<p>TUESDAY OCTOBER 9, 2007<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />PAGE A4<lb /><lb />pinion<lb /><lb />Why you should<lb />90 to church<lb /><lb />Forget prayer<lb /><lb />YAZID FINN<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />I am surprised, Christians - I did not know<lb />you were much for Local Area Network (LAN)<lb />parties. Skimming the New York Times the<lb />other day, an article describing how to attract<lb />today Ts youth to church caught my attention. A<lb />recent gimmick among pastors in boosting their<lb />turnout: Halo. Now before I ponder whether the<lb />youth Ts interest in their faith was so poor to<lb />begin with that video games such as Halo had<lb />to be introduced, I have to ask. Can I get in on<lb />these tourneys?<lb /><lb />There are so many ways to spin this article;<lb />it is like churches are doing my work for me. I<lb />will. start with the most obvious, which is the<lb />fact that churches are using a popular first-<lb />person shooter game to lure children and teens<lb />to religion. I mean, was Left Behind so horribly<lb />unappealing graphics-wise you had to ask old<lb />Microsoft for help? At least with Left Behind<lb />you can explain to kids that you are not killing<lb />innocent people, per say. You are simply freeing<lb />their souls from Satan!<lb /><lb />Microsoft has stated in multiple instances<lb />that Halo is not a metaphor for real life and should<lb />not be made into a broad allusion to religion. It is<lb />simply a violent, addictive and competitive video<lb />game. So where does this leave us, except with the<lb />idea of attempting to pass off the Mature-rated<lb />shooter as religious togetherness.<lb /><lb />I have a few years of religious teaching under<lb />my belt, and while bribing kids with Skittles<lb />might be acceptable in grade school, I.am sure<lb />teachers and youth leaders can do better than<lb />Halo 3. Do not think this is a limited position of<lb />a single church. When organizations like Focus<lb />on the Family and the Institute on Religion and<lb />Democracy take interest in church practices, it<lb />means numerous groups are raising their voice.<lb /><lb />Then again, maybe the problem does not<lb />rest solely on the shoulders of the church, but<lb />with the parents as well. I think everyone would<lb /><lb />agree that if parents themselves are religious, ©<lb /><lb />they should not be using youth programs as<lb />the sole means for raising their children in the<lb />faith or as a means to babysit their kids for a<lb />few hours a week.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />A letter to the<lb />Pirate Nation<lb /><lb />Transporting the fans from the stadium to the coliseum<lb /><lb />JESSICA DUNLOW<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />I have to admit there is nothing better than<lb />sitting in the middle of the student section<lb />during our football games surrounded by hot,<lb />sweaty, screaming fans. The purple and gold<lb />cheer, singing the fight song, oStick It In, ? and<lb />my personal favorite, the staple fumble dance to<lb />Apache (a.k.a., oJump On It! ?).<lb /><lb />Although, we have to all admit it, when<lb />football season ends, the majority of our pirate<lb />nation moves on to cheer for other teams. Col-<lb />lege basketball is starting up in the coming<lb />weeks and most die-hard fans stick to the teams<lb />they pulled for before deciding to attend ECU,<lb />those with well-known and harvested basket-<lb />ball programs like Chapel Hill, N.C. State and<lb />Duke. Does anyone recall that our women Ts<lb />basketball team made it to the NCAA tourna-<lb />ment last year?<lb /><lb />It is understandable that football is the most<lb />supported sport at our school, because normally,<lb />we, the non-athletically active, just do not want<lb />to buy tickets to sports where we cannot tail-<lb />gate or scream at the top of our lungs for hours.<lb />Although baseball season does attract a larger<lb />crowd than the winter sports, admittedly.<lb /><lb />Let Ts do something about this. Let Ts learn<lb />to love our lesser-supported sports teams and<lb />then maybe our school will begin to as well. I<lb />find it somewhat unfair that the other varsity<lb />teams take a significantly far-back backseat to<lb />our football program (which I love, don Tt get me<lb />wrong). It just seems unfair to watch our bas-<lb />ketball teams play to somewhat empty coliseum<lb />seats, the baseball stadium only filled during<lb />games against the Tarheels and the Wolfpack,<lb />and I only read or hear about our women Ts soft-<lb />ball and soccer teams in this paper.