<lb />WWOnN -<lb /><lb />Op<lb /><lb />{ That's what he said... }<lb /><lb />Our last years<lb /><lb />Why you'll die or how you Tll survive<lb /><lb />ALEX LAROCCA<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Since the beginnings of civilization the end has<lb />been near. Today, tomorrow, or 20 years from now,<lb />someone is bound to get it right eventually. The<lb />biggest problems with predicting the end, I think,<lb />involve where we look.<lb /><lb />Many people have been looking in the Christian<lb />Bible for clues for centuries. But before Jesus was<lb />even born, another race and creed had not only cor-<lb />rectly predicted doomsday, but also put scientific<lb />backing to it.<lb /><lb />December 21, 2012, will signify the completion<lb />of the thirteenth B Tak Ttun cycle in the Long Count<lb />of the Maya calendar. According to the Mayans,<lb />this shall usher in a great change, which they rec-<lb />ognize, basically, as the end of the world.<lb /><lb />Laugh all you want, but on this day of Solstice,<lb />some modern-day scientists also believe that the<lb />entire polarity of the Earth will shift. Volcanoes<lb />erupting, hurricanes forming in seconds, moun-<lb />tains crumble and fall in mere seconds...Everything<lb />that really sucks will happen in one day.<lb /><lb />Well even if all of this does happen, odds are<lb />that not everyone will die. And into this scenario<lb />I place myself. I am not going to die on December<lb />21, 2012. Not only because I recognize that I am<lb />not going to die, but also because I have a plan.<lb />Now, we all have our zombie invasion plans and/or<lb />World War III plans, but in the hell that will be<lb />2012 you need to start from scratch.<lb /><lb />The big things to consider here are how not to<lb />die, and if so, how not to die miserably. Anything<lb />past the Mississippi is going to be absolutely<lb />annihilated when the super-volcano in Yellowstone<lb />blows. The Southeast will more than likely flood<lb />completely when hurricanes begin forming every<lb />hour. Going north is no better. |<lb /><lb />Not only will the North Pole melt, but also<lb />Canada, and the ensuing flood will have no mercy,<lb />especially when it meets the southern floods. I<lb />couldn Tt possibly imagine going to Mexico for<lb />anything more than a vacation, so there is no<lb />possibility of escape there, either. South America<lb />would be a great place for salvation if an asteroid<lb />wasn Tt hitting it in 2036, so I won't bother getting<lb />comfortable.<lb /><lb />The safest place will be the Middle-East. It is<lb />an obvious choice: It is our original Eden, there<lb />are TONS of guns to battle the roaming streets<lb />gangs of the future, and due to the massive climate<lb />change it probably won't be that hot.<lb /><lb />Unfortunately, it is thousands of miles away and<lb />flying is the best way to go. I am not sure when I<lb />am leaving, but for anyone following my plans fly<lb />BEFORE Dec. 21, not on.<lb /><lb />If you have a fear of flying, then steal a boat,<lb />and if you have a fear of both then keep a tab of<lb />cyanide in your teeth.<lb /><lb />So now I have made it and, as stated, I am alive.<lb />Mission accomplished, but I and all the other survi-<lb />vors must rebuild civilization. Some may think that<lb />in the scary, ravaged and poor aftermath of Dec.<lb />22 living in the Middle-East sounds like a death<lb />sentence. These people are not thinking.<lb /><lb />This area already has lived in mass poverty,<lb />been exploited and subjugated for centuries.<lb /><lb />Needless to say, they have been expecting the T<lb /><lb />Apocalypse. :<lb /><lb />Not to mention that Islam (obviously being<lb />the dominant religion of the future) has perfect<lb />rules with perfect penalties for such a dangerous<lb />future.<lb /><lb />The gangs of the future, either attempting to<lb />spread their doctrine, steal gas or pillage, will have<lb />a hell of a time contending with post-apocalyptic<lb />Islamic Law.<lb /><lb />In fact, after the initial defense against these<lb />roving gangs, Muslims will more than likely go<lb />on the offensive, reclaiming most of the old Islamic<lb />Kingdom.<lb /><lb />By this time, though, I think things will have<lb />really gotten out of hand and I will attempt to<lb />leave. If I can make it out, and survive the miles of<lb />barren land, then | will attempt to head somewhere<lb />in Europe.