Instead, a student is allowed<lb /><lb />lum changes<lb /><lb /> to choose a curriculum of structured<lb /><lb /> oagain for several years, Cabacar said.<lb /><lb />electives if they do not wish to have a<lb />minor.<lb /><lb />Some students think that the changes<lb />in the degree requirements will help<lb />them succeed in their concentration.<lb /><lb /> oForeign languages just aren't my<lb />thing. I Td rather spend more class time<lb />in my concentration classes learning |<lb />about what it is I Tm going to do when I |<lb />graduate, said Hart Holloman, junior |<lb />communication major.<lb /><lb />According to Cabacars many students<lb />were shying away from public relations<lb />but are coming back now that they do<lb />not have to take the extra foreign lan-<lb />guage.<lb /><lb />Six concentration areas will still be |<lb />available but some of the programs have<lb />been renamed. i<lb /><lb />Communication studies is now called |<lb />interpersonal/organizational commu- |<lb />nication. i<lb /><lb /> oWe reevaluated changing the name<lb />because it makes a little more sense, <lb />Cabacar said. oThe concentration empha-<lb />sizes the importance of communication,<lb />especially in business settings. <lb /><lb />Media production went through many<lb />changes to keep up with the changing<lb />technology, according to Cabacar.<lb /><lb /> oWe had to think about what the<lb />industry is using and new equipment. You<lb />have to be able to do more now, especially<lb />when dealing with the different aspects of<lb />editing and producing, Cabacar said.<lb /><lb />- The last curriculum revision in the |<lb />SchoolofCommunication was five years ago.<lb /><lb /> oWe try not to revise the curriculum<lb /><lb />too often. It probably won't be T revised<lb /><lb />Students following the older course<lb />catalog Ts curriculum can switch to the<lb />revised curriculum by stopping by the<lb />Academic Advising Office.<lb WRITER<lb /><lb />On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the<lb />ECU College of Business began<lb />an intensive review course to help<lb />students prepare for the Gradu-<lb />ate Record Examination (GRE).<lb /><lb />The GRE is a standardized<lb />test, similar to the SAT that is an<lb />admissions requirement for most<lb />graduate schools in the U.S.<lb /><lb /> oStudents that want to go<lb />to graduate school, not in busi-<lb />ness but in most other areas,<lb />need to take the GRE because<lb />it is required for entrance<lb />into many graduate pro-<lb />grams, said Mark McCar-<lb />thy, professor of accounting.<lb /><lb />- The four-week GRE prep<lb />course, which takes place from<lb />6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays<lb />and Thursdays, is designed to<lb />help students review materials<lb />that will be on the exam.<lb /><lb />Students will learn test<lb />taking strategies, study tips<lb />and how to prepare for the<lb />verbal as well as math sections<lb />of the test.<lb /><lb /> oThis course will help refresh<lb /><lb />students on information hat<lb />they learned in high school but<lb />probably haven't seen in a while, <lb />McCarthy said.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts a refresher on a lot of<lb />material that they haven't done<lb />in a long time and it will give<lb />students some experience with<lb />the kind of questions that will<lb />be asked on the exam. <lb /><lb />Students may gain other<lb /><lb />advantages from taking the<lb />o<lb /><lb />GRE prep course as well, accord-<lb /><lb />ing to Elaine Seeman, assistant |<lb /><lb />professor of management infor-<lb />mation systems<lb /> oOne of the main aspects of?<lb /><lb />being a good test taker is to have S<lb /><lb />confidence in yourself and not be<lb />afraid of the exam, Seeman said.<lb /><lb /> oBy taking this course stu-<lb />dents will know what to study,<lb />be familiar with the kind of<lb />questions that are on the test<lb />and hopefully will gain confi-<lb />dence in their abilities because<lb />they will know what to expect.