After<lb />arriving on the scene just 10<lb />minutes later, they learned that<lb />the true cause for the call was<lb />actually a gas leak.<lb /><lb /> oThey [a construction<lb />crew] were drilling under<lb />the road and they struck a<lb />gas line, ? said Doug Branch,<lb />Greenville Fire &amp; Rescue<lb />battalion chief.<lb /><lb />Six units responded to the<lb /><lb />scene. Upon arrival, rescue<lb />workers evacuated several<lb />local commercial businesses<lb />in the immediate area and<lb />blocked traffic on 10 Street.<lb /><lb />Precautions were taken in<lb />order to ensure the safety of<lb />those in the vicinity.<lb /><lb />At a roadblock set up at<lb />the intersection of Brook<lb />Valley subdivisions, drivers<lb />commuting east on 10th<lb /><lb />Street were re-routed. Those<lb />heading West were cut off at<lb />Portertown Road.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts possible that a vehicle<lb />could be an ignition source.<lb />We also had to think about the<lb />damage that the fumes could<lb />cause, ? Branch said. .<lb /><lb />Hehvew: BCU an ansist<lb />system had to adjust their<lb />route to University Manor.<lb />due to the roadblocks.<lb /><lb /> oA call came in from our<lb />bus driver saying that 10th<lb />Street was blocked. We sent<lb />out a supervisor to assess the<lb />scene, and to figure out if we<lb />would still be able to service<lb />the area, ? said Wood Davidson,<lb />interim director of transit.<lb /><lb />Within 15 minutes of the<lb /><lb />*call from the driver, tran-<lb /><lb />see LEAK page A3<lb /><lb />Art professor<lb />earns award<lb /><lb />Posters brings<lb />attention to the School<lb />of Art and Design<lb /><lb />WHITNEY JENKINS<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />Gunnar Swanson, ECU<lb /><lb />graphic arts professor, has T<lb /><lb />received an award of excellence<lb />from the University &amp; College<lb />Designers Association for his<lb />ECU School of Art and Design<lb />student recruitment poster.<lb /><lb />The purpose of the poster,<lb />according to Swanson, is to<lb />implement graphic design visu-<lb />ally and present it in a way that<lb />initiates discussion.<lb /><lb /> oAwards always recognize<lb />an immediate aesthetic reac-<lb />tion, ? Swanson said.<lb /><lb /> oGraphic design isn Tt<lb />about being pretty and win-<lb />ning awards, but to get<lb />people discussing. Graphic<lb />design is visual rhetoric. ?<lb /><lb />The poster depicts a col-<lb />lection of random but highly<lb />stylized objects that include a<lb />sheep, an open hand, a key, fish-<lb />ing lures and a pair of snips.<lb /><lb />Concerning the discussion<lb />of his graphic. design poster,<lb />Swanson said, oThere are a lot<lb />of loaded symbols. How can<lb />these symbols interact? ?<lb /><lb />Form and image both have<lb />meaning and should be taken<lb />seriously by people, especially<lb />those persons in the art and<lb />graphic design area, according<lb />to Swanson.<lb /><lb /> oThe images on the poster<lb />are deliberately ambiguous but<lb />far from random, T Swanson said.<lb /><lb /> oFor instance, the sheep<lb />could be one in a series of lures<lb />or goals featured "the fabled<lb />Golden Fleece or the sheep-<lb /><lb />rowly-defined disciplines, but<lb />that Ts just me. ?<lb /><lb />Swanson hopes that by people<lb />discussing the meaning and<lb /><lb />interpretation of his poster that ©<lb /><lb />they will also be talking about<lb />the School of Art and Design.<lb />Otherwise, oI Tve failed, ?<lb />Swanson said, regarding his<lb />goal for stimulating discussion<lb />about the poster design.<lb /> oWhen people say What<lb />does that mean? T we know<lb />it Ts working, ? said Michael<lb />Drought, director of the<lb />School of Art and Design.<lb /><lb /> oSo much graphic design |<lb /><lb />is either so transparent or so<lb />obscure that conscious con-<lb />sideration of meaning seems<lb />irrelevant, ? Drought said.<lb /><lb /> oWe'd like to create open-<lb />ings for conversations about<lb />how people in a university<lb />talk and think about art and<lb />design. ?<lb /><lb />The student recruit-<lb />ment poster was printed by<lb />a team of ECU faculty and<lb />students, using silkscreen<lb />and letterpress techniques<lb />that are used in art processes.<lb /><lb /> oWe chose art T reproduc-<lb />tion techniques rather than<lb />normal commercial printing<lb />methods so the poster would<lb />act as an exemplar as much as<lb />advertising, ? Swanson said.<lb /><lb /> oBy creating a limited edi-<lb />tion object, we hope the poster<lb />will connect with issues of art<lb />and value. ?<lb /><lb />The student recruitment<lb />poster is sent to various art<lb />schools and allows people to<lb />consider ECU.