status<lb /><lb />Change provides<lb />opportunity for growth<lb /><lb />NIA RICHARDSON<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The health programs at ECU<lb />have received new status, as the<lb />names of the Schools of Allied<lb />Health Sciences and Nursing<lb />have been changed to the College<lb />of Allied Health and the College<lb />of Nursing.<lb /><lb />The status change is a direct<lb />result of the colleges having a 60<lb />percent increase in enrollment,<lb />student credit hours and degrees<lb />given over the past five years.<lb /><lb /> oThe awarding of col-<lb />lege recognition status pro-<lb />vides recognition of our tre-<lb />mendous growth, productivity<lb />and complexity and aligns us &amp;<lb /><lb />more closely with other colleges Se<lb /><lb />at ECU, said Sylvia Brown,<lb />dean of the College of Nursing.<lb />The College of Allied Health<lb />Sciences currently has over 700<lb />students enrolled in nine depart-<lb />ment programs, which include<lb physical therapy, physician<lb />assistant studies and rehabilita-<lb />tion studies.<lb />The College of Nursing<lb />has an enrollment of over 1000<lb />students in its undergraduate,<lb />masters and doctoral programs.<lb />Both colleges are housed in<lb />the 270,000 square foot Allied<lb />Health Sciences and Nursing<lb />building that sits adjacent to<lb />Brody School of Medicine.<lb /><lb />Study conducted by<lb />physician at Brody<lb /><lb />WHITNEY JENKINS<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />Women in eastern North<lb />Carolina who have breast<lb />cancer are discovering their<lb />own tumors through self-<lb />examination procedures.<lb /><lb />Approximately 75 percent<lb />of tumors are found by breast<lb />cancer patients themselves,<lb />even among women who<lb />receive mammograms.<lb /><lb />These tumors are often<lb />larger and more difficult to<lb />treat, according to research<lb />studies conducted at ECU.<lb /><lb />Andrea Rosenberg, a<lb />second-year resident physi-<lb />cian at the ECU Brody School<lb />of Medicine, said the best thing<lb />women can do in order to catch<lb />breast cancer at-its earliest<lb />stages is to educate themselves<lb />about the warning signs of<lb />breast cancer.<lb /><lb /> othe warning signs of<lb />breast cancer include a change<lb />in the size or shape of their<lb />breast, a lump or thickening<lb />in the breast or area around<lb />the breast or underarm, warm<lb />sensations in the breast, a<lb />change in the look or feel of<lb />the nipple including an inward<lb />or sunken nipple, rash on the<lb />nipple, nipple tenderness or<lb />discharge, or any breast pain<lb />or changing in the look or feel<lb />of the skin on the breast, nipple<lb />or areola, T Rosenberg said.<lb /><lb />A cancer study led by<lb />Rosenberg analyzed the medi-<lb />cal records of more than 1,500<lb />women diagnosed with breast<lb />canger at ECU between 1999<lb />and 2004.<lb /><lb />The women surveyed<lb />crossed all demograph-<lb />ics, educational and income<lb />levels. Findings suggest that<lb />self-examination remains an<lb />important method of breast<lb />cancer identification.<lb /><lb />Rosenberg and her<lb />team found that 12 percent<lb />of the women had tumors<lb />that were at least five cen-<lb />timeters in diameter.<lb /><lb /> oA tumor five centimeters<lb />or more in diameter would<lb />be at least a stage 2 cancer, <lb />Rosenberg said.<lb /><lb />Breast cancer is classified<lb />in four stages, and stage 2<lb />cancer is advanced and may<lb />affect lymph nodes.<lb /><lb />Diagnosing cancer before<lb />stage 3 can make a significant<lb />difference in treatment and<lb />quality of life for patients,<lb />according to Rosenberg.<lb /><lb />The findings led research-<lb />ers at the Leo W. Jenkins<lb />Cancer Center, a clinic at the<lb />Brody School of Medicine,<lb />to recommend that patients<lb />be taught and educated in<lb />their physicians T offices on<lb />how to properly perform<lb />breast self-examinations.<lb /><lb />This early detection<lb />method should be used in con-<lb />Junction with mammograms.<lb /><lb /> oPrimary care physicians<lb />need to spend more time with<lb />their patients in teaching them<lb />the correct procedure in how<lb />to perform a proper self breast<lb />exam and need to remind their<lb />patients to continue to perform<lb />them, Rosenberg said.