<lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />Where did all of<lb />you come from?<lb /><lb />My take on admissions<lb /><lb />YAZID FINN<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Normally I do not stray from my set opinion<lb />topics: religious interests, U.S. foreign policy or<lb />diversity on campus, as sometimes, I really don Tt<lb />know what to talk about. Well currently diversity<lb />is thriving with Hate Week, the CIA is a terrorist<lb />organization as labeled by Iran and I have not seen<lb />Brother Micah in a few weeks. Here is my attempt<lb />at a more campus centered article.<lb /><lb />How about that influx of freshmen enrolled<lb />at ECU? If you have been living under a rock and<lb />still wonder why the Subway lines have become<lb />longer, here is the answer. An amazing number of<lb />Just over 4,000 first-year students have joined our<lb />school, even while ECU has publically stated they<lb />did not change the admission standards. Maybe<lb />times have changed and kids these days want to<lb />attend our classes for the prestigious degree instead<lb />of alcoholism!<lb /><lb />Problems have arisen with our new figures<lb /><lb />in all respects. Minor instances have been seen T<lb /><lb />in cases of ECU Football tickets or parking on<lb />campus, to the.other side of the spectrum in regards<lb />to overcrowding in classes or the over booking of<lb />freshmen to live on campus. I am by no means fault-<lb />ing Campus Living in regards to the problems they<lb />have faced this year, as I realize they are doing their<lb />best to work with the resources they have.<lb /><lb />I am not inclined to believe ECU Ts statement<lb />in regards to our growing numbers as simply a<lb />chance happening. Last year I had the chance to sit<lb />down with a high ranking facility member of this<lb />university, and our conversation turned to enroll-<lb />ment. NCSU ranks first in the state with about<lb />30,000 students, UNC Chapel Hill a close second<lb />with 27,000 students. East Carolina at the time<lb /><lb />had figures listing roughly 24,000 undergraduate .<lb /><lb />and graduate students. These numbers of course<lb />are pretty impressive for those with investments<lb />in the college.<lb /><lb />UNC Charlotte however, threatened our<lb />third place holdings, with their 22,000 students<lb />last year and a projected increase that would shift<lb />East Carolina to fourth place. If I were a member<lb />of this university Ts Board of Trustees, this would<lb />not be a pleasing thought. That is why when I hear<lb />ECU boasting of its olargest enrollment yet, T I<lb />begin to wonder.<lb /><lb />Whose interests did the university have in mind<lb />during admissions this year: The 25,000 students<lb />now attending our school or twelve members of a<lb />council we never see?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Getting involved<lb /><lb />The importance of participation on<lb />campus<lb /><lb />JESSICA DUNLOW<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />There is a large population of students on<lb />campus that came to ECU without knowing<lb />more than two people here. Granted, there<lb />are many who are from Greenville, and may<lb />have joined dozens of their former classmates<lb />here in Pirate Country.. No matter how many<lb />people you know coming into college, you are<lb />going to leave knowing so many more and<lb />you are going to have so many experiences<lb />that will influence who you are and who you<lb />become.<lb /><lb />This is probably the most. overly need<lb />cliché in the history of college books, movies<lb />and stories. However, it is an important<lb />thing to remember. There are so many ways<lb />to become part of ECU and not just attend<lb />college here. For instance, if you are living<lb />on campus, this is the best way to meet new<lb />people. Even just saying ohey ? in the bath-<lb />room is a great way to start.<lb /><lb />Stephen Shaheen, an ECU Ambassador,<lb />EC Scholar, and pre-med senior thinks that,<lb /> oOn campus involvement, through clubs and<lb /> T other university-related activities, is essential<lb />to creating a well balanced personality and<lb />resume. In addition, it gives great opportuni-<lb />ties to make new friends, pick up new hobbies,<lb />and expand your horizons, both academically<lb />and socially. ?<lb /><lb />I know how corny this all sounds, but<lb />there are so many ways to get involved. The<lb />ECU Greek system is amazing; there are even<lb />Greek organizations within specific majors!<lb />You can get involved through Healthy Pirates;<lb />an organization geared toward health and<lb />nutrition majors, but is open for everyone.<lb />Club sports are a great way to share a love<lb />for soccer, softball, basketball, lacrosse and<lb />many more.<lb /><lb />There are university organizations like<lb />the Student Government Association that can<lb />cultivate leadership skills and business savvy.<lb />The ECU Ambassadors offer chances to work<lb />within the football program and alumni pro-<lb />- grams. ECU Admissions offer tour guide<lb />positions, so if you want a chance to grow<lb />in your school spirit, take the opportunity<lb />to introduce interested Baath schoolers to the<lb />Pirate Nation.<lb /><lb />Graduate programs and employers look at<lb />extra-curricular activities and since we all<lb />have to head out into the big bad world in the<lb />somewhat near future; it is never too early or<lb />late to start.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />WHEN HE MADE<lb />HIS APPEARANCE<lb />AT COLUMBIA<lb /><lb />UNIVERSITY, WE<lb /><lb />PRESIDENT<lb />IRAN!<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />TUESDAY OCTOBER 2, 2007<lb /><lb />PAGE A4<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />Ever since | turned 21 last week, | feel<lb />like when | walk on campus everyone<lb />is staring at me and knows what | did.