<lb /><lb />The future jungles of Europe will more than<lb />likely be infested with zombies and you are making<lb />a life choice to live among them. But there is little<lb />leeway in the future and your choices are two:<lb />zombies or Neo-Islam.<lb /><lb />If you do manage to survive and go through<lb /><lb />with my.plan, or your own, then I suggest a balance T<lb /><lb />of these two. In what order I am not sure, though. I<lb /><lb />think starting with Neo-Islam will make it easier to .<lb /><lb />live with zombies, but perhaps you will need divine<lb />light after dealings with the zombie population.<lb />Either orderisn'tsobad, though, asall thenegatives<lb />of the past, racism and money, will be demolished and<lb />life will not only be happier but violently simplistic.<lb /><lb />Sources for this column include greatdreams.<lb />com/2012 and Wikipedia.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb /> oWs our son, doctor ... As mentioned previously<lb />ina TEC article, East Carolina employs numerous<lb />means of keeping its students out of harm Ts way,<lb />like our accredited police force and every system<lb />that falls under the umbrella of Campus Safety.<lb />With nearly five thousand freshmen and the larg-<lb />est student body in ECU Ts history, though, these<lb />systems are sure to be spread thin at times.<lb /><lb />With the release of the latest reports detailing<lb />the standards of university safety on campuses<lb />such as Virginia Tech, one account caught my<lb />eye. My surprise did not have to do with the end-<lb />less game of point-the-finger that shamelessly<lb />follows tragedy. It does however, stem from the<lb />ideas that some lawmakers and even students were<lb />bringing to the table to prevent future shootings<lb />at any college.<lb /><lb />The pitch: Allow students and teachers to<lb />carry concealed weapons with a license on campus.<lb />Surprisingly enough, this is not that hard of a feat.<lb />Virginia law states that every university campus<lb />is entitled to their opinion in terms of concealed<lb />weapon policies. Currently, Virginia Tech is not<lb />the only school weighing their options in this field<lb /> " students from Virginia Ts George Mason are also<lb />voicing interest in the idea.<lb /><lb />For the sake of attention spans of those crying<lb />this proposal will breed more violence; I will limit<lb />gun laws to two scenarios: Japan and Israel. The<lb />former bans nearly its entire citizen population<lb />from owning a firearm. The only weapons one<lb />may purchase in Japan range from air rifles to<lb /><lb />shotguns and may only be used in sporting and<lb />hunting events. Japan is so strict that it requires<lb />all owners of registered weapons to check them<lb />in for inspection once a year. With this in mind,<lb />Japan experiences roughly two hundred gun<lb />related attacks a year in comparison to the United<lb />States, whom over 50,000 reports annually.<lb /><lb />Israel, on the flipside, is a country that openly<lb />gives firearm licenses freely away to its of age<lb />citizens. Here Ts the catch: citizens of Israel are<lb />required to serve in the Israeli Defense Force for<lb />three years, and, upon leaving, become reservists.<lb />Does this deterrent work for the country when<lb /><lb />. nearly all of its people may be carrying a loaded<lb />firearm? Facts seem to say so, as Israel ranks<lb />lowest on nearly all available statistics concerning<lb />firearm related attacks and murders.<lb /><lb />What does this have to do with colleges? The<lb />point is, anyone who wants to commit violent acts<lb />will, regardless of whether concealed weapons are<lb />legal or not. Most gun related deaths and attacks<lb />are from the barrels of unregistered and stolen<lb />firearms to begin with. Furthermore, guns are not<lb />needed to commit a violent act. Africa alone can<lb />attest to this, with nearly one million deaths from<lb />the sharp end of a machete. Will students persuade<lb />legislators and schools in Virginia to test this<lb />extreme method of self-defense? Most likely not,<lb />but the improbability may not stop students from<lb />going out of their way to protect their lives...<lb /><lb />It should be noted that of nearly one hundred<lb />students polled at East Carolina University, the<lb />majority of those asked strongly oppose the idea<lb />of allowing licensed firearms on campus in the<lb />hands of students.