          <lb />A group of thieves broke into the Fayerville<lb />Museum of Art last night and stole over 60<lb />works worth thousands of dollars.<lb /><lb />The burglary was reported last night by a<lb />witness who was walking their dog. A single<lb />masked intruder was caught on security<lb />footage taking the artwork away, according<lb />to the prosecutor's office. A Window had been<lb />broken giving access to the museum.<lb /><lb />Police and investigators have sealed off the<lb />museum.<lb /><lb />Visitors wishing to tour the museum were<lb />met with disappointment after climbing the<lb />steps to the ornate wooden doors of the<lb />museum. Awaiting them at the top of the<lb />steps, written notices stated visitors would<lb />have to come back another time due to<lb />otechnical reasons. By early afternoon, the<lb />entrance had-been cordoned off and security<lb />barriers erected<lb /><lb /></p>

Snooze once, shame<lb />on early morning classes. Snooze twice, shame on<lb />me. | roll out of bed and grab my phone for the<lb />third time to finally silence it. My fingers lightly tap<lb />and glide over the screen, the artificial light burning<lb />my eyes so that everything around it appears as<lb />darkness. 82 degrees and sunny with a 0% chance<lb />of rain. Great! | think to myself.<lb /><lb />| set my phone down and stumble into the<lb /><lb />bathroom to look at myself 2 feet away from a mirror.<lb /><lb />Grab my toothbrush, hairbrush, and other tools for<lb />styling, all within armTs reach. (My makeup on a good<lb />day). Walk a few feet to my closet and ponder over<lb />my clothes, my eyes scanning a few feet of space.<lb /><lb />| then stare a few inches down at my breakfast and<lb />manage to sneak in some time a few feet away from<lb />the TV. The news is important, telling me everything |<lb />need to know about the outside world.<lb /><lb />I'm late for class. My steps are quick as | smoothly<lb />maneuver around the sleepless walkers. Sidewalk,<lb />phone, people. My eyes know the drill. ItTs a skill ITve<lb />acquired in college.<lb /><lb />My class is on the third floor, so | step into an<lb />elevator just a few feet wide. There are a couple other<lb />students on the elevator. We pretend to play with our<lb />phones a few inches from our faces because the few<lb />inches of space between us is awkward.<lb /><lb />| go to class so that my eyes can follow a new<lb />routine. Notebook, projector, notebook, projector.<lb />My back hunches to get closer to the paper, writing<lb />as rapidly as possible. This particular professor<lb />has a routine on his own: PowerPoint, back wall,<lb />PowerPoint, back wall. The few feet of space<lb />between him and us feels like the Grand Canyon.<lb />Sidewalk, phone, people. Elevator, class. Sometimes<lb />the stairs so | can get my exercise.<lb /><lb />In the afternoon, | walk back to my apartment.<lb />| shade my eyes with my hand initially"l donTt<lb />remember it being this sunny and hot. | notice how<lb />pretty the campus looks today. The trees sparkle<lb /><lb />with golden sun-light, each intricately-designed leaf<lb />waving softly in the breeze. The vibrant, red brick<lb />path that winds around each building is passionately<lb />illuminated, and the flower beds are adorned with<lb />star-shaped flowers, all of it under a blue sky as<lb />smooth as a stone. <lb />Fiction<lb /><lb />Lockers<lb /><lb />McKenzie Shelton<lb />First Place<lb /><lb />All around me, lockers are slamming. To the right, to<lb />the left, behind me and to the left, below me. People<lb />in this school are constantly slamming their lockers,<lb />as if that metallic, ear-splitting clang will make<lb /><lb />them get to where they're going quicker. TheyTre in<lb />competition with one another, | swear, A free period<lb />to the kid with the most obnoxious locker slam! All<lb />around me, a zinging cacophony of lockers.<lb /><lb />As I'm finishing delivering my books to my own<lb />locker, | close and then carefully, quietly, shut it,<lb />savoring the satisfying click it makes, metal on metal<lb />locking things in place. Keeping my things safe,<lb />lockers are good things, donTt you think? They're<lb />private, uniform, clean, reliable...no frills security. |<lb />like lockers. Don't get me wrong, | mean | like other<lb />stuff...oversized shirts, tapestries, C.S. Lewis, foreign<lb />movies...lockers are just cool boxes, simple with<lb />great utility. Safe.<lb /><lb />Back to slamming"it would always be like this.<lb />Every day, 3:30pm during the after-school flurry of<lb />papers and hormones, | would be standing on my<lb />side of the hall, putting my things away, Aidan would<lb />be on the opposite side, doing the same. All of a<lb />sudden one locker would slam, then another, then<lb />another...another, and another...lockers arguing<lb />and screaming over each other! | would listen to<lb />their lead pipe song for a second and then cast a<lb />glance over my shoulder...was he looking? His broad<lb />grin broadened when he caught my eye and | shyly<lb />looked down, following the guidebook for flirting<lb />that I'd learned from the movies. Always coy, always<lb />gentle. You are a flower. | know now from experience<lb />that ITm less of a flower and more like...a locker.