Obviously all <lb />sexual assaults canTt be prevented, <lb />but hopefully this week will elimi-<lb />nate them.� <lb /><lb />Senior Terra Steinbeiser said the <lb />week is very important. <lb />Prevention is the key,� said <lb />Steinbeiser. <lb /><lb />Credle said students should <lb />always be aware of their surround-<lb />ings and trust their instincts. <lb /><lb />Most rapes involve alcohol,� <lb />she said. The caller said the <lb />man that had fired the gun had fled <lb />the scene and drove away in the <lb />vehicle. <lb /><lb />According to Bartlett, officers <lb />located the vehicle and apprehended <lb />the driver and shooter. <lb /><lb />Bartlett said the vehicle was <lb />searched and 9.7 grams of powder <lb />cocaine was found. <lb /><lb />The driver, William Whitby, 20, <lb />of Littleton, N.C. was arrested and <lb />charged with possession to sell and <lb />distribute and maintaining a vehicle <lb />with controlled substances. So much of what has occurred <lb />over the past week with the recent <lb />series of tragedies afflicting the <lb />nation, give us all more food for <lb />thought tied into our quality of life. <lb /><lb />In watching the video replays <lb />of the planes colliding into the <lb />World Trade Center in New York and <lb />seeing the aftermath of the devasta-<lb />tion there and at the Pentagon at <lb />Washington, DC -all of this had a <lb />surreal quality to it. These scenes <lb />reminded all of us of the horror and <lb />terror associated with the loss of <lb />innocent human lives especially as <lb />we listen too to the testimonies of <lb />people who were affected by the <lb />crisis, some who are close to us such <lb />as our friends, family or extended <lb />family. <lb /><lb />In my mind, all of this presents <lb />a sobering moment of reflection <lb />as we consider the reality of our <lb />vulnerability not only as a nation but <lb />as a community in crisis. The word <lb />crisis� in Asian characters is a com-<lb />bination of two words, danger� and <lb />opportunity.� And this perhaps best <lb /><lb />I would like to address all of the <lb />students with this letter. This past <lb />week has been a difficult time for all <lb />of us. There have been many positive <lb />contributions and collective efforts <lb />on ideas to help the situation. <lb /><lb />With this situation, we need to <lb />focus on coming together as a com-<lb />munity as opposed to discriminating <lb />and pointing fingers to other students <lb />because of their race or ethnicity. <lb />Acts of violence will not be toler-<lb />ated at East Carolina University <lb />or throughout the Greenville com-<lb />munity.
