Committing scams against<lb />students has been no exception.<lb /><lb />An example of a scam is a<lb />Nigerian prince needing a little<lb />help from you to recover several<lb />million dollars that/belongs to him<lb />in exchange for a hefty return.<lb /><lb />One scam involving claims<lb />about IRS returns prompted the<lb />ECU Police Department to issue a<lb />statement to omake students, staff<lb />and faculty aware that there are<lb />numerous scams going on via e-<lb />mail and telephone, ? according to<lb />an ECU alert e-mail.<lb /><lb />Potential problems may come<lb />via phone calls, through the mail<lb />or the Internet.<lb /><lb />Some target students T personal<lb />information, while others may<lb /><lb />attempt to get students to give<lb />money.<lb /><lb />The Nigerian scam, also known<lb />as the 419 fraud because of the<lb />Nigerian law it violates, is an exam-<lb />ple of phishing, a scam technique<lb />in which the scammer poses as a<lb />legitimate business entity to gain<lb />access to personal information.<lb /><lb /> oNever give personal informa-<lb />tion to anybody, ? said Captain<lb />Beth Watkins of the ECU Police<lb />Department.<lb /><lb /> oA lot of people give it out,<lb />thinking they have to, but you have<lb />the right to ask questions. ?<lb /><lb />Incoming freshmen may be<lb />a main target for scammers this<lb />fall.<lb /><lb /> oThey'll try to hit up freshmen<lb />because they're new to campus, ?<lb />Watkins said.<lb /><lb />The statement sent out via<lb />e-mail advised anyone suspicious<lb />of a scam to report it to the police<lb />department as soon as possible.<lb /><lb />While searching the internet,<lb />multiple results could quickly<lb />appear that yield warnings about a<lb />slew of credit card, student loan and<lb /><lb />Contributed image<lb /><lb />Scammers commonly target students<lb />on the internet and through email.<lb /><lb />financial aid scams that could be<lb />easy to believe, especially for finan-<lb />cially-strapped college students.<lb /><lb />Scammers may try to pose<lb />as university employees .to help<lb />validate their claims; according to<lb />Watkins.<lb /><lb /> oThey might make up a name<lb />on campus to get the information, ?<lb />Watkins said.<lb /><lb />Project G.O.A.L<lb /><lb />offers brand-new<lb /><lb />opportunities to<lb />entrepreneurs<lb /><lb />Local businesses<lb />encouraged to improve -<lb /><lb />JAMI DAVIA<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />The ECU Department of<lb />Construction Management<lb />hosted Project G.O.A.L. <p>~ Opinion<lb /><lb />A heated debate:<lb /><lb />Partisanship in the global<lb />warming controversy<lb /><lb />JARED WOFFORD<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Conventional wisdom will tell<lb />you that in most social arenas, there<lb />are a few unfavorable topics that are<lb />best avoided in casual conversation.<lb />In our country, this list includes,<lb />but is not limited to, religion,<lb /><lb /> abortion, gay marriage, the war in<lb /><lb />Iraq and other such controversial<lb />subjects. Unless one desires to<lb />host a debate, it would behoove<lb />the friendly orator to evade such<lb />themes as they often inspire strong<lb />feelings which are not conducive to<lb />a brief discussion.<lb /><lb />This should not come as a huge<lb />surprise if one is mindful of our cur-<lb />rent political climate and the party<lb />line which stands like a yawning,<lb />impassible rift between the two<lb />sides of the political spectrum.<lb />Unfortunately for us Americans,<lb />the controversy concerning a rela-<lb />tively new debate has been wedged<lb /><lb />into this colossal space; thus has-.<lb /><lb />tening our descent into a tense and<lb />divisive domestic situation.<lb /><lb />*This new taboo subject is global<lb /> owarming.<lb /><lb />It makes sense why someone<lb />could feel strongly about things like<lb />abortion or war "a person Ts beliefs<lb />regarding these issues are often<lb />rooted in their spirituality or an<lb />essential set of personal values "<lb />but to have the same conviction<lb />in a debate over the existence or<lb />cause of a scientific phenomenon is<lb />absurd. By manipulating an already<lb />dismal] situation through politics<lb />and the media, we have effectively<lb />turned what should only be a quan-<lb />dary for people with white lab coats<lb />and clipboards into a catalyst for an<lb />international clash of interests.