I<lb />went without a pass for a couple months, and. when<lb />I wanted to go to the library at night, I couldn't<lb />because the Parking Nazis were on patrol for those<lb />who let their-meter run out for one minute. Park-<lb />ing is even taken up on the nearby side streets and<lb />frankly, it is not safe to walk by yourself in the city<lb />of Greenville. ; :<lb /><lb />I decided to get a pass because it would make<lb />it more convenient, but I was mistaken when I<lb />experienced my first attempt to find a spot in the<lb />parking lot. When I decided to go to the library<lb />or Rec. center around 5, or 6, or any other hour<lb />after that, the parking lot was filled at all times.<lb />I spent aboutd5 minutes dodging cars pulling out<lb />left and right or fighting with another vehicle over<lb />who turned their blinker on first for that spot.<lb /><lb />Bottom line, there simply isn Tt enough parking<lb /><lb />available for the amount of students here at ECU..<lb /><lb />First of all, parking should be a privilege and<lb />should not have to be paid for after 3 p.m. The fact<lb />that we have to pay for a parking pass and park in<lb />limited spots is absurd. I came from a university<lb />where parking was FREE anywhere (no matter<lb />what letter the spot was) after 4 p.m. Therefore<lb />it made it convenient for students who already<lb />pay enough to go to the university to actually get<lb />access to the facilities provided. With the amount<lb />of students who live off campus, you would think<lb />parking would be a lot easier than it is. The fact<lb />that more than 25,000 students go here and there<lb />is such limited parking is beyond my mind.<lb /><lb />I think a solution to this problem would be a<lb />multiple-level parking garage in order to save<lb />everyone the hassle and dread of finding a park-<lb />ing spot. Even though the parking garage may<lb />turn out to be an eye-sore on campus, it would<lb />save a lot of frustration and hassle for students and<lb />faculty. Lots of universities have parking garages<lb />because it is necessary to have for accommodation<lb />ofa large population. :<lb /><lb />The fact that I paid $65 for a parking pass and<lb />could possibly not find a spot is quite frustrating<lb />to me. Maybe the Parking Services should limit<lb />the amount of parking passes given out instead of<lb />worrying about the amount of money they can rake<lb />in on any given day.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />O07 Irebune Media SOryree<lb /><lb /> oThe wife says | take advantage of people. | said,<lb /> Gimme a break, I Tm a PIRATE!<lb />It Ts a cut-throat business! ?<lb /><lb />VON<lb /><lb />CGI)<lb /><lb />we<lb />iY<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />TUESDAY NOVEMBER 20, 2007<lb /><lb />pace A3<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />Do they have special parking at the Wal-<lb />Mart for your high horse?<lb /><lb />{ To turkey and friends. }<lb /><lb />\<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />a o<lb /><lb />2<lb />oom 7a: oe<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. LEWIS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Here in the United States, we have several<lb />holidays that don Tt get the attention they deserve,<lb />and a-few that get way too much attention. Now<lb />one of the holidays that is fast becoming forgotten<lb />is upon us. ea<lb /><lb />For weeks we couldn't enter a grocery store<lb />or a discount store without running head-on into<lb />a huge display of Halloween candy. Paper witches<lb />and Frankensteins were plastered on windows<lb />and hung from ceilings while pumpkins huddled<lb />together on the floor beneath the produce racks or<lb />out in front of the store.<lb /><lb />No sooner did we get the Halloween candy<lb />out of our faces than we were bombarded with<lb />Christmas goodies "candy canes, marshmallow<lb />Santas left over from Christmases past (I worked<lb />in a grocery store, so I know), and those awful<lb />red and green cookies you could patch a hole in<lb />a roof with.