Curtis said.<lb /> oThe second is La Nina or neutral<lb />conditions in the Pacific. ?<lb /><lb />La Nina is the cooling of the<lb />Pacific Ocean waters. The cooler<lb />Pacific waters are favorable for a<lb />more active Atlantic season.<lb /><lb />La Nina or average water tem-<lb />peratures in the Pacific, coupled with<lb />warmer conditions, make for greater<lb />odds in an increase in the number<lb />and strength of Atlantic storms,<lb />many of which will likely have a<lb />direct effect on North Carolina.<lb /><lb /> oOne in every three hurricanes<lb />to form will pass within 300 miles<lb />of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, ?<lb />said Philip Williams, chief meteo-<lb />rologist for WNCT-9.<lb /><lb />This statement underscores the<lb />fact that North Carolina is particu-<lb />larly vulnerable to hurricanes.<lb /><lb /> oNorth Carolina Ts geography is<lb /><lb />a prime reason we are a target for<lb />hurricanes. Our state juts out into<lb />the Atlantic Ocean, ? Williams said.<lb /><lb />Another factor that plays a role in<lb />sending hurricanes towards North<lb />Carolina is atmospheric conditions.<lb /><lb /> oThe Bermuda high pressure<lb />system provides a steering current<lb />for many storms to move around. It<lb />causes a lot of storms to approach<lb />Florida and then turn northward<lb />toward us, ? Williams said.<lb /><lb />Williams also explained that<lb />forecasts might not always be a<lb />perfect indicator of Just how bad a<lb />hurricane season will be.<lb /><lb /> oFor example, Hurricane<lb />Andrew. ..hit during a year, 1992, that<lb />had a below average number of storms,<lb />but it was one of the worst hurricanes<lb />of all time, ? Williams said.<lb /><lb />Though the effects cannot be<lb />predicted, the probability of hur-<lb />ricanes passing over parts of North<lb />Carolina is high this year.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />news@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />2 Blocks Behind Chancellor's House<lb /><lb />301 South Jarvis Street<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13, 2007<lb /><lb />MOYE eaiieccd from page 1<lb /><lb />tional by September-or October.<lb />The second floor of the center<lb />will serve as general internal medi-<lb />cine practice.<lb />The expansion is expected to<lb /><lb /> serve as useful to patients and stu-<lb /><lb />Contributed Image<lb /><lb />dents, as well as practicing physi-<lb />cians, according to Dr. Whatley.<lb /><lb /> oThere will be more educational<lb />programs focused here.<lb /><lb /> oWe have learners of all<lb />types "not just medical, but many<lb />members of the allied health fields<lb />as well. <p>He<lb /><lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />Recklessness<lb />television news<lb /><lb />Information or entertainment?<lb /><lb />JARED WOFFORD<lb />* OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Television is the most powerful medium in American society. By combin-<lb />ing entertainment, information and expression in an outrageously conve-<lb />nient way, it has eclipsed all other forms of media. It is the most accessible<lb />means of mass communication and it is more prevalent today than ever.<lb /><lb />Unfortunately, it is through television that Americans get the most of<lb />their news. If you've seen the news lately, this may be alarming. Think about<lb />this: the number of yearly subscriptions to the New York Times is exceeded<lb />by the number of viewers of oThe O TReilly Factor ? in a mere night.<lb /><lb />I was sitting on campus in between classes one day when I noticed a<lb />television news program on a set mounted to the wall. At the time, they<lb />were doing a segment on the war on terror, and they were reporting on<lb />some incident in Iraq. The television was muted, but I watched, hoping<lb />that the scrolling headlines typed in caps-lock, combined with the video<lb />footage, would allow me to © gain some insight into what appeared to be a<lb />dramatic event.<lb /><lb />After a few seconds, the image changed to one of a group of soldiers<lb />walking with flak vests and assault rifles through what looked like a battle-<lb />ground. The story was becoming more interesting, so I continued to watch<lb />until again, they switched to another video.<lb /><lb />This time there were lots of frantic people in a chaotic street scene-- and<lb />there was a car that was on fire. This was getting good!