There was a range of 20-30 students<lb />from each school.<lb /><lb /> oMany of our GEAR UP students come from<lb />families who have never had anyone attend col-<lb />lege, ? Andrews said.<lb /><lb /> oSo, attending events like ECU Ts GEAR UP<lb />Day can be a real eye-opening experience for<lb /><lb />our students as they see the possibilities and<lb /><lb />opportunities that are available to them after<lb />high school. ? d<lb /><lb />The student Ts day began with registration<lb />at 9:30 a.m. at Mendenhall Student Center. The<lb />welcome and greetings began at 10 a.m.<lb /><lb />The featured speaker for the students, Lamar<lb />Waller, is Johnston County Ts 2007 Wal-Mart<lb />Teacher of the Year and an ECU graduate.<lb /><lb />The students were fed lunch at West End<lb />Dining Hall. After lunch there were two rotat-<lb />ing workshops. :<lb /><lb />One of these was for financial aid, admissions<lb /><lb />explore college life<lb /><lb />and scholarships. The second workshop focused<lb />on careers, how to choose a career and different<lb />types of degree areas that work for certain careers.<lb /><lb /> oThe GEAR UP program gives students the<lb />opportunity to refocus their academics so they are<lb />taking the right courses in high school to prepare<lb />them for college, ? said Tarrick Cox, coordinator<lb />of Student Outreach.<lb /><lb /> oGEAR UP Day is a wonderful way for ECU<lb />to get their name out there to these students at<lb />such an early age. ?<lb /><lb />After students went through the workshops,<lb />there was a resource fair, with different programs<lb />and departments available. This lasted until 2 p.m.<lb /><lb /> oThis is, obviously, a great way for them to<lb />see themselves on a college campus and realize<lb />that college is an option for them, ? Andrews said.<lb />The program is accessible for 20 districts in<lb />North Carolina and each district has a coordina-<lb />tor. The coordinator of each district lets students<lb />know about the program and get those who are<lb />interested to sign up.<lb /><lb />Coordinators may sometimes target specific<lb />students to sign up, if it is a certain career of<lb />interest that will be highlighted on campus.<lb /><lb />In addition, the coordinators may require the .<lb />students to write an essay explaining why they<lb />want to attend the event.<lb /><lb />All schools have different methods of how the<lb />students are selected.<lb /><lb />GEAR UP Day receives a six-year cycle grant<lb />statewide. North Carolina is in its third year of<lb />its second grant.<lb /><lb />Other North Carolina colleges will also host<lb />the program on their campus, as well as summer<lb />enrichment programs.<lb /><lb />ECU hosted a summer enrichment program<lb />this past summer for ninth and tenth graders.<lb /><lb />Enrichment programs prepare students aca-<lb />demically with leadership skills and give them<lb />the opportunity to stay on campus for three or<lb />more days.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />- news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />a Neweat and Moat behets | College To<lb /><lb />kful for our Cornucopia of Features including<lb />Pri Sedrooms &amp; Bathrooms * Large Capacity Washer &amp; Dryer<lb />j system * Lare cks * Available Pur:<lb /><lb />anhome Community<lb /><lb />Copper Beech Leasing Office<lb /><lb />67-1015<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />www.¢béech.com<lb /><lb /></p>

LEWIS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />I Tm getting too old for this...stuff. Sunday<lb />night, I did what I swore I Td never do again, and<lb />that Ts pull an all-nighter. I had to write a 500 to<lb />750-word book review. No big deal. I knocked<lb />that out in about 45 minutes. The kicker was not<lb />starting to read the 250-page book till 5 p.m. on<lb />the evening before it was due.<lb /><lb />Why did I wait till the last minute? I'll admit<lb />I Tm a procrastinator, but there Ts:also that pesky<lb />thing called life that keeps getting in the way. I<lb />like to spend time with my wife. I like to play with<lb />my dog, visit my parents, and watch oCurb Your<lb />Enthusiasm ? with my best friend. I act in plays and<lb />write columns for two different newspapers. And<lb />then there are the everyday things that have to be<lb />done while the wife is working to put me through<lb />college such as cooking, cleaning, and going to<lb />the market. Add to that commuting 50 miles and<lb />spending half the day in class three days a week,<lb />and then having to read volumes for each class. It<lb />can wear a body down quickly.