Most<lb />students and faculty have seen<lb />the advertisements of confused-<lb />looking students marketing the<lb />new database system.<lb /><lb />The information from One-<lb />stop is being transferred to navi-<lb />gational tools on Banner.<lb /><lb />To ease this transition, the<lb />programmers and developers are<lb />using the same Onestop interface<lb />to allow students to have access<lb />to Banner. : ;<lb /><lb />The largest additional feature<lb />that has been added to Onestop<lb />by Banner thus far has been the<lb />Self Service Access, according<lb />to. Kim Thornburn, lead project<lb />database manager for Banner.<lb /><lb />This allows students to access<lb />all of their personal information<lb />on Banner through a series of<lb />links. The Self Service feature is<lb />accessible under the tools page-<lb />of Onestop.<lb /><lb />Through this feature, stu-<lb />dents can easily access things<lb /><lb />that used to be primarily supplied "<lb /><lb />by Onestop, such as schedules,<lb />adding or dropping classes,<lb />checking for any holds on their<lb />records and éven altering their<lb />mailing information.<lb /><lb />Some students feel that these<lb />changes came at the wrong<lb />time and are finding it dif-<lb />ficult to make the transition.<lb /><lb /> oI don Tt think they should<lb />have done it [switched to Banner]<lb /><lb />see TRANSITION page A7<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /> oAt least we know the stu-<lb />dents are here at ECU and not<lb />downtown or getting in trouble, <lb />said Carol Woodruff, chair of the<lb />WOW committee:<lb /><lb />Some of the major events<lb />that will take place during<lb />August include Student Lead-<lb />ership Day, Honors Induction<lb />Ceremony, Pirate Palooza,<lb />Late Night Art Institute<lb />and Comedy Central Ts Mike<lb />Birbiglia Ts Secret Public Tour.<lb /><lb />Activities such as fitness<lb />classes, luncheons, symposiums,<lb />cookouts, concerts, orienta-<lb />tions, meet and greets, job fairs<lb />and interest meetings will occur<lb />during the first month of the<lb />program as well.<lb /><lb />A separate brochure will<lb />be printed out each month that<lb />will give a schedule of events for<lb /><lb />stCarolinian<lb /><lb />{ www.theeastcarolinian.com }<lb /><lb />Weeks of Welcome program<lb />kicks off the school year<lb /><lb />WELCOME BACK<lb /><lb />STUDENTS<lb /><lb />MONDAY AUGUST 20, 2007<lb /><lb />that particular month.<lb /><lb />One of the events scheduled<lb />for September is the Get-a-Clue<lb />program sponsored by the Stu-<lb />dent Organization Center.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts a great opportunity for<lb />the freshman students to learn<lb />about most of the student orga-<lb />nizations on campus, said Alex<lb />Davis, assistant director for the<lb />Student Organization Center.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts the largest organization<lb />fair of the year. <lb /><lb />These activities will intro-<lb />duce the incoming students<lb />to.college life and give them<lb />the chance to become an active<lb />part in the campus community.<lb /><lb /> oWOW is: a wonderful<lb />opportunity for students to get<lb />involved early on in the semes-<lb />ter, said Stephanie Dicken,<lb />marketing chair for WOW.<lb /><lb /> oThis helps them make<lb />friends and feel connected to<lb />the university. <lb /><lb />To spread the word about<lb />WOW, a marketing campaign<lb />was initiated which involved<lb />launching a Web site, directly<lb />mailing information to faculty,<lb />freshman and transfer students,<lb />advertising and using promo-<lb />tional materials.<lb /><lb />Some of the promotional<lb />materials used T to market the<lb />program include T-shirts, slap<lb />bracelets, brochures, scratchpads<lb />and stickers.<lb /><lb /> oI worked closely with Carol<lb />Woodruff to plan and implement<lb />the marketing strategy for this<lb />year Ts Weeks of Welcome, <lb />Dicken said.<lb /><lb />see WOW page A7<lb /><lb />SGA officers Andrew Griffin, interim vice president and Guillaume Bagal, treasurer prepare for another year.<lb /><lb />SGA faces changes in leadership<lb /><lb />and sets plans for the future<lb /><lb />Platform-goals and<lb />elections<lb /><lb />KIMBERLY BELLAMY<lb />NEWS EDITOR ©<lb /><lb />SGA has spent the summer<lb />going through leadership changes<lb /><lb />_ in the executive branch and work-<lb /><lb />ing on goals for the fall semester.<lb /><lb />While SGA president<lb />Keri Brockett and SGA trea-<lb />surer Guillaume Bagal still<lb />hold the positions the stu-<lb />dent body voted them to, two<lb />new officers were appointed.<lb /><lb />Dena Mazie, former SGA<lb /><lb />secretary, and Phillip Kendall,<lb /><lb />former SGA vice president, both<lb />resigned this summer.<lb /><lb />They each had other com-<lb />mitments that prevented them<lb />from fully devoting their atten-<lb />tion to the responsibilities of<lb />their positions, according to<lb />Brockett.<lb /><lb /> oIt is somewhat difficult<lb />having two positions resign but<lb /><lb />they had other obligations to<lb /><lb />attend to, Brockett said.<lb />Interims have been selected<lb />by Brockett to fill the vacancies<lb />for the summer until elections<lb />occurred in the fall.<lb /> Andrew Griffin was<lb />appointed as the interim vice<lb />president and James Wagner was<lb /><lb />selected as the interim secretary.<lb /><lb />Ironically, Wagner ran for<lb />the position as secretary in<lb />the spring elections and was<lb />defeated by Mazie. :<lb /><lb /> oJames is the chief of staff<lb />currently and is Ta very strong<lb />young leader. <lb />Letter from<lb />the Editor:<lb /><lb />Within the next few days, classes will begin again<lb />and many of you may wonder what you have to lock for-<lb />ward to this semester besides the long lectures, hours<lb />of homework and mind-pumbing study sessions.<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian can always be counted on as<lb />a source for campus news. This year, we are aiming to<lb />combine our dedication to news with further consider-<lb />ation of the needs and wants of students.<lb /><lb />We will be striving to give all students a voice by<lb />providing a more campus-oriented newspaper. Personally, I have never had the guts to<lb />rush because I have heard the so-called horror sto-<lb />ries. However, fair amounts of my friends are Greek,<lb />and I cannot help but to unsuccessfully attempt to<lb />pry into the secrets surrounding these associations.