<lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />Vick Ts legal<lb /><lb />WOES<lb /><lb />Is he just a victim of racial<lb />profiling?<lb /><lb />JASON PATTY<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Michael Vick has pled guilty to a federal dog fighting<lb />conspiracy charge. He has issued a halfhearted apology<lb />because what he did was overy immature. ? He has also<lb />found Jesus in record time. Mr. Vick, what you did was<lb />well beyond overy immature. ?<lb /><lb />I am certainly no supporter of PETA, but they have<lb />hit the nail on the head this time. I had to turn the videos<lb />that they collected off when they aired on TV because I was<lb />sick tomy stomach. The things that Vick funded, allowed<lb />to happen at his house, and worst ofall, participated in, are<lb />downright stomach-turning.<lb /><lb />However, what is most frustrating and infuriat-<lb />ing is the NAACP Ts support of Vick and their claim<lb />that his treatment by the media is because he is black.<lb />Are they kidding? Oneof the most high-profile fig-<lb />ures in the NF Lis constantly in trouble with the law,<lb />is caught with an extensive dog fighting operation<lb />on his property (including devices for electrocution<lb />and rape so that he could breed dogs that would kill<lb />each other if not restrained), admits his guilt, and<lb />the NAACP has the gall to announce that he is being<lb />treated unfairly because he is black.<lb /><lb />Michael Vick is not being mistreated because of<lb />his race, he is. being attacked by the media and most<lb />of the general public because of his direct role in a<lb />disgusting activity that conflicts with any decent<lb />person Ts basic humanity. If Tom Brady or Matt Lein-<lb />art had been involved in the same sort of horrible<lb />activities, they would be equally vilified for it.<lb /><lb />R.L. White, the president of the Atlanta chapter<lb />of the NAACP, said that o. . in terms of people Ts judg-<lb />ment of his guilt, that Ts essentially racial profiling.<lb />He Ts been completely vilified. ? Mr. White, you are<lb />correct that Michael Vick has been vilified by the<lb />media, but it isn Tt because of the color of his skin, it<lb />is because of his absolute lack of basic humanity.<lb /><lb />Sources for this column include the following<lb />websites:<lb /><lb />msnbc.msn.com/id/20096856/site/news-<lb />week/ and ajc.com/news/content/sports/falcons/<lb />stories/2007/08/27/vicktext_0827.html<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Back to<lb />school...again<lb /><lb />Or take it from the old guy<lb /><lb />J.D. LEWIS<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />You-know how nearly every class has that one creepy<lb />old guy that all the girls are scared ofand all the guys just<lb />wonder why he Ts there in the first place? Hi, kids!<lb /><lb />This semester marks my triumphant return to<lb />ECU. I last walked the hallowed halls of Brewster<lb />nine years ago in pursuit of a history degree. How-<lb />ever, a series of poor choices, bad decisions and out-<lb />right laziness allowed it to slip through my fingers.<lb /><lb />I'm very fortunate that I have been able to come back<lb />and become that old guy I made fun of so long ago ...and<lb /> T that you all make fin ofnow. Don't worry, ladies, I'm really<lb />harmless; just a sad teddy bear (Le., afraid of my wife).<lb /><lb />A few things have changed since my first tour of<lb />duty at ECU. I still have to park 40 miles away at the<lb />football stadium, but, if memory serves, those hunt-<lb />ing licenses we have to purchase in order to be able<lb />to park at the stadium are about $20 cheaper now.<lb /><lb />I never had a professor nine years ago who didn Tt<lb />think their class was the only one a student had, so they<lb />felt free to require 10 or 12 different books, expecting<lb />us to read them all, but knowing we wouldn Tt. Those<lb />overpriced books I'll never use again are even more<lb />overpriced now, but somewhere along the way our<lb />professors opened their eyes and took pity, and now I<lb />only have one class with more than three books.<lb /><lb />A word about those books, ladies and gentlemen:<lb />no one Ts going to hold a gun to your head and make<lb />you go broke at the bookstore. There Ts this nifty<lb />invention called Amazon.com, and there are kind<lb />professors out there who will provide you with a<lb />list of texts if you just ask nicely. I didn Tt purchase a<lb />single book at the Student Stores, and I saved $85.