Crossing (NCC) and<lb />The Exchange have both added<lb />more buses to their routes.<lb /><lb />After opening Phase II of the<lb />apartment complex, NCC added<lb />two more buses to their route<lb />making it possible for students<lb />to catch a bus to campus every<lb />10 minutes.<lb /><lb />On Sept. 17, The Exchange<lb /><lb />also added another bus after<lb />more than 20 students were left<lb />behind due to overcrowding.<lb /> oWe contract with the large<lb />apartment Tcomplexes to provide<lb />transportation, Davidson said.<lb /> oWe send them a recommen-<lb />dation based on their size and the<lb />data that we have. The apartment<lb />complex then decides what size<lb /><lb />_ bus they want to have and how<lb /><lb />many busses they want depend-<lb />ing on their budget and their<lb />expectations for transportation. <lb /><lb />Each apartment complex<lb />that uses the ECU bus system<lb />pays 65 percent of the operat-<lb />ing costs, which works out to<lb />be about $28,000 a semester,<lb />depending on the cost of fuel and<lb />how many hours of bus service<lb />the complex has.<lb /><lb />Since the complexes have<lb />added more buses to their routes,<lb />many students have seen an<lb />improvement in the bus service<lb />and a decline in overcrowding.<lb /><lb /> oIt has gotten a lot better<lb />recently but sometimes the bus<lb />is still pretty full in the morn-<lb />ing, said Kerry Smyth, resident<lb />at NCC.<lb /><lb /> oT Tve had to stand a few times<lb />on my way to class but it has defi-<lb />nitely improved now that a bus<lb />comes every 10 minutes. <lb /><lb />_ The park and ride shuttles<lb />to Minges Coliseum and Curry<lb />Court have both extended their<lb />hours to serve students better<lb />as well.<lb /><lb />These shuttles now run a half<lb />hour longer, with the last bus<lb />leaving the JY. Joyner Library at<lb />7 p.m. Monday through Friday.<lb /><lb /> oThis was done to marry the<lb />Safe Ride service with the bus<lb />service, Davidson said.<lb /><lb /> oSafe Ride wasn Tt starting<lb />until 7 p.m. and the bus service<lb />was ending at 6:30 p.m. We had<lb />a lot of people calling during<lb />that half hour time frame and<lb />asking how to get back to their<lb /><lb />car at Minges. We received a lot<lb />of complaints so we decided to<lb /><lb />extend the hours to fill that gap. °<lb /><lb />Within the next two<lb />weeks, students will also<lb />experience several changes<lb />to the Safe Ride service.<lb /><lb />Safe Ride will no longer be<lb />operated by the ECU Police<lb />under their Campus Safety Divi-<lb />sion, but will now be moved back<lb />into the control of ECU Transit.<lb /><lb />The ECUSTA will add more<lb /><lb />vehicles to the service during<lb /><lb />. peak times, but they plan to keep<lb /><lb />the hours of operation the same.<lb /><lb />Once ECU Transit begins<lb />operating Safe Ride, several<lb />changes will be made to the<lb />rules and policies of the service.<lb /><lb />Under the new policies, stu-<lb />dents will no longer be able to<lb />use Safe Ride to travel from off<lb />campus to off-campus destinations.<lb /><lb />see BUS ROUTES page A2<lb /><lb />The inconvenience of overcrowding on buses has been brought to the attention of ECU Transit for soulutions.<lb /><lb />Voyages of the Discovery lecture<lb />series features prominent speakers<lb /><lb />- Speakers discuss arts<lb /><lb />and sciences<lb /><lb />JENNIFER SOARES<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />Voyages of the Discovery<lb />lecture series, sponsored by the<lb />Thomas Harriot College of Arts<lb />and Sciences, will begin today<lb />at 7 p.m.<lb /><lb />The purpose of these lec-<lb />tures is to deliver more informa-<lb />tion on the history of Eastern<lb />North Carolina and touch on the<lb />origination of modern science for<lb />the faculty and students of the<lb />Thomas Harriot College.<lb /><lb />John Tucker, director of the<lb />Voyages of Discoveries lecture<lb />series, stated that the series is<lb />about the differences between<lb />arts and sciences of the college.<lb /><lb />The speakers were asked to<lb />the campus of ECU to deliver lec-<lb />tures about Harriot Ts life, work<lb />and the impact he made.<lb /><lb />The first lecture will fea-<lb />ture Peter White, professor<lb />of botany at UNC-Chapel<lb />Hill and director of the North<lb />Carolina Botanical Gardens.<lb /><lb />White Ts lecture is called,<lb /> oFrom the Appalachians to the<lb />Coastal Plain: North Carolina Ts<lb />Wildflowers and Ecology. <lb /><lb /> oThis lecture is about natural<lb />history of North Carolina and<lb />all of the exciting discoveries of<lb />plants and animals of the state, <lb />White said.<lb /><lb />He will be featuring the<lb />Venus Fly Trap, which can only<lb />found in 11 counties in North and<lb />South Carolina. ©<lb /><lb />The lecture will be in room<lb />OC-307 of the Science &amp; Tech-<lb />nology Building.<lb /><lb />These lectures also include<lb /><lb />©<lb />&amp;<lb />Ko!<lb />£<lb /><lb />=<lb />ES]<lb />=<lb /><lb />8<lb />oO<lb /><lb />Inaugural Lecture<lb /><lb />September 27, 2007 7:00 p.m.<lb />Science and Technology Building, OC-307<lb /><lb />Peter White, Ph D.<lb /><lb />Directory, North Carolina Botanical Gardens<lb /><lb />Professor of Botany, UNC-Chapel Hill<lb /> oFrom the Appalachians to the Coastal Plain:<lb /><lb />North Carolina Ts Wildflowers and Ecology <lb /><lb />the Premier Lecture by Dr. Rich-<lb />ard Leakey, a world-renowned<lb />paleoanthropologist, archaeolo-<lb />gist and conservationist. <p>Ion.<lb /><lb />{ Think for yourself: }<lb /><lb />Dear football<lb /><lb />fans...