<lb /><lb />It is also featured in Print<lb />magazine's 2007 design awards,<lb />currently on newsstands and<lb />will appear in a special awards<lb />issue of Graphic Design: USA<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Bp i art, device. art education. and ace history, MEA im att and design MAE im act education<lb /><lb />Carolina University<lb /><lb />Leg Jemiuns Fine dete Conte « Gemetetion NC TSE<lb /><lb />shawn +3 252 S28 665<lb /><lb />te, a NU Ss<lb /><lb />photography<lb /><lb />textile design<lb /><lb />art education<lb /><lb />Art &amp; Design<lb /><lb />ceramics<lb /><lb />graphic design<lb /><lb />metal design<lb />fainting &amp; drawing<lb /><lb />3<lb /><lb />nat th 6x ceanicnsdl<lb /><lb />sculpture<lb /><lb />pre Sh: eats:<lb /><lb />FORSHTAW BANS SHS.<lb /><lb />and in the book oBig Book<lb />of Design Ideas 3, ? by David §<lb />Carter, both to be released in 8<lb />early 2008.<lb /><lb />skin T of a diploma--a sign of<lb />development under a shepherd Ts<lb />protection, or just a celebratory<lb />barbecue. I knew there was something out of the ordi-<lb />nary. It didn Tt sit right with me. I let it slide. I<lb />read the replies of the enthusiastic Christians who<lb />responded. They thought they had owon ? over<lb />another.<lb /><lb />Then I read your last article, and I cringed. I<lb />had hoped it was not possible. My first response<lb />was to scream, oHow could you? ?<lb /><lb />As it is obvious from the article I wrote, which<lb />was published the same day as your last, I am<lb />not a Christian, and yet I would never go about<lb />manipulating people in the manner that you did.<lb />It offends me.<lb /><lb />You quoted the Sokal Affair as your basis<lb />for your little trick. Clever. But how about this:<lb />religion, albeit different for everyone, is a topic of<lb />which deliberate falsification is inappropriate.<lb /><lb />I find your article completely condescending<lb />and without merit. You speak of a diatribe as if you<lb />are someone in the position of condemning others T<lb />thoughts. Who do you think you are?<lb /><lb />You rebuke them for their reaction when it was<lb />you who insinuated it, as a game. Religion is not a<lb />game to be played as one would roll dice. Regard-<lb />less of your religion, which you chose to remain<lb />nameless, one has liberty to pursue the one that<lb />he or she wants.<lb /><lb />I can appreciate sarcasm with the best of them.<lb />I think it has a crucial place in the media. But in<lb />subjects not as personal as one Ts own religion.<lb /><lb />I understand you have your opinions. In reality,<lb />I share a lot of your opinions. But it is not necessary<lb />. for me to reproach the religious beliefs of another<lb />person. Especially not as a game in a university<lb />newspaper, read by more people that disagree with<lb />you than agree.<lb /><lb />Even if you disagree, let them decide for<lb />themselves.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />The art of<lb />yoga<lb /><lb />How yoga has transformed me<lb /><lb />LISA ENSMINGER<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Living the life of a college student can be quite<lb />stressful at times (or all the time), as many of you<lb />would agree, and you just need time to relax. Now<lb />I know vegging out on the couch in front of the TV<lb />with a bag of chips is just a necessity sometimes<lb />because our brains are constantly over-worked, but<lb />yoga is the perfect activity to try when in need of<lb />some deep relaxation. :<lb /><lb />The art of yoga focuses on every aspect of<lb />your body and healing it with finding your inner<lb />self. You fall into deep relaxation before and after<lb />the workout to really listen to your body and hear<lb />what needs to be focused on. Not only does yoga<lb />provide relaxation, your muscles become toned<lb />and stretched, leaving you with a fantastic figure<lb />and limber body.<lb /><lb />The majority of you probably think yoga is a<lb />non-challenging activity that probably would not<lb />give you a good workout or help you lose weight,<lb />but this is not true. I Tm sure if you pass a yoga ses-<lb />sion at the gym and see these odd-looking poses<lb />with the lights off, you think to yourselves, oWhat<lb />are they doing in there? That is not much of a<lb />workout at all. ? In fact, every time I leave a yoga<lb />_ session, I am sore, relaxed and feeling satisfied<lb /><lb />with my hour and half workout.<lb /><lb />Most of the poses are quite challenging, but<lb />there are all sorts of levels and variations of a<lb />particular pose to make it easier or harder for the<lb />participant. oDown-ward-facing dog ? is a signature<lb />pose that works both the upper and lower parts<lb />of the body, while stretching every muscle and<lb />gaining strength by holding up the entire weight<lb />of your body.