<lb />That may not sound like much in the grand scheme<lb />of things, but it Ts two tanks of gas I don Tt have to<lb />worry about, or dinner at Outback with the wife and<lb />a lot of Jack and Cokes.<lb /><lb />Speaking of the Student Stores, something I Tve<lb />noticed now that I've grown older and fatter is that the<lb />distance between there and Brewster has grown by about<lb />ahalfa mile. I guess I'll be buying blue books in bulk.<lb /><lb />The bus ride from the stadium to Brewster hasn Tt<lb />changed much, although I seem to recall the air condi-<lb />tioners on the buses actually working nine years ago<lb />before the onset of global warming. I was not surprised<lb />in the least however, when, on my first day back on<lb />the bus, a kid with what Jerry Seinfeld referred to as<lb />B.B.O. sat down next to me despite numerous empty<lb />seats all around us. 105-degree weather, no A/C and<lb />funky armpits a pleasant bus ride do not make.<lb /><lb />One thing that has changed is me. When I was at<lb />ECU the first time around, a lot of my current classmates<lb />were only eight years old. I had my chance and I blew<lb />it. I gave up on my dream of ever becoming a history<lb />professor who only assigns two books and for nine years<lb />I worked a dead-end job I hated with no future in sight.<lb /><lb />Now I've gotten a second chance, but at what cost?<lb />Nine years of my life and thousands of dollars I can Tt<lb />afford (and without the benefit of financial aid).<lb /><lb />Young people, make fun of the old guy all you want<lb />to, but pay attention to your professors too. Ask ques-<lb />tions. Read every word of those overpriced books. Don Tt<lb />start writing your papers at 4:00 in the morning on the<lb />day it Ts due at 8:00 (been there, done that). Don Tt screw<lb />up like I did. I'm lucky. Not everyone may be fortunate<lb />enough to get the second chance I did.<lb /><lb />Stick with it. Do your best. If you ever ride the bus<lb />with me, have the decency to put on some deodorant.<lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb /><lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />Zgr<lb />GA\ FINALLY, SOMeTHING<lb /><lb />ZS i<lb />A WE CAN BOTH AGREE ON!<lb /><lb />gees AN<lb /><lb />cae \N<lb /><lb />THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 6, 2007 PAGE A4<lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />If you want to teach the class, teach it.<lb />Otherwise, shut your mouth, and let the<lb />real professor do his or her job.<lb /><lb />{ Rants for everyone! }<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate Rants. The Real<lb />World, Newport Harbor, the late Laguna Beach...<lb />it is all crap. There is no substance to it other<lb />than just watching the participating ocharacters ?<lb />do-un-realistic things.<lb /><lb />The kids never seem to go to school or work<lb /> (save Stephen from the original Laguna Beach);<lb /><lb />they live in impossibly posh pads, and have no<lb /><lb />responsibilities except to party as often and as<lb />fashionably as possible. If everyone Ts oreality ? were<lb />like this, the world would certainly be more fun,<lb />but would be entirely slack and full of chaos.<lb />Every show seems to have the same character<lb />make-up. Espetially the always-present love<lb />triangle between a blonde girl, her boyfriend, and<lb /> the secretly seductive brown-haired boy and they<lb /> ohook-up ? behind the boyfriend Ts back.and so.on<lb />and there is a lot of whining.<lb />I guess it is impossible to portray REAL real-<lb />ity because frankly, it is boring. I am not going to<lb /><lb />lie; I have thought (just like everyone else who has<lb />possibly watched these television shows) that ifa<lb />camera followed me around it would be completely<lb />interesting and everyone in the world would what<lb />to know what was going on with my friends and<lb />me. NOT TRUE.<lb /><lb />No one wants to watch us go and sit in<lb />class, take notes, walk or ride to our respective<lb />residences and do homework and write papers (or<lb />articles, for that matter). The kids from Laguna<lb />eventually admitted that the producers led the<lb />storylines by feeding lines and ideas to the cast<lb />members. Which is weird: why bother calling it<lb />reality in the first place? If these kids were that<lb />boring to have to make up problems and lines, why.