All of the events<lb />will be free and open to the public.<lb /><lb />A similar event, the Beta Gamma<lb />Sigma Distinguished Speaker Series,<lb />has been sponsored by the college of<lb />business since 1986. It brings one guest<lb />every year during the spring semester.<lb /><lb /> oIn general, speaker topics will<lb />be related to areas such as leadership,<lb />professional development, ethics and<lb />the role of business in modern society, ?<lb />Niswander said.<lb /><lb />The Cunanan Leadership Series is<lb />being funded by a donation of almost<lb />$300,000 from Steve and Ellen<lb />Cunanan and Johnson and Johnson.<lb /><lb />In addition to collaborating to ©<lb /><lb />make the donation to the college of<lb /><lb />business, Mr. Cunanan and Johnson<lb />and Johnson are affiliated in other ways<lb />as well. Mr. Cunanan is employed by<lb />Johnson and Johnson in Pennsylvania.<lb /><lb />The decision to donate money<lb />to ECU Ts College of Business rather<lb />than another university is in direct<lb />correlation with the fact that the<lb />Cunanan Ts are no strangers to the<lb />Pirate community.<lb /><lb />In 1988, Ellen received a degree in<lb />business while Steve graduated with a<lb />psychology degree in 1987.<lb /><lb />These leadership speakers will<lb />provide students with vital informa-<lb />tion and resources that will be impera-<lb />tive in the future.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Les islator S<lb />Cha<lb /><lb />- Week long agen<lb />: offered to youth<lb /><lb />NIA RICHARDSON<lb /><lb />: ECU is oe host-<lb />ing ie ai" a oe<lb /><lb />epee gives Fast-<lb />ern o oe students the<lb /><lb />by their eesoek: based on need,<lb />interest, citizenship, ability to<lb />acquire skills for personal devel-<lb />opment, interpersonal skills and<lb />academic development.<lb /><lb />Tw@ students a are chosen from<lb />each school to attend either the high -<lb />school session, which is currently<lb />running from June 19 to June 22, or<lb />the middle school session that will<lb /><lb />run from June 28 to June 29.<lb /><lb /> The program is geared primar-<lb /><lb />ily to students who are from the<lb /><lb />more rural areas of the state. <p>pinion<lb /><lb />Professional athletes held<lb />accountable for actions<lb /><lb />NFL Ts fashions a new conduct policy<lb /><lb />JOSEPH MURPHY<lb />STAFF WRITER<lb /><lb />This just in, young people with access to large amounts of money don Tt always<lb />make the best decisions. Recently Michael Vick, Adam oPacman ? Jones, members of<lb />the Cincinnati Bengals and Paris Hilton have learned that there are consequences<lb />for their actions just like. everybody else, despite their celebrity status and lavish<lb />wealth. Alex Rodriguez and Lindsay Lohan probably share mutual disdain for<lb />the paparazzi that follow their every move, and at their most disgraceful moment<lb />swoop in like buzzards to capture an image of it to sell to the highest bidder.<lb /><lb />Celebrities aside, the big NFL news this off-season has not been Terrell<lb />Owens Ts antics but instead new commissioner Roger Goodell Ts hard-line approach<lb />to dealing with players T off-field conduct. Titans defensive back and return man<lb /> oPacman ? Jones will watch this season from the comfort of his home or the friendly<lb />confines of his local strip club. Since Jones was drafted in 2005 he has been arrested<lb />five times and questioned by police ten times. His former West Virginia teammate<lb />and current Bengals receiver, Chris Henry, will sit out eight games for his lengthy<lb /><lb />__ rap sheet in the last three years that includes alcohol, drug and weapons charges,<lb /><lb />and an alleged sex crime still under investigation. Bears defensive lineman Tank<lb />Johnson will sit out for half the season, although that should be easier than his<lb />recent stint in prison for weapons charges.<lb /><lb />Goodell has yet to deal with Falcons quarterback Vick, the leagues highest paid<lb />player and most prominent national disgrace. Vick Ts off-field humiliation began in<lb />2008 with the oRon Mexico ? incident well known to many fans, especially those<lb />whose team has built their entire defense around containing Vick Ts often breath-<lb />taking scrambles. A woman sued Vick for infecting her with herpes and alleged<lb />that Vick knew ofhis condition because he used the alias oRon Mexico ? for testing<lb />and/or treatment. The suit was eventually settled out of court.<lb /><lb />Last season after a home loss to the Saints, Vick flicked off his own fans<lb />while leaving the field. In January, Vick was searched by security at the Miami<lb />International Airport for attempting to bring a water bottle with the fragrance<lb />of marijuana aboard a plane. Although no contraband was found in the water<lb />bottle or in Vick Ts possession, there was a storage compartment behind the label,<lb />supposedly used to store jewelry.