<lb /><lb />How and why should our politi-<lb />cal alignment influence. the way<lb />we observe and interpret scientific<lb />data? Typically, people on the left<lb />tend to acknowledge global warm-<lb />ing as a significant problem and<lb />cite humanity and its excessive<lb />pollution as a major contributor<lb />to the problem, while people from<lb />the right are often skeptical of such<lb />claims.<lb /><lb />In a survey conducted in Feb-<lb />ruary of 2007, 95 percent of the 41<lb />Congressional Democrats polled<lb />agreed that oit Ts been proven beyond<lb /><lb />a reasonable doubt that the Earth<lb />is warming because of man-made<lb />problems, ? while a mere 13 percent<lb />of the 31 Republican Congressmen<lb />in the survey agreed.<lb />Unfortunately, like most of the<lb />problems that plague humanity,<lb />the desire for money and power are<lb />indubitably involved in the growing<lb />global warming controversy.<lb />Many of the noteworthy skeptic<lb />groups have been criticized for their<lb />ties to large fossil fuel companies,<lb /><lb />. which would obviously suffer from<lb /><lb />a global shift to alternative eco-<lb />friendly fuels. According to a report<lb />by the Union of Concerned Scien-<lb />tists, ExxonMobil has paid almost<lb />$16 million between the years of<lb />1998 and 2005 to 43 groups who<lb />have provided information to the<lb />public regarding the irrelevance of<lb />climate change.<lb /><lb />Of course, a breach of ethics and<lb />an irresponsible manipulation of the<lb /><lb />scientific community exist on both ©<lb /><lb />sides of this issue. In an interview<lb />conducted last month, atmospheric<lb />scientist Reid Bryson stated that<lb /> othere is a lot of money to be made<lb />in this... If you want to be an eminent<lb />scientist you have to have a lot of<lb />grad students and a lot of grants... ?<lb /><lb />What we apparently fail to<lb />realize is that "liberal or con-<lb />servative "we all have to live on<lb />the same planet; it is mutually<lb />beneficial for us to figure out this<lb />momentous quagmire and to deal<lb />with it in the most effective manner<lb />possible. Leaving business and poli-<lb />tics out of it would certainly help.<lb />Americans do not need any more<lb />issues to further divide us down<lb />party lines, especially those which<lb />have nothing to do with politics or<lb />the platforms of any of the major<lb />political parties.<lb /><lb />It is my hope that we can one<lb />day set aside the interests of big<lb />businesses, lobbying groups and<lb />politicians in favor of concerns<lb />that are infinitely more urgent and<lb />significant. If we can find a way to<lb />achieve this and to cooperate a little<lb />more, it would contribute tremen-<lb />dously to the resolution of these<lb />problems which are rapidly mount-<lb />ing on the doorstep of tomorrow.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />{ www.theeastcarolinian.com }<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY JULY 25, 2007<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />PAGE 5<lb /><lb />| feel pretty awesome at my new job because people are impressed<lb />| graduated from: ECU School of Nursing...! knew it was hard for a reason!<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />SCLENTIS TS<lb /><lb />en<lb /><lb />SAY THAT WITH<lb /><lb />ENGINEERING AND<lb />MAINTENANCE, HUMANS<lb />ULD LIVE 1,000<lb /><lb /> "_ "_ "<lb />a<lb /><lb />WHAT A<lb />_/ NIGHTMARE... It Ts dual-sided, with one<lb />side resembling a phone and the<lb />other resembling an MP3 player.<lb />The phone side is limited with a<lb />tiny display, but it does cram in<lb />the date, time, signal strength,<lb />battery life and even photo caller<lb />ID. There Ts only one speaker on<lb />the side of the phone, which has a<lb />mediocre output "especially since<lb />it Ts turned away from you when<lb />youre looking at the screen. It is Bluetooth compatible<lb /><lb />an important factor in the leveling off<lb />of divorce rates in the U.S. and also<lb />attributed to a noticeable increase in<lb />education.<lb /><lb />For sophomore interior design<lb />major Meg Bianco, getting married<lb />in her teens did not nevatively affect<lb />her educational goals.<lb /><lb />New summer technology, like the iPhorie, is causing a stir among students.<lb /><lb />with a 1.3 megapixel camera and a<lb />video recorder.<lb /><lb />There are various media dimen-<lb />sions including Sprint Music store<lb />with streaming music from Sirius<lb /><lb />Many married college students are realizing that juggling both marital bliss and academics is a task.