<lb />PAGE A4<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN * NEWS<lb /><lb />Maritime studies students<lb /><lb />in Hawaii for a sunken ship |<lb /><lb />Students receive credit hours for<lb />research trip<lb /><lb />ALYCIA WENDT<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />A group of ECU maritime studies faculty and<lb />students, participating in the field school program<lb />of nautical archaeology, are in Hawaii for a month<lb />studying the sunken ship, Ivanhoe.<lb /><lb />The students who are participating in this<lb />group can earn six credit hours for being in<lb />Hawaii for a month by doing dives and trying to<lb />solve the mystery of the Ivanhoe.<lb /><lb />The Ivanhoe was built in Scotland in 1868.<lb />This ship was used as an English emigrant ship,<lb />carrying passengers to Australia.<lb /><lb />Later, the ship became a trade vessel and trav-<lb />eled other places as well.<lb /><lb />In December of 1915, the ship sunk on the<lb />coast of Kauai; no one knows exactly what brought<lb />the ship down. The cargo the ship was carrying<lb />is also a mystery.<lb /><lb />There was documentation of the ship Ts earlier<lb />life but there was not much of a record of its last<lb />ten years.<lb /><lb />The group in Hawaii is working to figure out<lb />all the unanswered questions about the ship Ts life<lb />before it crashed and sunk in Kauai.<lb /><lb /> oMy expectations are that the students will<lb />fine-tune their skills in recording underwater<lb />sites and also some that are above water, said<lb />Larry Babits, maritime studies professor.<lb /><lb />This field school project required a $40,000<lb />grant that Nathan Richards, ECU maritime stud-<lb />ies professor and project leader, received from<lb />ECU Ts research development grant program.<lb /><lb />The students are all graduate students in<lb />maritime studies and have a concentration in<lb />underwater archaeology.<lb /><lb />According to Babits, the students had a very<lb />thorough process to endure in order to be selected<lb />as a member of the group.<lb /><lb />First, the students had to become scientific<lb />divers. They also had to attend a field school in the<lb />summer and attend required classroom courses.<lb /><lb /> oEach of the steps has requirements that must<lb /><lb />Residents can choose from several spaciously designed floor plans.<lb />One, two, and three bedroom floorplans available.<lb /><lb />; Students and conduct reseach to help recover information about sunken ship, Ivanhoe.<lb /><lb />be met. You have to pass the courses, pass the<lb />scientific diver training and then make it through<lb />the summer field school. It is not for just anyone, <lb />Babits said.<lb /><lb />Participating in this project along with Babits<lb />is: Nathan Richards Ph.D., Bradley Rodgers Ph.D.,<lb />Calvin Mires, Steve Sellers, Mike Dermody, Kevin<lb />Wells, Joe Hoyt, Mellissa Ashmore, Nadine Kopp,<lb />Jeremy Eamick, Annie Tock, Matt De Felice, Kelly<lb />Gleason Ph.D., Hans Van Tilburg Ph.D., Tane<lb /><lb />. Casserley and Amy Leuchtmann.:<lb /><lb /> oThe primary investigator, Nathan Richards,<lb />will obtain a wealth of data about iron hulled<lb />ships that he can work into his study of how they<lb />were abandoned in both the Pacific and Atlantic<lb />Oceans, Babits said.<lb /><lb />The group left for Hawaii on Sept. 4. All of<lb />their gear was shipped months in advance to the<lb />island. The other pieces of equipment were split<lb />up and taken on the plane as carry-on items for<lb />the group members.<lb /><lb />When the group arrived in Hawaii, they went<lb />to the State Library of Hawaii to look through<lb />local newspapers that were not available to them<lb />in North Carolina.<lb /><lb />This gave the group more knowledge on their<lb />assignment.<lb /><lb /> oAs always, research leads to more research<lb />and these leads will send us again on the hunt for<lb />clues to the widespread influence of the shipwreck<lb />upon the many people and places interwoven into<lb />the story of its life, loss and legacy, T Richards said<lb />in his online blog for the study. .<lb /><lb />The maritime studies program at ECU is<lb />housed in the Eller House in Greenville. They<lb />offer a master Ts degree in maritime history and<lb />nautical archaeology.<lb /><lb />The students are involved in classroom lec-<lb />tures and hands-on field projects; they also get<lb />experience in the field by doing internships.