LEWIS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />If you've seen the fliers plastered all over campus,<lb />or the ads in this newspaper, you're aware that Sister<lb />Souljah, a recording artist, author, producer, and<lb />racist whose real name is Lisa Williams, will be<lb />the keynote speaker at this weekend Ts Multicultural<lb />Student Leadership Conference in the Mendenhall<lb />Student Center. Was David Duke not available?<lb /><lb />What's next? Mahmoud Ahmadinejad address-<lb />ing the next meeting of Hillel? How about Jesse<lb />Helms headlining the next B-GLAD event?<lb />Neither one makes a whole lot of sense. Equally<lb />unfathomable is Sister Souljah keynoting a multi-<lb />cultural leadership conference.<lb /><lb />Multiculturalism is defined as the idea that a<lb />society, notably one with a high rate of immigration,<lb />is enriched by celebrating the separate contributions<lb />of its component cultures. To me that means all<lb />cultures, and, for better or for worse, that includes<lb />we white folk. Yes, we have our bad apples, but for<lb />every David Duke, there Ts an Abraham Lincoln.<lb /><lb />Sister Souljah came to national attention when<lb />then presidential candidate Bill Clinton criticized<lb />her remarks on race in a May 1992, Washington<lb />Post interview. Souljah was. quoted as saying, oIf<lb />black people kill black people every day, why not<lb />have a week and kill white people? ?<lb /><lb />Souljah has also been quoted as saying, oIm not saying<lb />there aren't any decent white people; I've just never met one ?<lb /><lb />Are these the comments of the leader?<lb /><lb />To her credit, Sister Souljah has done a lot of good<lb />work for homeless and other disadvantaged youth<lb />in the black community through camps and other<lb />educational programs. She has rallied against racially-<lb />motivated crimes "ironic given her remarks against<lb />the white race "and police brutality. Such activities<lb />are admirable, but is it admirable to sow the seeds of<lb />hate as well?<lb /><lb />I don Tt know whose idea it was to invite Sister Soul-<lb />Jah to ECU, but surely someone who truly embraces<lb />multiculturalism could have been found. We have<lb />many fine professors from all over the world, who<lb /><lb />_are excellent role models, right here on our campus.<lb />Probably at least one of them would have been glad to<lb />speak if asked.<lb /><lb />On her website, Souljah claims that omany people<lb />attempt to silence ? her opowerful voice ? because oa<lb />young influential woman who has achieved so much, yet<lb />remains down to earth, can be quite intimidating. ?<lb /><lb />No, but when someone calls for a week-long killing<lb />spree of members of your race and is embraced as a leader,<lb />it can be a little unsettling.<lb /><lb />Remember, Hitler was a leader too.<lb /><lb />_ Sources include sistersouljah.com and the New York Times.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Ever wanted your<lb />own military?<lb />Well now you can have it, for a price<lb /><lb />YAZID FINN<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The idea is taken straight from a futuristic<lb />war movie: the premise is mercenaries, who work<lb />for the highest bidder. These gun-for-hires travel<lb />under the guise of security detail and work without<lb />rules, protected by those who employ them.<lb /><lb />While the notion is unsettling, such people do<lb />exist and they are currently operating overseas.<lb />Some place the number of mercenaries working in<lb />Iraq well into the tens of thousands, while some<lb />reports list figures of at least one hundred thousand<lb />contract workers.<lb /><lb />Do not think that Blackwater, a private security<lb />firm, is a recent coming to the war in Iraq, as they<lb />have been in action for years. Reports from the<lb />beginning of the Iraq war place the North Caro-<lb />lina based private security firm in the country. It<lb />is only of late that its name has made headlines<lb />again, with two notable inquiries (and counting)<lb />as you read this article.<lb /><lb />The first to arise was a shooting that took place<lb />Sept. 16, in which numerous civilians including<lb />women and children were shot and killed. Wit-<lb />nesses to the shoot-out relayed that Blackwater<lb />acted unprovoked and out of cold blood, whereas<lb />Blackwater Ts spokesperson described the contract<lb />workers as having oheroically defended American<lb />lives in a war zone. ?<lb /><lb />The incident caused a visible stir as evidenced<lb />when Iraq Ts Prime Minister Maliki called for a<lb />halt in Blackwater Ts presence in the country. Of<lb />course, this did not last long, for less than four<lb />days later, Blackwater was back on the street. It<lb />would seem the security force is more of a crutch<lb />than originally thought.<lb /><lb />With its position in Iraq secured, all seemed<lb />well for the security firm until auditors for Black-<lb />water Ts weapons caches found enough sound evi-<lb />dence to file smuggling charges. As if their $600-<lb />a-day pay (tax free up to their first $75,000) was<lb />not enough, some have taken it upon themselves<lb />to make a little more on the side through illegal<lb />arms deals. While I am not that up-to-date on the<lb />_ going rate of an M-16, I do not think the average<lb /><lb />American would like to know rifles are being sold -<lb /><lb />into the hands of the enemy.