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Republicans<lb />versus the<lb />environment<lb /><lb />What happened to the conservative<lb />conservationist?<lb /><lb />JUSTIN SUMMERS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />You would think, by definition, that conser-<lb />vatives would inherently align themselves with<lb />conservation. While most conservatives will agree<lb />on conserving the right to marriage between a man<lb />and a woman, preserving a small government and<lb />Christian morals, one conservative principle that<lb />seems to have been forgotten over the past 20 years<lb />is the conservation of the environment. Nowadays<lb />it seems that republican pundits and politicians love<lb />nothing more than to take a cheap shot at environ-<lb />mentalists and green policies in order to appease<lb />their base. Whether it is denying the importance of<lb />global warming, the role humans have on our earth<lb />or simple apathy towards environmental issues,<lb />the new wave of republicans are truly setting a<lb />new low standard for the environment. My ques-<lb />tion is, what happened to the Republican Party?<lb /><lb />Once upon a time there were republicans in<lb />office who cared about the environment. Teddy<lb />Roosevelt, a leader of the Republican Party and<lb />progressive movements, established the system of<lb />National Parks and wildlife refuges in the United<lb />States. While he did enjoy hunting big game in<lb />Africa and killed his share of white Rhinos, at least<lb />he expressed some concern for the environment.<lb />Another good example is Barry Goldwater, the<lb /> ofather of conservatism. ? Quite possibly the most<lb />famous republican conservationist is Richard Nixon.<lb /><lb /> T Nixon not only signed federal laws such as the<lb />Clean Air Act, the Endangered Species Act and the<lb />National Environmental Policy Act, he also estab-<lb />lished the Environmental Protection Agency (2).<lb />So it is obvious that republicans were once keen<lb />to environmental issues, but now it seems they<lb />are backpedaling. Since Nixon, conservatives in<lb />the Whitehouse and on the Hill rarely make an<lb />effort to be ogreen, ? and are now even chiseling<lb />away at the legislation their republican breth-<lb />ren put into place in the past. For instance, the<lb />Bush: Whitehouse has proposed opening several<lb />thousand acres of national parks for industrial<lb />purposes and even allowing snowmobiles in Yel-<lb />lowstone and Grand Teton National Parks (1).<lb /><lb />Also they have succeeded at dismantling the<lb />EPA library (1) and other environmental organi-<lb />zations that provide oversight and regulation on<lb />industry abuses. They have purposefully allowed<lb />the denial of scientific evidence towards global<lb /><lb /> warming and ignored the scientific bodies most<lb /><lb />informed of such topics. The list goes on and on.<lb /><lb />Even outside of Washington it seems as though<lb />people from the dark side are scared to talk about<lb />the environment. From high school and college<lb />campuses around the country, I feel like the over-<lb />all sentiment amongst republicans is disinterest<lb />and denial of environmental problems. Whenever<lb />discussion arises, it seems people immediately<lb />start on Al Gore and his movie. Please note, Al<lb />Gore is not the sole face of environmentalism in<lb />America and we could care less about how big<lb />his house is and its affect on the environment.<lb />The fact of the matter is, everyone has to do their<lb />part to clean up, and if we are not willing to do<lb />so in fear of looking like a otree-hugging hippie, ?<lb />then we do not deserve all that the earth provides<lb />for us. We have politicized environmentalism<lb />to a point where it does no one any good, and<lb />in order to make progress we must look beyond<lb />all the trivialities and do something positive.<lb /><lb />Luckily one group is dedicated to doing just that<lb />and it may surprise you when you hear the name.<lb />REP, or Republicans for Environmental Protec-<lb />tion, is a national organization dedicated to envi-<lb />ronmentalism in the GOP and supports candidates<lb />who share their beliefs. So there is after all a small<lb />but growing beacon of hope for the environmental-<lb />ist hidden away in the majority of conservatives;<lb />the question is, are you big enough to expose it?