The purpose of<lb />the survey was to evaluate<lb />ways to create and maintain<lb />positive diversity on campus,<lb />therefore making ECU com-<lb />fortable and welcoming for<lb />everyone.<lb /><lb /> oThe survey was designed for<lb />respondents to provide informa-<lb />tion about their personal expe-<lb />riences with regard to climate<lb />issues, said Virginia Hardy,<lb />interim chief diversity officer.<lb /><lb />The survey was able to<lb />identify the number of students<lb />that voted as well as what<lb />social and racial group they<lb />represented.<lb /><lb />The total number of stu-<lb />dents, faculty and staff that<lb />actually completed the survey<lb /><lb />was 3,237. Student responses<lb />alone were 1,747.<lb /><lb />Most of the respon-<lb />dents were from honor<lb />societies and religious<lb />or spiritual organizations.<lb /><lb /> oGraduate<lb />were less responsive, said<lb />Susan Rankin of Rankin<lb />and Associates Consulting.<lb /><lb />Out of the 3,237 par-<lb />ticipants, 2,378 were white<lb />and 749 were minorities.<lb /><lb />The participants with a<lb />physical or learning disability<lb />also represent a large number<lb />of the participants.<lb /><lb />Comprised of 76 questions<lb />and two open-ended questions,<lb />the survey covered informa-<lb />tion ranging from personal<lb /><lb />students<lb /><lb />experiences and perceptions of<lb />climate to institutional action<lb />and administrative policies.<lb />According to the climate<lb />survey results, 21 percent of<lb />the respondents had person-<lb />ally experienced offensive,<lb />hostile or intimidating con-<lb />duct that interfered unrea-<lb />sonably with their ability to<lb />work or learn on campus.<lb />However, most respondents<lb />indicated that they were ocom-<lb />fortable or overy comfortable <lb />with the overall climate at<lb />ECU:<lb />dhe. Survey. also<lb />revealed feelings that fac-<lb />ulty and staff have about<lb />their teaching environment.<lb />University staff often<lb /><lb /> oIt changes the way<lb />they learn since it Ts about<lb />problem solving, not just<lb />listening and absorbing. <lb /><lb />Video Game Night will<lb />be strictly console-based and<lb />online play will not be avail-<lb />able.<lb /><lb />There will not be an<lb />option for students to bring<lb />in their own consoles or<lb />games, but that is being<lb />considered for the future.<lb /><lb /> oIf this is successful<lb />then we'd like to have at<lb />least one more event in the<lb />spring, Sanders said.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />this week<lb /><lb />reported feeling deval-<lb />ued and underappreciated.<lb /><lb />Student and faculty<lb />perceptions of administra-<lb />tive. policies were also<lb />recorded from the survey.<lb /><lb />According to the results,<lb />30 percent of respondents<lb />reported that they had observed<lb />discriminatory hiring. .<lb /><lb />To decrease the amount of<lb />discrimination, some respon-<lb />dents of the survey said that<lb />ECU should include diversity-<lb />related activities as a require-<lb />ment for employment.<lb /><lb />To further improve othe<lb />climate at ECU, some staff<lb /><lb />see SURVEY page A3<lb /></p>

<lb />Ion |<lb /><lb />THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 20,2007 PAGE A4-<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />| struggled through the crossword in<lb />Thursday Ts paper... then | realized the<lb />answers were right below the puzzle.<lb /><lb />Din:<lb /><lb />{ Happy Thursday! }<lb /><lb />The homeless vs.<lb />unrelated roommates<lb /><lb />Attempting to understand the three<lb />unrelated-roommate law<lb /><lb />JESSICA DUNLOW<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />I think my ultimate dream (save being famous<lb />and rich) would be to live with my best friends for<lb />a year. We would throw the best parties, become<lb />closer than we are and just have a great time.<lb />Unfortunately, for me, I have like eight near and<lb />dears that I would love to live with, and the city<lb />tells me I cannot.<lb /><lb />Greenville is built around ECU and a major-<lb />ity of students are interested or live in houses<lb />near and surrounding campus. Alas, most of<lb /><lb />the houses near campus have either exactly three<lb /><lb />bedrooms or more.