Dean Lindo<lb />said. -<lb /><lb />Lindo is the head coach for the<lb />club and is an assistant professor<lb />for the Exercise 1000 program for<lb />figure skating that he also created.<lb /><lb />The club is registered with US<lb />Figure Skating, and is sending at<lb />least 10 of their athletes to Boston in<lb />February to represent the university<lb />for the 2008 intercollegiate season.<lb /><lb />- They also have a competition<lb />in Delaware next year. If they<lb />qualify for nationals, they will<lb />compete in Michigan with all<lb />of the colleges on the east coast.<lb /><lb /> oA long future goal for<lb />the club in general is to make<lb />it to Intercollegiate Nationals, ?<lb />Cecilia Lindo said.<lb /><lb />The club has three different<lb />program levels for thé skaters.<lb />The first program is the tutorial<lb />program, which is for students that<lb />are taking figure skating for their<lb />Exercise 1000 class.<lb /><lb />Students in this class do not<lb />neéd to have prior knowledge of<lb />figure skating. The coaches teach T<lb />them all of the basics that they<lb />need to know.<lb /><lb /> oThe next program level is for<lb />the recreational skaters who are<lb />just involved in the club to learn<lb />how to skate. It is a basic skills<lb />program based on the US Figure<lb /><lb />Skating sanction.<lb /><lb />The tutorial and rec-<lb />reational levels did a group<lb />member showcase at The<lb />Autumn Invitational Basic<lb />Skills Competition.<lb /><lb />According to Lindo,<lb />this is like a otheater on<lb />ice kind of performance. ?<lb />There.are about 15 stu-<lb />dents involved in these<lb />parts of the club.<lb /><lb />The third program<lb />level is for competitive skaters<lb />who represent the university<lb />in competitions.<lb /><lb /> oA lot of competitive skaters<lb />are coming to our school. A few<lb />skaters from Boston heard about<lb />the club:and came here to skate, ?<lb />Dean Lindo said.<lb /><lb /> The competitive skaters for the<lb />club include Justin Clements, Sasha<lb />Tokarev, Samantha Dayman, Liane<lb />Pavilonis and Haley Hawkes.<lb /><lb />The competitive skaters help<lb />to train the beginner skaters,<lb />who seem to have demonstrated<lb />improvement since they began<lb />the class.<lb /><lb /> oMy girls that I work with are<lb /><lb />Contributed image<lb /><lb />so wonderful and so hard working.<lb /><lb />I am so proud of them all. They<lb />have come a long way since we<lb />started, ? Cecilia Lindo said.<lb /><lb />All of the leveled skat-<lb />ers have to attend off-ice train-<lb />ing every Monday at the Stu-<lb />dent Recreation Center, where<lb /><lb />s a : ee 8<lb />ECFSC poses for a group picture.<lb /><lb />a ballet and Pilate teacher<lb />comes to teach.<lb /><lb />In addition, all skaters must<lb /><lb />meet at the track every morning<lb />at 7 a.m. to runa mile.<lb /><lb /> oTlove that the club is very active<lb />with all members, no matter what<lb />level of skating, ? Pavilonis said.<lb /><lb />The figure skaters are all<lb />coaches for Bladez on Ice and<lb />were judges in the Invitational.<lb /><lb />The sponsors for the ECFSC<lb />include Cyclone Taylor, located<lb />in Canada, Gold Ts Gym, which<lb />allows the club to use their<lb />facilities for cardio cinema,<lb />Kroger and Wal-Mart, which<lb />donated team shirts.<lb /><lb /> oWe are always looking for<lb />sponsors. Figure skating is a<lb />great sport and we welcome<lb />staff, faculty, students and spon-<lb />sors, ? Lindo said.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />ROTC continued from A4<lb /><lb />of sit-ups and a two-mile run.<lb /><lb /> oI was very surprised to have<lb />the highest score, T Brennis said.<lb /><lb /> oThe graders for the Ranger<lb />Challenge are very stri¢t,:and<lb />about 10 or 15 of my sit-ups<lb /><lb />- didn Tt meet the standare<lb />score was way lower than what<lb />I was aiming for. ?<lb /><lb />Brennis was awarded a coin<lb />from Cadet Command Sergeant<lb />Major for having the highest<lb />score at the event.<lb /><lb />The ECU Pirate Battalion<lb /><lb />& has been competing in the<lb />£ Ranger Challenge for more than<lb /><lb />§ 20 years and this year Ts first<lb />3 3 place finish showed that they<lb />= are tough competition for other<lb />8 schools in the state.<lb /><lb />ora group pic<lb /><lb />p<lb /><lb />posure and we used our heads a<lb />lot better, so I think that gave<lb />us an advantage in the different<lb />events, ? said Hill.