<lb /><lb />Rosenberg Ts research con-<lb />cluded that the likelihood<lb />of breast cancer survival is<lb />improved by early diagnosis.<lb />A patient is more likely to<lb />be cured or have prolonged<lb />survival if she is faced with a<lb />smaller tumor. |<lb /><lb />While women often dis-<lb />cover their own cancer, the<lb />cancer discovered by mam-<lb />mograms is identified earlier<lb /><lb />in the same building.<lb /><lb />he acility provides a p ace for students to study and engage in hands-on medical studies.<lb /><lb />ottered in the sprin<lb /><lb />Clipart.com<lb /><lb />CLIVE OWEN<lb />_ JULIANNE MOORE<lb />_ MICHAEL CAINE<lb /><lb />CHILDREN.<lb />~uMEN |<lb /><lb />UNITED<lb /><lb />The movies above will be featured in the class, Post-9/11 Cinema and American Culture, next spring.<lb /><lb />Sonne eee a |<lb /><lb />and university to offer our stu-<lb />dents a fun, interactive and safe<lb />environment in which they can<lb />celebrate Halloween, T said Jacob<lb />Tidwell, assistant director of stu-<lb />dent activities and major events.<lb /><lb />Tidwell thinks this event<lb />gives students the ability to enjoy<lb />the festivities without having to<lb />deal with the large number of<lb />people who go downtown.<lb /><lb /> oWe put forth a great deal of<lb />effort to ensure that our students 8<lb />have a good time while being safe<lb />at the same time, Tidwell said.<lb /><lb />Students age 18 or older who<lb /><lb />see MADNESS page A4 see TUMORS page A5<lb /><lb /></p>

<lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />{Happy Halloween! }<lb /><lb />PCs reign<lb />supreme<lb /><lb />Macs are for little girls<lb /><lb />ALEX LAROCCA<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />My very first computer was one of the original<lb />Macs my parents bought for 100 bucks. At age<lb />nine, this was the first experience I ever had with<lb />a computer, and at age nine, this was my first and<lb />last time to ever own a Mac. I realize that Macs<lb />have come a long way since then and I have used a<lb />large array of new Macs, from the Powerbooks to<lb />the desktop Macs, but no matter the size, weight,<lb />or style, they have always sucked.<lb /><lb />The history of the two can be run down like<lb />this: Bill Gates helped create what is the general-<lb />ized PC and Steve Jobs is owner of Apple. At one<lb />point, Apple was on top of the world, but reality<lb />rained down when Bill Gates outmaneuvered Jobs<lb />and now everyone uses PCs. Fast-forward to about<lb />10 years ago, and Macs began to create these dis-<lb />gusting multi-colored, transparent computers and<lb />laptops that a bunch of contemporary businesses<lb />thought were innovative. This gave enough money<lb />to Apple to eventually create what would remake<lb />them: the iPod.<lb /><lb />I hate iPods and because of iPods I hate Macs<lb />also. iPods are cheap, faulty and when they break<lb />the self-proclaimed ogeniuses at the Apple store<lb />tell you to buy a new one. Everyone fell for the<lb />iPod craze and I have had three iPods now and had<lb />trouble with all of them. Around the same time<lb />Apple created the godly iPod they began pumping<lb />out these ostylish laptops with super-cool names<lb />like oPowerbook or the grand desktop, oG4. <lb />Having gained enough confidence, Apple actually<lb />began to have commercials with the audacity to<lb />bash PCs. .<lb /><lb />We have all seen these commercials: the hip,<lb />young white kid, Mac, next to that pathetic office-<lb />attired white guy, PC. This of course could be a<lb />take as Macs seem to be only for people with style<lb />and a sense of individualism, as they make it seem.<lb />This isn Tt what gets me, though. What gets to me<lb />is when they make a PC seem confined to only oPC<lb />things whereas the Mac is so adaptable it attaches<lb />itself only to its owner.<lb /><lb />First off, every make looks exactly the same<lb />and comes in black, white or metallic silver: Every<lb />single desktop is set up like the next one and, in all<lb />honesty, has confusing manners in order to really<lb />get into the computer to see what Ts going on. You<lb />are not allowed to.open your Mac, not only because<lb />most Mac users have NO idea what is Bom on in<lb />theirs, but because it is only right for a ogenius at<lb />an Apple store to fix anything with an Apple on it,<lb />leaving anyone with a Mac problem at the mercy<lb />of a money-grubbing franchise.