The purpose<lb />of the study is to discover how<lb />both the partner with MS and<lb />the partner without deal with the<lb />disease. In other words, it looks<lb />at how each perspective comes<lb />into play when it comes to dealing<lb />with the diagnosis of MS.<lb /><lb />The study will consist of an<lb />hour-long interview where each<lb />individual agrees to discuss<lb />their experience with MS. The<lb />research process is still being<lb />tweaked.<lb /><lb /> oOne of the goals for the proj-<lb />ect is to help us refine this inter-<lb />view to make sure we are asking<lb />the right questions and focusing<lb />on the key issues when it comes<lb />to understanding how couples<lb />cope with multiple sclerosis.<lb /><lb /> oRight now we are in the pilot<lb /><lb />phase "we are revising the inter- -<lb /><lb />view to make sure it is where it<lb />needs to be before we start the next<lb />phase of the research, ? said Director<lb />Mark White, associate professor.<lb /><lb />Requirements for the study are<lb />that couples must be in a committed<lb />relationship and that one member<lb />must have a specific diagnosis of<lb />MS. <p>Opinion<lb /><lb />Getting tipsy in<lb />Greenville<lb /><lb />Supporting independent business<lb /><lb />_ JARED WOFFORD<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />For better or worse, I have called Greenville my home. Since<lb />moving here as a freshman, I have seen people come and go, and<lb />have watched our town as it continually expanded, developed,<lb />and defined itself. In this short time, I have witnessed the grand<lb />openings and closeouts of many local businesses, restaurants and<lb />bars, several of which I frequented and enjoyed. One trend | have<lb />observed over the years is that while national chains continue<lb />to thrive, independent establishments that provide specialized<lb />goods or services are suffering. 5<lb /><lb />Unfortunately for the citizenry of Greenville, it is these types<lb />of places that bless our city with diversity, culture and a sense of<lb />local identity. One particular establishment, which has managed<lb />to survive where many small businesses cannot, does just that.<lb /><lb />Floating stoically like an island.in the intoxicating, chaotic<lb />tide that washes over much of Greenville Ts uptown district is<lb />Acasia Ts Tipsy Teapot and Parker-Kennybrook Bookstore. Nestled<lb />together on South Evans Street, the Teapot is an English-style<lb />tea room and a new and used bookstore, all under the same<lb />pressed-tin roof. Here, patrons can enjoy the extensive menu of<lb />tea, pastries, sandwiches, and more; as well as peruse through<lb />hundreds of books. Inside, you are certain to find people chatting,<lb />studying, reading, or working; and I almost always see someone<lb />I know (or someone | would very much like to know).<lb /><lb />My favorite aspect of this experience is the front window.<lb />The view consists of rainbow-colored umbrellas and trees that<lb />frame storefronts that are endowed with colorful striped awnings.<lb />Across the street, people window shop while tiny birds frantically<lb />bounce around to avoid them on their hunt for crumbs.<lb /><lb />One day, while reclining on one of the Teapot Ts over-sized red<lb />chairs, I had to pause for a moment to remember where I was. Then<lb />the thought occurred to me that this place that I was enjoying,<lb />while located in the center of town, looked nothing like the rest of<lb />Greenville; and that the mood it created was consistent with such.<lb />With only a few blocks separating my current position from the<lb />dilapidated bars, frat houses and chronic construction that I have<lb />grown so accustomed to, I somehow felt like I was worlds away.<lb /><lb />I began to wonder, is it because of this that I am so compelled<lb />to visit this place? While I do enjoy aspects of the Greenville<lb />experience, has my relationship to this town grown sour enough<lb />that I seek a means to escape it?