<lb /><lb />However, these incidents and transgressions pale in comparison to the April<lb />discovery of more than five-dozen dogs bred for fighting on Vick Ts property in<lb />Surry County, Virginia. Police found the dogs while searching the property, then<lb />occupied by Vick Ts cousin, for narcotics. Since then, anonymous sources have given<lb />first hand accounts of Vick Ts status as a high roller in the gruesome underworld of<lb />illicit dog fighting. Vick has pled ignorance of his cousin Ts actions on his property<lb />despite reports to the contrary.<lb /><lb />Goodell is waiting until the separate state and federal investigations deter-<lb />mine what, if any, role Vick had in dog fighting before he decides the league's<lb /><lb />course of action. He could decide to suspend Vick regardless of whether he is .<lb /><lb />eventually indicted. Either way, the luster is gone from the superstar Ts image.<lb />Vick was once considered the torchbearer of a new revolution in quarterback<lb />play, but his accuracy and decision-making in throwing the ball, the most impor-<lb /><lb />tant part of playing quarterback, leaves much to be desired. It Ts doubtful that -<lb /><lb />he will ever again grace the cover of Madden or be featured in any ridiculous<lb />rollercoaster-themed Nike advertisements. If he does make it on the field this<lb />season, opposing fans T abuse will be relentless. Vick appears set to join Barry<lb />Bonds and Kobe Bryant as the most despised player in his league.<lb /><lb />For all the bad publicity that has troubled the NFL this off-season, it is a<lb />relief to recall that Peyton Manning, the league Ts most endearing and personable<lb />star, got his long awaited first Super Bowl title, cementing his place among the<lb />greatest quarterbacks of all time. It Ts too bad that the need to fill air time in the<lb />off season has drawn attention away from the game itself and the stars that do<lb />portray model behavior.<lb /><lb />Charles Barkley Ts oI'm not a role model ? commercial rings true now more than<lb />ever. He encouraged children to look up to those in their families and communities<lb />rather than the professional athletes on their television screens. The glitter has worn<lb />offon these modern gladiators, revealing broken people more human than hero.<lb /><lb />This writer can-be contacted at opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY JUNE 20, 2007<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />PAGE 5<lb /><lb />Is there any nice way to tell someone to please just<lb /><lb />go away and stop talking to you?<lb /><lb />{ www.theeastcarolinian.com }<lb /><lb />SCIENTISTS CALCULATE How MUCH MONEY IT COSTS To<lb /><lb />Buy HAPPINESS [TS<lb /><lb />WE Le, How<lb />MUCH PID YOY \ |<lb />COME LP yottH f<lb /><lb />BEFOFE WE<lb />TELL You, WE'D<lb />LIKE A $61,000<lb /><lb />eee 8<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate<lb />Rants. Oh, and try fitting a<lb />social life in the midst of all of that.<lb />Seem difficult, or even impossible?<lb />It Ts reality for a number of college<lb />students across the country<lb />According to statistics from<lb />the U.S. Department of Educa-<lb />tion, almost 30 percent of college<lb />students are parents. Though this<lb />number is significant, a common<lb /><lb />problem that student-parents face 5<lb />is dealing with people who judge =<lb /><lb />or look down on them.<lb /><lb />Howard Artis, an ECU sopho-<lb />more and proud parent, warns that<lb />people shouldn't be quick to judge.<lb /><lb /> oFor one, the term student-<lb />parent means that they are trying<lb />to do something with their life,<lb />and... [they] understand the<lb />responsibility of taking care of<lb /><lb />their child, ? said Artis. oIt Ts hard<lb />enough being a student or a parent<lb />alone...and then to be both at the<lb />same time, and to be judged! It Ts<lb />extremely stressful sometimes. ?<lb /><lb />Although ECU junior Quintin<lb />Mallette is not a parent, he can relate<lb /><lb />The struggle of being a student-parent is something that many ECU students do ona daily basis.<lb /><lb />to the struggles many student-par-<lb />ents face. His girlfriend, an ECU<lb />senior, has an 18-month-old daugh-<lb />ter. He says he appreciates what<lb />responsible student-parents deal<lb />with and the sacrifices they make.<lb /><lb /> oI think people that judge<lb /><lb />student-parents are people that<lb />are...scared by what they don Tt<lb />know. We want<lb />to make millions entertaining,<lb />inventing, or managing. Those of<lb />us who achieve monetary wealth<lb />will nevertheless need someone to<lb />handle that money. This is where a<lb />financial planner comes in.