<lb />Cia<lb /><lb />inion<lb /><lb />Shari'ah law,<lb />rape and you<lb /><lb />The more you know<lb /><lb />YAZID FINN<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Alright, folks! I am back from my self-imposed<lb />time out and have brought that change of pace a<lb />handful of you have been calling for. While this is<lb />the next to last issue of the semester, I decided to<lb />change the hat I normally draw my topics of dis-<lb />cussion from and spin a recently established wheel.<lb />Today Ts subject of interest just so happened to land<lb />on Shariah law!<lb /><lb />Sweet, I know, but please attempt to restrain _<lb /><lb />yourselves long enough to get through the next few<lb />paragraphs.<lb /><lb />Recently over in the good old Kingdom of Saudi<lb />Arabia, a woman and a male friend were sexually<lb />assaulted by a group of men. The woman was sen-<lb />tenced to prison and received lashes for being out<lb />unchaperoned with an unrelated male.<lb /><lb />This event has been brought to the forefront of<lb />news Web sites; human rights groups across the USA<lb />are jumping on the bandwagon (or boat) of good faith<lb />to cross the ocean and set things straight. I, however,<lb />feel this is a single case blown out of proportion,<lb />like so many things our short attention spans seem<lb />to latch onto,<lb /><lb />_ Thad the chance to ask a few brothers I am in<lb />contact with overseas for their input on the matter,<lb />and I was not surprised by their replies. In this case,<lb />the woman in question broke a law that carried con-<lb />sequences. She was given the chance to appeal the<lb />decision as one normally would in the United States,<lb />however, the woman declined and reported the<lb />incident to the media. Additionally, being a Shia in<lb />Saudi Arabia probably did not help. Still the sudden<lb />increased punishment for not following the appeal<lb />process is where the thulm (oppression) begins.<lb /><lb />. This piece, however, will not focus on the issue<lb />of rape as previously mentioned, but the umbrella<lb />of which the laws regarding the matter fall under.<lb />Right off the bat, allow me to clear a misconcep-<lb />tion and say that no country practices true Shari Tah<lb />Law. Saudi Arabia is close, but as my good friend<lb />HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey once remarked,<lb /> oIt can only be attributable to human error. ? The<lb />offenders should have been charged with adultery (if<lb />married) or spreading mischief amongst the lands,<lb />both punishable by death.<lb /><lb />- When someone says that opolitical extremists ?<lb />are attempting to implement Shariah law into a<lb />country in Europe, I normally laugh atthe thought.<lb />The definition of words these days are becoming so<lb />loose, they are molded to fit the liking of the user.<lb /><lb />This follows that no country practices true<lb />Democracy and I include the United States in this<lb />generalization. In the words of Lincoln, oA govern-<lb />ment of the people, by the people, for the people, ?<lb />so what exactly is the Electoral College? Oh yeah,<lb />that is right, the founding fathers specifically<lb />stated they felt the average citizen was incapable<lb />of making an educated decision in regards to their<lb />head of state.<lb /><lb />'. Before this topic becomes an epistemologist debate<lb />on the token of words in sentences, I will end it with<lb /> some statistics from the good old Interpol. The United<lb />States rates amongst the highest of countries listed in<lb />terms of rape cases, Saudi Arabia and Japan amongst<lb />the lowest. One in six women in the United States<lb />survived an attempted or completed rape. With these<lb />in mind, the number of rape cases in the United States<lb />has steadily declined in the last ten years.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />I love the atmosphere of game day, the noise<lb />of the crow, the unadulterated emotion in a packed<lb />stadium and my Pirates. I Tm from the class of 2004,<lb />with a vision for my alma mater.<lb /><lb />The pride level of Pirates, alumni, and fans<lb />alike is EXTREMELY high and with good reason,<lb />our Pirates are having a great football season.<lb /><lb />The energy emitted from the Pirate fans feeds<lb />our players. There is nothing like the rush we all<lb />get when the cannon goes off after.a score or the<lb />4th quarter raising of the NO QUARTER flag.<lb />But perhaps the most invigorating is when Jimi<lb />Hendrix starts rockin T out and our team emerges<lb />through the Purple Haze and rushes the field. And<lb />from that point is where the vision begins...