<lb /><lb />It seems to me that something Ts missing.<lb /><lb />Aside from meat freezers stocked with turkeys<lb />and large displays of Stove Top stuffing, the only<lb />promotion I saw for Thanksgiving was a small<lb />cardboard stand filled with cartoon turkey cocktail<lb />napkins and cups, and that was hidden behind a<lb />Christmas tree.<lb /><lb />Why does Thanksgiving get so little attention<lb />while all the emphasis is placed on Halloween and<lb />Christmas? It Ts simple. Money. Halloween and Christ-<lb />mas are goldmines, and Thanksgiving gets the shaft.<lb /><lb />Let's face it, only those in the grocery busi-<lb />ness make any money off of Thanksgiving, so all<lb />the other businesses have to milk Halloween and<lb />Christmas for all they're worth. Even most grocery<lb />stores have lost sight of the true meaning of the<lb />holiday in their quest for the almighty buck.<lb /><lb />Just 10 years ago, most grocery stores were<lb />closed on Thanksgiving so their employees could<lb />spend the day with their families, but now one<lb />would be hard-pressed to find a supermarket that Ts<lb />not open for at least part of the day. If you don Tt have<lb />what you need by Thanksgiving Day, then tough<lb />turkey (pun intended). I Tve always said that.<lb /><lb />"It Ts easy to get caught up in the glitz of Hal-<lb />loween and Christmas, the true meaning of which<lb />is also fading fast in the world Ts minds. They're<lb />fun holidays, however commercial they may be,<lb />but Thanksgiving is what this country Ts all about.<lb />It Ts as important a national holiday as the Fourth<lb />of July. If not for Thanksgiving, there might not<lb />have been an Independence Day.<lb /><lb />We certainly might not have the freedom to cel-<lb />ebrate Christmas or Hanukkah, or whatever else it<lb />is you may celebrate. The Pilgrims came over here<lb />400 years ago so we could have the freedom to do<lb />these things, and on the first Thanksgiving they<lb />thanked God for all the blessings He had bestowed<lb />upon them in the New World.<lb /><lb />Despite the prospect of a Hillary Clinton<lb />presidency, we still live in the greatest country on<lb />the face of the planet. There should be 365 days<lb />of Thanksgiving (366 in a leap year), so is it too<lb />much to ask to take just one day out to sit down<lb />and count our blessings?<lb /><lb />When a day that Ts as important as Thanksgiv-<lb />ing gets lost in a sea of corporate greed, maybe it Ts<lb />time for us to take a serious look at our lives and<lb />values. Chew on that and a mouthful of turkey the<lb />next time you get a hankering for candy corn or<lb />candy canes.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Rachel King<lb />Opinion Editor<lb /><lb />Kimberly Bellamy<lb />News Editor<lb /><lb />Ronnie Woodward<lb />Asst. The Spill Canvas<lb />began as just that, although<lb />today, three years later, they<lb />have transformed into some-<lb />thing bigger than ever expected.<lb /><lb />Their newest album, No<lb />Really, I Tm Fine, holds the key<lb />that could potentially launch<lb />The Spill Canvas right through<lb />the earth Ts atmosphere and into<lb />the next galaxy.<lb /><lb />After solely releasing their<lb />first album in 2004, founding<lb />member Nick Thomas added a<lb />full band to thicken his already<lb />established sound with hopes of<lb />entering the mainstream world<lb />of rock and roll. Avoid the letdown<lb />Two weeks ago the Pirates went to Marshall<lb />and suffered one of the ie disappoint-<lb />ments of the Skip Holtz era. Everything was<lb />on the line for ECU, which had to win out to<lb />host the C- USA championship game. With a<lb />26-7 defeat at the hands of Marshall fresh<lb />on their minds, the e Pirates return to action<lb />Mis week k against Tulane hoping, to avoid<lb />Aloti is still at stake for ECU,<lb />mainly that if UTEP beats UCF and ECU<lb />wins then the Pirates wil be inthe cham-<lb /><lb />pionship game.