<lb /><lb />The freshmen, who probably have not dealt<lb />with this law before, should understand. Accord-<lb />ing to the City. of Greenville, no.more than<lb />three unrelated persons may reside in a home<lb />together.<lb /><lb />This is an odd thing to think about when we<lb />have dozens of sorority and fraternity houses<lb />with way more than three people ina home. How<lb />are their circumstances any different from those<lb />who just want to live with a group of friends?<lb />Why does the city seem to want to punish us for<lb />this desire?<lb /><lb />I can understand that they do not want us to <lb />live in brothels and live in squalor. Honestly, I<lb />am positive we are all going to take better care<lb />of a house than that.<lb /><lb />A source, whom is going to remain nameless<lb />to protect their living situation, is living with<lb />four of their friends and they claim that the city<lb />is just trying to oprotect their property value <lb />with the law, but it is really hurting their reputa-<lb />tion in the end.<lb /><lb />Apparently, the difference between a normal<lb />house and a Greek house is that they are zoned<lb />as a omulti-family home whereas most normal<lb />houses are not. Therefore, for those of you who<lb />live in those houses that are more than three<lb />bedrooms, you have the right to get it re-zoned<lb />since it is so big. It is unfair to live in fear of<lb />breaking your lease just because your house is<lb />not zoned correctly.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />A homeless<lb />college student?<lb /><lb />! - The ongoing debate concerning<lb />- housing laws in Greenville<lb /><lb />CALEB SEAMONE<lb />CONTRIBUTING WRITER ©<lb /><lb />When I decided to attend ECU, I understood<lb />that I was about to set off on an adventure that<lb />would be rewarding, but also tough and sometimes<lb />frustrating. However, I was not aware that I would<lb />have to worry about my classmates and myself<lb />being thrown out into the street by the City of<lb />Greenville.<lb /><lb />As you know, there is a housing ordinance,<lb />which states that no more than 3 unrelated persons<lb />are allowed to live in a house together. This does<lb />not apply to dorms, fraternity houses or apart-<lb />ments. The residential areas surrounding campus<lb />are composed largely of students, and the houses in<lb />that area are three to six bedrooms with multiple<lb />bathrooms. This is surely a better living arrange-<lb />ment than sharing a room with bunk beds and a<lb />hall with 50 other guys.<lb /><lb />Nonetheless, the city takes it upon itself<lb />to fine students breaking this ordinance and<lb />threatens to kick them on the streets. How is<lb />this fair? Why can Tt my friends enjoy their five-<lb />bedroom or three-bathroom home and pursue<lb />their education? There doesn Tt seem to be a<lb />problem with the sorority house next door.<lb />This is bad policy, and it is putting college students<lb />on the street. I know of three separate groups of<lb />students facing homelessness at the hands of the<lb />city. Drug dealers and illegal immigrants have<lb />more representation than the average ECU Pirate,<lb />and I think it Ts time someone stood up for us.<lb /><lb />So I Tm asking you to help me, and to help the<lb />students that put Greenville on the map. If you use only<lb /><lb />examples from the trip, you can still get your point<lb />across while, hopefully, not making her feel like a<lb />witch. After all, you can Tt make an enemy of the<lb />second-most important woman in you man Ts life,<lb />post-wedding.<lb /><lb />If you're not the type to go to an issue like a bull<lb />to a red cape, then you might try dropping subtle<lb />hints or steering the conversation in a favorable<lb />way toward yourself. How the heck did that blan-<lb />ket come to be under the dog instead of around<lb />your freezing shoulders? Think about asserting<lb />yourself.