<lb /><lb />Everyone received the email from Terry Hol-<lb />land about our fabulous school spirit, and how<lb />loud and long we cheer and support our Pirates.<lb />. [ just find it hard to believe that with all this<lb />Pirate spirit we exude that we somehow lose it<lb />over the period after football ends.<lb /><lb />Yes, I know our opinion writers harass you<lb />for wearing other schools T clothes and hats on<lb />our campus. I do not ask for that, I want every-<lb />one to support the Pirates wholeheartedly, bad<lb />seasons and all.<lb /><lb />One small step at a time, however. Starting<lb />with basketball season, let us show the stu-<lb />dents that play our varsity sports that we can<lb />take that loud rocking student section into the<lb />coliseum and the bleachers for every sport. If<lb />we truly bleed purple and gold, we will bleed it<lb />for every sport, no matter what team we grew<lb />up cheering for.<lb /><lb />I will see you in the stands.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />| took out a student loan to buy an RV!!<lb />It's painted purple and gold... feel free to<lb />honk if you see me driving around!<lb /><lb />{ Insert opinion here. }<lb /><lb />HE LIVES IN 4<lb />THE WHITE HOUSE!<lb />HE CLAIMS eat<lb /><lb />HE'S DEEPLY<lb />RELIGIOUS!<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. Why now?<lb /><lb />The burden of a three letter word<lb /><lb />MARGOT ROGERSON<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />It is hard to believe that in a world where man<lb />can travel to the moon, see the microscopic ele-<lb />ments of an atom and dive for hours to the great<lb />depths of the sea, anything should be unknown.<lb />It is hard to believe that things happen without<lb />an answer to the question, oWhy? ? But these<lb />things occur, and there are instances in which<lb /><lb />- one will never know owhy. ?<lb /><lb />One of these tragedies of life occurs when<lb />someone commits suicide. The family and friends<lb />are left with no other question. Sometimes there<lb />are guesses or hindsight of clarity, but in the end,<lb />one will never know for sure.<lb /><lb />To me, nothing is a greater tragedy than the<lb />death of a young person, a person who has not yet<lb />experienced enough of the world and recognized<lb />the amazing opportunities there are. When these<lb />opportunities are taken away from a person by<lb />some reason of illness or accident, there is no<lb />greater loss. But when the individual takes his or<lb />her own life, it seems the reason becomes more<lb />important than the how.<lb /><lb />I cannot even begin to imagine the weight of<lb /><lb />A guy I knew committed suicide recently. It<lb />was rumored, although I did not know it for sure,<lb />that he had tried to make several phone calls to<lb />friends and family before he did it. When I learned<lb />this, I could not help but feel a greater sadness for<lb />the burden I knew they were to carry. The question<lb />that will burden them for the rest of their lives is<lb />not, oWhy? ? but oWhat if? ?<lb /><lb />I think this question is quite possibly the worst<lb />burden of all life. There is no comparison to the<lb />hypothetical ifs and buts about a subject as serious<lb />as the absence of life.<lb /><lb />But it is not their fault to have missed the<lb />calls, to have missed the signs. No one was<lb />awake and no one was ready for that phone<lb />call. How will they come to the realization<lb />that it is not their fault and they did not have<lb />control? No matter how many people tell them<lb />that the fault does not lie with them, they must<lb />determine it for themselves.<lb /><lb />I think about how often circumstances such<lb />as this must occur. How many times does some-<lb />one reach out before committing the final act<lb />of ending one Ts life? And then I immediately<lb />think of the lives that will ask, oWhy? ? and<lb /> oWhat if? ?