<lb /><lb />In the past few months, Kay Christian, the<lb />head of the Greek Life department at East Caro-<lb />lina, fielded a few of my questions and explained<lb />the council, Pan-Hellenic and National Pan-Hel-<lb />lenic, and rules thing to me. This is definitely<lb />more complicated than parties, drunken nights<lb />and hazing.<lb /><lb />_I am not going to lie; I used to view the<lb />Greek system as a way for people with lacklus-<lb />ter personalities to buy themselves some decent<lb />friends who are also somewhat boring. This was<lb />definitely wrong (I am blaming society). People<lb />who are able to survive the commitment of'rush<lb />and pledging (a period of being oaccepted as a<lb />member) have gall.<lb /><lb />I mean, there is a whole week of learning all<lb /><lb />about these specific organizations, designated meet<lb /><lb />and greets and philanthropy education.. I think<lb />this is what changed my mind, the fact that all of<lb /><lb />most interesting secret of Greek Life. One: who<lb />comes up with these horrible ideas (if they really<lb />do happen), and two: if one signs up for it, why<lb />complain? Yes, I get that there have to be limits,<lb />mostly you know, stopping somewhere before fatal<lb />injury or extreme mental abuse. However, if you<lb />are going to join, you have to oprove your worth, <lb />right? Plus, from what I have heard, a lot of it<lb />focuses on learning information about the history<lb />of the organization, and how is that bad?<lb /><lb />How is that any different from any other orga-<lb />nizdtion? The ohazing may not be as blatant, but<lb />there is a test period for everything; we have to be<lb />worth our salt to walk in the light.<lb /><lb />Therefore, no matter what happens, the Greek<lb />system will have my respect, because how can I be<lb /><lb />_down on something that promotes life-long friend-<lb />ships and genuinely challenges people? In addition,<lb />think of the networking potential through alumni,<lb />fellows and the Pan-Hellenic councils.<lb /><lb />Sometimes I wonder if I am missing out on<lb />a really important experience (especially on<lb />Wednesdays when all the Greeks wear their<lb />pins/t-shirts and things). Greek Life is not for all<lb />of us, but kudos for those brave enough to take<lb />the plunge. When you do, will you fill me in on<lb />some secrets? :<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />What can<lb /><lb />Evangelicals<lb />do for you?<lb /><lb />More than you may think...<lb /><lb />YAZID FINN<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />School is back and with it, I have a lot to look<lb />forward to. New classes, new faces and a lot more<lb />capture the flag. But with the return of school<lb />comes another seasonal event I look forward to<lb />almost religiously.<lb /><lb />I will give you a hint: it involves the ofree<lb />speech zone of our campus and normally ends<lb />with police idly standing around. That Ts right! The<lb />Evangelicals are back!<lb /><lb />I'm not lying when I say this is quality free<lb />entertainment. Just think, it does not cost one cent<lb />and does not involve late night drama on Fifth<lb />Street. If you consider their presence anything<lb />other than a spectacle of basic human nature, you<lb />are wasting your time.<lb /><lb />Attempting to label these encounters as dis-<lb />cussions and debates is simply a misnomer. By the<lb />time you take a moment to backtrack the fallacious<lb />arguments posed by Lae in attendance, things<lb />will have already turned into a shouting match.<lb /><lb />All parties involved seem to steal their tac-<lb />tics from Bill O'Reilly, assuming the louder you<lb />scream your retort, the more correct your side<lb />appears to be.<lb /><lb />Knowing this, I search for these visitors. I<lb />walk past the mall area and pan my eyes as if I am<lb />looking for a parking space.<lb /><lb />When I hear the shouts of distressed students<lb />or a Pentecostal Holiness Christian, I look around<lb />as. if someone has blown a dog whistle. I mean seri-<lb />ously, who cares about English class or Political<lb />Science when there are Evangelicals on campus!<lb /><lb />Sure the topic of oreligion seems to carry a<lb />taboo-ish stigma when presented in a public form,<lb />but it is no worse than politics. With this in mind,<lb />I will yield that our campus visitors are good for<lb />one other thing, for both theists and atheists alike.<lb />They do get students talking and involved. Now, "<lb />granted, I may be too much of a people person<lb />when it comes to religion, going as far as inviting<lb />the preachers to lunch for actual conversations. Or<lb />grabbing them a cup of hot chocolate on those cold<lb />November Fridays.<lb /><lb />However, do not be fooled, as it is these lunches<lb />and warm handfuls of cocoa that fuel their passion<lb />to continue to do what they do best on our campus:<lb />cause students to stop walking outside the library<lb />and give them something to watch for an hour.<lb /><lb />Hope to see you guys out there as I know I<lb />will be.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb />G2007 Harry Biss, Distributed by Tribune Media Services, Inc, 8/23, tif<lb />Filet)<lb /><lb />www. harrybliss.com<lb /><lb /> o| didn Tt forget your birthday.<lb /><lb />| forgot it was today. <lb />Sarah Campbell<lb />Editor in Chief<lb />Kimberly Bellamy Rachel King<lb />» News Editor Opinion Editor<lb />Greg Katski Ronnie Woodward<lb /><lb />Sports Editor Asst. Unfortunately, a major- |<lb /><lb />ity of students don Tt use their<lb />resources until senior year.<lb /><lb />. Many times, students do not<lb />realize that they should begin<lb />preparing for future careers as<lb />early as possible.<lb /><lb /> oStudents should get work<lb />experience as early as the<lb />summer of freshman year, said<lb />Bruce Maxwell, associate direc-<lb />tor at the career center.<lb /><lb />One of the first steps to get-<lb />ting this experience is figuring<lb />out what type of degree and<lb />career you want to do.<lb /><lb /> oIf a student focuses on a<lb />certain job title, that Ts help-<lb />ful. If not, that turns out to<lb />be overwhelming, Maxwell<lb />said.