<lb /><lb />Real world again, and | look where Aidan always<lb />stood on the other side of the hall. ItTs funny how<lb />the papers keep on flying and hormones continue<lb />raging and lockers go on slamming even when<lb />heTs not there. Funny. | shift my now lightweight<lb />backpack onto my other shoulder and head down<lb />the hallway, away from the frenzy. Keeping to the<lb />right side, | manage a brisk, even pace, turning left<lb /><lb />at the courtyard. My eyes scrape over the posters<lb />| see everyday"various authoritative figures and<lb />celebrities wallpaper the school, imploring me to<lb />stay away from drugs, sex, and rock nT roll. | catch a<lb />glimpse of my reflection in the glass of a courtyard<lb />window. <lb />Fiction<lb /><lb />Initiation<lb /><lb />seth Teegarden<lb />Second Place<lb /><lb />The storm outside lashed against the cold train as it<lb />snaked its way through the countryside. Raindrops<lb />pounded the earth and made it boil under the<lb />tracks. The train lurched into the station on its last<lb />legs. Hail rained incessantly down onto the railcars<lb />with a riotous clatter. The sound of the mechanisms<lb />thrummed through it, rattling the windows and<lb />rocking each individual car back and forth with a<lb />sound akin to a dull heartbeat. The lights flickered<lb />on and off and filled the room with a strange glow<lb />that seeped into the air. A young man looking out the<lb />window was thrown from his seat onto the ground.<lb />He sprawled onto the floor on his hands and knees<lb />and felt himself bite his tongue. Pushing himself up<lb />against the window for balance, he felt the cold rain<lb />pummeling the glass windowpane, thunder rattled<lb />the window and startled him. Had crack<lb /><lb />of thunder always caught him off guard? It made him<lb />feel weak and vulnerable in comparison to the other<lb />men, the one across from him in particular.<lb /><lb />The other manTs back was ramrod-straight and<lb />had never willingly touched the back of his seat. The<lb />ends of his fingers thrummed down his knees while<lb />the other hand ran through his thistle, cropped hair.<lb />He was an older man with a face like a wet, wrinkled<lb />book of manners and his eyes were sharp, hoary,<lb />and flecked with bitter recrimination, He kept sense<lb />of decorum, however, refusing to speak to anyone<lb />on the train below his rank. Their eyes would often<lb />meet while looking around but the older man never<lb />blinked. His breath came out in restless bursts and<lb />the young man could tell that he probably wasn't<lb />enjoying the journey. He reminded the young man of<lb />a great heron that used to prey on the fish in his pond<lb />back in Altenburg.<lb /><lb />The train was filled to the brim with fresh, crisp lines<lb />of soldiers waiting for the train to slog to a stop. Their<lb />eyes all stood straight ahead and their backs sat as<lb />straight as his. He thought of toy soldiers all lined up<lb />in a row waiting to be formed up into lines of battle.<lb />Lightning flashed across the windows and threw the<lb /><lb />young manTs reflection back at himself. He watched<lb />the dark shapes outside as the rain swept past them,<lb />small villages and farms thrown against the pale<lb />outline of his pale, worried visage.<lb /><lb />Doors began to slide open with a loud clatter.<lb />Officers from different squads began pacing through<lb />the railcars, growling and cajoling their men to be<lb />ready to disembark. The men began to organize their<lb />rucksacks and check their weapons. The young man<lb />looked down at his uniform to make sure everything<lb />was in order. The stark black of his new uniform<lb />contrasted well with the insignia over his heart.<lb />Stitched into the fabric was a flaming sword against a<lb />white shield. Around the hilt and up the blade ran a<lb />black cobra with fangs displayed proudly. Above and<lb />below the image it read: Einsatzkommando Bauer -<lb />Cobra Division.<lb /><lb />The train doors opened and the wind began<lb />whirling through the open portals. Officers exited<lb />first with their men following close behind. Row upon<lb />row of silent, doughty soldiers began forming along<lb />the platform next to the train. The rain deadened<lb />the shouts of the officers calling the men to form up.<lb />Their harsh voices were lost in the storm and ranks<lb />and files of men were seemingly formed together<lb />by marionette strings. Bauer flowed out the door<lb />with the rest of his unit. He could feel the eyes of the<lb />older man boring into the back of him as they got off<lb />the train. He was grateful for the howling rainstorm<lb />outside, if only because it isolated him from that gaze.