<lb />Opinion |<lb /><lb />Dont waste<lb />our time<lb /><lb />Apathy all too common in the<lb />classroom<lb /><lb />RACHEL KING<lb />OPINION EDITOR<lb /><lb />Have you ever gotten to class, only to find it<lb />more than half empty with two minutes until go<lb />time? T Even after the first quarter of class, people<lb />still manage to straggle in, without so much as the<lb />effort to close the door quietly. Sometimes. you get<lb />those classes with the silent majority "the students<lb />that sit behind their desks through the entire period,<lb />refusing to open their mouths because they haven't<lb />bothered to do their homework. What happened to<lb />being in college because you wanted to learn? Why<lb />waste the time of everyone who wants to get some-<lb />thing out of it?<lb /><lb />First of all, Tm sure some of you will need some<lb />kind of clarification as to what I mean by an apa-<lb />thetic student. T These students are not having a bad<lb />day...unless they Tre counting having to be in class at<lb />all. We all have days where we Td like to be somewhere<lb />else, professors included, I Tm sure. And there are days<lb />when you can Tt avoid being late, and that Ts fine, too.<lb />It Ts called life. T .<lb /><lb />However, these kids act like they Td rather have<lb />to see the dentist for a root canal than be forced to<lb />listen to an hour (not even! 50 measly minutes...an<lb />hour fifteen, tops...I do pity the three-hour warriors,<lb />though...three hours is always too much). Why is it<lb />so hard for you all to be timely and to at least feign<lb />interest for the people who bust their butts to make<lb />sure you take away the information you need to be<lb />successful?<lb /><lb />Some of you may say, Well, that argument Ts<lb />flawed. I'll never need Algebra I again...nor basic<lb />Biology. And I don Tt care what Shakespeare said. I can<lb />speak English just fine and I saw 10 Things I Hate<lb />About You. My bases are covered. T But are they?<lb /><lb />At least a dozen times during the semester, I Tll<lb />leave a class and overhear a student remarking on<lb />how pointless the class is, or how they aren Tt learning<lb />anything, or how dumb the professor is. Well, I have<lb />two ideas for you on how to improve your less-than-<lb />desirable situation: drop the class or (if you have to<lb />have it), make sure you state your concerns on those<lb />annoying little bubble sheets we get at the end of every<lb />semester asking us to rate the class and the professor.<lb />Those little sheets that so many of us like to bubble<lb />in straight nines in a one-through-ten lineup on are<lb />one way to remedy future students T same grievances.<lb />Bottom line here: do your part, get out, or shut up.<lb /><lb />Some students seem to be forgetting the basic<lb />tenant of student-professor relationship.<lb /><lb />It Ts called respect.<lb /><lb />I cannot express the frustration I feel when I<lb />am sitting in class, ready to roll, and the professor<lb />asks a basic reading comprehension question from<lb />last night Ts homework...and no one answers because<lb />either they didn Tt do their homework or can Tt be<lb />bothered. In far too many of my classes, people are<lb />freezing up and hiding behind their bank-breaking<lb />textbooks. You paid all that money for them; why<lb />don Tt you use them?<lb /><lb />And yes, I do answer the professor when a ques-<lb />tion is posed to the class and no one else will speak<lb />up. I Tm a bit of an overachiever, it Ts true, but I don Tt go<lb />out of my way every night to make sure I have witty<lb />things to say, or go any farther than anyone goes<lb />who Ts conscious of his or her academic success. It Ts one<lb />thing to be shy, and quite another to just not care. I Td<lb />venture to say that most professors aren't asking you<lb />to perform brain surgery, so what Ts the problem?<lb /><lb />How would you feel if you tried for over half an<lb />hour to start a meaningful discussion just to have it<lb />die on you because two of the 23 (out of 30 "the other<lb />five are asleep, and one is actively snoring) students<lb />in your class won't have anything to do with you?