<lb /><lb />Also, talk to you fiance about how his mother<lb />makes you feel. He Ts on your side and her side, so<lb />I know it can be a hard line to walk for him, but<lb />if youre not comfortable talking to her about it<lb />and you put it to him in a non-threatening way,<lb />perhaps he might intercede for you to smooth<lb />things over.<lb /><lb />If you're not willing to do any of these things or<lb />don Tt think they Td be appropriate for your situation,<lb />you may have to learn to grin and bear it.<lb /><lb />Not liking your mother-in-law is a story as old<lb />as marriage, but it doesn Tt have to be your real-<lb />ity. Besides, what Ts going to happen when (if) she<lb />becomes grandmother to your children?<lb /><lb />Now is the time to put your foot down and let her<lb />know how her actions and words make you feel.<lb /><lb />Good luck,<lb />Jane<lb /><lb />Globalization:<lb />problem or solution?<lb /><lb />How a global world can affect your life<lb /><lb />ELISE PHILLIPS<lb />FEATURES EDITOR<lb /><lb />Everyday, Americans use products that were<lb />not made in the United States. When you get up<lb />in the morning, you could be brushing your teeth<lb />with toothpaste manufactured in Taiwan with<lb />a toothbrush made in China. Then you put on<lb />tennis shoes, whose leather could have been har-<lb />vested in Brazil, sent to Hong Kong to be stitched<lb />together with thread made in Africa, then sent to<lb />Dallas to be shipped all over the country.<lb /><lb />There Ts no doubt about it: our world is<lb />becoming increasingly more global, making the<lb />old adage of oit Ts a small world after all even<lb />more accurate.<lb /><lb />But is this globalization of the world a prob-<lb />lem or a solution?<lb /><lb />In 1999, hundreds of protestors in Seattle<lb />bombarded the place where the World Trade<lb />Organization (WTO) would be meeting. They<lb />blockaded the entrance of the building, adamantly<lb />refusing to let WTO representatives through to<lb />the meeting.<lb /><lb />They were all protesting the spread of big<lb />corporations throughout the world, which many<lb />times use sweatshops and slave labor to get their<lb />products made and shipped to places like the<lb />United States. They held signs like one with an<lb />arrow labeled odemocracy pointing one way and<lb /> oWTO? pointing the other way.<lb /><lb />The WTO meeting was consequently can-<lb />celled, due to the amount and extremes that these<lb />protestors were willing to go through.<lb /><lb />Big organizations defend their actions with<lb />the premise that they provide jobs to otherwise<lb />Jobless areas, and that they give a better life that<lb />people living in third world countries could have<lb />ever had. Or, they just lie.<lb /><lb />It Ts funny how large Americans corporations<lb />like Nike and Wal-Mart pay poor laborers pen-<lb />nies a day to make T-shirts and tennis shoes<lb />while the same companies lobby for raising the<lb />minimum wage regulations here in the U.S.,<lb />or claim to pay third world workers more than<lb />minimum wage.<lb /><lb />Human rights groups have been fighting for<lb />the rights of the ones who make toys and food in<lb />sub par conditions for practically nothing, and<lb />we all agree that the situation is wrong. Then<lb />we consume these same products.<lb /><lb />Many people can agree that bringing jobs<lb />to poor people in underdeveloped countries is<lb />good, but what about the conditions that these<lb />laborers work in?<lb /><lb />I think that few Americans really stop to ana-<lb />lyze the products that they use everyday. I mean,<lb />they don Tt look at the box that their cereal comes<lb />in and say, oI Tm not eating this because this card-<lb />board was made in a sweat shop in Indonesia. <lb /><lb />But maybe they should.<lb /><lb />The fact that the world is becoming smaller<lb />may increase trade with other countries and cause<lb />alliances that could provide beneficial goods and<lb />services to the United States, but forcing poor<lb />women and children to work 12 hour days for<lb />less than a dollar a day is not only un-American,<lb />but inhumane.<lb /><lb />Making a global world can have its benefits,<lb />but the world should be just that: global. Making<lb />a global world is different than making an<lb />American world, spreading American companies<lb />throughout the world while treating workers<lb />far less equally than American workers would<lb />be treated.