<lb /><lb />A state of mind or a state of being?<lb /><lb />JESSICA DUNLOW<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Football season has always been a favorite of<lb />mine. Granted, I was never too excited about col-<lb />lege football until I finally arrived tat ECU, which<lb />has been referred to as a football-driven school.<lb />Apparently I have been missing out.<lb /><lb />NFL fans are fair-weather sometimes (minus<lb />those Steelers and Eagles fans, who are extremely<lb />die-hard), meaning, people sort of jump on the<lb />bandwagon for whichever teams make it far into<lb />the playoffs.<lb /><lb />This is extremely irritating, because there is<lb />nothing better than seeing the crazed and some-<lb />what obnoxious fans sitting at Boli Ts and Dr.Unks<lb />on Sunday afternoons, with their jerseys and<lb />drunken screams at the television.<lb /><lb />I am one of these people. We revel in the losses<lb />of other teams and boo the referees T bad calls, and<lb />yes, this is not the ideal way to treat opposing<lb />teams. Regardless of whether or not I like or hate<lb />them (Cowboys, cough).<lb /><lb />Considering this, I remember what Skip Holtz<lb />said to the Virginia Tech coach after the game at<lb />the beginning of the season. He told the coach that<lb />they were a role model for what they were trying to<lb />do for our football program here. This was when<lb />they were describing how congenial the VT fans<lb />are to visiting teams. For example, they always clap<lb />for the visiting team regardless of the outcome.<lb /><lb />This then reminded me of that letter we all<lb />received about our poor sportsmanship at the home<lb />games last year, and I agree. We get very out of<lb />hand sometimes.<lb /><lb />I am all for school pride and wanting our team<lb />to win, but sometimes yelling oBull S*** and<lb /> oF*** Carolina T (and I hate Carolina) is extremely<lb />inappropriate. I suppose all Skip wants is for us to<lb />be respectful to the teams our program welcomes<lb />to Greenville.<lb /><lb />I will say that I love our student section,<lb />although we are known for our outrageously strong<lb />school spirit and our undying love for our Pirates<lb />with or without the wins. Controlling ourselves<lb />will be difficult, and it is probably just a pipe dream,<lb />but I think that it is imperative to try.<lb /><lb />For the moral of our football games, the bet-<lb />terment of our Pirate spirit and to support the<lb />respectful direction that Coach Holtz is taking,<lb />we should.comply. We live and breathe purple and<lb />gold, so let Ts politely clap for those unfortunate<lb />enough to bleed other colors.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Many readers have responded to J.D. Lewis T<lb />column about Gov. Bill Richardson, which ran<lb />on Tuesday, Sept. 18th. To read the column,<lb />please visit our Web site at theeastcarolinian.<lb />com and navigate to our archives page<lb />from the toolbar on the homepage.<lb />We always welcome your responses.<lb /><lb />To the Editor:<lb /><lb />I agree with JD that the mainstream media<lb />should be giving more coverage and attention to<lb />Gov. Bill Richardson Ts run as a democrat for presi-<lb />dent. With all the coverage of Hillary Clinton Ts<lb />health care plan, for example, very few media out-<lb />lets are pointing out that it is virtually identical<lb />to the health care proposal Richardson rolled out<lb />six months ago. Richardson Ts environmental and<lb />energy policy has been called the omost aggressive <lb />at taking on global warming and achieving energy<lb />independence by the Sierra Club. This is not sur-<lb />prising, given his expertise after being Secretary.of<lb />Energy under Clinton (the only candidate to have<lb />held a cabinet post). His ability to represent us on<lb />the world stage and revitalize our standing in the<lb />world is assured because of his previous achieve-<lb />ments in that arena.<lb /><lb />Besides being proud to elect the first Latino<lb />for president, voters can also be proud to elect the<lb />first president who has already been nominated for<lb />the Nobel Peace Prize four times!<lb /><lb />Signed,<lb />Diana Faust<lb />Los Angeles, CA<lb /><lb />To the Editor:<lb /><lb />I couldn't agree with you more. Richardson has<lb />a great deal of diploniatic experience, as well as<lb />having been in the Energy department. He has been<lb />a congressman and has executive experience as a<lb />very successful governor. He has more experience<lb />then the oTop 3 Democrats in the race combined.<lb />He pretty much makes the top-tier candidates on<lb />béth sides appear amateurish and unqualified.<lb /><lb />Don Tt get too pessimistic, the race is really<lb />just beginning. Only now, after Labor Day, are<lb />the majority of people really beginning to pay<lb />attention, and the race doesn Tt begin to get really<lb />intense until December . Richardson has plenty of<lb />time to become known and get his message out. In<lb />the end, voters are likely to choose him because of<lb />his knowledge, experience, capacity to get things<lb />done through cooperation and his non-polarizing<lb />personality.<lb /><lb />Perry Youngworth<lb />Riverside, California<lb /><lb />THE DOCTOR<lb />ISIN<lb /><lb />eee<lb /><lb />OLY Tena Sender:<lb />onaivexaminercom |lolegs/(oecler<lb /><lb />THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 27,2007 PAGE A5<lb />RANT OF THE DAY __,<lb /><lb />Brad, where are you?<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. Phrases such as these have<lb />become such a cultural norm to many American<lb />students.