<lb /><lb /> oI am more focused and serious<lb />about doing well [since I got mar-<lb />ried ], ? said Bianco.<lb /><lb />Bianco feels that she T is success-<lb />fully balancing college life as a wife<lb />and as a student.<lb /><lb /> oT had the dorm and college living<lb />experience. The UpStage can accom-<lb />modate up to 2GB of memory.<lb /><lb />Another great feature is that<lb />the phone Ts case serves as a battery<lb />charger that doubles the life of the<lb />battery. It Ts full of drama,<lb />comedy and romance; it even<lb />has takes on social issues such as<lb />racial discrimination and accepting<lb />people who are different. With an<lb />outstanding mix of seasoned pros<lb />(John Travolta, Queen Latifah,<lb />Michelle Pfeiffer) and young ener-<lb />getic newcomers (Nikki Blonsky,<lb />Elijah Kelley, Zac Efron), the cast<lb />does an amazing job keeping you<lb />enthralled the whole way through.<lb /><lb /> There Ts never a dull moment and<lb /><lb />although there is a complete and<lb />satisfying ending, you can Tt help<lb />but want more of the Baltimore<lb />crew that you have become so<lb />attached to.<lb /><lb />Choreographed and directed<lb />by Adam Shankman, Hazrspray is<lb />an adaptation of the award win-<lb />ning musical, which was based<lb />on the 1988 John Waters movie.<lb />Tracy Turnblad (newcomer Nicky<lb />Blonsky), a Baltimore teen infatu-<lb />ated with dancing, wants nothing<lb /><lb />O'neill - Krew - Altamont - Reef - Rainbow Sandals - Adio - DC<lb /><lb />Mon - Sat 70am - 9p?"?<lb />Sun 7pm - 6p?"?<lb />(252) 327 - 4884<lb />Located in<lb />LaPromenade Shopping<lb /><lb />more than to be on the oCorny Col-<lb />lins Show, ? Baltimore Ts hot dance<lb />party. Unfortunately her pleasantly<lb />plump size isn Tt welcome in spite<lb />of her amazing dancing ability.<lb />However, Tracy isn Tt discouraged<lb />and wins a spot on the show by<lb />catching the attention of the host<lb />Corny Collins and one of the danc-<lb />ers, Link Larkin. Tracy is in love<lb />with Link, but he Ts dating Amber<lb />von Tussle, another dancer on the<lb />show whose mother is the station<lb />director. There Ts. an ongoing feud<lb />as the girls fight for Link Ts attention<lb />and the oMiss Teenage Hairspray ?<lb />crown.<lb /><lb />In school, Tracy is sent to deten-<lb />tion where she meets a number of<lb />African American students, many of<lb />which participate in oNegro Day T "<lb />the one day during the week where<lb />black kids are allowed to dance on<lb />the show, hosted by Motormouth<lb />Maybelle (Queen Latifah). As a<lb />result of their friendship, Tracy<lb />begins to fight, not only for her own<lb />inclusion, but for the integration<lb />of the black and white kids on the<lb />show as well.<lb /><lb />John Travolta Ts portrayal of<lb />Edna, Tracy Ts mom, is sincere if not<lb />totally convincing. This full-figured<lb />woman with a heavy Baltimore<lb /><lb />Quiksilver - Billabong - Volcom - Rusty - Ezekiel - Fox - Lost<lb /><lb />15% off<lb /><lb />One Regular Priced ltem.<lb /><lb />_® One coupon per customer<lb />| pires 08/5/07<lb /><lb />accent pulls you in; so even if make-<lb />up artists and costume designers<lb />couldn't get rid of Travolta Ts strong<lb />jaw line, we still grasp Edna Ts inse-<lb />curities as a woman and concern<lb />as a mother. Travolta Ts decision<lb />to make a genuine attempt to get<lb />into the character, as opposed to<lb /><lb />drawing attention to his portrayal.<lb /><lb />of a woman or attempting to play<lb />the role as it has been done before,<lb />allows the role to be taken seriously,<lb />and even makes the relationship<lb />between Edna and Wilbur Turnblad<lb />(Christopher Walken) believable.<lb /><lb />Amanda Bynes T role as Tracy's<lb />best friend Penny Pingleton is also<lb />interesting. Although she has a<lb />couple funny one-liners, she spends<lb />the majority of the movie staring at<lb />the camera sucking on a lollipop.<lb />However, Bynes character doesn Tt<lb />take away from the movie; in fact,<lb />her love interest in Seaweed (Elijah<lb />Kelly), one of the dancers who par-<lb />ticipates in oNegro Day, T adds to<lb />one of the stories main issues.<lb /><lb />A big plus is that there Ts noth-<lb />ing overdone about Hairspray.<lb />The choreography is sharp and<lb /><lb />fun, the music is electrifying and 2 |<lb /><lb />the diction is crisp and clean. But to some it is a good<lb />decision.