<lb /><lb />Clouds covered the skies and threw a dull, gray<lb />shade on the bricks and mortar. The cobbled streets<lb />were warped and buckled from the hundreds<lb />of years bearing loads of human traffic. The rain<lb />thundered down and the water snaked through the<lb />innumerable, invisible side streets, gathering up<lb />like a tide to sweep away the evidence of human<lb />habitation. Bauer followed the man in front of him<lb />blindly as his unit was led through the main street and<lb />into a commandeered warehouse. Inside were fresh<lb />supplies and a team of soldiers ready to debrief.<lb /><lb /></p>
        <pb facs="00062627_0084" />
        <p>
          <lb />
          <lb />78<lb /><lb />oWhich one of you is in command? a young officer<lb />asked Bauer as he filled his rucksack with extra rations.<lb /><lb />o| am, a voice said out of the darkness. It was the older<lb />man Bauer had been sitting across from on the train.<lb /><lb />oExplain our assignment to the men and they'll take it<lb />from there. His diction, Bauer noticed, was as crisp<lb />as fallen snow.<lb /><lb />oFine. Listen up men, the officer pointed towards<lb />a large map, oThe city you've all been assigned to<lb />is called Ararat. While it is now hundreds of miles<lb />behind the actual frontline, its high concentration of<lb />undesirables has led us to call in experts like you.<lb /><lb />oYou are all aware ITm sure, he said with a feral smile,<lb />oof the reputation that you've gained within this army?<lb /><lb />Dark chuckles rippled through the kneeling men.<lb />Some began slapping each other and laughing like<lb />young boys about to be released from school. Others<lb />looked stone-faced at the men and grimly shook<lb />their heads. Bauer noticed the intensity with which<lb />the older men studied the map on the wall. He could<lb />almost feel their concentration as they planned troop<lb />deployment and strategy. The laughter began dying<lb />down and the older man stepped forward to take the<lb />place of the other officer. He drew out a red pencil<lb />and began mapping arrows through the streets. He<lb />began splitting the men into a handful of lines that<lb />moved across the map like a dozen centipedes. Bauer<lb />watched the men grunt in approval, the operation<lb />would be completed within the day and they'd all be<lb />back on the train tomorrow. Bauer was impressed.<lb /><lb />The first house they came to was a one story brick<lb />cottage. It looked like something out of a Grimm<lb />fairytale, till the man on point blew the cellar doors<lb />open. Bauer rushed down the stairs with the rest of<lb />the men. Flashlights on the barrels of their rifles threw<lb />shadows and outlines against the walls. Aman and<lb />a woman were huddled together in a corner babbling<lb />in Yiddish. The rain outside muffled the chorus of<lb />muzzles chiming against flesh and concrete.<lb /><lb />Water soaked through his shirt and into his skin. He<lb />shivered as the squad ran down another side street.<lb /><lb />Puddles had formed where gutters redirected the<lb />torrent into the ground. Bauer could hear his heart<lb />pumping blood up into his brain. The cold vice of<lb />nausea gripped his throat and made him want to<lb />swallow his tongue.<lb /><lb />The next house was tall and slouched onto the house<lb />next to it like a drunken relative. They found the family<lb />sitting together having supper. The father lunged out of<lb />his chair, perhaps to reach for something to protect his<lb />family. He pulled the tablecloth down onto the floor as<lb />he went down, filling in the red-checkered patterns with<lb />his blood. The wife sat in shock while the children fled<lb />up the stairs, screaming.<lb /><lb />oDamn it, one Kommando said, oI hate kids.<lb /><lb />ItTs true, Bauer thought to himself, no one likes<lb />playing hide-and-seek.<lb /><lb />Children were often the most difficult part of jobs like<lb />this. They would either run to their parents or go hide in<lb />their secret nooks and crannies. Finding children took<lb />a special sort of talent. You had to be able to think like<lb />a child, to remember what it was like to be young again.<lb />This was, in fact one of the most important objectives for<lb />a Kommando. It didnTt do any good to find the parents<lb />if you let the little ones get away.<lb /><lb />"Well Bauer, the man said, olet's see that special talent<lb />of yours. His jaw was a bear trap behind his muffling<lb />mask and wicked smile.<lb /><lb />Bauer's eyes shone, crinkling at the edges like a child<lb />on Christmas morning. The other men watched as he<lb />thundered up the stairs, hollering. Eyeing one another,<lb />they shrugged their shoulders at the new guy. They<lb />hadn't realized how much Bauer was going to<lb />love his job. As he clomped up the staircase, Bauer felt<lb />the wave of nausea hit hi again. He leaned against the<lb />railing when reached the top of the stairs. The walls<lb />were spinning around him. He could feel the rain mixing<lb />with his sweat, the damp weight suffocating his wild<lb />heartbeat. Creaks echoed throughout the house as the<lb />other men searched the lower level for anyone else.<lb />Bauer knew they wouldn't come upstairs though.<lb /><lb /></p>
