<lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />Bush loves<lb /><lb />the kids<lb /><lb />SCHIP veto proves Bush<lb />has no soul<lb /><lb />JUSTIN SUMMERS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Last week George Bush used the fourth veto<lb />of his presidency to shoot down the popular bipar-<lb />tisan healthcare plan, the State Children Ts Health<lb />Insurance Program. SCHIP provides healthcare<lb />to children who come from families that earn too<lb />much to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to<lb />provide for private insurance. Set up by Ted Ken-<lb />nedy and Hillary Clinton in 1997, SCHIP was the<lb />largest development in State Health Care since<lb />Medicaid was set up in the sixties. To qualify<lb />for SCHIP you must be under 200 percent of the<lb />federal poverty line, roughly $41,000 a year for a<lb />family of four. The new SCHIP proposal sought to<lb />increase the income you could be making and still<lb />qualify for SCHIP by 100%. Due to a rise in the<lb />cost of living, a decrease in medical coverage from<lb />employers and the increasing cost of healthcare,<lb />the increase was seen as an effective way to insure<lb />the 9 million children who are still uninsured in<lb />this country.<lb /><lb />In addition to those terms, the bill asked for $35<lb />billion over the next 5 years to potentially insure<lb />another 4 million children, bringing the number of<lb />children insured under SCHIP to over 10 million<lb />by 2012. This increase in spending would be paid<lb />for by a raise in the tobacco tax and was approved<lb />by both the House and Senate:<lb /><lb />The bill received great praise from most mem-<lb />bers of the House and Senate. In the Senate 18<lb />Republicans voted for the bill and in the House 45<lb />Republicans approved the terms of the bill. Though<lb />it was not enough to override the looming veto<lb />to come from Bush, it showed if nothing else the<lb />popularity of the bill. .<lb /><lb />Bush Ts veto of this bill was not unexpected. As<lb />Bush Ts base put more and more pressure on him<lb />to use some fiscal oversight, he vowed to make<lb />drastic cuts in spending; even if it Ts at the expense<lb />of children Ts health.<lb /><lb />While the proposed defense budget set to be<lb />approved sometime this. week stands at 460 billion<lb />or more, it is almost inconceivable to me that Bush<lb />cannot afford to shell out 35 billion for poor chil-<lb />dren. Once again it proves that when it comes to<lb />making the right decision, Bush listens to the hard<lb />line rhetoric of special interests and right wing<lb />fundamentalists before the people of America.<lb /><lb />*If you would like to do something to help<lb />children in need of health care, write your local<lb />Congressman and ask him to override Bush Ts veto<lb />of SCHIP. All that is needed is an additional 14<lb />Republican votes in Congress to override the veto<lb />and provide millions of children with the health-<lb />care they need -<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com..<lb /><lb /> oGimme More <lb />Britney Spears<lb /><lb />Going from fame to shame<lb /><lb />LISA ENSMINGER<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Britney Spears is planning for an album release<lb />this November, and I am not quite sure if she will<lb />manage to pull off a comeback. If you haven Tt seen<lb />the news (even CNN reports on her) or tabloids<lb />while waiting in line at the grocery store, Britney<lb />Spears is spiraling her career down the tubes as<lb />we speak. It started off with her classy wedding<lb />with the oworld Ts most hated rap star, Mr. Kevin<lb />Federline. From there she was pregnant with his<lb />two children, one following another.<lb /><lb />The new mommy wasn Tt quite the HOT pop<lb />princess she used to be while drinking Starbucks<lb />left and right and walking into public bathrooms<lb />with no shoes and a bag of potato chips while<lb /> oprego. She then started partying night after night<lb />(sometimes with Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan...<lb />yikes!!), and we're not supposed to wonder where<lb />her kids were at these times? She then had a major<lb />breakdown and shaved her whole head bald with<lb />her own hands.