<lb /><lb />{ Think for yourself. }<lb /><lb />HOW CAN A GUY<lb />OUT OF<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. LEWIS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />I Tve read a lot of Rants in this newspaper about<lb />the amount of noise, clutter and general inconve-<lb />nience from all the construction going on around<lb />campus. I too have muttered under my breath<lb />about having to walk out of my way to get around<lb />a construction barrier...but I wonder how many of<lb />us, when were sitting in our nice air-conditioned<lb />classrooms and complaining about all the noise<lb />the guys working on the roof are making, even<lb />give a thought to how those guys feels up there<lb />in 90-plus degree heat, just working hard, trying<lb />to keep that roof from crashing in on our heads<lb />someday. Probably not that many.<lb /><lb />From changing light bulbs, emptying trashcans<lb />and unstopping toilets to digging ditches, laying<lb />pipe and putting new roofs on buildings, the men<lb />and women of Facilities Services keep this school<lb />running and we just take them for granted.<lb /><lb />There isn Tt a fellow on this campus, myself<lb />included, who hasn't experienced poor aim in the<lb />bathroom from time to time (I hope this isn Tt an<lb /><lb />issue for the ladies). We don Tt have the where-<lb />withal to wrap a wad of toilet paper around our<lb />hand and wipe it up, and thanks to those too lazy<lb /><lb />to even consider that to begin with, it Ts probably .<lb />because there Ts evidence another lousy shot was,<lb /><lb />there before us. We just correctly assume some-<lb />one is going to come along behind us and clean<lb />up our filth.<lb /><lb />In the wintertime after a freezing rain, it Ts not<lb />the salt fairies that come along to clean off the<lb />sidewalks and steps so we don Tt bruise our buns...<lb />or worse. A human being was out there in the<lb />freezing cold, breaking his back to keep us from<lb /><lb />_ breaking ours.<lb /><lb />We need to think about these things the next<lb />time we're griping. "<lb /><lb />The men and women of Facilities Services<lb />provide a clean environment for us around our<lb />campus and in our buildings; they keep us cool<lb />when it Ts hot out and warm when it Ts cold; they<lb />keep us safe from faulty wiring, busted pipes and<lb />falling plaster.<lb /><lb />Is it too much to ask to say thanks? I Tm sure<lb />they don Tt expect it, but I bet they'd appreciate<lb />hearing it once in a while instead of a lot of com-<lb />plaining.<lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />One nation,<lb />under debt<lb /><lb />Living on credit: The American way<lb /><lb />JUSTIN SUMMERS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />For the first time in almost a year, I made siz-<lb />able payments toward my credit card bill, and it Ts<lb />an experience I'd like to share. You see it all began<lb />last year around the beginning of the semester.<lb />Like you I was a poor college student. trying to<lb />pay for books, and like every other college student<lb />who has a name and a social security number, I was<lb />offered a line of credit. oWow, ? I thought, oSome-<lb />one wants to give me free money, and all I have to<lb />do is pay them back. ? Sure, I thought I'd try this<lb />novel thing; after all this is America and everyone<lb />is living off credit.<lb /><lb />My credit card experience was going great;<lb />I was spending money erratically, making the<lb />minimum payments and buying things I never<lb />would have if I had used cash. However, it wasn Tt<lb />long before I realized what I had gotten myself<lb />into. You see, about four payment periods in, I<lb />defaulted on my 0% agreed interest rate due to<lb />a late payment, and Bank of America slapped<lb />me with an impossibly high 33% interest rate.<lb />Needless to say, after this I was paying far too<lb />much a month in interest, and honesty it was<lb />getting hard to sleep. By simply knocking off the<lb />minimum each month and never really making<lb />any substantial difference on the bottom line, I<lb />managed to stay in debt for over a year. This year<lb />though, I finally had the will and the way to just<lb />pay it all off. My friends, it was a quasi-liberat-<lb />ing experience.<lb /><lb />After leaving the bank with much lighter<lb />pockets, my conscience felt a little lightér<lb />as well; however, the taste in my mouth was<lb />still unpleasant. Who could feel good about<lb />giving their hard-earned money to a bank<lb />that charges $30 for overcharging 50 cents,<lb />or defaults to 33% interest for paying a bill<lb />a day late? My relatively short time in debt<lb />has made me think: how many other people<lb />were in.my shoes? How many Americans are<lb />paying off the minimum and missing sleep<lb />because of it?<lb /><lb />After looking into it a little, the numbers I<lb />found were quite shocking. According to some<lb />estimates, the average American is $8000 in<lb />debt. 78% of college students have at least<lb />one credit card and 32% of them have four or<lb />more. Now, it is also stated that the majority<lb />of college students use their cards responsibly<lb />and make payments on time and often carry<lb />no balance. However, I think it is safe to say<lb />that there is a pretty substantial percentage of<lb />college students who aren Tt doing so and are<lb />probably majoring in credit card debt.<lb /><lb />Now a lot of people say that bad credit is<lb />better than no credit at all, and this may be<lb />true. I think that in this day and age estab-<lb />lishing some credit is a necessary thing, just<lb />do so carefully and know the consequences.<lb />I Tm not much for giving advice on topics I<lb />admittedly could use help on myself, so I'll<lb />let someone else do it. | saw a bumper sticker<lb />somewhere that said it quite right, and I think<lb />it would be a suitable line to go out on; oDebt<lb />is normal, be weird. ?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />.