<lb /><lb /> oPhysically, they were in the<lb />best shape out of all the schools<lb />up there and the leadership on<lb />our team really helped us win.<lb />They did a great job keeping<lb />each other motivated and not<lb />letting anyone get down. ? :<lb /><lb />In order to prepare for the<lb />Ranger Challenge, the cadets met<lb />every weekday morning at 6 a.m.<lb />to do guerilla drills, run, weight<lb />train and do calisthenics.<lb /><lb /> oMost of the cadets on the<lb />Ranger Challenge Team also did<lb />additional PT at another point in<lb /><lb />after stomping the competi<lb /><lb />e event.<lb /><lb />the day to supplement what they<lb />did in the morning, ? Hill said.<lb /><lb /> oThe cadets also practiced<lb />their land navigation skills,<lb />their marksmanship and they<lb />practiced forthe written test<lb />as well. We began preparing<lb />for the event as soon as school<lb />started, s6° we had about three<lb />months of intense work. ?<lb /><lb />At the Ranger Challenge,<lb />Cadet Theodore Brennis, an<lb />ECU sophomore, had the high-<lb />est score out of 200 cadets in the<lb />Army physical fitness test.<lb /><lb />Brennis scored 370 points<lb />out of a possible 300 points on<lb />the test, which consisted of two<lb />minutes of push-ups, two minutes<lb /><lb /> oThe Ranger Challenge is<lb />the only opportunity that we<lb />have to compete with other<lb />ROTC programs in our Bri-<lb />gade, ? Brennis said.<lb /><lb /> oYou can look at as many sta-<lb />tistics and numbers as you want<lb />to, but when it comes down to<lb />finding out which schools have<lb />the most prepared and dedicated<lb />cadets, the Ranger Challenge is<lb />an excellent gauge of the quality<lb />of a school Ts ROTC program.<lb />The skills that we try to develop<lb />in the Ranger Challenge are<lb />skills that every cadet is required<lb />to be proficient in to become an<lb />officer in the U.S. Army. ?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />! <lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />{ Today is the day. }<lb /><lb />Right 1s night<lb /><lb />MARGOT ROGERSON<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />First, before I begin, this article is going to<lb />be controversial. It is not, however, meant to dis-<lb />criminate against any religion or belief of someone<lb />else. I only want the opportunity to respond to a<lb />significant question in my life: Can atheists have<lb />morals?<lb /><lb />I am an atheist. My religious views, or rather<lb />lack thereof, are something that have shaped every<lb />aspect of my life, as it does for many people. There<lb />is one thing that I have found peculiarly in common<lb />about the responses of others to my being an athe-<lb />ist. Almost everyone I tell who is of a different<lb />religion, at least after some thought, will ask me<lb />how I can live morally without religion.<lb /><lb />My answer to this question: I live by my own<lb />moral code. I believe there is something innate<lb />in people that compel them to do the right thing.<lb />The oright ? thing being set by his or her own<lb />standard. That standard, of course, is influenced<lb />by the cultural framework of society at that time.<lb />Things that are oright ? for some are owrong ? for<lb />others and vice versa.<lb /><lb />Then the most important question becomes,<lb />what is the right thing? Each life gives way to<lb />different experiences and inherently different<lb />thoughts about such life. Is there one moral code?<lb />I do not think it is possible. For centuries philoso-<lb />phers have tried to develop a unified moral code.<lb />All of them have failed. :<lb /><lb />It is only since meeting other people that share<lb />my religious beliefs that I have been able to speak<lb />more openly. A good friend of mine, who most<lb />would denote as a ogoody two shoes, ? is also an<lb />atheist. She told me the most common response<lb />she receives after sharing this with-someone else<lb />is, oBut you seem so good, I didn Tt think you could<lb />be atheist! ?<lb /><lb />What does this phrase mean? Is the consensus<lb />really that because I do not believe in God that I<lb />cannot be a good person? Phrases such as this<lb />imply that atheists do not live by the same moral<lb />code as others, or by none at all.