While we <lb />analyze every aspect of the tragedy, we seem <lb />to have neglected all of the other stories that <lb />on any other Wednesday would be considered <lb />newsworthy. <lb /><lb />A great deal has happened around the world <lb />since the two planes crashed into the World <lb />Trade Center and one into the Pentagon. Last <lb />week, members of the World Trade Organization <lb />formaliy cleared Taiwan for admission. British <lb />Tornado warplanes bombed a southern Iraqi <lb />antiaircraft, retaliating for hostile activities by <lb />iraq against planes patrolling a no-fly zone. <lb /><lb />in the United States, the attack was not the <lb />only tragedy last week. In Port Isabel, Texas, a <lb />barge and tugboat slammed into a causeway <lb />leaving five people dead while three or four <lb />remain unaccounted for. <lb /><lb />Eight student athletes from the University of <lb />Wyoming were killed when a truck driver drifted <lb />into the wrong lane and collided with the sport <lb />utility vechicle that was carrying all eight of <lb />the deceased. <lb /><lb />itTs difficult to remember that anything else is <lb />taking place in the world. When we wake in <lb />the morning and turn the television on, news <lb />programs are fixated on the latest developments <lb /><lb />Right now, we are all angry -<lb />angry and frustrated. It is under-<lb />standable. We have seen thousands <lb />of lives snuffed out in an instant by <lb />madmen who have no compunction <lb />whatsoever about killing the old, the <lb />young, the weak, and the innocent. <lb />To the extent that this anger can <lb />be channeled and used to fuel the <lb />national will to act decisively against <lb />those responsible for this nightmare, <lb />it is just and good. <lb /><lb />But there is another side to this <lb />anger, a side that is the very antith-<lb />esis of everything America should <lb />represent. Already, we are seeing this <lb />anger turned inward to attack fellow <lb />Americans whose only connection <lb />with the attackers is a common <lb />ethnicity and faith. In classrooms <lb />and hallways, on buses and elevators, <lb />you begin to hear it; the use of the <lb />word they. Suddenly, all Arabs <lb />are suspect, or all Muslims. They <lb />have to watched. They canTt be <lb />trusted. <lb /><lb />This has happened before. During <lb />World War II, thousands of Japanese <lb />Americans were stripped of every-<lb />thing they had and placed in intern-<lb />ment camps for the duration of the <lb />war. This happened despite the fact <lb />that virtually all of them proved to <lb />be loyal Americans, who loved their <lb />new country as much as you or I. <lb />In fact, many of these same people <lb />later served with great distinction <lb />in the invasion of Italy, fighting and <lb />dying for the freedoms they and we <lb />cherished. And they did this fight-<lb />ing and dying while their families <lb />were imprisoned behind barbed <lb />wire fences in the U.S. How many <lb />of us (us being white, Anglo-Saxon <lb />Protestants) would have done that? <lb /><lb />the recordT? <lb /><lb />irresponsible political posturing of <lb /><lb />a bygone era, have stuck with us <lb />because even those who opposed <lb /><lb />them always supposed we'd fix them <lb /><lb />later. <lb />Later has arrived. There is a <lb /><lb />renewed recognition that the gov-<lb /><lb />ernmentTs foremost responsibility is <lb /><lb />in New York and Washington, D.C. When we <lb /><lb />got to sleep at night, we get one more glimpse <lb /><lb />at Osama bin Ladin as some news program <lb /><lb />provides his latest statement. <lb /><lb />We're not blaming the news for their selection <lb /><lb />Can't anyone but Bonds break <lb /><lb />protecting Americans from attack, <lb />is considered by his own teammates to win the MVP award last year. His and that other issues can and must<lb /><lb />of stories, we realize that the recent attacks JAMES IAN ROBSON <lb /><lb />were like a page out of a Tom Clancy novel. <lb />But as Americans, we need to do all we can <lb />to acknowledge that there is hurt, pain and <lb />suffering everywhere. We need to realize that <lb />there are also stories waiting to be told that <lb />are full of happiness as well as hope. We need <lb />to recognize that we will go on " that we are <lb />going on. <lb /><lb />We have all watched in awe of <lb />Barry BondsT stride towards the MLB <lb />home run record this baseball season. <lb />But to be honest, does anyone, and | <lb />mean anyone, really want to see him <lb />break the record? <lb /><lb />Now donTt get me wrong, what <lb />we are seeing