<lb /><lb /> oUndergrads should use<lb /><lb />- till 2AM everyday<lb />¢ 1/2 PRICE APPETIZERS<lb /><lb />M - F 5PM - 7PM<lb /><lb />° 1/2 PRICE BOTTLES OF WINE +<lb />EVERY THURSDAY =<lb /><lb />Career GPS to help them identify<lb />careers they want to be in and<lb />what degree they want to earn. <lb /><lb />Career GPS is a program<lb />created by ECU to help you<lb />identify what Ts best for you. It<lb />lets choose what you like, dis-<lb />like or feel neutral about differ-<lb />ent workplace settings.<lb /><lb />Another way to gain<lb />information needed to<lb />acquire a job is by using<lb />Reference USA, which is<lb />provided by Joyner Library.<lb /><lb />Reference USA is an elec-<lb />tronic database the gives you<lb />a list of 14 million. companies<lb />nationwide. This database gives<lb />students contact information to<lb />network and search for jobs.<lb /><lb />Students could also use one<lb />of the Career Center services<lb />online, which happens to be<lb />one of about 12 in the U.S.,<lb />according to Maxwell.<lb /><lb />One of the best ways to<lb />get information about career<lb />exploration is to talk to one of<lb />the professional staff members<lb />face-to-face.<lb /><lb /> oInformation about<lb />opportunities is found<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />through faculty who encour-<lb />age students to participate<lb />in career and professional<lb />development opportunities, <lb />said Catrina Davis, assistant<lb />director at the Career Center.<lb /><lb />The Career Center offers ser-<lb />vices such as class or organiza-<lb />tional presentations by request,<lb />or in the event that a faculty<lb />member needs to cancel class.<lb /><lb /> oMany faculty invite us<lb />to speak to their classes on<lb />numerous Career topics, <lb />Davis said.<lb /><lb />To inform faculty of these<lb />services, the center sends<lb />out an email to the faculty<lb />on their distribution list at<lb />the beginning of the semes-<lb />ter, according to Maxwell.<lb /><lb />Some events the center has<lb />planned for the fallinclude the Part<lb />Time Job Fair on August 21 and<lb />the Fall Career Fair on October 4.<lb /><lb />To find out more about the<lb />Career Center, call them at 328-<lb />6050 or visit their Web site at<lb />ecu.edu/e3careers.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />woW<lb /><lb />continued from Al<lb /><lb />Multiple university depart-<lb />ments were involved in contrib-<lb />uting their ideas and resources<lb />to this program.<lb /><lb />The Honors program, Hous-<lb />ing, Dining, Campus Ministry,<lb />Student Recreation Center<lb />and Ledonia Wright Cultural<lb />Center are just a few of the<lb />university departments that are<lb />involved in WOW.<lb /><lb />Planning for WOW started<lb />in the early part of the 2007<lb />spring semester.<lb /><lb /> oThe first introductory<lb />meetings was held in February, <lb />Woodruff said.<lb /><lb />Some activities are being<lb />discussed to add to the sched-<lb />ule of events that students can<lb />participate in.<lb /><lb />To develop a sense of ECU<lb />tradition and pride, the option<lb />of getting a big vinyl copy of the<lb />university creed for student's sig-<lb />natures is being discussed.<lb /><lb />To find out more about this<lb />program, you can visit their<lb />Web site at ecu.edu/wow.<lb /><lb />This writer may be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />TRANSITION<lb /><lb />continued from Al<lb /><lb />before everyone was trying to<lb />enroll in classes, said Jason<lb />Glisson, junior anthropology<lb />major.<lb /><lb />Several students are attempt-<lb />ing to avoid Banner all together.<lb /><lb /> oI actually had my advisor<lb />take care of it [class schedule], <lb />said Jimmy Heritage, graduate<lb />sports management student.<lb /><lb />Additional changes include<lb />the use of the Banner ID<lb />instead of one Ts social secu-<lb />rity number and changes<lb />in the class registration.<lb /><lb />More changes will be made<lb />in the future that will slowly<lb />decrease student's and faculty Ts<lb />need to use Onestop.<lb /><lb />The ITCS department plans<lb />to integrate the system piece-<lb />by-piece so that the changes<lb />will not become overwhelming.<lb /><lb />Further alterations to One-<lb />stop by Banner are straightfor-<lb />ward. In previous years,<lb />some of these would have<lb />' been classified as larcenies. <lb />Though no one would like<lb /><lb /> to think that larceny could<lb /><lb />happen to them, students<lb />should write down serial<lb />numbers of important pos-<lb /><lb />sessions so that they can be.<lb /><lb />identified if recovered.<lb /><lb />The police department<lb />offers Operation I.D., in<lb />which identification such<lb />as driver Ts license numbers<lb />are engraved on valuable<lb />items like computers so that<lb />they can be returned later if<lb />stolen.<lb /><lb />In the end, common sense<lb />is the easiest way to help keep<lb /><lb /> the campus safe.<lb /><lb /> oBe mindful of your sur-<lb />roundings. Couple<lb /><lb />that with a mountain of stress .<lb /><lb />and the weakened immune<lb />system that usually comes with<lb />it and you are in for one ghastly<lb />school year.<lb /><lb />Thankfully, ECU has plenty<lb />of helpful options when it comes to<lb />battling this ominous triple threat. ¢<lb /><lb />The Student Recreation Si.<lb />Center, located on the west end 5@<lb /><lb />of campus, is the first line of §<lb />defense when it comes to avoid- §<lb />ing or getting rid of the ofresh- 8<lb />man 15. The SRC offers many »<lb />ways to keep students healthy, 9<lb />from exercise to a variety of<lb />nutritional programs.<lb /><lb />Karen Warren, Direc-<lb />tor of Campus Wellness, has<lb />worked hard to develop many<lb />programs that are designed<lb />to keep Pirates healthy.<lb /><lb /> oWe have nutritional pro-<lb />grams focused on avoiding the<lb /> freshman 15, said Warren, oWe<lb />also have fitness classes such as<lb />aerobics, dance classes and other<lb />health-oriented classes dealing<lb />with various topics such as sexual<lb />health and alcohol awareness. <lb />The SRC has a nutritionist on<lb />staff that offers nutritional advice<lb />as well as very helpful cooking<lb />demos. However, the SRC doesn Tt<lb />Just stop at teaching nutritional<lb />eating habits. The wellness edu-<lb />cators at the SRC also help stu-<lb />dents make informed choices by .