<lb /><lb />After she checked into rehab and announced a<lb />new album and breakthrough performance on the<lb />VMA's, Spears had most of us thinking she might<lb />make a great comeback. WRONG!<lb /><lb />Britney ruined her VMA performance from<lb />the start with her half-done extensions and not-<lb />so-flattering sparkly black bikini costume. The<lb />first words of her almost-hit song, oGimme More <lb />are, oIt Ts Britney, b****. Probably shouldn't be<lb />saying that, Britney, if you can Tt lip synch to a<lb />song with the whole song consisting of only two<lb />words: ogimme more. Not only could she not<lb /> osing appropriately, she couldn't dance, as she was<lb />tripping and owalking through thé routine like it<lb />was a rehearsal.<lb /><lb />Not only did she ruin her one and only oppor-<lb />tunity to make a comeback, she has now gotten<lb />herself into more trouble with two felony charges<lb />and losing custody of her children to Mr. K-Fed (I<lb />don Tt know which one is worse).<lb /><lb />Britney's new album is due out in November<lb />and is still on schedule. For some very few fans out<lb />there hoping for a breakthrough, all I have to say<lb />to Britney is ogood luck because she might say,<lb /> oOops, I did it again. <lb /><lb />Sources for this column include www.eonline.com.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />S<lb /><lb />THURSDAY OCTOBER 11, 2007<lb /><lb />pace A4<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />The sun is always shining and the sky is<lb />always blue; there are just rainy clouds in<lb />the way sometimes. I Tm what most people would consider a<lb />geek (or something like that). I Tm ok with that; I<lb />like geeky things, video games, computers and all<lb />awesome gadgets. I just wanted to let everyone<lb />open their minds to the little-known world of the<lb />skateboarder, so they can appreciate what they<lb />now take for granted.<lb /><lb />Just so we are on the same page, I Tm talking<lb />about normal skateboarding. Not long-board<lb />skateboarding, rollerblading or ice skating, all of<lb />which are cool in their own light; the real issue<lb />here is skateboarding.<lb /><lb />The coolest thing about skateboarding to me<lb />is that it is so new to the sports world, only having<lb />been around for the last 50 or so years. It didn Tt<lb />really come into its current light until the mid<lb />1990 Ts. Take pro sports like football, baseball or<lb />golf, and you Tve got hundreds of famous people<lb />from the last half of the century. Now try naming<lb />some famous skateboarders; I doubt you'd get far-<lb />ther than 5 people and most of them are probably<lb />still alive and skating.<lb /><lb />As someone who recently decided to pick up<lb />a skateboard and attempt to learn, I have found<lb />a brand new respect for anyone who can actually<lb />skateboard. I found it almost funny how, until I<lb />tried skateboarding for myself, I didn Tt really know<lb />how difficult it is.<lb /><lb />As a gamer, I Tve played skateboarding video<lb />games (like Tony Hawk's Skate), but these give you<lb />a false impression of skating. Skating isn Tt as easy<lb />a pushing some buttons and directing an analog<lb />stick. It takes lots and lots of time practicing to<lb />be good at it. Being able to balance on a board<lb />Just wide enough for your feet and long enough<lb />for you to stand on is hard enough. Add wheels to<lb />the bottom and some forward/backward motion,<lb />and it is like learning to walk all over again; fall-<lb />ing happens often.<lb /><lb />The overall point I want to make with this<lb />article is that when you see that kid walking<lb />into class with his/her skateboard, respect them.<lb />Understand that they are not like you and me.<lb />They are a skater. Webster says this means a<lb />person that skateboards, but to me it means a<lb />person that sees walking as lame and skateboard-<lb />ing as the answer to it.