<lb /><lb />Since I discovered the Tipsy Teapot two years ago, I have<lb />subscribed to the belief that it represents aspects of our fair city<lb />that are lacking. Community, art, culture, southern hospitality,<lb />productivity "all of these abstract, desirable qualities seem to<lb /><lb /> manifest themselves here. Combine all this with an inexhaustible<lb />source of yerba mate, and I have no choice but to claim the Tipsy<lb />Teapot as one of my favorite spots in Greenville. I urge all citizens<lb />of our city to visit this place, and others like it and to encourage<lb />and support businesses that promote such a unique and friendly<lb />experience. It is mutually beneficial for us to patronize such<lb /><lb />institutions and to keep small, independently-owned companies .<lb /><lb />around so that one day, places like this can define the Greenville<lb />spirit and not defy it.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />{ www.theeastcarolinian.com }<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY JULY 18, 2007<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />Why do people here stare so much?<lb /><lb />PAGE 4<lb /><lb />396 PER PACK TO<lb /><lb />LAWMAKERS To EAISE CIGARETTE TAXES FROM<lb /><lb />| eneamattinammmneni<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />$1.00 [ "<lb /><lb />we,<lb /><lb />I WAS Just<lb />ABOUT TO ASK<lb />You THE SAME<lb />THING /<lb /><lb />CE EE YO T1<lb /><lb />stays<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate ©<lb /><lb />Rants. Through<lb />Moore Ts excellent leadership and<lb />passion for art, the organiza-<lb />tion became a Works Project<lb />Administration (WPA) project.<lb /><lb /> oThe WPA was created as part<lb />of Franklin Roosevelt Ts New Deal<lb />and it was designed to keep artists<lb />employed throughout the great<lb />depression, ? said GMA Director<lb />David Shankweiler. When Con-<lb />gress terminated the WPA in 1943,<lb />the federal government granted a<lb />permanent loan of artworks to the<lb />organization. In 1955, the organi-<lb />zation merged with the East Caro-<lb /><lb />_ was the architect of this merger and -<lb /><lb />lina Arts Society. Dr. Lee Humber<lb /><lb />it was with his help that the current<lb />house that contains the museum<lb />was purchased in 1959.<lb /><lb />The museum formally opened<lb />in 1960 and attracted an amazing<lb />7,000 visitors in its first two weeks.<lb /><lb />Since then, under the leader-<lb />ship of former director Mary Pen-<lb />nington, the museum has achieved<lb />accreditation from the American<lb />Association of Museums. This feat<lb />is considered remarkable since<lb />only three percent of museums<lb />nationwide receive the honor.<lb /><lb />Shankweiler, who has directed<lb />the museum since 2006, has also done<lb />many things to better the museum<lb />both in and out of the community.<lb /><lb />One of these things is the<lb />expansion of the summer programs<lb />that the museum offers. There is<lb />a summer program for virtually<lb />every age group.<lb /><lb />MiniMasters, which is offered<lb />to four and a half to five-year-olds,<lb />teaches young children about art<lb />from different places, as well as<lb />the creation of different forms of<lb />simple art. _<lb /><lb />Sizzlin Summer Art Camp,<lb />which is offered to six to 10-year-<lb />olds, focuses on the teaching of<lb />international art and the advanced<lb />forms of subject-based.drawing.<lb /><lb />The third summer camp, Caro-<lb />lina Idol Musical Theatre, is offered<lb /><lb />see ART page 8<lb /><lb />S<lb />2<lb />=<lb />v<lb />re<lb />=<lb />gS<lb />8<lb />iS<lb />x<lb />Ra)<lb />BS!<lb />RS<lb />=<lb /><lb />Convenient drug of choice may cause addiction<lb /><lb />Coffee is a common caffeine source.<lb /><lb />SO}OY<lb /><lb />Are students hooked on<lb />caffeine?<lb /><lb />CAT POTTER "<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />After a late night of studying,<lb />many college students need a boost<lb />to make it through the next day.<lb /><lb />For junior English major Sarah<lb />Stebnicki, along with many other<lb />students, this boost comes in the<lb />form of caffeine, and is obtained by<lb />the consumption of coffee.