<lb />PAGE A6<lb /><lb />breast cancer<lb /><lb />awareness guide<lb /><lb />Since the advent of the pink ribbon, health experts have been working<lb />hard to educate women about breast cancer. While we Tve come a long way,<lb />continuing to spread the right information is crucial. We asked top experts to<lb />dispel common myths and misinformation and clarify how women can protect<lb /><lb />themselves now.<lb /><lb />A BETTER WAY<lb />TO EXAMINE YOUR BREASTS<lb /><lb />For years women have been told to check their breasts for lumps<lb />by using a circular motion. But more and more doctors are now rec-<lb />ommending a different technique known as the vertical strips method.<lb /> oIt provides more.thorough coverage of the breast, including under<lb />the arm, ? says Debbie Saslow, Ph.D., director of breast and gyneco-<lb />logic cancers at the American Cancer Society, which now recom-<lb />mends this method for women who do breast self exams. And accord-<lb />ing to Harvard researchers, the technique has a better track record of<lb />detecting smaller lumps than the circular exam.<lb /><lb />@ Imagine a grid drawn horizontally from your armpit to your<lb />breastbone, and vertically from your collarbone to just under<lb />your breast.<lb /><lb />@ Using the pads " not the tips " of your three middle fingers,<lb />move in tiny circles and apply varying degrees of pressure, starting<lb />under the armpit. Move your fingers down to the next square and repeat. .<lb />Continue these vertical strips until you Tve covered the entire grid.<lb /><lb />@ A thorough exam of both breasts should take at least 10<lb />minutes. At your next checkup,.ask your doc-<lb />tor to review the vertical strips technique<lb /><lb />to find out abot<lb /><lb />WHAT REALLY AFFECTS<lb />YOUR CANCER RISK<lb /><lb />Myths and misinformation are rampant<lb />when it comes to risk factors and causes of<lb />breast cancer. Here Ts what you need to be<lb />concerned about and what you don Tt.<lb /><lb />Is it true that ...<lb /><lb />© Wearing antiperspirants and underwire<lb />bras can lead to breast cancer?<lb /><lb />No. Several studies have found no link<lb />between these products and breast cancer<lb />tisk, says Dr. Victoria Seewaldt, director of<lb /><lb />myths of th<lb /><lb /> " Womansday.com<lb /><lb />gained 21 to 30 pounds after age 18 had a 40<lb />percent higher risk, compared with women who<lb />kept their weight within 5 pounds.<lb /><lb />If you do see the number on the scale creep up,<lb />bringing it down can be protective: Data from the<lb />ongoing Nurses T Health study found that women<lb />who shed 22 pounds after menopause reduced their<lb />risk by 57 percent.<lb /><lb />WHAT WOMEN KNOW<lb />ABOUT BREAST CANCER<lb /><lb />Woman Ts Day and National Women Ts Health<lb />Resource Center Survey surveyed more than 8,000<lb />women to find out what they know " and don Tt<lb />know " about breast cancer.<lb /><lb />Risk factors<lb /><lb />@ The majority of women who responded knew that having a fam-<lb />ily member with the disease raises your risk.<lb /><lb />@ Nine out of 10 women knew that<lb />you Tre stil] at risk even if you don Tt have a<lb />family history of breast cancer.<lb /><lb />@ Forty-seven percent of women didn Tt<lb />know that getting older raises your risk for<lb /><lb />: ® | pcan gh developing the disea<lb />: aL. | ping the disease.<lb />th e Fig ks eng © Only 32 percent of women surveyed<lb /><lb />thought that being overweight puts them at<lb />risk, but research shows that it does.<lb /><lb />Mammograms<lb /><lb />@ The good news: 91 percent of women<lb />who are 40 and older have had a mammo-<lb /><lb />d i sease an ?,? san tos neatly as of women are<lb /><lb />@ A study showed that rates at which<lb />women are getting mammograms have.<lb /><lb />the breast cancer prevention program at Duke | ee d eo<lb />Berea a 4 : gone down. If a close relative is<lb />diagnosed with the disease (including on your father Ts side), you<lb />have a family history. Carrying a mutation in one of the. so-called<lb />breast cancer genes BRCA I or Ill indicates a genetic predisposition,<lb />which raises your lifetime risk of developing the disease 40 to 80<lb />percent, Isaacs explains. That may sound high, but it still doesn Tt<lb />mean you will definitely get breast cancer, Isaacs says. oThere are<lb />many lifestyle factors that come into play, including whether you ~<lb />exercise and are at a healthy weight, that can mitigate your risk, ? she<lb />says,<lb /><lb />Plus, if you have a BRCA I or II mutation, you can take measures<lb />to lower your odds. For example, removing the ovaries before<lb />menopause reduces breast cancer risk by 50 percent. That Ts why it Ts<lb />important to discuss your family history " and your options " with<lb />your doctor.<lb /><lb />@ Having more than one drink daily increases your risk?<lb /><lb />Yes. Women who have two to five drinks daily increase their<lb />breast cancer risk 50 percent compared to those who abstain from<lb />alcohol, according to the American Cancer Society. The theory is that<lb />the way alcohol is metabolized leads to higher estrogen levels in the<lb />bloodstream, which ups your odds of developing the disease.<lb /> oWomen should have less than a drink a day, ? Seewaldt says. One<lb />drink is a 10-ounce beer, a 4-ounce glass.of wine or one shot of hard<lb />liquor.<lb /><lb />@ Being overweight is a risk factor?<lb /><lb />Yes. oOverweight or obese women do have an increased risk for<lb />developing breast cancer in their postmenopausal years, ? says Dr.<lb />Anne McTiernan, director of the-prevention center at the Fred<lb />Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. oWe think it Ts because<lb />these women have high levels of estrogens, testosterone and inflam-<lb />matory markers such as C-reactive protein and insulin " all of which<lb />can cause breast cells to grow excessively. ?