<lb /><lb />PCs on the other hand come in no distinct<lb />manner. I can buy one from Dell, HP, IBM, etc., or<lb />if I want (and everyone should) I can just buy every-<lb />thing I need from Newegg.com or Tigerdirect.com<lb />for a minimum of at least $400. Talk about robot-<lb />and office-like...there are around 139 companies<lb />that make PC cases (just cases) and I only caught<lb />that amount on www.Newegg.com. I am not going<lb />to bother to go into the number of companies that<lb />make PC processors, RAM, Video-Cards, etc. The<lb />accessories alone for PCs beat any variety Mac<lb />produces. The amount of mice, monitors, fans,<lb />cooling systems, etc., outweighs that skinny little<lb />dweeb in the commercial. Also, Microsoft is so<lb />very well-connected to PC, but if this was such a<lb />bad thing then why do so TARY Macs come with<lb />Microsoft Office?<lb /><lb />All Apple wants is mass amounts of money and<lb />they will pump out this absurd angle until they<lb />go under. Just last year my girlfriend Ts hard-drive<lb />on her Powerbook just stopped working. She was<lb />forced to take it to a ogenius. He came back out<lb />to tell her the hard-drive was completely busted.<lb />His reasoning, perhaps to a Mac user, made per-<lb />fect sense oEventually they all just break. $300<lb />later, she had her brand-new hard-drive ready to<lb />eventually break with all of her personality, I hate<lb />the ogeniuses because hard-drives don Tt all just<lb />eventually break. I have never had a hard-drive<lb />Just break on my PC, and I have never had to pay<lb />$300 for a hard-drive either. <lb /><lb />I can only hope that people realize how the<lb />extra money you put into your Mac doesn Tt make<lb />it work extra good, the-extra small iPod doesn Tt<lb />make it extra convenient and the extra Is don Tt<lb />make anything work extra-well.<lb /><lb />Sources: http://www.theregister.<lb />co.uk/2007/10/08/ipod_nano_blaze_horror/<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />©o7<lb /><lb /> oSorry, we had to return your checks and charge<lb />you a lot because you didn Tt have enough after<lb />we charged you a lot for not having enough. <lb /><lb />THURSDAY NOVEMBER 1,2007 pace AG<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />It's hot chocolate time! My orandom rvommate .turned out to<lb /><lb />be an acquaintance from high school and about<lb />ten of my closest went there whom I saw almost<lb />every day. The university was about the same size<lb />as here in a small town with only a Wal-Mart, a<lb />few fast food restaurants, and LOTS of bars. To<lb />those who complain about Greenville being too<lb /><lb />. small, you haven't seen small until you Tve been to<lb /><lb />Oxford, Ohio.<lb />Quite frankly, I just wasn Tt happy at<lb />Miami University. There was absolutely no diver-<lb /><lb />sity, with 60 percent of the population being Greek |<lb /><lb />Life and I didn Tt feel like the school was fit for<lb />me. It was a comfort zone (which is convenient at<lb />times) but it was high school all over again, leaving<lb />no room for me to grow as an individual. I could<lb />always fall back on calling my best friend from<lb /><lb />home or drive home to the same boring city that.<lb /><lb />I've lived in all my life. I never was challenged to<lb />meet new people and learn new things. Everyone<lb />was the same, no one seemed real to me. I never<lb />felt as if | was getting the full college experience<lb />I needed or really risk going into the real world.<lb />It was a big operfect bubble I felt trapped in but<lb />yet not perfect at all.<lb /><lb />I came to ECU because it was far away<lb />with a chance to start fresh with knowing no<lb />one. The school is great with its pros and cons.<lb />(but what school doesn Tt). The student body is<lb />completely diverse and I meet a new and exciting<lb />individual everyday. Everyone seems real here,<lb />working hard for his or her education or working<lb />hard outside of school. I get to explore a new area;<lb />granted, Greenville isn Tt the most exciting city, but<lb />Raleigh and Wilmington are nothing to complain<lb />about. The experience being away from home has<lb />been awesome because I started completely: over.