She has<lb />a well-earned reputation for innovation,<lb />effectiveness and decisiveness, and I am<lb />delighted that she has accepted this new<lb /><lb />: assignment. <lb /><lb />Ballard said Sheerer Ts new position is part of a number of organi-<lb />zational and personnel changes designed to provide an enhanced<lb />student experience at ECU. oMarilyn has my complete confidence in<lb />her ability to carry out the changes that we need to make to move<lb />ECU forward, he said.<lb /><lb />The university will conduct a national search for a provost, begin-<lb />ning in the fall of 2008, and Sheerer is welcome to be a candidate,<lb />Ballard said.<lb /><lb />The chancellor said the university Ts onew directions emphasize<lb />integration, efficiency, the whole student, the concept of a leadership<lb />university, and new signature programs that speak to the core mis-<lb />sion of ECU. <lb /><lb /> oIt is time for ECU to speak boldly about where it is going and<lb />what it wants to accomplish, Ballard said. oWe must create vehicles<lb />and accountability measures to enhance quality, create change and<lb />respond to the needs of Eastern North Carolina. <lb /><lb />Ballard said the changes are in keeping with the university's stra-<lb />tegic initiatives as well as those of Erskine Bowles, president of the<lb />University of North Carolina system.<lb /><lb />Other changes announced by Ballard include:<lb /><lb />° The divisions of academic affairs and student life will be<lb />combined into a single unit under the supervision of the provost. A<lb />new position of vice provost for student life will be created to provide<lb />day-to-day oversight for functions in that area.<lb /><lb />° Dr. Judith I. This<lb />is a new position, and she will be charged with developing initiatives<lb />to attract, enroll and retain students at ECU, and she will oversee<lb />the offices of admissions, financial aid, registrar, and first-year center,<lb />which includes new-student orientation and advising and freshman<lb />seminars. Those operations were previously housed in the academic<lb />affairs division. Bailey, a former professor of education and a former<lb />provost, will not be a candidate for the permanent position, which will<lb />report to the chancellor.<lb /><lb />° Claudia McCann, director of institutional research and test-<lb />ing, has been appointed interim director of the office of institutional<lb />planning, research and effectiveness, which will move from the aca-<lb />demic affairs division to the chancellor Ts division.<lb /><lb />Sheerer joined ECU as a faculty member in 1996 and was named<lb />dean of education in 1998. Under her leadership, the College of Edu-<lb /><lb />_ cation won several national awards. She has been vice chancellor for<lb /><lb />student.life since last summer, and she has also served as interim vice<lb />chancellor for university advancement. As provost, she succeeds Dr.<lb />James LeRoy Smith, who announced this month that he will step down<lb />from the position to return to teaching.<lb /><lb />Sheerer said, oECU is a dynamic, exciting institution. I am fortu-<lb />nate to have the opportunity to work closely with our superb faculty<lb />and deans as we enter our second century. It is because of them that<lb />we will continue to be able to make such a difference for this region<lb />and this state. <lb /><lb />Sheerer holds a bachelor Ts degree from Bloomsburg State College<lb />in Pennsylvania, a master Ts in student personnel in higher education<lb />from Syracuse University, and a Ph.D. in curriculum and supervision<lb />from Ohio University. <lb />Opinion<lb />Do the light thing<lb /><lb />Changing a light bulb could decrease global warming<lb /><lb />(MCT)-Fluorescent light bulbs use 75 percent less energy than<lb />the familiar incandescent bulbs found in most living rooms. Fluores-<lb />cents also last up to 10 times longer than incandescents. And because<lb />they draw less juice from power plants, they indirectly contribute<lb />lower greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. A single fluo-<lb />rescent bulb can save about $30 in electrical and replacement costs<lb />over its multiyear lifetime _ assuming the dog doesn Tt knock over<lb />the lamp.<lb />So why hasn Tt everyone switched to fluorescents? Because they<lb />are ugly, they cast a harsh and unforgiving light, and they cost eight<lb />times as much up front.<lb />People who cae about global warming _ or about energy costs _<lb />are working to overcome those product shortfalls. The U.S. Depart-<lb />ment of Energy notes that if each American household replaced just<lb />one incandescent bulb with a fluorescent, we Td save enough energy<lb />to light 2.5 million homes for a year ee greenhouse gases<lb />equivalent to the emissions of 800,006 cars. Still, fluorescents rep-<lb />resent less than 6 percent of the light bulbs sold last year.