<lb /><lb />The variety of poses really focuses on the<lb />positioning of your body, gaining of strength and<lb />flexibility, and enhancing your posture by length-<lb />ening your spine.<lb /><lb />It takes time to really get involved with the art<lb />of yoga. I was always afraid to try it out because it<lb />looked difficult to me. I needed to find something<lb />that distressed me and gave me an all-around good<lb />workout because, honestly, running just doesn Tt cut<lb />it for me. I decided to try it out. I Tm not going to lie,<lb />it was kind of weird at first trying to listen to your<lb />own body and really practice the breathing sensa-<lb />tions, but it takes some getting used to feel that<lb />yoga is normal. It also takes some time to really<lb />find that deep relaxation and learn the different<lb />poses to get the full effect and benefits of yoga.<lb /><lb />Now that I have been intensely involved with<lb />yoga, practicing it at least two times a week (if not<lb />more), I have seen drastic improvements with my<lb />flexibility and my body figure, Not only does yoga<lb />noticeably tone your muscles, it allows you to really<lb />find your inner self by focusing on the positive<lb />things in life. It takes the bitterness out of your<lb />heart by finding that spirit within you.<lb /><lb />The art of yoga is extremely beneficial to the<lb />body as a whole, and I really feel it is looked down<lb /><lb />- upon because people either are afraid or ashamed<lb />of participating in it because it is unusual. If you<lb />have had any desire to try yoga, I encourage you to<lb />give it a chance; you may find that it is a positive,<lb />transforming experience, as it was for me.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Wars<lb /><lb />This week Ts photo was printed on silver gelatin print and was taken with an Olympus<lb />35mm.camera on the photographer's back deck. The show, which was created by a couple of<lb />knuckleheads messing around with construction<lb />paper cutouts, has become the pioneer of hilari-<lb />ously controversial TV.<lb /><lb />Do you really think that shows like oFamily<lb />Guy ? and oRobot Chicken ? would be possible<lb />without oSouth Park? ?<lb /><lb />As long running as oSouth Park ? is, the one<lb />complaint directed at Trey Parker and Matt Stone<lb />over the past few seasons has been a heavy dose of<lb /> opreaching. ? For several seasons, this was a real<lb />problem, and the show became weighed down with<lb />the burden of its own smugness.<lb /><lb />Thats, until Parker and Stone got in on the joke,<lb />and realized they could poke fun at even themselves.<lb />The true turning point in the series occurred when<lb />Stone and Parker wrote up an ingenious series<lb />about Eric Cartman going to Los Angeles to cancel<lb /> oFamily Guy ?. Throughout the episode, Kyle and<lb />Stan commend oFamily Guy T for its irreverence and<lb />because it is not too opreachy ? (nudge, nudge).<lb /><lb />series, the creators got back to work on what they<lb />do best - writing the most off-the-wall, politically<lb />incorrect episodes they can think of; and boy do<lb />they have some ideas.<lb /><lb />This season has had plenty of highlights, from<lb />Bono as literally the biggest crap in the world, to<lb />terrorists attacking oour imagination. ? And who<lb />can forget the classic episode where Cartman pre-<lb />tends he has Tourette Ts syndrome so he can rip on<lb />Jews, white trash and the like, and actually ends<lb />up with the disease.<lb /><lb />Herein lies the beauty of oSouth Park. ? Stone<lb />and Parker can relentlessly poke fun at everything<lb />we view as politically incorrect in the society we<lb />live in, and still make it seem funny and true.<lb /><lb />I don Tt necessarily agree with everything Stone<lb />and Parker opreach ? about on their show, but that Ts<lb /><lb />. not the point. LEWIS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Saturday night, the wife and I went with<lb />some friends to see 30 Days of Night, the new<lb />movie about vampires terrorizing the town of<lb />Barrow, Alaska, for ... 30 days of night.<lb /><lb />I knew we were doomed as soon as I walked<lb />in and saw about 20 other people in the theater.<lb />You know what'l Tm talking about. We've all had<lb />a movie ruined by at least one jerk that thinks he<lb />or she is the only person in the theater. I knew<lb />that in a crowd of 20 there had to be at least one.