<lb />I think people will do better on<lb />the exam if they aren't scared to<lb />death of it. <lb /><lb />The prep course will be<lb />taught using a mixture of lec-<lb />ture, conversation, hands-on<lb />work and discussion.<lb /><lb />see GRE page A3<lb /><lb /> Student awareness of parking<lb /><lb />regulations may limit <lb />THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 13, 2007 paGE A4 -~<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />Let Ts hear it for the Pirate Nation! Wear<lb />your purple and gold on Friday! Bring<lb /><lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />{ Wheredo you stand? }<lb /><lb />Pinkney is best<lb />for the Pirates<lb /><lb />Pinkney fits the mold of an ECU<lb />quarterback<lb /><lb />RONNIE WOODWARD<lb />ASST. SPORTS EDITOR<lb /><lb />Jeff Blake, Marcus Crandall, David Garrard,<lb />James Pinkney...Patrick Pinkney?<lb /><lb />About this time two weeks ago, the ECU<lb />campus thought the sky was falling when start-<lb />ing quarterback Rob Kass was suspended after<lb />being arrested and charged with driving while<lb />impaired.<lb /><lb />The campus is still buzzing about the quarter-<lb />back position, but now it Ts a positive buzz directed<lb /><lb />towards the Pirates T new starting quarterback:<lb /><lb />Patrick Pinkney.<lb /><lb />Pinkney showed promise against Virginia Tech |<lb /><lb />in the season opener, and had the best passing<lb />performance by an ECU quarterback in Dowdy-<lb />Ficklen Stadium history in ECU Ts emotional win<lb />over North Carolina last Saturday.<lb /><lb />The junior who was buried on the depth chart<lb />prior to Kass T suspension threw for 406 yards and<lb />three touchdowns in his first collegiate start, but<lb /><lb />it Ts Pinkney Ts ability to use his legs that makes him<lb /><lb />different from Kass and sophomore Brett Clay,<lb />who started the Pirates T season-opener against<lb />Virginia Tech.<lb /><lb /> oYou put the ball in his hands back there and let<lb />him run around for awhile, he Ts going to find some-<lb />body, ECU coach Skip Holtz said of Pinkney.<lb /><lb />It Ts that scrambling ability that makes Pinkney<lb />look like ECU Ts successful quarterbacks in the<lb />1990's. Pinkney is currently ECU Ts leading passer,<lb />leading rusher and has yet to turn the ball over.<lb /><lb />He also seems to have the same leadership,<lb />toughness and awareness to go along with the<lb />running ability, that ECU Ts most successful quar-<lb />terbacks have displayed.<lb /><lb /> oHe Ts running, stopping, throwing to a window<lb />and he Ts protecting the ball, said Holtz. oWhen he<lb />scrambles he Ts doing a really good job of keeping<lb />his eyes up and that Ts his strength right now. <lb /><lb />Even though Pinkney has shown a great<lb />amount of potential since being vaulted from third<lb />to first on the depth chart in such a short time, he<lb />remains very humble.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts all about believing in one another,<lb />everybody doing their job and just executing the<lb />offense, said Pinkney. oNo matter the play call,<lb />I Tm just going to execute it and play it one play<lb />at a time. <lb /><lb />ECU Ts victory over UNC was extremely impor-<lb />tant for the ECU program; it was the first victory<lb />over the Tar Heels since 1975 and was a game<lb />that Holtz described as a ogreat atmosphere and a<lb /> ogreat win for the ECU program. David Garrard,<lb />Jeff Blake, James Pinkney and Marcus Crandall all<lb />quarterbacked ECU to wins over arch-rival N.C.<lb />State, which is something we all know ECU fans<lb />value. Blake led ECU to a No. 9 national ranking in<lb />1991 and Garrard, who is very physically similar to<lb />Patrick Pinkney, beat N.C. State in front of 50,000<lb />fans at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in 1999.<lb /><lb />Something that all of those great ECU quarter-<lb />backs didn Tt do: beat UNC. Now that the ground-<lb />breaking UNC victory is under Pinkney Ts belt, Oct.<lb />20 is a date that all ECU fans should circle.<lb /><lb />On Oct. 20 Patrick Pinkney will have the<lb />chance to do something no ECU quarterback has<lb />ever done: beat UNC and N.C. State in the same<lb />year, and he will get to do it in front and 40,000+<lb />screaming Pirate fans.