<lb /><lb />I Tm thirteen years older than the majority of my<lb />classmates. That might not sound like much, but<lb />wait till you get there. It Ts an effort for me to stay<lb />up past midnight anymore, no matter what time I<lb />got up. After a while, something has to go on the<lb />back burner, and for me it was my book review. I Tm<lb />certainly not advocating neglecting one Ts studies,<lb />but it was the choice I made.<lb /><lb />When I attended ECU eleven years ago, I could<lb />start writing a major paper the night before it was<lb />due, knock offaround 4 a.m., get four hours of sleep,<lb />and go to school the next day, and it wouldn't even<lb />faze me. My eyelids wouldn't droop once, and I Td<lb />at least get a B on the paper. :<lb /><lb />Monday, I felt like I was in Neverland (Pete<lb />Pan Ts version, not Michael Jackson Ts), and all my<lb />professors probably thought I was coming off a<lb />three-day drunk. I Tll probably be lucky to get a Q<lb />on the book review, much less an F.<lb /><lb />I think young college students get a bad rap.<lb />People older than I think they're lazy, and that they<lb />spend too much time partying and not enough time<lb />studying. Hey, if you can have any kind of life and<lb />then stay up all night reading a book and/or writ-<lb />ing a paper, and still be able to function the next<lb />day and make a passing grade, then my hat Ts off to<lb />you because I just can Tt do it anymore.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Counsel me, please<lb />ECU Ts Counseling Center<lb /><lb />JESSICA DUNLOW<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />It is common in the United States to hear about<lb /> the luxuries that upper class people get, like cars,<lb />plastic surgery, house cleaners, and so on. Well,<lb />I think that two of these perks are psychiatrists<lb />and psychologists, which is odd, because most of<lb />us grow up thinking that only ocrazy ? people go<lb />to these professionals.<lb /><lb />As ECU students, part of our tuition goes to the<lb />counseling center and I think it is definitely in the<lb />best interest of the campus community. Without<lb />the counseling center, I doubt we would, as a whole,<lb />function sanely. :<lb /><lb />However, there are still those who are skepti-<lb />cal of the entire counseling process. Why is this?<lb />Are you afraid of sharing things with a complete<lb />stranger? On the other hand, are you just afraid of<lb />how it would make you look to your friends? There<lb />is nothing wrong with needing to talk to someone<lb />(especially when that someone is non-biased).<lb /><lb />The average college student has to handle the<lb />pressure of pleasing their professors, pleasing their<lb />parents, and most of all, themselves. They have<lb />to pay for rent, bills, food and parties, Tall on top<lb />of trying to maintain some sort of social life; this<lb />includes the ever-heavy subject of love. This in<lb />itselfis enough to drive anyone up the wall. There<lb />are people who go for more medical reasons.<lb /><lb />However, what makes you, those who choose<lb />to abstain from counseling, any different from<lb />those who choose to? Counselors are not always<lb />there for just those who have diagnosed disorders:<lb /><lb />According to the National Center for Educational ©<lb /><lb />Statistics, 40 percent of undergraduate students<lb />attend regular counseling sessions.<lb /><lb />The counseling center here on ECU Ts campus<lb />offers sessions discussing study tips, coping with<lb />grief, charting your career path, and so on. It does<lb />not have to be just you and a counselor sitting on<lb />the proverbial couch discussing how your mother<lb />criticized you and your dad never hugged you.<lb />They even offer group sessions that are open for<lb />staff and students.<lb /><lb />I guess I am trying to tell you that it is okay to go<lb />and talk to someone. If your friends are too narrow-<lb />minded sometimes and you need a ready ear...the<lb />staff at the counseling center is ready to hear about<lb />your break-up, your trust issues, and your fear of<lb />falling down the dorm steps. ANY THING.<lb /><lb />Do not think someone is going to judge you<lb />for going to the counseling center, or that your<lb />parents will be ashamed. It is just talking. It is<lb />their job! If anything, it can only help the way you<lb />are feeling and help you cope with the day-to-day<lb />stresses that pummel us.<lb /><lb />So do it. Step outside of yourself and give<lb />counseling a try. Besides, instead of asking why we<lb />should or should not attend counseling, we need<lb />to ask ourselves, why is our college life stressing<lb />us out so much more now than it did our parents<lb />that we need the help more?