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Ck ey<lb /><lb />v<lb />es<lb />&amp;<lb />X<lb />PY<lb />; 4<lb />: <lb />} *<lb />PS<lb />AS<lb />qi<lb />A<lb />NY<lb />x<lb />&amp; (Le eS<lb />Esra aeeeeeene<lb />2 + bal<lb />BY<lb />% i<lb /> Fp rimmed aa<lb />Whe CEE ESE<lb />t eran. Now, it Ts pretty well accepted that frostbite<lb />won't make you healthy, although doctors have<lb />confirmed that going outside without a jacket<lb />won't make you sick " but don Tt do that, either.<lb /><lb />Nowadays, it Ts all about germs; everything we<lb />see now is antibacterial, and for good reason. The<lb />Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<lb />says most'common colds are viral and spread by<lb />germs. They still have not found a cure, but a good<lb />defense is the best offense.<lb /><lb />The best prevention is ofrequent hand washing,<lb />and not sharing items such as cups, glasses and<lb />utensils, according to the CDC.<lb /><lb />This is important because people are more<lb />contagious when they are just starting to get sick,<lb />not when they display noticeable symptoms.<lb /><lb />Think about this: the ofive second rule many<lb />people believe in?<lb /><lb />It Ts wrong. :<lb /><lb />In 2004, Jillian Clarke was recognized by the<lb />Annals of Improbable Research after she proved<lb />that the ofive second rule is nothing but a myth.<lb /><lb />When she placed gummy bears and cookies on a<lb />surface contaminated by E. coli for five seconds,<lb />those gummies and cookies came up really dirty<lb />(New York Times, May 2007).<lb /><lb />Interestingly, the Boston Globe published an<lb />article at the same time disagreeing with the cau-<lb />tionary statements above. Outscore ECU<lb /><lb />UTEP has scored at least 48 points in each<lb />of its last three games, and won all of them.<lb />Last week, quarterback Trevor Vittaloe set<lb />a UTEP freshman record with 318 passing<lb />yards and three touchdowns. Vittaloe has a<lb />slew of tall, athletic receivers to throw to,<lb />and a reliable running back in senior Marcus<lb />Thomas. The Miners need to use their offen-<lb />sive momentum from the last three weeks,<lb />and continue scoring at will.<lb /><lb />Pirates prepared to face<lb />the heat.in the Sun Bowl<lb /><lb />ECU and UTEP set to square off<lb />in meeting of hot teams<lb />JARED JACKSON<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The Pirates are back in business.<lb />A season that looked dark and dismal a few weeks ago for ECU suddenly turned<lb /><lb />_ bright with two straight wins over C-USA foes Houston and UCF. The Pirates are "<lb /><lb />back in the hunt for a postseason berth while currently sitting atop the C-USA<lb />East Division standings.<lb /><lb />This Saturday ECU [ 3-3, 2-1] travels to El Paso, Texas to take on UTEP (4-2,<lb />2-0] at the legendary Sun Bowl, with a kickoff set for 9 p.m. The meeting will mark<lb />the first time the two schools have lined up opposite of each other on the gridiron,<lb />while the trip to El Paso will mark the second-longest ever made by the Pirates,<lb />with 1,905 miles separating the two schools.<lb /><lb /> oThis is going to be a heck of a challenge, said ECU coach Skip Holtz, who is 15-15<lb />overall during his Pirate tenure. oUTEP has won three-straight and is playing on a high<lb />right now. They have really come into their own as an offensive football team.<lb /><lb /> oThey want to make every game a track meet. They don Tt want to play protective<lb />football but want to start scoring points right off of the bus. <lb /><lb />The Miners have won both of their C-USA games, scoring 96 total points<lb />against Tulsa and SMU. In both games, UTEP has overcome fourth quarter deficits<lb />of nine points of more to win. Against SMU, the Miners trailed 42-38 with 14:45<lb /><lb />left to play before rallying to win, 48-45, in overtime. Last week against Tulsa,<lb /><lb />the Miners were behind 37-28 with 14:33 left to play before battling back to win<lb />48-47 in thrilling fashion.<lb /><lb />__ UTEP coach Mike Price knows that while the Pirates might not look that great<lb />on paper, they are a dangerous team to play.