<lb /><lb />I wish to change nothing about aforementioned<lb />entrance of our team onto Dowdy-Ficklen, merely<lb />add one more element; a concoction whose ingredi-<lb />ents include the swelling, smothering characteristic<lb />of the Wave and a Sea of Purple. ae<lb /><lb />The set-up only requires one thing; all Pirate<lb />Fans in attendance at Dowdy-Ficklen MUST wear<lb />PURPLE, UNDERNEATH whatever game day<lb />schwag they are planning to wear.<lb /><lb />The set-up: Purple Haze T plays, players storm<lb />field, purple smoke billows... beginning from where<lb />the purple smoke reaches the stands, Pirate fans, in the<lb />motion of a well executed wave, remove their top-layer<lb />of clothing to reveal the PURPLE underneath.<lb /><lb />The end result: Think oPenn State White Out, ?<lb />but Purple... A color-changing, wave of purple<lb />that engulfs 44,000 Pirate fans whose energy<lb />can be measured in GBPSIs (Goose Bumps Per<lb />Square Inch.)<lb /><lb />I understand that traditions are rarely planned<lb />and usually just come to fruition over time, but<lb />close your eyes and picture this. Do you see it?<lb />All that PURPLE! To make this happen we need<lb />support and buy-in. We need ideas on execution<lb />. and implementation...<lb /><lb />Thank you for your time. Everyone should know<lb />what oBeowulf ? is; if you don Tt, I Tm not explain-<lb />ing it, and I have always thought that it could be<lb />a great movie if it was done correctly [editor Ts<lb />note: Beowulf is an epic poem about a warrior<lb />(title character) that, among other richly details<lb />accounts: within. the context of the poem, has to<lb />battle a neighboring land Ts monster, monster Ts<lb />mother, and later, the dragon that plagued that<lb />land...It Ts complicated].<lb /><lb />It has all the elements a greatly exaggerated<lb />action movie should have, e.g. a ridiculously macho<lb />main character, mass amounts of death, monsters<lb />and a morally infallible main character. Of course<lb />there are separate variables that can automati-<lb />cally make an action movie tempting to anyone.<lb />Vikings will always fall into this section, which<lb /> oBeowulf ? has plenty of. And yet when I saw this<lb />movie I came to realize that Hollywood decided<lb />to not only create a terrible script, again, but to<lb />make this redunkulous action opportunity into a<lb />poor Shakespearean Video Game.<lb /><lb />When it comes to CGI everyone can agree that<lb />it is just better if you never notice it. If we were<lb />to look at o300, ? although some things are obvi-<lb />ously CG, the mere fact that there were real people<lb />excluded the CG elephants and rhinos. Go on and<lb />re-read my equation for a great action flick there<lb />you can see o300 ? fits perfectly. Now noticing this<lb />and seeing oBeowulf, ? you only wish that Frank<lb />Miller could have done it instead.<lb /><lb />Who came up with this all-CG idea? There<lb />were countless times in the theater when every-<lb />one would burst out laughing. And these were<lb />the odramatic ? scenes. But how can one really feel<lb />connected with a completely animated character,<lb />especially when it attempts ( oattempts ? is definitely<lb />the right word) to make you think they-are real?<lb />This will never work and hasn Tt worked ever since<lb />they tried it with that awful Final Fantasy movie.<lb />In fact, for a movie that was made around six to<lb />seven years ago J am surprised that it is basically<lb />on par with oBeowulf. ? Of course this isn Tt the<lb />only thing these two films have in common (suck-<lb />ing being one), but also the terrible, what | must<lb />call, acting.<lb /><lb />So now oBeowulf ? is dead and a chance<lb />at making a great poem into a great movie is<lb />completely lost. What makes this so much more<lb />pathetic is that oBeowulf ? was already written for<lb />Hollywood. And written in such a way that you<lb />would never have to worry about inner dialogue or<lb />anything. Beowulf good, Beowulf big man can kill<lb />anything, people die but Beowulf there to totally<lb />rock out to viking metal. Why was this so difficult?<lb /> o300 ? can get away with it but oBeowulf ? can Tt?<lb />Wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. In fact so wrong<lb />that I bet a 12-year-old boy could have directed<lb />something more entertaining than the crap Robert<lb />Zemeckis just pulled.<lb /><lb />Overall I think Hollywood just needs to return °<lb /><lb />to the basics and quite trying to complicate VERY<lb />simple stories. There is nothing wrong with a hero<lb />killing everyone and beating everything it comes<lb />up Just because. Don Tt try to mix fantasy CGI with<lb />simplified-complicated characters because now the<lb />poem oBeowolf ? shall always be remembered as<lb />that ocrappy CG movie. ?