Recognition<lb />of the day began at.ECU in 2005.<lb /><lb />Senator Robert Byrd of West<lb />Virginia proposed this legisla-<lb />tion after he learned in a national<lb />poll that people in the U.S.<lb />knew more about American Idol<lb />than the Constitution.<lb /><lb /> oConstitution Day was set<lb />up to educate people about the<lb />Constitution and the rights that it<lb />gives them, ? said Laura Amerson,<lb />graduate assistant in the office of<lb /><lb />co-curricular programs and cul-<lb /><lb />tural outreach.<lb /> oEverything in the Constitu-9<lb /><lb />tion affects students daily whether &<lb />they realize it or not. If you are going to<lb />enjoy the rights that are granted to<lb /><lb />ewyou,by, the Constitution, you need<lb /><lb />to educate yourself about exactly<lb />what those rights are. ?<lb /><lb />In honor of Constitution<lb />Day, Joyner Library hosted three<lb />exhibits to recognize the history<lb />of the U.S.<lb /><lb /> oAmendment VI: Trial by<lb />Jury, T which was presented by the<lb />Special Collections Department,<lb />began yesterday and will be up in<lb />MSC through September 23.<lb /><lb />The reproductions of histori-<lb />cal materials from the Manuscript<lb />Collection in the exhibit.were<lb /><lb />assembled together by graduate<lb />student Adrienne Rae and faculty<lb />advisor Jonathan Dembo.<lb /><lb />The items in this exhibit<lb />will educate students about<lb />how the right to trial by jury<lb />works in the Sixth Amendment<lb />of the Constitution.<lb /><lb /> oThe items in this exhibit<lb />were chosen from the Manu-<lb />script Collection and illustrate<lb />the workings of the constitution<lb />here in Eastern North Carolina, ?<lb />Dembo said.<lb /><lb />Free Jena Six committee formed<lb />to battle racial tensions<lb /><lb />Members of the Free Jena Six committee collect donations and spread awareness about racial tension in Jena, LA.<lb /><lb />Group works to stop<lb />racial discrimination<lb /><lb />NIA RICHARDSON<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />Students at ECU have joined<lb />the grassroots movement that is<lb />sweeping the nation in support of<lb />a group of six black high school<lb />students, who after beating a white<lb />classmate are facing charges that<lb />many have deemed unjust.<lb /><lb />The young men, Mychal Bell,<lb />17, Theodore Shaw, 17, Carwin<lb />Jones, 18, Robert Bailey, 17,<lb />Bryant Pervis, 17 and an uniden-<lb />tified juvenile, have been dubbed<lb />the oJena Six. ?<lb /><lb />Many schools, churches and<lb />organizations have gathered in<lb />support of the Jena Six including<lb />a group of students representing<lb />the NAACP, Black Student Union<lb />and Cultural Awareness.<lb /><lb />All of these groups have com-<lb /><lb /> bined to create the Free Jena Six<lb /><lb />Committee (FJ6) at ECU.<lb /><lb />The committee has organized<lb />a full campaign in support of the<lb />Jena 6 to raise awareness in the<lb /><lb />local community about what is<lb /><lb />happening in Jena, La.<lb /><lb />The Free Jena Six Campaign<lb />kicked off with ordering t-shirts<lb />at the Ledonia Wright Cultural<lb />Center on Sept. 11 and will end<lb />with a rally Thursday Sept. 20,<lb /><lb />the same day that Bell will face<lb />sentencing for his conviction.<lb /><lb />The peaceful rally will be held<lb />on Mendenhall Student Center's<lb />Brickyard from 8:45-10: 30 a.m..<lb /><lb />Students that attend are asked<lb />to wear black along with other pro-<lb />testers across the country because<lb />the NAACP has designated the<lb />day as National Protest Day.<lb /><lb />On Wednesday, Sept. 12, the<lb />FJ6 held a public forum to inform<lb />the student body on the Jena Six<lb />case and to encourage everyone to<lb />get involved.<lb /><lb />The case is a breaking point<lb />caused by a profusion of racially<lb />charged acts of violence amongst<lb />black and white students ofJena high<lb />school and citizens in Jena, La.