        <pb facs="00062627_0085" />
        <p>
          <lb />
          <lb />It was his job to hunt down the child targets and<lb />no one else. Please stay down there, he thought to<lb />himself, donTt let them see me like this.<lb /><lb />The upstairs was nothing but a long hallway of rooms<lb />jutting out to the left. There was only one way to the<lb />stairs and Bauer stood in front of it. He wiped his hands<lb />down his pant legs and sighted the barrel of his gun on<lb />the first door. Rasps of breath scratched his throat and<lb />tension cut through the haze in his head like a razor. He<lb />opened the door with a gentle turn and found the room<lb />dark and unoccupied. It had the smell of must and<lb />age. No one had been using it in quite some time,<lb />obviously. The next room was in the exact same way.<lb />Bauer strained his ears for any sort of sound that might<lb />give the children away. He thought of places in this<lb />house that a child would love to hide in, places to go<lb />when they were upset or afraid.<lb /><lb />He found it in the third room. The storm had painted<lb />the large window at the end of the hall so black that<lb />Bauer had almost missed the outline of the door. He<lb />cradled the brass doorknob, turning it in a full circle,<lb />until it was a hair's breadth from knocking against the<lb />lock. The room was full of furniture covered with white<lb />covering. It would be paradise for an imaginative<lb />group of children. He checked the wall for his<lb />shadow and wrapped his gun around his back,<lb />freeing his hands. He got down on his hands and<lb />knees and began peeking under the tables and<lb />chairs. Loud noises always set him on edge when he<lb />was like this. Even his own breath flustered him and<lb />drove him mad. His heart began to crystalize as he<lb />thought of a narrowing selection of hiding places<lb />left, turning to stone for his own sake. Dust spores<lb />floated in the air around him, the flashes of lightning<lb />and thunder illuminated them like shadows.<lb /><lb />God, donTt make me do this, he thought, panicking.<lb />Let them have found a way outside, into the storm. Out<lb />into the rain where | can't ever find them.<lb /><lb />There was a sudden, slight rustling that came from his<lb />right. His eyes pored over the walls and the furniture,<lb /><lb />but couldn't find anything. Then, almost by pure<lb />chance, he saw the distinctive crack in the floorboards<lb />that gave away the location of the secret room. Bauer<lb />stood up and walked over to the spot in the floor. He<lb />put his boot on the false floor and leaned his weight<lb />gee)<lb /><lb />"Hollow," he thought, choking back tears. "God<lb />damn it."<lb /><lb />There were three of them this time, two little boys<lb />with round cheeks and a thin, little girl whose eyes<lb />went wide when he gently pulled up the floor. She<lb />was whispering into the ear of one boy, her hands<lb />around his head. The words flew from her mouth like<lb />the soft trilling of a bird song.<lb /><lb />oBaruch ata Adonai, Elohemu melech ha-olam she-<lb />hecheyanu. Blessed are you. Lord Our God, King of the<lb />Universe.<lb /><lb />Bauer gently sobbed as he wrapped his hands over<lb />the mouths of the two boys. The little girl mindlessly<lb />continued her prayer, heedless of the danger.<lb /><lb />"Ve-kiyemanu, ve-higiyanu la-zeman, Who enabled us<lb />to reach this season.<lb /><lb />Next, he lifted her out of the hole and wrapped her<lb />up in his lap. His whole body shook with rage and<lb />grief as he felt her<lb />tiny body struggling against his grip. He looked away<lb />trom her, towards the walls and the windows, at the<lb />silent furniture that<lb />stood witness.<lb /><lb />Choking back tears, he set her body back into the<lb />hole with her brothers, nestling them together in each<lb />other's embrace. He looked back towards the door,<lb />fearful someone might see, and gently drew out a<lb />tiny, silver hexagram from around his neck. He placed<lb />it around the girlTs neck with a weak smile. He finished<lb />the prayer the girl was trying to recite, the pain of the<lb />memory of the prayer filling his own head with guilt.<lb /><lb />oVe-kiyemanu, ve-higiyanu la-zeman ha-zeh. Bauer<lb />spoke to the ghosts of his past; Who has kept us alive<lb />and has preserved us.<lb /><lb /></p>