<lb /><lb />THE NO. 1 HABIT<lb />THAT LOWERS YOUR RISK<lb /><lb />Exercise. oWe think that physical activity reduces your risk by<lb />lowering levels of estrogen and other hormones, in large part by<lb />reducing body fat, ? McTiernan says. You don Tt have to sweat it out<lb />for hours on end to reap the benefit: A landmark study involving<lb />more than 74,000 women found that those who walked briskly for an<lb />hour and a half to two and a half hours weekly cut their risk of breast<lb />cancer by 18 percent.<lb /><lb />Staying active can also help you maintain a healthy weight, which<lb />lowers your risk of the disease. One study found that women who<lb /><lb />Sophisticated li<lb /><lb />said they didn Tt think they needed one yet.<lb /><lb />Wrong! Getting a mammogram annually<lb />starting at age 40 is the best way to catch the disease in its earliest,<lb />most treatable stage.<lb /><lb />HOW TO HELP OUT A FRIEND<lb /><lb />It Ts-hard to know what to do when someone you know is hit with a<lb />breast cancer diagnosis. Remember that your friend is in a whirlwind<lb />and may not know yet how you can help, or she might be<lb />uncomfortable asking. Instead of saying, oLet me know<lb />if you need anything ? or asking oWhat can I do? ? here<lb />are a few things you can do that will definitely be of<lb />help:<lb /><lb />@ Hire a cleaning service for your friend, or come over<lb />and do chores yourself. While it Ts never fun, housekeeping<lb />becomes a huge burden when you're exhausted from.chemo.<lb /><lb />@ If she Ts a close friend, offer to serve as her infor-<lb />mation distribution contact. She may grow tired of<lb />explaining her diagnosis and progress repeatedly, and<lb />it can be overwhelming coming out of surgery and<lb />treatment while simultaneously keeping family and<lb />friends updated. If you offer to send out group e-<lb />mails and answer questions post-first surgery or<lb />chemo, friends will quickly learn to look to<lb />you, rather than her, for information, thereby<lb />taking a burden off of her.<lb /><lb />@ Offer to go for walks or exercise with<lb />her. Some light exercise is often recom-<lb />mended during chemo. Don Tt push it,<lb />but she may enjoy the company on<lb />days when she Ts up to it.<lb /><lb />© Avoid giving heavily scented<lb />bath or beauty products. Not only<lb />can scents be nauseating during<lb />chemo, using a favorite scent<lb />can forever ruin the smell for<lb />her, instantly recalling the<lb />nausea of chemo whenever<lb />she catches a whiff!<lb /><lb />@ When you come to visit,<lb />bring food, but make it bland.<lb /><lb />Treating her to her favorites<lb /><lb />seems like a great idea, but the nausea and negative associations<lb />apply here, too. If you do bring food, make it something that Ts easy to<lb />clean up.<lb /><lb />@ Baby-sit or take her kids for a day.<lb /><lb />@ Offer to drive and/or accompany her to and from chemo treat-<lb />ment and doctor Ts appointments. (AP) "<lb />Smithfield Foods Inc. filed a civil<lb />racketeering lawsuit Wednesday<lb />against the United Food and Com-<lb />merical Workers union, which for<lb />more than a decade has waged an<lb />outspoken campaign to organize<lb />workers at the company Ts massive<lb />hog slaughterhouse in rural North<lb />Carolina.<lb /><lb />The lawsuit, filed in federal<lb />court in Richmond, Va., accuses the<lb />union of engaging in a public smear<lb /><lb />campaign that included seeking<lb /><lb />frivolous regulatory investigations<lb />and providing false statement to<lb />analysts aimed at depressing the<lb />company Ts stock price.<lb /><lb />The union, Smithfield said in<lb />the lawsuit, conspired to force the<lb />company to recognize it as the<lb /> oexclusive bargaining representa-<lb />tives ofhourly employees ... regard-<lb />less of the degree of actual employee<lb />support for such representation, by<lb />injuring Smithfield economically<lb />until Smithfield either agreed to<lb />defendant Ts demands or was run<lb />out of business. ? .<lb /><lb />The lawsuit was filed two days<lb />after the Smithfield, Va.-based<lb /><lb />company called off talks aimed.<lb /><lb />at holding an organizing election<lb />at the plant, which the union has<lb />tried to organize since it opened in<lb />1992. Mike Easley Ts<lb />call to increase their efforts to<lb />conserve water in the face of a<lb />lasting drought that has reduced<lb />the state Ts sparkling reservoirs to<lb />muddy puddles.<lb /><lb /> oWe are getting tremendous<lb />cooperation, ? Easley said. oPeople<lb />are doing what we are asking them<lb />to do. We are going to have to ask<lb />them to do a little bit more, and I<lb />think they expect that. ?<lb /><lb />Easley met Wednesday with<lb />officials from the Department of<lb />Crime Control and Public Safety,<lb />including the National Guard, and<lb />the Department of Environment<lb />and Natural Resources, to discuss<lb />the state Ts plans for water conserva-<lb />tion and ensure local communities<lb />are cooperating with their public<lb />water systems.<lb /><lb />Earlier this week, Easley<lb />stopped short ofimposing statewide<lb />water rationing, but asked people to<lb />stop watering lawns and washing<lb />cars, to turn off the water when<lb />shaving or brushing their teeth,<lb /><lb />- and shut off water fountains and<lb /><lb />other ornamental devices. He also<lb />told the state Ts local governments<lb />to improve their water conserva-<lb />tion efforts.<lb /><lb /> oT think they now understand<lb />that we very well could be into<lb />water rationing if we do not start<lb />cutting back, ? Easley said.<lb /><lb />Since Easley Ts request, several of<lb />the state's largest cities " Raleigh,<lb />Durham and Cary. among them<lb /> " have responded by enacting<lb />tighter restrictions on outdoor<lb />water use. In Greensboro, officials<lb />said anyone caught using a lawn<lb />sprinkler or mister on grass will be<lb />fined $100 without a warning.<lb /><lb />In Cary, the new ban on lawn<lb />sprinklers won't begin until Nov.