<lb />And you can forget about calling students like that<lb />out on something basic like consistently coming to<lb />class unprepared. They roll your eyes at you. They<lb />whisper base insults to each other behind their palms<lb />openly. They let their phones ring in class and act<lb />like it Ts no big deal. In some of the larger lecture ses-<lb />sions, you may even find someone on his or her cell,<lb />discussing the previous night Ts drunken excursions<lb />with someone else in another classroom. This kind<lb />of overt, disparaging, and yes "crappy "disrespect<lb />is far too prevalent for my tastes.<lb /><lb />It Ts not that these people aren't intelligent; I think<lb />most of them are. Their interests just don Tt lie in the<lb />daily classroom grind. I also recognize that for many<lb />of us, especially when it comes to the general educa-<lb />tion requirements of an ECU degree, these classes<lb />are just stepping stones to the next exciting thing<lb />we'll do in life.<lb /><lb />I ask everyone to take a second look at your<lb />classroom conduct. Is it respectful? Would it kill<lb />you to silence your phone before it goes off? Could<lb />you manage to stay awake for the class period? If you<lb />can Tt, why don Tt you leave? Can you imagine how you<lb />make your professors feel? And, seriously, professors,<lb />it Ts your responsibility to not to tolerate that kind of<lb />thing. You've paid your dues; you deserve to have an<lb />active, alert, prepared classroom environment that Ts<lb />engaging and inspiring. No, it won't be that way every<lb />day; because this is not a perfect world, but I think<lb />there Ts plenty of room for improvement.<lb /><lb />So please, I love you for reading our Pirate Rants,<lb />but put the newspaper down. I ended up purchasing a<lb />Mac and J fell in love with it because it made life<lb />so much easier (well that Ts a little exaggeration),<lb />but the computer was a well-worth-it purchase.<lb /><lb />There are many reasons to like a Mac better<lb />than a PC, because, simply, the computer just<lb />works well. Even software such as Microsoft<lb />Office is compatible with your. Mac that was<lb />found on your old PC. Not only can you find your<lb />necessary applications, you have lots of oamazing<lb />stuff ? such as iPhoto, iTunes, and iMovie. These<lb />applications allow you to create, modify, or edit<lb />photos and movies, along with a library of music<lb />and iTunes store to purchase additional music,<lb />DVDs, and more. Not only does the Mac provide<lb />amazing software and applications, the laptop and<lb />desktop is no computer you would be ashamed<lb /><lb />of with its high style and flair. Mac laptops are ©<lb /><lb />more on the classy and cute side, with a color<lb /><lb />choice of black or white, rather than the bulky,<lb />boring, PC laptop. The slim style makes it easy to<lb />carry around with you to class and provide less<lb />of a hassle. If you are not looking for a laptop, the<lb />desktops are even more convenient with one big<lb />screen and no ugly tower. Also with extremely<lb />crisp and clear color and graphics, you cannot go<lb />wrong with purchasing a Mac that fits your style.<lb /><lb />Now I am no computer expert or anything,<lb />but I Tve always had bad experiences with PCs.<lb /><lb />My computers back in the day crashed one<lb />after another because viruses would continually<lb />attack it, even if I did have Norton Anti-Virus<lb />software, that I constantly updated and paid for<lb />regularly. My PC would always be extremely slow<lb />and freeze, leaving me to restart the computer,<lb />and even losing that paper I just spent three hours<lb />working on. Another downfall of the PC is that<lb />other companies constantly rebuild software and<lb />update operating systems, providing continuous<lb />change and confusion to the users. Who wants a<lb />computer continuously crashing, changing, and<lb />failing to perform properly? [Editor Ts note: Mac<lb />has a reputation for building upon its previous<lb />OS where, say, Windows, for instance, reinvents<lb />itself, as is the case with Vista, its most recent<lb />OS, which met with a considerable amount of<lb />controversy due to bugs T in the system and<lb />kinks that needed to be worked out after release]<lb /><lb />From my personal experience, Mac has the<lb />better performance and reliability out of the<lb />two choices. As we all know, on paper,<lb />ECU should have had that game, but unfortunately<lb />reality played a better show for State fans. I will<lb />admit I was just plain pissed come oNo Quarter, ?