<lb /><lb />I have had similar experiences. Many people<lb />have asked me, after learning my religious origins,<lb /> oWhy don Tt you do whatever you want because<lb />you don Tt have to worry about going to hell? ? I do<lb />the right thing (in my terms) because it makes me<lb />feel like a beneficial member of society. If I wrong<lb />someone, the guilt I feel makes me not want to<lb />commit the same act again. It Ts not the fear of<lb />going to hell because that fear does not exist for<lb />an atheist.<lb /><lb />I did not choose to have the mindset of,an<lb />atheist. I Tm not sure why, at this moment, I feel<lb />compelled to share my side of things. As I have<lb />gotten older, I have made some new realizations<lb />about myself and my life. A year ago I would never<lb />have told someone new, at a university in the heart<lb />of the Bible belt, that I did not believe in God.<lb />Even today, I would have preferred this article run<lb />anonymously.<lb /><lb />I do not want to defend my religion against<lb />that of another, as better or worse. Who am I to<lb />say? But I do want to defend my character, as it is<lb />often judged by misconceptions about my religious<lb />preference. My desire was to write an article that<lb />stated that morals exist without religion. Right<lb />is right, but because you have determined it to be<lb />right for you.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Let your voice<lb /><lb />be heard<lb /><lb />Shed apathy, gain power<lb /><lb />SARAH CAMPBELL<lb />EDITOR IN CHIEF<lb /><lb />Imagine a society where the citizens have<lb />no influence on the laws that govern their daily<lb />lives.<lb /><lb />One such society could easily become a reality<lb />in America if the population continues to remain<lb />politically apathetic.<lb /><lb />Voting is a right that many people in this<lb />country appear to view as a burden, rather than<lb />a privilege. :<lb /><lb />Taking the time to research political candidates<lb />seems to some like too much work, when in fact it<lb />is an essential part of the voting process. Forming<lb />an educated political opinion grants citizens the<lb />power to ignite change.<lb /><lb />The people that are elected to represent us on the<lb />local, state and national levels of government make<lb />the decisions that affect our everyday lives from taxes<lb />to healthcare and education to public safety.<lb /><lb />Today, the City of Greenville will hold elections<lb />in order to appoint City Council members, and fill<lb />the positions of mayor, alderman and commissioner<lb />seats. Less than a year from now (Nov. 4, 2008, to<lb />be exact), people across the country will have the<lb />opportunity to vote in the election that will deter-<lb />mine the next President of the United States. .<lb /><lb />Those who don Tt vote in these elections don Tt<lb />have the right to gripe about the decisions that are<lb />made, because they didn Tt take part in appointing<lb />representatives.<lb /><lb />If everyone lived by the philosophy, omy vote<lb />doesn Tt make a difference ? then voting would<lb />become obsolete and the idea of democracy would<lb />cease to exist.<lb /><lb />I urge you all to put aside the urge to purse<lb />apathy and let your voice be heard by heading to<lb />the polls to cast your vote.<lb /><lb />' This writer can be contacted at<lb />editor@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />TUESDAY NOVEMBER 6, 2007<lb /><lb />pace A5<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />If a girl makes you wear a condom, you<lb />probably didn Tt need it, and if she doesn Tt<lb />make you wear one you probably should<lb />have worn two. In this<lb />case, not a sentence, not a paragraph, but an entire<lb />diatribe you took for fact. I had a great punch line<lb />and twist lined up for last week Ts piece, but while it<lb />may have been cut literally last second, I probably<lb />got more of a response without it.<lb /><lb />A professor of mine recalled the Sokal Hoax,<lb />in which a prominent physicist submits a blatantly<lb />false article to a scholarly journal. The essay is<lb />obviously a farce in the field, combining Quantum<lb />Mechanics with political implications, however<lb />to his surprise, generates positive response. Only<lb />after Sokal pointed out his own story was the<lb />Emperor with no clothes did people realize they<lb />had been taken for fools.