<lb /><lb />In the fall of 2007, two black<lb />students sat beneath a shade tree<lb />that was a popular hangout for<lb />white students.<lb /><lb />The next day, nooses were<lb />hung in the tree. The act was<lb />dismissed by the school superin-<lb />tendent as a prank, which resulted<lb />in protest by the students and<lb />their community.<lb /><lb />The District Attorney did<lb />nothing about the acts of violence<lb />that white citizens committed<lb />against black citizens following<lb />the end of the protests.<lb /><lb />However, when six black<lb /><lb />students in the schoolyard<lb />beat a white student, the DA<lb />charged them with second-degree<lb /><lb />attempted murder and conspiracy<lb />to commit murder, despite the fact<lb />that the white student Ts injuries<lb />were not serious.<lb /><lb />The story of the Jena 6 has<lb />sparked outrage across the coun-<lb />try, as it has been compared to the<lb />blatant unjust treatment of blacks<lb />in the judicial system during the<lb />days of Jim Crow laws.<lb /><lb />The civil rights movement<lb />is not over, according to David<lb />Dennard, professor of African-<lb />American studies and main<lb />speaker at the forum.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts harder to identify racism<lb />and sexism today as it was in the<lb />1950s and 1960s, ? said Dennard.<lb /> oIf you see a problem, roll up your<lb />sleeves and see what you can do. ?<lb /><lb />Gathering support from the<lb />community is the primary focus<lb />of the FJ6 Committee.<lb /><lb /> oIt is unbelievable on this<lb />campus how many people do not<lb />know about the Jena Six, ? said<lb />Kyndall Peele, FJ6 Committee<lb />member. oThe greatest way to get<lb />the word out is word of mouth. ?<lb /><lb />Over the course of the cam-<lb />paign, the FJ6é Committee will<lb />distribute information about the<lb />Jena Six, hold a town hall meeting<lb />to discuss the problems of racism<lb />in the judicial system and collect<lb />donations to aid the Free Jena Six<lb />Defense fund.<lb /><lb /> oThis committee is about<lb />action. We can do anything, ?<lb /><lb />said Jessica Ledbetter, founder<lb />of the FJ6 Committee.<lb /><lb /> oWe have to show in num-<lb />bers that we will not stand for<lb />what's happening in Jena. ?<lb /><lb />Another objective of the FJ6<lb />Committee is to turn the focus<lb />of the Jena Six away from being<lb />solely a black-versus-white issue<lb />and shed light on how it impacts<lb />citizens of all backgrounds.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts about fairness, ? said Jen-<lb />nifer Nnamani, FJ6 Committee<lb />member. oIf they are successful<lb />in locking them up it will cause a<lb />domino effect [for other racially<lb />related issues ]. ?<lb /><lb /> oIf injustice comes to the<lb />Jena Six, it will come to me. LEWIS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />I'll probably vote Republican for President next<lb />year. No big deal. I Tve done it for the past three, and<lb />the so-called otop tier ? Democratic candidates haven't<lb />done a thing to convince me to do otherwise.<lb /><lb />We've got Hillary Clinton, the former first<lb />lady who rode her husband Ts coattails to a Senate<lb />seat. If eight years on the sidelines in the White<lb />House qualifies you for the U.S. Senate, that eleva-<lb />tor operator who was there for 40 years should be<lb />King of the World. :<lb /><lb />Then there Ts Barack Obama. Many of the very<lb />people who claimed George W. Bush wasn Tt quali-<lb />fied to be President after only six years as governor<lb />of the second largest state in the nation think this<lb />guy is the second coming of George Washington<lb />after only three years as one of 100 senators.