<lb />but contrary State Fans were very pleased. Earlier<lb />in the game my friends and I were screaming and<lb />very amped for a Pirate victory. After first quar-<lb />ter I needed some Dippin T Dots and so I went to<lb />quench this hunger. While walking back up to row<lb />XX, I saw two guys getting led away by police. I<lb />knew what must have happened but since they were<lb />dressed as frats, I couldn Tt tell who they were for<lb />or against. This was true until I saw two friends<lb />of mine getting led by the Police.<lb /><lb />As it turns out, while I was gone, the two State<lb />fans began talking a lot of garbage to some Pirate<lb />girls seated behind us. A friend of mine had enough<lb />and so the bickering began. A cop came and took<lb />away the two state fans and later my two friends,<lb />one of which wasn Tt really involved. After taking<lb />them away, they were kicked out of the game. Now,<lb />those who went to get these tickets know how hard<lb />it was to get them. I personally waited four hours<lb />for them and so did one of my friends who got<lb />kicked out AND there wasn Tt even a fight!<lb /><lb />When I went to the UNC-ECU game, a<lb />drunken UNC fan was going up and down the<lb />aisles bothering everyone with his loud mouth--<lb />until a much bigger ECU fan got into his face and<lb />punched it. This in turn led to the police taking<lb />both of them away. We didn Tt see them agaily but I<lb />would bet the UNC fan would have shut up the rest<lb />of the game if the cops hadn't shown up.<lb /><lb />So what, I say. If you are going to run your<lb />mouth at a football game, a hockey game, baseball<lb />game, etc. then you better be ready to either shut up<lb />or fight because this is the sporting world we live<lb />in. mean America is almost a little girl in compari-<lb />son to what some soccer hooligans do in Europe or<lb />South America. In Moscow they stationed 6,000<lb />cops to prevent a riot when Britain came to play<lb />and in Argentina two fans were killed, one shot<lb />and the other stabbed. In retrospect who cares if<lb />two State Fans got knocked in a little. I doubt it<lb />would have led to the entire stadium erupting into<lb />rioting chaos.<lb /><lb />I am not pleading for no police or some kind of<lb />sports fighting arena I am just simply saying this<lb />Zero Tolerance rule seems to go a little far. If there<lb />isn Tt even a fight, why kick someone out of a game?<lb />If there is a fight then break it up, but are arrests<lb />and possible criminal charges always necessary? I<lb />don Tt think so. I say live and let be, but to the guy ©<lb />who punches my team Ts enemy fan, oh well.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Bre. <lb />DID YOU<lb /><lb />- _ Skip Holtz has never lost back-<lb />to-back home games as head coach<lb />at ECU. The last time the Pirates lost<lb />back-to-back home games was when<lb />they lost their first two home games<lb />of the 2004 season to Wake Forest<lb />and Cincinnati, respectively. Holtz re-<lb />placed John Thompson after the 2004<lb />season and will try to avoid breaking<lb />this streak this weekend as ECU lost<lb />at home to rival N.C. State last Satur-<lb />day.<lb /><lb />- UAB head coach Neil Callaway<lb />coached at ECU at one time. UAB Ts first-year head<lb />coach also coached the offensive line<lb />at Auburn, under Dye, from 1981-<lb />1992.<lb /><lb />- _ECUrunning back Chris Johnson<lb />has recorded at least 100 all-purpose<lb />yards in every game this season<lb />except for one. After only recording<lb /><lb />53 all-purpose yards in the Pirates<lb />season-opener against Virginia Tech,<lb />Johnson has eclipsed the 10-yard<lb />mark in seven straight games. However, much like N.C. State last week, Holtz<lb />warns that his team faces an opponent that has a solid team whose<lb />record simply overtook it.<lb /><lb /> oYou can fall into a similar trap with UAB that you did with N.C. State, ?