<lb />It is a great time to really grow as an individual<lb />and become independent. ECU is awesome. Go<lb />PIRATES!<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Pro-life and<lb />Pro-Giuliani<lb /><lb />- Or, seeing the forest and not<lb />just the trees :<lb /><lb />J.D. LEWIS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Tama born again Christian, I'm pro-life, and I sup-<lb />port Rudy Giuliani for President of the United States.<lb />The former New York City mayor is my preferred<lb />Republican candidate, and the refusal of so many in the<lb />evangelical community to even consider him based solely<lb />on his pro-choice views saddens me. They'll probably<lb />even kick me out of the group after reading this.<lb /><lb />Like it or not, in 1973, seven unelected justices on<lb />the U.S. Supreme Court stripped the right of millions<lb />of Americans to regulate abortion through their elected<lb />legislators at the state level. It is now the law of the land,<lb />and short of an amendment to the Constitution, there is<lb />little the President or Congress can do aboutit. Sure, the<lb />President can appoint new justices to the Supreme Court,<lb />but these are lifetime appointments, and someone has to<lb />die or resign first ... and it seems that just can Tt happen<lb />fast enough for the religious right.<lb /><lb />The mayor's promises not to make abortion a litmus<lb />test for new justices and to appoint oconservative strict<lb />constructionist judges aren't what most evangelicals<lb />want to hear. Never mind that our soldiers are dying<lb />in Iraq, that there are still Islamic nutcases who want<lb />to blow us off the map, that we're being held hostage<lb />by OPEC and raped every time we fill our cars up with<lb />gas, or that we're being invaded by illegals from south<lb />of the border; their only concern, unfortunately, is that<lb />a presidential candidate commits to appointing justices<lb />who will overturn Roe v. Wade.<lb /><lb />With that in mind, let Ts look at some fees Before<lb />1973, when the Court cleared the way for abortion as a<lb />form of contraception, the procedure was already legal<lb />in all fifty states. Thirty states permitted abortion only<lb />to save the life of the mother. Sixteen states, including<lb />North Carolina, allowed abortions to save the life of the<lb />mother and in cases involving rape or incest. Four states<lb />allowed for some form of abortion on demand. Restricted<lb />in most states, yes, but legal all the same. Where was the<lb />pro-life outcry back then?<lb /><lb />If someday, the Supreme Court should overturn Roe<lb />v. Wade " and I don't believe it will " it won't be the<lb />end of the world and the return to back-alley abortions<lb />that pro-choice radicals like Ted Kennedy would have<lb />us believe; neither will it be the final nail in abortion Ts<lb />coffin that most pro-lifers believe it will be ... as I once<lb />did. Abortion will still be legal, and overturning Roe<lb />will simply mean that we the people have our right back<lb />to set the policy in our respective states.<lb /><lb />While I am pro-life, I am also a realist, and I believe<lb />that abortion is a necessary evil in some circumstances.<lb />I was once pro-life to the point of making Jesse Helms<lb />look liberal, and then someone asked me a simple ques-<lb />tion: If your wife was raped and became pregnant with<lb />that man Ts child, do you think she should have to carry<lb />that child to term? I cannot honestly say that I think she<lb />should, and I don Tt believe that many evangelicals could<lb />honestly say that either.<lb /><lb />Since then, my position has been that of our state Ts<lb />pre-Roe. I believe abortion is acceptable in cases of rape<lb />or incest, and if necessary to save the life of the mother.<lb />If it came down to losing: my wife or our unborn child,<lb />I'd obviously want the doctors to do everything in their<lb />power to save my wife. A fellow Christian once asked<lb />me did I not believe God could intervene and save them<lb />both. Of course I believe He could, and I'd pray that He<lb />would ... but maybe that person has more faith than I do.<lb />I wouldn't be willing to take the chance. We could always<lb />try to have more children, but I could never replace my<lb />wife. That may sound harsh to some, but I do not feel<lb />that my position on abortion conflicts with my Christian<lb />faith in any way. I have a clear conscience.