<lb /><lb />And don Tt forget John Edwards. He did so much<lb />for North Carolina, after all, he surely deserves a<lb />shot to screw up the whole country. He gets $400<lb />haircuts and claims to relate to the poor. I had to<lb />roll up some pennies to pay for my last $12 haircut.<lb />That Ts relating to the poor.<lb /><lb />There is, however, one Democrat who has been<lb />shut out by the national media Ts fascination with<lb />the aforementioned three stooges. The more I<lb />learn about him, the more I like him. New Mexico<lb />Governor Bill Richardson is the one Democrat I<lb />could support, and I Tm beginning to think he, more<lb />than any other candidate of either party, has the<lb />right stuff to go all.the way.<lb /><lb />Richardson has 15 years. of experience in<lb />Congress, something the Big Three, particularly<lb />Obama, cannot boast: Before his election to the<lb />House in 1980, he worked at the State Department,<lb />and then was a staff member for the Senate Foreign<lb />Relations Committee.<lb /><lb />As a congressman, he met one-on-one with<lb />Saddam Hussein in 1995 to secure the release of<lb />two American civilian aerospace workers held<lb />prisoner in Iraq after accidentally crossing the<lb />border from Kuwait.<lb /><lb />In addition to Iraq, Richardson has also nego-<lb /><lb />tiated the release of hostages, American service -<lb /><lb />members and political prisoners from North Korea<lb />and Cuba. Earlier this year, he traveled to Sudan<lb />and brokered a cease-fire between President Omar<lb />al-Bashir and various rebel factions in Darfur.<lb />While that effort was to prove unsuccessful "<lb />through no fault of Gov. Richardson Ts " I can Tt help<lb />but think that a man who has earned the respect of<lb />even rogue dictators can surely restore the world Ts<lb />faith in America as an international leader.<lb /><lb />In 1997,-Richardson was able to capitalize<lb />on his foreign policy experience when President<lb />Clinton appointed him U.S: Ambassador to the<lb />United Nations, where he served for a year before<lb />becoming Secretary of Energy.<lb /><lb />As secretary, he implemented tough efficiency<lb />standards that saved consumers billions of dollars in<lb />energy costs. As governor, he has required energy<lb />companies to produce 10 percent of all energy from<lb />renewable resources, while reducing carbon emis-<lb />sions; and the state is moving toward 20 percent by<lb />providing incentives for solar, wind and biofuels. He<lb />has promised to do the same as president.<lb /><lb />Since being elected governor of one of the poor-<lb /><lb />est states in the nation in 2002, Richardson has |<lb /><lb />cut taxes, balanced the budget and created 84,000<lb />new jobs ... all without the benefit of'a $400 hairdo.<lb />His efforts have led right-of-center and libertarian<lb /><lb />. groups to praise him for reforming New Mexico's<lb /><lb />economy.<lb /><lb />The libertarian Cato Institute calls Richardson<lb /> oone of the most fiscally responsible Democratic<lb />governors in the nation. ?<lb /><lb />Governor Richardson has worked to provide<lb />affordable healthcare to all people in his state, and<lb />has cracked down on illegal immigration across the<lb />New Mexico border. i<lb /><lb />It is noteworthy that while Democratic front-<lb />runner Hillary is as polarizing a figure as the cur-<lb />rent President Bush, Gov. Richardson commands<lb />respect on both sides of the aisle. He was reelected<lb />in 2006, with 40 percent of the Republican vote.<lb />He had a good track record of getting things done<lb />in a bipartisan fashion while in Congress and<lb />he Ts worked with both parties in the New Mexico<lb />legislature to improve their state. His is the kind<lb />of leadership we desperately need in Washington.<lb /><lb />It Ts been said that Hillary and Obama are riding<lb />high because people want to say they made history<lb />by electing the first woman or the first black presi-<lb />dent. Okay ... if you're so shallow that that Ts the only<lb />reason you'll vote for somebody, issues be damned,<lb />vote to elect the first president of Hispanic descent.