<lb />I wasn Tt counting on 16. Unfortunately, that sort<lb />of thing happens more and more these days. _<lb /><lb />Children too often are brought to movies<lb />they don Tt need to see. Surprisingly, no rugrats<lb />turned out for 30 Days of Night, but how many<lb />other times have we tried to enjoy a little sex<lb />and violence while enduring a nearby child talk-<lb />ing incessantly, kicking our seats, or crossing<lb />in front of us every five minutes on their way to<lb />and from the bathroom? It Ts really fun when a<lb />kid behind you poops in their diaper and no one<lb />has the decency to take them out. People with<lb />children should stick to Disney movies or stay<lb />at home and wait for the DVD.<lb /><lb />I realize you can Tt really blame a child for<lb />acting like a child, but adults who act like chil-<lb />dren in the movie theater just need a punch in<lb />the mouth. Why can Tt anyone 16 or older go to<lb />the toilet by themselves? Every time one of the<lb />gals in the last row got up to go Saturday, four<lb />friends followed suit, stomping down the stairs<lb />like a herd of Clydesdales. :<lb /><lb />Cell phones are another annoyance. Perhaps<lb />the only thing more irritating than the woman<lb />two rows down gabbing all through the trailers<lb />was the bozo directly in front of me constantly<lb />flipping his phone open and shining that damn<lb />blue light in my face. He apparently had opted to<lb />go to the movies rather than attend a wake, but<lb />someone at the funeral home was kind enough ©<lb />to email him photos of the body in the casket,<lb />which he had to look at over and over, and pass<lb />around for the other members of his party to<lb />gawk at too.<lb /><lb />Don Tt you hate it when people decide to eat<lb />their evening meal at the movies? The couple<lb />behind us couldn Tt have had enough hands to<lb />carry everything they bought at the concession<lb />stand. I listened to crinkling wrappers and<lb />rattling bags throughout the first half of the<lb />picture. One of them must have been a messy<lb />eater, for constant wiping with noisy, rough<lb />paper napkins could be heard during most of<lb />the second half.<lb /><lb />One thing I failed to realize going in to 30<lb />Days of Night was that it Ts a comedy. It must<lb />be. Every time a vampire took another victim,<lb />practically everyone who was guilty of any<lb />of my aforementioned grievances hee-hawed<lb />like a jackass. The more gruesome the killing,<lb />the funnier it was. I fail to see the humor in<lb />someone's throat being ripped out, but then<lb />that Ts just me.<lb /><lb />I Tve yelled out oShut up! ? once or twice in<lb />a theater, and I Tve turned around and glared at<lb />many a person who thought I enjoyed having<lb />the back of my seat kicked; but remember that<lb />episode of Seinfeld where George decided to do<lb />the opposite of what his instincts told him to do?<lb />A guy behind George in a theater kept bugging<lb />him, so George turned around and basically<lb />went postal on the guy to the delight of the<lb />other patrons. Striking Americans of any<lb />age group, ethnicity and back-<lb />ground, this growing problem<lb />is often kept silent among<lb />others. Those suffering have<lb />two things in common: they are<lb /><lb /> poor and without enough food.<lb /><lb />There are many orgariizations<lb />across the nation that strive to<lb /><lb />help with this mounting crisis, .<lb /><lb />and ECU is no exception. Some<lb />students are taking action.<lb />The Collective Association<lb />for Basic and Immediate Needs<lb />(CABIN) was founded in May<lb />of this year with a mission to<lb />collaborate between all people<lb />and organizations currently on<lb />the campus of ECU. In a national<lb />study performed by the US<lb />Census Bureau, over 35.9 mil-<lb /><lb />_lion people live below the poy-<lb /><lb />erty line, 12:9 of which include<lb />children. Hunger is also a large<lb />problem, affecting 33.6 million<lb />people in America, roughly one<lb />in every ten households. Along<lb />with the rise of. hunger, over 96<lb />billion pounds of food is thrown<lb />away each year by the Food<lb />Service Industry.<lb /> oThe goal of CABIN is to<lb />provide both immediate and<lb />sustainable relief to underprivi-<lb /><lb />see CABIN page A10<lb /><lb /></p>