<lb /><lb />I Tm not saying that the world shouldn Tt be<lb />more global. But I am saying that making the<lb />world global doesn Tt mean proliferating one<lb />country Ts ideals and values.<lb /><lb />Making the world a global community should<lb />be about promoting peace, equality and organi-<lb />zation.<lb /><lb />So next time you put on a pair of Nikes, buy a<lb />box of Raisin Bran or even use your toothbrush,<lb />you are experiencing globalization firsthand.<lb /><lb />It Ts not just a problem for politicians<lb />anymore.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Kimberly Bellamy Rachel King<lb />News Editor Opinion: Editor<lb />Greg Katski Ronnie Woodward<lb /><lb />Sports Editor Asst. Any of these options<lb />are available to anyone with<lb />locations on campus, accepting<lb />meals plans, Pirate Bucks, cash,<lb />Visa and MasterCard.<lb /><lb />However, some students<lb />are not convinced that healthy<lb />options are available on campus.<lb /><lb />ECU student Ashley Arens<lb />believes that the dining ser-<lb />vices at ECU do not provide<lb />adequate options for students<lb /><lb />who are vegetarians, and that<lb />much more can and should be<lb />offered.<lb /><lb /> oA lot of times they could<lb />alter a selection, like having<lb />certain types of sauce without<lb />the meat. If they just offered the<lb />same food, only slightly altered,<lb />it would accommodate me more,<lb />such as tofu or beans instead<lb /><lb />of meat, and maybe Silk [soy<lb /><lb />milk] instead of milk or dairy, <lb />Arens said. oAlso, I have been<lb />trying to cut out dairy and lean<lb />more towards a vegan diet, but<lb />it seems almost impossible if I<lb />plan on eating on campus and<lb />not spending an arm and a leg<lb />to purchase separate food at the<lb />Pirate Market. <lb /><lb />Students with alternative<lb />eating habits have an option<lb /><lb />PAGANISM continued from A5<lb /><lb />Christian belief of heaven. Like<lb />many other religions, various<lb />different kinds of pagan belief<lb />systems have rituals and tradi-<lb />tional ceremonies. Also, many<lb />pagans (especially Wiccans)<lb />may wear jewelry representing<lb />their faith, often a pentagram,<lb />much like Christians wear a<lb />cross to symbolize their faith, <lb />said Alison Williams, an ECU<lb />student who considers herself.<lb /><lb />. to be Pagan.<lb /><lb />Williams stated that she<lb />believes in ospiritual being with-<lb />out the confines and contradic-<lb />tions of organized religion. <lb /><lb /> oI am drawn to nature. |<lb />believe that there are energies<lb />that exist within nature and<lb />between humans. I also really<lb />identify with Buddhist philoso-<lb />phy and beliefs, she said.<lb /><lb />There are different branches<lb />of Paganism, like the Asatru, a<lb />belief system based on old<lb />Norse religion, Native Ameri-<lb />can spirituality and Hellenic<lb />polytheists who follow the<lb />gods and goddesses of ancient<lb />Greece. Wicca is also a branch<lb />of Paganism followed by some,<lb />established in the 1970s and<lb />based on a goddess and god.<lb /><lb />Some Pagans are true poly-<lb />theists, believing in many sepa=<lb />rate gods and goddesses. Then<lb />there are some who believe that<lb />the gods and goddesses found<lb />in religions across the globe<lb />are just different faces of one<lb />supreme divine entity.<lb /><lb />There is no book of set<lb />morals instated by a divinity<lb />within Paganism.<lb /><lb /> oOne of the things I took<lb />with me when I moved on<lb />from that patriarchal dogmatic<lb />religious tradition is that Jesus<lb />Christ stated that humans are<lb />created in the image and like-<lb />ness of God. This means that<lb />we all have within us a spark<lb />of divinity that, if we are still<lb />and listen to that divine spark,<lb />provides us with the wisdom,<lb />strength and courage to make<lb />the best decisions for ourselves,<lb />each other, and our world, said<lb />Lynn Caverly, Marketing Man-<lb />ager in the Division of Student<lb />Life at ECU. oPersonally I<lb />follow a Gnostic spiritual path<lb />that is grounded in honoring<lb />the Divine Feminine. <lb /><lb />A few common miscon-<lb />ceptions about Paganism are<lb />that Pagans worship Satan,<lb /><lb />on campus, but according to<lb />Eubanks, comments and sug-.