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Kimberiy Oollamy<lb />News Editor<lb /><lb />Rachel King<lb />Opinion Editor<lb /><lb />Ronnie Woodward<lb />Asst. <lb /> oTUESDAY NOVEMBER 27, 2007<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ FEATURES<lb /><lb />New Expressions magazine<lb />released this month<lb /><lb /> oMinority ? served as<lb />the theme<lb />ERIN EDWARDS<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />On Nov. 26, Expressions<lb />magazine released its new<lb />issue, titled oMinority. ? Com-<lb />plete with an impressive mar-<lb />keting campaign a and submitted<lb />literary pieces by students, the<lb />magazine strives to address the<lb />concerns, ideas and opinions<lb />that represent the minorities<lb />present on the campus of ECU.<lb />Expressions magazine was<lb />started in the 1980s at ECU<lb />in order to introduce opinions<lb />and address different con-<lb />cerns of minorities on campus.<lb />. Expressions defines minority<lb />as oany group of students<lb />that feels outside the norm or<lb />mainstream, ? according to the<lb />magazine Ts Web site.<lb /><lb />The overall responsibility<lb />of Expressions is to present<lb />the feelings of groups that<lb />feel neglected and to oinform,<lb />entertain and affect social<lb />change and understanding. ?<lb />Expressions General Man-<lb /><lb />ager Guillaume Bagal feels<lb />the upcoming issue will<lb />inform students of what<lb />the term ominority ? means<lb />and throw away any stereo-<lb />typical beliefs that students<lb />might have previously held.<lb /><lb /> oWe felt that the term<lb /> minority T was very intimidat-<lb />ing to most students. Many<lb />see minority as either black<lb />or Hispanic, and we wanted<lb />to show people that it went<lb />far beyond skin color and<lb />religious beliefs, ? said Bagal.<lb /> oTWe want] to be sure to<lb />cover issues not only of con-<lb />cern to students belong-<lb />ing to a minority, but also<lb />those that are of importance<lb />to any student unfulfilled<lb />by other campus forums. ?<lb />In an effort to prepare for<lb />the release, Bagal said that<lb />he and his art director, Ricky<lb />Chan, set up a photo shoot on<lb />campus with approximately<lb />100 students wearing the new<lb />Expressions T-shirt. These<lb />pictures were used to create<lb />posters around campus and on<lb />the actual covers of the maga-<lb />zine. Students were also given<lb />the opportunity to explain<lb /><lb />what minority means in their<lb />own words, which would also<lb />be included in the issue. Bagal<lb />said that the campaign for the<lb /><lb />promotion of the magazine was<lb /><lb />the most groundbreaking in<lb />the history of the publication.<lb /><lb />Chan believes the posters<lb /><lb />that were created using the<lb />snapshots of students will help<lb />students to realize that being a<lb />minority does not just apply to<lb />specific people, but to everyone.<lb /> oThe objective of the new post-<lb />ers of numerous people for the<lb />upcoming issue is to address a<lb />point that everyone is a minor-<lb />ity sometime, somewhere, and<lb />in'some aspect of their lives. By<lb />photographing a diverse ethnic<lb />and religious group of students<lb />on campus [we can] help one to<lb />look beyond the stereotype of<lb /> minority, ? said Chan.<lb /><lb />In a collaborative effort<lb />with the Student Union Popu-<lb />lar Entertainment Committee,<lb />Expressions will release the<lb />new issue at the Poetry Jam in<lb />Mendenhall Student Center on<lb />Nov. 26 at 7 p.m.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb /> " ee eee Y<lb /><lb />PAGE A6<lb /><lb />GAME from page Ad<lb /><lb />games for the Wii, Xbox 360 provides an impres-<lb />sive amount of entertaining and fun games to<lb />choose from. The price<lb />of the Xbox 360 varies depending on the size of.<lb />hard drive included in the system along with other<lb />features, but usually ranges from $300 to $450.<lb />Like the Playstation 3, the Xbox 360 experience<lb />is based on games that offer textured atmospheres<lb /><lb />. that engage the players in a variety of differently<lb /><lb />styled games. Offering an emphasis on games<lb />that target a more mature audience such as Halo,<lb /><lb />Saints Row and Gears of War have contributed to<lb />the popularity of Xbox 360 games.<lb /><lb />However, the Xbox 360 has become notori-<lb />ous amongst gamers for having low reliability<lb />and an occurrence of what is known as a general<lb />hardware failure.<lb /><lb />Allin all, this Christmas is sure to have shop-<lb />pers scoping out the obest ? and omost advanced ?<lb />game system to place under their trees.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />PEACE from page A5<lb /><lb />ber.