<lb /><lb />Therefore, my question is this: When did<lb />drinking excessively, at times to the point of severe<lb />health concerns, become such a natural part of<lb />college life? When did the contest of how much<lb />one can drink become more important than having<lb />fun while you drink? As I have been studying in<lb />Spain, I have noticed some distinct cultural dif-<lb />ferences between the youth of Spain and that of<lb />the United States.<lb /><lb />The most distinct cultural difference that I.<lb />have noticed is that although the people of Spain<lb />enjoy drinking alcoholic beverages as much as<lb />Americans, they prefer it to be regarded as a tran-<lb />quil social event. Many American college students<lb />would reply that what is practiced in the United<lb />States is social drinking, but this is where I would<lb />disagree. Lining up shots and taking them as<lb />quickly as possible is not often seen in Spain. Many<lb />times, one beer can last a person all night.<lb /><lb />It is very common in the United States to hear<lb />an American college student recollecting how<lb />drunk he or she was one any given night. Fewer<lb />times will they mention the group, or how much<lb />the others had to drink. Even more seldom would<lb /><lb />Who wants another Bhat<lb /><lb />you hear either in Spain.<lb /><lb />On the surface, Spain is a country that has<lb />more bars that are visited more frequently and<lb />are open for longer hours. However, that being<lb />said, there are less people getting drunk. It seems<lb />to me that Spanish people have not forgotten the<lb />meaning of social drinking.<lb /><lb />According to Wikipedia, social drinking<lb /> orefers to casual collateral drinking, usually with-<lb />out the intent to get drunk. If one is to use such<lb />a definition, it seems that the average American<lb />student practices much more than social drinking.<lb />So what makes the United States different? What<lb />makes one culture different from that of another?<lb />This article is not a means of criticism, as I am an<lb /><lb />active member of the cultural norms of the United .<lb /><lb />States; however, my experiences have provoked<lb />many thoughts.<lb /><lb />Is the American way of getting ed really<lb />such a good idea and past-time? Let Ts see, one<lb />usually says and does things he or she will later<lb />regret. That is assuming that one remembers the<lb />night Ts events. Also, at times, one can wake up feel-<lb />ing extremely sick and confused. And still other<lb />times are spent rolling out of bed and looking at<lb />the credit card receipt and realizing that you spent<lb />entirely too much money at the bar.<lb /><lb />We all might do a little better to remember the<lb />meaning of social drinking and trying to have a<lb />bit more responsibility in our college years. Fewer<lb />women might be taken advantage of, fewer drunken<lb />phone calls made and fewer moments regretted. To<lb />be sure, passing the time with friends and having<lb />a drink or two can be blissful, but as it says on the<lb />beer label, drink responsibly.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Talking differently<lb />equals stupidity<lb /><lb />Dialect seems to matter<lb /><lb />KIMBERLY BELLAMY<lb />NEWS EDITOR<lb /><lb />College is a place that gives you the freedom<lb />to express yourself and be exposed to new ideas<lb />and cultures.<lb /><lb />With all the freedom ofeled: some eit<lb />seem reluctant to accept it, and turn their backs<lb />on anything that doesn Tt scream familiarity.<lb /><lb />The slightest things, such as the way some-<lb />one talks, turn people off. This is something that<lb />I Tve noticed since making my transition from my<lb />small hometown, full of people that sound just<lb />like me, toa university filled with a multitude<lb />of diverse groups. :<lb /><lb />When facing such a situation, you can opt<lb />to do two things: stay true to your regional<lb />dialect and be judged, or conform to those<lb />around you.<lb /><lb />Many people make assumptions about your<lb />intelligence, competence and character by your<lb />accent or your choice of words (slang).<lb /><lb />These features are key characteristics that<lb />make each one of us unique, not foreign.<lb /><lb />Conformity is a way that all of us have<lb />decided to cope with this issue, whether we Tve<lb />realized it or not.<lb /><lb />Usually, people speak differently around<lb />certain groups to feel a sense of belonging.<lb /><lb />The word usage chosen in a conversation<lb /><lb />_ with your mother would probably be different<lb /><lb />from the words chosen for a conversation with<lb />your spouse or companion.<lb /><lb />The things you choose to say to your floset<lb />friends would differ from things you decide to<lb />share with your professor.<lb /><lb />This type of conformity, also known as<lb />code switching, provides us with security. This<lb />confirms the saying of oyou are who you hang<lb />with. <lb /><lb />Choosing not to change your style of speech<lb />comes with consequences that can play a major<lb />part in our reputation, jobs we Tre hired for and<lb />friends we make.<lb /><lb />Maybe we should take a step back and think<lb />about why certain people talk the way they do<lb />before making assumptions.<lb /><lb />Undeniably, your ethnic background can be<lb />a factor in the way someone talks. One of my<lb />close friends from high school told:me that I<lb />didn Tt sound black anymore.<lb /><lb />How does black sound? Is black vernacu-<lb />lar better or worse than other distinctions in<lb />language?