<lb />gestions are always open. Sur-<lb />veys, comment cards, focus<lb />groups and contact by email<lb />and phone are always avail-<lb />able options for students and<lb />faculty to tell Campus Dining<lb />directly what their needs are<lb />and what they would like to see<lb />change. . Using this will enable<lb />the dining services to better<lb />serve the students and meet<lb />the needs and preferences of.<lb />the customer.<lb /><lb />To make a comment or sug-<lb />gestion, you can send an email<lb />to Campus Dining at dining@<lb />ecu.edu.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />put spells on people and are<lb />cultists.<lb /><lb />However, Pagans do not wor-<lb />ship Satan; a pagan who believes<lb />in Satan, or an evil force in the<lb />universe of Satanic proportions,<lb />is virtually unheard of. °<lb /><lb /> oT feel that organized reli-<lb />gious have created conditions<lb />that separate humans from<lb />[one] another. Don Tt let ECU hang around<lb /><lb />Under Skip Holtz, the Pirates have played<lb />West Virginia very well, despite being heavy<lb />underdogs. When the two teams met in Mor-<lb />gantown two years ago, ECU had the ball at<lb />midfield down only five points when time<lb />expired. Last season in Greenville, the game<lb />was within one possession until WVU receiver<lb />Darius Reynaud put the game out of reach<lb />with a 60-yard touchdown reception in the<lb />fourth quarter. The Mountaineers need to put<lb />the game away early and not let ECU have a<lb />chance of an upset like it has in years past.<lb /><lb />2. Avoid the trap game T scenario<lb /><lb />The Mountaineers are coming off an impres-<lb />sive Thursday night ESPN win over Maryland,<lb />and have a huge game at South Florida next<lb />week. The only problem is, they have a game<lb />in-between that is a classic scenario for an<lb />emotional letdown. Next week Ts WVU-USF<lb />game should feature two top-20 undefeated<lb />teams competing for a Big East and pos-<lb />sible national championship, but in order<lb />for that to happen, WVU needs to focus on<lb />ECU this week and take care of business.<lb /><lb />3. Use the speed advantage<lb />WVU is one of the fastest teams in the na-<lb /><lb />tion. The Mountaineers have two Heis- -<lb /><lb />man Trophy candidates in quarterback Pat<lb />White and running back Steve Slaton, an<lb />extremely explosive freshman running back<lb />in Noel Devine and a playmaker at receiver<lb />in Darius Reynaud. Head Coach Rich Rodri-<lb /><lb />. guez needs to use his plethora of speedy,<lb /><lb />explosive playmakers on offense, exploit-<lb />ing ECU Ts inability to stop the big play.<lb /><lb />RODRIGUEZ<lb /><lb /> oThey're very, very active and they<lb />pose a lot of problems. We Tve had<lb />a hard time running the football<lb />against them the last two years. <lb /><lb />Pirates have long-standing history with West Virginia<lb /><lb />JARED JACKSON<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />Perhaps the third time will be the charm for ECU football Head Coach<lb />Skip Holtz and his Pirates. ECU (1-2) heads back on the road to play No.<lb />5 West Virginia (3-0) this Saturday at Mountaineer Field in Morgantown,<lb />W. Va., broadcasted on ESPN2. The Pirates have come agonizingly close to<lb />knocking off the Mountaineers since Holtz T arrival, suffering a 20-15 loss<lb />two years ago in Morgantown and a 27-10 setback last year in Greenville<lb />that was closer than the score indicates.<lb /><lb />Inlast year Ts contest, ECU held W VU to nearly 200 yards under its season rush-<lb />ing average, and in 20065 the Pirates only allowed 127 yards on the ground. Holtz<lb />knows that stopping the Mountaineers rushing attack a third time will be tough.