is history, and anyone <lb />that can sustain this kind of streak, <lb />at the pace at which he is doing so, <lb />deserves to reach their goal which <lb />he should do in a few games. He is <lb />an MVP, all-star and a great baseball <lb />player. <lb /><lb />lam merely a spectator and a fan <lb />of the game. I grew up on baseball <lb />being played as a team sport, in <lb />which all work towards one goal, as <lb />a team. It is well known that Bonds <lb /><lb />Yet, despite the lessons of history, <lb />we are again giving vent to bigotry <lb />and hate. WhoTs to blame? The Arabs <lb />some scream as they spit at innocent <lb />children on the street. The Muslims <lb />some scream as they attack places <lb />of worship. The Reverends Farwell <lb />and Robertson now tell us that it is <lb />the ACLU and the Liberals and the <lb />Homosexuals who have brought this <lb />wrath of God on us. We must stop <lb /><lb />this now, before it goes any further. <lb />We cannot allow the insane terrorists <lb />who attacked our nation last Tuesday <lb />to divide us in this way. If we do, we <lb />grant them victory. <lb /><lb />The Attorney General has made <lb />clear that any act of violence or <lb />discrimination against a person <lb />based on the perceived race, religion <lb />or national origin of that person <lb />is contrary to our fundamental prin-<lb />ciples and the laws of the United <lb />States. His statement is a reminder to <lb />all Americans that Americans of Arab <lb />or South Asian decent and people of <lb />the Muslim faith were also injured <lb />and killed in TuesdayTs attacks. In <lb />addition, they also are -along with <lb />other Americans -involved in relief <lb />operations, and other efforts to allevi-<lb />ate suffering. Any threats of violence <lb />or discrimination against Arab or <lb />Muslim Americans or Americans of <lb />South Asian descents are not just <lb />wrong and un-American, but also <lb />are unlawful and will be treated as <lb />such, <lb /><lb />-Statement from Assistant Attorney <lb /><lb />General Ralph F. Boyd Jr. <lb /><lb />Daniel Ketchum <lb /><lb />Graduate Student <lb /><lb />History <lb /><lb />Recent attacks will turn us into <lb />a new breed of Americans <lb /><lb />AMY RIDENOUR <lb /><lb />Centuries are measured in books <lb />by dates and in minds by events. In <lb />the national memory, the terrorist <lb />war on the United States that began <lb />Sept. 11, 2001 will mark the begin-<lb />ning of the 21st century. We think of <lb />the 20th century beginning not <lb />in 1901, but with World War I. A <lb />fitting beginning, because in World <lb />War I the United States transformed <lb />itself from a nation turned inward <lb />from the world to a nation that still <lb />dominates the earth. <lb /><lb />Our biggest horizon had been <lb />the American West. Our military <lb />challenges had always been centered <lb />in North America. As World War <lb />I began, so did a new century for <lb />Americans: one in which our outlook <lb />was profoundly different from what <lb />it had been before. <lb /><lb />Throughout the 20th century, <lb /><lb />Americans felt safe at home. We <lb /><lb />weren't always safe -particularly <lb /><lb />after the dawn of the atomic age -<lb /><lb />but we felt safe. Nuclear war, while <lb /><lb />possible, was unthinkable, and so <lb /><lb />we largely were untouched by its <lb /><lb />specter. Terrorism happened in other <lb /><lb />countries, to other people. To 20th-<lb /><lb />century Americans, America was an <lb /><lb />invulnerable fortress. At home, we <lb /><lb />were safe. <lb /><lb />Sept. 11 ushered in a new era. <lb /><lb />We're 21st-century Americans now. <lb /><lb />We know, not just in our heads, <lb /><lb />where weTve long acknowledged it, <lb /><lb />but in our hearts, where we never, <lb />did, that it can happen here. <lb /><lb />As we mourn the victims of these <lb />terrorist attacks and the tremendous <lb />burdens of loss faced by their families <lb />and those who knew them well, we <lb />also will mourn the loss of our sense <lb />of safety. <lb /><lb />We also may expect to mourn the <lb />loss of some of the daily freedoms <lb />we once took casually for granted, as <lb />this new war will for most Americans <lb />be measured in the inconvenience <lb />of security measures that most likely <lb />will last for years to come. But we <lb />can take heart in the fact that ourT <lb />new awareness of danger will spur <lb />us to act in ways that someday may -<lb />save many lives. Democrats and <lb />Republicans together are taking a <lb />fresh look at methods and technolo-<lb />gies that can help protect us. <lb /><lb />Measures to acquire intelligence > <lb />of terrorist activities and early warn-<lb />ings of future acts will be increased , <lb />and improved. Deployment of a <lb />missile defense system to protect <lb />Americans from what would be even <lb />worse than what we've just suffered <lb /><lb />-a nuclear attack -will become <lb />less controversial and receive more <lb />bipartisan support. Immediately after , <lb />the Vietnam War it was fashionable <lb />to downplay the need for intelligence <lb />services and to pretend that America <lb />could defend itself without getting <lb />its hands dirty. Laws enacted during <lb />that time have hobbled our means of <lb />protecting ourselves ever since. These _ <lb />dangerous policies, reflective of the <lb />as a prima donna, and if asked if the <lb />word team were spelled with an <lb />1, he would say it probably is. <lb /><lb />Not because he is ignorant, but <lb />just because thatTs how much he cares <lb />only about himself. He is openly <lb />arrogant, and has been referred to by <lb />Sports Mlustrated Magazine as an MTV <lb />Diva, only with bigger earrings. <lb /><lb />Even when Bonds hit his 500 <lb />home run, (a milestone that only a <lb />few ballplayers have ever reached) <lb />only the Giants bat-girl came to <lb />congratulate him at home plate. He <lb />doesnTt eat, celebrate, or even show <lb />up for team pictures with the team. <lb />Bonds went so far as to have his <lb />entourage call the commissioner of <lb />baseball's office to ensure that he, <lb />not teammate Jeff Kent, was going <lb /><lb />caveat; he needed to know because <lb />if he did not, then he was leaving <lb />town for good. <lb /><lb />Arguably, | believe we saw the <lb />best season of MLBTs long existence <lb />three years ago. The ongoing battle <lb />between two rivals Mark Mc Gwire <lb />and Sammy Sosa, was something <lb />special. What was even more special <lb />was the friendship that the two made <lb />throughout their race for the record. <lb />We all have seen the famous video <lb />after Mc Gwire broke the record, <lb />of his friend and rival Sammy Sosa <lb />being one of the first to congratulate <lb />and hug his competitor. Now that <lb />was basebail,.that was our pastime at <lb />its best. It is just too bad that Barry <lb />Bonds is what baseball fans must <lb />settle for now. <lb /><lb />wait. <lb /><lb />The steps we take now may <lb />at some future date save millions of <lb />lives. In the immediate aftermath of <lb />these terrorist attacks, ourT public is <lb />unified and our attention is focused <lb />on the task before us. But in coming <lb />weeks, comprehensive nonstop tele-<lb />vision coverage of this feral terrorist <lb />butchery will cease. We'll be tempted <lb />to turn our thoughts to more pleasant <lb />things. We must not succumb until <lb />the task at hand is complete. <lb /><lb />At another scene of horrific <lb />carnage and war President Lincoln <lb />spoke words that helped us once. <lb />They can again. <lb /><lb />We must here highly resolve <lb />that these dead shall not have died <lb />in vain. <lb /><lb />TEC encourages all students to take an active role in the university as well as their community and state governments. <lb />Intramural Flag Football kicks off <lb /><lb />League champions <lb />defend titles <lb /><lb />SHOMARI T. KEE <lb /><lb />STUDENT RECREATION REPORTS <lb /><lb />There are many rivalries that <lb />exist inside the college football world <lb />such as Florida St. versus Florida, <lb />Oklahoma/Nebraska and ECU/State, <lb />but none of these are as pride laden <lb />or as exciting to watch as the epic <lb />battles of Red versus Gold. Yes, that <lb />is right, ITm talking about Intramural <lb />Sports on the campus of ECU. <lb /><lb />Hopefully, you have participated, <lb />or at least heard about the rivalries <lb />that the Blount Recreational Com-<lb />plex garnishes. <lb /><lb />The competition is back for the <lb />2001 season, and the Student Rec-<lb />reation Center is looking forward <lb />to providing a good one for ECU's <lb />students, faculty and staff. <lb /><lb />Last year, many teams competed <lb />in the fast paced, action-packed <lb />intramural sport of flag football. This <lb />year should be even more exciting as <lb />the defending champions from 2001 <lb />try to hold on to their titles. <lb /><lb />The menTs Independent Gold <lb />League is the most competitive one <lb />inside of the flag football program. <lb />Most of the players share the same <lb />play to win spirit that exists in all <lb />collegiate sports.