<lb /><lb />2. Contain Matt Forte<lb /><lb />Tulane running back Matt Forte boasts a<lb />heavy resume and his own website, which<lb />makes it a well-known fact that his is one<lb />of the best in the business, Forte leads the<lb />nation in rushing yards (2,007) and yards<lb />per game (182.45.) He is also just the 11th<lb />player ever in NCAA Division 1-Bowl Subdi-<lb />vision to rush for over 2,000 yards in a sea-<lb />son. ECU will need to limit Forte Ts yardage to<lb />pull out a win, The Green Wave will be look-<lb />ing for Forte to milk the clock and rumble<lb />through the banged up Pirate defense all<lb /><lb />game long.<lb /><lb />3. Stop the pass<lb /><lb />With so much of the Pirates defensive ef-<lb />Torts surely applied to stopping Matt Forte,<lb />ECU will have tobe aware of the play-action<lb />pass. While Tulane only averages around 215<lb />yards per game through the air, the ECU de-<lb />fense gives up almost 305 yards a Same It<lb />will be interesting to see if the Pirate defense<lb />can rise to the occasion of stopping the pass<lb /><lb />when Tulane does decide to throw the Well<lb /><lb />ECU needs help from veterans and UTEP to make<lb />conference championship<lb /><lb />JARED JACKSON<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />And then there was one.<lb /><lb />Fresh off a bye week after 11 straight games, the Pirates [6-5, 5-2] prepare to play<lb />host to Tulane [4-7, 3-4] this Saturday at Dowdy-Ficklen.<lb /><lb />Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.<lb /><lb /> oThis will be a great challenge for us and we are looking forward to it, ? said ECU<lb />head coach Skip Holtz. oWe still have a lot to play for this season and although we won't<lb />know the outcome of the [UCF] game when we kick off, we have to take the approach<lb />that we are playing for the conference championship. We haven Tt won six conference<lb />games here since the 1970s and that would show great growth for our program.<lb /><lb /> oI think this team is very motivated and I hope the feeling that they had after the<lb />Marshall game lingers. It was certainly one of the worst losses we have had since I<lb />have been here because there was so much on the line for us. ?<lb /><lb />The Green Wave will be riding a two game winning streak when they make their<lb />way to Greenville on Saturday.<lb /><lb />Holtz seemed concerned about going against one of the nation Ts most elite running<lb />backs in.Matt Forte during his weekly press conference Monday.<lb /><lb />Forte has quite the impressive resume and even has his own website. The senior<lb />Louisiana native has become just the eleventh player in NCAA Division-1 Bowl Sub-<lb />division history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a season, accomplishing the feat last<lb />week against Rice.<lb /><lb />Proving to be not just a treat running the ball, Forte has also caught 29 passes<lb />for 257 yards on the season.<lb /><lb /> oMatt Forte is obviously a great running back, ? said Holtz. oHe is the focal point<lb />of their offense and is the leading rusher in our league as well as the nation. He is<lb />powerful, balanced and speedy.<lb /><lb /> oHe is a lot like [Kevin] Smith from UCF. However, I think he is bigger and more<lb />physical than Smith. Both are durable, carrying the ball 336 and 330 times. They are<lb />both so good at what they do. [Forte] has balance, athleticism, power and speed. He<lb />is also [Tulane Ts] second-leading receiver out of the backfield. ? '<lb /><lb />Adding to the concern of stopping Smith is the fact that ECU still has injury<lb />problems even after coming off the bye week.<lb /><lb /> oThere have been a bunch of bumps, bruises, strains and sprains that have had<lb />the opportunity to heal, ? said Holtz. oHowever, Marcus Hands, Fred Hicks, Danny<lb />Muhwezi and Willie Barton are all out and will not play. Some of the guys on the<lb />bubble that we are hoping to make it back for the last game, Brandon Setzer, T.J. Lee,<lb />Khalif Mitchell, Nick Johnson, Quentin Cotton, Jeremy Chambliss do not look like<lb />they will be able to go Saturday.