<lb />1, even though the town is already<lb />drawing water from its lowest<lb />intake pipe in Jordan Lake, which<lb />is about six feet below normal.<lb /> Town spokeswoman Susan Moran<lb />said Cary has had a conservation<lb />program for a decade and the delay<lb />allows the town to honor some<lb />existing excess use permits.<lb /><lb /> oIf people know what to do,<lb />they'll do the right thing, T Moran<lb />said. oThat's the way they are in<lb />Cary. ?<lb /><lb />Greensboro Ts water supply has<lb />fallen to half its normal level, even<lb />though the city has spent more<lb />than $3 million buying water from<lb />neighbors with surpluses. The city<lb /><lb /> has about 4 billion gallons in three<lb /><lb />reservoirs that could last up to 150<lb />days at the current level of water<lb />usage, said Allan Williams, the<lb />city Ts director of water resources.<lb /> oI think everybody ought to<lb />be interrupting their most basic<lb />routines at this point, ? he said. oTfit Ts<lb />a 15-minute shower, it shouldn't be<lb />a 15-minute shower. While the conserva-<lb />tions efforts are important, Boyles<lb />said, there is only one solution that<lb />will fully fix the problem.<lb /><lb /> oIt will rain eventually.<lb />The big question .is whether<lb />we get enough to recharge all<lb />of our supplies, ? Boyles said.<lb /> oIf we don Tt, then we face the<lb />likelihood that we're going to<lb />be more susceptible to drought<lb />next summer. ? i<lb /><lb />On Falls Lake, which is<lb />Raleigh Ts primary source of<lb />water and is more than seven<lb />feet below normal, marina<lb />owner Amy Poole sees the stark<lb />markers of the drought every<lb />day " looking at dirt where<lb />there once was water.<lb /><lb /> oT don Tt have any boats on<lb />the bottom yet, ? They<lb />responded in kind, one fan almost getting into<lb />a physical altercation with one of the UCF stu-<lb />dents.<lb /><lb />As far as the game went, the current was<lb />reversed in the second half of the ECU-UCF<lb />game, resulting in a substantial ECU lead. When<lb />it was clear their team would not make a come-<lb />back, the UCF fans went to exit the stadium as<lb />subtly and quietly as possible. Certain ECU fans<lb />exchanged inappropriate shouts with the UCF<lb />fans. At this point, one of the UCF students<lb />stopped and said, oHey guys...Good game, ok? ?<lb /><lb />Remember, this was one of the same guys who<lb />had been verbally trashing ECU as a team and a<lb /><lb />school. Are you KIDDING ME!<lb /><lb />Of course now it Ts a mellow ogood game, ?<lb />now that you are LOSING and can Tt back up<lb />your talk.<lb /><lb />I digress "the point is, this is when I began<lb />to doubt all these emails with shame shame T<lb />watermarked in the margins. With my experi-<lb />ence at the game, I suddenly wondered how much<lb />of ECU Ts bad sportsmanship was spurred by<lb />OTHER team Ts bad sportsmanship. This is not<lb />to say that one display of rude behavior justifies<lb />another, only to suggest that the rumors circulat-<lb />ing about ECU fans T atrocious actions at games<lb />are not so cut and dry.<lb /><lb />Yes, ECU fans sometimes act badly at football<lb />games without reason. We as humans are<lb />cursed with our mortality, however, fixed in<lb />the tacit belief we seemingly hold that we shall<lb />live forever. We take for granted those close to<lb />us, going about our business in the morning,<lb />expecting to arrive home to their embrace. But<lb />when we arrive that evening to find their seat<lb />empty, the realization is time-stopping.<lb /><lb />The word osnatched ? was used previously<lb />and can be used to detail the death of mearly<lb />everyone who passes away. However, the most.<lb />recent death I have had the experience in know-<lb />ing emulated that word flawlessly. No natural<lb />causes here, my friend. No inevitable accident.<lb />Just a man, a gun and the opportunity to act,<lb /><lb />and act he did.<lb /><lb />No spin in this article. No take on urban crime<lb />rates and the number of homicides across the state.<lb />No sociological look at violence and poverty.<lb /><lb />All I have to offer is a reminder, to myself<lb />before anyone else. Og said it best when stating<lb />the outlook oyou will only find tomorrow T on<lb />the calendars of fools. ? Spend your time wisely<lb />friends, with everyone that you know. Never put<lb />off telling someone how you feel about them,<lb />and by no means leave a room on an angry<lb />note. No one is promised another day, so leave<lb />nothing unsaid.<lb /><lb />As for me, I have only my-words, but their<lb />impact is fleeting and in no way guaranteed.<lb />If you are reading this, share in that fact with<lb />someone. Upon seeing it a<lb />second time, I came to the conclusion that it was a<lb />flyer wall of sorts. That seemed to be a great idea as<lb />there really is nothing like that on campus. oCool, ?<lb /><lb />I thought, onow I can cele see in one spot where<lb />a lot of student activities are happening. ?<lb /><lb />Then one evening upon leaving the Rec. Center<lb />I. saw some young ladies with a bucket of paint<lb />getting reading to cover the wood wall. I was<lb />absolutely vexed, and my only conclusion was that<lb />a black foreground would make it easier to see the<lb />things they were to be put on the wall. Going back<lb />a day later, I finally had my answer as to what I<lb />was looking at: oThe Hate Wall. ?<lb /><lb />That Ts right-in case you didn Tt know (and it<lb />wouldn't surprise me if 75 percent of students didn Tt),<lb />there was a wall outside of Mendenhall and the Rec.<lb />Center which consisted of hate graffiti. If one would<lb />have taken the time to read the hideous things writ-<lb />ten, they. would more than likely be confused by most<lb />of the phrases and/or words placed there.