<lb /><lb />Like the name implies, a finan-<lb />cial planner deals with finances and<lb />plans dealing with spending one Ts<lb /><lb />money. Many financial planners 55<lb />deal with single clients while some = § __<lb />Financial planners help clientele with financial choices, such as retirement.<lb /><lb />deal with entire companies. Those<lb />who deal with single clients are<lb />Certified Financial Planners (CFP).<lb /><lb />Dr. Robert Prati, finance pro-<lb />fessor and CFP, says that a CFP is<lb />the best designation for financial<lb />advisors. oMost advisors are char-<lb />tered life underwriters but those<lb />with the CFP designation are best<lb /><lb />able to give financial advice, ? said<lb />Prati, oit is best to always ask any<lb />planner you go to which designa-<lb />tion they have. ?<lb /><lb />According to Dr. Samuel<lb />Eakins, another finance professor,<lb />there are over 60 different possible<lb /><lb />designations for planners, many<lb />individuals ending up with over 20<lb />different certifications. The CFP<lb />designation, given by the Board of<lb />Standards Incorporated, is awarded<lb />to those who pass the CFP exam.<lb />The CFP exam is a very rigorous<lb /><lb />exam that requires many long<lb />nights of vigorous studying.<lb /><lb />While possessing a finance<lb />degree is certainly a big help in<lb />regards to taking the exam, it is<lb />not required among CFP hopefuls.<lb />According to Prati, those who want<lb />to become CF Ps can get a degree in<lb />anything--be it economics, chemis-<lb />try or-English.<lb /><lb />After passing the test and gain-<lb />ing the designation, CFPs have<lb />two options when choosing where<lb />to work. Eakins says that CFPs<lb />can either choose to work with a<lb />major company such as Fidelity or<lb />Wachovia, or work independently.<lb />Those who work solo spend a<lb />majority of their first years build-<lb />ing a clientele. This entails making<lb />house calls, phone calls, and going<lb />out to various social gatherings in<lb />hopes of gaining new clients.<lb /><lb />Once a satisfactory clientele has<lb />been obtained, a financial planner<lb />spends the majority of their time<lb />tracking money markets, opening<lb /><lb />see FINANCE page 7<lb /><lb /></p>

Finding a daycare to fit<lb />around school and work schedules<lb />is a difficult task. Artis says that he<lb />doesn Tt know much about resources<lb />offered by ECU, but he relies on his<lb />family and friends to help him with<lb />his seven month old son, Josiah.<lb /><lb /> oI have a support system, or,<lb />a better phrase may be spoil<lb />system T, ? Artis said.<lb /><lb />Artis says that the main con-<lb />flict between being a student and a<lb />parent is time management.<lb /><lb /> oFrom a father Ts perspective<lb />I would say it Ts more difficult to<lb />show that you want to spend time<lb />and be there as much as possible.<lb />But me, personally, I try to see my<lb />son everyday which is definitely<lb />not the case with a lot of fathers. ?<lb /><lb />However, the dilemma of find-<lb />ing a good balance isn Tt isolated<lb />to fathers, or single parents; and<lb />with all student-parents a support<lb />system is an advantage.<lb /><lb /> oThe hardest thing with my<lb />girlfriend is balancing spending<lb />time with school and spending time<lb />with her family, ? said Mallette.<lb /><lb />Many ECU student-parents<lb />say they would like to see more<lb />information and resources avail-<lb />able to assist them. ECU could<lb />possibly benefit from following<lb /><lb />the example of some schools across<lb />the country that are beginning to<lb />make strides to accommodate and<lb />assist student parents.<lb /><lb />For example, starting a uni-<lb />versity-established student-parent<lb />support group or a parent-to-<lb />parent email network to share<lb />resources and advice on doctor Ts<lb />offices, playgroups, tutors and<lb />other topics would be beneficial for<lb />student-parents at ECU.<lb /><lb />However, one resource often<lb />put to use by student parents<lb />at ECU is the Community sec-<lb />tion on Onestop, which includes<lb />forums for students to share ideas<lb />and seek advice on numerous<lb />issues. Although it Ts informal,<lb />student parents often use this<lb />resource to search for babysitters,<lb />daycares, advice or to find other<lb />parents for play dates or general<lb />support. Although they carry<lb />a great load, student parents at<lb />ECU are managing to accomplish<lb />their goals.<lb /><lb /> oI think [student parents] are<lb />some of the biggest role models for<lb />the rest of the world, ? said Mal-<lb />lette. A lot of the pressures that we<lb />[students who are not parents ] deal<lb />with are trivial compared to the<lb />issues of someone who has to help<lb />influence and raise another life. ?