<lb /><lb /> oChris Mattocks is also a question mark. I Tm concerned about it because those are<lb />about eight players off the defensive two-deep that have made significant contributions<lb /><lb />see PREVIEW page A7<lb /><lb />SID. -<lb /><lb />HOLTZ TOLEDO<lb /><lb /> oWe have a chance to finish third in the<lb />Wester Division and we were picked<lb />early in the season to not win a football<lb />game. We've had a chance to win<lb />several others and we've been close.<lb />We've been very competitive and<lb />that Ts what | want from these guys. ?<lb /><lb /> oAt this point, we are playing for where we are<lb />going bowling. We know at this point that we<lb />are going to go, but just don Tt know where yet.<lb />The outcome of this Saturday's game with<lb />Tulane has a lot to do with that. ?<lb /><lb />1. Control the game<lb /><lb />It's no secret what Tulane Ts strength is:<lb />running the ball, ..and stopping. the run.<lb />Tulane Ts 6-foot-2, 223-pound senior .un-<lb />ning back, Matt Forte, is leading the na-<lb />ton, in, rushing. yards CAN) and yards<lb />per game (182.45). and is on pace to<lb />have the third-best oaie season in<lb />NCAA history. The Green Wave are also<lb /><lb />sen C-USA in rush defense, allowing<lb /><lb />124.7 yards per game. Tulane can control<lb /><lb />the pace of this game by running the ball<lb /><lb />effectively, which would keep the clock<lb /><lb />running and shorten the game, and stop-<lb /><lb />ping ECU. when it runs the ball, which<lb /><lb />could cause third-and-long situations.<lb /><lb />2. Stay in the game early<lb /><lb />The Pirates have had numerous slow starts<lb />this year, most notably in the last two loss-<lb />es (Marshall and N.C. State.) Tulane, aside<lb />trom Forte chasing history, has nothing to<lb />play for because it is mathematically elimi-<lb />nated from postseason Ae ECU. should<lb />have a bad taste in its mouth after the<lb />Marshall loss, it Ts senior day and the Pirates<lb />are coming off a bye week. The Green Wave<lb />need to avoid a slow start, which could<lb />cause them to roll over and start looking<lb />forward to the off-season, while ECU still<lb /><lb />has a lot to play for.<lb /><lb />3. Send Forte out in style<lb /><lb />Matt Forte has had one the best seasons<lb />by a running back in college football his-<lb />tory this year. He has rushed for 100-plus<lb />yards in seven straight games and doesn't<lb />want that streak to end. The Green Wave<lb />need him to finish his impressive career<lb />with another outstanding performance,<lb /><lb />which could help them pull off the upset.<lb /><lb /></p>

We are about to go play an explosive offensive team. ?<lb /><lb />While the Pirates will undoubtedly be focused on stopping the run Saturday, Holtz knows<lb />that keying in on the run leads to getting burned by play-action passing.<lb /><lb /> oTheir passing game is based off the run then play-action, ? said Holtz. o[Anthony] Scelfo,<lb />their quarterback, is very accurate off of the play-action as.they get their safetiés downfield into<lb />the running game. They are very good at what they do and very patient with what they do. ?<lb /><lb />Redshirt sophomore Scelfo has played fairly well this season in throwing for an average<lb />of 115 yards per game and six touchdowns on the season. The main receiving threat for the<lb />Green Wave is Jeremy Williams, who has racked up five touchdowns and 701 receiving yards.<lb />The aforementioned Forte is an additional threat.<lb /><lb />While the Green Wave boast a potent offense, their defense has been just as good<lb />recently.