<lb /><lb /> oThis is a game that has been hard-fought the last two years, as we lost<lb />20-15 up there two years ago and played them very close here last season, <lb />Holtz said. oI know it Ts going to be a tall order trying to slow down their<lb />running game for a third consecutive year. <lb /><lb />The dynamic duo of junior quarterback Pat White and halfback Steve<lb />Slaton has provided the Mountaineers with one of the best one-two punches<lb />in college football over the last two years. However, it has been halfback fresh-<lb />man sensation Noel Devine that has put the WVU offense in overdrive.<lb /><lb />Devine, a Florida native, has provided the perfect compliment to the Heis-<lb /><lb />man Trophy hopeful Slaton. Last week against Maryland, Devine displayed<lb /><lb />his full arsenal of skills as he racked up 136 rushing yards on just five carries.<lb /><lb />In comparison, Slaton amassed 137 yards on 26 carries.<lb /><lb /> oI have had the opportunity to coach our team against White and Slaton<lb />for the past two years said Holtz. oI think they have great talent, speed and<lb />athleticism. If you add Devine to the mix, he may be better than Slaton, as<lb />he is averaging 15 yards-per-carry. <lb /><lb />It Ts no secret that the Mountaineers like to run the ball and have great<lb />talent in Devine and Slaton. However, perhaps the most overlooked player in<lb />the country and also a Heisman Trophy candidate is White. He has thrown<lb />for four touchdowns and 436 yards, while rushing for 244 and adding four<lb />more touchdowns.<lb /><lb /> oEveryone tries to do things schematically against their running game, <lb />Holtz said. oWhat we have done the past two years is stick with what we<lb />know. We will have to play fast, run to the ball and tackle in the open field.<lb />More than anything, if you have a mistake in the secondary, it ends up being<lb />a long day.<lb /><lb /> oThey have the breakaway speed that not many people can catch because<lb />they make you defend the whole field due to the option. We have challenged<lb />our players to play base defense but our secondary is not as experienced as it<lb />has been in years past, so our guys will have to step to the challenge. <lb /><lb />In order to beat the Mountaineers, ECU will undoubtedly have to shut<lb />down the trio of White, Slaton and Devine. Until last week the Pirates<lb />seemed capable of handling such a tall order, but after a 28-21 loss at home<lb />to Southern Miss in which ECU surrendered 146 rushing yards, beating the<lb />Mountaineers can be compared to climbing Mount Everest.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts time to start holding people accountable Holtz said sternly. oWe are<lb />in the midst of discussing some changes right now at a couple of positions. If<lb />we can't create a winner three weeks in a row it Ts time to ask if we are play-<lb />ing with the right people. <lb /><lb />Holtz believes his player Ts efforts do match the Pirates T record.<lb /><lb /> oThey have worked harder than they ever have before and we are closer<lb />than we have ever been, but when you look at the record we are still 1-2, he<lb />said. oWe have to keep pushing forward in our attempt to get better. <lb /><lb />Even though ECU is coming off a C-USA loss last week, it doesn Tt change<lb />WVU head coach Rich Rodriquez T perception of the Pirates.<lb /><lb /> oThey will play for the Conference USA championship, mark it down, <lb />Rodriquez told Scout.com. oThis is a good football team, and one that will<lb />win a lot of games...they have the best group of athletes we have played all<lb />year. The way they played us the last couple years, it will probably be in the<lb />same vein.<lb /><lb />ECU kicker Ben Hartman has had a rough start to the season, going 2-<lb />for-6 in field goal attempts. Hartman Ts misses have all come in the less than<lb />40-yard range. Punter Matt Dodge has also had his share of difficulties. While<lb />Dodge is averaging almost 42 yards a punt, he has lacked the consistency<lb />that Holtz would like to see.<lb /><lb /> oI think we need to get more consistent on both sides because two out of<lb />six field goals is not acceptable, said Holtz. oEspecially when all but one<lb />of the kicks have been inside the 20...both [Murphy] Paderick and Dodge<lb />will compete with Hartman for the kicking duties...we need to put that com-<lb />petition into our practice so that we can find out who will be ready to play<lb /><lb />_ against West Virginia. <lb /><lb />Don Tt be surprised if a lot of new faces pop up in the game on Saturday.