<lb />PAGE 2<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN * NEWS<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6, 2007<lb /><lb />Contributed image<lb /><lb />Dr. James LeRoy Smith, provost and<lb />vice chancellor for academic affairs at East<lb />Carolina University, has announced that he is<lb />stepping down from his administrative duties<lb />to return to teaching. :<lb /><lb /> olam honored to have been able to serve<lb />ECU as provost, but it is time to get back<lb />into the classroom, ? Smith said. oIhave<lb />always been proud of this university, and | am<lb />especially proud of what we achieved over the<lb />last four years. ?<lb /><lb />During that time, the university has<lb />been the fastest-growing campus in the<lb />University of North Carolina system. Smith<lb />has overseen the hiring of hundreds of faculty<lb />members and has appointed deans of three of<lb />theuniversity Ts colleges as well as the director<lb />of Academic Library Services. The university<lb />is awarding record numbers of degrees<lb /><lb />Smith plans to return to classroom<lb /><lb />and its retention and graduation rates are<lb />higher than those that would be predicted<lb />by the test scores of its incoming students.<lb />Smith, who joined ECU 38 years ago as a<lb />faculty member in the philosophy department,<lb />said his first love has always been the<lb />classroom. He continued to teach an ethics<lb />course while he served as the university's<lb />chief academic officer. He was named interim<lb />provost in September 2003 and was selected<lb />for the role after a national search in March<lb />2005. His resignation is effective June 30.<lb />Chancellor Steve Ballard praised Smith's<lb />work as vital to the success of ECU. oMy first<lb /><lb />~ three years here would have been much more<lb /><lb />difficult without Jim Smith's guidance, advice<lb />and assistance, ? Ballard said. oHis service to the<lb />university over the last 38 years is unexcelled.<lb />His knowledge of the institution is vast, and he<lb />commands the respect and admiration of untold<lb />numbers of current and former students, faculty<lb />members and administrators. ?<lb /><lb />In addition to his current role, Smith<lb />has served as chair of the Department of<lb />Philosophy; chair of the ECU Faculty Senate; .<lb />chair of the University of North Carolina<lb />Faculty Assembly, which represents faculty<lb />members system-wide; chair of the committee<lb />that led preparations for the university's<lb />reaccredidation in 1990-92: chair of two<lb />self-study committees preparing for NCAA<lb />certification. executive assistant to the<lb />chancellor; and assistant secretary to the ECU<lb />Board of Trustees.<lb /><lb />*For a Limited Time<lb /><lb />Greenville Blvd. (Across from the Colonial Mall)<lb /><lb />CEREMONY continued from page 1<lb /><lb />The ECU building will include<lb />research and educational facilities,<lb />which will house cardiovascular<lb />research labs, offices, outpatient<lb />treatment and educational centers,<lb />as well as a 375,000 square foot<lb />clinical facility to treat cardiovas-<lb />cular patients.<lb /><lb />The PMH building will include<lb />operating rooms, interventional<lb />labs and 120 patient beds.<lb /><lb />The ceremony was pre-<lb />sided over by Dr. W. <lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />Iraqi artist brings "<lb />war home<lb /><lb />Wafaa Bilal Ts oDomestic Tension ? project<lb /><lb />JARED WOFFORD<lb />OPINION WRITER<lb /><lb />Wafaa Bilal knows violence. On his turbulent path to the United States,<lb />he has been arrested by Saddam Hussein's secret police, spent years in<lb />a Saudi refugee camp and has narrowly averted execution. In 2005 his<lb />brother was killed by American military forces in Iraq; and in his grief,<lb />Bilal Ts father died two months later after refusing to eat.<lb /><lb />Wafaa is being shot right now.<lb /><lb />As I am writing this, the-Iraqi-born artist is sitting in a gallery in<lb />Chicago as part of his current project oDomestic Tension. ? For 30 days<lb />he has lived in this gallery, where he has set up a webcam and paintball<lb />gun such that Internet users can aim the gun at him and decide whether<lb />to shoot or not. Tonight he is celebrating the last few hours he must<lb /><lb />spend here, and after ducking to avoid gunfire, he raises his glass to ~<lb /><lb />make a toast.<lb /><lb /> oCheers. ?<lb /><lb />After visiting this Web site several times, I finally catch Wafaa sit-<lb />ting at the computer, engaging visitors on the site Ts chat room. I use this<lb />opportunity to congratulate him and to tell him that I admire his work.<lb /><lb />I thought he might find it interesting to know that at that moment I<lb />was actually writing an article about him and his project-- to which he<lb />responds, in a startling gesture, by volunteering his phone number and<lb />inviting me to call him. Astonished, I dial the number he has given me and<lb />watch as he gets up from his computer desk and walks off the screen.<lb /><lb /> oHello? ?<lb /><lb />Ill-prepared and fumbling for a pen, I introduce myself and clumsily<lb />mispronounce his name. Not knowing how long I might have to speak with<lb />him, I ask the broadest question I can muster, in the hopes of securing the<lb />most substantial and applicable response. I ask what he has come away<lb />with from this experience and before any silence can frame his answer,<lb />he replies, his voice curiously placid.<lb /><lb />Wafaa Bilal--after being shot at more than 70,000 times-- then began<lb />to praise human kindness. :<lb /><lb />The man had spent a month, in seclusion, suffering from paintball<lb />wounds, sleep deprivation and egregious stress "and then began to praise<lb />human kindness.