<lb />Opinion<lb /><lb />It's summertime, and<lb />the living is easy<lb /><lb />Get creative in finding ways to shake the monotony<lb /><lb />GREG KATSKI<lb />SPORTS EDITOR<lb /><lb />For those of you like me who are taking classes for the first summer<lb />session, life can get downright boring in Greenville during the dog days<lb />of summer. The good news is that there are options around the area for<lb />enthusiasts of all kinds.<lb /><lb />If you're a beach bum like me, Atlantic Beach is an easy hour and a<lb />half drive from Greenville. Some friends and | made the short trip to<lb />Atlantic Beach this past weekend, but if you work on a tight schedule on<lb />the weekends, a day trip is also reasonable. One thing that does hamper<lb />a road trip like this are the egregious gas prices, so make sure you bring<lb />as many friends as you can squeeze in to the ride to chip in on the fuel<lb />expenses. Anyways, I Tve always believed in the ideal, the more friends the<lb />better. If you don Tt share this belief make sure you take a small car, and<lb />not a gas guzzling truck or SUV.<lb /><lb />For anyone who is strapped for cash and doesn Tt mind roughing it in<lb />the wilderness, there are an abundance of campgrounds around eastern<lb />North Carolina. On our road trip to Atlantic Beach, my friends and I<lb />stopped in New Bern for the night to camp out on the Neuse River. We<lb />stayed at a free campsite in the Croatan National Park in New Bern. The<lb />campground was ideal for any enthusiasts and featured designated camp-<lb />grounds for different parties. Each site featured two bonfire pits with an<lb />attached grill, and two picnic benches. There was even a walkway leading<lb />down to a beach area on the Neuse River that people were camping on. I<lb />don Tt recommend pitching a tent on the beach of the Neuse River as high<lb />tide to damper your tent and your morning.<lb /><lb />Another hidden gem of New Bern that can be reached in less than an<lb />hour from Greenville is the infamous oGreen Springs ?. I Tm sure many of<lb />you have heard of the place, or maybe even paid a visit, but if not oGreen<lb />Springs ? is best described as a five-story playground for the kid dwell-<lb />ing in everyone. Although not the safest structure in the world, oGreen<lb />Springs ? is a lost gem in the structured, politically correct society we live<lb />in where everyone else is accountable. Admission to oGreen Springs ? is<lb />free of charge and everyone who visits the giant playground in the water<lb />is accountable for their own actions. Although careless kids have indeed<lb />been injured at the playground, amazingly no one has sued the owner of<lb />the property or at least tried to. This is a good thing, as a few bad apples<lb />don Tt ruin the experience for everyone else. While there I jumped off a<lb />four-story platform into the Neuse River and took a zip line from the<lb />third story and plummeted into the water. Other braver than me jumped<lb />off of the fifth story, and one wild soul even did a double front flip off of<lb />the top story, landing it perfectly.<lb /><lb />Atlantic Beach is not the only nearby beach where a good time can<lb />be had. If you are willing to add an extra hour on to your drive, you can<lb />find a bevy of things to do in the Outer Banks. I Tm a sucker for climbing<lb />Jockey Ts Ridge and rolling down it in a ball of sand. If eating sand is not<lb />something you had in mind, you can go shopping in Corolla, check out<lb />the pier in Kill Devil Hills, or even go camping right on the beach.<lb /><lb />For some fun had close to Greenville, you can drive out to olittle ?<lb />Washington and go fishing on the river. If you have a wakeboard or water<lb />skis you can hit the wakes all day. And if you have no way of getting out<lb />of Greenville you can fish or take a boat out on the Tar River. Although<lb />I am not one willing to jump in the river, many people go wakeboarding<lb />on it.<lb /><lb />This brings me back to the point that next time you are sitting at<lb />home after you get out of class don Tt say, oGreenville is so boring, what<lb />am I going to do the rest of the day? ? Instead, get off the couch and do<lb />something about it because there are plenty of ways to have fun right<lb />outside the city limits.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at opinion@theeastcarolinian.com.<lb /><lb />{ www.theeastcarolinian.com }<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY MAY 30,2007, PAGE 5<lb /><lb />RANT OF THE DAY<lb /><lb />My professor needs to wax his eyebrows. <lb />PAGE 12<lb /><lb />THE EAST CAROLINIAN ¢ SPORTS<lb /><lb />WEDNESDAY, MAY 30, 2007<lb /><lb />PIRATES continued from page 9<lb /><lb />Hunt had completely shut<lb />down the Pirates T offense prior to<lb />Eldridge Ts at-bat, allowing only two<lb />hits in 6 2/3 innings.<lb /><lb /> oWe were struggling offensively<lb />all night; it was rough only having<lb />one hit going into the seventh<lb />inning, ? said Eldridge. oA couple of<lb />guys got on base, and it was great<lb />to come up to the plate in a situation<lb />like that and come through.<lb /><lb /> oT had failed the other three<lb />times and I finally got a pitch that<lb />I could do something with, not to<lb />take anything away from Shooter<lb />Hunt though, he Ts one of the better<lb />pitchers in this conference. ?