<lb />stressing the need to think about<lb />the consequences that come with<lb />college life, not just on campus,<lb /><lb />STUDEN<lb />HEALTH<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />ECU Ts Student Health Center is free to all students, and offers services to keep them healthy, prevent disease, and to educate about nutrition.<lb /><lb />but around the community.<lb /><lb /> oWe have outreach programs<lb />that go out to residence halls,<lb />Greek houses and various other<lb />places that teach students about<lb />becoming and staying healthy. <lb />Warren said.<lb /><lb />To get a more hands-on<lb />approach to what the SRC has to<lb />offer, students can work out on<lb />one of the center Ts many state-of-<lb />the-art machines or join a club<lb />sports team or the adventure<lb />program. The SRC offers many<lb />club sports such as frisbee, golf,<lb />baseball, basketball, fencing<lb />and many more. The adventure<lb />program allows students to go<lb />backpacking, rock climbing,<lb />mountain biking, surfing and<lb /><lb />hol:<lb /><lb />more. Students can use the SRC<lb />without cost, but involvement in<lb />the adventure club costs extra<lb />depending on the activity.<lb /><lb />For immune system health,<lb />students are always free to<lb />make use of the student health<lb />center. Shante McMillian, health<lb />educator, says that two of the<lb />health centers main goals are to<lb />educate students on both sexual<lb />health and about drugs and alco-<lb /> oWe have many programs<lb />coming up this fall. McMil-<lb />lian said, oWe have [sexually<lb />transmitted infection] education<lb />programs coming up in which<lb />we will be able to do free test-<lb />ing for Chlamydia and free rapid<lb />HIV tests. <lb /><lb />The health center is also<lb />conducting programs dealing<lb />with sexual assault awareness.<lb />Besides sexual health, the center<lb />focuses on installing healthy<lb />eating habits in students. In Sep-<lb />tember, students will be able to<lb />get free tastes of healthy snacks<lb />at the health center thanks to<lb />their ongoing campaign to get<lb />students to eat healthier. Also,<lb />the center works with other<lb />departments to help students<lb />manage stress. Because stress<lb />control is a major factor in stay-<lb />ing healthy, the center ois com-<lb />mitted to maintaining a minimal<lb />stress environment for the ECU<lb />campus McMillian said.<lb /><lb />Like the SRC, the health<lb /><lb />center has various outreach pro-<lb />grams that go through campus<lb />and beyond to educate students<lb />about health issues.<lb /><lb /> oI go out to different resi-<lb />dences as well as individual<lb />classrooms to educate students<lb />on health issues. McMillian said.<lb /><lb />Basic services at the health<lb />center are free for any full-time<lb />student. Students can find out<lb />more information about the stu-<lb />dent health service by visiting<lb />ecu.edu/studenthealth.,<lb /><lb />For more information about<lb />the SRC, visit their Web site at<lb />ecu.edu/cs-studentlife/crw.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb /> Ledonia Wright Cultural<lb />Center celebrates a<lb /><lb />Students can look<lb />forward to events all<lb />semester long<lb /><lb />DAVID PUCKETT<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The Ledonia Wright Cultural<lb />Center will host many events<lb />this fall to educate others on cul-<lb />tural differences and to promote<lb />unity.<lb /><lb /> oWe build oufselves asa hub<lb />of cultural activity on campus, <lb />said Lathan Turner, Assistant<lb />Vice Chancellor of Intercultural<lb />Student Affairs for the center.<lb /> oWe do workshops, programs,<lb />sponsored speakers and events to<lb />try to educate the broader com-<lb />munity here. o<lb /><lb />To kick off the new school<lb />year, LWCC will be hosting a<lb />cookout on Aug. 23. Last year, some<lb />students wrote prejudiced and<lb />discriminatory slurs on a wooden<lb />board between Mendenhall and<lb />LWCC. The display, now known<lb />as the oWall of Hate, T represents<lb /><lb />oppression of others throughout ¢ =<lb />human history. The wall is part 8 3]<lb /><lb />of a week-long program called S<lb /><lb /> oHate Out Week, which consists of<lb />of different events each day that Sf<lb /><lb />will promote unity, tolerance and<lb />the understanding of differences<lb />on ECU Ts campus. That Friday,<lb /> othe wall is symbolically broken<lb />down, which signifies tearing<lb />down oppression, Turner said.<lb /><lb />The day after the destruction<lb />of the oWall of Hate, an Academic<lb />Recognition Ceremony will take<lb />place to honor students of color<lb />with outstanding grade point<lb />averages.<lb /><lb />The Cultural Awareness<lb />committee will celebrate Native<lb /><lb />The Ledonia Wright Cultural Sard offers events to get all eeu students involved and promote diversity.<lb /><lb />American History Month<lb />with the showing of the film,<lb /> oEdge of America. The movie<lb />will be shown in the Mendenhall<lb />Student Center on Nov. 7, at 6<lb />p.m.<lb /><lb />Also, the LWCC is plan-<lb />ning a trip to New York City in<lb />December. All the details have<lb />not been confirmed, but for those<lb />interested, contact the center for<lb /><lb />updates on the activities that will<lb />take place.<lb /><lb />LWCC is located in the<lb />Bloxton House across from<lb />Mendenhall, and contains two<lb />computer labs, an art gallery,<lb />library and a multipurpose room.<lb /><lb />Students who are not famil-<lb /><lb />-jar with the center are urged to<lb /><lb />visit. .<lb /><lb /> oA lot is in here that... a lot<lb /><lb />of students do not know about, <lb />says Turner. oIt Ts a student fee-<lb />funded office, so we want stu-<lb />dents to know that we are here. <lb /><lb />For more information on pro-<lb />grams and events, visit LWCC Ts<lb />Web site at ecu.edu/lwec, or call<lb />(252) 328-6495.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />BSU kicks off semester with annual Black Top Party<lb /><lb />Proceeds to benefit<lb />ECU organizations<lb /><lb />CAT POTTER<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />Summer vacation is almost<lb />over and for college students,<lb />its back to hitting the books and<lb />getting back into that school<lb />routine.