I loved being able to pretend to be something<lb />else, but I hated having to walk around and parade<lb />myself in front of large groups of strangers when I<lb />was an awkward little 10 year old. I just remember<lb />being tortured into wearing numerous silly cos-<lb />tumes that included the ever-popular clown, Peter<lb />Pan, a red crayon (complete with pencil-shaped hat)<lb />and an ECU cheerleader.<lb /><lb />I stopped wearing costumes around 10th grade<lb />because I felt ridiculous wearing overbearing out-<lb />fits that. looked somewhat like burlap sacks for my<lb />dad Ts fear of me looking oslutty. ? Oh, how I wish<lb />he could witness the current ECU Halloween<lb />festivities.<lb /><lb />My disdain for Halloween does not stem from<lb />religious beliefs,.and I think I may even be start-<lb />ing to like it. I will never quite understand why<lb />some religious denominations believe that Hal-<lb />loween is the odevil Ts holiday. ? What is so wrong<lb />with kids dressing up as Superman, Spiderman<lb />and M&amp;Ms?<lb /><lb />Once I stopped dressing up, I loved sitting out<lb />on our front porch looking at the adorable kids<lb />in their costumes begging for candy, or as chris-<lb />tianitytoday.com says, oblackmailing neighbors<lb />for candy. ?<lb /><lb />Growing up Lutheran, we celebrated All Saints<lb />Day (Nov. 1) by lighting a candle for every family<lb />member that passed in the name of Christ, but this<lb />never stopped us from behaving odevilishly ? the<lb />night before and passing out into a sugar coma.<lb />Although my lack of understanding as to why a<lb /><lb />mere child Ts game of dress-up is evil to some is due T<lb /><lb />to upbringing, it seems equally evil to deprive kids<lb /><lb />of the opportunity to partake in the memories built:<lb /><lb />by favorite costumes and gross candy.<lb /><lb />In college, our candy reward is the looks that<lb />we receive when we strut around downtown in our<lb />carefully planned outfits. For women, the cleavage<lb />and rear areas are strategically covered, but show<lb />just enough to will a few unfortunates to purchase<lb />us a beverage or two. For the men, I assume Hal-<lb />loween is an expensive evening out, because in<lb />order to meet a totally hot babe, it Ts necessary to<lb />treat them to a drink of sorts and to get into clubs<lb />that are somewhat biased toward females..<lb /><lb />Most people say that Franklin Street in Chapel<lb />Hill is the place to be, but I think that being in<lb />Greenville with good friends is the best Hallow-<lb />een there could ever be. After a good long<lb />heartfelt chat at the ol T library steps, I saw the light<lb />my friends. I have shed my old ways and geek<lb />Jesus Christ into my life!<lb /><lb />It was so simple, that I could not believe I had<lb />not done it sooner. Think about it friends, oifit Ts not<lb />the God of the Holy Bible, the Holy Scripture, T than<lb />you are worshiping a figment of fyour imagination.<lb />You are making something up in your own mind<lb />to suit your own needs.<lb /><lb />There are only two options. There is Heaven<lb />or there is Hell. You either accept Jesus Christ into<lb />your life, the God of the Holy Bible, or you burn<lb />- in a lake of fire. It is black or: white, friends. How<lb />could it not be any clearer!<lb /><lb />Do not think just because you call yourbalf<lb /><lb />a Christian, that you are a Christian. I do not<lb />want any of you bandwagon folks jumping aboard<lb />because Jesus returns in the near future. If you<lb />are a Christian, you follow the Bible to a T. Lose<lb />those nights fornicating and those nights of binge<lb />drinking! You are only digging your hole deeper<lb />with Satan Ts shovel!<lb /><lb />Do not misrepresent my position as judging "<lb /><lb />you, friends, because that is not what I am doing.<lb />I am not judging anyone, only preaching the good<lb />Word. I am preaching what you choose not to see<lb />by closing your eyes and choose not to hear by<lb />closing your ears. Wake up folks! Any tongs and<lb />it will be too late!<lb /><lb />You could learn from these friends of mine that<lb />stand out in front of the library steps. They may<lb />be few and far and in between with their visits, so<lb />keep an EAR out for their powerful and thought-<lb />provoking message. The leaves are<lb />changing, the days are shorter, and you are just<lb />now realizing how cold it Ts going to be in your sexy<lb />pirate outfit. Halloween is ECU Ts claim to fame, and<lb />the witching hour is almost upon us.