<lb /><lb />(1) http://cooperativeresearch.org/project.<lb />jSp?project=bush_enviro_record<lb />(2) (www. repamerica.org/<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com. For<lb />many, the use of automobiles only<lb />increases this behavior, making<lb />some act out in angry ways when<lb />behind the wheel. However, the<lb />simple misunderstandings that<lb />occur on our nation Ts highways,<lb />including being cut off by another,<lb />followed too closely or any other<lb />traffic violations, can cause road<lb />rage, a term many drivers may<lb />already be familiar with.<lb /><lb />Road rage is the violent behav-<lb />ior by a driver in an automobile.<lb />While it is a form of aggressive<lb />driving, the degree of extrem-<lb />ity between the two is widely<lb />disputed.<lb /><lb />But road rage is not Just flip-<lb />ping someone the middle finger<lb />or murmuring incoherent insults<lb />under your breath. It entails<lb /><lb />serious consequences for anyone<lb />who operates a car. Road rageS<lb /><lb />leads to endangerment of others<lb />and, according to the American<lb />Automobile Association (AAA),<lb />results in the death of at least 1500<lb />men, women and children each<lb />year in the United States. This<lb />issue is a serious problem among<lb />Americans, especially in heavily<lb />populated metropolitan areas.<lb /><lb /> oT think that the typical driver<lb />doesn Tt pay attention, causing me<lb />to get angry. Many of these<lb /><lb />students have been forewarned |<lb /><lb />profusely by alumni relatives<lb />about eternal financial aid lines,<lb />bookstores that make money<lb /><lb />disappear, and mass-produced<lb />dining hall food. These students<lb />have been guided through nearly<lb />every portion of the application<lb />and settlement phases of the first<lb />year of college and stand a good<lb />chance of acclimating well to<lb />their new environment.<lb /><lb />But what about the students<lb />who are the first in their family<lb />to go to college?<lb /><lb />After all, college is not only a<lb /><lb />brand-new experience for them,<lb /><lb />but for their family also. These<lb />students, commonly called<lb /><lb /> ofirst-genera-<lb />tion students, ?<lb />face several<lb />difficult chal-<lb />lenges that<lb />many students<lb />who come<lb />from a long<lb />line of college<lb />graduates will<lb />not have to<lb />contend with.<lb />Some first-<lb />generation<lb />students, like<lb />ECU sopho-<lb />more and Psy-<lb />chology major<lb />Dorian Luvi-<lb /><lb />complete the<lb />entire process<lb />of obtaining<lb />college admission and financial<lb />aid on their own.<lb /><lb /> oMy family didn Tt agree with<lb />my decision to come to college<lb />because they felt that since they<lb />didn Tt go to college and still led<lb />stable lives I didn Tt need too<lb />either, ? said Luviano. oI had to<lb />explain to them that things are<lb />different today. ?<lb /><lb />It is precisely that difference.<lb />that has led many parents to push<lb />their children to become the first<lb />in the family to attend college.<lb />Andy Watkins, senior English<lb /><lb />ano, had to.<lb /><lb />and Anthropology major, said<lb />that his parents were very happy<lb />that he was attending college<lb />because it gave him the chance<lb />to better himself; a chance they<lb />might not necessarily have had<lb />growing up. As difficult and as<lb />stressful as the process of admis-<lb />sion may be for a first-generation<lb />student, it pales in comparison to<lb />the seemingly gargantuan task<lb />of actually succeeding in college.<lb />The pressure to succeed from<lb />family members is a constant<lb />stressor and can sometimes get<lb />overwhelming.<lb /><lb />According to Luviano, family<lb />members have such high expecta-<lb />tions ofa first-generation student<lb />because oit is the first real test to<lb />see if someone in the family can<lb />succeed ? in the new, experienced<lb />based world economy.<lb /><lb />The current economy has put<lb />tremendous emphasis on attend-<lb />ing and succeeding at college in<lb />order to get the treasured jobs<lb />that are constantly glorified<lb />in the career handbooks. The<lb />pressure of being a first-genera-<lb />tion student also has an unlikely<lb />benefit that will certainly help<lb />the student in succeeding and<lb />getting those coveted five-day-a-<lb />week jobs. Donnenwirth<lb />challenged his team to improve<lb />in all phases of the game.