<lb /><lb />My curiosity aroused, I tried to wrap my mind around this chain of<lb />events when, once again, they switched to new footage of the incident.<lb />When did they get a tank?<lb /><lb />I watched it hastily roll over and through things for a few seconds<lb />before I began to realize that none of the video segments were actually<lb />related to any single event. The images I was eagerly lapping up seemed<lb />to be a highlight reel of disastrous events; the CNN News equivalent to<lb />Sportcenter Ts Top 10.<lb /><lb />I was reminded of a local news program I had witnessed a few months<lb />prior about bees.<lb /><lb />As you may be aware, the honey bees that help to pollinate many of<lb />our crops have drastically declined in number across the country. This was<lb />news to me at the time, and I stopped as I was walking by the television to<lb />learn more. As the anchor began to recite, I took notice of the image being<lb />displayed in the empty space next to his head.<lb /><lb />Framed by a blood-red sky was the silhouette of a mother holding the<lb />hand of her young daughter in some kind of desolate, post-apocalyptic scene.<lb />Next to them was a large honey bee flying away, and I could almost see his<lb />little insect tears. I don Tt know if it is even possible for bees to emote, but this<lb />one certainly seemed betrayed and frightened. The combination of empathy<lb />for this bee and fear of some imminent disaster striking mankind (specifically,<lb />young daughters of America) was enough to make my head spin.<lb /><lb />After laughing at the extremity of this picture (and at myself), I thought<lb />about how reckless news programs similar to this are. At the expense of<lb />accuracy and objectivity (two things I would want my news to have), they<lb />make everything sensational to attract viewers. Reporting with such disre-<lb />gard for these basic concepts in journalism is an irresponsible way to use an<lb />extraordinarily powerful tool.<lb /><lb />I am aware that these broadcasts are dependent on ratings and revenue,<lb />but I Tve lived in Greenville for four years "it is not a sensational place! I don Tt<lb />rely on local news to entertain me, just as I don Tt need to watch Entertain-<lb />ment Tonight to get my news. I would hope that most people would feel the<lb />same way.<lb /><lb />So what is the easiest solution to this problem? Don Tt watch either of<lb />them.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />{ www.theeastcarolinian.com }<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY JUNE 13, 2007<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />PAGE 5<lb /><lb />It Ts not that | don Tt want a boyfriend; | just don't want<lb /><lb />you as my boyfriend.<lb /><lb />McDONALOS TESTS | (TS BIGGEST BURGER YET |v |<lb /><lb />4,<lb /><lb />WHEN You orperep<lb />TAHIR NEw BIG GURGER,<lb />You SHOULOW'T Have SAID<lb /> SUPERSILE IT T!<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />oy ig<lb /><lb />May To Uy Mle<lb /><lb />fh Te! The Tribe<lb />groomed many current and former<lb />big league standouts.<lb /><lb />Notable players such as Albert<lb />Belle, Sean Casey, Bartolo Colon,<lb />Brian Giles, Manny Ramirez,<lb />C.C. Sabathia, Grady Sizemore,<lb />Jim Thome and Luis Gonzalez all<lb />played for Kinston.<lb /><lb />Kinston has appeared in the<lb />Carolina League Championship<lb />Series for three straight years. Last<lb />year, the Tribe swept the Frederick<lb />Keys in threé games, winning the<lb />Mills Cup for the second time in<lb />three years. They also won the<lb />Advanced Class A Team of the Year<lb />Award from both Minor League<lb />Baseball and Baseball America.<lb /><lb />Approaching the tall front gate<lb />of the stadium, fans enter to the<lb />sight of a large billboard with a<lb />huge picture of the team hoisting the<lb />championship trophy. The billboard<lb />reads: Grainger Stadium, Home of<lb />the Kinston Indians, 2006 Carolina<lb />League Champs. Hundreds of fans<lb />hustle trying to grab a hot dog and<lb />seat before the first pitch.<lb /><lb />Walking up the breezeway to<lb />the bleachers to take a seat, music<lb />plays on the loudspeakers as fans<lb />sing along. People of all ages make<lb />up the faces in. the bleachers; kids<lb />run around with giant foam hands<lb />on one arm and a box of popcorn<lb />in the other, little-leaguers stand<lb />along the first and third baseline<lb />seats pounding their gloves, wait-<lb />ing anxiously for a fly ball, par-<lb />ents sit and chat with one another<lb />and clap as the home team takes<lb />the field and older gentlemen sit<lb />together and discuss the team,<lb />who Ts hot and who Ts not and which<lb />of the Indian players is going to<lb />make it to the big show.