<lb /><lb /> oStatistically, ECU doesn Tt look really great and their record isn Tt perfect, but<lb />boy are they capable, said Price at his Monday press conference. oThey are really<lb />good. They have a big strong quarterback, a big strong running back, a kickoff<lb />return guy, a huge defensive line and theyre very well coached. | think ECU is<lb />more physical than we are. Theyre bigger, stronger and faster. <lb /><lb />This weekend's game will not only mark the first meeting between ECU and UTEP, but<lb />will also mark the first time Holtz has coached against Price. According to Price however, the<lb />two know each other well.<lb /><lb /> oI knew Skip Holtz T dad [Lou Holtz]. didn Tt know Skip until recently, butin the last couple<lb />of [C-USA] golf tournaments I've paired up with him and it Ts because he Ts a really good golfer, T<lb />Price said. oIt's not how you play the game, it Ts how you pick your partners. <lb /><lb />The Pirates have been fighting the injury bug, mostly on defense, for the last<lb />couple of weeks. Multiple Pirates remain questionable for the game Saturday. "<lb /><lb /> oInjury-wise, Marcus Hands is still out with a shoulder injury, Holtz said on<lb />Monday. o1 am concerned about Jeremy Chambliss, Pierre Bell and Quentin Cotton.<lb />They will not be able to practice this week and are all questionable for this weekend.<lb />It throws a wrench into your defense when you take your two top linebackers and<lb />top backup out of the mix.<lb /><lb /> oOffensively, Josh Coffman is still out and we will play the wait and see game with<lb />Jonathan Williams and Willie Barton. Barton is more probable at this point. <lb /><lb />The Pirates will need all the help they can get on Saturday because the UTEP<lb />offense, as a surprise to many, is potent.<lb /><lb />' oStatistically, they are balanced on offense, averaging 190 yards on the ground<lb />and 230 throwing the ball, T said Holtz. oThey have really come into their own as<lb />an offensive football team. They are extremely productive in the red zone, about<lb />91 percent successful. <lb /><lb />UTEP Ts freshmen quarterback, Trevor Vittatoe, has been stellar as the Miners<lb />signal caller this year. On the season, Vittatoe has passed for 1,295 yards and 10<lb />touchdowns, coupled with only two interceptions. In the backfield, senior running<lb />back Marcus Williams has also been having a huge season. Williams has averaged<lb />121 rushing yards a game and has racked up 11 touchdowns.<lb /><lb />The key factor in the Miners T offense could be their receiving core. On the unit,<lb />the top three wide receivers are listed at 6-foot-5. Sophomore Jeff Moturi has seven<lb />touchdowns on the season while averaging 75 yards receiving a game. Senior Lorne<lb />Same has added a touchdown while their other big receiving threat, senior Joe West,<lb />has two touchdowns to his credit.<lb /><lb /> oThey make you spread the field and do some good things in space, T said Holtz<lb />about the Miners T offense. oThey are so good because they are athletic at wide receiver<lb />as they are all over six feet tall. Their quarterback can beat you with his feet and his<lb />arm so you can't focus on just the run or just the pass. __<lb /><lb />On the other side, ECU has found the perfect solution to its quarterback needs. Redshirt<lb />sophomore Rob Kass played phenomenal last week against UCF, completing 12-of-23 pass<lb /><lb />see PREVIEW page Al0<lb /><lb />ECU Coach Skip Holtz said earlier in the week<lb /><lb />KEYS IO<lb />THE GAME<lb /><lb />1. Stop the pass |<lb />The ECU secondary has struggled this season,<lb /><lb />allowing an average of 280 yards per game<lb />through the air. The last thing that this young<lb />secondary needs is to play a team like UTEP.<lb />The Miners have three receivers that are listed<lb />at 6-foot-5 and have accounted for 10 touch-<lb />downs. As an offensive unit, the Miners aver-<lb />age about 235 yards passing per game.<lb /><lb />2. Plug the holes<lb /><lb />that it Ts not so much in stopping someone as<lb />it is just plugging the holes. The ECU defense<lb />has been great at creating turnovers; in fact<lb />they are fifth in the nation in turnover margin<lb />Marcus Thomas, the Miners T running back, is<lb />averaging 121 yard: per game rushing so it is<lb />critical that the Pirates create some turnovers<lb />and limit Thomas T production. The Pirates must<lb />adopt the bend but not break the mentality that<lb />they have been succeeding with as of late.<lb /><lb />3. Come out firing<lb /><lb />The Pirates have come out sluggish in just<lb />about every game so far this season. ECU has<lb />been outscored in every quarter this season ex-<lb />cept the third quarter, where it holds a distinct<lb />80-45 advantage. This year, the Pirates have<lb />been outscored 44-14 in the first quarter, 73-<lb />47 in the second and 35-17 in the fourth. ECU<lb />must show up for the first half Saturday night<lb />or UTEP Ts upstart offense could put the Pirates<lb />in a big hole early in the game.<lb /><lb /></p>