<lb /><lb /> oWe need to be better with the<lb />ball when under pressure and show<lb />a little more composure with the<lb />ball so we make better decisions, ?<lb />said Donnenwirth in response to<lb />his team Ts weaknesses.<lb /><lb />receiver; it was running back<lb />Chris Johnson.<lb /><lb />Johnson had 258 all-purpose<lb />yards and three touchdowns<lb />against UNC, with 136 of those<lb />yards and two of the touch-<lb />downs coming on passes from<lb />Pinkney.<lb /><lb />Johnson now has six career<lb />touchdown receptions, which<lb />ties an ECU record for run-<lb />ning backs, and his 78-yard<lb />touchdown reception in the first<lb />quarter was the longest ECU<lb />touchdown since he caught an<lb />81-yard pass from James Pinkney<lb />against Rice in 2005.<lb /><lb />Holtz is now 3-1 against<lb />ACC opponents as coach of the<lb />Pirates T, something that he said<lb />is a testament to the ECU players<lb />just as much as him.<lb /><lb /> oWe're growing, we're<lb />moving in the right direction, ?<lb />said Holtz. oWe still have a long<lb />way to go but I couldn Tt be more<lb />pleased with the attitude, the<lb />way these players are working<lb />and the commitment level that<lb />they have.<lb /><lb /> oWe want to play big-time<lb />football in Greenville and I told<lb />them after the Virginia Tech<lb />game, that was a big time envi-<lb />ronment and they belonged in it,<lb />we want to play big-time football<lb />and we got in that arena and<lb />that environment tonight and<lb />we played it; I couldn Tt be more<lb />proud of these players, I haven't<lb />made a pass or thrown a block or<lb />made a tackle, these guys deserve<lb />the credit for the way that they<lb />go out there and let it all out on<lb />the field. ?<lb /><lb />UNC had beat ECU eight<lb />of the last 10 meetings in the<lb />series, and Saturday Ts win for the<lb />Pirates could have signaled a sign<lb />of the future.<lb /><lb /> oIt feels great, it Ts an in-<lb />state rivalry and they were<lb />talking very downward towards<lb />us, ? said Khalif Mitchell, who<lb />transferred to ECU from UNC<lb />in 2006. oThis is a good win<lb />for this whole area; this whole<lb />Greenville and Eastern North<lb />Carolina area. ?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinain.com<lb /><lb />fashion<lb /><lb />ECU heard.its head coach Ts<lb />rally cry and responded in a big<lb />way in the second game of the<lb />weekend.<lb /><lb />The Pirates started out slug-<lb />gish, partly due to the rough<lb />weather conditions, but eventu-<lb />ally stepped up their game.<lb /><lb />The first half of the game was<lb />delayed by rain from Tropical<lb />Storm Gabrielle and an unfor-<lb />tunate injury to midfielder Sarah<lb />Kirkley.<lb /><lb />Then with 10:39 left to play<lb />in the first half, Madison Keller<lb />awoke ECU Ts slumbering offense<lb />with the first of her two goals on<lb />a header off 'a corner kick from<lb />Tricia Tufts:<lb /><lb />At the half ECU led Furman,<lb />1-0, and had out shot its oppo-<lb />nent, 7-1.<lb /><lb />ECU pressured very well<lb />defensively, which opened things<lb />up for the Pirates in the second<lb />half.<lb /><lb />Szilard had a great shot at<lb />the start of the second half, just<lb />missing the goal.<lb /><lb />With about 27 minutes left to<lb />play, Kat Norris saved the poten-<lb />tial game-tying goal for Furman<lb />and in turn kept the momentum<lb />on the Pirate Ts side.<lb /><lb />Keller scored her second goal<lb />of the contest with 16 minutes<lb />remaining off a penalty kick to<lb />give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.<lb /><lb />The Pirate Ts third goal of<lb />the afternoon:came from Blair<lb />Hefner on a pass from freshman<lb />Amanda Broz with just under five<lb />minutes left in regulation.<lb /><lb />The goal was Hefner Ts third<lb />of the season.<lb /><lb />ECU goalkeeper Campbell Ts<lb />strong play on Friday carried<lb />over, as she recorded her second<lb />straight shutout and 13th of her<lb />career.<lb /><lb />The Pirates will head to New<lb />York this weekend to face Syra-<lb />cuse Friday at 7 p.m. and Stony<lb />Brook Sunday at 12 p.m.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinain.com<lb /><lb />&amp;<lb /><lb /></p>
