September 13, 2001<lb /><lb />CE <lb /><lb />Students, staff mourn <lb /><lb />ECU Transit is adding four new buses to its fleet. <lb /><lb />New transit buses arrive <lb /><lb />Enhance transportation, <lb />aid in enrollment growth <lb /><lb />ANGELA HARNE <lb />NEWS EDITOR <lb /><lb />Two of the four transit buses to <lb />aid in transportation services arrived <lb />last week. <lb /><lb />According to Robert White, gen-<lb />eral manager of Transit Services, the <lb />43-passenger buses are replacing four <lb />of the buses that have been in use <lb />since the mid-80s. <lb /><lb />The replacement is long over-<lb />due, said White. <lb /><lb />Transit Advisor Scott Alford said <lb />the new buses are definitely an <lb />improvement of the current ones. <lb /><lb />They are like nothing we have <lb />owned before, said Alford. <lb />Senior Thomas Jernigan, a bus <lb />driver agreed. <lb />They are a step up from what we <lb />had, said Jernigan. <lb />It was definitely time for a <lb /><lb />replacement, but we are still far from <lb />where we need to be. <lb /><lb />Jernigan said Transit Services <lb />should be on a ten-year bus replace-<lb />ment system. <lb /><lb />Having buses from 1983, and <lb />just now replacing them is crazy, <lb />but at least itTs a starting point, <lb />he said. <lb /><lb />The buses came from the Blue <lb />Bird Company. <lb /><lb />In the past, ECU purchased buses <lb />from the Thomas Built Buses com-<lb />pany. <lb /><lb />According to Wood Davidson, <lb />assistant transit manager, Blue Bird <lb />made the best offer. Davidson said <lb />Transit Services developed a speck, <lb />which is a package describing the <lb />features of the bus. <lb /><lb />We put the package needs out <lb />and waited for a bid, said Davidson. <lb />Blue Bird had the lowest. <lb /><lb />According to Alford, the buses <lb />began serving the students Monday. <lb />We have to put on the ECU <lb />graphics, add extra radio equipment <lb /><lb />see BUS page A2 <lb /><lb />student transit reacts <lb /><lb />to ridership <lb /><lb />More buses added to <lb />routes, faster turnover <lb /><lb />DENNIS MITCHELL <lb />ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR <lb /><lb />Student transit passengers <lb />increase as students choose bus trans-<lb />portation over their own vehicles. <lb /><lb />More students are riding the <lb />bus, said Scott Alford, student transit <lb />adviser. : <lb /><lb />According to Alford, in order to <lb />cope with the influx of students <lb />riding the bus, Student Transit added <lb />a fourth bus to the commuter shuttle <lb />route one week into the semester. <lb /><lb />We are accessing the possibility <lb />of adding a fifth bus to the commuter <lb />shuttle, said Alford. <lb /><lb />According to Alford, Transit Ser-<lb />vices is also seeing an increase in <lb />the number of students on the off-<lb /><lb />increase <lb /><lb />campus routes. <lb /><lb />We do not have concrete num-<lb />bers for this semester because it is <lb />early, he said. <lb /><lb />Alford said last year, the Student <lb />Transit System had an estimated <lb />760,000 passengers on its regular <lb />routes. <lb /><lb />ThatTs about 5,000 passengers <lb />a day, Alford said. <lb /><lb />According to Robert White, stu-<lb />dent transit manager, about 45 <lb />student drivers are employed to <lb />handle the number of passengers. <lb /><lb />A student driver has the hardest <lb />job on campus, said White. Tt is <lb />very difficult to have to deal with <lb />5,000 students a day. <lb /><lb />According to White, dealing <lb />with traffic can also be a problem. <lb />Student driver Matt OTKelly <lb />agreed. <lb />Although this life is a little <lb /><lb />see TRANSIT page A2 <lb /><lb />victims <lb /><lb />Wright auditorium fills for <lb />memorial service <lb /><lb />ANGELA HARNE <lb />NEWS EDITOR <lb /><lb />Flocks of students, faculty and <lb />staff filled the Wright auditorium to <lb />lift their hearts and offer a prayer to <lb />the victims of the nationTs terrorist <lb />attack. <lb /><lb />The 1,510-seat auditorium filled <lb /><lb />quickly, while about 300 students, <lb /><lb />staff and faculty lined the walls, <lb /><lb />sat in the lobby and stood outside <lb /><lb />listening to a panel of speakers shed <lb /><lb />light on the situation. <lb /><lb />The memorial service opened <lb />with the display of the colors (Ameri-<lb />can flag) by the Color Guard and the <lb />singing of the National Anthem. <lb /><lb />Reverend Robert Clyde of the <lb /><lb />Baptist Student Union took the <lb /><lb />podium and led the audience in <lb /><lb />prayer. We must not coward <lb />against the cowards. <lb /><lb />Jordan Whichard, member of the <lb />ECU Board of Trustees, agreed. <lb /><lb />American stands on democracy, <lb />we say, worship and believe as we <lb />see fit, said Whichard. We must go <lb />about our freedom. You [students] <lb /><lb />must continue to experience and <lb />explore your liberties. <lb />Despite WhichardTs advice, stu-<lb /><lb />dents continue to deal with the shock <lb />of TuesdayTs events. <lb /><lb />There are no words for it, said <lb />senior Melissa Massey. It is unbeliev-<lb />able, but we must stick together. <lb /><lb />Senior Andre Crane agreed. <lb /><lb />We must protect our commu-<lb />nity, our state and our nation. It can <lb />start here at ECU and have a domino <lb />effect, said Crane. Most think that <lb />America is invincible. This is a wake <lb />up call. We need to appreciate life <lb />.. life is precious. <lb /><lb />The memorial service concluded <lb />with the singing of America the <lb />Beautiful. <lb /><lb />THE ECU STUDENT UNION CULTURAL AWARENESS COMMITTEE <lb />PRESENTS <lb /><lb />THE