<lb /><lb />Fortunately for students<lb />still looking for a bit of linger-<lb />ing summer fun, ECU TS Black<lb />Student, Union organization T<lb />will be hosting its annual Black<lb />Top Party on Saturday; Aug.<lb /><lb />25 from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. in<lb />Mendenhall Student Center Ts<lb />great rooms.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts our first party of the<lb />school year, said Brittany Mack,<lb />BSU vice president.<lb /><lb />Though the event costs<lb />money ($4 with student ID,<lb />$8 without student ID, $2 for<lb />the first fifty ladies in black<lb />tops and one dollar off with<lb />can food contributions), all fees<lb />are used for various causes,<lb />beneficial not only to the<lb />campus community but to the<lb />greater community as a whole.<lb /><lb />According to BSU president -<lb /><lb />Patrick Dixon, partial proceeds<lb />go toward the BSU scholarship<lb />fund and canned food donations<lb />are given to local homeless<lb />shelters.<lb /><lb />The Black Top party was<lb />cleverly given its name because<lb />those in attendance are encour-<lb />aged to wear a black dress or shirt.<lb /><lb />This event has been very<lb />successful in years past for BSU,<lb />which is the largest registered<lb />organization on campus.<lb /><lb /> oAround 700 people came out<lb />to the event [last year] but some<lb />were turned away because the<lb />room capacity was filled. Soon after moving<lb />in, every person living in resi-<lb /><lb />dence halls is required to fill<lb />out the Roommate Agreement<lb />sheet. This guide is an open<lb />contract in which new room-<lb />mates discuss individual needs<lb />as well as offering solutions<lb />if a conflict arises during the<lb />course of the year. Resident<lb />advisors oversee the agreement<lb /><lb />_ and if necessary, refer back to<lb /><lb />it when dealing with issues. If<lb />there are any conflicts between<lb />roommates, Campus Living<lb />ensures the appropriate people<lb />will carry out the proper actions<lb />that will satisfy each individual.<lb /><lb />ECU junior Lea Bennett<lb />experienced conflict with her<lb /><lb />roommate during her freshmen -<lb /><lb />year at ECU. Paired up ran-<lb />domly by the university, Ben-<lb />nett recalls the animosity that<lb />grew through the year.<lb /><lb /> oMy roommate used most of<lb />my stuff and wore most of my<lb />clothes without asking. She was<lb />a messy person and even had<lb />her boyfriend stay for over two<lb />weeks. I eventually confronted<lb />her, but if she would have asked<lb />to borrow my stuff, I wouldn Tt<lb />have minded, said Bennett.<lb /><lb />Bennett stressed that during<lb /><lb />conflict, roommates should talk<lb />and maintain open communica-<lb />tion with each other. The poor<lb />communication between the<lb />two just led to problems and<lb />growing tension throughout<lb />the year.<lb /><lb />However, senior Crystal<lb />Packard remembers how she<lb />kept a great bond with her<lb />roommate her freshmen year<lb />living in Tyler Hall.<lb /><lb /> oIt was stressful at times,<lb />because it Ts not natural for two<lb />people to live in such a small<lb />space at one time. It was easy<lb />to sometimes get on each other<lb />nerves, but overall, we got along<lb /><lb />just fine. We knew each other Ts<lb /><lb />boundaries, and even though<lb />we had different personalities,<lb />we made living together work, <lb />said Packard.<lb /><lb />Roommates do not have to<lb />be best friends. They just need<lb />to be able to maintain a comfort-<lb />able atmosphere and be willing<lb />to compromise in case of con-<lb />flict. If problems still arise, the<lb />staff at Campus Living ensures<lb />that the appropriate actions<lb /><lb />see ROOMMATE page B7<lb /><lb /> "_ " " " " "<lb />7 Donate Plasma<lb /><lb />Brittany<lb /><lb />Major at ECU:<lb />Business "<lb />Hobbies:<lb />Surfing the web<lb />Why I donate:<lb />To buy clothes<lb />to go clubbing in<lb /><lb />and earn up to $170/mo<lb /><lb />Last month, we paid out $33,035 to 734<lb /><lb />good people.<lb /><lb />DCI Biologicals is always paying out this<lb />kind of cash. While the defensive line for ECU<lb />is suspected to be one of the best in school<lb />history, the Pirates will have to prove that<lb /><lb />running back the ACC has to offer.<lb /><lb />2. Protect Kass<lb /><lb />While injuries have depleted the returning<lb />veteran offensive line to some degree, the<lb />guys up front will have to perform better<lb />than a unit that ranked 77th nationally in<lb />pass protection last season. If they don Tt<lb />Rob Kass will be running for his life in his<lb />first start at quarterback and will likely<lb />ruin any chance of ECU knocking off the<lb />Hokies.<lb /><lb />3. Special Teams<lb /><lb />If the Pirates hope to make the game close<lb />then they will have to take advantage of<lb />every opportunity on special teams. Last<lb />year the offense stalled numerous times<lb /><lb />in field goal range only to come up with no<lb />points. Field position will also be key and<lb />protecting the punter as well. The Hokies<lb />are known for oBeamer ball which entails<lb />in punt and field goal blocks. :<lb /><lb />SID<lb /><lb />HOLTZ<lb /><lb /> It Ts a great honor for us to have<lb />the opportunity to go up there and<lb /> not only play Virginia Tech but also<lb />ay in an enthusiastic and exciting<lb />jatmosphere. When you<lb />ithe hurt and the healing that still<lb />eeds to happen at Virginia Tech,<lb />s going to be an emotional time<lb />for their fans and football team <lb /><lb />accolade on the field in stopping the finest<lb /><lb />look at.<lb /><lb />FOOTBALET PREVIEW<lb /><lb />ECU VS. VT<lb /><lb /> oHokie Nation <lb /><lb />Rob Kass set to make first start at Quarterback<lb /><lb />JARED JACKSON<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />All eyes will be on Blacksburg, Va. Sept. 1 as the collége football season<lb />kicks off for ECU when it matches up against national title hopeful and<lb />preseason ACC champion pick Virginia Tech in Lane Stadium at noon.<lb /><lb />The Hokies, winners of five straight over the Pirates in the all-time<lb />series, have a big top-10 match-up with No. 2 LSU in Baton Rouge the<lb />second week of the season, but after a gunman claimed 32 lives on the VT<lb />campus in the deadliest school shooting ever, the Pirates have become the<lb />Hokies number one priority in an effort by the football-laden community<lb />to bring back some sort of normalcy.