<lb />were they signed in the first place? Bring reality<lb /><lb />television to ECU and I am sure we would attract -<lb /><lb />a lot of fans.<lb />So I say, if you are going to fabricate reality,<lb /><lb /> T at least do it well and give them superpowers or<lb /><lb />something (Heroes), or, you know, let them break<lb />out into song and dance randomly (High School<lb />Musical). Let us<lb />not forget those individuals who spearheaded<lb /><lb />the assembly that wanted to refuse East<lb /><lb />Carolina College university status or fought<lb />against us having a dental school.<lb /><lb />Our founders didn Tt fight diligently to gain<lb />our university status just to have its student<lb />body wear apparel promoting other schools.<lb />Yes, your great-great grandparent may have<lb />given an endowment to UNC or your father<lb />may have laid the bricks at State, but you area<lb />student standing in T Pirate Country. It is time<lb />to start acting like it. When you wear those<lb />schools on campus, you're saying it is alright<lb />for them to look down on us and see that we Tre<lb />too scared to get behind our own school. Do<lb />you think their students wear purple and gold<lb />pirates on their campuses?<lb /><lb />The next time you think of spending $20<lb />on a shirt or hat representing another school,<lb />just remind yourself that you may be helping<lb />them buy one more basketball for practice, one<lb />more computer for learning or one more brick<lb />for building. If we are to be taken seriously<lb />by our neighbors to the west, it is time for<lb />us to start wearing our colors a little more<lb />proudly. :<lb /><lb />Our traditions here at ECU are proud<lb />and numerous and should be respected and<lb />honored. To believe otherwise is a contradic-<lb />tion and a slap in the face of those who have<lb />worked so hard to build this university into<lb />what it is today.<lb /><lb />It Ts easy to be a fair-weather Pirate when<lb />the sailing is easy and the treasure is close,<lb />but a ship divided cannot float. It is important<lb />now more than ever, as a student body, to help<lb />direct this university into the next 100 years,<lb />both academically and athletically.<lb /><lb />As the greatest band of pirates in history,<lb />itis up to us to decide how history remembers<lb />us. As students of the Centennial class of<lb />East Carolina, do we want to be remembered<lb />for flying the banners of other schools in the<lb />heart of Pirate Nation? On the other hand,<lb />do we want to be remembered as Pirates who<lb />bore the traditional royal purple and old gold<lb />with pride and honor?<lb /><lb />From now on, when you pull that East<lb />Carolina shirt over your head, remember that<lb />you're wearing the name of an idea and a vision<lb />that started over 100 years ago. When you put<lb />on your hat, know that there are those who<lb />have fought for you to wear. those colors.<lb /><lb />When you set foot on our beautiful campus,<lb /><lb />remember that you-are the embodiment of a<lb /><lb />plan and a dream set in motion by a group of<lb />noble educators long ago. If you have yet to be<lb />properly welcomed, it would be my proud plea-<lb /><lb /> gure. <p>THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 6, 2007<lb /><lb />PAGE AQ<lb /><lb />Sports<lb /><lb />recelve warm<lb />welcome<lb /><lb />GREG KATSKI<lb />SPORTS EDITOR<lb /><lb />It is a. day not soon to be<lb />forgotten by those in Blacks-<lb />burg, Va. On that fateful day,<lb />April 16, 2007, 32 Virginia Tech<lb />students were gunned down by<lb />one disturbed soul, while many<lb />others were injured and scarred<lb />for life.<lb /><lb />September 1, 2007 is also a<lb />day that will be remembered, as a<lb />time for healing and forgiveness,<lb />faith and sorrow and, of course,<lb />all-day tailgating and smash-<lb />mouth football.<lb /><lb />In a.scene unlike any other<lb />college football pregame party,<lb />ECU fans were invited, with<lb />open arms, to join the Hokie<lb />tailgating.<lb /><lb />Trucks and cars around the<lb />stadium donned window paint<lb />thanking the Pirates for their<lb />support and even in the stadium<lb />this sentiment was echoed.