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Need advice? Want answers? Just ask Jane.<lb /><lb />Dear Jane,<lb /><lb />My boyfriend is having a REALLY hard time with<lb />me coming to ECU this year. He isn Tt in school<lb />here, and though he isn Tt usually a jealous guy,<lb />he is always uncomfortable with me hanging out<lb />with other guys, and even just groups of people on<lb />campus when I could be spending time with him.<lb />We are going on two years [together] now, and I<lb />can Tt lose the relationship over something so silly!<lb />When I try and talk about it, we always end up<lb />fighting! Any suggestions?<lb /><lb />Signed,<lb />Luckless in Love<lb /><lb />Dear Luckless,<lb /><lb />First of all, you say that you can Tt lose the relation-<lb />ship over something so silly, but I have to ask, is it<lb />silly? I know that, being in a long-term relation-<lb />ship, you want to spend time together, however, it<lb />is not healthy for him to be so Jealous of your time.<lb />Does he pitch a fit when you have to go to class?<lb />No? Then why let it stop you from seeing your<lb />friends? The other people in your life are so impor-<lb />tant. You shouldn't have to sacrifice one aspect of<lb />your life completely because of your boyfriend.<lb />In a healthy relationship, you would both have<lb />time for your friends. Try instigating friend<lb />nights, where you BOTH plan to do things with<lb />other people, separate from each other. Mine is<lb />Friday, and I love it, because it gives me a chance<lb />to miss my boyfriend. It Ts easy to put strain on<lb />a relationship-when you see one another all the<lb />time...and we're not talking marriage, here. If<lb />something happens to your relationship, where<lb />will you two turn if you aren Tt keeping up with<lb />your friends? Explain that this is a deal-breaker<lb />to him...maybe he Tll see the light. T<lb /><lb />A group fitness manifesto<lb /><lb />JESSICA DUNLOW<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />When I was younger, I used to do oSweatin T<lb />to the Oldies with my mom in the middle of our<lb />living room. I am positive it really did not do much<lb />for me except convince me that Richard Simmons<lb />had a brain lesion. Granted, I did learn all of the<lb />words to the 50 Ts and 60 Ts pop songs they used. .<lb /><lb />After those experiences, I thought group fit-<lb /><lb />ness was full of afro-sporting, short-shorts wear-<lb /><lb />ing, weird little men with an entourage of equally<lb />oddly-dressed females standing evenly spaced<lb />behind them. (Oh yeah, leg warmers and multi-<lb />colored sweatbands too!) ;<lb /><lb />In some aspects, I am sure that these assump-<lb />tions were true of the Simmons followers (and the<lb />old Mousekateer workouts), but the face of group<lb />fitness has changed.<lb /><lb />Yoga was the first official group fitness class<lb />I attended and I felt woefully uncoordinated<lb />amongst all of the veterans. I know that it is this<lb />feeling that prevents many people from ritually<lb />attending fitness classes.<lb /><lb />Therefore, eventually I gave up. I retreated to the<lb />weight room, elliptical machines and treadmills.<lb /><lb />I am extremely impatient. Therefore, when |<lb />go to the Student Recreation Center I do not want<lb />to wait 45 minutes just to get a free machine. |<lb />realize that there is a track, but some of us have<lb /><lb />knee problems.<lb /><lb />Naturally, my idea was to go to the free fit-<lb />ness classes they offered at the Rec. from Aug.<lb />22- Sept. 7 until the entire freshman population<lb />stopped going to the gym. (Freshies, do not take<lb />it personally, it just happens every year.) So, I went<lb />to my first class, Fusion.<lb /><lb />The class is a blend of cardio and weight train-<lb />ing and it is an awesome workout. In addition, as<lb /><lb />entertaining as Richard Simmons was, the instruc-<lb /><lb />tor kept us pumped up and our minds off our pain<lb />by delivering advice about how to avoid getting a<lb />drinking ticket. Then I met Sam.