<lb /><lb />I most certainly respect that my opinion isn Tt going<lb />to be everyone else's, nor do I expect it to be, but I have<lb />little respect for single issue voters, be they pro-life or<lb />pro-gun (which I am also). According to nearly, every<lb />national poll, Rudy Giuliani is the only Republican<lb />with a snowball Ts chance of defeating Hillary Clinton<lb />in the general election. It is just the height of ignorance<lb />for evangelicals to write Rudy Giuliani off for being<lb />pro-choice in favor of electing a pro-choice militant like<lb />Hillary Clinton, who many of these same folks view as<lb />Satan incarnate. It just doesn Tt make any sense.<lb /><lb />Sources include Constitutional Law for a Changing<lb />America: Rights, Liberties, and Justice by Lee Epstein and<lb />Thomas G. According to the<lb />American Obesity Association, 64.5<lb />percent of adults age 20 or older,<lb />including college students, are over-<lb /><lb />weight. Over<lb /><lb />half of the<lb /><lb />college popu-<lb />lation is over-<lb />weight, which can cause<lb />health difficulties in<lb />later years. Accord-<lb />ing to Tara Barber, assis-<lb />tant director for nutrition services at<lb />Campus Recreation and Well-<lb />ness, there are often several rea-<lb /><lb />sons why ECU students gain weight.<lb /> oFor many students, especially fresh-<lb />men, they are making decisions about food<lb />on their own, rather than their parents<lb />doing the grocery shopping and meal<lb />preparations. This can lead to unhealthy<lb />decisions about food, said Barber.<lb />Barber also attributes student weight<lb />gain to not being physically active and<lb />choosing to drink alcohol, giving students -<lb />excess calories that add up over time. She<lb />said that students should be aware of what<lb />they are eating, especially in the dining<lb />halls, because many have the tendency<lb />to overeat, overlooking portion sizes and<lb />not knowing when they are satisfied and<lb />not stuffed.<lb />For those affected by serious<lb />weight gain in college, there are many<lb />resources to be taken advantage of for<lb />weight management.<lb />The Campus Recreation and Well-<lb /><lb /> ness Department offers numerous options<lb /><lb />for physical activity including personal<lb />training, group fitness classes, walking<lb />programs, adventure trips and more. Score fast<lb />Uncharacteristically, the Pirates were able to put<lb /><lb />last week. ECU needs to do the same this week<lb />by smacking Memphis in the mouth early. On the<lb />season, ECU has been outscored 68-34 in the<lb />first quarter so coming out and putting up points<lb />on the first few possessions will be key.<lb /><lb />2. Secondary play<lb /><lb />The Pirates will once again be facing a opass<lb />first team this week. Senior quarterback Martin<lb />Haskins has picked defenses apart this year with<lb />10 touchdown passes and almost 1,500 yards,<lb />despite not playing in two games. ECU's defen-<lb />sive line must provide pressure, but creating<lb />turnovers and not allowing big gains gives the<lb />secondary the most important task of the game.<lb /><lb />3. Protect the lead<lb /><lb />Last week against UAB, the Pirates created a big<lb />lead and never surrendered it. If ECU is think-<lb />ing conference title then it must be able to hold<lb />on to a lead again. Without a doubt protecting a<lb />lead will also give the Pirates more confidence<lb />on both sides of the ball as they move forward<lb />towards the end of the season.<lb /><lb />SKIP HOLTZ<lb /><lb /> oWe haven't won anything at this point<lb />and have given ourselves a chance to<lb />play again in round two. This is what<lb />we Call our final four conference tour T<lb />and Memphis is the next opponent. <lb /><lb />st UAB.<lb /><lb />1S<lb />3<lb />ac<lb /><lb />Q<lb />n<lb />2<lb />2<lb /><lb />ECU trying to win fifth straight conference matchup<lb /><lb />JARED JACKSON<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />One down and three to go in the draining four games to end the regular<lb />season, as the Pirates try to clinch the East Division title in C-USA and a berth<lb />in the conference title game.<lb /><lb /> oThis is what we call our ofinal four conference tour, and Memphis is the<lb />next opponent, said ECU head coach Skip Holtz.