<lb /><lb />Upon entering his third year, ECU football coach Skip<lb />Holtz knows the pre-game memorial ceremony will be emo-<lb />tional, but once it Ts game time both sides have to play football.<lb /><lb /> oWhen you look at the hurt and the healing that still needs to go on at<lb />Virginia Tech, it Ts going T to be a very emotional time for their family, for<lb />their fans, for their football team and it.will be an emotional time for our<lb />team, said Holtz, who owns a 12-13 overall record at the helm of ECU.<lb /><lb /> o] think that tragedy hit every college campus and every college student<lb />around the country because it could happen anywhere. So it Ts something<lb />that we're going to address and talk about, but the bottom line is once the<lb />memorials and everything else is done, the ball is going to be put on the<lb />tee and we have to play football. <lb /><lb />In the wake of the tragedy, ESPN selected the match-up between the<lb />Pirates and Hokies as the game of the day on the network, and is sending oCol-<lb />lege Gameday, the once-a-week pre-game college football special, featuring<lb />analysts Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso and Chris Fowler to Blacksburg, Va.<lb /><lb />Picked as a huge underdog by expert analysts,<lb />ECU and redshirt junior defensive tackle Khalif Mitch-<lb />ell believe the bowl game atmosphere will motivate the team.<lb /><lb /> oThe tragedy is going to make us play harder because we are going to<lb />be in an environment on the ESPN game of the day, he said. oThe students<lb />who were slain are students. We are.student athletes with student being a<lb />first priority and even though we love football it could have happened at<lb />any school. Everything happens for a reason and the tragedy, although bad<lb />in its nature, brought all universities together and when we go out there we<lb />will play for them [the victims] even though they were Hokies. <lb /><lb />ECU will enter the game with many questions surrounding the offensive<lb />unit. In his first start replacing former senior quaterback James Pinkney<lb />redshirt sophomore Rob Kass will face a Virginia Tech defense that has<lb />ranked No. 1 in total defense for the past two years.<lb /><lb /> oThe first game is going to be a tough task, without a doubt, said Kass,<lb />who completed 14-of-30 passes last year for 184 yards and one interception<lb />in limited playing time. oThey say that playing at Virginia Tech is one of<lb />the toughest places to play in the nation and I take that on asa challenge. <lb /><lb />Kass added, oI think that as long as I play within the system, under offensive<lb />coordinator Todd Fitch and head coach Skip Holtz, they will prepare me<lb />to go into any situation, not only against Virginia Tech but what any team<lb />on our schedule throws at us.<lb /><lb />Many of the struggles that ECU dealt with on offense last year were the<lb />result of an offensive line that opened up few holes, and ranked 77th nationally<lb />in pass protection. Kass will only be able to goas far as his line takes him and that<lb />means that they must protect him or it will make for one tough day in the pocket.<lb /><lb />After losing three of their, top four receivers to graduation, includ-<lb />ing standout Aundrae Allison to the Minnesota Vikings, the Pirates<lb />must turn to more raw receivers. Senior wide receiver Phillip Henry,<lb />a former walk-on who had 34 catches for 484 yards and 2 touchdowns<lb />in 2006, will be counted on as the most experienced and versatile of<lb />ECU's wideouts and is listed on the preseason depth chart as the first-<lb />unit slot receiver. Joining Henry on the first-unit aré sophomore Jamar<lb />Bryant, who caught 11 passes for 108 yds in 2006 and senior Steven<lb />Rogers, who averaged more than 17 yards on 22 catches last year.<lb /><lb />While the Hokies offense features stand out running back Bran-<lb />den Ore, who rushed for 1,187 yards and 16 touchdowns last season,<lb /><lb />the Pirates will look towards senior Chris Johnson to prove that he "<lb /><lb />is an all-purpose back. In 35 career games Johnson has rushed for<lb />1,559 yards and 19. touchdowns. Dominique Lindsay and redshirt<lb />freshman Norman Whitley will also add depth to the Pirates rush-<lb />ing attack that could prove to be one of the better units in C-USA.<lb /><lb />Everyone knows how tough the Hokies defense will be given the team Ts<lb />track record. However, the Pirates will be returning proven veterans across<lb />the defensive line and linebacker units. The imposing defensive line forms<lb />a tall front wall that averages about 6-foot-5. Against VT, defensive tackle<lb />Marcus Robinson could turn out to be the biggest key along the front after<lb />proving to be a consistent run stopper last year. Standing next to Robinson<lb />will be University of North Carolina transfer Khalif Mitchell. Marcus Hands<lb />and Zach Slate round out the unit as the starting defensive ends, explosive<lb />players that can wreak havoc on the opposing quarterback.<lb /><lb />The starting linebacker unit will be made up of juniors Quentin Cotton<lb />and Pierre Bell, while senior leader Fred Wilson will contain the middle<lb />after tallying 39 solo tackles last season. The defensive backs will be in<lb />transition mode going into the season. Former linebacker Van Eskridge<lb />has moved to free safety, while Chris Mattocks will helm the strong safety<lb />position. How well the Pirates pass defense succeeds, however, will be in<lb />the hands of cornerbacks Leon Best and Jerek Hewett.<lb /><lb /> oItwillbeawarand wehave to gooutand play likeitis thelast zameas we willdo<lb />every game, said Khalif Mitchell explaining themindset the PiratescomeSept. 1<lb /><lb />Win or lose, the Pirate faithful will use the VI game as a measuring<lb />stick to see how far the program has come in the last two years. But don Tt<lb />expect the boys from Greenville to lay down for the more talented Hokies.<lb />They are planning on winning and don Tt tell them otherwise.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Pirates face numerous eee in<lb /><lb />KEYS TO<lb />THE GAME.