<lb /><lb />So let us recap last week, shall we? A writer<lb />with a history of publications asserting why he<lb />would never convert to Christianity has a radical<lb />change of heart. He runs an essay filled to the brim<lb />with fallacious "Christian rhetoric that anyone<lb />with an entry college philosophy class under their<lb />belt should have seen through in an instant.<lb /><lb />Right off the bat, I play the mother of all logical<lb />fallacies with good old begging the question. P T is<lb /><lb />true, because, well, P T is true. We know the Bible<lb />is true because it is the Word of God. We know<lb />it is the Word of God because Jesus says so and<lb />we know Jesus says this, because it is in the Bible,<lb />which of course is true...Wait...What?<lb /><lb />Next I pulled from the Evangelist playbook a<lb /><lb /> T false dichotomy. You either do this, or that. One<lb /><lb />is presented with two options and told these are<lb />the only options to choose from. This of course<lb />is among the most elementary of argumentative<lb />canards that I even went as far as to verbally elbow<lb />you in on the joke by referencing its other name as<lb />the oblack or white ? fallacy.<lb /><lb />The article ended with something so overly<lb />sarcastic even I threw up a little in my throat<lb /><lb /> glancing back over it. I will set the record straight<lb /><lb />now and for future publications. I am content in my<lb />beliefs and bluntly put, will not change. If you want<lb />to know what they are, ask me. Really. Not only<lb />does this coffee shop spot the landscape of almost<lb />every major city in the United States, Starbucks can<lb />be found in Rome, London, Amsterdam, Beijing,<lb />Tokyo, Sydney, Rio de Janeiro...and Baghdad.<lb /><lb />Maybe it Ts because of the caffeine jolt that busi-<lb />nessmen and women need on their commute to work<lb />in the morning, or the energy kick that students<lb />crave after an all-night study session. Or maybe<lb />the world loves Starbucks because of its designer<lb />label. Is the coffee really so good that the world Ts<lb />population spends billions of dollars a year on the<lb />product? Or is it the notion that carrying around<lb />that iced latte or espresso in a neatly-packaged Star-<lb />bucks-labeled cup brings some kind of notoriety or<lb />power? Are you only cool if you carry something<lb />from Starbucks? :<lb /><lb />The taste or look of Starbucks coffee is not the<lb />point of this article, but the fact remains that on<lb />almost every corner, in almost every country across<lb />the globe, there Ts a Starbucks. A beacon to caffeine-<lb /><lb />deprived individuals in need of an energy fix.<lb /><lb />What Ts interesting to me is the fact that the<lb />U.S., in its occupation of overseas countries, has<lb />been stationed in countries like Iraq. . which, guess<lb />what, has a Starbucks. So while American soldiers,<lb /><lb />Iraqi women and children, Iraqi soldiers and jour-<lb /><lb />nalists are being killed in warfare, the backdrop is<lb />a Starbucks coffee shop. A screaming American<lb />advertisement disguised as a designer coffee chain.<lb />At least that Ts what many Iraqi people feel.<lb /><lb />The infusion of: American movies, TV shows,<lb />stores, restaurants and other products into their<lb />society is seen as a stripping of their own unique<lb />culture. :<lb /><lb />And Americans wonder why the rest of the<lb />world hates us. It might be our policies that turn<lb />them off to the U.S., but I think that the fact that<lb />most of the world is overflowing with American<lb />businesses ticks people (who are not Americans)<lb />off, too. While most Americans don Tt give a second<lb />thought to the fact that there Ts a Starbucks on<lb />every corner, citizens of other countries do think<lb />about it.<lb /><lb />Here Ts something to think about: what if all<lb />of a sudden the world was dominated by mostly<lb />Chinese businesses? Is that a ridiculous thought?<lb />They have more people than the U.S., and according<lb />to Bill Gates, a bigger intelligence pool...so is it<lb />crazy to think that Chinese culture could dominate<lb />the world?<lb /><lb />As Americans, we think that this could never<lb />happen. And that Ts another reason why people in<lb />other countries hate us. They see us as egocentric<lb />and self-absorbed.<lb /><lb />While many college students don Tt follow poli-<lb />tics, they can understand the feeling of invasion that<lb />these other areas feel.