<lb /><lb />Some of these criticisms come from those<lb />that are supposed to empower and encourage<lb />us.<lb />One of my professors has told me flat out that<lb />I sound too country. What is the definition of<lb />country and what Ts so wrong with it?<lb /><lb />My southern drawl doesn Tt make'me inferior<lb />to you. Your thick city accent doesn Tt make you<lb />any smarter.<lb /><lb />The profession of broadcast journalism that<lb />I want to go into suggests that their employees<lb />express no dialect.<lb /><lb />If I am capable of getting the same message<lb />across with my native tongue, then why should<lb />I talk with no indication of dialect?<lb /><lb />You can stay true to yourself and still ful-<lb />fill the duty of communicating with a large<lb />population.<lb /><lb />Everyone is capable of producing and com-<lb />prehending eloquent, meaningful thoughts.<lb />The way these thoughts are expressed once we<lb />open up our mouths to speak shouldn Tt be an<lb />automatic dismissal of these ideas.<lb /><lb />Whether your accent is regional, racially or<lb />culturally stimulated, it should be acknowledged<lb />and accepted, not frowned upon.<lb /><lb />Use your time in college to develop an open<lb />mind to all types of people.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Kimberly Bellamy Rachel King<lb />News Editor Opinion Editor<lb />Greg Katski Ronnie Woodward<lb /><lb />Sports Editor Asst. With two<lb />straight shutouts. against in-<lb />state foes Campbell and UNC<lb />Wilmington, the Pirates are<lb />ranked 13th in the Southeast<lb />Region according to Soccer<lb />Buzz, the exclusive colle-<lb />giate publication for women Ts<lb />soccer.<lb /><lb />The ranking is the highest<lb />for ECU since 1999, when they<lb />were ranked 10th going into<lb />the Tfinal week of the season.<lb />That team would go on to<lb />finish 11-5.<lb /><lb />North Carolina (6-2) is<lb />currently ranked first in the<lb />Southeast Region followed by<lb />Florida State (5-2-1), South<lb />Carolina (8-1), Florida (4-2-<lb />2) and Wake Forest (5-3-1).<lb />Charlotte (5-3 9th) and N.C.<lb />State (5-1-2, 15th) round out<lb />the six North Carolina schools<lb />ranked in the top 15. C-USA<lb />foe UCF is also ranked in the<lb />top 15, coming in 10th with a<lb />record of 4-2-2,<lb /><lb />THEY SAID IT<lb /><lb /> oThey spread you out and do a<lb />great job of making you defend<lb />every blade of grass. Spread out the ECU defense<lb /><lb />The Pirates have struggled against the spread of-<lb />fense the past two weeks, and Houston runs the<lb />spread offense very effectively. Houston has an<lb /><lb />_athletic offensive core in freshman quarterback<lb /><lb />Case Keenum, senior receiver Donnie Avery, who<lb />runs a 4.25 40-yard dash and a speedy running<lb />back in Anthony Alridge, who leads C-USA in all-<lb />purpose yards with 193.7 yards per game. The<lb />Cougars need to get the ball to their playmakers<lb /><lb />in space like Southern Miss and West Virginia did<lb /><lb />against the ECU defense.<lb /><lb />2. Win the special teams battle<lb /><lb />Special teams should play a huge role in this<lb />game, as both teams have distinct strengths and<lb />weaknesses in this area. Both teams have strong<lb />kick returners in Houston Ts Alridge and ECU's<lb />Chris Johnson; the Pirates currently lead C-USA in<lb />kickoff returns. Houston is also last in the contfer-<lb /><lb />Photos by Aileen Deviin<lb /><lb />{ECU's Inside Source}<lb /><lb />dd alone opening the season.<lb /><lb />THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 27, 2007<lb /><lb />Pace A6<lb /><lb />FOOTBALL PREVIEW<lb /><lb />ECU to use two-quarterback system<lb /><lb />JARED JACKSON<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />It Ts no secret that ECU (1-3, 0-1) is roughed up and fatigued after<lb />enduring one of the toughest four game stretches in program history;<lb /><lb />_ During each of Skip Holtz T first two seasons the Pirates have started<lb />the season 1-3, but went on to win its next game; both of which were<lb />played in Greenville. [his year ECU is once again sitting at 1-3 but look-<lb />ing for its second win of the season against defending C-USA champion<lb />Houston (2-1, 1-0) at Robertson Stadium, instead of at the comfort of<lb />Dowdy-Ficklen.<lb /><lb />The Cougars only loss has been to No. 11 Oregon, and Holtz knows<lb /><lb />that his team is in for another highly competitive game.<lb /><lb /> oFrom a statistical standpoint, I wish we were better on both oe<lb />of the ball, said Holtz. oHowever, we have played two top-10 teams and<lb />then the best defensive team in the conference. It doesn't get any easier,<lb />though, as we go to play Houston...they return eight players on defense<lb />and seven players on offense from a team that won the conference a year<lb />ago. I think Coach Briles has done a great job with his team and he is<lb />beginning to establish a program that is soltd every year. <lb /><lb /> The Pirates own a 4-3 advantage in the series with the Cougars<lb />dating back to 1997. ECU Ts last victory over Houston came in 2002.<lb />The Pirates lost the last meeting between the two however, 34-24, at<lb />Robertson Stadium in 2004.<lb /><lb />ECU has had a rough four-game stretch to open the season, but the<lb />last two weeks have been especially draining, as the Pirates let one get<lb />away against Southern Miss, 28-21, and then traveled to play West Vir-<lb /><lb />_ ginia, only to get beat handily by the Mountaineers, 48-7.<lb /><lb />Now ECU must board a flight on Friday and fly across the country to<lb />play the Cougars, and Holtz knows that the emotion of the first third of<lb />the season, coupled with traveling can wear anyone out; including him.