<lb /><lb />- Upon my first visual encounter with the<lb />bigoted pieces of wood, I was struck that most of<lb />the things written are not very offensive; in fact,<lb />some of them are just funny. I don Tt think I should<lb />go into which ones I found funny (if you are curi-<lb />ous perhaps you should have discovered that for<lb /><lb />-yourself). Due to my race, white man, I am more<lb /><lb />than likely not oallowed ? to get into which ones<lb />were comical, but I can at least say the few and<lb />far between ones involving white people were also<lb />good. Of course the wall doesn Tt just cover race,<lb /><lb />but a variety of other ohate ? filled phrases cover- _<lb /><lb />ing ethnicity also.<lb /><lb />As I read this though, I couldn Tt help but<lb />wonder if anyone gave out a good laugh when they<lb />were painting these, or if upon painting, had to sit<lb />and try to think of something good to put on the<lb />wall. I wondered this because most of the phrases<lb />I have never heard anyone say and, in fact, many<lb />were just a collage of curse words.<lb /><lb />What are we supposed to be seeing? What am<lb />I supposed to feel when I see an ugly wall placed in<lb />one of the most awkward spots on campus? When<lb />I saw what it was, I was str'uck by the stupidity<lb />of it and when I walked toward it, the first time,<lb />someone walking past said, oThat thing is so ugly. ?<lb />If I am supposed to be shocked when I see this,<lb />then apparently the people who came up with it<lb />have never heard of the Internet. There is some<lb />really messed up stuff on the Internet that I believe<lb />is just desensitizing us towards being bigots and<lb />racists. Even Hollywood has done a hell of a job<lb />Just making bigotry kind of funny and giving<lb />everyone a sense of humor towards stereotypes<lb />and silly ohate ? words or phrases. Of course this<lb />isn Tt to say there aren Tt some words for each race,<lb />which are just plain racist sounding, but behind<lb />closed doors and among friends they still hold the<lb />same comedic value. -<lb /><lb />I am not entirely sure ofthe purpose of the<lb />wall of hate. In fact I found it offensive to walk<lb />down that sidewalk and have read it. I think<lb />the wall only represents the amount of hateful<lb />rhetoric students could come up with at the time<lb />they painted it. Next year though, they should do<lb />a fundraiser so we can surround the school with<lb />walls 300 feet high, and on each wall in giant<lb />white words, we can write the most offensive crap<lb />we can think of. That way all of Greenville and<lb />every airplane can see that hate T still exists and<lb />we are aware.<lb /><lb />es This writer can be contacted at<lb />--opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />A tale of two<lb />senators<lb /><lb />Burr takes action while Dole<lb />twiddles thumbs<lb /><lb />J.D. LEWIS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Last week I shared with you my idea of requir-<lb />ing the U.S. Postal Service to place recycling bins<lb />in their facilities for the depositing of unwanted |<lb />sales papers and other junk mail. I also shared<lb />that of all the elected officials I had contacted<lb />concerning this, the only one to respond was Sen.<lb />Elizabeth Dole. I stated that I had not expected<lb />much from her or Sen. Richard Burr, meaning<lb />that the Republican Party isn Tt synonymous with<lb />environmentalism. I now believe that I spoke too<lb />soon as far as Burr is concerned.<lb /><lb />I suppose I should have been more optimistic<lb />about Burr. After all, he had already served the<lb />people of North Carolina for 10 years in the U.S.<lb />House while Sen. Dole took the Hillary Clinton<lb />carpetbagger route to the Senate (yes, I know she<lb />was born in North Carolina, but nearly 40 years in<lb />Washington, D.C. and Kansas, a North Carolinian<lb />do not make).<lb /><lb />Dole Ts letter to me began, oThank you so<lb />much for taking time to write to me with your<lb />concerns. Receiving your ideas and concerns is so<lb />important in order for me to represent you, and<lb />our state, to the best of my ability in the United<lb />States Senate. ?<lb /><lb />Okay. So far, so good.<lb /><lb />She continued, oThe issue you describe is<lb />indeed important and deserves review. I very much<lb />appreciate you sharing your opinions and thoughts<lb />with me regarding this matter. Please be assured<lb />that I will keep your insights in mind should perti-<lb />nent legislation be considered in the Senate. ?<lb /><lb />Now, I Tm no expert on Senate procedure, but<lb />as a senator, couldn Tt she introduce the pertinent<lb />legislation herself?<lb /><lb />She concluded, oThank you again for taking<lb />the time to share your ideas and concerns. If I can.<lb />be of further assistance, ee do not hesitate to<lb />contact me. ?<lb /><lb />Further assistance? She wasn Tt. of any assis-<lb />tance! The only thing we established is that she Ts<lb />thankful I wasted my time on her.<lb /><lb />I received Sen. Burr Ts reply over the weekend.<lb />While he did take three months to get back to me,<lb />his letter was a lot more positive.<lb /><lb /> oThank you for contacting me about requiring<lb />recycling bins in thé Post Office. I appreciate hear-<lb />ing your thoughts on this issue. ?<lb /><lb />I like that he specified the issue, which indicates<lb />that he actually read my letter and took the time to<lb />respond instead of signing off on a form letter.<lb /><lb />He continued, oI certainly understand how<lb />frustrating it can be to open a mail box only to<lb />find it packed with advertisements and other junk<lb />mail. I also recognize the amount of waste associ-<lb />ated with this issue. Your solution to the problem<lb />makes a whole lot of sense. In fact, I have asked<lb />my staff to inquire with the Postal Service to see<lb />ifit has any plans to provide recycling bins in local<lb />branches. ?