<lb /><lb /> oT have at least two cups before<lb />I leave the house every morning, ?<lb />said Stebnicki. :<lb /><lb />Stebnicki has been drinking<lb />coffee regularly since she was 15.<lb /><lb />Often times, the occasional cup<lb />of coffee ta keep a student alert<lb />can turn into many, decreasing the<lb />effectiveness of the caffeine.<lb /><lb />For Stebnicki, a stint at one<lb />of Greenville Ts Starbucks coffee<lb />houses for several years fostered<lb />her reliance on caffeine to make it<lb /><lb />through the day.<lb /><lb /> oI was drinking espresso like "<lb /><lb />everyday and I got to the point<lb />where it didn Tt even effect me very<lb />much, ? Stebnicki said.<lb /><lb />The consumption of caffeine is<lb />not only limited to the population of<lb />college students. Researchers esti-<lb />mate that about 80 percent of the<lb />world Ts population consumes some<lb />form of caffeine on a daily basis.<lb /><lb />Though caffeine is obviously<lb /><lb />a staple in America Ts diet, medical<lb />research has yet to fully determine<lb />whether caffeine has positive or<lb />negative effects on one Ts health.<lb /><lb />A recent study at Duke Univer-<lb />sity Medical Center revealed that<lb />caffeine has an effect on the body that<lb />lasts all day and can increase stress<lb />in people who consume it daily.<lb /><lb />However, some people believe<lb />caffeine has little or no effect on them.<lb /><lb />Caroline Boyd, sophomore reha-<lb />bilitation studies major, claims that<lb />she does notneed caffeine to function.<lb /><lb /> oT drink coffee occasionally<lb />because [ like it--but I don Tt have<lb />a problem with it, ? Adalius Thomas,<lb />who recorded 11 sacks with the Baltimore<lb />Ravens last year, comes to the Patriots as<lb />a free agent and will fit in with an already<lb />stacked defensive front seven. His versatil-<lb />ity in pass rushing and coverage will blend<lb />well with Bill Belichick Ts defensive schemes.<lb />Randy Moss, the other bigname to landin<lb />New England, should look more like the<lb />receiver he was in Minnesota with Tom<lb />Brady throwing him the ball this year.<lb /><lb />2) San Diego Chargers- New<lb />head coach Norv Turner has inherited<lb />the most talented team in the league.<lb />The Chargers went 14-2 last season,<lb />and Turner will have some nice toys<lb /><lb />-to play with on both sides of the ball.<lb />LaDainian Tomlinson at halfback and<lb />Antonio Gates at tight end are the best<lb />players in the league at their respective<lb />positions, and QB Phillip Rivers should<lb />have an even better year in 2007 in<lb />Turner's offensive system. The Chargers<lb /><lb />~ finished in the top-10 in total defense<lb /><lb />in 2006, and boast the NFLs most<lb />intense pass rusher, Shawn Merriman.<lb />Merriman led the league in sacks last<lb />season despite missing four games for a<lb />banned-substance suspension.<lb /><lb />3) Indianapolis Colts-Some might<lb />expect the defending champion Colts to<lb />be ranked No. 1 in the preseason, but due<lb />to the big offseason moves by the rival<lb />Patriots, the overflow of talent in San<lb />Diego and the loss of some key starters<lb /><lb />from their already flimsy defense, they<lb />come in at No. 3. All-Pro quarterback<lb />Peyton Manning will again be teamed<lb />up with the league's best receiver tandem<lb />of Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne,<lb />who combined for 2,676 yards and 21<lb />touchdowns in 2006. The Colts also<lb />recently re-signed Dwight Freeney,<lb />who will keep the pressure on opposing<lb />team Ts quarterbacks in 2007.<lb /><lb />4) Baltimore Ravens- Led by the<lb />leagues topranked andmostfeared defense<lb />in 2006, the Ravens finished 2006 with an<lb />impressive 13-3 record. The defense is led<lb />by future hall offame linebacker Ray Lewis,<lb />who keeps his teammates playing with<lb />passion every time they take the field Pro<lb />Bowler Ts Ed Reed and Chris McAllister<lb />anchor the secondary that is known for<lb />picking off passes and finishing the play<lb />in the end zone. Steve McNair T arrival<lb />in 2006 gave Baltimore the confidence it<lb />needed to play well on both offense and<lb />defense. The Ravens also added running<lb />back Willis McGhee this offseason, to<lb />make up for the departure of Jamal Lewis.