<lb /><lb /> oWe've been competitive in the first games and emotionally they<lb /><lb />_were so draining, he said. oI went home after the North Carolina and<lb /><lb />Southern Miss games, sat down and felt exhausted, and I didn't have the<lb />physical side to it, just the emotional. <lb /><lb />Holtz is hoping the travel to Houston will not affect his players<lb />effort on Saturday.<lb /><lb /> oYou worry about fatigue, Holtz said of the road trip. ou re getting<lb />on a bus, then youre on a plane, then you're on a bus and you go back<lb /><lb />_and forth. It Ts like herding cattle sometimes, travel can be draining and<lb /><lb />ence in punting, while the Pirates are 2-of-6 on<lb /><lb />field goal attempts this season. Houston needs to<lb /><lb />getter production out of its punter, contain Chris:<lb /><lb />Johnson on kick returns and win the special teams<lb />phase of the game.<lb /><lb />3. Use the home field advantage<lb /><lb />Houston is approximately 1,110 miles away from<lb /><lb />Greenville. The Cougars went undefeated at home<lb /><lb />last season, including the C-USA championship<lb /><lb />game, and haven't lost at Robertson Stadium<lb /><lb />since Nov. 19, 2005. The last time the Pirates<lb /><lb />played in Houston was last year against Rice, a<lb />game which Rice won on a last second field goal.<lb />Traveling halfway across the country to win a col-<lb /><lb />lege football game is not an easy chore, something<lb /><lb />Houston should benefit from Saturday.<lb /><lb />take a lot out of you. <lb /><lb />While Holtz would surely love to have. a cupcake team awaiting his<lb />squad on Saturday, the fact of the matter is that his team must line up<lb />and play the defending conference ebatapions in the second phase of<lb />ECU's schedule.<lb /><lb /> oWe sat the team down and broke our schedule into three parts, <lb />Holtz said. oThe first part is over and now you begin to get into the<lb />conference race. The middle part isn't any easier when you look at<lb />Houston, UCF, UTEP and NC State. We are at a stopping point now<lb />and we want to evaluate where we are and where we are going for the<lb />next four games. <lb /><lb />One of the things that Holtz and his staff came to the conclusion of<lb />during their evaluation is that the team needs to utilize both junior Patrick<lb />Pinkney and redshirt sophomore Rob Kass at the quarterback position.<lb />While Patrick Pinkney has done above and beyond what has been asked<lb />of him in his three starts as the Pirates T signal caller, Rob Kass brings<lb />certain elements to the offense that Pinkney cannot, and vice versa.<lb /><lb /> oThere is a need and there is room for two quarterbacks in this<lb />offense, T Holtz said at a Monday press conference. oWe can't ask Patrick<lb /><lb />_ to do everything right now. We have to formulate different packages<lb /><lb />so that Patrick and Rob can be successful. It will be much harder for a<lb /><lb />_ defense having to prepare for multiple packages. The blocking schemes<lb /><lb />for the offensive line wont change much but we will use our personnel<lb />where they best fit. <lb /><lb />Kass, who was originally slated to be the Pirates T starting quarterback<lb />prior to being arrested for driving while impaired the week before the<lb />season opener, is looking forward to his first significant action of the<lb />season against the Cougars.<lb /><lb /> oI'm very excited, T said Kass. oAs much as this past week at West<lb />Virginia hurts, were all going to learn from it. Were all going to<lb />become better players. The coaches are going to work their butts off to<lb />get this team prepared to go to Houston and work towards a conference<lb />championship. <lb /><lb />Kass also happens to be in favor the dual Wie erbauk eaten, which<lb />will utilize either Pinkney or him depending on the situation.<lb /><lb />see PREVIEW page A7<lb /><lb />irates hope to tame Cougars<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />KEYS IC<lb />THE GAME<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />_1. Force Houston to run the ball<lb /><lb />Before: becoming Houston Ts head football coach,<lb />Art Briles was the running backs coach at Texas<lb />Tech, which means that he was around an offense<lb /><lb /> that passed the ball almost every down. It Ts no<lb /><lb />wonder that Briles adopted the same offensive<lb />philosophy at Houston, as the Cougars have been<lb />throwing the ball an average of 35 times a game<lb />through three games this season. ECU must take<lb />away the pass and force Houston to run the ball<lb />or the Pirates secondary could get picked apart<lb /><lb />all game long.<lb /><lb />2. Make the dual quarterback system work<lb /><lb />Skip Holtz has let it be known all week that he<lb />plans to play both Patrick Pinkney and Rob Kass<lb />at the quarterback position this weekend in an<lb />effort to keep Houston's defense on its toes.<lb />Pinkney is known as a scrambler that can use<lb />both his legs and arm to march down the field,<lb />while Kass is a typical gunslinger that can thrown <lb />the ball downfield and make the big play. In order<lb />to successfully utilize this system, the coaches<lb />must substitute Kass and Pinkney in at the right<lb />times and not mess with the offensive rhythm.<lb /><lb />3. Bounce back<lb /><lb />The Pirates are banged up both mentally and<lb />physically, and will have a long plane ride on<lb />Friday. Holtz and his staff must make sure that,<lb /><lb />_the players are rested up and are on top of their<lb /><lb />game come 7 p.m. Saturday. lf not, then don't be<lb />surprised to see the same snowball effect that<lb />doomed the Pirates against West Virginia from<lb />the outset of the game last week.<lb /><lb /></p>