<lb /><lb />In explanation, Wafaa told me about how he had received the blessings<lb />of so many people through the chat room on his Web site. He said that he<lb />had lived on their good energy while processing the bad energy which, to<lb />me, seemed to deluge him constantly. He proceeded to talk to me about<lb />the layers that cover human life; layers like our culture, our experiences,<lb />our religion and their tendencies to separate and polarize people.<lb /><lb />Perhaps the most profound part of our conversation was a story he<lb />related about one particularly hostile man from Ohio who had fired over<lb />2000 rounds at him. After quite some time Wafaa grew hungry and<lb />attempted to eat, but conditions of the man Ts incessant attacks proved<lb /><lb />unbearable. Knowing that his only hope was through talking to his<lb />~ assailant, he told the man that the paint was getting into his soup and<lb />simply asked him to stop.<lb /><lb />The man obliged.<lb /><lb />All Wafaa had to do was ask. A more poignant allegory of the inhu-<lb />mane, impersonal nature of war couldn't be written. After saying goodbye<lb />to this extraordinarily amicable and lucid man, I couldn't help but silently<lb />muse to myself. Perhaps if our politicians, military leaders, businessmen<lb />and communities around the world could communicate just a little more;<lb />we might all be able to enjoy our soup.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at opinion@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY JUNE 6, 2007<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />PAGE 5<lb /><lb />My friend sprays her dog with febreze...I Tm sorry<lb />but that does not qualify as giving it a bath.<lb /><lb />{ www.theeastcarolinian.com }<lb /><lb />NEWS (TEM: MAN STOLE 1,500 PAIRS OF<lb /><lb />SHOES<lb /><lb /> "<lb /><lb />1k { tL 4<lb /><lb />TT et<lb /><lb />Eee<lb /> 4<lb />of}<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />a aes<lb />ee aga<lb /><lb />a ee<lb /><lb />oes<lb />SS pe<lb />TED eNle fa}<lb /><lb />The East Carolinian does not endorse statements made in Pirate<lb />Rants. ESPN praised the<lb />program Ts recruiting class .as one<lb />of the Top 40 in NCAA Divison I<lb />football for the 2007 season, second<lb />in the state only to Butch Davis T<lb />Tar Heels.<lb /><lb />Despite already having a dis-<lb />tinguished incoming class this<lb />season; ECU has received verbal<lb />commitments from several recruits<lb />expected to join the team in 2008.<lb /><lb />Marquan Brown of Gray Ts<lb />Creek High School is a speedy tail-<lb />back with a 4.3 40-time that could<lb />become a threat to take it to the _<lb />house any time he touches the ball.<lb /><lb />As a junior, Brown amassed<lb />some impressive statistics, rifshing<lb />for 1,500 yards and 17 touchdowns,<lb />averaging a staggering 12.7 yards<lb />per carry. He also had 20 recep-<lb />tions for 631 yards and 5 touch-<lb />downs (31.6 yards per reception).<lb /><lb />Brown hits the hole with author-<lb />ity, measuring only 5 foot 9 inches<lb />and weighing in at 160 pounds, he<lb />shows the ability to beat defend-<lb />ers to the edge. His head coach at<lb />Gray Ts Creek has been quoted as<lb />saying that he believes Brown is<lb />the best junior in the state. He was<lb />also being recruited by N.C. State,<lb />UNC, and the USC Gamecocks<lb />before verbally committing to ECU.<lb /><lb />Darius Spencer of AC Reyn-<lb />olds High School is another early<lb />commitment for the Pirates. As a<lb />junior, Spencer ran for 1,200 yards<lb />and 18 touchdowns. Spencer, 6-foot,<lb />174 pounds, doesn Tt look to have the<lb />blinding speed T of Brown but he<lb />shows good vision, following his<lb />blockers and taking-on defenders to<lb />get extra yards at the end of runs.<lb />He also looks to be a threat in the<lb />return game on punts and kickoffs.<lb />Spencer was also being recruited<lb />by UNC and State along with the<lb />University of Tennessee.<lb /><lb />see FOOTBALL page 11<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts disappointing to get that<lb />close, and have it slip away, ? said<lb />ECU coach Billy Godwin after the<lb />devastating loss. oWe came in here<lb />and we didn Tt back down; I was very<lb />proud of our effort and we Tll hold our<lb />heads high. ?<lb /><lb />In-between the Cavasinni walk<lb />and Ackley single, Seth Williams<lb />walked, Garrett Gore recorded a<lb />sacrifice bunt, Cavasinni scored on<lb />a wild pitch, Reid Fronk knocked<lb />a RBI single and Tim Fedroff<lb />singled.<lb /><lb />Fronk scored the winning run,<lb />sliding headfirst into home plate<lb />and igniting a ruckus celebration<lb />that ended with Fronk having to be<lb />sent to the hospital for five stitches<lb />in his head.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts a tough loss, I Td rather lose<lb />by 10 then lose by one, ? said ECU<lb />freshman Kyle Roller, who gave the<lb /><lb />Pirates a 9-8 lead with a solo home:<lb /><lb />run in the eighth. oThat Ts just the<lb />way baseball is sometimes, it Ts a<lb />crazy game. ?<lb /><lb />ECU closer Shane Mathews<lb />entered the game in the bottom of<lb />the ninth inning with 14 saves, but<lb /><lb />he allowed three hits, two walks<lb />and three runs in his last outing of<lb />the season.<lb /><lb /> oIt definitely wasn Tt the atmo-<lb />sphere or anything, I Just didn Tt have<lb />it, T Mathews said.<lb /><lb />ECU had leads of 5-1, 7-5 and<lb />10-8 in the game, but ie a ates<lb />couldn't hold on for the win.