<lb /><lb />The atmosphere in the stands<lb />is cozy and inviting, and there isn Tt<lb />a bad seat in the house. The large<lb />green overhang above the bleachers<lb />shades fans from the sun during<lb />day games and sets the mood with<lb />florescent lights at night.<lb /><lb />Along the sidelines there are<lb />more bleachers and a picnic area,<lb />where parents relax and kids play.<lb />The outfield wall is covered with<lb />signs from local businesses and<lb /><lb />UNIVERSITY PARK<lb /><lb />AMENITIES: Range, Refrigerator &amp; Dishwasher; Water &amp; Sewer<lb />included; ECU Bus Pick-Up; Central Heat &amp; AC; Energy Efficient;<lb />On-Site Management &amp; Maintenance; Pool; Washer &amp; Dryer<lb />Available; Pets Allowed, and deposit; Wireless internet available;<lb /><lb />~ GAPMA member.<lb /><lb />FLOORPLANS: 2 Bedroom, ] Bath or 2 Bedroom, 2 Bath From $525<lb /><lb />MUNI BATS ba =1\\|=9 Bie telar-tell(slalGrclalanlerslaarcli Reolpar<lb />NVA ANNA MIIN= ©) £0) 01-1 aul =\sKeve) anne cqlali-|(e[6lle(stelg=\=\anal |(=\arenexo)an)<lb /><lb />1110 East 107H St., GREENVILLE NC ¢ 252.752.8900<lb />OrricE Hours: M-F 8-5, Sar 10-2<lb /><lb />in straight away center waves the<lb />American flag, a tribute to the nation<lb />that has created this beloved game.<lb /><lb />In right field, the scoreboard<lb />lights up brightly, posting run<lb />after run in a six-run first inning,<lb />making the fans cheer loudly as<lb />the Indians dismantle the oppos-<lb />ing team Ts pitching. The offensive<lb />onslaught by Kinston doesn Tt waver,<lb />as it puts up four more runs in both<lb />the second and third innings.<lb /><lb />As the game continues, the<lb />competitive nature of the Kinston<lb />fans is still prevalent. Even when<lb />their team holds a double-digit<lb />lead, the fans jeer and yell at the<lb />umpire to call strikes and cheer<lb />wildly for each Indian hitter step-<lb />ping into the box.<lb /><lb />They don Tt want this night to<lb />end. The score continues to grow<lb />to a 21-6 lead but that isn Tt enough<lb />to quench the fan Ts thirst for the<lb />Pelicans T blood. The team from<lb /><lb />Myrtle Beach had abruptly ended<lb /><lb />Kinston Ts eight-game win streak<lb />rallying in the ninth inning for a 11-<lb />10 win the night before and tonight<lb />they are paying for their misdeeds.<lb /><lb />Despite the lop-sided score, the sta-<lb />dium was still half full in the ninth<lb />inning and the game ended with a<lb />standing ovation from the crowd,<lb />congratulating the Indians on their<lb />impressive display of firepower.<lb /><lb /> oWith no MLB franchise in the<lb />state, North Carolina is known<lb />for being mostly oaction-sports ?<lb />country. Most sports fans watch<lb />NFL Football or College Basketball<lb />and more recently, the NHL. Many<lb />people don Tt enjoy watching base-<lb />ball games. They say, oIt Ts boring ?.<lb />In some ways they may be right.<lb /><lb />You won't get the same atmo-<lb />sphere of watching the Panthers<lb />play the Falcons at. Bank of Amer-<lb />ica Stadium on Monday night or<lb />the excitement of a Duke-Caro-<lb />lina basketball game, but people<lb />don Tt come to watch Kinston<lb />Indian baseball for that.<lb /><lb />Being at the ballpark as a true<lb />fan is something special that not<lb />everyone experiences the same way.<lb />For the casual fan they will have a<lb />fun and entertaining time, but real<lb />baseball fans find their joy through<lb />the intricacies of the game. For<lb /><lb />them, keeping track of pitch counts<lb /><lb />. and averages, and understanding<lb /><lb />all the different situations is what<lb />makes the game exciting.<lb /><lb />For the people who have<lb />played the game, it is an even<lb />more meaningful experience.<lb />The smell of freshly cut grass,<lb />the crack of the bat and watching<lb />the players on the field reminds<lb />ex-players of the times when they<lb />stood out on the diamond and<lb />heard the cheers of the crowd,<lb />back when they used to be the<lb />one to make the plays, and that Ts<lb />a special feeling.<lb /><lb />If you live in eastern North Car-<lb />olina and are a true fan of the game,<lb />or if you are just a casual fan that<lb />is looking for a fun time during the<lb />lazy days of summer, then Grainger<lb />Stadium is the place to be.<lb /><lb />The Kinston Indians are a great<lb />franchise and they have created a<lb />special atmosphere and experience<lb />that casual fans and baseball purists<lb />alike can both enjoy.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />Buy a tie for Dad<lb /><lb />late mst= Wie 40% on ALL<lb /><lb />210 E. 5" St.<lb /><lb />252-758-8612<lb /><lb />Men Ts Oro} tal lately:<lb /><lb />(regular price only - 25% off sale items) -<lb /><lb />Happy Fathers Day!<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />MON-SAT 10-6 SUN 1-5<lb /><lb />atalog<lb />; onnection<lb /><lb />division of UE<lb /><lb /></p>