I was asked<lb />to leave after a year. I went<lb />to Europe to study art, ? said<lb />Redford during an interview at<lb />the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. oI was<lb />living a very Bohemian life with<lb />a lot of other students. They<lb />would talk about politics all the<lb />time. And I had nothing to say.<lb />That Ts when I became deter-<lb />mined to really read up about<lb />my country so I would have an<lb />answer for their questions. ?<lb /><lb />He returned to the United<lb />States after a few years abroad<lb />a opessimistic optimist. ? He<lb />knew that while the country<lb />faced major problems, there<lb />was potential for change. It just<lb />meant getting involved. "<lb /><lb />That Ts why Redford bal-<lb />anced his pursuit of an acting<lb />career, spawned by the art he<lb />studied overseas and fueled by<lb />the set design work he began<lb />doing when he returned to the<lb />United States, with an interest<lb />in history, current events and<lb />politics. He was determined<lb />to live a life of learning and<lb />being proactive when it came<lb />to politics. :<lb /><lb />That has continued for the<lb />past 50 years. Redford has<lb />fought for social causes such as<lb />the environment and American<lb />Indian rights. He founded the<lb />Sundance Institute and Film<lb />Festival, which helps small,<lb />independent filmmakers and<lb />has become a powerhouse in<lb />getting films noticed.<lb /><lb />In acting, his movies such<lb />as All the President Ts Men, The<lb />Candidate and Three Days of the<lb />Condor were driven by strong<lb />political messages.<lb /><lb />Now, he Ts on the road to talk<lb />about his new film, Lions for<lb />Lambs, which represents Red-<lb />ford Ts passion for politics. He<lb />directed the movie and co-stars<lb />with Tom Cruise and Meryl<lb />Streep. The film looks at Amer-<lb />ica Ts current war efforts in Iraq<lb />and Afghanistan. But instead of<lb /><lb />focusing on the gun battles and<lb /><lb />big special effects, the movie is<lb />about today Ts politics and how<lb /><lb />_ they mirror the past. It has<lb /><lb />MCT<lb /><lb />PAGE All<lb /><lb />Robert Redford is an actor in the upcoming movie Lions for Lambs.<lb /><lb />lots of dialogue. Cruise plays<lb />a Republican senator, Streep a<lb />cable news reporter and Red-<lb />ford a college professor.<lb /><lb />Lions for Lambs reflects<lb />Redford Ts belief that the Ameri-<lb />can people are being failed by<lb />the educational system, politi-<lb />cians and media more inter-<lb />ested in small matters such as<lb />a celebrity Ts rehabilitation stay<lb />than in bigger, important mat-<lb />ters such as the war.<lb /><lb />The film deals with the<lb />current conflict, but Redford<lb />doesn Tt want Lions for Lambs to<lb />be lumped in with other recent<lb />productions about the war, such<lb />as Rendition, Kingdom or Home<lb />of the Brave.<lb /><lb />. oFirst of all, if it had just<lb />been about the Iraq war, I<lb />wouldn Tt have been as inter-<lb />ested in it as other projects I<lb />am developing. I knew there<lb />would be a lot of films and<lb />documentaries about the Iraq<lb />war. That is a subject that is<lb />well covered, ? Redford said. oIt<lb />is far more interesting for me<lb />to do a film that involves educa-<lb />tion, the media and politics and<lb />the military by having these<lb />individual stories. ?<lb /><lb />What caught Redford Ts eye<lb />was that Lions for Lambs puts<lb />education, politics and the<lb />media under a blinding light.<lb />The idea of the film is to dig into<lb />these issues to find why such<lb />conditions continue to emerge<lb />at different times in history.<lb /><lb /> oIf you think about certain<lb />events in my lifetime McCar-<lb />thy, Watergate, Iran-Contra,<lb />this war, if you look under-<lb />neath it,.it is always the same<lb />sensibility that creates these<lb />conditions. Look at Nixon and<lb />his henchmen and what they<lb />did in Cambodia. Look at these<lb />guys and their henchmen; it is<lb />the same, ? Redford said.<lb /><lb />Redford is certain he Tll be<lb />hammered by some people in<lb />politics and the media because<lb />of Lions for Lambs.<lb /><lb />_ oMy problem is that I love<lb />this country. I wanted to make<lb /><lb />this film because I am in mourn-<lb /><lb />ing for my country. The film is<lb />about frustration. It Ts about<lb />sadness. It is about what we<lb />have lost that we didn Tt have to<lb />lose because we let this happen.<lb />I accept the fact that there will .<lb />be some controversy. The sad<lb />thing is that some of the contro-<lb />versy will be biased because our<lb />country is so polarized right<lb />now, it is horrible. Therefore,<lb />there will be those people out<lb />there who mischaracterize the<lb />film. If you miss the point, it<lb />would be easy to say this is a<lb />left-wing story, ? he said.<lb /><lb />But the actor isn Tt com-<lb />plaining. They split the<lb />volunteers into two groups:<lb /><lb />One group was instructed to T<lb /><lb />eat a diet of lean meat, poultry<lb />and fish, along with fruits and<lb />vegetables. They replaced foods<lb />such as white bread and highly<lb />processed breakfast cereals<lb />with whole grains. Meanwhile,<lb />the other group ate a typical<lb />Western diet.