<lb /><lb />They perceive America as a threat to their<lb />cultural identity, their sense of self. And I can<lb />understand that. We might be living in the most<lb />powerful country in the world, but it might not be<lb />like that for long.<lb /><lb />In 1900, England was the most powerful coun-<lb />try in the world. It had the best military, the best<lb />schools and world domination, but not anymore.<lb />What makes the U.S. think that we will stay in<lb />power forever?<lb /><lb />In the meantime, the world over runs on Star-<lb />bucks. But there Ts no guarantee that it will last<lb />for long.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Kimberly Bellamy Rachel King -<lb />News Editor Opinion Editor<lb />Greg Katski Ronnie Woodward<lb /><lb />Sports Editor Asst. In addition<lb />to the ECU career kills record<lb />she obtained earlier this season,<lb />shé also holds the top-11 single<lb />gamne kill totals in program<lb />history. She now ranks 16th<lb />on-the all-time C-USA chart<lb />for.career kills as well. She has<lb />tallied an amazing 57 games<lb />with double-digit kills out of<lb /><lb />_ her last 61. Earning numerous<lb />tournament accolades as well<lb />as national player-of-the-week<lb />honors earlier this season she<lb />also leads the team in kills,<lb />service aces, blocks and points<lb />per game.<lb /><lb />After the break the Pirates<lb />kept the momentum they had<lb />gained before the half. They<lb />steamrolled to an easy 30-14<lb />victory to sweep the match, 3-<lb />0. Thompson added 10 kills to<lb />Wernert Ts total and freshman<lb />Katie Koop notched seven on<lb />only eight attempts to add to<lb />her.match-high 38 assists. The<lb />Pirates were led defensively by<lb />sophomores Hannah Fenker<lb />and Stephanie Turner, who each<lb />posted 13 digs. After the match,<lb />coach Rushing was pleased<lb />with his team Ts play, but it was<lb />quite clear that he expected<lb />nothing less.<lb /><lb /> oWe just played some good<lb />solid volleyball, ? said Rush-<lb />ing. oI think the two times we<lb />played them this year I thought<lb />that we were stronger, and I<lb />think we played at our level.<lb />Some of the losses we Tve had<lb />this. year we have given up a lot<lb />of easy points, and we didn Tt do<lb />that tonight. ?<lb /><lb />He was also full of praise for<lb />his prized senior. When asked<lb />about her contribution to the<lb />team, Rushing had no trouble<lb />stating her importance.<lb /><lb /> oShe Ts dominant, ? he said.<lb /> oWe're going to miss her a lot.<lb />We're going to miss her as a<lb />player and as a person. ?<lb /><lb />Wernert was especially excited<lb /><lb />to get a win on senior night.<lb /><lb /> oIt feels great, everything is<lb />just perfect, ? said Wernert. oWe<lb />all just made a team effort to get<lb />it done quick, and it was fun. ?<lb /><lb />With the emotions of Friday<lb />night still evident, the Pirates<lb />again took the court Sunday<lb />afternoon with vengeance on<lb />their minds against a Southern<lb />Miss team that had defeated<lb />them earlier in the season in<lb />its only conference win of the<lb />season.<lb /><lb />The Pirates again domi-<lb />nated from the outset. They<lb />took an early advantage, 9-0,<lb />behind the serve of Thompson.<lb />Though S. Miss. did come back<lb />to within five at 20-15, the<lb />Pirates made a run of their own<lb />to close out game one, 30-19.<lb /><lb />Game two was much closer<lb />than game one. With the scores<lb />level at 22-22, it took a 5-O run<lb />on the serve of Turner to push<lb />the Pirates to a 30-23 win.<lb /><lb />Game three saw S. Miss.<lb />creep even closer to taking the<lb />match to another game. With<lb />the Pirates holding a six-point<lb />lead and sitting on match point,<lb />the Golden Eagles reeled off<lb />four straight points. Flash-<lb />backs of games the Pirates let<lb />slip away earlier in the season<lb />came to mind, but they showed<lb />maturity, and on the fifth try<lb />at match point ECU earned<lb />the sweep.<lb /><lb />Wernert again led the team<lb />with 19 kills, Melissa Zent-<lb />ner added 11 and Thompson<lb />chipped in with nine. Koop<lb />again piled on the assists with<lb />a gaudy 41 and Fenker led the<lb />defensive effort with ten digs,<lb />while Trish Monroe added six<lb />of her own.<lb /><lb />ECU ends the regular<lb />season next weekend with<lb />matches, at UAB and Mem-<lb />phis, respectively.