<lb /><lb />To be honest, he scares me, but ina good way.<lb />I have been in a couple of his classes, and now it<lb />is fun to watch the faces of the obvious newbies.<lb />Because he keeps everyone pumped up, and some-<lb />how manages to make us feel like it is almost over<lb />so we just need to finish and we can get back to<lb /><lb />normal life.<lb /><lb />ECU group fitness is an extremely well-oiled<lb />machine. All of the instructors are positive, but do<lb />not baby you. Even though the classes seem intense,<lb />it is easy to become a group fitness junkie.<lb /><lb />Free classes have ended, but I think everyone<lb />needs to give group fitness a chance. (In addition,<lb />not Just because when there are less people, the<lb />instructors can see me being all uncoordinated.) LEWIS i<lb />OPINION WRITER |<lb /><lb />One day last week, on the bus ride from: |<lb />Brewster to Minges, a young. man approached<lb />all the young lady passengers individually in<lb />an attempt to find a lunch date. Unless he found »<lb />success after I had disembarked, he ate alone.<lb /><lb />My initial reaction was that he had a hell of, |<lb />a nerve, but upon reflection I had to admire his _ |<lb />spunk. He took oif at first you don Tt succeed ... , |<lb />to a whole new level. Perhaps if I had been as<lb />bold, I would Tve had my first date before I was; |<lb />27 (Boy, was it awkward when her dad drove, |<lb />us to the movies).<lb /><lb />I Tm old fashioned I guess. I just wouldn T t,<lb />go up to a complete stranger and ask her to. |<lb />lunch. She Td probably slap me and I know my<lb />wife would. |<lb /><lb />I guess young people are more liberal ane<lb />I was at their age. Take clothing, for example, ,<lb /><lb />I looked like a white bread dork with my plaid"<lb />shirts and freshly-pressed khakis, but the other<lb />day I saw a guy in a ragged T-shirt, shabby,<lb />shorts and flip-flops sitting on the floor out- -<lb />side a classroom. I took pity on him and stuck ,<lb />a dollar in the cup beside him before realizing. |<lb />it was full of coffee. When I found out he was.<lb />a professor, I really felt like a putz.<lb /><lb />A word on flip-flops and sandals in general,<lb />Few things look as ridiculous on a grown man<lb />as sandals. No male over the age of 10 should;<lb />ever wear them. Why? Men have ugly feet. I<lb />know. I Tm a man, I have ugly feet and I don Tt.<lb />wear sandals. No one wants to look down and. |<lb />cast their eyes on a set of hideous toes that look, |<lb />like hairy Mexican sausages.<lb /><lb />. Young ladies,-on the other hand, can pull, |<lb />off the whole sandal thing, provided they have,<lb />cute toes. Ugly toes of both sexes should remain<lb />covered at all times.<lb /><lb />Speaking of young ladies, take it from the<lb />Old Guy, girls: a little mystery is a lot more<lb />exciting than miles of skin. Those nice little<lb />nothings you're almost wearing can make it<lb />hard for some of us to concentrate on what the.<lb />professor is saying. I mean, yeah, I Tm happily.<lb />married, but I Tm not dead ... and I really need<lb />my education. If you've got it, flaunt it at the, |<lb />beach. I don Tt go there.<lb /><lb />And for anyone out there who doesn Tt have<lb /><lb />... please don Tt flaunt it. Nuff said.<lb /><lb /> oSpeaking of flaunting ... to the young man<lb />with his pants pulled down past his cheeks_<lb />giving everyone in the Financial Aid office a<lb />clear view of his plaid undies last Wednesday: ,<lb />you're in college. You should be able to dress,<lb />yourself by now.<lb /><lb />Now for a word about facial hair. What Ts<lb />up with all these mutton chop sideburns I Tm;<lb />seeing all over campus? Elvis left the building. a<lb />a long time ago, fellows. And if you're going to. |<lb />have a beard, have the wherewithal to grow a_|<lb />mustache to go along with it. Abraham Lincoln.<lb />and C. Everett Koop are the only non-Amish<lb />who could ever pull that off, and let Ts face it,.<lb />they looked ridiculous too.