<lb /><lb /> oWhen I first found out about this study<lb />experience, I was in shock that ECU opens this<lb />opportunity to students to study off campus and<lb />not only at other colleges or universities, said<lb />sophomore Rich Shafer.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2007<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Uptown Food Samples *<lb /><lb />iia<lb /><lb />wey TL<lb /><lb />look. play. eat. shop. relax.<lb /><lb />WACHOVIA. wowuplowngreenville.com<lb /><lb />Pe Carolina<lb /><lb />ALUMNI ASSOCIATION<lb /><lb />ee suiddenlink: SELECT<lb /><lb />PEPSI<lb />ne<lb /><lb />Pettis<lb />SEVEN BY DESIGN<lb /><lb />RIPPLE<lb />Cina<lb /><lb />APARTMENT HOMES FEATURE:<lb />Free Basic Cable * Free Water &amp; Sewer * Monitored Intrusion Alarms High Speed Internet Capabilities<lb />Fire Sprinkler System ¢ Ceiling Fans * Custom Blinds ¢ Breakfast Bar * Open Spacious Closets<lb />9 Ceilings Available * Washer &amp; Dryer Connections * Refrigerator with Icemaker * Self-Cleaning Ovens<lb />Garbage Disposal and Dishwasher * Energy Efficient Heating &amp; Air * Built-in Microwave<lb />Patios Available ¢ Fully Accessible Units Available * 2 Business Centers 2 Fitness Centers<lb />3 Dog Runs * 2 Sparkling Swimming Pools ¢ Billiard Room * Tennis Court<lb /><lb />Fine Apartment Homes for<lb />Upperclass and Graduate Students<lb />2792 Stantonsburg Re, Greenville, NC 27834<lb /><lb />Phone 252-/o/-Q079, Fax 252.7O70475<lb /><lb />email leasingéwatertordnc.com<lb />www waterfordplaceapartmenthomes.com<lb /><lb /></p>

<lb />O'Reilly was<lb />fired?<lb /><lb />Maybe in a parallel universe<lb /><lb />YAZID FINN<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />What is the difference between a shock<lb />Jock known as Don Imus and right-wing conser-<lb />vative named Bill O TReilly? Some may still be<lb />wondering after Bill Ts comments on his own radio<lb />program only weeks ago. For those are out of<lb />the loop, Bill O TReilly apparently discovered that<lb />African Americans can act civilized and restrain<lb />themselves long enough to enjoy a sit-down meal.<lb />During a dinner with Al Sharpton at Harlem Ts<lb />Slyvia Ts, O TReilly remarked later on the air how<lb />flabbergasted he was during the evening.<lb /><lb />O'Reilly was awestruck at the fact that<lb />even while the restaurant goers were predomi-<lb />nantly black, everyone was so well behaved! Why<lb />Bill said that he could have just as well been sitting<lb />in an Italian restaurant in an all-white suburb T<lb />because not a single patron was shouting oM-F-er,<lb />I want more iced tea. T Heaven forbid Sharpton and<lb />O TReilly went to an Eamonns that evening or I<lb />could see the following day Ts headlines: Sharpton<lb />smears Irish Catholics as drunks.<lb /><lb />So where is the inquisition that a few may<lb />be expecting and why are not hordes of protesters<lb />calling for Bill Ts resignation? Is it because ESPN<lb />was not covering the remarks that this story went<lb />unheard? Is it because two million people tune into<lb />the O TReilly Factor while only a couple thousand<lb />listened to Imus that advertisers are not pulling<lb />out? Is it just because a story like this has already<lb />been done that no one cares?<lb /><lb />Well maybe Fox is just skipping to the<lb />conclusion of matters. With Imus getting job offers<lb />left and right, maybe Fox does not want to lose<lb />one of their highest rated news commentators. So<lb />maybe in a way I am glad no one is causing flak<lb />over the matter. Sure Anderson Cooper is fun, and<lb />Glenn Beck says something dumb now and again,<lb />but O TReilly is Fox News. He could easily be run<lb />24 hours a day on his own station and still attract<lb />more viewers than MSNBC and CNN combined<lb />for simply shouting at his guests.<lb /><lb />So carry on, East Carolina. You keep up<lb />the good fight on lowering the drinking age for<lb />your clubbing and I will keep enjoying my favorite<lb />news at 8.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeasicarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Sleeping with<lb />the enemy?<lb /><lb />Awareness is key<lb /><lb />SARAH CAMPBELL<lb />EDITOR-IN-CHIEF<lb /><lb />A Ts a women Ts studies minor the past several<lb />years have allowed me to take a number of courses<lb />related directly to women and society. A theme that<lb />seems to reoccur in almost every class is the topic of<lb />domestic violence. Since hearing about the victims<lb />of domestic violence, I have been unable to silence<lb />the thoughts that run through my mind. I can still<lb />hear their voices describing how the person they<lb />loved most in the world beat them relentlessly.