President <lb />Bush complemented an action plan for about one-month <lb />before bombings began in Afghanistan Sunday. <lb /><lb />Today mark's one-month since the attacks and the <lb />nation is trying to get back to normalcy. <lb />Students, faculty and staff share their concerns, <lb />feelings and opinions. <lb /><lb />"On the surface lives have sorta gone back to normal, <lb />said Rev. Scott Wilkinson of the Methodist Student <lb />Center. "Right after the attack I received a lot of questions <lb />as to what it meant. Participation grew, but lately I'm <lb />seeing a decline. |] think many students had put their <lb />studies on hold, and know they're realizing they've <lb />got to buckle-down. Many were stuck to the television, <lb />and 1 think they realized it wasn't healthy, so now <lb />they're focusing on other things to get their mind off <lb />of the event." <lb /><lb />According to Wilkinson, the bombings in Afghanistan <lb />have not caused much student reaction. <lb /><lb />"T think on Sept. 11 we went through so much anxiety <lb />and stress that we're not ready for more. It's possible that <lb />many have put the bombings out of their mind because <lb />they are not exactly affected, he said. <lb /><lb />Senior David Alisbrook, a member the Baptist Student <lb />Union, agreed. <lb /><lb />"Since the bombings began I have not seen much <lb />difference since everything began on Sept. 11. There's <lb />more participation and our Bible sessions are bigger. | <lb />think many are coping well, said Allsbrook. <lb /><lb />Sadie Cox, student government association (SGA) <lb />president agreed. <lb /><lb />"Spirits seem to be better, but you can still tell <lb />that things are not the same," said Cox. "As far as the <lb />bombings go, I think many students are against it. I <lb />think the chalk writings around ae are a healthy <lb />way for them to express themselves." <lb /><lb />Aside from chalk writings, the university has offered <lb />several forums to discuss emotions and terrorism. <lb /><lb />According to Garrie Moore, vice chancellor of <lb />Student Life, students are "extremely appreciative" of <lb />the forums. <lb /><lb />"I've seen the students embrace the issue and each <lb />other. They've truly showed they care for each other by <lb />lending a helping hand," said Moore. <lb /><lb />Nell Lewis, director of the Ledonia Wright Cultural <lb />Center, agreed. <lb /><lb />"I think the university, as a whole, has been promptly <lb />responsive to the issues that the attack has created," <lb />Lewis said. "Our campus community is extremely close-<lb />knit and supportive of each other and the external <lb />community." <lb /><lb />Terror takes toll <lb /><lb />Attack on America keeps <lb />some students grounded <lb /><lb />LINDSEY ORTEL <lb />STAFF WRITER <lb /><lb />As students anxiously wait the <lb /><lb />adjourning of classes Friday, marking <lb /><lb />the beginning of fall break, many are <lb /><lb />nervous about traveling because of <lb /><lb />the recent events that took place in <lb />our country. <lb /><lb />"1 am staying in North Carolina <lb /><lb />during fall break, but if I was to go <lb /><lb />home to New York I would choose <lb /><lb />to drive," said sophomore Dante <lb /><lb />Robinson. "I would not feel safe to <lb /><lb />fly." <lb /><lb />Sophomore Laurel Proctor dis-<lb /><lb />agreed with the safety issues and <lb /><lb />said she is planning on flying across <lb /><lb />the country to Arizona to visit her <lb /><lb />boyfriend. <lb /><lb />"Tam a little nervous about flying, <lb /><lb />but I think that now is a safer time <lb /><lb />to fly than before because of the <lb /><lb />tightened security at airports, said <lb /><lb />Proctor. <lb /><lb />The heinous terrorist attacks of <lb /><lb />Sept. 11 were the beginning of a ripple <lb /><lb />effect that spread across our nation <lb /><lb />and altered "normal" life. <lb /><lb />Junior Megan Beale said that she <lb /><lb />would have felt comfortable to fly <lb /><lb />before our country began to bomb <lb /><lb />Afghanistan. She said she fears retali-<lb /><lb />ation and other attacks similar to the <lb /><lb />ones in New York, Washington, D.C. <lb /><lb />and Pennsylvania. <lb /><lb />"T will eventually fly again, but <lb /><lb />not right now," said Beale. <lb /><lb />According to The Los Angeles <lb /><lb />Times, hotels, resorts and airline <lb /><lb />company profits have plunged to <lb /><lb />record lows; an unusual event for <lb /><lb />this time of theTyear when travel and <lb /><lb />Lewis said, in addition to open communication, the <lb />professionals of the university of are working closely with <lb />Chancellor William Muse to make sure that the campus <lb />remains aware of any new issues or concerns that may <lb />occur in response to the terrorist attacks. <lb /><lb />Lynn Roder, director of the Center for Counseling <lb />and Student Development, said the center is available <lb />for students. <lb /><lb />"It is normal for to feel anxious. | recommend that <lb />students talk to their friends. If they find that they are <lb />having trouble