MYSTICAL <lb />ARTS OF TIBET <lb /><lb />SACRED Music SACRED DANCE <lb />FOR WORLD HEALING <lb /><lb />THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2001 <lb /><lb />8:00 PM WRIGHT AUDITORIUM <lb />~The Mystical Arts of Tibet tours, featuring the famed multiphonic singers of Drepung Loseling Monastery, have taken the world <lb />by storm. Endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as a means of promoting world peace and healing through sacred performing <lb />art, they have performed in many of America's greatest theaters and music halls. <lb /><lb />Ancient societies throughout the world conceived that ritual performance of sacred music and dance at auspicious times <lb />establishes communication with the higher powers of good and brings about healing on environmental, social and personal levels. <lb /><lb />The Mystical Arts of Tibet tour has three basic purposes: to make a contribution to world healing and peace movement through <lb />sacred art; to generate a greater awareness of the endangered Tibetan civilization; and to raise support for the refugee community <lb />in India. <lb /><lb />In a spirit of healing, compassion, and unity, the ECU Student Union <lb />Cultural Awareness Committee is providing FREE Admission to this event! <lb /><lb />NOTE: Seating will be a first-come, first-served basis. The doors will open at 7:00pm. If you already have purchased a ticket to this program and desire a refund, please present your tickets to the Central Ticket Office in Mendenhall; or <lb />you may consider your ticket purchase a gift to the community to help offset some of the costs associated with providing this wonderful program at a time when it has never been needed more. <lb /><lb />FOR MORE INFORMATION, CALL 1-800-ECU-ARTS <lb /><lb /></p>

In <lb /><lb />this article | will be focusing some <lb /><lb />attention on helping the trainee <lb /><lb />set some attainable goals for their <lb /><lb />training program. These goals will <lb /><lb />help in adding some specificity to <lb /><lb />how, when and where to achieve the <lb /><lb />desired training effects. <lb /><lb />At the initiation of a good train-<lb />ing program there are some impor-<lb />tant questions that must be asked <lb />by the trainee. The answers to said <lb />questions should help to clarify <lb />what is going to be accomplished <lb />and how. First and foremost among <lb />these questions would be, what is the <lb />purpose of the training? The answer <lb />to this question might take the form <lb />of: training for weight loss, strength, <lb />size, endurance, stress relief, etc. In <lb />any event there needs to be a clear <lb />focus on what is going to be the end <lb />result of training, in order to allow a <lb />clear path to be determined towards <lb />that goal. For instance, if the focus is <lb />on. endurance, strength, stress relief, <lb />athletic performance or other non-<lb />aesthetic goals, then the next step <lb />is to decide which areas of the gym <lb />will be most beneficial (we will <lb />explore this in the next article). <lb />However, if the focus is on aesthetic <lb />characteristics such as: losing body <lb />fat, gaining muscular hypertrophy <lb />(size), or balancing out the bodyTs <lb />proportionality (top vs. bottom, <lb />etc.), then a process needs to be <lb />determined to allow you to see what <lb />you want when you look in the <lb />mirror. This process should include <lb />critiquing your current bodyTs form <lb />to determine what your bodyTs skel-<lb />etal structure and metabolism will <lb />allow you to realistically attain. <lb /><lb />Begin the process of attaining <lb />your desired look by carefully critiqu-<lb />ing your physique. Take note of <lb />itTs overall proportionality. Look at <lb />whether your body holds more mass <lb /><lb />RYAN CARRELL <lb /><lb />YOGA INSTRUCTOR <lb /><lb />Warrior Pose <lb /><lb />BRAD FOUST <lb />PERSONAL TRAINER <lb /><lb />above or below the waist or in <lb />one area versus another. Take <lb />note of what areas your body is <lb />storing the highest amounts of <lb />fat and in what areas it is most <lb />muscular. This can be done by <lb />simply observing your body in <lb />a mirror, or by participating in <lb />a fitness assessment to identify <lb />the amount of fat your body <lb />stores in certain areas, and your <lb />circumferences. Once this is <lb />done some time should be taken <lb />to focus attention on your bodyTs <lb />metabolism and skeletal struc-<lb />ture in order to understand itTs <lb />specific structural dynamics and <lb />metabolic capacities. <lb /><lb />First, start out by figuring <lb />out what type of metabolism you <lb />have. A relatively unscientific <lb />way to do this is to take note <lb />of how quickly you gain or <lb />loose weight, and to what degree <lb />your body tends to store fat <lb />weight. Several guys came off <lb />the bench and stepped up to really <lb />help the team out. <lb /><lb />The Pirates are playing well, and <lb />they have been able to garnish some <lb />respect in the first few games this <lb />year. The season continues this week <lb />with a road trip that starts out against <lb />Louisville and ends with a match <lb />against Cal-Poly SLO. <lb /><lb />So far, injuries have plagued the <lb />Pirates and caused the lineup to <lb />change. There have been up to five <lb />freshmen starters for the Pirates <lb />first three games, but that was an <lb />expectation at the beginning of pre-<lb />season. <lb /><lb />Our team is very young and <lb />we have a few years to mature, <lb />said sophomore team captain Clyde <lb />Simms. <lb /><lb />Junior goalie RJ Marvinney is <lb />the oldest player out there but there <lb />have been a few surprises.