<lb />A number of local and state governments have already made the<lb />change in their buildings. Taxpayers should appreciate the savings,<lb />and most people don Tt care if the lighting is harsh at the driver Ts<lb />license facilities, anyway. But how do you get individuals and com-<lb />panies to switch?<lb />You can send a oe brigade into homes to swap bulbs, as Fidel<lb />Castro did in Cuba. You can offer instant rebates to encourage shop-<lb />pers to buy fluorescents, as Maine Ts Public Utilities Commission has<lb />done. Or you can try to pass a law against incandescent bulbs and be<lb />done with it, California-style. The proposed How Many Legislators<lb />Does It Take to Change a Light Bulb Act (yes, that Ts its proper name)<lb />would ban incandescents in California by 2012. Australia already has<lb />adopted a similar measure.<lb />This seems heavy-handed and unnecessary, especially since the<lb />fluorescent bandwagonis starting to roll on its own. In Connecticut,<lb />_the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life celebrated Hanuk-<lb /><lb />kah _ the Festival of Lights _ by helping congregations convert to<lb />fluorescent. Countless green groups across the country are encourag-<lb />ing people to change their bulbs as well.<lb /><lb />So how many legislators does it take to change a light bulb? Zero<lb />_ unless you think only government mandates can motivate positive<lb />changes in our buying behavior.<lb /><lb />Education, encouragement and incentives will lead us to the light.<lb /><lb />Let Ts hope it Ts a little more flattering by the time we get there.<lb /><lb />{ www.theeastcarolinian.com }<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY JUNE 27, 2007<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />PAGE 6<lb /><lb />My friend named her Giga pet after me, and after a<lb />recent fight we had, it mysteriously T died. Over-<lb />used plots and terrible<lb />remakes plagued what<lb />was once an amaz-<lb />ing part of the film<lb />industry.<lb /><lb />Thankfully, this<lb />year has restored my<lb />faith in horror. The<lb />release of 1408 proved<lb />that Hollywood could<lb />still make a great<lb />horror film that didn Tt<lb />rely on cheap closet<lb />monsters or cheesy desert mutants<lb />for entertainment.<lb /><lb />1408, directed by Mikael Haf-<lb />strom and written by Matt Green-<lb />berg, is based on a short story<lb />written by Stephen King. The plot<lb />follows the often-used format of a<lb />person trapped in a haunted hotel.<lb />However, King takes the concept to<lb />a. whole new and terrifying level.<lb /><lb />Mike Enslin, played marvel-<lb /><lb />Contributed Image<lb /><lb />ously by John Cusack, is a horror<lb />writer who makes a living inking<lb />out embellished guides to haunted<lb />locations in America. The hotel is essentially a<lb />relic of the jazz age. This means not<lb />giving the same resume out for<lb />multiple jobs.<lb /><lb />A good resume should include<lb />an objective. The objective needs<lb />to have at least three of four<lb />things: a specific Job title, the<lb />industry one is interested in,<lb />what one plans to do and key<lb />tasks.<lb /><lb />Also included should be a<lb />capabilities profile. This is essen-<lb />tially a list of abilities that the<lb />potential employee possesses. To<lb />create this, a great resource is<lb />available online at online.onet-<lb />center.org. Here, one can find<lb />occupations they are interested<lb />in and review the typical respon-<lb />sibilities of those positions. By<lb />condensing these phrases into<lb />tasks, one can create a capabilities<lb />profile of possessed skills that<lb />would be valuable to the employer.<lb /><lb />Furthermore, all information<lb /><lb />classroom experience are one Ts<lb />greatest asset, education should<lb />be first; included would be a list<lb />of selected coursework. But if<lb />someone has experiences in the<lb />particular field, it needs to be<lb />positioned first. The resume can<lb />also include short examples of key<lb />accomplishments in classroom<lb />or work experience; let employ-<lb />ers see contributions to projects<lb />or problem-solving experiences.<lb /><lb />Don Tt include unnecessary<lb />information; unrelated work<lb />experience should be deleted or<lb />given little prominence. Only<lb /><lb />include the information if the<lb />gained skills would be valuable<lb />to the employer. Even in this<lb />case, one should include it after<lb />the more important information.<lb /><lb />Remember, aesthetics matter.<lb />A resume should be neat and easy<lb />to read. It Ts fun learning the<lb />skills and making new friends, bas-<lb />ketball is a fun sport so it Ts great. <lb />The camp ages range from 7-17<lb />and the campers meet Monday-<lb />Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., except on<lb />Friday, when camp concludes at noon.<lb />Stokes is impressed with how<lb />the camp has grown and improved<lb />over his three-year tenure.<lb /> oI like to see kids come back<lb />each year, he said. oYou get a<lb />chance to see how much they have<lb /><lb />learned.