functioning, like sleeping and eating, <lb />they should come taik to us," Roder said. <lb /><lb />Students that need to talk about their emotions, <lb />feelings or concerns can call the Center for Counseling <lb />and Student Development at 328-6661. Extended hours <lb />are available. <lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at <lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com. <lb /><lb />Chalk writings about terrorism and peace fill the sidewalks of campus. Students express themselves <lb />in response to the bombings in Afghanistan, which began on Sunday. <lb /><lb />on fall break VOICE sponsors roundtables on race <lb /><lb />A student packs his vehicle for fall break. Many students have <lb />choosen to drive to their destination, rather than fly. <lb /><lb />business is slowly increasing back to <lb /><lb />Sophomore Chelsea Donovan<lb /><lb />normal, as more people are begin-<lb /><lb />agreed and said she found a less<lb /><lb />ning to travel again. <lb /><lb />traveled way to get to Washington,<lb /><lb />"The weekend after Parents <lb /><lb />IDK,<lb /><lb />Weekend at ECU was slow, but we <lb /><lb />"Tam taking the Amtrak Train <lb /><lb />are not usually affected by the <lb /><lb />out of Raleigh. The groups will meet for five <lb />two-hour sessions to discuss issues <lb />surrounding race relations. At the <lb />end of the study, each group will <lb />come up with a list of statements <lb />and a plan of action to initiate more <lb />cultural awareness in the city. <lb /><lb />Harris said an example of this <lb />may be a new cultural center and <lb />museum in downtown Greenville. <lb /><lb />The roundtables are a continua-<lb />tion of the Coffee in the Kitchen <lb />(CITK) program, which discussed <lb />race relations. <lb /><lb />If you are interested in discus-<lb />sions concerning diversity and rela-<lb />tions, contact the Ledonia Wright -<lb />Cultural Center for more information <lb />at 328-1680. <lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at <lb /><lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com. <lb /><lb />by<lb /><lb />Dane<lb /><lb />Schuckman<lb /><lb />photograph<lb /><lb />hotel businesses are usually at their have other options for getting home <lb /><lb />This news writer can be contacted at<lb /><lb />reaching destination<lb /><lb />peak. or another for <lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com. The original voice <lb />for Shaggy was disc jockey, Casey <lb />Kasem. <lb /><lb />Since the early 1980s, Innes had <lb />struck up a friendship with Messick, <lb />his idol since childhood. <lb /><lb />As a teenager, Innes hosted a <lb />radio show in Poplar Bluff and cailed <lb />to put Messick on his show. After <lb /><lb />College dropout <lb />job to CEO status <lb /><lb />WILLARD, Ohio (AP) -When <lb />Cory Washburn ran out of money, <lb />he decided he had no choice in <lb />1992 but to drop out of Heidel-<lb />berg College in Ohio. He got a <lb />job delivering and then making <lb />pizzas. <lb /><lb />Now Washburn, 31, is chief <lb />executive officer of the pizza <lb />company that gave him a job. In <lb />August, he became East of Chicago <lb />Pizza Co.Ts first CEO. <lb /><lb />After leaving college, | wasnTt <lb />sure exactly what | wanted to <lb />do,he said. <lb /><lb />A friend of a friend was <lb />becoming the manager of a new <lb />East of Chicago store in the Tiffin <lb />Mall (Tiffin, Ohio), and he said, <lb />~Maybe you can buy some time <lb />before you decide what youTre <lb />going to do. <lb /><lb />At that time, the pizza chain <lb />was still in the formative stage. <lb /><lb />Founder and owner L. Scott <lb />Granneman had opened his <lb />second pizza restaurant in the <lb />northern Ohio town Willard, <lb />about 50 miles west of Cleveland, <lb />when he remembered that early in <lb />his foodservice career a Customer <lb />had told him that his pizza was <lb />the best pizza east of Chicago. <lb /><lb />Granneman used that com-<lb />ment to name his company, which <lb />began franchising in 1991. <lb /><lb />Washburn found out that <lb />he liked the pizza business and <lb />decided he was with a company <lb />he could grow with. <lb /><lb />TY called the president of the <lb />company. I was very ambitious <lb /><lb />that, InnesT inaugural interview every <lb />time he started a job at a new radio <lb />station was with Messick. The two <lb />eventually performed interviews in <lb />character, Messick as Scooby and <lb />Innes as Shaggy. <lb /><lb />Messick told him, DonTt let the <lb />people at Hanna-Barbera know you <lb />do that voice, I'll lose my gig, Innes <lb />says. <lb /><lb />rides entry-level <lb /><lb />and I said | thought this company <lb />had a real formula for success. <lb />I really wanted a chance, Wash-<lb />burn said. Now, looking back, it <lb />seems. a little odd. <lb /><lb />He (Granneman) had met <lb />me but didnTt know me real well. <lb />But he said, ~Keep learning, and <lb />we'll keep our eye on you. <lb /><lb />Washburn soon got his <lb />chance. A new franchisee, John <lb />Adams, began training at the <lb />Tiffin