The Mountaineers will<lb />travel from Boone to the Pin-<lb />eville, N.C. rink for all of their<lb />home games this year.<lb /><lb />The advantage did not pay<lb />off, as the Pirates thrashed<lb />ASU, 13-1.<lb /><lb />Avenging last year Ts Blue<lb />Ridge Hockey Conference<lb />Tournament loss was of par-<lb />ticular importance to ECU.<lb /><lb /> oThe boys had something<lb />to prove against App., said<lb />Cox. oI think from an emotional<lb />perspective, the beating that we<lb />put on them did a lot to bring<lb />this team together. <lb /><lb />Sophomore Chris Cesario<lb />and junior Jeremy Lang both<lb />tallied hat tricks.<lb /><lb /> oThere was a slap shot from<lb />the defenseman and I was just<lb />standing right there, said<lb />Cesario of his third goal. oThe<lb />goalie was down and I picked up<lb />the rebound and Just knocked it<lb />in for the hat trick. <lb /><lb />The Pirates did not light up<lb />the scoreboard quite as often in the<lb />third game against Georgia Tech,<lb />but the offense was still clicking.<lb /><lb />ECU out-shot the Yellow<lb />Jackets 76-20 in a 4-0 victory<lb />that. earned a second place<lb />tournament finish. The Pirates<lb />scored all four goals in the first<lb />two periods against a Georgia<lb />Tech team that finished last<lb />season ranked third in. the<lb />South (ACHA Division III).<lb /><lb />ECU benefited from<lb />another balanced scoring attack<lb />with Burns, Joe Colatuno, Sam<lb />Duehring and Lang finding<lb />the net.<lb /><lb />Cox cited defensemen<lb />Duehring and Donovan Dean<lb />for their exceptional play. Cap-<lb />tain Corey Fleitz also provided<lb />defensive depth, frequently<lb />moving back from the wing<lb />throughout the weekend.<lb /><lb />Freshman goaltender Matt<lb />Dalgetty played 60 minutes and<lb /><lb />stopped 21-of-21 shots against<lb />the Yellow Jackets as well.<lb /><lb />ECU looks forward to<lb />its home opener this Friday<lb />against former Blue. <lb />PAGE A10<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />THURSDAY OCTOBER 11, 2007<lb /><lb />PREVIEW continued from A8&amp;<lb /><lb />attempts for 201 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Patrick<lb />Pinkney got some reps as well, but it Ts been made clear that<lb />Kass is the guy except in certain situations where Pinkney Ts<lb />mobility is needed.<lb /><lb />Senior running back Chris Johnson has also<lb />exploded this season as an offensive force. Johnson<lb />ran the ball 23 times last week for 89 yards and<lb />two touchdowns, and also had five receptions for<lb />89 yards and a touchdown. If that wasn Tt enough,<lb />he also returned the second half opening kickoff 96<lb />yards for yet another score.<lb /><lb />With everything seemingly falling into place<lb />offensively coach Holtz couldn't be happier.<lb /><lb /> oWe really didn Tt have an identity offensively<lb />at the beginning of the season, it was like a land of<lb />misfit toys, T he said. oThere were a lot of questions<lb /><lb />* to be answered but we have stayed the course and<lb />gotten better fundamentally. I think the offense<lb />is beginning to gain confidence not only because<lb />we scored 52 points Saturday but because we are<lb />seeing that doing the fundamental things correctly<lb />actually works. <lb /><lb />The biggest concern for Holtz going into Satur-<lb />day was the traveling aspect of this week Ts long haul<lb />to El Paso. Coach Price doesn Tt feel all that sorry for<lb />the Pirates however.<lb /><lb /> o1 think the travel can make a difference for East<lb />Carolina. | think it Ts a horrible experience for them<lb />to have to go through.