<lb /><lb />While I Tm at it, let Ts talk about the bath-<lb />room for a minute. Obviously I Tm speaking<lb />only to the gentlemen now, but some of it may,<lb />apply to the ladies.<lb /><lb />Flush. That Ts all I ask. Ever hear of backs-<lb />plash, guys? Think about it. Yeah, that Ts right.<lb />You don Tt want it to happen to you, and I sure<lb />don Tt want it to happen to me. You flush at<lb />home, so do your fellow students the courtesy}<lb />of flushing at school. Soap and hot water are<lb />right behind you.<lb /><lb />I don Tt mean to be critical. My intent more? |<lb />than anything is to make you laugh, however, I<lb />also want to make you think. <lb />PAGE A6<lb /><lb />Halloween comes early this year<lb /><lb />Another remake in a<lb />long, lackluster series<lb /><lb />ERIN EDWARDS<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />When news first broke that<lb />heavy metal musician/horror<lb />film director Rob Zombie was<lb />set to remake the 1978 movie<lb /> oHalloween, I was quick to<lb />write it off. How could anyone,<lb />especially Rob Zombie, do jus-<lb />tice to John Carpenter Ts clas-<lb />sic tale of a babysitter stalked<lb />by the killer? I first saw the<lb />original when I was 15 and<lb />have never stopped watching<lb />it since. Although there have<lb />been about seven sequels, the<lb />original was the only one that<lb />mattered to me.<lb /><lb />I have never been a fan.<lb /><lb />of Rob Zombie ever since he<lb />directed House of 1,000 Corpses<lb />and The Devil Ts Rejects, two of<lb />my least favorite movies. But I<lb />was intrigued to find out that<lb />the new version of oHalloween <lb />wasn't exactly a remake, rather<lb />a oreimaging, incorporating<lb /><lb />. Sequences of a prequel along<lb />with the original story.<lb /><lb />The film opens, minus the<lb />famous haunting theme, with a<lb />background story of the Myers<lb />family. Mom is an exotic dancer,<lb />her boyfriend is lazy and ver-<lb />bally abusive, Judith is a pro-<lb />miscuous female teenager and<lb />Michael, appearing seemingly<lb /><lb /> T childish behind a clown mask,<lb />hides dark secrets.<lb /><lb />Gone is the seemingly<lb /> omiddle class Myers family in<lb />the original, and in place, an<lb />updated dysfunctional family.<lb />Michael appears to hate every-<lb /><lb />_one, except his baby sister,<lb />Laurie, whom he refers to as<lb /> oboo. Information absent<lb />from the original film, includ-<lb />ing a higher body count pro-<lb />duced by Michael as a child, is<lb />presented in the new version.<lb /><lb />The movie flashes forward<lb />only 15 years later, what would<lb />be around 1993. However, it is<lb />evident that the age of Michael<lb />has changed. In the original, he<lb />was six years old. He appears<lb />to be around 10 or 11 in the<lb />new version, possibly making<lb /><lb />Free Pregnancy Tests<lb />Carolina Pregnancy Center<lb />Greenville (252) 757-0003<lb />www.carolinapregnancycenter.org<lb />Washington location: (252) 946-8040<lb />24 Hour Hotline: 1-800-395-HELP<lb /><lb />way to a more advanced level<lb />of psychotic problems. In<lb />general, this is what the entire<lb />movie consists of, however, not<lb /><lb /> oadding anything to the entire<lb /><lb />story that has been added to and<lb />reworked for almost 30 years.<lb />The lacking concept Zombie<lb />attempts to work into the plot<lb />is only covered up with overt<lb />sexual tendencies, nudity and a<lb />feeling of disappointment for the<lb />viewer. Make the crowd a non-factor<lb /><lb />ECU's players, students and fan base are<lb />coming off an emotional victory over UNC<lb />and have a lot of positives going into this<lb />game. Southern Miss needs to make some<lb />big plays early and take the crowd out of the<lb />game. USM played in front of 106,311 people<lb />at Tennessee's Neyland Stadium last week<lb /><lb />and was winning for the majority of the first<lb />half, but couldn Tt hold the lead. The Golden<lb /><lb />Eagles need to keep the momentum the<lb />whole game and riot let the Pirate fans affect<lb />the game, which is something they are very<lb />good at judging by their 14-2 record at Dowdy<lb />Ficklen Stadium.