As long as East Carolina comes out on the<lb /><lb />- winning side of the scoreboard that Ts all that matters to me. <lb /><lb />While the Pirates faced the rushing attack of the Mountaineers last week, this week ECU<lb />should be prepared for the Cougar Ts pass-happy offense that is sure to be engaged in full throttle<lb />after watching game tape of the young and statistically dreadful Pirate secondary. [he Cougars<lb />redshirt freshman quarterback, Case Keenum, has thrown for 561 yards and four touchdowns<lb />on the year.<lb /><lb />Pirate defensive tackle Khalif Mitchell believes while stopping the run is most essential to<lb />the Pirates, the Cougars like to throw the ball and he doesn't consider that a bad thing.<lb /><lb /> oIt is always important and a priority, T Mitchell said of stopping the run. oIt Ts always impor-<lb />tant to make sure you play your gaps, play hard and knock the line of scrimmage back so when<lb />the running back runs down he runs into our guys...Stopping the run is bigger than stopping<lb />the pass, but they do pass a lot and that is going to be good because it is going to allow us to<lb />come after them more.<lb /><lb />As the days and hours tick away tomards Saturday's 7<lb />at 1-3 isn't as troubling as it might seem.<lb /><lb /> oWe have to get ourselves off the ground and brush off, T said Holtz. oI told the team that<lb />nothing is ever as good or as bad as it seems. Reality falls somewhere in between and | think<lb />things are not as bad as they seem right now. We have to step up because life is a series of battles.<lb />You will rarely, if ever, be on the very top or bottom. :<lb /><lb />With a win, the Pirates will gain early momentum in the second phase of their oe<lb />schedule, as Holtz puts it. After the<lb />2007 season, the Palmetto, Fla.<lb />native will leave as one of the<lb />most talented offensive linemen<lb />in school history.<lb /><lb />Coffman made his offensive<lb />line debut just last season. <lb />PAGE A8<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 27, 2007<lb /><lb />Quarterback carousel 1s troubling<lb /><lb />Pinkney and Kass will<lb /><lb />be sharing duties<lb /><lb />GREG KATSKI<lb />SPORTS EDITOR<lb /><lb />&amp;<lb /><lb />It is the classic battle of wits<lb />and ingenuity, strength and<lb />skill, and ultimately success in<lb />football; the competition to be<lb />the starting quarterback. While<lb />some football pundits think<lb />that a quarterback controversy<lb /><lb />.can bring a healthy, competi-<lb /><lb />tive spirit to a team,<lb /><lb />history<lb /><lb />and common sense tell us oth-<lb />erwise.<lb /><lb />In football, there is nothing<lb />more important than stabil-<lb />ity at the top; long-tenured<lb />coaches and quarterbacks bring<lb />a necessary order to a team.<lb />This is especially the case with<lb />quarterbacks, who must build a<lb />trust with their wide receivers,<lb />offensive line, tight ends and<lb />running backs.<lb /><lb /> Peyton Manning and the<lb />Indianapolis Colts provide the<lb />best example for this stability, as<lb />Manning has been working with<lb /><lb />the same set of wide receivers<lb />and tight ends<lb />for many years.<lb /><lb />has become<lb /><lb />The execution ©<lb /><lb />so flawless between Manning<lb />and wide receiver Marvin Har-<lb />rison that Manning can throw<lb />a sharp pass to Harrison before<lb />Harrison even makes his cut,<lb />and viola, a 30-yard out-route<lb />done easy.<lb /><lb />There is no such stability<lb />to be found on ECU Ts offense,<lb />especially with a host of first-<lb />year starters and newcomers.<lb />The one position settled before<lb />the beginning of the season was<lb />at quarterback, until starter Rob<lb />Kass was arrested and charged<lb />with driving while impaired<lb />the Saturday before the season<lb />opener against Virginia Tech.<lb /><lb />Former third-string quar-<lb />terback Patrick Pinkney seized<lb />the opportunity and posted a<lb />career-defining game against<lb />UNC the following week.<lb /><lb />All seemed to be stable<lb />at the position until the fol-<lb />lowing week when Pinkney<lb />made several mental errors,<lb />including an interception and<lb />two illegal forward passes in a<lb />loss to Southern Miss. Although<lb />these mistakes halted drives, it<lb />was not solely Pinkney Ts fault<lb />that ECU lost; the quarterback<lb />still posted very respectable sta-<lb />tistics. The same cannot be said<lb />for Pinkney Ts performance at<lb />No. 5 West Virginia last week,<lb />but this is understandable.<lb /><lb />It seems as if after the UNC<lb /><lb />game every Pirate fan in the<lb /><lb />. . country forgot that Pinkney<lb /><lb />had never started a game<lb />\ before the season, let<lb />_ alone thrown a pass in<lb /> a game. With such high<lb />expectations placed by<lb />the UNC perfor-<lb />mance, it was inevi-<lb />table that Pinkney<lb />would have his let-<lb />downs.<lb /><lb />Now the Pirates<lb />sit at 1-3 for the second<lb />year in a row, granted<lb />the team Ts first four games<lb />this season trump last<lb />season Ts in degree of dif-<lb />ficulty, and are looking<lb />for answers on offense.<lb /><lb />ECU football Head<lb /><lb />Coach Skip Holtz<lb />said before the game<lb /><lb />es<lb /><lb />-ing schemes for the offen-<lb /><lb />at West Virginia that the team<lb />would be re-evaluated and<lb />changes would be in-store at<lb />key positions. ~<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts time to start holding<lb />people accountable, said Holtz.