<lb /><lb />After 12 weeks, research-<lb />ers found that-the group eating<lb />more protein and whole grains<lb />experienced dramatic results,<lb />according to the researchers.<lb /><lb /> oThe acne of the boys on the<lb />higher-protein, low-glycemic<lb />index diet improved dramati-<lb />cally, by more than 50 percent,<lb />which is more than what you<lb /><lb />see with topical acne solutions, ?<lb />wrote senior author Neil Mann,<lb />an associate professor at the<lb />Royal Melbourne Institute of<lb />Technology in Australia.<lb /><lb />The typical teenager Ts diet,<lb />rich with things like doughnuts<lb />and cheeseburgers, appears to<lb />raise hormone levels, and surg-<lb />ing hormones have long been<lb />linked to acne.<lb /><lb /> oA diet high in processed<lb />foods pushes glucose and insu-<lb />lin levels higher, exacerbating<lb />the problem, but low-glycemic<lb />foods do the opposite, ? Mann<lb />said. oThe mechanism and the<lb />results are clear as day. ?<lb /><lb />Although the study was<lb />small and even the study Ts<lb />authors agree that more research<lb />is needed, Altamonte Springs,<lb />Fla. dermatologist Jerri Johnson<lb />thinks the study Ts authors may<lb />be on to something even though<lb />the web site for the Ameri-<lb />can Academy of Dermatology<lb />explicitly says there Ts no link<lb />between diet and acne.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts worth telling patients<lb />about because it shows that diet<lb />is important, ? said Johnson. oWe<lb />do know that acne is a more<lb />severe disease in Westerners ...<lb />so there Ts got to be some con-<lb />nection there. ?<lb /><lb /> oIndeed, ? said Dr. Barbara<lb />Reed, a Denver dermatologist<lb />and spokeswoman for the AAD.<lb /><lb />RIGGAN SHOE REPAIR. |\wa<lb /><lb />Specialize in sole and heel repair<lb />Shoe repair at its very best © low cost - high quality<lb />Cowboy Boots ¢ Work Shoes © Handbags ® Belts<lb /><lb />Rockport Soles ® Half Soles @ Full Soles<lb /><lb />KA<lb /><lb />5 3193-A East 10th St. Mon-Fri<lb />shoes in<lb />Greenville<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Greenville, NC 27858 7°*M"S:00PM<lb />for 35 yrs.<lb /><lb />758-0204 Seside Greenville<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />MONDRY<lb /><lb />Wings<lb /><lb />Buy 10 get 10 FREE<lb /><lb />Student Discount with ID 10%<lb />off (Food Only)<lb /><lb />© Open Daily at 11:30 am<lb />i ¢ Family Friendly<lb />e Catering Events<lb />e Meal Deal Welcome<lb />e Party Room Available<lb />with reservations<lb />(no cost)<lb />e Join us for your<lb />birthday and recieve<lb />FRIDAY a free desert<lb />mea omeletstarcgsia ° 1/2 Off appetizers<lb />Seafood and Steak Night before or after ECU<lb />event with ticket stub<lb />e Daily Lunch &amp;<lb />f Dinner Specials<lb />e Daily Bar Specials<lb /><lb />TUESDRY<lb />Kids Night<lb /><lb />Kids 9 &amp; under eat free<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY<lb />Carolina Fresh Seafood<lb /><lb />THURSDAY<lb />Made to Order Pasta Night<lb /><lb />Karaoke Night<lb /><lb />SRTURDRY<lb />Live Music<lb />Chicken and Rib Night<lb />Your Mama<lb /><lb />SUNDRY<lb />Brunch<lb /><lb />Karaoke ~ YOUR MAMA WOULD<lb /><lb />BE PROUD. His 408 all-purpose<lb />yards against Memphis<lb />last week was an ECU<lb />single-game record.<lb /><lb />-The movie, oWe Are<lb />Marshall, ? made a<lb />U.S. gross amount of<lb /><lb />~ $43,545,364 in theatres<lb />last December.<lb /><lb />-Marshall Ts record at home<lb />since 1991 is.106-13. The<lb />Thundering Herd Ts John C.<lb />Edwards Stadium hosted<lb />every NCAA Division I-AA<lb />National Championship<lb />game from 1991 to<lb /><lb />1996 and Mid-American<lb />Conference Championship<lb />contests in 1997, 1998,<lb />1999, 2000 and 2002.<lb /><lb />-ECU was one of two C-USA<lb />teams to allow 40 points<lb /><lb />or more and still win by<lb />more than a touchdown<lb />last week. The Pirates beat<lb />Memphis, 56-40, and Rice<lb />beat UTEP, 56- 48. These<lb />four teams scored a total of =<lb />208 points, which equates<lb />to 1.73 points per minute.<lb /><lb />MCT<lb /><lb />Linebacker Jeremy Chambliss (49), who has shined in an increased role the past few games, gets an interception against N.C. State with help from Fred Wilson.<lb /><lb />Two down, two to go on ECU Ts ofinal four tour ?