<lb /><lb /> oFrom a defensive standpoint, they are very good up the middle and against the run, ? said<lb />Holtz about the Green Wave, who-rank second in rushing defense in C-USA. oThey held LSU<lb />to 39 yards rushing through three quarters earlier in the season. Their two inside players are<lb />very good and their middle linebacker is their leading tackler.<lb /><lb /> oAdditionally their next five top tacklers are all safeties. They incorporate a five-defensive<lb />back system which creates a lot of confusion and those safeties are like bonus linebackers. We<lb />haven Tt seen that from many teams this season. Bannister Ts<lb />layup was off the mark but for-<lb />ward Alex McLean came down<lb />with an offensive rebound on<lb />the other side of the basket with<lb />1 second left. McLean then fin-<lb />ished a put-back off the glass, in<lb />traffic, to give the Flames (2-3)<lb />4 55-53 buzzer-beating win over<lb />ECU (1-2).<lb /><lb />Liberty Ts last second heroics<lb />came on.a broken play, setting<lb />up a frantic finish. Liberty point<lb />guard B.J. Jenkins began toruna<lb />play but lost control of the ball at<lb />the top of the key. ECU Ts Darrell<lb />Jenkins couldn Tt quite reach the<lb />ball as it bounced into the hands<lb />of Bannister on the wing.<lb /><lb /> oThat's two losses in a row;<lb />close losses in a row at home, ?<lb />said sophomore John Fields. oWe<lb />really disappointed the fans. We<lb />just need to play up to our poten-<lb />#14] in crunch-time. ?<lb /><lb />,* The Pirates trailed Liberty<lb />for the duration of the game before<lb />freshman Brock Young finally put<lb />ECU in position to level with 18<lb />séconds remaining. A Young free<lb />throw tied the game at 53, the<lb />first tie since the score was 2-2.<lb /><lb />Young missed his second, taking<lb /><lb />the pressure off the Flames for<lb />tHeir final possession.<lb /><lb />¢ Jenkins brought the Pirates<lb />wathin one point of the Flames<lb /><lb />with a three from the corner with.<lb /><lb />59 on the clock. Young rebounded<lb />a {nissed jumper from Liberty and<lb />pushed the ball down the court,<lb />Where he was fouled in the lane.<lb /><lb />. ECU trailed 50-40 with just<lb /><lb />over five minutes left in the game,<lb />when the Pirates began a hard-<lb />fought comeback. Sam Hinnant<lb />missed a three-pointer but fol-<lb />lowed his shot and finished a bank<lb />shot from close range. Jenkins<lb />then hit two free throws to cut the<lb />lead to 50-44.<lb /><lb />The Pirates drew closer<lb />when Gabe Blair was fouled<lb />while landing a one-handed<lb />dunk on the baseline at the 2:05<lb />mark. Blair Ts free throw made it<lb />52-47. Jenkins, who paced the<lb />Flames with 22 points, went<lb />down with an injury on the<lb />ensuing play. While Jenkins<lb />was down on the floor, ECU Ts<lb />Darrell Jenkins raced down the<lb />court and missed a layup, but<lb />got a follow-up shot to go to<lb />narrow the lead to 52-49.<lb /><lb />ECU Head Coach Mack<lb />McCarthy continued to look for a<lb />reliable rotation, playing 11 total<lb />players in the loss.<lb /><lb /> oRight now what we're lack-<lb />ing is any consistency from any-<lb />body, ? said McCarthy. oAnd that<lb />makes it hard to get into some<lb />kind of rotation and flow that<lb />makes sense. ?<lb /><lb />Gabe Blair had another big<lb />game in the post for ECU, shoot-<lb />ing 7-of-11 for 15 points. Jenkins<lb />finished with 12 points, while<lb />Young and Cory Farmer each<lb />added seven.<lb /><lb />Liberty forced ECU to play a<lb />half-court game early, eliminat-<lb />ing the up-and-down style the<lb />Pirates prefer.<lb /><lb /> oThey did a real good job of<lb />making us play their tempo of the<lb />game, ? said Fields. oWe couldn't<lb />really get up and down and get<lb />fast break baskets like we wanted<lb />to and establish the press. ?<lb /><lb />McCarthy believes the<lb />offense will come with proper<lb />defensive adjustments.<lb /><lb /> oWe've got to get more<lb />stops, ? McCarthy said. oWe<lb />forced some turnovers and<lb />then we just didn Tt beat people<lb />down the floor.