<lb />Holtz is dedicated to doing what it takes to win and if changes have to be<lb />made then they will be. The Pirates were looking at a 2-1 start to the season<lb />late in the third quarter last Saturday, but are now starring at 1-3 start for<lb />the second consecutive year.<lb /><lb />Desperate times call for desperate measures, pp oally when it comes to winning.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb /> oECU currently ranks 100th in the nation in<lb /><lb />KEYS 10<lb />THE GAME<lb /><lb />1. Contain the Mountaineers rushing<lb />attack<lb /><lb />West Virginia is known for one thing, and that<lb />is running the football. Pat White, Steve Sla-<lb />ton and Noel Devine have combined for over<lb />800 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns in<lb /><lb />three games this season. WVU is averaging<lb />almost 344 yards a game on the ground in<lb />comparison to only 157 through the air. The<lb /><lb />Pirates have limited the WVU rushing attack<lb /><lb />the last two years and a third is a must if ECU<lb /><lb />hopes to pull off the upset.<lb /><lb />2. Improve the secondary play<lb /><lb />ECU has struggled defending the pass this<lb />season. Last week against Southern Miss,<lb />the Pirates gave up 237 passing yards,<lb />including passes of 41, 38 and 28 yaris.<lb /><lb />pass defense, allowing 275 yards per game<lb />through the air. The Pirates have to limit<lb />yardage though the air or like in the 06<lb />game against WVU, it could be a long pass<lb />that ultimately seals their fate.<lb /><lb />3. Special teams<lb />ECU kicker Ben Hartman has only made two<lb />of his six field goal attempts this year. Most<lb /><lb />shockingly is that all of his attempts have.<lb /><lb />been less than 40 yards in length. Punter<lb />Matt Dodge has averaged almost 42 yards a<lb />punt this year, but has been rather inconsis-<lb />tent. The Pirates will have to make most of<lb />their red zone opportunities this weekend and<lb />that could mean multiple field goals. Also,<lb />field position is always of most importance<lb />when playing a heavily ranked team such as<lb />West Virginia, so punting the ball deep into<lb />opponents T territory will also be important.<lb /><lb />SID<lb /><lb />HOLTZ<lb /><lb /> oWe will find out how we handle<lb />adversity and whether or not we are<lb />emotionally tough enough to deai<lb />with the caliber of our schedule.<lb /><lb />SuamieaeasaasaEc<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />PAGE A10<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />JOHNSON continued from AQ<lb /><lb />Running back Chris Johnson (5) finds a seam against S. Miss. In open space Johnson can be explosive.<lb /><lb />ning backs coach here at ECU, <lb />Smith said. oI didn Tt really look<lb />into it [at Louisiana-Monroe],<lb />but getting here and working<lb />with him that spring [during<lb />practices], I was impressed with<lb />his speed and ability to learn the<lb />game. He Ts a kid that learns fast.<lb />You tell him something one time<lb />and he picks it up immediately.<lb />He Ts a very intelligent kid. <lb /><lb />Johnson Ts versatility and<lb />football IQ has enabled him to<lb />be an integral part of the Pirate<lb />offense and special teams since<lb />arriving in 2004, and has led to<lb />conference accolades and some<lb />well-earned spots in the ECU<lb />football record books.<lb /><lb />The most prestigious of<lb />records that Johnson now holds<lb />is ECU Ts all-time leader in all-<lb />purpose yards. Although John-<lb />son broke the record in a crushing<lb />loss to conference rival South-<lb />ern Miss, Holtz is still proud<lb />of the veteran running back.<lb /><lb /> oTm just really proud of him<lb />and happy for him, he Ts earned<lb />it, said Holtz.<lb /><lb />Johnson views it as an honor<lb />to break the record of a legend-<lb />ary Pirate like Anthony Collins.<lb />Collins was a scholarship athlete<lb />with ECU from 1977-1980 and<lb />still holds numerous Pirate<lb />football records, including<lb />the most career kickoff return<lb />yards by an ECU player (1,939),<lb />yards per play in a season (7.34<lb />average in 1980) and longest<lb />kickoff return (100 yards).