<lb /><lb />5) Chicago Bears- The NFCs best<lb />team has a very strong defense, but has an<lb />offense surrounded by question marks. If<lb />QB Rex Grossman can find some consis-<lb />tency in his play this season then expect<lb />the Bears to dominate the NFC again in<lb />2007. Olsen is a big,<lb />pass-catching tightend whocanbea young<lb />quarterback Ts best friend, and Hester has<lb />been moved to offense after a spectacular<lb />rookie season.<lb /><lb />6) Philadelphia Eagles- Donavan<lb />McNabb Ts health will play a huge role<lb />in how well this team performs in 2007.<lb />Last year, with McNabb injured and Jeff<lb />Garcia at the helm, the Eagles won the<lb />NFC East title and made it to the second<lb />round of the playoffs. This led many fanat-<lb />ical Philadelphia fans to call for McNabb Ts<lb />outs as starting OB. The fact is McNabb,<lb />before hisinjury, was playing as well as he<lb />ever had, putting together an MVP-like<lb />season. The Eagles let Garcia leave to<lb />explore free agency, but kept pressure on<lb />McNabb by drafting Houston quarter-<lb />back Kevin Kolb with their first pick in<lb />the 07 draft. The Eagles defenseis a well-<lb />rounded unit that is known for its attack-<lb />ing: style, blitzing from different angles<lb />to keep opposing offenses off balance.<lb /><lb />7) New Orleans Saints- Drew<lb />Brees T helped turn around the Saints<lb />organization in 2006. A perfect fit for<lb />coach Sean Peyton Ts schemes, Brees<lb />threw 26 touchdowns and quarterbacked<lb />the top offense in the NFL last year. Joe<lb />Horn, Marques Colston, Devery Hen-<lb />derson and ECU alum Terrance Copper<lb />performed well for Brees at receiver.<lb /><lb />Theexciting Reggie Bush also flour-<lb />ished as a receiver out of the backfield,<lb />posting an NFL record 88 receptions<lb />for 742 yards. The Saints aren't gong<lb />to sneak up on anybody this year, so<lb />we'll have to see how everyone's favorite<lb />underdogs are going to handle playing<lb />with a target on their back in 07.<lb /><lb />8) Dallas Cowboys- QB Tony<lb />Romo started out great after taking over<lb />forthe struggling Drew Bledsoe in week<lb />seven last season, but struggled near the<lb />end of the season.<lb /><lb />This season will be Romo Ts first<lb />as the unquestioned starter and he will<lb />be looking to his duo of receivers in<lb />the flamboyant Terrell Owens and the<lb />always-reliable Terry Glenn. Dallas has<lb />anew head coach in Wade Phillips, who<lb /><lb />was the defensive coordinator for the<lb />Chargers last season. Phillips brings a<lb />defensive scheme that will fit the Cowboys<lb />3-4: defense, which he ran to perfection in<lb />San Diego. Watch for DeMarcus Ware,<lb />the Cowboy's outside linebacker, to be<lb />used much in the way that Shawn Mer-<lb />riman was in San Diego.<lb /><lb />9) Carolina Panthers- The Good<lb />News: The Panthers basically have the<lb />same roster that many analysts picked to<lb />win the Super Bowl in 2006. The Bad<lb />News: The Panthers basically have the<lb />same roster that many analysts pick to<lb />win the Super Bowlin 2006, but finished<lb />8-8 and missed the playoffs. Injuries and<lb />the constant shuffling of players on the<lb />offensive line cost Carolina in 2006. All-<lb />Pro wide receiver Steve Smith missed<lb />the first three games of the season with<lb />a hamstring injury, and starting QB<lb />Jake Delhomme missed three key games<lb />toward the end of the season, and the<lb /><lb />offense lacked consistency during those.<lb /><lb />periods as a result. Carolina's defensive<lb /><lb />_ unit finished seventh in the league<lb /><lb />in total defense in 2006, and should<lb />improve this year with the return of Dan<lb />Morgan and Mike Rucker. The Panthers<lb />also released veteran wide receiver<lb />Keyshawn Johnson after drafting the<lb />talented Dwayne Jarrett out of USC,<lb />but the lack of a proven threat on the<lb />other side spells trouble for the Carolina<lb />offense, and will mean more double and<lb />triple teams for Smith.