Sherrod, like<lb />Young, seems to be a prolific scorer,<lb />as he racked up 23.0 ppg his junior<lb />season and was the first member<lb />of the class to verbally commit.<lb /><lb /> oJontae is another athletic and<lb />versatile player that can score<lb />and play both guard positions, ?<lb />said Stokes in the statement.<lb /> oHe attended our team camp this<lb />summer and made a great impres-<lb />sion upon us.<lb /><lb />The third member of the 07<lb />class is 6-foot-5 Virginian wing<lb />Jamar Abrams. Abrams commit-<lb />ted to the Pirates despite receiving<lb />heavy interest from two mid-major<lb />schools close to his home, Richmond<lb />and Virginia Commonwealth. .<lb /><lb /> oJamar is a splendid shooter<lb />that gives us additional size in<lb />the backcourt, ? Stokes said in<lb />the statement. oHe is an athletic<lb />player that can play a variety<lb />of positions. He has the ability<lb />to go inside, but his shooting<lb />range is his biggest strength. ?<lb /><lb />Abrams averaged 14.7 ppg as a<lb />Junior and is the only member of the<lb />class coming from outside of NC.<lb /><lb />Last, but certainly not least,<lb />the Pirates signed 6-foot-6 for-<lb />ward Daquan Joyner. Joyner,<lb />who was the last member of this<lb />talented group to verbally commit,<lb />played his high school ball at<lb />Goldsboro where he piled up<lb />averages of 18.1 ppg and 12.2<lb />rpg during the 2005-06 season.<lb /><lb /> oDaquan is going to be a great<lb />addition to our frontcourt, ? said<lb />Stokes in the statement. oHe is<lb />an excellent rebounder that also<lb />has great shooting range. His<lb />overall athleticism is his great-<lb />est asset and we certainly look<lb />forward to him making valuable<lb />contributions to our program. ?<lb /><lb />Appalachian State, Delaware,<lb />South Carolina, UNC-Greensboro<lb />and Wake Forest were all other<lb />schools that showed strong interest<lb /><lb />in Joyner before he.gave Stokes his ,<lb /><lb />third and final in-state commit-<lb />ment for the 2007 class.<lb /><lb /> oOverall this class is very ver-<lb />satile and athletic which will help -<lb />greatly improve our program, ?<lb />said Stokes in the statement. oWe<lb />are delighted with the decision of<lb />each of these young men to attend<lb />East Carolina. Each player was a<lb />top priority for us and I know our<lb />fans will enjoy watching them play<lb />and getting to know them. ?<lb /><lb />The 2007-08 Pirates should<lb />contain a solid nucleus and be much<lb />improved, with Stokes having by<lb />far his most experienced team since<lb />arriving in Greenville. The team<lb />will consist of five freshmen, seven<lb />sophomores, two juniors and two<lb />seniors. The seven sophomores<lb />are Gabe Blair, James Dillard,<lb />Brandon Evans, John Fields, Justin<lb />Ramsey, Greyson Sargent. Chad<lb />Wynn, 6-foot-10, center, will be a<lb />redshirt freshman and Sam Hin-<lb />nant and Josh Sweeley are the two<lb />Juniors: Finally, Taylor Gagnon<lb />and Darrell Jenkins make up the<lb />senior class.<lb /><lb />Special Note: Stokes stated<lb />a week ago today that James<lb />Legan, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound<lb />guard, who spent his freshman<lb />and sophomore seasons play-<lb />ing at Lon Morris Junior Col-<lb />lege located in Jacksonville,<lb />Texas, recently signed a National<lb />Letter of Intent with the Pirates.<lb /><lb /> oWe are elated to have James<lb />Legan joining our program, ?<lb />said Stokes in a separate state-<lb />ment released by the Media Rela-<lb />tions Department. oHe is a very<lb />good shooter with exceptional<lb />range and the ability to finish<lb />in the paint. James will have<lb />a chance to come in and make<lb />an immediate contribution. ?<lb /><lb />Logan, who averaged 14.9 ppg<lb />and 4.5 rpg last season, will have<lb />two years of eligibility remaining.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb /></p>