<lb /><lb />As part of Virginia Tech Ts<lb />pregame ceremonies, ECU Chan-<lb />cellor Steve Ballard, as well as<lb />Director of Athletics Terry Hol#<lb />land, presented a $100,00 check<lb />to the Hokie Spirit Memorial<lb />Fund to Virginia Tech Presi-<lb />dent Dr. Charles Steger at the<lb />50-yard-line. At the conclusion<lb />of the presentation two Virginia<lb />Tech cheerleaders held up a sign<lb />towards the fans at one end of<lb />the stadium that read oThank<lb />you ?, while two cheerleaders on<lb />the opposite endof the field held<lb />up a sign to the stands that read<lb /> oPirates ?. The crowd quickly<lb />joined in the chant, and by the<lb /><lb />end the stadium was so loud, the -<lb /><lb />sentiments could echo all the way<lb />to Greenville.<lb /><lb />A tribute video to the victims<lb />and heroes of April 16, 2007<lb />was also shown.during the cer-<lb />emonies. Fans throughout the<lb />stadium could be seen drying<lb />their eyes, as images of candle<lb />vigils, injured victims and memo-<lb /><lb />rial collages. flashed across the .<lb /><lb />scoreboard screen. The stadium<lb />was completely sober and silent<lb />for the minute and 40 seconds<lb />that the tribute ran, while oWalk<lb />Humbly Son ? by Eddie from Ohio<lb />gave the soundtrack to the emo-<lb />tional event. Julie Murphy-Wells,<lb />the lead singer of Eddie from<lb />Ohio, is a Virginia Tech alumnus,<lb />and no other song could have fit<lb />so well with the tribute.<lb /><lb />After 32 orange and maroon<lb />balloons were released from<lb />the field, each one symbolizing<lb />a victim of the tragedy, the<lb />teams were ready to play some<lb />football.<lb /><lb />Even this tradition was<lb />altered, as usually the visiting<lb />team takes the field first. On<lb />this special occasion, in a symbol<lb />of equality, both squads took<lb />the field at the same time while<lb /> oEnter Sandman T, the electrify-<lb />ing Metallica classic, roared<lb />throughout the stadium.<lb /><lb />Throughout the game. there<lb />were no jeers for the Pirates and<lb />a newfound respect was apparent<lb />between the two schools.<lb /><lb />ECU football Head Coach<lb />Skip Holtz may have encapsulated<lb />the emotion of the day best.<lb /><lb /> oIt was an honor for us to<lb />have the opportunity and come<lb />up here and play in such an<lb />emotional environment. for the<lb />Virginia Tech family, ? he said. oI<lb />really thought this was a special<lb />day and it was neat for us to be<lb />a part of it. ?<lb /><lb />{ECU Ts Inside Source}<lb /><lb />Pirates look to beat UNC for first<lb /><lb />KEYS 10<lb />THE GAME<lb /><lb />1. Make the Pirates throw the ball -<lb />ECU passed for 119 yards against Virginia<lb />Tech last Saturday. Patrick Pinkney and<lb />Dwayne Harris were both effective in run-<lb />ning the ball from the quarterback position,<lb />but the Pirates T longest pass completion<lb />was 17 yards and they only took a couple of<lb />shots downfield in the passing game. The<lb /><lb />Tar Heels need to load the box and stuff<lb /><lb />ECU Ts rushing attack, forcing Pinkney and<lb />the Pirate receivers to beat them.<lb /><lb />2. Get big plays from the wide re-<lb />ceiver position<lb /><lb />The Tar Heels T offense is led by its talented<lb />and athletic wide receivers. Sophomore Ha-<lb />keem Nicks was a freshman All-American<lb />last season. Quarterback TJ. Yates also<lb />has tall receivers in Brooks Foster, Bran-<lb />don Tate, Kenton Thornton and Greg Little<lb />to throw to. ECU Ts inexperienced secondary<lb />blew some coverages last week, something<lb />that UNC needs to exploit again this week.<lb /><lb />3. Win the battle at the line of<lb />scrimmage<lb /><lb />ECU dominated Virginia Tech on the offensive<lb />and defensive line, out-gaining the Hokies by 109<lb />rushing yards last Saturday. UNC Ts offensive line<lb />will have to protect Yates and its defensive line<lb />needs to penetrate ECU's offensive line and try to<lb />disrupt the Pirates T rushing attack.<lb /><lb />UNC SID<lb /><lb />DAVIS<lb /><lb /> oEast Carolina is a very difficult<lb />place to go and play. It is loud, it is<lb />enthusiastic, Ithinktheirfansdoagreat<lb />job getting behind their football team.<lb />That will obviously add an additional<lb />challenge to a young team on the road ?<lb /><lb />time in 32 years<lb /><lb />UNC will be making its second trip to Greenville<lb /><lb />JARED JACKSON<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />After a stellar performance last weekend, despite the loss to Virginia<lb />Tech, a feeling has spread around Greenville that this could be an exceptional<lb />football season in the making.