restaurant with plans to <lb />open a Fremont location. Wash-<lb />burn teamed. up with Adams <lb />and became manager of the new <lb />store. <lb /><lb />Tt was exciting because the <lb />franchisee had not really been <lb />involved with pizza before, <lb />Washburn said. <lb /><lb />J remember living there, <lb />practically, for the first four or <lb />five weeks, working seven days <lb />a week open to close. I certainly <lb />was exhausted. <lb /><lb />Toward the end of 1993, <lb />Washburn called Granneman <lb />again, and this time he received <lb />a corporate job offer. <lb /><lb />He was promoted to director <lb />of operations, traveling constantly <lb />helping open new East of Chicago <lb />restaurants. <lb /><lb />Last year, he was named the <lb />companyTs first vice president of <lb />operations. <lb /><lb />East of Chicago Pizza now <lb />operates more than 135 stores <lb />with more than 3,000 employees <lb />in Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, <lb />Virginia and Florida. <lb /><lb />But it took more than a friendship <lb />with Messick to land the job. <lb /><lb />Innes made a spoof of Alabama's <lb />song, Shagging on the Boulevard <lb />called Shaggy on the Boulevard, <lb />that became a hit on WYNK, the <lb />Baton Rouge radio station where <lb />Innes works, <lb /><lb />After much pestering from fans, <lb />Innes called Hanna-Barbera, the <lb /><lb />Madden 2002: <lb /><lb />MADDEN 2002 <lb /><lb />System: Sony PlayStation <lb /><lb />2 <lb />Maker: EA Sports <lb />Available now <lb /><lb />(AP) -If there was a silver lining <lb />to the cloud surrounding the launch <lb />of the PlayStation 2, it was EA Sports, <lb />which managed to deliver a near-<lb />flawless game of football to PS2 coun-<lb />try while other companies offered <lb />up nothing but delays. <lb /><lb />A year later, not much has <lb />changed about the best football game <lb />ever made, except that it is better. <lb />Madden 2002 will feel extremely <lb />familiar to fans of last yearTs game, <lb />but some subtle and not-so-subtle <lb />improvements make the game a most <lb />worthy second helping for anyone <lb />who remotely enjoys the game of <lb />football. <lb /><lb />First things first: The player <lb />models no longer stare straight ahead <lb />like zombies. For some reason that <lb />drove everyone crazy last year, so <lb />letTs just get that out of the way. <lb /><lb />Little changes like this have been <lb />made all over the place, and Mad-<lb />denTs overall presentation, while <lb />similar to its excellent predecessor, <lb />features plenty of new touches and <lb />gusto. Between-play cinemas and <lb />replays are more prevalent, actual <lb />NFL coaches roam the sidelines, and <lb />the whole package comes together, <lb />both visually and aurally, in a more <lb />seamless fashion than before. <lb /><lb />Many of these touches and <lb />improvements were on display in <lb />EATs recently released NCAA 2001, <lb />but while that game captured the <lb />college experience like lightning ina <lb />bottle, Madden presents the harsher <lb />pro game with more polish, more <lb />noise and less forgiveness. Everything <lb />about Madden, right down to the <lb /><lb />creator of Scooby-Doo, and played <lb />the song. <lb /><lb />Call it amazi g luck, Messick <lb />was retiring and H qna-Barbera was <lb />looking for a new voice of Scooby. <lb />The company hired Innes within <lb />a week. <lb /><lb />To be able to step into those <lb />paws, those are some big paws to <lb />fill, Innes says. <lb /><lb />near flawless <lb /><lb />in-game menus and play selection <lb />screens, feels sped-up and a little <lb />cold, and the on-field ac » i <lb />louder and much more raucous. <lb />Similarly, the announcing team of <lb />Pat Summeral and John Madden is <lb />less friendly than NCAATs trio, and <lb />SummeralTs painfully stiff delivery <lb />is authentic, but hard to endure. <lb /><lb />As far as game play is concerned <lb />Madden 2002 plays like a Madden <lb />game should play. The series has <lb />largely kept the same system for <lb />the past 11 years while changing <lb />everything around it, and this year <lb />is no exception. As usual, EA goes <lb />for realism over speed, and the <lb />control scheme, despite being busy, <lb />is easy to pick up and doesnTt force <lb />you to perform any arcane button <lb />combinations. If youTve played any <lb />Madden game on any system before, <lb />this one should feel like second <lb />nature after a game or two. <lb /><lb />Madden features exhibition and <lb />season play, as well as the best <lb />multiple-season dynasty mode in <lb />the business. ~ <lb /><lb />The create-a-player. mode is <lb />back, and there are a large number <lb />of teams from which you can <lb />choose, including the current crop <lb />of NFL teams, the expansion Hous-<lb />ton Texans, the entire NFL Europe <lb />and many teams from the past five <lb />decades. <lb /><lb />[ea] <lb /><lb />Restaurant<lb /><lb />ELTORO <lb /><lb />Announcing late nite delivery<lb /><lb />You know, no task is ever too big when done <lb /><lb />by all.