<lb /><lb />But before anyone gets the bright idea of pressing<lb />charges or suing Blackwater, let me warn you that<lb />it is not that simple. Iraq cannot prosecute them as<lb />the US flies these oprofessionals ? out of the country<lb />after any questionable incident arises. Then, once<lb />back in the States, the US government turns down<lb />any charges against them, because the cases might<lb />reveal classified information relating to the war.<lb /><lb />As always, while some might not support the idea<lb />of the war in Iraq, Americans are always asked to at<lb />least support those who are overseas. That is fine by<lb />me, but I will take my troops the old-fashioned way;<lb />fighting for the country and not for the pocket.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />ler,<lb /><lb />J HEARD THAT LETTING<lb />Kips WATCH Too MUCH oTv<lb /><lb />Uptown<lb /><lb />MAY CAVSE ATTENTION<lb />PROBLEMS A, ee<lb /><lb /> ote ne<lb /><lb />nn<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />?,?<lb /><lb />= mays - PSSST. Many of you have<lb />heard this quote. Some of you may have even read<lb />the poem. In this article I am trying to convince<lb />you to do just that. Not in some preachy meta-<lb />phorical way, I actually want to go to a road and<lb />perhaps enjoy some things you won't find elsewhere<lb />in Greenville. Evans Street is the road; Uptown<lb />Greenville is the place.<lb /><lb />I have lived on this road in Uptown Greenville<lb />for the past year, and in that short period of time,<lb />I have seen a transition. Once the focal point of<lb />business and social activity in Greenville (in the<lb />1950's), the area was more or less left to rot until<lb />recently.<lb /><lb />I can remember freshman year, when the only<lb />signs of life Uptown were a few shops and a couple<lb />of bums. Funding for.the area ran out and the tran-<lb />sition began to move to Greenville Boulevard and<lb />Red Banks Road. As most of you know, Greenville<lb />Boulevard and areas west of it are now a traffic<lb />nightmare, and because of that, I think many busi-<lb />ness owners are seeing an opportunity for growth<lb />in the historic part of town. There are a wide array<lb />of businesses new and old that are worth visiting<lb />in Uptown Greenville and in this article I will tell<lb />you about a few of my favorites.<lb /><lb />The newest establishment to pop up on Evans<lb /><lb />Street is called oHookah Haze ? and it is as far as<lb /><lb />I know the only hookah bar in town. For those of<lb />you who don Tt go out and drink but still want to<lb />do something fun, this is a great alternative. Far<lb />different from any other hookah bar I have seen,<lb />Haze is not as relaxed and chill as one may think.<lb />Sure the majority of the time it is laid back and<lb />mellow, but many times the atmosphere is high<lb />energy music, dancing and all around enjoyment.<lb />The inside is very clean and comfortable with a<lb />good sound system and plenty of couches to sit<lb /><lb />on while you puff on any of their choice tobaccos..<lb /><lb />Hookah Haze is already gaining in popularity on<lb />campus and if you Tre smart you'll give it a try.<lb />Another great spot Uptown is called Acacias<lb />Tipsy Teapot. The Tipsy Teapot is a used bookstore<lb />that offers great deals on books and food as well<lb />as a quiet friendly atmosphere in which to study<lb /><lb />or read a book. The cuisine offered at the Teapot<lb /><lb />ranges from great salads and vegetarian items<lb /><lb />- to lasagna and philly cheese steaks. My personal<lb /><lb />favorite is the vegetarian nachos, with a glass of<lb />black currant iced tea. The Tipsy Teapot like the<lb />rest of Uptown has wireless Internet connection<lb />outlets to plug in your laptop.<lb /><lb />Not to forget my favorite neighbors, another<lb />next recommendation for lunch or dinner has to<lb />be Jahnaz Caribbean Restaurant. Jahnaz serves up<lb />traditional Jamaican and Caribbean cuisine such as<lb />curry and jerked chicken, oxtails, plantains, rice<lb />and beans and even goat, for the daring. Jahnaz<lb />also has great tropical drinks and merchandise<lb /><lb />for sale. If you want a great meal at a reasonable<lb /><lb />price but are sick of burgers and pizza, I definitely<lb />recommend giving Jahnaz a try.<lb /><lb />There are at least a dozen places worth visit-<lb />ing Uptown that I did not mention, all of which<lb />provide a product or service different from any-<lb />where else around town. From great bars like<lb />The Green Lantern, 4° Street Wine Bar and<lb />soon-to-open 5 Points Tavern; to art studios and<lb />shops like Emerge and Ripple City. The quiet and T<lb />friendly atmosphere Uptown is something unique<lb />to Greenville, and I hope each of you take my word<lb />and give us a visit.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Kimberly Bellamy Rachel King<lb />News Editor Opinion Editor<lb />Greg Katski Ronnie Woodward<lb /><lb />Sports Editor Asst.
