lb />thoughts are suppressed over a period of time,<lb />the grieving process may be hindered, delaying<lb />a full recovery.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />always look for the<lb /><lb />Before giving, |<lb /><lb />Humane Seal.<lb />4<lb /><lb />NOAH WYLE<lb />, Star of NBC's hit show ER<lb /><lb />The Humane Charity Seal of<lb />Approval guarantees that a health.<lb /><lb />charity funds vital _<lb />patient services or 4<lb />life-saving medical # 2 |<lb />research, butnever F"<lb />animal experiments.
