TEC would <lb />like to wish Coach Logan and the team the very <lb />best as they take on the Tar Heels. <lb /><lb />Historically, we haven't been all that successful <lb />against the squad. The last time we did play <lb />was in 1981 and the Tar Heels beat us 56-0. <lb /><lb />We think that itTs just about time to claim a <lb />victory. Granted, the Heels look pretty good this <lb />year with crucial wins against Florida State and <lb />NC State, but one thing about the Pirates .. no <lb />one can ever know what to expect. <lb /><lb />Miami learned very quickly in the fall of 1999 <lb />that our Pirates just donTt give up, especially <lb />when it comes to an in-state rival like Carolina. <lb /><lb />Although we may not have much fan support <lb />at Kenan, there will be a huge fan base in <lb />Greenville and across the country cheering <lb />the team on. <lb /><lb />ECU has some powerful weapons ... we have <lb />David Garrard and Leonard Henry racking <lb />up yards in the offensive category and some <lb />powerful senior leaders on the defense. <lb /><lb />Carolina does have some weak points. They <lb />have a losing record this season and a new <lb />coach. Though they are an ACC team, we have <lb />confidence that our'team will prevail. <lb /><lb />And hey, if they donTt pull off a victory, we <lb />always have another match up in 2008 ... at <lb />Dowdy Ficklen Stadium and we know we'll <lb />be ready then. <lb /><lb />-oa shall make no law resp ting <lb /><lb />an establishment of religion, or prohibit <lb /><lb />free exercise ~thereof: or abridging the tre <lb /><lb />of speech, or of the press; or the tight oft 16 <lb /><lb />people peaceably to assemble, and to petition <lb /><lb />government fora redress of grievances.T <lb /><lb />-Frst Amendment ofthe Constittion oftthe United States of <lb /><lb />§ <lb /><lb />TEC encourages all students to take an active role in the <lb /><lb />Effort will take strong Liberals see hopein public's <lb />leadership new affection for government <lb /><lb />KNIGHT RIDDER/TRIBUNE NEWS porting terrorists, as the Taliban have LARRY EICHEL <lb />SERVICE done for years, is effectively a terrorist is better spent by government than <lb />regime, and the United States does The days of horror and sadness by individuals. <lb /><lb />One could almost hear the drum-not negotiate with terrorists. have given way to a time of ques-Some activists on the left see <lb />beat Tuesday of America marching They have no moral inhibition tions. in this moment the potential for a <lb />to war. on the slaughter of the innocent, What sort of military action is political watershed. <lb /><lb />It is not a comforting sound, British Prime Minister Tony Blair being planned, and when will it One of them is Roger Hickey. <lb />not to President George W. The movie is carried <lb />by quality performances by the cast, <lb />especially Freeman (who has excelled <lb />in similar roles in the past), Potter, <lb />and newcomer Mika Boorem. <lb /><lb />There are also a handful of com-<lb />pelling and inventive scenes, par-<lb />ticularly the kidnap scene and the <lb />ransom exchange scene, and in these <lb />few instances the movie pretends to <lb />be the thriller it was hyped to be. The <lb />action is tainted, though, by a lack <lb />of build-up and computer-generated <lb />stunts that are too obviously phony. <lb /><lb />Basically, the film is the same old <lb />detective thriller that weTve been <lb />seeing for the last ten years. We've got to keep it continue, I <lb />still have a lot of years in my body. <lb />The Cubs need more than Sosa <lb />to do that, though. Rookie Juan Cruz <lb />allowed only four hits in the first five <lb />innings. But the Reds got to him in <lb />the sixth inning. <lb />After Todd Walker singled, Wilton <lb />Guerrero hit a chopper to left that <lb />Rondell White bobbled. Walker <lb />reached third on the error, and Guer-<lb />rero went to second. <lb />Walker scored on GriffeyTs <lb />groundout, and Young sent the first <lb />pitch he saw into the center field <lb />stands for a two-run homer that tied <lb />the game. <lb />The Reds struck again in the <lb />ninth. With two outs, Dunn sent <lb />FarnsworthTs 1-0 pitch over the wall <lb />in right-center and out of the park. <lb />Counting his minor league <lb />games, Dunn has 53 homers in 157 <lb />games this year. <lb />Matt Walker will once again be in <lb />the line-up for the Pirates. <lb />In the annual <lb />Pentathlon, a five event scrimmage-<lb />like race against time, Miller broke <lb />the previous record for the 100 Fly <lb />with a new time of 51.9. <lb />The women swimmers are coming <lb />off of a highly successful season, <lb />in which they finished the year 9-2 <lb />overall and 6-1 in the CAA. Most of <lb />the Lady Pirates that swam on last <lb />yearTs team will return in 2001, and <lb />a strong class of freshman should <lb />provide a boost of success. <lb />We had a good season last year, <lb />said senior Allison Terrill. We gradu-<lb />ated some of our top swimmers, so <lb />we had to make the call and recruit <lb />some good swimmers for this year. <lb />We have a strong team we just have <lb />to stay healthy. <lb />Senior tri-captains Dana Fuller, <lb />Courtney Foster and Allison Terrill <lb />will hold leadership responsibilities, <lb />as five freshmen join the Lady <lb />Pirates. <lb />We have a very strong senior <lb />class, Kobe said. This year, our <lb />girls team will be better than last <lb />yearTs championship team. We are <lb />really looking forward to our first <lb />year in Conference USA. <lb />On the womenTs side of the <lb />Pirate Pentathlon, new records were <lb />set in each event. Freshman Diane <lb />Parker did not waste any time plac-<lb />ing her name in some of the ECU <lb />record books. Parker broke the old <lb />record for the 200 IM by six seconds <lb />and went on to set new times in <lb />the100 Breast and 100 Free. <lb />Even though the Pirates will be <lb />racing amongst themselves today, <lb />the Purple and Gold meet will be a <lb />demonstration of what is to come <lb />out of Pirate swimming in 2001. <lb />This meet will be ran just like <lb />any of our other conference meets. <lb />ItTs a good experience for us to <lb />get into the format of the regular <lb />season, but everybody will be cheer-<lb />ing for everybody, Terrill said. <lb />This writer can be contacted at <lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com. <lb /><lb />id<lb /><lb />My Sisters Closet <lb /><lb />Upscale Resale Boutique <lb />754-2495 © Mon. -Sat. 10-5 <lb />(Former Furniture Liquidators Building) <lb />2810 E. 10th St. Suite C <lb />Greenville NC 27858<lb /><lb />At Mail Boxes Ete.