<lb /><lb />You not only will have made history, you'll have -<lb /><lb />voted for someone who knows what he's doing, isn Tt on<lb />an ego trip and has the experience and leadership to<lb />restore pride at home and respect around the world.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Sources include richardsonforpresident.com and Wikipedia.<lb /><lb />46<lb /><lb />Comics gare. ca<lb /><lb />k | }<lb />i Takers Media Sorerces<lb /><lb /> o| object, your honor! | request that the sight of<lb />opposing counsel in his tightie-whities<lb />be stricken from my memory! ?<lb /><lb />stay out of the deep end.<lb /><lb />uw AFRAID TO LEAVE THEI HOMES, NO PROTECTION, ROVING BANDS OF<lb /><lb />CRIMINALS, STIFLING HEAT, NO Al CONDITIONING,<lb />LOCAL GOVERNMENT! In cars, on floors, under everything. Pen-<lb />nies infest our lives at every corner and, besides<lb />throwing them at things or away, are mostly never<lb />used. Yet we still have them. The gift of the penny<lb />lies in its uselessness. It saves us from rounding up<lb />or down and they prevent us from just including tax<lb />in the price, leaving my poor-self attempting to do<lb />multiplication in the line at Harris Teeter.<lb /><lb />What is the point of a penny? When I find a<lb />penny on the street there is nothing on Earth that<lb />would make me think to pick up some stinky little<lb />circle of copper. The absurd idea of its luck doesn Tt<lb />make me think twice, either. Upon coming on a<lb />penny on my desk or the floor I either stare at it,<lb />knowing it could be there for months, or do the<lb />right thing and toss it in the trash.<lb /><lb />In fact I find it every American Ts duty to just<lb />throw away pennies. It is the right thing to do in<lb />order to force a logical solution to our retarded<lb />tax policies. Ifenough Americans just tossed away<lb />pennies maybe advertisements would stop thinking<lb />that o19.99 ? is fooling anyone. 19.99, 1.99, 2799.99,<lb />who in God Ts name is falling for this? Just include<lb />the friggin T tax so everyone can know if they have<lb />enough money.<lb /><lb />Countless times I will stare at DVDs, food,<lb />clothes and so on, foolishly thinking I have enough<lb />only to discover I went one or two dollars over my<lb />intended price range. In fact, twice I have gone<lb />into the negatives in my bank account because of,<lb />what else, several cents. If pennies didn Tt exist and<lb />I could look at a price knowing oHey, this is the<lb />exact price I am going to pay, ? maybe I could avoid<lb />ever owing the bank money.<lb /><lb />Maybe I am missing the point of pennies. Per-<lb />haps the whole point of a penny is to screw everyone<lb />over and so it will never go away. If you just look<lb />at what I have written in another light you can see<lb />how companies can get more money. When I think<lb />something is not so much because it is 19.99 then,<lb />beyond being an idiot, I help the company advertis-<lb />ing. If tax would be included maybe everyone would<lb />have too much freewill. Knowing how much you<lb />are paying for something might be too much for<lb />the average American. I can understand this since<lb />people in this country still have the sense to pay for<lb />a oBullet Blender ? or oListen Up ? because it says<lb />it is only two payments of 9.99. More zeroes, bad.<lb />Less zeroes, good.<lb /><lb />What I really don Tt understand is why, at movie<lb />theaters, tax is included? Everything at a theater<lb />is logically based on quarters, nickels and dimes.