<lb /><lb />But first, ECU will have to beat a bitter rival in North Carolina. The<lb /><lb />Pirates haven't played the Tar Heels since a 28-17 loss in UNC's first trip "<lb /><lb />to Greenville in 2003.<lb /><lb />The Pirates (0-1) haven't beat the Tar Heels (1-0) since 1975 and UNC<lb />holds an 8-1-1 advantage in the series.<lb /><lb /> oThis is obviously a great rivalry game for our fans, ? said ECU coach<lb />Skip Holtz. oI hope they [ECU fans] manage themselves with the same<lb />amount of class that we just experienced at the Virginia Tech game ... you<lb />can be fierce rivals on the field but ue can also play with excitement, emo-<lb />tion and sportsmanship.<lb /><lb /> oThat being said, it is still a rivalry for the East Carolina family. We are<lb />1-8-1 in our only 10 games with [the Tar Heels] and we have lost those by<lb />an average score of 35-10. Many of our players have played with kids on the<lb />North Carolina team and we know it will be a great challenge. ?<lb /><lb />Last weekend, the Tar Heels defeated bow] subdivision opponent James<lb />Madison 37-14, as freshman quarterback T.J. Yates went 13-of-18 for 218<lb />yards and three touchdowns. The game marked the beginning of the Butch<lb />Davis era in Chapel Hill and drew a crowd of over 58,000.<lb /><lb />While Holtz has no game experience against the Tar Heels, Davis has<lb />coached against the Pirates twice and it wasn Tt pleasant to say the least.<lb /><lb />Davis holds an 0-2 record against ECU, with both losses happening when<lb />he was coaching at the University of Miami. His 12"-ranked Hurricanes<lb />were beat convincingly, 31-6, in the Orange Bowl in 1996. In 1999 his Miami<lb />team blew a 20-point lead and lost to ECU, 27-23, in a game that was played<lb />at Carter-Finley stadium in Raleigh due to Hurricane Floyd.<lb /><lb /> oEast Carolina is a very difficult place to go and. play, ? Davis told the<lb />Assoicated Press Monday. oIt is loud. It is enthusiastic. Their fans do a<lb />great job getting behind their football team, and that obviously will add<lb />an additional challenge to a young team " being able to handle crowd noise<lb />and going on the road. ?<lb /><lb />While ECU played three quarterbacks against Virginia Tech, junior<lb />Patrick Pinkney stood out, going 14-of-265 for 115 yards and adding 48<lb />rushing yards.<lb /><lb />According to Holtz, there was no controversy in selecting the starting<lb />quarterback against the Tar Heels.<lb /><lb /> oRight now this is Patrick Pinkey Ts job and he deserves it, ? said Holtz. oI<lb />was impressed with the way he played and protected the ball. He managed<lb />the game well, he gave a spark of enthusiasm to our offense and I think that<lb />is what our young football team needs right now. When [Kass] made the<lb />decision he did, he gave up the spot and LE ey | did a nice job of step-<lb />ping up and taking it. ?<lb /><lb />They're are certain aspects of the Tar Heel Ts offense that concern Holtz<lb />going into Saturday.<lb /><lb /> oThe thing that scares me the most about them right now is their skill<lb />players, ? he said. oThey have some wide receivers that have big play potential<lb />and their quarterback has a rope for an arm. They throw the deep ball well<lb />and what concerns me are the uncontested deep balls we gave up against<lb /><lb />_ Virginia Tech, knowing that is one of [UNC's] strengths. ?<lb /><lb />The Tar Heels deep core of talented receivers is led by sophomore<lb />Hakeem Nicks, who earned freshman All-American honors after a stellar<lb />season last year. Junior Brooks Foster and wide receiver/kick returner<lb />Brandon Tate also provide explosiveness to the UNC offense.<lb /><lb /> oSome of their [UNC's] better athletes are the wide receivers, so we'll<lb />have to come in focused and try to put a stop to those guys, ? said the Pirates T<lb />starting strong safety Van Eskridge.<lb /><lb />UNC's defense is experienced, and Holtz expects the Pirates to face many<lb />of the same defensive strategies that they faced against VT.<lb /><lb /> oThey are strong up the middle and their defensive front is their<lb />strength, ? said Holtz. oWe saw this at Virginia Tech. I think their linebackers<lb />have an awful lot of experience. They are intelligent and smart and I think<lb />their safeties are very good football players. ?