<lb />warned Holtz.<lb /><lb /> oWe said that'N.C. State had a 1-5 record, but had played some very talented teams.<lb />The same goes for UAB. When you look in conference, they have lost to Tulsa and<lb />Houston and out of conference to Michigan State, Florida State and Mississippi State.<lb />You can take the statistics and records and throw them out of the window. ?<lb /><lb />UAB ranks dead last in C-USA in scoring offense, averaging around 20 points a<lb />game, as well as total offense, averaging about 313 yards a game and rushing defense,<lb />giving up about 241 yards.on the ground per game.<lb /><lb />First-year UAB head coach Neil Callaway, who came to UAB after a long stint as<lb />offensive Coordinator at Georgia, used to be a part-time assistant at ECU under Pat<lb />Dye and helped the Pirates to a 9-3 mark and Independence Bowl victory in 1978.<lb /><lb /> oTt will be a game that will be a tremendous challenge for us, ? said Callaway. oI'm<lb />very impressed with what Skip Holtz has done up there, getting that program rejuve-<lb />nated and going in the right direction. ?<lb /><lb />Holtz gives Callaway and UAB nothing but credit regardless of its record.<lb /><lb /> oI think Coach Callaway has done a great job as he has just started. They have a<lb />very scrappy team and they play extremely hard, ? Holtz said of the Blazers.<lb /><lb />After the emotional loss to the Wolfpack, Holtz wanted to come into the week<lb /><lb />offat 3:30 p.m. Saturday<lb /><lb />of preparation for UAB just continuing to play Pirate football.<lb /><lb /> oJ think the main concern coming into this week is us, ? he said. oWe need to focus<lb />more on what we do and not get concerned with who we are playing. Make whoever it<lb />is earn what they get and let Ts worry about our execution. We have to put a better step<lb />forward. ?<lb /><lb />For the three weeks prior to the N.C. State game, the Pirates T offense was on fire.<lb />But after the frustrating loss on Satuday, redshirt sophomore quarterback Rob Kass says<lb />his offense will do whatever it takes to pick up a win this weekend.<lb /><lb /> oWe definitely have a talented group of tailbacks, T said Kass, who was 28-of-50<lb />against the Wolfpack for 254 yards and one touchdown. oWe're going to do a good job<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />of pounding it; running it right at them. I think that will open up the play action<lb />pass and if we have to sit back there and pass then we willdo ge _ that too. ?<lb /><lb /> Kassalso knows the key to pulling out... £ the win against<lb />the Blaz- ers on Saturday will be not _{ turning the ball<lb /><lb />over 4 \ toateam that Ts looking to ruin the Pirates<lb />con- 7 ference chances.<lb /> oWe can't turn the ball over. It came down to the last<lb />play so were going to come in with a fire in our<lb /><lb />stomach and ready to play. ?<lb /><lb />Even with last week Ts loss exposing a lot of<lb />weaknesses on the offensive side of ball for the<lb />Pirates, ECU should win the matchup over a weak<lb />UAB defense that is giving up over 32 points and<lb />480 yards per game. With that said, the offensive<lb />line for the Pirates cannot have a repeat performance<lb />from last Saturday and give up multiple sacks or the<lb />game will swing in favor of the Blazers.<lb />While most Pirate fans think that the defense will<lb />get a little bit of a break from the stiff competition that<lb />ECU has played as of late, this is far from the truth.<lb /><lb />see PREVIEW page B8<lb /><lb />Photo by Aileen Devlin<lb /><lb /> oThey [UAB] have a very scrappy team<lb />and they play extremely hard. They are<lb />playing with freshmen wide receivers that<lb />are big and fast as well as a predominantly<lb /><lb />freshmen defensive front. Their strength<lb />is in their secondary and they are doing a<lb />nice job on the back end against the pass. ?<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts been a long time since I Tve been to<lb />Greenville but | know they've done a lot<lb />of good things from a facility standpoint<lb />and with their fan base. After making the switch<lb />to receiver in spring drills, Harris<lb /><lb />has emerged as one of the Pirates T -<lb /><lb />most valuable weapons.