<lb /><lb /> oT think that people can be in<lb />love and be married at any age as<lb />long as you Tre smart and mature<lb />enough to understand what comes<lb />along with marriage. It can be dif-<lb />ficult sometimes but being married<lb />has not affected my academic career<lb />in any way, T Bianco said.<lb /><lb />Marriage to some is unthink-<lb />able during the college years, but<lb />to others, it is the best decision they<lb />ever made.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />HAIRSPRAY continued from 7<lb /><lb />even if you're not a music lover the<lb />comedic storyline and interesting<lb />effects, such as singing billboards<lb />and pictures, gives this movie great<lb />appeal for a diverse audience. The NBA might not<lb />ever recover from this most recent<lb />scandal, especially for a league that Ts<lb />already struggling to stay relevant<lb />in the sporting landscape.<lb /><lb /> oThis is the most serious situ-<lb />ation, the worst situation that I Tve<lb />ever experienced, ? said NBA Com-<lb />missioner David Stern during a news<lb />conference Tuesday.<lb /> This scandal is new ground for<lb />corruption in American sports. This<lb />isthe first proven incident of corrupt<lb />officiating, at least that the public<lb />knows about. The legitimacy of the<lb />last two NBA titles is up in the air<lb />and the integrity of the game will be<lb />questioned now more than ever.<lb /><lb />This is by far the worst thing<lb />to happen, on or off the court, in<lb />the league Ts history. The NBA has<lb />what they considered to be a thor-<lb />ough evaluation system for referee<lb />performance. It involves reviewing<lb />tape of each game and determining<lb />whether every call or non-call is<lb />correct. Referees are graded on every<lb />call they make and good officials get<lb />more prominent regular season and<lb />playoff games. By the NBA Ts current<lb />system of evaluation, Donaghy was<lb />considered an above average official,<lb />which qualified him to officiate five<lb />games in this postseason, including<lb />Game 3 of the Western Conference<lb />Semifinals where foul trouble caused<lb />Phoenix star Amare Stoudemire to<lb />play less than half the game.<lb /><lb />Stern emphasized that to his<lb />knowledge Donaghy was a rogue<lb /><lb />referee acting alone and that this<lb />is not indicative of a larger trend in<lb />the league.<lb /><lb /> oOn the basis of my current<lb />understanding, this is an isolated<lb />incident, ? he said. He also assured<lb />the public that ifand when any other<lb />officials are implicated, he would let.<lb />the public know immediately.<lb /><lb />Donaghy is expected to turn<lb />himself in to authorities later this<lb />week. It has been reported that<lb />he has received death threats and<lb />threatening phone calls and that he<lb />plans to cooperate with authorities.<lb /><lb />The Mavericks and Suns are<lb />the two teams most impacted by the<lb />scandal. Mark Cuban Ts complaints<lb />about the officiating, which placed<lb />him in contentious relations with the<lb />league and cost him a small fortune<lb />in fines, now seem legitimate. Suns<lb />Coach Mike D TAntoni Ts public gripes<lb />after Game 3 against San, Antonio<lb />seem almost prophetic.<lb /><lb />It Ts hard to grasp that a league<lb />so obsessed with its image that it<lb />implemented a dress code for play-<lb />ers could have missed the bigger<lb />picture of fair play in the game. In<lb />hindsight, there were telltale signs in<lb />some games that Donaghy worked,<lb />like the New York vs. Miami game<lb />in February 2007. The Knicks, a 4<lb />% point favorite, shot 39 foul shots<lb />to the Heat Ts eight and New York<lb />won by six. Heat Coach Pat Riley<lb />and assistant Ron Rothstein both<lb />received technical fouls. Although<lb />only those daring enough to vio-<lb />late the express written consent of<lb />the NBA can know the extent of<lb />Donaghy Ts affect on the last two<lb />seasons of play, but the NBA owes<lb />it to fans to determine what could<lb />have and should have been.<lb /><lb />Until robotics advances to the<lb />point that homosapiens referees<lb />are unnecessary, human error will<lb />be a part of the game. For now, for<lb />better or worse, human manipula-<lb />tion will be suspected.<lb /><lb />aS<lb /><lb />-* must sign a lease.<lb />some restrictions may apply.<lb /><lb /> oWEDNESDAY, JULY 25, 2007<lb /><lb /></p>
