Crack...crack...crack...check phone, crack...tired, crack...<lb />donTt want to (crack) go... Suddenly, as if shooting up from underwa-<lb />ter, I realize that there is no noise"silence. A campus of about 27,000<lb />students is completely and utterly silent.<lb /><lb />I realize now that I am breaking some unwritten rule by watching the<lb /><lb />studying the patterns in the sidewalk.<lb /><lb />I think if someone were to break the barrier of silence, like a wrecking<lb />ball bashing through an unstable home, I wouldnTt hear it"itTs as if I<lb />am on the other side of a glass wall""I can see someone on the other<lb />side shouting and beating on the glass with a closed fist, but I hear<lb />nothing. ItTs as if my ears have folded over, theyTre full of cotton balls,<lb />theyTve been chopped off...or as if I am wearing iPod headphones.<lb /><lb />ITm not wearing headphones, but I wish I were-"then I would have<lb />a rhythm to follow other than the predictable melody of muteness.<lb />Calm and quiet is nice, but zombiehood is decidedly not.<lb /><lb />ItTs 8:30 a.m. on a Monday morning, and I am walking to class while<lb />mentally cuddled up in my bed, enjoying a few more moments of<lb />thoughtless inactivity and solitude.<lb /><lb /></p>

<p>ERIKA DIETRICK<lb /><lb />Mas Despacio, Por Favor<lb /><lb />Non-Fiction<lb /><lb />It is extremely lonely to be in a foreign country that speaks another lan-<lb />guage. Not only can I not communicate with people my age to make<lb />friends, but I cannot say the day-to-day things I need when talking to a<lb />cashier, a taxi driver, a police officer. Everyday tasks that were habitual and<lb />thoughtless in America are now a source of struggle and anxiety. People<lb />are not patient, and they are not understanding. After a handful of times of<lb />being laughed at in a store or scoffed at for not being able to speak Spanish<lb />correctly, you begin to find ways to avoid interaction. I donTt mean to do it,<lb />but I do. I hate getting looks that say ostupid American,? and itTs embar-<lb />rassing to be in a room full of Spanish-speaking people when you cannot<lb />understand a sales clerk or a waiter. ItTs embarrassing because even though<lb />Spanish is not my first language, people hear my rudimentary sentence<lb />structure and just assume that ITm stupid. They donTt think, oOh, sheTs just<lb />learning how to speak another language, and she doesnTt know how to say<lb />much yet.? No, they laugh"and not in a loving, poor-girl-itTs-okay-we-un-<lb />derstand way, but in a youTre-an-American-and-you-obviously-donTt-know-<lb />any-Spanish,-you re-not-wanted-here kind of way. Not everyone, of course,<lb />but a lot of people. A tip from one of my Spanish professors? Just tell them to<lb />speak more slowly so that you can understand them, she said. Mads despacio, por favor.<lb />For asking them to speak more slowly, I get the double prize of a harsh<lb />laugh and an eye roll.<lb /><lb />I have always felt sorry for people in America who donTt know how to<lb /><lb />speak English for this very same reason, but now I can truly feel their pain.<lb />People in America scoff, and they like to say, oWhy donTt they just learn our<lb />language?? Well, I have taken up that challenge in another country, and the<lb />answer is this: you canTt learn a language overnight, and many of the people<lb />around you arenTt going to help you along the way. Many of the people<lb />around you are going to make you feel worthless and stupid""many of the<lb />people around you are going to try to scam you and take advantage of you.<lb />Many of the people around you are going to tell you to go back where you<lb />came from, and many of the people around you are going to call you names<lb />that they think that you canTt understand.<lb /><lb />oSo, who cares?? say some people. oWho cares if they think you're stu-<lb />pid?? Well, thatTs a lot easier to say when youTre surrounded by other<lb />English-speaking people. ~UhatTs a lot easier to say when youTre not com-<lb />pletely on your own, without family or friends, without familiar ways of life<lb />and social customs, without a place where you can return to at night and<lb />recharge your confidence.<lb /><lb />Those people are right-"you shouldn't let other people make you feel stu-<lb />pid. But thatTs a lot easier said than done.<lb /><lb />116 | Non-Fiction<lb /><lb /></p>
