Has an old family home that one of her cousins lived m. Moved to Durham when she was six to live with her aunt after her mother died. When her aunt died she moved to Bullock to live with her uncle. She went to Edgemont School in Durham then finished out her education at Stouvall. Siblings She was the second too youngest of seven children. College education When she graduated in 1945 from Storvan she decided to go to East Carolina Teacher's College. She always wanted to be a teacher so her uncle sent her to school. He owned the only store in Bullock. She was not expected to go to college but her uncle wanted her to. She was the only one to go to college and graduate out of her seven siblings. The others went to business school and one went to beauty school. First College Experience LJ 1 130 LJ 1 150 LJ 1 170 LJ 1 190 She had never been out of her hometown much so it was a very difficult time for her to adjust when she arrived in Greenville. Talks About where she lived her first year and what kinds of experiences she had during her first year or two at ECTC. Talks about living in Wilson and Fleming Hall. Major at ECTC she majored in Education and explains what kind of cburses she'had to take and how it is different from what an education major had to learn today. Talks about practice teaching at Wahl Coates School and about her teachers. In particular she talks about Dr. Coates for whom Wahl Coates School is named. She also talks about the student teacher relationship at ECTC when she attended. Student life Went to movies on campus at Austin. Discusses how people used to get calls for dates and so forth in the parlors of the dorm. Talks about a student hang out called the Y shop. Austin Building is where the cupola came from. Tell about not being able to go home during your first semester. Remembers Rules and regulations, which includes curfews for dorms and rules for visitors. Veterans Discusses how the veterans came to ECTC in 1946. Describes it as a very good thing. Means more males on campus so more dates. Talks about dances and basketball. Doesn't remember there being football at this time. Campus Talks about how campus looked then as compared to the present campus. Tells about taking picnics by the river that is the same stream where the band field and commuter parking lot is located. Talks about the Y store which was where the library is now. You could go dancing there and hang out. Also tells where the infirmary used to be located and the dorms Wilson hall and Fleming. u 1 236 Graduation She graduated in 1949, got manied in 1950. She met her husband at ECTC. They moved to Durham and she worked for the Recreation department there. She had her first child and stopped work for a while. She taught at Edgemont School after her pregnancy. Talks about how she got to work. Discusses the kinds of students she had when she taught there. Discusses several moves her and her husband made and his school career. Moved to Greenville and taught at Stokes. Then moved to Wilmington, then back to Greenville. Then went to Rome, Georgia. Had two boys and a girl during this period. She taught at Central Primary in Rome, Georgia. She was a member of the Linear Society, which was a literary society that studied the works of Edgar Allen Poe. Was also the May Day Queen in 1949. Tells about the celebration for the May Day holiday, which was at the end of the spring semester. Tells about the group the Collegians, which was a concert band at LJ 1 421 Involvement in ECU ALUMNI Was in 2001 homecoming parade as the returning May Day Queen. There was an article written about it in the ECU Report. Pictures and other articles were shown. Talks about student life including stories about dances and activities at the Y soda shop and movies at Austin, also how she used to get rides home to Bullock from classmates.