<lb />The menacing presence of domestic violence has<lb />become so prevalent in our society that many no<lb />longer view it as a substantial threat.<lb /><lb />The Center for Disease Control considers<lb />domestic violence an epidemic in the United States.<lb />Every nine seconds a women is beaten, an increase<lb />from 12 seconds just a few short years ago. One<lb />has to wonder why this epidemic is so rampant<lb />in a modernized society and what is being done<lb />to eliminate it. Domestic violence is manifesting<lb />faster than anyone can comprehend the seriousness<lb />of the matter.<lb /><lb />According to the National Coalition Against<lb />Domestic Violence, domestic violence is defined<lb />by the following definition:<lb /><lb /> oDomestic violence is the willful intimida-<lb />tion, assault, battery, sexual assault or other<lb />abusive behavior perpetrated by an intimate<lb />partner against another. It is an epidemic affect-<lb />ing Americans in all communities, regardless of<lb />age, economic status, race, religion, nationality or<lb />education background. <lb /><lb />In an effort to demonstrate just how prominent<lb />domestic violence is, I will shed light on some star-<lb />tling statistics. In her lifetime one in four women -<lb />will be a victim of domestic violence. In North<lb />Carolina last year, 78 murders occurred due to<lb />domestic violence. The cost of domestic violence<lb />is $67 billion a year worldwide. 46 percent of men<lb />who beat their wives also beat their children.<lb /><lb />The Family Violence Center located in<lb />Greenville provides local students and community<lb />members with a safe haven in the event that they<lb />may need to escape from intimate abuse. The center<lb />will help relocate Victims to safe places and provide<lb />them with the financial support they need until<lb />they are stable again.<lb /><lb />The domestic violence epidemic continues<lb />to plague the lives of thousands each year. In an<lb />effort to eliminate it, people are encouraged to<lb />contact members of Congress and urge them to<lb />support domestic violence funding through the<lb />Violence Against Women Act. Volunteering time<lb />and compassion to victims is another great way to<lb />a proactive solution. Awareness is also the number<lb />one way to decrease the threat of domestic violence.<lb />Through awareness, empathy is gained; in the face<lb />of empathy, no one can deny the voice of a victim.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />{ Insert opinion here. }<lb /><lb />%<lb /><lb />THURSDAY OCTOBER 4, 2007<lb /><lb />pace A5<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />Looking for a-strong male that will be able<lb />to maintain control of drunk girls that need<lb />to be on leashes.<lb /><lb />As Photo Editor of TEC, | feel the best way to convey to our readers my thoughts and<lb /><lb />feelings of todays happenings is through art, as | do every day. I got to the<lb />restaurant a couple of minutes before 10 p.m.; my<lb />fiancé and friends were already in the restaurant.<lb />When I went up to the door, an Olive Garden<lb />employee was sitting outside talking on her cell<lb />phone. I went to the door to open it and discovered<lb />it was locked.<lb /><lb />_ When [asked her if she could let me in, she said<lb />the doors were locked for the night and that not<lb />even she was allowed back in. I called my fiancé<lb />in the restaurant and he quickly informed the man-<lb />ager that I was outside waiting to be let in.<lb /><lb />He told my fiancé that there was absolutely no<lb />way that I could be let in the restaurant. My fiancé<lb />told the manager that I wasn Tt going to order food,<lb />I was just going to sit with the group to talk. Still,<lb />I was forbidden to enter the Olive Garden.<lb /><lb />Of course I understood since I used to work<lb />at a restaurant, but when an employee walked<lb />out and back into the restaurant soon after they<lb />barred my entrance, I became a little skeptical<lb />about their policy.<lb /><lb />. This experience got me thinking about all the<lb />times that I have received less than satisfactory<lb />service from waiters and waitresses (and manag-<lb />ers) in Greenville.<lb /><lb />Although I Tm not the richest person in the<lb />world, I like to tip people who serve me well<lb />because I know what it Ts like to work for tips. IfI<lb />receive good service, I tip well.