<lb /><lb />2. Win the turnover battle ©<lb /><lb />The Golden Eagles T defense returns nine<lb /><lb />starters, seven of which are seniors, and<lb />plays a very aggressive, attacking and con-<lb />fusing style of defense. ECU quarterback<lb />Patrick Pinkney and his young offensive line<lb />will see many defensive schemes, blitzes and<lb />stunts that they have never seen before. USM<lb /><lb />-needs to cause turnovers, and turn them into<lb /><lb />points.<lb /><lb />3. Run a balanced offense<lb /><lb />USM. has arguably the best running back<lb /><lb />in C-USA, the best tight end in C-USA, the<lb />most explosive wide receiver in C-USA, and<lb />a senior quarterback to manage all of the<lb />weapons. The ECU defense has yet to face a<lb />truly balanced offense, so the Golden Eagles<lb />need to mix up the play calling with effective<lb /><lb />run and pass plays, keeping the ECU defense ©<lb /><lb />playing passive and on the back of its heels.<lb /><lb />SOUTHERN MISS SID <lb /><lb />BOWER<lb /><lb /> oThere is no doubt that they are<lb />a good football team and every<lb />conference game is important<lb />especially with this being the<lb />first one. They are all equal in<lb />importance, butthisisabiggame. <lb /><lb />ECU opens conference play with division champion<lb /><lb />JARED JACKSON<lb />STAFF WRITER : :<lb /><lb />After an emotional and historic win over North Carolina last<lb />Saturday, ECU (1-1) is set to face conference-rival Southern Miss (1-1)<lb />at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in what should be one heck of a showdown<lb />to open C-USA play for both teams.<lb /><lb />A win on Saturday would give the Pirates four straight at home, and<lb />the inside track at securing the East Division title and earning a berth<lb /><lb />in the C-USA championship game. A win over the Golden Eagles could<lb /><lb />be a monumental task as Southern Miss is 14-2 all time in Greenville,<lb />with the Pirates T last Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium win coming in 1994.<lb /><lb />The Golden Eagles and Pirates finished first and second in the<lb />East Division last season and in the preseason were picked to finish<lb />in the same order.<lb /><lb /> oThings don Tt get any easier this week for us, said ECU football<lb />Head Coach Skip Holtz. oWe have played two quality programs to<lb />start the season in very emotional games. The celebration on Saturday.<lb />ended at 10 a.m. Sunday when we put on the Southern Miss film. <lb /><lb />' oThey are a talented football team with a ton of athleticism and<lb />speed. I would compare their talent very favorably with the two teams<lb />we just played. <lb /><lb />While Southern Miss owns a 24-8 advantage in the series, ECU<lb />was able to pull out a thrilling 20-17 oyertime victory at oThe Rock <lb />in Hattiesburg last season. Ben Hartman converted a 24-yard field<lb />goal on the Pirates T first drive in overtime, then cornerback Travis<lb />Williams picked off Southern Miss quarterback Jeremy Young's first<lb />down pass on the Golden Eagles first overtime possession to seal the<lb />deal for ECU.<lb /><lb /> oIt was a great feeling, T Williams said reflecting on his key<lb />interception against the Golden Eagles a year ago. oWe already knew<lb />coming into the game that we were going to be a big underdog so we<lb />just wanted to prove everybody wrong. We kept the game close the<lb />whole game and coach came to us before Southern Miss got the ball<lb />in overtime and said, defense we are going to make a play. <lb /><lb /> oI said to myself do my key reads and sure enough I just sat over<lb />there and they threw it up and I made a play on the ball. <lb /><lb />The Pirates only lost by 10 to Virginia Tech in their season opener,<lb /><lb />but some key secondary issues arose on defense. Those same problems, _<lb /><lb />most likely due to youth and inexperience, also arose during last week Ts<lb />win against UNC as TJ. Yates and the Tar Heels torched the Pirates<lb />secondary for 344 yards passing and three touchdowns.