<lb /><lb />The Stone Mountain, Ga.<lb />native has 14 catches on the season<lb />for two touchdowns.<lb /><lb />While Harris has become a<lb />solid receiver, it is his versatility<lb />that makes him so dangerous. His<lb />passing skills allow ECU to have<lb />two quarterbacks on the field at<lb />once, something that proved to be<lb />convenient in a shootout against<lb />UTEP. Harris connected with<lb />wide receiver Jamar Bryant for 80<lb />yards on a reverse pass play.<lb /><lb /> oT smiled when coach called it, ?<lb />Harris said of the play. oIt was just<lb />a great play call. Jamar [Bryant]<lb />made a great catch and made two<lb />defenders miss to get in the end<lb />zone for me. ?<lb /><lb />Harris displayed more of his<lb />athleticism against the Miners,<lb />exploding for a 57-yard sprint<lb />down the sideline for a rushing<lb />touchdown.<lb /><lb />But just because he is listed<lb /><lb />as a receiver does not mean his.<lb /><lb />quarterback days are over. Harris<lb />is occasionally inserted under<lb />center, typically to run quarterback<lb />keepers.<lb /><lb /> oWe thought Dwayne [Harris]<lb />was a good quarterback, ? said wide<lb />receivers coach Donnie Kirkpat-<lb />rick, who cited Harris T modest<lb />6-foot stature as cause for the<lb />position switch, oBut we thought<lb />he might have been the best player<lb />on tapeas far as playmaking ability<lb />that we had evaluated in the two<lb />years we've been here. ?<lb /><lb />According to Kirkpatrick,<lb />the confusion about where to play<lb />Harris began while he was still in<lb />high school.<lb /><lb /> oAs a receiver coach I said, I<lb />know he can play receiver, ? said<lb /><lb />couldn't do that he could probably<lb />play defensive back. The running<lb />backs coach thought he could<lb />probably be a running back if he<lb />got a little bit bigger. We thought,<lb /> oThere Ts no way he ain Tt going to<lb />be something. ?<lb /><lb />When Harris isn Tt busy catch-<lb />ing, running or throwing he also<lb />manages to find time returning<lb />punts and kicks. He took over the<lb />punt return duties in the second<lb />game of the season against UNC.<lb /><lb />Quarterback Rob Kass<lb />expected Harris to make a smooth<lb />transition from scout team to the<lb />active roster.<lb /><lb /> oWe had a lot of confidence<lb />in him, ? said Kass. oObviously as<lb />a redshirt player we saw what he<lb />could do out here in practice every<lb />day and now everybody else in the<lb />country is getting an<lb />opportunity to<lb />see what he can<lb />do now that he Ts<lb />out on the field<lb />on Saturday. ?<lb /><lb />Harris<lb />caught the<lb />attention<lb />of several<lb />big name<lb />schools<lb />including<lb />Boston<lb />College<lb />and UNC<lb />while lead-<lb />ing Tucker<lb />High School to<lb />a 10-1 record in<lb />2005, with his<lb />team ranking<lb />as high as No. 3<lb />in the Associated<lb />Press Georgia prep<lb />rankings. Harris was<lb />later named MVP of<lb />the North-South All-Star<lb />Game in a state stocked with<lb />football talent.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Quarterback was the only |<lb /><lb />position Harris had ever known in<lb />Georgia and ECU wasn't exactly<lb />on his radar.<lb /><lb />Harris had aspirations of play-<lb />ing for Maryland before the Terra-<lb />pins opted for another quarterback<lb />and ECU running backs coach<lb />Junior Smith stepped in.<lb /><lb /> oT considered going to Mary-<lb />land because I had family up<lb />there, ? said Harris. oAnd then<lb />Coach [Ralph] Friedgen called<lb />me one night and said they took<lb />a quarterback. ..I started looking<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />ECU's not-so-secret weapon<lb /><lb />the picture late.<lb /><lb /> oCoach Smith stayed with me,<lb />kept calling me and told me he<lb />was going to stick with me the<lb />whole time. ?<lb /><lb />Making the decision to<lb />attend ECU did not come as a<lb />no-brainer to Dwayne, despite<lb />all of the high profile schools<lb />abandoning him. Harris was<lb />not exactly familiar with the<lb />Pirate Nation.<lb /><lb /> oT didn Tt know anything<lb />about it [ECU] until Coach<lb />Smith called me, ? Harris said. oI<lb />did research on it [ECU] and<lb />everything; I knew a lot of great<lb />quarterbacks like Jeff Blake and<lb />[David] Garrard came out of<lb />here. ?