<lb /><lb />For those of you in your first year of college,<lb />I Tm sure you have heard the rumors, and after three<lb />years of experience, I can attest to their validity.<lb />Thousands of students, non-students and horny<lb />sketch-balls will line the streets downtown to be<lb />a part of the madness. This spectacle is of course<lb />centered around the outfits, and these days there<lb />are no holds barred when it come to costumes. The<lb /><lb />equation when figuring out your outfit is simple. "<lb /><lb />Take a character, imaginary or not, and add one of<lb />two words in front of it, sexy or slutty. Examples<lb />range from ordinary (sexy nurse, sexy firefighter<lb />and sexy cop), to the more extreme (sexy cheer-<lb />leader and the ever-popular slutty...slut). Yes, she<lb /><lb />-is the girl who didn Tt take any character at all,<lb /><lb />who merely combined the sexiest aspects of many<lb />costumes, giving her powers in sexiness unknown<lb />to the mere mortal.<lb /><lb />If there is anyone who is still unsure of how my<lb />equation works, I will give you an example. Say<lb />for instance, witen you were a kid you loved fairies.<lb />So on this holiday it is no coincidence you would<lb />want to act out your love for them by personifying<lb />one. Only one problem: you can Tt just be a regular<lb />fairy; that would be weird. Yes, the modern day<lb />Halloween has been transformed, and anything shy<lb />of an R T rating is unacceptable and Tinkerbelle is<lb />going to need work, because last time I checked<lb />she was still a G. T Now, you ask yourself, How<lb />can I make someone so innocent look sexy? T Well,<lb /><lb />. the answer to this is also very simple: fishnets<lb /><lb />and hooker boots. Yes, fishnets and hooker boots<lb />are all you need to turn an innocent Tinkerbelle,<lb />Strawberry Shortcake or Pocahontas, well, more<lb />Paris Hiltgn.<lb /><lb />If you are a guy reading this, worried about<lb />what Rob Kass will look like dressed up in stock-<lb /><lb /> ings, you can breathe easy. Yes, luckily for us all<lb /><lb />during Halloween Ts transformation from innocent<lb />nights filled with trick-or-treating and senseless<lb />vandalism to its current state of affairs, we males<lb />were not considered. Maybe because no one wants<lb />to see sexy Spidermen and Draculas running<lb />around, or because not even women want to see a<lb />bunch of half-naked drunk guys in heels. What-<lb />ever reason, guys, you can, leave your fishnets in<lb />the drawer.<lb /><lb />Now I am sure there are some of you out there<lb />who are saying that my outlook on Halloween is<lb />skewed. And that not everyone falls into this cookie<lb />cutter equation for costumes. Yeah, I know there<lb />are still some people out there, purists, who see<lb />Halloween for what it is and was; a day to dress<lb />scary and let down your guard about what other<lb />people think. For you those of you out there keeping<lb />tradition alive, I salute you. You all are the ones<lb />keeping Halloween scary and maintaining any hope<lb />for me that when it is time for my daughter to go<lb />out, she can be whatever she wants, and will never<lb />have to see this article, or my equation.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com. ?<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Kimivcry Bellamy Rachel King<lb />News Editor Opinion Editor<lb />Greg Katski Ronnie Woodward<lb />Sports Editor Asst. Other states noticed<lb />the positive effect the program<lb />had in N.C., and the campaign<lb /><lb />spread nationwide.<lb />According to Ser-<lb />geant Phil Worthing-<lb />ton, supervisor of<lb />the Greenville Police<lb />Department Ts traffic<lb />safety unit, seat<lb />belt usage rates<lb />in N.C. have<lb />increased from<lb />58 percent to 88<lb />percent since the<lb />campaign Ts birth.<lb />Although Green-<lb />ville Ts usage rate is among the<lb />statewide percent, local officers<lb />continue to heavily enforce seat<lb />belt law violations.<lb /><lb />According to the Greenville<lb />Police Department Ts citation<lb />reports, Greenville police offi-<lb />cers have issued an average of<lb />2,670 seat belt citations per<lb />year over the past three federal<lb />fiscal years.<lb /><lb />Recently, the Greenville<lb />Police Department has focused<lb />on increasing seat belt use at<lb />night. To do so, light towers<lb />are installed at intersections<lb /><lb />around Greenville so officers<lb /><lb />can observe whether vehicle<lb />occupants are wearing their<lb />seat belts. It doesn Tt prevent all the<lb />injuries, but it is going to keep<lb />you in the car 99% of the time, ?