<lb /><lb />Still, I have gone to restaurants all over the<lb />city and seen the disappointed faces of waiters<lb />and waitresses when they realized I was a college<lb />student.<lb /><lb />Most of the time people think of stereotyping<lb />and prejudice in terms of race, color or ethnicity,<lb />but what about the stereotypes placed on college<lb />students? s<lb /><lb />I have personally been labeled as loud, poor,<lb />obnoxious, thieving, disrespectful, a drunk...and<lb />I have felt the effects of these generalities. My<lb />question is, why?<lb /><lb />Are theré really so many college students who<lb />don Tt tip, aren Tt respectful and so obnoxious that<lb />we all deserve sub-par treatment?<lb /><lb />I find it hard to believe that most college stu-<lb />dents don Tt know what it feels like to work for tips.<lb />And I find it even harder to believe that when col-<lb />lege students go out to eat to a sit-down restaurant<lb />they are not aware that a tip is required.<lb /><lb />If they have enough money to go sit down to<lb />eat, then they have enough money to tip. -<lb /><lb />Still, I have gone to the same restaurant with<lb />my parents (and had the same waiter/waitress) and<lb />received wonderful treatment and service, whilé<lb />when I visited the restaurant before I had to wait<lb />15 minutes for a drink refill. <lb /><lb />I Tm not saying that all waiters or waitresses<lb />in Greenville treat college students differently.<lb />because they are college students, but I have had<lb />some pretty terrible experiences here in good ole<lb /> G-Vegas. T<lb /><lb />I can understand the mindset of restaurant<lb />servers who have been stiffed one or more times by.<lb />college students, but not all of us do that.<lb /><lb />So the question remains: did the manager at<lb />Olive Garden lie to me when he said I was not<lb />allowed into the restaurant? Or did he see my oEast<lb />Carolina Girls T-shirt and immediately label me<lb />as a non-tipping college student?<lb /><lb />I can guarantee that a lot of waiters and wait-<lb />resses in Greenville have missed out on some good<lb />money because they have treated me poorly.<lb /><lb />What's so ironic about this whole stereotyping<lb />thing is that many restaurant servers are college<lb />students themselves and still insist on the bad<lb />treatment of their peers. s<lb /><lb />I can also say that they have missed out on<lb />tips because of their attitudes towards college<lb />students.<lb /><lb />For now, I'll keep that extra money I would usé<lb />to tip with to myself.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at features@theeastcaro-.<lb /><lb />linian.com.<lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Kimberly Bellamy Rachel King<lb />News Editor Opinion Editor<lb />Greg Katski Ronnie Woodward<lb /><lb />Sports Editor Asst. Likewise, if your<lb />fourth linebacker is better than<lb />your fourth defensive lineman,<lb />you need to play more of the<lb />three-down set. <lb /><lb />The Pirates have survived<lb />and advanced through the first<lb />five games of their brutal sched-<lb />ule and getting back to.500 is<lb />top priority for ECU if they<lb />hope to stay in the conference<lb />race and in the picture for z<lb />postseason bowl.<lb /><lb /> oWithout a doubt it Ts<lb />extremely important [ get-<lb />ting back to 500], especially<lb />against a conference foe like<lb />UCE, whom we've traded wins<lb />and losses with them the last<lb />two years, said Kass. oWe<lb />really feel like if they come in<lb />here, they might be the favorite,<lb />but if we knock them off then<lb />were front runners in the con-<lb />_ ference right away.<lb /><lb />And with that the Pirates<lb />have shed new hope on a season<lb />that seemed lost just two week-<lb />ends ago.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />=<lb /><lb />_ O'LEARY HOLTZ<lb /><lb /> oThis game will be a heck of a<lb />challenge for us, but our players<lb />are excited to get back in front of<lb />our home fans in this atmosphere. <lb /><lb /> oOther than that [mistakes last<lb /><lb />business. They are<lb />currently tied with the baseball<lb /><lb />team, which has also had 25 con-Q |<lb /><lb />secutive winning seasons.<lb /><lb />Kobe is very enthusiastic<lb />about the depth and talent of this<lb />year Ts team.<lb /><lb /> oThe [men Ts] freshman class<lb />was one of the largest and most<lb />talented we Tve ever brought<lb />in here at East Carolina, said<lb />Kobe. oThey're all extremely<lb /><lb />talented and these guys will.<lb /><lb />have an immediate impact on the<lb />team.