<lb /><lb />One Pirate who should be familiar with the UNC defense is junior defen-<lb />sive tackle Khalif Mitchell, who played for the Tar Heels for two seasons.<lb />Mitchell made one of the most famous plays in UNC football history when<lb />he sealed the win for the Tar Heels after causing N.C. State running back<lb />T.A. McClendon to fumble on the goal line as time expired in a thrilling<lb />2005 game in Chapel Hill.<lb /><lb />Mitchell has waited for over a year now to get a crack at his former team<lb />and now that the time is here, he is not shying away.<lb /><lb />_ oWhen we get this win in Dowdy-Ficklen it Ts going to be great, ? he<lb />said. oThese fans are going to go crazy and it is bragging rights for them<lb />and they deserve it. ?<lb /><lb />Mitchell Ts words undoubtedly echo a sense of confidence going into one<lb />of the biggest games in recent ECU football memory.<lb /><lb />And if the Pirates record a victory Saturday, most will tell you this one<lb />has been 32 years in the making.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />FOOTBALL PREVIEW<lb /><lb />. put pressure on the Tar Heels.<lb /><lb />better teams on the east coast and in the<lb /><lb />KEYS TO<lb />THE GAME:<lb /><lb />1.Get the offense going early<lb /><lb />lf ECU is going to beat the Tar Heels for the<lb />first time in 32 years, the offense must come<lb />out of the gate swinging. The Pirates cannot<lb />come out and go three and out during the<lb />first few possessions. Starting quarterback<lb />Patrick Pinkney must do a good job of man-<lb />aging the game to set ECU up with scoring<lb />opportunities early.<lb /><lb />2.Don Tt allow the deen ball<lb /><lb />Against Virginia Tech, the Pirates gave up some<lb />uncontested deep balls. You can bet Butch Davis<lb />knows this and will look deep to Hakeem Nicks<lb />and Brooks Foster early and often. If the Pirates<lb />are determined to stop the Tar Heels then their<lb />corners must play well or it could make for a<lb />long day in Dowdy-Ficklen.<lb /><lb />3.The Crowd<lb /><lb />In college football the crowd is one of the<lb />most important parts of the game. The errant pass fell<lb />right into the palms of Virginia<lb />Tech defensive back Victor<lb />Harris, who scampered down<lb />the sideline and dove across the<lb />hash mark for a touchdown with<lb /><lb />about three minutes remaining<lb />in the first half.<lb /><lb />After the game, ECU coach<lb />Skip Holtz defended his play<lb />calling decision.<lb /><lb /> oWe were backed up, we<lb />tried to run a fullback belly on<lb />first down and got about half a<lb />yard so I said, oHeck, let Ts take a<lb />chance T, ? Holtz said. oWe maxi-<lb />mum protected it; we kept both<lb />backs in, we kept both tight ends<lb />in and ran Jamar Bryant on a<lb /><lb />fly pattern. My thought was we<lb />would get a one-on-one jump<lb />ball or if they ran a turn and roll<lb />coverage toward him and double<lb />team him, we throw it high and<lb />outside and it Ts incomplete and<lb />it Ts third down. ?<lb /><lb />ECU outperformed the<lb />Hokies for most of the first<lb />half, holding a 7-3 lead deep<lb />into the second quarter. The<lb />Pirates were efficient on offense<lb />and dominating on defense, but<lb /><lb />it was Virginia Tech Ts special<lb />teams that shifted the momen-<lb />tum of the game with a play of<lb />pure oBeamer Ball. ?<lb /><lb />After the Hokies failed to<lb />move the ball with exceptional<lb />field position, Virginia Tech-<lb />coach Frank Beamer opted to<lb />punt. The Pirates lost<lb />the first two matches, but beat<lb />Winthrop, 3-1.<lb /><lb />On Tuesday, August 28,<lb />ECU played UNC Greensboro<lb />in Minges Coliseum. Zentner and<lb /><lb />Wernert sustained the Pirate Ts.<lb /><lb />powerful offensive attack with<lb />four kills each, as well as an ace<lb />from Wernert, to give ECU the<lb />second game 30-20.<lb /><lb />The third game gave way to<lb />amomentum swing, as UNC-G<lb />came back with a strong lead<lb />from the onset. During ECU Ts<lb />first timeout of the match, the<lb />Spartans lead, 10-4. Wernert<lb />tried to pull the Pirates ahead<lb />with seven kills during the<lb />game, but the effort proved to<lb />be insufficient as the Spartans<lb />took the third game 30-18.<lb /><lb />After the scare, ECU came<lb /><lb />back with some persistent offen-<lb />sive power.