<lb />said Worthington.<lb />Worthington also explained<lb />that being hospitalized with a<lb />severe brain injury costs about<lb />$30,000 a day in intensive care,<lb />then the victim will possibly<lb />have to be treated or institu-<lb />tionalized for the rest of their<lb />life. In the event the victim is<lb />not able to afford their medical<lb />treatment, taxpayers will have<lb />to financially cover a substantial<lb />amount of the medical bills.<lb /><lb />However, some people oppose.<lb /><lb />the government regulating adult<lb />seat belt laws, because not wear-<lb />ing a seat belt endangers only<lb />the individual.<lb /><lb /> oI think it [the policy] is<lb />intruding into our privacy. They grip you<lb />firmly from the first note, only<lb />letting go at the grand end.<lb />Often compared to the vocal<lb />and instrumental sounds of clas-<lb />sics such as Rush and Yes, the<lb /><lb />experience of their music just<lb />continues to get weirder with<lb /><lb />~ each album, perhaps due in part<lb /><lb />to the oconcept albums ? they.<lb />release, revealing a plot only<lb />true fans with good memory can<lb />actually keep up with.<lb />They are still a relatively<lb /><lb />"new band, only officially active<lb /><lb />since 2001, but they have<lb />managed to release four full-<lb />length albums and two live<lb />performance DVDs. Coheed<lb />and Cambria have also toured<lb />numerous times with Vans<lb />Warped Tour and have now<lb />embarked on a fall tour with<lb />Fall of Troy.<lb /><lb />No World for Tomorrow may<lb />just be their most ambitious<lb />work to date, not just with<lb />music, but the marketing of the<lb />album as well. Months before<lb /><lb />~anyone knew a thing about the<lb /><lb />album, the band released five<lb /> oWilling Well ? videos, each<lb />portraying a normal everyday<lb /><lb />_activity; parents playing with<lb /><lb />a baby, kids having a party and<lb />a woman washing the dishes,<lb />only to end with a dark shad-<lb />owy figure appearing, and a<lb />quick cut to the band Ts logo<lb />and release date of the album.<lb />The anticipation of the album<lb /><lb />even caused a commotion at<lb />the University of Kansas after<lb />students spray-painted the<lb />logo and date of release for<lb />the album, causing officials to<lb />worry of a potential shooting.<lb /><lb /> oThe Reaping ? begins the<lb />album strongly, and the epic,<lb />five-part oEnd Complete, ?<lb /><lb /> oreminiscent of the four-part<lb /><lb /> oWilling Well ? finishes out the<lb />album with stride. However,<lb />there are a few duds, namely<lb />the first single oThe Running<lb />Free, ? which does nothing<lb />more than attract lukewarm<lb />fans into buying the album,<lb />only to have them toss it away<lb />because they just don Tt get it.<lb />Also, personal favorites include<lb /> oGravemakers and Gunsling-<lb />ers ? and the entirety of the<lb /> oEnd Complete, ? which boasts<lb />incredible tempo changes and<lb />more importantly, an emo-<lb />tional retorting by Sanchez,<lb />a trait he has been keeping up<lb />with since the beginning of<lb />Coheed and Cambria.<lb /><lb />While some fans may just<lb />see this as another album in<lb />their collection, die-hard fans<lb />perceive this as another grand<lb />chapter in the story of Coheed<lb />and Cambria. Not only does<lb /><lb />Coheed and Cambria release<lb />albums, they release comic<lb />books that tell the story in<lb />the music they play. Their<lb />two first comics, oThe Second:<lb />Stage Turbine Blade 1 and<lb />2 ? is completely out of print,<lb />making it a rare collector Ts<lb />item only for the dedicated fan.<lb />The comic oGood Apollo, I Tm<lb />Burning Star IV, ? that accom-<lb />panies volume one of the Good<lb />Apollo albums is still produced<lb />in bulk, making it available for<lb />almost anyone. However, the<lb />band has begun to orework ? the<lb />series, releasing oThe Amory<lb />Wars Parts 1-3 ? a few months<lb />ago. Each is still available, and<lb />the entire story is told in order,<lb />helping confused fans get back<lb />on track.<lb /><lb />The music, along with the<lb />graphic novels, tells the story of<lb />Coheed and Cambria Kilgannon,<lb />their children Josephine, twins<lb />Matthew and Maria and Clau-<lb />dio, whom the entire series is<lb />focused around - coincidentally,<lb />the same name of lead singer<lb />Claudio Sanchez.<lb /><lb />It tells the story of a family Ts<lb />fight to stay together amongst<lb /><lb />see SERIES page A7<lb /><lb /></p>