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts a thing with corners and safeties; it Ts just going to happen <lb />said Williams. oYou react to it and the great corners and the great<lb />safeties when they get beat they come back and just don Tt let it happen<lb />again. The confidence level has to stay up; you can Tt let your confidence<lb />level get down because if it Ts Champ Bailey, Sean Taylor or Ed Reed<lb />everybody gets beat so that Ts just a phase of the game. T<lb /><lb /> oEast Carolina is a good football team, Southern Miss coach<lb />Jeff Bower said. oThey played Virginia Tech really hard and played<lb />extremely well on defense. They are not giving up much at all rushing...<lb />they have a really good front seven. The linebackers are all good and<lb />all returnees from last year.<lb /><lb /> oOffensively, they are moving the football and are probably 50-50<lb />run to pass. The quarterback (Pinkney) is a good player as they run<lb />some misdirection and some read stuff but they do a good Job of moving<lb />the ball. | am impressed with this football team. They are off to a good<lb />start. It Ts a big ball game for both football teams. <lb /><lb />Quarterback play will undoubtedly play a more aieciiscane role<lb />in who. comes away with a victory on Saturday than perhaps in any<lb />other game this season for both teams. With two games under each<lb />of their belts, Southern Miss senior quarterback Jeremy Young and<lb />junior Pirate signal caller Patrick Pinkney have played well coming<lb />into this weekend's contest.<lb /><lb />Against Tennessee-Martin and Tennessee, Young has completed -<lb /><lb />almost 50 percent of his passes, going 30-of-62 for 369 yards and two<lb />touchdowns while also rushing for another score.<lb /><lb />Pinkney has played lights out for the Pirates, completing 45-<lb />of-66 passes for 521 yards [including 406 against UNC] ve three<lb />touchdowns.<lb /><lb />The Southern Miss offensive attack is salidified by senior wide<lb />receiver Chris Johnson, who has racked up 183 yards to go along<lb />with two touchdowns, and leads a young but deep receiving core.<lb />The centerpiece to the Southern Miss offense is sophomore Damion<lb /><lb />_ Fletcher, who Holtz calls a oslasher when describing his running style.<lb /><lb />Fletcher was a Freshman All-American last year and has rushed for<lb /><lb />193 yards and a touchdown in the Golden Eagles first two games this<lb /><lb />season in limited action due to cramps.<lb /><lb />The strong point of Southern Miss is defense, and no one in C-USA<lb />can compare to the success of the Golden Eagles year in and year out.<lb />For 2007, the oNasty Bunch , as they like to call their defense, returns<lb />nine starters. All of the starting defensive line and linebackers return<lb />for the Golden Eagles, while they had to replace both cornerback<lb />positions. The Southern Miss defense ranked in the top 30 nationally<lb />in four categories, most notably total defense and pass defense last<lb />season.<lb /><lb />While Saturday Ts game could set the tone for the rest of the season,<lb />Holtz believes the past is just that and come Beredey the Pirates will<lb />just have to worry about that moment forward.<lb /><lb /> oI told the team last week that the 2007 version of the North<lb /><lb />. Carolina Tar Heels hasn't played the 2007 version of East Carolina, <lb /><lb />Holtz said. oWhat has happened in the past is irrelevant. No matter<lb />what the series advantage is, it only matters what happens on that<lb />field Saturday. <lb /><lb />_ This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />KEYS T0<lb />THE GAME:<lb /><lb />1. Better Play from the Secondary<lb /><lb />The same problem that plagued the Pirates<lb />against Virginia Tech in the secondary resur-<lb />faced against UNC as ECU allowed the Tar Heels<lb />to throw for 344 yards and touchdown passes of<lb />37, 39 and 51 yards. If the Pirates are to be suc-<lb />cessful against Southern Miss than the holes in<lb />the secondary must be fixed or the Golden Eagles<lb />will find many ogolden opportunities in throwing<lb />the ball deep.