<lb /><lb />JARED JACKSON<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />With only two games left in the Skip Holtz termed osingle elimination tourna-<lb />ment ?, ECU [6-4, 5-1] will pack its bags and head to Huntington, W.Va. to take on<lb />the Marshall [-8, 1-4] Thundering Herd. :<lb /><lb />The Pirates, who will forever be inked in Marshall history due to the much-profiled 3<lb />1970 plane crash following an ECU victory in Greenville (in which Marshall's charter |<lb />jet crashed on approach to Huntington Ts Tri-State Airport and claimed the lives of |F<lb />i 70 passengers and five crew members), sport an overall series lead of 6-2 against the<lb />Thundering Herd, winning four of the last five dating back to 1970.<lb /><lb />This year Ts match-up features two polar opposites, as the Pirates come in looking<lb />to boost their post season resume and continue their march to the conference title,<lb />while Marshall is just looking to knock off a top-notch program and build momentum<lb />heading into next year.<lb /><lb />Even with a sub-par record, Holtz believes that Marshall is a very capable team of<lb />knocking off his seemingly superior Pirate squad.<lb /><lb /> oWhen you look at Marshall, I think they are a much better football team than<lb />their record indicates, ? said Holtz, who is 2-0 against the Thundering Herd during his<lb />tenure at ECU, including a 33-20 win last year in Greenville.<lb /><lb /> oEveryone wanted to look at N.C. State and say they were a 1-5 football team, but |}<lb />they were one of the better teams that came in here this season. [Marshall] scares me<lb />because we are playing on the road and Marshall is an extremely tough place to play.<lb /><lb /> oJ don Tt quite know exactly what their record is at home, but when we went up there<lb />two years ago, they were 108-5 at home. We need to look past that record and look at<lb />the football team that we are going to play. ?<lb /><lb />The football team the Pirates are squaring up with is a hungry, desperate squad.<lb /> oMarshall doesn Tt have the chance to go to a bowl game but they will motivate<lb />themselves to play the role of spoiler against the number one team in the East [Divi-<lb />sion]. Coach Snyder is an excellent football coach. ?<lb />Marshall head coach Mark Snyder knows that the Pirates will be a stern challenge<lb />» for his young football team but is just glad to get back for some home cooking.<lb /> oWe are excited to get back home and we are going to be playing a very good East<lb />Carolina team, ? Snyder told Herdzone.com. oSkip (Holtz) has done very well down ff<lb />there with that program. :<lb /> oT think they are getting better each and every week. I don Tt think there is any<lb />H question about that and it Ts a mixture of things. Kass does one thing well and then<lb />Pinkney does another. I tell you what, it really looks like Pinkney and Jehuson are<lb />getting better each and every week. ? :<lb />; The Thundering Herd Ts record is very misleading, as Holtz stated every conference<lb />| game other than Marshall Ts blowout loss last week at the hands of UCF has been com-<lb />i) petitive. Earlier this year they played with West Virginia well into the fourth quarter<lb />} before finally being put away. Op<lb />With that said, the Marshall offense will present a tough challenge to the ECU flat<lb />defense, which is still a little banged up at a number of positions and contains a terrible<lb />| secondary that ranks 115 in the nation out of 119 teams.<lb />Marshall is averaging 400 yards per game, with 272 coming through the air, good<lb />| enough for fourth in C-USA. On the flip side, the Thundering Herd features a 1m<lb />| running attack that ranks 10th out of 12 teams.<lb />Senior quarterback Bernard Morris has enjoyed a decent season so far, averaging 260 |aal<lb />] passing yards a game, with 10 touchdowns on the year. His favorite target, sophomore ef<lb />ight end Cody Slate, is having a stellar season, averaging 74 yards receiving a game<lb />|| to go along with five touchdowns. :<lb />Darius Passmore, certainly one of the best names for a wide receiver ever, compli- |<lb />ments Slate in the Marshall pass attack, as he also has five touchdowns on the season<lb />while averaging almost 70 receiving yards a game.<lb />While Marshall on paper holds the advantage against the ECU defense, the: same<lb />could be said for the Pirates T offense.<lb />Coming into the contest Saturday, Marshall has been allowing nearly 37 points<lb />per game and 465 yards, which sets up the game this weekend up as an old fashioned<lb />C-USA shoot out.<lb /> oOn defense, their strength is their physical linebackers. I have been really impressed<lb />with [Maurice] Kitchens and Josh Johnson, ? said Holtz. oAll of their linebackers are<lb />about 250 pounds across the board and they run extremely fast. ?<lb />| . With all the weapons that Marshall seems to have on both sides of the ball, Holtz<lb />j offered the following assessment when asked wy he thought the Thundering Herd |y¥;<lb />have struggled this season.