<lb /><lb />The Pirates [5-4, #-1] will travel to Memphis to play-the-Tigers [4 "4, 3-1]<lb />this weekend in a pivotal C-USA clash set for 2 p.m.<lb /><lb /> T The match-up was considered to be a cake walk three weeks ago when<lb />Memphis was struggling, but the Tigers have reeled off two straight confer-<lb />ence wins, against Rice and Tulane, to improve their record to .500 and have<lb />shot up the East Division standings where they currently sit in a tie for second<lb />place with UCF.<lb /><lb />Now the Pirates are set to enter another emotional contest, and because of a<lb />Southern Miss loss to UCF last week, ECU now controls its own destiny in the<lb />conference race. :<lb /><lb />Win out and it will host the title game in Greenville; lose and the season Ts in<lb />limbo.<lb /><lb /> oWe needed the help to control our own destiny but we always try to go 1-0<lb />each week, said Holtz about the UCF-Southern Miss game Ts ramifications. oPeople<lb />have already started talking about three games from now but we need to make sure<lb />we don Tt fall into that trap. I told the team, Just like last week, that they have until<lb />Tuesday to get this game out of their systems to get ready for Memphis. <lb /><lb />The Pirates were in a similar situation last year as they traveled to Rice, in .<lb /><lb />which they needed a win to clinch the East division title in their final conference<lb />game of the season. After a Chris Johnson touchdown in the third quarter to<lb />give ECU a 17-9 lead, the Owls fought back and eventually won, 18-17.<lb /><lb />Rest assured Pirate nation; Skip Holtz remembers that contest well and is<lb />making sure his team does too.<lb /><lb /> oIt is definitely a teaching tool, Holtz said. oWe were in the same situation<lb />last year that we are in now, controlling our own destiny. Hopefully the players<lb />remember that trip and that feeling after losing the opportunity to play for the<lb />conference championship. :<lb /><lb /> oLast year, we put ourselves in a position to play for the championship and<lb />we stubbed our toe at the last second. Hopefully that taught us to maintain<lb /><lb />our focus this year. If we don Tt take care of business this week then we lose the<lb /><lb />opportunity to play for it again next week. <lb /><lb />The meeting between the Pirates and Tigers will be the 16th between the<lb />two schools. ECU leads 9-6 in the all time series but Memphis has won four of<lb />the last six. ECU won last season 35-20 in Greenville but Memphis won the last<lb />time the two teams met at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, 27-24.<lb /><lb /> oWe know that we have a challenge this week, said Holtz. oMemphis is a<lb />4-4 football team right now and 3-1 in the conference. They have won three of<lb />their last four and are playing well with confidence. <lb /><lb />Holtz knows that his ECU defense will have its hands full this weekend.<lb /><lb /> oOffensively, they [Memphis] are scary because they have three tailbacks that<lb />are playing by committee, Holtz said. oTheir two quarterbacks have completed<lb />over 60 percent of their passes and have thrown 14 touchdowns as compared<lb />to seven interceptions.<lb /><lb /> oAdditionally, their five wide receivers: have caught over 20 passes and are<lb />extremely tall, all the way up to 6-foot-8. <lb /><lb />The Tigers offense could present a problem for the ECU defense come<lb />Saturday because of the things coach Holtz spoke of. Memphis ranks third in<lb />C-USA in pass offense with 280 yards per game and fourth in total offense with<lb />419 yards per game. :<lb /><lb />Senior quarterback Martin Hankins has played well in all six games he has<lb />had action in, throwing for almost 1,500 yards and 10 touchdowns. 6-foot-4<lb />Junior, Maurice Jones has been the Tigers go-to option, amassing almost 500<lb />receiving yards on the season on 26 receptions and two touchdowns. Carlos<lb />Singleton has also been key for the receiving core, as the 6-foot-8 redshirt<lb />sophomore has three touchdowns and 324 receiving yards.<lb /><lb />The turnover differential should have a huge impact in this contest, as the Pirates<lb />and Tigers rank No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in C-USA in turnover margin.<lb /><lb /> oOn the defensive side of the ball, [Memphis] is a stingy group, said Holtz.