<lb /><lb />1. Use the emotion to their advantage<lb />The Hokies T are used to playing on national tele-<lb />vision, in front of 60,000+ fans, while the ECU<lb /><lb />players have never played in a game that will<lb /><lb /> receive as much attention as this one. Virginia<lb /><lb />Tech should be able to channel all the emotion<lb />that will be inside Lane Stadium better than<lb />ECU. The Hokies are 66-19 all-time in televised<lb />home games and haven't lost a home opener in<lb />Blacksburg since 1995, including three straight<lb />shutouts and outscoring their opponents 362-68<lb />since 2000.<lb />2. Put pressure on Kass<lb /><lb />I'm sure defensive coordinator Bud Foster, re-<lb />garded as one of the best defensive minds in the<lb />country, is well aware that ECU is breaking in a<lb />new quarterback for the first time since 2003.<lb />The Hokies should start blitzing ECU Ts young<lb />quarterback as soon as he steps off the bus.<lb />Zone blitz Ts, stunts, double teams and any other<lb />packages that Virginia Tech can throw at Kass<lb />will force him to make hard decisions under<lb /><lb />_ pressure.<lb /><lb />3. Make the big play early<lb /><lb />Virginia Tech is the heavy favorite, has superior<lb />talent, more experience and a big play early in<lb />the game could diminish the Pirates T chance of<lb />an upset. Whether it Ts a long run by Branden Ore<lb /><lb />- or a patented special teams play that Virginia<lb /><lb />Tech is known for, an early score will get the<lb />thousands of fans in Lane Stadium amped up<lb />and possibly start an avalanche that ECU can-<lb />not Stop.<lb /><lb />3<lb />E<lb />xR<lb />BY<lb />=<lb /><lb />Vil<lb /><lb />BEAMER<lb /><lb /> oIt's not always the most talented person<lb /><lb />or most talented team that wins, but it Ts<lb /><lb />usually the team that Ts closest together.<lb />What we've asked the university to do,<lb />| think we can be a leader in that. That Ts<lb />come together, be tighter together,<lb />care for each other more than ever...<lb />and that Ts exactly what this football<lb />team needs to do to make people proud. <lb /><lb /></p>

We want to<lb /><lb />use their talents in one-on-one .<lb /><lb />match-ups with linebackers and<lb />get all of them involved as much<lb />as possible. <lb /><lb />Someone who has flourished<lb />in such a role is senior Chris<lb />Johnson, who is listed as the<lb />Pirates T starting running back.<lb />The speedy Johnson had a team-<lb />best 972 all-purpose yards as<lb />a running back, wide receiver<lb />and kick returner last season.<lb /><lb /> oTl be arunning back mainly<lb />but we still have plays in the<lb /><lb />playbook where I can be moved |<lb /><lb />to a slot receiver, T Johnson said<lb />of his role in this year Ts offense.<lb /><lb />Johnson has displayed play-<lb />making ability throughout his<lb />career, including a 96-yard kick<lb /><lb /> T return last season and an 86-<lb /><lb />yard run against Wake Forest<lb />as a freshman, which ranks as<lb />the seventh longest run in ECU<lb />history and second longest by<lb />an ECU freshman.<lb /><lb />Without Pinkney and<lb />Allison, Johnson believes he<lb />can showcase his explosive-<lb />ness even more this season.<lb /><lb /> oT Tm looking to be more of a<lb />playmaker this year, but I made<lb />plays even when they [Pinkney<lb />and Allison] were here, said<lb />Johnson. oThere Ts really not<lb /><lb />Photo by Robin McLawhorn<lb /><lb />much pressure for me to step up "<lb /><lb />and be a playmaker because I Tve<lb />been doing it since my freshman<lb />year. <lb /><lb />Pinkney ended his career as<lb />ECU Ts all-time leader in com-<lb />pletions (687), career attempts<lb />(1,189), 200-yard passing games<lb />(23) and consecutive starts at<lb />quarterback (38).<lb /><lb /> Kass is taking over for<lb />Pinkney, and a better rushing<lb />attack could benefit the young<lb />quarterback.<lb /><lb /> oWe feel like the running<lb />game has to be better, said<lb />Johnson. oPinkney has been here<lb />for the last three or four years<lb />and this will the first season in<lb />awhile with a new quarterback,<lb />so we have to run the ball better<lb />to take some of the pressure off<lb />the quarterback. <lb /><lb />The big plays that usually<lb />came from the Pirates T quar-<lb />terback and wide receivers in<lb />years past could come more<lb />from the talented backfield<lb />that ECU will display this fall.<lb /><lb /> oWe need our running backs<lb />to make big plays so the offense<lb />isn Tt on the field for so long<lb />sometimes, we need some long<lb />runs where we can break a tackle<lb />and score that way, said Smith.<lb /><lb />Holtz believes that his past<lb />offenses have relied on Pinkney<lb />and Allison because of the lack<lb />of depth at certain positions.<lb /><lb />abe you look at this offense<lb />the past couple of years, it has<lb />relied very heavily on just a<lb />couple of players because we<lb />didn Tt have a lot of depth, he<lb />said. oWhen Aundrae [Alli-<lb />son] came here, we didn Tt have<lb />another player of his talent so<lb /><lb /> T we moved him all over the field<lb /><lb />and made him the primary<lb />target because we feel like we<lb />didn Tt have the quality depth.<lb /> oBut now after being in this<lb />program for three years, one of<lb />the most exciting things about<lb />this team and the biggest differ-<lb />ence in this football team than<lb />the one of three years ago is the<lb /><lb />depth that Ts here right now. <lb /><lb />With the inexperience at<lb />quarterback and wide receiver,<lb />the ECU rushing attack will<lb />have to be improved in 2007.<lb /><lb /> oFor us to achieve our goals<lb />of being a top-25 team, a confer-<lb />ence champion and return to a<lb />bowl game we're going to have<lb />to establish a consistent, domi-<lb />nant running game, said Smith.<lb /><lb />This. writer can be'contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />OPEN 24 Hours 7 Days a Week<lb /><lb />Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner<lb /><lb />|<lb /><lb />beverages and recieve a second entree or meal of<lb />' equal or lesser value FREE (max value Tof $10).<lb /><lb />| Valid MONDAY - FRIDAY _...<lb /><lb />| (excluding holidays)<lb />Offer Expires 12/31/07<lb /><lb /> Please present coupon when ordering. The three<lb />linebackers have played a fun-<lb />damental part in the resurgence<lb />of a tough, intimidating Pirates<lb />defense under third year defen-<lb />sive coordinator Greg Hudson.<lb /><lb />In 2003, ECU's rush defense<lb />was the laughing stock of C-USA.