<lb /><lb />10) Denver Broncos- Rookie Jay<lb />Cutler played well after taking over as the<lb />starter in Week 12 last season, finishing<lb />the season with nine touchdowns and<lb />1,001 passing yards. During the offseason,<lb />Denver traded for cornerback Dre T Bly to<lb />play opposite pro bowler Champ Bailey<lb />and drafted Florida's pass: rusher Jarvis<lb />Moss to add to their talented defense.<lb />The team also added veteran running<lb /><lb />back Travis Henry to the offense. Henry .<lb /><lb />ran for over 1,200 yards for the Titans last<lb />year, and should thrive behind the Broncos<lb />offensive line that produces 1,000-yard<lb />rushers every year.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />activities and events.<lb /><lb />You must be at least 18 years of age.<lb /><lb />Part Time Field Coordinator<lb />One-on-One Marketing<lb /><lb />°U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Brands Inc. currently has part-time opportunities available from/<lb />around East Carolina University - Greenville area. :<lb /><lb />eYou will be responsible for promoting the Company's products in the area, will conduct adult<lb />consumer sampling and assist management in establishing and coordinating promotional<lb />We offer paid training, mileage reimbursement, flexible work hours and no experience is<lb /><lb />necessary. <lb />WEDNESDAY, JULY 18, 2007<lb /><lb />PIRATES continued from page 9<lb /><lb />chance to bond, learn each other Ts<lb />game and also compete, which is<lb />important. ?<lb /><lb />One of Stokes T three seniors,<lb />Taylor Gagnon, also feels the<lb />freshman class is very solid<lb />and will be able to make strong<lb />contributions this season.<lb /><lb /> oI think these new guys are<lb />going to help out a lot, ? said<lb />Gagnon. oWe've played some<lb />pick-up games together and they<lb />all looked very impressive..<lb /><lb /> oThey re all pretty big<lb />and strong, which is great for<lb />freshmen. Getting here early in<lb />_. the summer and working out and<lb /> ostuff will work out nicely come<lb />the fall. ?<lb /><lb />Gagnon, who grew up in<lb />Greenville and played high<lb />school ball at J.H. Rose, will<lb />be relied on for leadership this<lb />season.<lb /><lb />He understands his role will<lb /><lb />«be much different this year than<lb /><lb />in the past.<lb /> oIt is a little bit different<lb />of an outlook, ? he said. oThe<lb /><lb />past few years I have just.<lb /><lb />kind of been trying to help<lb />the team and do my job but<lb />this year I feel I have more<lb />of a responsibility being<lb /><lb />a ee<lb /><lb />a senior, primarily with<lb />leadership not only on the<lb />court, but also off. I want<lb />to be friendly to everybody,<lb />get everybody working hard<lb />and having the right attitude<lb />towards the game. ?<lb /><lb />Stokes and his staff have<lb />already begun recruiting<lb />for the 2008 class, and will<lb />get a minor break in August<lb />before preseason workouts<lb />and classes start this fall.<lb /><lb />This is a T very important<lb />séason for the pirates<lb />basketball program. After<lb />going a combined 14-44 over<lb />the past two seasons, students<lb />and fans are hoping for more<lb />wins and improvement.<lb /><lb /> oIT think we have to prove to ~<lb /><lb />people this year, that we are a<lb />hard working group of guys, ?<lb />said Gagnon. oWe do deserve<lb />to have a good year because<lb />we work hard for it. I think<lb />that Ts all we can do is continue<lb />to work hard and hope that<lb />things. will turn around for<lb />us, and I think they will if we<lb />stay confident. ?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />A : ee<lb /><lb />Your Choice of American, Swiss,<lb />or Pepper Jack ee<lb /><lb />(eT g-t-1a Vil (=m =1 Atco bel (Vol gex-t-wa ge) gaat a\-m @xe)(e) al =I Mall)<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />Mark A.