<lb /><lb />Artis, along with numerous<lb />other student-parents, is taking the<lb />challenge of being a student and<lb />raising his child one day at a time.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />FINANCE continued from ee<lb /><lb />new investments, and meeting with<lb />clients to discuss financial matters.<lb />According to Keais Hought,<lb />financial plariner at AG Edwards,<lb />people in this profession often<lb />have long meetings with clients in<lb />order to make plans based on a cli-<lb />ent Ts goals, income, and expenses.<lb />Planners help clients reach their<lb />financial aspirations by making<lb />budgeting plans for events such as<lb />retirement, purchasing a home, and<lb />saving for college. Due to the mas-<lb />sive amount of financial respon-<lb />sibility that must be maintained,<lb />planners are paid generously by<lb />their clients. Financial planners<lb />have the ability to get a paycheck<lb />of up to six figures a year. Individu-<lb />als in this career can earn such a<lb />salary using various methods of<lb />billing for their services.<lb />According to Dr. Eakins, there<lb />are three ways a financial planner<lb />can be paid. Fee-only planners<lb />charge a set fee for making financial<lb />plans. Commission planners can be<lb />compared to salesmen, earning a<lb /><lb />commission based on the types of<lb />financial products they sell. The<lb />third type, management planners,<lb />charge a percentage of the money<lb />that a client entrusts to them.<lb /><lb /> oIt is the general consensus<lb />that commission and manage-<lb />ment planners receive the best<lb /><lb />compensation because there is<lb /><lb />virtually no limit to how much<lb />they can earn, ? says Eakins. The<lb />comfortable compensation is just<lb />one of the many reasons people<lb />are attracted to financial plan-<lb />ning as a Career.<lb /><lb />Dr. Prati, believes that the<lb />demand for financial planners is<lb />only expected to grow because of<lb />the number of baby boomers soon<lb />to retire.<lb /><lb /> oPeople are expected to handle<lb />retirement accounts now, ? said<lb />Eakins, oand as always they are<lb />going to need financial planners<lb />to help them. ?<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />features@theeastcarolnian.com.<lb /><lb /></p>

After losing the<lb />lead the previous day, posting<lb />a score of six strokes over par,<lb />Cabrera rebounded on Sunday<lb />with a 69. Playing with the lead,<lb />he pared the treacherous eigh-<lb />teenth hole and finished with<lb />a one shot lead, deflecting the<lb />pressure to the rest of the field.<lb />Jim Furyk, who last won the US<lb />Open in 2003, made a charge,<lb />scoring several consecutive bird-<lb />ies on the back nine but failed<lb />to match Cabrera Ts final score.<lb /><lb />Woods needed only a single<lb />birdie going into the last three<lb />holes to force a playoff but never<lb />put himself in a good position to<lb />make one. Cabrera thus earned<lb />his impressive win the hard way,<lb />fending-off charges from the<lb />number one and three players<lb />in the world, Woods and Furyk<lb />respectively. At the end of the day<lb />Angel Cabrera hoisted the trophy<lb />and became only the second<lb />Argentinean to win a professional<lb />golf major; Roberto De Vicenzo<lb />won a major over 40 years ago.<lb /><lb />As for Woods, by his own<lb />ridiculously high standards, he is<lb />in a slump. Woods has only won<lb />three tournaments in 2007 and<lb />has finished in second place in<lb />the last two majors he has played.<lb /><lb />Behind Cabrera by a single stroke<lb />on Sunday, Woods failed to make<lb />a run at the title. This led some<lb />critics to believe that maybe the<lb />distraction of playing on the first<lb />Father Ts Day since his dad passed<lb />on, or that his wife was a day away<lb />from giving birth was affecting<lb />his play. But the fact is, he has<lb />never won a major going into<lb />the final day when not leading<lb />thé field. No one has questioned .<lb />Woods T ability to fend off charges<lb />by players trying to-make runs<lb />at him when he leads, but some<lb />critics question his prowess in<lb />coming from behind to take<lb />charge of a tournament.<lb /><lb />Woods will have a chance to<lb />rebound and win his first major<lb />this year at the British Open in<lb />July. The tournament will be<lb />hosted at the Carnoustie Golf<lb />Course in Scotland and Woods,<lb />who is still the number one golfer<lb />in the world, will almost certainly<lb />be the favorite going in.<lb /><lb />One thing is for sure, Woods<lb />is never satisfied with a second<lb /><lb />_ place finish and he will be anx-<lb /><lb />iously waiting for another shot at<lb />a major win.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Brownlea br.