<lb /> oWe have looked at some things on film and all I see is them playing toe-to-toe |<lb />j with everyone on their schedule, ? said Holtz. oOne of their biggest problems right now<lb />is their turnovers. They are -14 in the turnover battle and have only gained five.<lb /><lb /> oWhen you watch their film and evaluate them athletically, they are not a 1-8 foot-<lb />ball team. If you fall into the trap of only looking at their record, you will leave with ff<lb />| your foot sticking out of your ear. I am concerned about this game. T<lb /><lb />One area that has concerned Holtz all season is without a doubt the Pirates T terrible<lb />} pass defense. Last week against Memphis, ECU gave up 416 yards through the air and<lb />| allowed two Tigers T receivers to finish the day with over a 100 yards receiving.<lb /><lb /> oYou have ten guys that are doing what they are supposed to; staying square, jam-<lb /><lb />Which remaining<lb />regular season game<lb />presents the toughest<lb />challenge for ECU?<lb /><lb />43%- at Memphis<lb />29%- at Marshall<lb />28%- vs. Tulane<lb /><lb />Pig Nation poll<lb /><lb />question:<lb /><lb />Which sistent bowl game<lb />for ECU would you most<lb />enjoy traveling to?<lb /><lb />A. State in convincing<lb />fashion.<lb /><lb />The Pirates T revenge tour<lb />made a stop in Maryland<lb />over the weekend, with ECU<lb />destroying Johns Hopkins<lb />11-0 before outpacing the<lb />Greyhounds of Loyola (Md)<lb />12-8. Loyola defeated ECU<lb />twice last year, including an<lb />overtime shootout victory in<lb />the [ACHA] South Regionals<lb />that ended the Pirates T hope for<lb />a bid to. nationals.<lb /><lb />ECU expected a tough<lb />game from Johns Hopkins, but<lb />the Pirates T depth managed to<lb />wear down an under-manned<lb />Blue Jays squad.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts really hard to know<lb />what these teams are going<lb />to bring this year, ? said Coach<lb />Wayne Cox. oWe thought<lb />Johns Hopkins was going to<lb />have a strong hockey team.<lb />We've got more-horses than<lb />we've ever had so I think we<lb />feel good where we are. The<lb /><lb />key for us is to play to our ©<lb /><lb />level. ? A strong opening period<lb />by ECU buried the Blue Jays<lb />in a hole too deep to climb out<lb />of. The Pirates hung five goals<lb />on Johns Hopkins in a span of<lb />10 minutes. :<lb /><lb />Freshman Nick Dinardo<lb />scored ECU Ts lone goal of the<lb />second period to extend the<lb />lead to 7-0.<lb /><lb />ECU added five more goals<lb />in the final period to complete<lb />the rout.<lb /><lb />Nathan Buhr, Dono-<lb />van Dean, and Sean Burns<lb />accounted for six Pirate goals,<lb />with each finding the net<lb />twice.<lb /><lb />Goaltender Brent Falcon<lb />went the distance for ECU and<lb />recorded his first shutout of<lb />the season.<lb /><lb /> oIt was hard to stick to our<lb />system, ? said Falcon of the<lb />lopsided match. oIt Ts so easy<lb />to just get out there and run<lb />through the team. We had a<lb /><lb />Photo by Samantha Johnson<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN * SPORTS<lb /><lb />few problems early on trying<lb />to stick to the system and move<lb />the puck well.<lb /><lb />_ oIt Ts easy to get excited and<lb /><lb />Just run your stats up, but we<lb /><lb />played a great game all around<lb />and obviously getting the shut-<lb />out is always good. ?<lb /><lb />More importantly than the<lb />revenge factor, the Loyola game<lb />was also crucial for points in<lb />the [ACHA] South rankings,<lb />which were released Oct. 28.<lb />The Pirates debuted at No. 5,<lb />the highest ranking in their<lb />short history. ECU is preceded<lb /><lb />Junior forward Tyler Falcon grabs the puck against N.C. Burns<lb />answered four minutes later<lb />with another goal and then<lb />assisted on a Joe Colatuno goal<lb />to stretch the lead to 10-7.<lb /><lb />The Greyhounds continued<lb />to hang around, again narrow-<lb />ing the deficit to two, but goals<lb />in the final minutes from senior<lb />Corey Fleitz and sophomore<lb />Chris Cesario put the game on<lb />ice for the Pirates.<lb /><lb />The first period was a back-<lb />and-forth affair, with Loyola<lb />snatching the lead three differ-<lb />ent times before ECU leveled<lb />the game at 4-4 before inter-<lb />mission.<lb /><lb />The: Greyhounds pounced<lb />on the Pirates again at the start<lb />of the second period before<lb />Duehring, Lang, and freshman<lb />Ryan Konchalski reeled off<lb />three straight goals to make it<lb />a 7-5 ECU advantage. And with an<lb />away date in January with No.<lb />1-ranked Georgia waiting, next<lb />weekend becomes even more<lb />important.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb /></p>