<lb /> oI think their secondary is extremely active and have a lot of upperclassmen,<lb />especially -at the safety position.<lb /><lb /> oWe will have to be ready for the 4-4 or 4-3 and be really simple in what we<lb />do offensively. They are first in redzone defense, second in scoring defense and<lb />third in passing defense so we need to be ready. It will take one of our better<lb />efforts, especially playing on the road. <lb /><lb />While this will be the third coaching battle between Memphis head coach<lb />Tommy West and Holtz at their respective schools, the two also stood on oppo-<lb />site sidelines while Holtz was an assistant at Florida State and West was the<lb />head coach at Clemson; also when Holtz was an assistant for this father, Lou, at<lb /><lb />see PREVIEW page B5<lb /><lb />Pirates face familiar foe in critical game<lb /><lb />£EU<lb /><lb />1. Win the turnover battle<lb /><lb />ECU and Memphis are the top two teams in C-<lb />USA in turnover margin, so the team that wins<lb />the turnover margin on Saturday is likely to be<lb />victorious. Memphis is very good at stripping<lb />the ball, as it leads C-USA in fumbles recov-<lb />ered with 13. Both teams rarely turn the ball<lb />over so ball security, or lack there of, should<lb />have a huge impact.<lb /><lb />2. Pass the ball effectively<lb /><lb />Memphis has passed for over 300 yards in all<lb />four of its wins this year. Senior quarterback<lb />Martin Hankins has struggled in the Tigers T<lb />losses however. ECU Ts secondary played well<lb />last week, but the jury is still out on the young<lb />group that has been susceptible tothe long pass.<lb /><lb />3. Win the fourth quarter<lb /><lb />Memphis has been outscored in every quarter<lb />this season except the one that usually matters<lb />the most: the fourth. Memphis used a game-<lb />winning drive in the final minutes to beat Tulane<lb />last week and has won all three of its confer-<lb />ence games by a combined seven points. These<lb />two teams have a history of games decided in<lb />the final minutes. Memphis will have to keep<lb />the game close throughout and hope to pull<lb />more late-game heroics in the final quarter.<lb /><lb />TOMMY WEST<lb /><lb />They're [ECU] talented and they<lb />look offensively like a very similar<lb />offense out there. It's amazing<lb />watching it how similar both teams<lb />are from an offensive standpoint. <lb /><lb /></p>

The rugby team has<lb />competed for years at the high-<lb />est collegiate level; rising to be<lb />one of, if not the best team in<lb />the state. :<lb /><lb />Since rugby is not a sanc-<lb />tioned NCAA sport, no uni-<lb />versity can have a varsity team.<lb />Instead, competition is gov-<lb />erned by USA Rugby, which<lb />divides college teams into three<lb />divisions. ECU Ts team currently<lb /><lb />competes in the second division.<lb />However, they have shown the<lb />ability to defeat teams in Divi-<lb />sion I in recent years. Last<lb />spring, the Pirates finished<lb />third in the prestigious Cherry<lb />Blossom Tournament in Wash-<lb />ington, D.C., defeating Division<lb />I teams like Rice, Temple, and<lb />Virginia Tech along the way.<lb /><lb />Building on last years suc-<lb />cess, which also saw the team<lb />win its conference and make it<lb />to the elite eight of the South<lb />Region before losing to national<lb />runner-up Arkansas State, the<lb />team has gotten off to a blazing<lb />start this year. It Ts a healthy<lb />competition and a great thing for<lb />our football team. <lb /><lb />Holtz is hoping that the two-<lb />quarterback system will work<lb />again this week.<lb /><lb /> oThis is not Rob Kass vs. Pat-<lb />rick Pinkney, but East Carolina vs.<lb />Memphis, he said.<lb /><lb />Armed with two quarter-<lb />backs, ECU seeks to go 1-0<lb />again this week in what Holtz<lb />is calling the conference Ts single<lb />elimination tournament. .<lb /><lb />The Pirates are only three<lb />weeks away from making his-<lb />tory, but as they learned last<lb />year, you have to take things<lb />one week at a time.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />THE JAMAICA MUSIC<lb />FESTIVAL FEATURING<lb />ARTISTS SUCH AS:<lb />SHAGGY, BEENIE MAN,<lb /><lb />and much, much more!<lb /><lb />Concert Dates: March 3rd,<lb />1th, 17th &amp; 24th<lb /><lb />Book Your Trip Today!