<lb /><lb />Isn Tt that a whole lot better response than<lb />that drivel I received from Sen. Dole? Okay, so<lb />it Ts doubtful Sen. Burr is another Al Gore when it<lb />comes to environmental issues (that Ts not neces-<lb />sarily a bad thing), and his response in no way<lb />guarantees a solution to the problem, but at least<lb />he recognizes there is a problem and is willing to<lb />try and do something about it ... unlike his senior<lb />colleague.<lb /><lb />I apologize to my readers, and to Sen. Burr, for<lb />jumping to the wrong conclusion and disparaging<lb />his constituent service without his having a chance<lb />to respond to me. Hopefully with his help, some-<lb />thing good might yet come e from the nightmare<lb />of junk mail.<lb /><lb />* e<lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Kimberly Bellamy Rachel King<lb />News Editor Opinion Editor<lb />Greg Katski Ronnie Woodward<lb /><lb />Sports Editor Asst. Some<lb />signals that may indicate stress<lb />include. headaches, irritability,<lb /><lb />lack of concentration and ten-<lb /><lb />sion. It is almost impossible<lb /><lb />for anyone to go through a day:<lb /><lb />without experiencing some type<lb />of stress.<lb /><lb />According to the Anxiety<lb />Disorders Association of Amer-<lb />ica, almost half of employed<lb /> Americans claim to experience<lb /><lb />No matter what<lb /><lb />stress in their everyday lives.<lb />19 million American adults and<lb />college students are affected<lb />by anxiety or depression, and<lb />according to the National Mental<lb />Health Association, seven per-<lb />cent of college students reported<lb />experiencing anxiety. More than<lb />30 percent of college freshman<lb />and 38 percent of college women<lb />reported feeling overstressed<lb />most of the time.<lb /><lb />While a little stress can help<lb />students get motivated and stay<lb />on task, too much can cause<lb />exhaustion that prevents stu-<lb />dents from being able to study<lb />well, thus affecting their health<lb />and even their exam results.<lb /><lb />Georgia Childs, assistant<lb />director for Peer Health and<lb />advisor of the ECU Healthy<lb />Pirates, recommends students<lb />stay healthy in order to perform<lb />well on their exams.<lb /><lb />In addition to good study-<lb />ing, strong habits are necessary<lb />to prevent additional stress and<lb />possible sickness during that<lb />time.<lb /><lb /> oTime management is key,<lb />along with making lists and pri-<lb />oritizing what needs to be done.<lb />Students should be in a nice,<lb />guiet and comfortable place,<lb />away from people. ?<lb /><lb />Childs also recommends<lb />that students focus on one topic<lb />at a time, preventing cramming<lb />at the last minute before the<lb />exam.<lb /><lb /> oSpend a few hours on one<lb />class and then take a break<lb />before concentrating on the<lb />other. Besides the physical aspect<lb />of rock climbing, there is an<lb />inner component involved in<lb />the sport. Climbing pushes the<lb />climber to confront fears and<lb />attitudes about themselves.<lb /><lb /> oT believe it works your brain<lb /> the most, ? Bringolf said. oGet-<lb />ting over a fear. of heights and<lb />knowing you can do something<lb />and pushing your limits all<lb />requires a strong head. It Ts all<lb />about how you feel with yourself,<lb />and if your not happy, practice<lb />it at it. ?<lb /><lb />There are five basic types of<lb />climbing, some more dangerous<lb />than others: . ice, traditional,<lb />sport, top rope and bouldering.<lb />Another type of rock climbing<lb />is multi-pitch climbing, which<lb />can take place hundreds or thou-<lb />sands of feet up and is usually<lb />done out West where there is an<lb />abundance of large rock.<lb /><lb />Bouldering is the most<lb />common form of climbing and<lb /> it does not require a harness or<lb /><lb />Different rock climbing techniques offer a great work out to students.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />a rope. Crash pads and ospot-<lb />ters ? are used in the instance. of<lb />falls. It is low to the ground and<lb />involves using both practiced<lb />and situation-generated tech-<lb />niques to traverse the rock or<lb />wall. Indoor bouldering allows<lb />for the creation of different<lb />routes for problem solving on<lb />artificial rock:<lb /><lb /> oIndoor climbing is typically<lb />for training and also a way to<lb /><lb />for beginners to start, ? He finds that his<lb />father is a Janitor and after<lb />meeting Jude, has no inter-<lb />est in forming any sort of<lb />relationship with him. The<lb />relationships Jude does form in<lb />America, however, prove to be<lb />intense and everlasting.<lb /><lb />Jude meets Max, an ivy-<lb />league, soon-to-be college<lb />dropout, and through Max<lb />meets his sister, Lucy, a young<lb />well-off American girl dealing<lb />with the loss of her boyfriend<lb />to the war. Jude and Max<lb />move to New York where they<lb />meet their Janis Joplin-esque<lb />landlord, Sadie. Their lives<lb />are the epitome of everything<lb />desirable in the 1960 Ts: free<lb />love, few responsibilities and<lb />living life to the fullest despite<lb />unavoidable consequences.<lb /><lb />Unfortunately, the good<lb />times are cut short for Max,<lb /><lb />who receives notice that he<lb />has been drafted and will soon<lb />leave for war. This brings<lb />Jude and Lucy closer, but also<lb />sparks an intense anti-war<lb />activism in Lucy.<lb /><lb />Lucy feels taking a proactive<lb />approach to protesting the war is<lb />the only way and eventually criti-<lb />cizes Jude Ts artistic endeavors.<lb /><lb />The rift between the two<lb />characters is felt by the audi-<lb />ence, and leaves viewers long-<lb />ing for a happy ending:<lb /><lb />The film has a number of<lb />intriguing elements. It fea-<lb />tures about 33 Beatles songs<lb />performed by the actors, and<lb />their musical renditions are<lb />truly remarkable. Secondly, the<lb />film Ts visuals are completely<lb />entrancing. The cinematogra-<lb />phy is worthy of praise, as many<lb />scenes light up the theater with<lb />their bursts of color and intense<lb />visual appeal.