<lb /><lb /> oIt always feels good to set<lb />an all-time record. I just know<lb />Anthony Collins was a good<lb />player here and to break his record<lb />it feels real good, said Johnson.<lb /><lb />Johnson almost broke<lb />another of Collins T records<lb />when he returned a kickoff 96-<lb />yards against Southern Miss<lb />last season, falling four yards<lb />short of the record.<lb /><lb /> oIt just shows another thing<lb />to the people on the next level,<lb />to the NFL, that I can be ver-<lb />satile and I can do everything, <lb />said Johnson<lb /><lb />Johnson broke the record<lb />with 120 all-purpose yards in<lb />the game, but had a career game<lb />the week before against hated<lb />rival UNC. Johnson scored<lb />three touchdowns against the<lb />Tar Heels, with one coming on<lb />a 78-yard screen pass.<lb /><lb />Big plays like this have<lb />become routine for Johnson.<lb />Smith, his coach and mentor,<lb />attributes this to the type of<lb />skills he possesses.<lb /><lb /> oHe Ts more of a speed guy; -<lb /><lb />slasher type guy, said Smith.<lb /> oHe likes to compare himself<lb />to a Marshall Faulk or Reggie<lb />Bush, those types of players that<lb />you can line up in different posi-<lb />tions and use their speed as an<lb />asset and make big plays...He Ts<lb />more of a third down back;<lb />throw it to him out of the back-<lb />field and let him make plays. <lb />Johnson Ts accomplishments<lb />have not come without hard work<lb />in the film room and on the field.<lb /> oHe Ts really made a consci-<lb />entious effort of doing all the<lb />small things right and paying<lb />attention to detail, said Smith.<lb /> oWhether it Ts coming over to<lb />watch extra film or being in<lb />the meeting rooms prepared<lb />with all of his supplies, taking<lb />good notes, being a leader<lb />on the field. Preparation has<lb />allowed him to do some good<lb />things to help the offense. <lb />Johnson, listed at 5-foot-<lb />11, 195 pounds, has also<lb />made great strides physi-<lb />cally as a running back since<lb />starting as a true freshman.<lb /> oHe Ts a guy that loves to<lb />work out. He loves the game of<lb />football and understands that<lb />to be able to play the position<lb /><lb />you have to be able to take |<lb /><lb />the punishment, so he made a<lb />commitment in the off-season<lb />to stay up here [in Greenville]<lb />both sessions of summer school<lb />and work out two times a day<lb />to get himself prepared to have<lb />a good year, said Smith. oHe Ts<lb />really made a conscientious<lb />effort of eating right and work-<lb />ing out and trying to handle it<lb />like a business. <lb /><lb />Johnson recalls his small<lb />stature as a true freshman,<lb />and believes that the game-<lb />day experience helped him to<lb />become a more versatile back.<lb /><lb /> oI think it helped a lot,<lb />because even with me coming in<lb />[to ECU], I was real small, so I<lb />had to be able to catch the ball<lb />out of the backfield and contrib-<lb />ute on special teams, so I think<lb />that helped me big my freshman<lb />year, said Johnson.<lb /><lb />Johnson currently holds<lb />the record for receiving yards<lb />by a running back, totaling 96<lb />catches for 933 yards.<lb /><lb />With his place firmly<lb />cemented among legendary<lb />Pirates, Johnson has set some<lb />even loftier standards.<lb /><lb /> oWhile it is Johnson Ts dream<lb />to play in the NFL, his mind and<lb />will are focused on the task at hand<lb />with ECU. Even with the tough<lb />loss to Southern Miss, Johnson<lb />believes that the goals the team set<lb />out for this year are still intact.<lb /><lb /> oWe're going for the state<lb />championship T. We've already<lb />beat North Carolina, so beating<lb />N.C. State will help us accom-<lb />plish that goal; and then we're<lb />going for a conference champi-<lb />onship. We lost a hard one this<lb />week, but it Ts still a long season<lb />and we've got a chance of being<lb />conference champs. <lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />| Student plere*:<lb /><lb />| student Store.