<lb /> oWe are in the midst of discuss-<lb />ing some changes right now at<lb />a couple of positions. If we can Tt<lb />create a winner three weeks in<lb />a row it Ts time to ask if we are<lb />playing with the right people. <lb /><lb />Holtz stayed true to his<lb />word, as Pinkney and Kass will<lb />be sharing duties at quarterback<lb />for the foreseeable future. If<lb />recent history is any indication,<lb />this is not necessarily a good<lb />coaching method. The only<lb />quarterback duo I can recall<lb />having success in this system<lb />is the dynamic one-two punch<lb />of Florida quarterback Ts Chris<lb />Leak and Tim Tebow, who<lb />carried the Gators to the BCS<lb />National Championship.<lb /><lb />The same experiment failed<lb />for the Jacksonville Jaguars, as<lb />the stoiac Byron Leftwich and<lb />flashy David Garrard failed to<lb />produce winning seasons for the<lb />Jags while sharing duties.<lb /><lb />The problems with having<lb />a two-quarterback system are<lb />numerous and obvious. No quar-<lb />terback can feel comfortable<lb />with the threat of another able-<lb />bodied quarterback waiting on<lb />the sideline for the slightest<lb />mistake or miscue.<lb /><lb />Pinkney has his shortcom-<lb />ings, but has seemingly won<lb />the job from the ground up. It<lb />makes me wonder how he will<lb />respond when a mistake is made;<lb />will he fold under the pressure,<lb />or prevail?<lb /><lb />Holtz T rationale is simple<lb />and understandable.<lb /><lb /> oWe can Tt ask Patrick to do<lb />everything right now. We have<lb />to formulate different pack-<lb />ages so that Patrick and Rob<lb />can be successful, Holtz said.<lb /> oIt will be much harder for a<lb />defense having to prepare for<lb />multiple packages. The block-<lb /><lb />sive line won't change<lb />much, but we will use<lb />our personnel where<lb />they best fit. <lb /><lb />The question is, will this<lb />also make it harder for Pinkney<lb />to prepare knowing that he<lb />might not be the right fit for<lb />certain situations throughout<lb />the game. Quarterbacks require<lb />time and experience during the<lb />game to find a flow and rhythm<lb />they feel comfortable with.<lb />Inserting Kass for a deep pass,<lb />or Pinkney for a bootleg will<lb />only disrupt the rhythm of the<lb />offense and quarterbacks.<lb /><lb /> oWe are not good enough<lb />offensively to be one-dimen-<lb /><lb />sional.. There is a need and there.<lb /><lb />is room for two quarterbacks in<lb />this offense, Holtz said.<lb />Pinkney and Kass certainly<lb />have two distinct sets of skills<lb />for a quarterback; Kass has the<lb />strong arm and large frame,<lb />Pinkney has the quick feet and<lb />natural instincts of a play-<lb />maker. It will be interesting<lb />to see how the quarterbacks<lb />are used in the offense;<lb />but the results<lb />might not be so<lb />pretty. Holtz<lb />thinks that<lb />the offense<lb />Cann ot<lb />afford to be<lb />one-dimen-<lb />sional and must keep<lb />defenses on their<lb />heels, but every-<lb />one and their mom<lb />knows that when<lb />Kass is in he Ts<lb />going to stay<lb />strong in the<lb />pocket and<lb />look deep,<lb />and when<lb />Pinkey<lb />1S<lb />in<lb /><lb />he Ts going to get out of the<lb />pocket and look to make a play.<lb /><lb />Holtz is positive that the<lb />offense needs the spark of two<lb />very different quarterbacks.<lb /><lb /> oWe need to be able to play<lb />two quarterbacks but Patrick<lb />has never needed confidence, <lb />Holtz said.<lb /><lb />I hope Holtz is right and<lb />Pinkney is not affected by<lb />the quarterback controversy,<lb />because confidence is something<lb />that cannot be measured in a<lb />quarterback, unlike physical<lb />skills.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />4<lb /><lb />| internet access in every bedroom<lb /><lb />te be hrooms | ly nevery bedroom<lb /><lb />a ully equipped kitchen<lb /><lb />ly equipped game .<lb /><lb /></p>

Additionally, she has<lb />danced with renowned dancers,<lb />such as Mikhail Baryshnikov<lb />and Cyril Atanassoff, -in a<lb />lengthy classical repertoire as<lb />well as some ballets written<lb />by her husband, Valery Panov<lb />(with whom she danced in<lb />numerous shows).<lb /><lb />Her impressive resume also<lb />goes on to include an appear-<lb />ance on Broadway in the musi-<lb />cal comedy On Your Toes.<lb /><lb />Panova shared that rehears-<lb />als are usually a strenuous<lb />seven to ten-hour-a-day regime,<lb />but that they allow the body to<lb /> T remember intricate movements.<lb /><lb />In her free time, Panova<lb />shares her love of dance by<lb />teaching Argentinean Tango<lb />to older adults.<lb /><lb />She likes teaching at ECU,<lb />and she finds fulfillment in<lb />nurturing the young talent<lb />here as well as choreographing<lb />the shows for the Theatre and<lb />Dance Department.<lb /><lb />Panova has been instruct-<lb />ing dance since 1987 at vari-<lb />ous academies in the U.S. and<lb />around the world.<lb /><lb />Panova stated that good<lb />dancers must have oa sense<lb />of musicality, the ability to<lb />create a character and that the<lb />audience must see what you<lb />are thinking... their job is to<lb />believe in you. <lb /><lb />This writer can be reached at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />pper Beech _<lb /><lb />Now Preleasing for 2008<lb />1,2,3 &amp; 4 Bedroom<lb /><lb />Townhomes -<lb /><lb />Up to 2000 square feet<lb /><lb />DOWN HOMES<lb /><lb />Swimming Pool - Basketball<lb />Volleyball - Tanning Beds<lb />Computer Center -<lb /><lb />| 203 East Fifth Street<lb />Greenville, NC 27858<lb />(252) 757-1015 + www.cbeech.com<lb /><lb />Bar is Op<lb /><lb />Come join us and meet the staff of<lb />Copper Beech Townhomes at<lb />Ham's Resteraunt &amp; Brewery<lb /><lb />Thursday, Sept. 27th from<lb /><lb />Tpm-10pm.