<lb /><lb />The surfacing of Harris as<lb />such an impact player has been<lb />crucial to a relatively inexperi-<lb />enced receiving corps. The loss of<lb />two key seniors, Aundrae Allison<lb />and Bobby Good, from last year Ts<lb />squad left ECU without a ogo-to ?<lb />receiver this year.<lb /><lb /> oThe thing about it is, he<lb />really hasn't played a lot of ball,<lb /><lb />so I think he Ts going to be a<lb />; heck of a lot better than<lb />he is right now, ? said<lb />Kirkpatrick. oI<lb />don Tt think he<lb />really under-<lb /><lb />stands the<lb /><lb />impact that<lb />he Ts making<lb />right now.<lb /><lb /> oAs he starts<lb />to get older and<lb />starts think-<lb />ing about how<lb />great he can<lb />be, starts<lb /><lb />pushing<lb />himself<lb />harder<lb />in practice,<lb />starts thinking about his<lb />future and maybe how<lb />many championships<lb />we can win here...he Ts<lb />going to be even more com-<lb />mitted and I think even better. ?<lb /><lb />Whether he Ts lining up at<lb />wide receiver, sneaking in to play<lb />a down at quarterback or contrib-<lb />uting on special teams, one thing<lb />is for certain: classifying Harris<lb />isn Tt important, Just get him on<lb />the field.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarlinian.com<lb /><lb />THURSDAY OCTOBER 25, 2007<lb /><lb />FLU SEASON IS APPROCHING!<lb /><lb /> oGet your FLU SHOT<lb />from a place that<lb />specializes in you. ?<lb /><lb />PREVENTION IS THE KEY<lb /><lb />fa Greenville<lb /><lb /> i;, WALK-INS ARE<lb />eeE ALWAYS WELCOME!<lb /><lb />Hablamos tu idioma.<lb /><lb />FAMILY PRACTICE SERVICES<lb /><lb />» Treatment of acute & chronic pain<lb />« Cardiology<lb /><lb />* Endocrinology<lb /><lb />* Gastroenterology<lb />« Geriatric medicine \ ¢<lb />* Treatment of infectious diseases<lb /><lb />= Neurology<lb /><lb />« Nephrology<lb /><lb />® Rheumatology lnm ie ne<lb /><lb />Denise Turnage<lb />"MSN, FNP-BC<lb /><lb />ene?"? With a<lb />receiving threat such as redshirt<lb />freshman Frantrell Forrest, who<lb />has four touchdowns, and backup<lb />quarterback turned receiver<lb />Joseph Webb, the UAB offense<lb />is not to be taken lightly.<lb /><lb />Junior defensive tackle Khalif<lb />Mitchell knows this and believes<lb />the Pirates will be ok if they just<lb />take it one game at a time.<lb /><lb /> oWe have to come out witha<lb />lot of focus, ? said Mitchell. oIt Ts<lb />like a one game championship<lb />now. We're at the top but we have<lb />to beat everybody. We just need<lb />to win every game...because if<lb />we lose one then we will have to<lb />lean on other people.<lb /><lb /> oTm glad it was the [N.C]<lb />State game to get a wake up<lb />call as opposed to a conference<lb />loss. It hurts to lose to [N.C.]<lb />State around here but we can<lb />accomplish bigger goals than<lb />just beating [N.C] State. We had<lb />State Championship goals, but<lb />that didn Tt have anything to do<lb />with a bowl game or a conference<lb />championship. ?<lb /><lb />If the focus is there on Sat-<lb />urday then the Pirates should be<lb />able to start 1-0 in phase three of<lb />the regular season, and Mitchell<lb />believes that they are on the<lb />cusp of accomplishing something<lb />special.<lb /><lb /> oI know a lot of guys are<lb />tired. We're tired as hell, but at<lb />the same time we are right there, ?<lb /><lb />. said Mitchell. oYou are either<lb /><lb />going to break or youre going to<lb />go. I think we're going to go. ?<lb /><lb />After being knocked back<lb />down to earth last week against<lb />N.C. State, the Pirates have<lb />seemingly gained some of their<lb />swagger back and are ready to<lb />march on.<lb /><lb />Perhaps to a conference<lb />title.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinan.com<lb /><lb />Retro & vintage clothing,<lb />jewelry, antiques,<lb />collectibles, and more.<lb /><lb />1.752.1750<lb />Buy ¢ Sell ¢ Trade<lb /><lb />JAMAICA SPRING<lb />: BREAK on<lb /><lb />THE JAMAICA MUSIC<lb />FESTIVAL FEATURING<lb />ARTISTS SUCH AS:<lb />SHAGGY, BEENIE MAN,<lb />and much, much morel<lb /> oamin<lb /><lb />Book Your Trip Today!