<lb /><lb />The overall spirit of the<lb />film is captured in the last<lb /><lb />scene. Jude stands on a build-<lb />ing singing the Beatles clas-<lb />sic, oAll You Need Is Love. ?<lb />Bystanders join in forming a<lb />chorus of hope and a celebra-<lb />tion of life. No matter what<lb />gender, religion, sexuality or ethnic group one might associate themselves<lb />with, there are many organizations available for anyone who wants to be<lb />a part of the diversity on campus.<lb /><lb />Hillel is a student-led Jewish organization that is part of the larg-<lb />est Jewish campus organization in the world. The overall national<lb />organization provides opportunities for Jewish students to explore their<lb />identities through a global network of over 500 regional centers, campus<lb />foundations and organizations. Beginning on ECU's campus in the early<lb />1970s, Hillel aims to provide opportunities and networking between<lb />Jewish students.<lb /><lb />There are approximately 50 Jewish students that attend ECU, which<lb />is around one percent of the population. For these students, as well as<lb />others who might not be Jewish, Hillel provides the chance to get involved<lb />with Jewish life. Using cultural arts, religious advocacy and the belief<lb /><lb />in social justice, students are strongly encouraged to practice their faith<lb /><lb />and to share with others.<lb /><lb />While providing the resources for members to practice their religion in<lb />ameaningful way for themselves, Hillel aims to help students take respon-<lb />sibility for their Jewish identity and culture. We<lb />lost the divisional conference<lb />championship with that [loss],<lb />so it was kind of like we were a<lb />little disappointed from that loss,<lb />so we had to come back and get<lb />ready for N.C. State. Leading<lb />up to that game everybody was<lb />excited and nervous.<lb /><lb /> oThe fans were really putting<lb />a lot of pressure on us, like, Hey<lb />this is the one we<lb /><lb />ber. It was about<lb />bragging rights,<lb />and it was a lot of<lb />fun to get that<lb />win. ?<lb />While<lb /><lb />will always be<lb />remembered<lb />in the hearts<lb />of Pirate fans<lb />everywhere,<lb />there have<lb />been far bigger<lb />moments in the<lb />rivalry.<lb /><lb />From 1983-<lb />1987 ECU beat<lb />N.C. State at<lb />Carter-Finley<lb />Stadium in three<lb />out of five match-<lb />ups between the<lb />schools. Each<lb />time the Pirates<lb />won, ECU fans<lb />poured out of the<lb />stands onto the<lb />N.C. State field and tore dou<lb />the home team Ts goal posts in<lb />the ultimate sign of disrespect.<lb />The celebrations finally boiled<lb />over after ECU beat N.C. State<lb />in Raleigh convincingly, 32-<lb />14, to start the 1987 season.<lb />With 56,800 fans on hand, the<lb />storming of the field by Pirate<lb />fans turned into an all-out riot.<lb />Damage was done to Carter-<lb />Finley Stadium, a security guard<lb />was injured and one lone fan was<lb />arrested...<lb /><lb />Citing the riot, former N.C.<lb /><lb />SID<lb /><lb />State Athletic Director Jim Val-<lb />vano suspended the yearly series<lb />indefinitely. ECU countered the<lb />suspension with one of its own,<lb />citing that the series would not<lb /><lb />resume until N.C. State agreed<lb /><lb />to play in Greenville.<lb /><lb />After the first 20 games in<lb />the season series were played in<lb />Raleigh, ECU finally got its wish<lb />in 1999. The Pirates responded,<lb />beating the Wolfpack, 23-6, in<lb />front ofa sellout crowd of 50,092<lb />fans, the largest crowd ever at<lb />Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.<lb /><lb />N.C. State returns this year<lb />for the second game ever between<lb />the two teams in Greenville.<lb />ECU offensive coordinator Steve<lb />Shankweiler, who was the offen-<lb />sive line coach of the Pirates T<lb />1999 squad, pointed out the<lb />differences between the two<lb />matchups.<lb /><lb /> oWe had eight wins at that<lb />point [in 1999], and that was<lb />our ninth win that year. We were<lb />a very solid football team, ? said<lb />Shankweiler. oOur football team<lb />right now is not quite to that<lb /><lb />point yet; we could be, but we're<lb />not there yet. State had just lost<lb />to Carolina the week before and<lb />coach O TCain Ts job was in jeop-<lb />ardy. As opposed to now, they Tve<lb />got a new coach in O TBrien so<lb />there Ts a lot of enthusiasm. ?<lb /><lb />There is also a lot of enthu-<lb />siasm around ECU these days.<lb />Hundreds of students camped<lb />out the night before student<lb />tickets were made available, and<lb />many more waited for hours the<lb />morning the tickets went on sale.<lb />At the time this article is being<lb /><lb />Former tight end Luke Fisher scores the game winning TD against N.C. State in the Peach Bowl.<lb /><lb />written, tickets for the game on<lb />stubhub.com range in price from<lb />$90-$250.<lb /><lb />Shankweiler hopes that the<lb />Pirates T fan base comes in full<lb />force on Saturday.<lb /><lb /> oIf they're not there then<lb />we're going to be hurting. When<lb />we go out to warm up and the<lb />place goes nuts, that Ts unbeliev-<lb />able was it does for our players, ?<lb />said Shankweiler. oThe student<lb />body has been the best, it Ts better<lb />than it was in 91. I really believe<lb />that. The student body has been<lb /><lb />as good as I Tve ever seen, so it<lb />has a tremendous impact on<lb />how these kids react. When they<lb />come on the field just to warm up<lb />and they see those people going<lb />nuts just for them warming up, it<lb />runs chills down your spine. ?<lb /><lb />For those who don Tt know,<lb />the 1991 season was the most<lb />successful in the history of Pirate<lb />football. ECU finished off an<lb />amazing run through the regular<lb />season by beating none other<lb />than N.C. State in the Peach<lb />Bowl, 37-34. The Pirates finished<lb />that season 10-1,<lb />and ranked No. 9<lb />in the nation.