<lb /><lb />We're providing the food,<lb />freebies &amp; drinks and watching<lb />you have the fun! *<lb /><lb />*You must have a ticket to participate. It<lb />depends on who you ask. In my<lb />opinion, photos don Tt always tell<lb />the truth, and art and reality<lb />are both subjective. I tried my<lb />best to present the situation as<lb /><lb />honestly as I could. All in all,<lb />this is something people need to<lb />see, not shy away from, regard-<lb />less of how ugly it is, said Cook.<lb />There is without a doubt a<lb />fine line between what is art<lb />and what is photojournalism,<lb />but one of the many benefits<lb />of this particular exhibition is<lb />that it includes many powerful<lb />images, possibly helping the<lb /><lb />viewer to develop his or her<lb />own opinion on the matter.<lb />For more information on this<lb />event and future events hosted<lb />by the Visual Arts Commit-:<lb />tee, contact Mendenhall Gal--<lb />lery at 328-4715 or email at<lb />suvisualarts@mail.ecu.edu.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />DOLLY continued from AlO<lb /><lb />for the musical, said Gladden.<lb /><lb /> oBoth Hello, Dolly! and our<lb />other production, The Under-<lb />pants, are both set in the time<lb />period that ECU was founded, <lb />said Woodruff.<lb /><lb />Hello, Dolly! is a story set in<lb />New York City in the turn of the<lb />century The musical outlines<lb />the story about a matchmaker<lb />who is trying to set herself up<lb />with the richest new up-and-<lb />comer in the city. He has worked very hard<lb />to gain the respect and acclaim<lb />he has received. I think Hartley<lb /><lb />UNION continued from Al10<lb /><lb />Additionally, on Jan: 25,<lb />the Student Union will be<lb />sponsoring a large comedy<lb />show, although the come-<lb />dian has not yet been decided.<lb />This will be the first major<lb />event that Student Union has<lb />sponsored in five years. More<lb />information about the comedy<lb />show will be announced at a<lb />later time.<lb /><lb />Student Union also plans<lb />events like bingo and cultural<lb />programs on campus and works<lb />closely with other groups at<lb />ECU, like the Ledonia Wright<lb />Cultural Center.<lb /><lb /> oI Tve learned a lot about<lb />event planning and doing a lot<lb />of hands-on planning [through<lb />the:Student Union]. There Ts a<lb />lot that students can do. We've<lb />definitely gone down in num-<lb />bers, but it Ts really easy to join.<lb />All-you need to do is come to<lb />Mendenhall and let someone<lb />know what youre interested in<lb />doing. You can [also] do a lot<lb />of networking through Student<lb />Union. I Tve made most of my<lb />friends at ECU from being in<lb />the Student Union, said Sherry<lb />Lillington, a committee member<lb />of the Student Union.<lb /><lb />Student Union also works<lb />with movie theatres and com-<lb />panies to bring films to ECU<lb />that have not yet hit theatres.<lb />These films are chosen entirely<lb />by students of the Student<lb />Union committees.<lb /><lb />According to Charles<lb />Brown, Director of Student<lb />Activities at ECU, each com-<lb />mittee of the Student Union has<lb />a chair (or leader). who does not<lb />vote for movies, popular enter-<lb />tainment, lectures, or concerts,<lb />which leaves the decisions up to<lb />the-students.<lb /><lb /> oThe chairs of the seven<lb />committees do not vote for films<lb />or anything else. We hope that<lb />this takes away any biases of the<lb />chair, T said Brown.<lb /><lb />Brown also said that the<lb />Student Union is different than<lb />most organizations on campus<lb />because it does not require any<lb />member to pay dues.<lb /><lb />Spectrum: TBA<lb /><lb />8 Cultural Awareness:<lb /><lb />_ Films: Thursdays at 5 p.m. -<lb /><lb /> oMembership is open to all<lb />students at ECU. Whether<lb />or not they choose to actively<lb />take part in it is up to them, <lb />Brown said.<lb /><lb />Michael Caple, Student<lb />Union President, said that the<lb />organization is a fun, gratifying<lb />place for students to give opin-<lb />ions about events on campus.<lb /><lb /> oIf you're looking for an<lb />enriching opportunity to act<lb />and have an impact on people Ts<lb />lives through event planning...<lb />then the Student Union is the<lb />place for you, said Caple.<lb /><lb />Caple also stated that he<lb />feels that the Student Union is<lb />the most important organiza-<lb />tion on campus because it gives<lb />students the opportunity to<lb />voice what they want out of their<lb />time at ECU.<lb /><lb /> oTo be honest, 100 percent<lb />of the time that we're planning<lb />events, we take students T consid-<lb />eration in mind...we Tre building<lb />a team atmosphere, and I take<lb />pride [in that], Caple said.<lb /><lb />Because most of the events<lb />are chosen and requested by stu-<lb />dents, Brown encourages more<lb />people to come be:a part of the<lb />Student Union.<lb /><lb /> oIf students are not happy<lb />with the decisions that we make,<lb />we welcome them to come and<lb />vote. We want them to feel free<lb />to personally take part in the<lb />voting process, Brown said.<lb /><lb />Each month, the Student<lb />Union issues a newsletter called<lb />The Entertainer.