<lb /><lb />' This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />It Ts easy<lb />being green<lb /><lb />Forget Rudy Huxtable and that silly<lb />frog<lb /><lb />J.D. LEWIS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Don Tt get me wrong. I Tm no Green Peace ter-<lb />rorist out to blow up whaling ships; I Tm as worried<lb />about global warming as my father and grandfather<lb />were about global cooling in the T70 Ts and T40 Ts; and<lb />the earth is not my mother ... but it is my home.<lb />I think it is our duty to be good stewards of the<lb />earth, and there are some simple things we can<lb />do that require little time, effort, or expense, and<lb />are good for the environment at the same time.<lb /><lb />We use energy efficient light bulbs in our house.<lb />They Tre rather expensive " at least by low-income<lb />student standards " but they save us money on our<lb />utility bills and last longer than incandescent bulbs.<lb />Perhaps the easiest thing we can do for the envi-<lb />ronment is recycling. I became interested in this<lb />when I learned of the monthly fees on our utility<lb />bills whether we use our curbside recycling bins or<lb />not. The wife and I didn Tt even have a bin, so I called<lb />and had one delivered. It Ts a paltry amount, but if<lb />we're being charged at all, it Ts stupid not to use it.<lb /><lb />How many plastic drink bottles and steel<lb />food cans does your household go through in<lb />a week? We eat three meals a day and have<lb />something to drink with each one. It adds<lb />up. Why send all that perfectly good refuse<lb />to the landfill when it can be used again?<lb /><lb />We recycle our plastic grocery bags. We use<lb />some of them again for lunch bags and trashcan<lb />liners, and the rest we take to the recycling barrel,<lb />outside Food Lion. Perhaps I should check to make<lb />sure they really are recycling those bags. When I<lb />worked at Harris Supermarket, a now defunct com-<lb />pany once headquartered here in Greenville, we had<lb />a barrel that the store manager would have someone<lb />go empty into the dumpster whenever it was full.<lb /><lb /> If you're reading this, you have a newspaper to<lb />recycle. My bin contains almost as many newspa-<lb />pers as it does bottles. Cardboard can be recycled,<lb />as well as the reams of junk mail we all hate.<lb /><lb />At least once a week, our mailboxes are<lb />stuffed with the same coupons, circulars, and<lb />insurance ads that are stuck in our newspapers.<lb />Those of us with P.O. boxes get triple the aggra-<lb />vation. Throw in the daily credit card offers,<lb />and that Ts a whole lot of trees dying needlessly.<lb /><lb />Each time I check my box, I see the trashcans in<lb />the post office overflowing with junk mail, so I came<lb />up with a simple solution: requiring the U.S. Postal<lb />Service to provide recycling bins in their facilities.<lb /><lb />I wrote to Rep. G.K. Butterfield, Sens. Eliza-<lb />beth Dole and Richard Burr, and Postmaster<lb />General John Potter, as well as Sen. Daniel Akaka<lb />(D-HI) and Rep. Danny Davis (D-IL), who<lb />chair their respective chambers T subcommittees<lb />dealing with the USPS. I shared my idea with<lb />each and pointed out how this would be a good<lb />opportunity for the federal and local govern-<lb />ments to work together since most municipalities<lb />have some. sort of recycling program already.<lb /><lb />Three months later, I have only received<lb />a response " if you could call it that " from<lb />Dole. She never once mentioned my issue, but<lb />did thank me three times for sharing my con-<lb />cerns. I didn Tt expect much from her or Burr,<lb />though any acknowledgement is better than none.<lb /><lb />I Tm really disappointed in the three Democrats,<lb />especially Butterfield. My own representative<lb /> " the first line of defense, so to speak " should<lb />have the gumption to respond in a timely manner.<lb />I thought any green issue drew Democrats like an<lb />outhouse draws flies.<lb /><lb />I voted for Dole, Burr, and Butterfield, and<lb />they can count on my remembering their shoddy<lb />constituent service when they come up for reelec-<lb />tion. But, even without the help of the government,<lb />I can still have an impact on the environment in<lb />my own small way.<lb /><lb />Go thou and do likewise.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Kimberly Bellamy Rachel King<lb />News Editor Opinion Editor<lb />Greg Katski Ronnie Woodward<lb /><lb />Sports Editor Asst.