<lb /><lb />2. Don Tt have an Emotional letdown<lb /><lb /> {t could be easy for the Pirates to come onto the<lb /><lb />field Saturday and get scorched after such an<lb />emotional victory against UNC. While coach Holtz<lb />believes a letdown is more prone to happen dur-<lb />ing a road game, ECU could come out flat and<lb />never recover. oIt is great having the support of<lb />your fans and students, said Holtz. oIt motivates<lb />the team seeing the student section full a whole<lb />two hours before the game. The players make a<lb />beeline to the students after we win because they<lb />know how much the support helps them. The stu-<lb />dents are the heartbeat of the stadium and they<lb />set the tone for motivation and enthusiasm. <lb /><lb />3. The Running Game<lb /><lb />ECU cannot rely on the pass as much as it did<lb />last week if it stands a chance against Southern<lb />Miss. Last season, the Golden Eagles ranked in<lb />the top 30 nationally in pass defense and return<lb />9 starters this season from that team. Against<lb />UNC, Patrick Pinkney was the Pirates leading<lb /><lb />rusher with only 22 yards on the ground. If the<lb /><lb />Pirates are to. have any success throwing the ball<lb />then the ground game will have to set that up.<lb /><lb />SID.<lb /><lb />HOLTZ<lb /><lb /> oSouthern Miss is the [New York]<lb />Yankees of our conference. They've<lb />dominated and held that top spot<lb />for awhile. Coach Bower has done<lb />an incredible job of building that<lb />program...they have that title<lb />right now that we Tve been looking<lb />for and the title that we want. <lb /><lb /></p>

In its first <lb /><lb />two seasons, Cox led the<lb />Pirates to an overall record<lb />of 30-14-0-1.<lb /><lb />The Pirates lose a total<lb />of six players from last year Ts<lb />squad but 11 new players have<lb />been recruited to fill the gaps<lb />and create added depth.<lb /><lb />Sammy Duehring and Don-<lb />ovan Dean are two new players<lb />who look likely to see plenty<lb />of time on the ice in defensive<lb />roles. Sean Burns, a transfer for-<lb />ward from N.C. State, is another<lb />potential impact player to keep<lb />an eye on.<lb /><lb />Junior Tyler Falcon returns<lb />as the team Ts second leading<lb />goal scorer from last season and<lb />leads an offense that will come<lb />at opponents in waves.<lb /><lb />All four of the Pirates lines<lb />should be legitimate scoring<lb />threats this season. °<lb /><lb />Senior Brent Falcon will<lb />return at net and anchor the<lb />ECU defense "if he can stay<lb />healthy. The Scotia, NY native<lb />went down with an ankle injury<lb />in mid-season last year.<lb /><lb /> oBrent Ts crucial to the team<lb />in a lot of different ways, both<lb />with his goaltending skills and<lb />with the work he puts into the<lb />hockey club, said Cox of his<lb />team Ts leader.<lb /><lb /> oThis team wotldn T t be<lb />together if it wasn Tt for Brent.<lb />He Ts organized the schedules;<lb />he Ts promoted the team, both<lb />in the community and around<lb />campus. He Ts the cornerstone<lb />of this team. <lb /><lb />With a good mix of veterans<lb />and new talent on the roster, the<lb />2007-08 season could prove to<lb />be a major turning point for<lb />ECU Hockey.<lb /><lb />Cox believes this could be<lb />the most talented team in the<lb />program Ts brief history.<lb /><lb /> oI think we bring a better °<lb /><lb />STAFF PHOTO<lb /><lb />Connor Brearley and Steven Allbright talk it over on defense.<lb /><lb />Goalie Brearley fends off Loyola in the Southern Regionals.<lb /><lb />team to the table this year than<lb />we did last year, said Cox.<lb /> oWe've got more depth, more<lb />speed and more strength<lb />overall. This team just gets<lb />better year after year. <lb /><lb />ECU will hit the road to<lb />begin the season, heading to T<lb />the first annual Charlotte<lb />Shootout (Oct. 5 " 7) to face<lb />George Washington, Appa-<lb />lachian State and Georgia<lb /><lb />Tech.<lb />The team Ts home opener<lb />will be Oct. 12 versus in-<lb /><lb />state foe UNC Wilmington.