<lb /><lb /> oWinning the<lb />game was a real<lb />emotional high<lb />but it wasn Tt so<lb />much the game, ?<lb />said Shankwei-<lb />ler, who was<lb />ECU's co-offen-<lb />sive coordinator<lb />and offensive line<lb />coach in 1991. oIt<lb />was the culmi-<lb />nation of all the<lb />things that hap-<lb />pened during the<lb />season; the heart-<lb />break at Illinois<lb />[losing 38-31 in<lb />the first game of<lb />the season] and<lb />turning around<lb />and beating<lb />South Carolina,<lb />Syracuse in the<lb /> odome ? and win-<lb />ning the Pitts-<lb />burg game on the<lb />last play of the game. The season<lb />was just like a high, and the<lb />Peach Bowl was the crowning<lb />jewel to the whole deal. ?<lb /><lb />Smith, who was a true fresh-<lb /><lb />man running back for ECU's 1991 "<lb /><lb />team, thinks that the game truly<lb />rekindled the rivalry.<lb /><lb /> oIt was amazing, the whole<lb />game was electric. It was packed,<lb />it was sold out; half of it was ECU<lb />fans, half of it was N.C. State fans, ?<lb />said Smith. oYou look over at one<lb />side and see all the purple, you<lb />look over on the other side and see<lb /><lb />all the red. It was kind of cold that<lb />day, but the crowd was just into<lb />it. When we started making that<lb />comeback, that Ts when the crowd<lb />really exploded.<lb /><lb /> oIt was just an awesome feel-<lb />ing because we felt like they didn't -<lb />respect us as a university or as a<lb />team, and they never had us on<lb />the schedule. So just getting the<lb />opportunity to play them that year<lb />was real special; two in-state rivals<lb />taken to the Peach Bowl in Atlanta,<lb />it was just an awesome experience.<lb />There were guys on the other<lb />team that you played ball with and<lb />just so many things tied into it,<lb />with the alumni and everything. ?<lb /><lb />And therein lies the hatred<lb />felt for N.C. State. ECU has.<lb />always had to fight for respect<lb />from its neighbor to the west.<lb /><lb /> oThey kind oflook down on us<lb />because we're in Conference USA, ?<lb />said Smith. oBut you know, we<lb />think it Ts a rivalry, and they should<lb />too because J think we Tve won<lb />pretty much the [recent] majority<lb />of the games we've played them. We<lb />know it Ts arivalry. We're going to<lb />go out there and kick some butt. ?<lb /><lb />Although still disrespected,<lb />ECU knows that the wins count<lb />the most.<lb /><lb /> oIf you don't play them, if you<lb />don't beat them, you'll never out-<lb />recruit them, ? said Shankweiler.<lb /> oSo last year and this year, these<lb />are the first steps of doing that ona<lb />consistent basis. If we can beat them<lb />two years in a row, | think that has<lb />an impact on the vision that people<lb />have of ECU, not of N.C. State, but<lb />our place. ?<lb /><lb />Pirate fans, players, coaches,<lb />alumni and students have a<lb />chance to make a true state-<lb />ment this weekend against their<lb />most-hated rivals.<lb /><lb /> oWell we're expecting a<lb />rowdy crowd; rowdy Dowdy<lb />this weekend, ? Smith said.<lb /><lb />Shankweiler has another<lb />prediction.<lb /><lb /> oIn terms of the rivalry, I<lb />think it will be a war. I think it<lb />will come down to the last play. ?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />s Lome Home fo Cope Bec<lb /><lb />Now Preleasing for 2008<lb />12,3 &amp; 4 Bedroom Townhomes<lb /><lb />ae to 2000 vane feet<lb /><lb />e will be hosting<lb /><lb />stay tuned for<lb /><lb />apather Bar Night, |<lb /><lb />Cpper Beech<lb /><lb />OWN HOMES<lb /><lb />203 East Fifth Street<lb />Greenville, NC 27858<lb />(252) 757-1015 www.cbeech.com<lb /><lb />Show your<lb />Poltantnn of Hom<lb /><lb />Join us for some t<lb /><lb />Pir<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />THURSDAY OCTOBER 18, 2007<lb /><lb />Pirates slap around Seahawks in preparation for N.C. State<lb /><lb />ECU club ice hockey<lb />team continues<lb />offensive dominance<lb />KELLEN HOLTZMAN<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />ECU Ts high-octane offense<lb />continued to roll over the weekend,<lb /><lb />piling up 20 goals on rival UNC-<lb /><lb />Wilmington.<lb /><lb />Friday night Ts outcome was<lb />never in doubt, as the Pirates<lb />pounded the Seahawks, 13-1, in<lb />the home opener, before pulling<lb />away in a low-scoring affair on<lb />Saturday, 7-2.<lb /><lb />After Sean Burns opened<lb />Friday's scoring account for ECU,<lb /><lb />UNCW managed to level the.<lb /><lb />match at 1-1. Senior Nathan Buhr<lb />answered, scoring his first of four<lb />goals right as the clock, indicat-<lb />ing a five-on-three power play, hit<lb /><lb />triple-zeros.<lb /><lb />The Pirates added three more<lb />goals in the first period and tallied<lb />six more in the second period to<lb />bury the Seahawks.<lb /><lb />Captain Corey Fleitz accounted<lb />for five goals on the night, netting<lb />a hat trick as well as setting up<lb />Burns and Tyler Falcon goals.<lb /><lb />Despite ECU Ts dominance in the<lb />series, the battle for Eastern North<lb />Carolina is becoming intense.<lb /><lb />Friday night Ts game saw 13<lb />penalties in the first period alone.<lb />The referees were forced to hand<lb />out three disqualifications on the<lb />night. Sophomore Mitchell Sears<lb />claimed one of the ejections while<lb />two Seahawk players also left<lb />the ice. ?<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts always more fun when<lb />you get a local rival team coming<lb />in, ? said Buhr of the physical play.<lb /> oThey've been talking stuff online,<lb />but to shut them up like this is<lb />really special. ?<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />A change of goaltenders and<lb />a quick start helped UNCW hang<lb />around on Saturday. UNCW<lb />Jumped out to a 1-0 lead to silence<lb />the home crowd.