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />{ Oneopinion atatime. }<lb /><lb />te 2S 4<lb />Se<lb />IS HILLARY<lb /><lb />DISCOURAGED THAT AS SOON AS SHE GETS<lb /><lb />( . | BACK FROM BUYING<lb />ae ee CURTAINS FOR THE<lb /><lb />A NARROW OVE CRC<lb /><lb />MARGIN ?<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. As we neared<lb />my house, I asked him about his first impressions<lb />of my hometown.<lb /><lb /> oIt just looks like a long series of strip-malls, ?<lb />he told me. ;<lb /><lb />Though I was mildly offended, I had to agree<lb />with him.<lb /><lb />Greenville has experienced unchecked growth<lb />in the past decade, which has certainly made it a<lb />more exciting place to live; but, on the other hand, it<lb />has slowly converted Greenville into a monotonous<lb />sea of pavement and chain stores.<lb /><lb />This kind of unsustainable development is both<lb />environmentally and socially harmful, and could have<lb />enormous repercussions on our way of life. Sprawl<lb />leads to wasted land space, which is becoming an ever<lb />scarcer resource, more paved surfaces, which cause<lb /><lb />greater run-off and water pollution, as well as alonger ©<lb /><lb />commute, which of course means wasted gas.<lb /><lb />The social isolation that is created by such<lb />sprawling distance between our homes, our offices,<lb />our schools and our stores could potentially wreak<lb />havoc on our families and community as well. The<lb />longer commute translates to less time spent with<lb />family and friends, and the geographical compart-<lb />mentalization of our lives into separate entities<lb />means decreased opportunity for interaction.<lb /><lb />That most of us are incapable of walking any-<lb />where useful means that we spend more of each<lb />day in our cars and lose the familiarity that comes<lb />with walking to a neighborhood grocery store and<lb />encountering friends along the way. Instead, we<lb />live in large houses located twenty minutes from<lb />anything, and hole up in our own rooms. We don Tt<lb />know our neighbors and barely know our children.<lb /><lb />As the sprawling suburbs and commercial areas<lb />are eating up scarce land each year, we watch our<lb />downtown slowly become more and more degraded.<lb />What was once a busy small town center is nearly<lb />abandoned; however, it is slowly recovering, due to<lb />the efforts of some brave entrepreneurs.<lb /><lb />Our community would benefit greatly from a<lb />return to that kind of multi-use, compact, healthy<lb />and accessible downtown area near the university.<lb />If contractors concentrated on renovating already<lb />existing downtown buildings instead of building<lb />brand new ones farther out of town, they could<lb />spare a lot of resources, as well as create a thriving<lb />campus-side environment.<lb /><lb />What would it be like to live near such a com-<lb />munity center? Imagine being able to get up in<lb />the morning and walk your child to school every<lb />day, which would afford you, say, fifteen minutes<lb />of undistracted quality time with him. Then you<lb />might be able to walk to work, past your favorite<lb />restaurants and clothing stores, as well as friends<lb />who also live in the area.<lb /><lb />As Greenville is not a big city, this kind of com-<lb />munity is certainly attainable, though not everyone<lb />can live within walking distance of the university.<lb />However, builders could focus on creating such multi-<lb />functional environments around the hospital, for<lb />example, or in dense residential areas. Though some<lb />new construction is necessary due to the growing<lb />population, there are smart, environmentally-friendly<lb />ways to build new subdivisions when it has to be done,<lb />such as by building upward instead of outward.<lb /><lb />This vision for more sustainable, united and<lb />personal models for city planning should motivate<lb />voters and local government officials to support<lb />this type of development. Homeowners, builders<lb />and businesspeople can also make simple market<lb />choices in support of this design, by either reno-<lb />vating or buying existing homes, offices or retail<lb />spaces that are more centrally located.<lb /><lb />Everyone is at least capable of choosing to<lb />patronize the shops downtown that are working<lb />towards rebuilding a cultural center. Remember<lb />that this type of business could help to reclaim a<lb />sense of community in your town. With a collec-<lb />tive effort, Greenville can continue to grow while<lb />conserving the positive small town vibe. :<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb /><lb />Rachel King<lb />Opinion Editor<lb /><lb />Kimberiy Collamy<lb />News Editor<lb /><lb />Ronnie Woodward<lb />Asst.