<lb />How did the movie industry get the go-ahead on<lb />abolishing pennies? It is almost as if I am paying<lb />tax when I see a movie so I continue to throw<lb />away pennies. Here is another thought to include<lb />tax: What if gas didn Tt have tax included? Oh wait<lb />that would be oautastic ? considering how much tax<lb />goes into gas, so based on that system why isn Tt tax<lb />included in everything else? If I went to buy gas<lb />and it only cost me four dollars for ten gallons until<lb />it included tax after pumping, I would be royally<lb />screwed. All the same, considering if I only have<lb />$21 and I go to the grocery store, see my price<lb />is $20.35, and then see the price including tax I<lb />would become screwed for gas and food. What is<lb />the point of excluding it?<lb /><lb />American businesses can easily ease out of the<lb />penny so easily too. At a coffee shop back in Apex,<lb /><lb /> oThe Coffeehouse, ? the owner set all of his prices in<lb /><lb />an odd arrangement so that when tax was included,<lb />everything would come out with a five or a zero,<lb />knocking all pennies out of the equation. Here is a<lb />true American Patriot who is taking the right steps<lb />towards sticking it to the American Mints.<lb /><lb />I am not sure if this problem will ever end,<lb />short answer no, but steps can be taken. If anyone<lb />reading this is a future entrepreneur just remem-<lb />ber that coffee shop owner and do the math right.<lb />However, until the day where these people run their<lb />own businesses and we can all live in this utopia<lb />we must put a stop to all of it. However, Klosterman has a dorky<lb />and sincere view of his life and the lives of<lb />others through pop culture.<lb /><lb />The book begins with a otrack listing ? of the<lb />eighteen chapters, which include titles like oBeing<lb />Zack Morris, ? o oThe Awe Inspiring Beauty of Tom<lb />Cruise Ts Shattered, Troll-like Face, ? and oPorn. ?<lb />Within these chapters, Klosterman breaks down<lb />things that helped to mold Generation X and<lb />created Generation Y.<lb /><lb />For instance, the creation of MT V Ts The Real<lb />World, Saved by the Bell and Beverly Hills, 90210<lb />changed the way a generation acted and perceived ~<lb />adults and rules. Klosterman also spends 13<lb />pages praising Billy Joel for being so un-cool and<lb />ridiculing critics for calling soccer the next big<lb /><lb />throw together a<lb />group of essays that<lb />sort-of has the same<lb />theme and tone for<lb />a book, which is what this is. Wernert notched<lb />double-digit kills in all three<lb />tournament matches to give her<lb />double-digits in her last 42 of 46<lb />matches. The Pirates improve<lb />their record to 9-6, having won<lb />seven of their last eight matches,<lb /><lb />while Howard falls to 0-10 and<lb />Hartford to 6-7. In addition<lb />to Wernert Ts honors, junior<lb />Trish Monroe and sophomore<lb />Melissa Zentner were named<lb />to the All-Tournament Team.<lb /><lb />In game one against the<lb />Bison, ECU assumed leads of<lb />11-4, 19-10 and 23-13 on its<lb />way to a 30-14 win and a 1-0<lb />match lead. ECU would not<lb />sit on the lead as it raced to a<lb />12-1 advantage in game two,<lb />forcing a timeout. The break<lb />would do no good for Howard<lb />as the Pirates cruised to a 30-17<lb />win in the frame. ECU had no<lb />trouble closing out the Bison,<lb />taking leads of 11-3 and 20-7 on<lb />its way to pummeling Howard<lb /><lb />30-10.to close the contest.<lb /><lb />Wernert and Zentner both<lb />put down double-digit kills for<lb />the second-consecutive match<lb />while Wernert also led the<lb />defense, digging up nine balls.<lb />Freshman Katie Koop handed<lb />out 35. assists and the Pirates<lb />held the Bison to just 21 kills<lb />for the match. ECU also won<lb />the battle at the net, recording<lb />eight and a half blocks to four for<lb />Howard. Additionally, Howard<lb />was held to a negative hitting<lb />percentage of -.048.<lb /><lb />Looking for the tourna-<lb />ment title, the Pirates jumped<lb />out to a 13-7 lead in game one<lb />against the Hawks.