<lb />The defense gave up an appall-<lb />ing 221.6 yards per game on<lb />the ground. In only three short<lb />seasons, two under the tutelage<lb />of Hudson, the Pirates have scaled<lb />back over 75 rush yards per game,<lb />giving up 145.2 yards per game<lb />on the ground. With an emphasis<lb />on stopping the run, Hudson has<lb />gotten his defense back to the "<lb />fundamentals of tackling.<lb /><lb /> oThat's [stopping the run] our<lb />first priority, whether it Ts a great<lb />team like Virginia Tech or a team<lb />that is more ofa spread option offen-<lb />sive team, you have to stop the run<lb />first and ifyou don Tt their going to<lb />Just keep handing the ball off and<lb />laugh at you, remarked Hudson.<lb /><lb />The improvement can also<lb />be credited to the players on a<lb /><lb />cohesive defense led by standout<lb />defensive lineman Mark Robinson<lb />and middle linebacker Wilson.<lb /><lb />With the return of all three<lb />starting: linebackers in senior<lb />captain Wilson and juniors Bell<lb />and Cotton, ECU Ts rush defense is<lb />expected to be even better. While<lb /><lb /> the defense has made strides<lb /><lb />over the past few years, there is<lb />still room for improvement. The<lb />Pirates ranked sixth among C-<lb />USA teams in rushing defense<lb />in 2006, well behind first-ranked<lb />SMU (107.5 rush yards per game).<lb />' Wilson, 6-foot-2, 260 pounds,<lb />a former transfer from Georgia<lb />Military proved during his initial<lb />season in 2006 to be an aggressive,<lb />heady team player. Wilson credits<lb />this partially to his tough, demand-<lb />ing education at Georgia Military.<lb /> oAt Georgia Military they<lb />taught me a lot about being<lb />together.as one team, said Wilson.<lb /><lb />- oMy linebackers coach taught me<lb /><lb />a lot about helping each other, so<lb />that helped me with my discipline. <lb /><lb />As the middle linebacker,<lb />Wilson is expected to be the<lb />leader of the defense and mentor<lb />the younger players to help them<lb />become well adapted within the<lb />system. While Wilson is known as<lb />a soft-spoken individual, Hudson<lb />believes that his leadership qualities<lb />speak volumes to his teammates.<lb /><lb /> oFred is a lead-by-example<lb /><lb />guy. The best way to evaluate<lb /><lb />Fred Ts leadership is to watch him<lb />on Saturday, the Pirates T defen-<lb />sive coordinator said. oHe Ts an<lb />emotional player, he Ts not a real<lb />loud, vocal guy during the week<lb />but when he clears his throat<lb />everybody seems to stand still.<lb />He Ts an intimidating presence but<lb />he represents this university in<lb />great fashion...Fred Ts presence and<lb />emotion, especially on Saturdays,<lb />plays a huge role on this team. <lb /><lb />Wilson will also be relied on as<lb />the primary signal caller on defense<lb />after starting all 13 games last<lb />season at middle linebacker, tally-<lb />ing 39 solo and 25 assisted tackles.<lb /><lb /> oOn the defense, we're [line-<lb />backers] like the quarterback of<lb />an offense. Having me, [Quen-<lb />tin] Cotton and [Pierre] Bell<lb />back on defense gives the team<lb />good experience, said Wilson.<lb /> oWere trying to help the younger<lb />guys in the secondary and the<lb />veterans up front by running<lb />around and flying to the ball. <lb /><lb />Hudson, who played two years<lb />as a linebacker at Notre Dame<lb />and now coaches the linebacking<lb />corps can attest to the impor-<lb />tance of a good linebacking unit.<lb /><lb /> oTt Ts like baseball, you have to<lb />be strong up the middle and we feel<lb />the same way about our defense, our<lb />middle linebacker has to run and<lb />make plays, Hudson said, adding<lb />that he thinks the experience and<lb />camaraderie of the starting three<lb /><lb />linebackers will pay big dividends.<lb /> oThat linebacker core,<lb />they Tve worked together, they<lb />know where each other is going<lb />to be and the retention from<lb />last spring has been good. <lb />With Cotton, 6-foot-2, 220<lb />pounds and Bell, 6-foot-2, 231<lb />pounds, Wilson knows he has<lb />two strong teammates by his side<lb />to rely on. Cotton, a preseason<lb />second-team All-Conference USA<lb />performer according to Athlon<lb />Sports, has been stellar when<lb />healthy. In 2006, Cotton finished<lb />second on the team with 68 total<lb />tackles (34 solo, 34 assisted)<lb />despite missing two games<lb />due to injury (ankle, shoulder).<lb />Cotton has also. shown a knack<lb />for getting after the opposing<lb />quarterback and running backs,<lb />tallying a team-high eight tack-<lb />les for a loss of yardage in 2006<lb />(-17 yards). Cotton will play an<lb />important role in taking the load<lb />off a young secondary by put-<lb />ting pressure on quarterbacks.<lb />Similar to Cotton, Bell<lb />has had an injury plagued<lb />career, but when healthy has<lb />made quite an impact. Bell fin-<lb />ished third on the defense with<lb />66 total tackles. He is also a<lb />respected veteran that shares<lb />leadership duties with Wilson.<lb /> oPierre Bell is a guy that Ts<lb /><lb />see LINEBACKERS page B15<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Photo by Terrell-Gord<lb /><lb />Senior Middle linebacker Fred Wilson (51) gang-tackles redshirt freshman tailback<lb />Norman Whitley during the Purple-Gold game to limit a short gain.<lb /><lb />RUN FOR RESPIRATION WZMB 91 3 ECU s cal station<lb /><lb />8K/1MI FUN RUN<lb /><lb />RUN, WALK, OR VOLUNTEER FOR RESPIRATORY EDUCATION<lb />AND RESEARCH IN :<lb /><lb />EASTERN, NC<lb /><lb />SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2007 meee<lb /><lb />8:30AM IN FRONT OF OMEGA SPORTS IN GREENVILLE, NC _itivensry<lb />en ( BRODY<lb />"On ty Bealt0S SCHOOL of MEDICINE.<lb /><lb />COURSE:<lb />4.97-MILE FLAT COURSE THROUGH LYNNDALE NEIGHBORHOOD.<lb />8K COURSE IS USATF-CERTIFIED WITH A DRAGSTER-STYLE oSTOPLIGHT START! <lb />FOOD AND DRINK,<lb />AWARDS, AND HEALTH EXPO IN FRONT OF OMEGA SPORTS AFTERWARDS.<lb /><lb />DIVISIONS:<lb />MEN &amp; WOMEN AGES:<lb />, 16 AND UNDER, 17-19, 20-39, 30-39,<lb />40-49, 50-59, 60 AND OVER.<lb />TEAMS WELCOME.<lb /><lb />REGISTRATION FEES:<lb />8K: $20 THROUGH 9/22/2007,<lb />$25 THEREAFTER, INCLUDING<lb />ON RACE DAY<lb />FUN RUN: $10 THROUGH RACE DAY<lb /><lb />VOLUNTEER BY HELPING WITH PROMOTION, REGISTERING RUNNERS, AND MANNING THE<lb />COURSE.