<lb /><lb />Fletiz earned the equalizer<lb />before Buhr scored the go-ahead<lb />goal in the last three minutes of<lb />the first period for ECU. A second<lb />period Joe Sonatore goal gave the<lb />Pirates some breathing room but<lb />UNCW retaliated to cut the lead to<lb />3-2 before the second intermission.<lb /><lb />Scoring proved to be a greater<lb />challenge for the Pirates with the<lb />Seahawks controlling the puck<lb />with more efficiency.<lb /><lb /> oBasically, the boys came out<lb />with more intensity last night, ?<lb />said Cox. oThey were hungry to<lb />get the puck. Today they were a<lb />little slack to start the game.<lb /><lb />ECU Ts offense finally emerged<lb />in the final period. The Pirates<lb />scored four unanswered goals to<lb />put away the Seahawks.<lb /><lb />The Pirates T offense proved<lb />yet again why Cox hailed the<lb />depth of the team throughout the<lb />pre-season. Seven different players<lb />tallied goals.<lb /><lb /> oThe biggest difficulty we<lb />have as a coaching staff is getting<lb />these guys to consistently play at<lb />their own level, and not at the level<lb />of the other team, ? said Cox.<lb /><lb />Senior Brent Falcon and fresh-<lb />man Matt Dalgetty each saw<lb />action over the weekend. Falcon<lb />allowed only one goal on 17 shots<lb />on Friday while Dalgetty saw 32<lb />shots come his way the following<lb />day, giving up two goals.<lb /><lb />The two-goaltender system<lb />is likely to remain intact for the<lb />near future.<lb /><lb /> oT think right now Dalgetty<lb />might be playing a little bit stronger<lb />than Brent, T said Cox. oBut Brent<lb />played exceptionally well last night.<lb />I feel very comfortable having either<lb />of those guys in the net. ?<lb /><lb />Pirates win late-nig<lb /><lb />ECU gains<lb />control of C-USA<lb /><lb />RONNIE WOODWARD<lb />ASST. The lone bright<lb />spot of the weekend came when<lb />senior Kelley Wernert set the<lb />ECU career record for kills<lb />during the Memphis game.<lb /><lb />The Pirates faced a Memphis<lb />(16-8, 5-3) team that came into<lb />the match locked in a four-way<lb />tie for third place in the confer-<lb />ence, just above the Pirates. The<lb />hard-fought match lasted five<lb />games, with Memphis having to<lb />come back to get the win.<lb /><lb />Memphis jumped out to a<lb />13-8 lead early in the first game.<lb />The Pirates fought back to tie ©<lb />the score, 18-18, as they went<lb />on a seven-point run behind<lb />the serves of Stephanie Turner.<lb />They would go on to win the<lb />first game convincingly, 30-21.<lb /><lb />The teams went back and<lb />forth at the beginning of the<lb />second game and were all<lb />squared up at 11-11. This time<lb />Memphis made the run to pull<lb />ahead by four. The Pirates kept<lb />up the fight and came within<lb />one point of tying it up again,<lb />but at 20-19 Memphis took over<lb />and closed out the game on a<lb />10-5 streak to take it, 30-24.<lb /><lb />The Pirates dominated<lb />throughout the third set. They<lb />extended an early lead to 22-12<lb />when Memphis took a timeout to<lb />try and disrupt the Pirates T rhythm.<lb />But nothing they did could slow<lb />the Pirates down, as ECU won by.<lb />the same margin, 30-20.<lb /><lb />The Pirates let the fourth<lb />and fifth games slip away as<lb />they failed to make enough<lb />plays to get the win. Memphis<lb />took a close fourth game, 30-<lb />28, and pulled out the win in<lb />the fifth with a 15-11 score.<lb /><lb />Wernert finished the match<lb />with 30 kills to lead team,<lb /><lb />Photo by Robyn<lb /><lb />|<lb /><lb />Blliside hitter Kelly Wernert sets up a Kill against a UTEP defender.<lb /><lb />while Mignon Dubenion and<lb />Peyton Thompson added 12<lb />and 11 respectively. She also attributed her<lb />success to the support of her team-<lb />mates, oI couldn't do it without my<lb />team, so I'm proud of them too. ?<lb /><lb />The team faced UAB (16-6,<lb />6-2) Sunday and the result was a<lb />little more one-sided. UAB came<lb />out blazing and put the pressure<lb />on the Pirates early. The Pirates<lb />played flat in the early going<lb />as UAB built. up momentum.<lb />The Pirates just couldn't find<lb />any rhythm in the first two<lb />games mostly due to a stiff UAB<lb />defense. As a result, UAB came<lb />away with the first two games,<lb />30-22 and 30-23. :<lb /><lb />The Pirates rebounded in the<lb />third game, and with the score<lb />tied at 22 they went on an 8-4<lb />run to close out the game, 30-26.<lb />But UAB Ts big hitters proved to<lb />be too much, and in the fourth<lb />game they sealed the match with<lb />a 33-31 victory. After the game,<lb />Trish Monroe commented on<lb />the match.<lb /><lb /> oWe had a slow start today<lb /><lb />and we didn Tt start fighting T<lb /><lb />until too late, ? said Monroe. oWe<lb />picked it up but we weren't ready<lb />to play them this time. ?<lb /><lb />Next weekend the Pirates<lb />play conference leader Marshall<lb />(14-8, 7-1). twice in a rare home<lb />and away weekend. <lb />ECU fans had every reason to cheer on Saturday, as the ECU Pirates defeated the UTEP Miners<lb />45-42 in overtime. : :<lb /><lb />But there were two reasons why ECU fans in Greenville couldn Tt cheer " Time Warner and<lb />Suddenlink Cable. Because neither Time Warner nor Suddenlink Cable carries the Mid-Atlantic<lb />Sports Network, the network that carried the ECU-UTEP game.<lb /><lb />So, while Pirates fans in Maryland saw Dwayne Harris dash 57 yards for a TD, Pirates fans in<lb /><lb />Virginia saw Jamar Bryant catch an 80-yard touchdown pass and Pirates fans with DIRECTV or<lb />Dish Network saw Rob Kass plunge into the end zone with the game-winning score " local ECU<lb />fans who have Time Wamer or Suddenlink Cable missed every second of this exciting game.<lb /><lb />ECU football fans, tell Time Warner and Suddenlink you want Pirates football on MASN.<lb /><lb />GO TO PLAYBALLNOW.ORG<lb /></p>