<lb /><lb />After two emotional wins, it<lb />seemed as if ECU was destined for<lb />aconference title. The Pirates won a<lb />Saturday rematch with Tulane 9-4,<lb />eliminating the Green Wave and set-<lb />ting up a championship showdown<lb />-with top-seeded Rice.<lb /><lb />The Pirates T good fortune ran dry<lb />in the championship game however,<lb />as Rice handed ECU it Ts first loss of<lb />the tournament in a 16-8 slugfest.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts certainly disappointing to be<lb />on the short end of the stick, but we<lb />lost toa very good club, ? said Godwin.<lb /><lb />Rice, which is ranked second in<lb />the nation, put ECU behind early,<lb />scoring eight runs in the second<lb />inning and building a 9-4 lead that<lb /><lb />it would never surrender.<lb /><lb />The Pirates didn Tt go down<lb />without a fight, as ECU would cut<lb />the lead to 9-8 in the fifth inning.<lb />The Owls were too much to handle<lb />though, as they scored the final six<lb />runs of the game after ECU showed<lb />signs of a comeback.<lb /><lb /> oI was very proud of the way<lb />our guys battled back, ? Godwin<lb />said. oI thought we could Tve cashed<lb />in after giving up eight runs in the<lb />second and down 9-4...I couldn't<lb />be any more proud of our group to<lb />battle back and pull it to 9-8, it just<lb />wasn Tt in the cards and that was a<lb />very good club that was across the<lb />dugout from us. ?<lb /><lb />Rice has now won every pos-<lb />sible championship since joining<lb />the league prior to last season. The<lb />national powerhouse won last year Ts<lb />regular season and postseason<lb />C-USA championships, and accom-<lb />plished the same feat this season.<lb /><lb />Despite the loss in the champi-<lb />onship game, ECU will be return-<lb />ing to the NCAA Tournament after<lb />missing out last year. Wallace got oposterized, ?<lb />abruptly shifting momentum to<lb />the Cavaliers. James made several<lb />other big shots down the stretch in<lb />Game 3, netting the biggest clutch<lb />shot in his young career; a mid-<lb />range jump shot to give his team<lb />a four-point lead with 20 seconds<lb />left in the game.<lb /><lb />This was the type of per-<lb />formance that people have been<lb />expecting from James, who has<lb />been compared to the legendary<lb />Michael Jordan, since he entered<lb />the league. Like James, Jordan also<lb />had to battle some tough Piston<lb />teams early in his career before<lb />making it to the NBA Champion-<lb />ship.<lb /><lb />Deron Williams has been one<lb />of the biggest surprises in the<lb />playoffs. Williams is averaging 30<lb />points and 8.5 assists per game in<lb />the Western Conference Finals.<lb /><lb />on all food<lb /><lb />LUNCH -DINNER-LATE-NIGHT<lb /><lb />301 South Jarvis Street<lb /><lb />2 Blocks Behind Chancellor's House<lb /><lb />ENJOY OUR OUTDOOR PATIO<lb /><lb />Picked third in the 2005 NBA<lb />Draft by the Utah Jazz, he has been<lb />expected to be the heir-apparent<lb />to John Stockton. Not known as<lb />a natural scorer like James, Wil-<lb />liams averaged 16 points and nine<lb />assists during the regular season<lb />and was known around the league<lb />as a true point guard whose first<lb />priority was to get his teammates<lb />involved.<lb /><lb />Williams had another strong<lb />performance in Game 4 of the<lb />Western Conference Finals, scor-<lb />ing 31 points with nine assists<lb />despite reports before the game<lb />that he was experiencing flu-like<lb />symptoms. At some points in the<lb />game Williams was virtually<lb />unstoppable while drawing San<lb />Antonio Ts best defender and NBA<lb />All-Defensive first team member,<lb />Bruce Bowen. Williams blew by<lb />Bowen on several occasions to<lb />finish at the rim, pulled-up for<lb />jump shots when given space and<lb />caused havoc for the rest of the<lb />San Antonio defense with his and<lb />Carlos Boozer Ts unstoppable pick-<lb />and-rolls.<lb /><lb />It Ts going to be tough for the<lb />rising star Ts respective teams<lb />to go on the road during these<lb />Conference Finals, where home<lb />teams have a record of 6-1. And<lb /><lb />it Ts tough to watch the two play-<lb />ers lay it all on the line only to be<lb />out-gunned by the deeper, more<lb />experienced teams they are facing.<lb />Each of these players is only<lb />22 years of age, which makes<lb />it unreasonable to expect James<lb />to carry his team past the veteran<lb />Pistons and for Williams to lead<lb />his young, inexperienced team<lb />past the loaded roster of the Spurs.<lb />But it has been evident in their<lb />play that both of these players<lb />are doing everything in their<lb />power to help their teams advance.<lb />Whether it Ts James penetrating the<lb />defense and slamming it home for<lb />one of his patented oSportscen-<lb />ter ? highlight dunks or Williams<lb />hitting near impossible pull-up<lb />jumpers:<lb /><lb />Even if both the Jazz and<lb />Cavaliers and eliminated from<lb />playoff contention we should<lb />all take a moment to tip our hat<lb />and show a little respect for how<lb />these two young stars are playing.<lb />Even though things aren Tt look-<lb />ing good in 07, it Ts not a stretch<lb />predicting the two could meet in<lb />the NBA Finals a few years down<lb />the road.<lb /><lb />This writer can be contacted at<lb />sports@theeastcarolinian.com<lb /><lb />NN el<lb /><lb />Refuse to pay retail.<lb /><lb />Great selection of famous catalog clothing!<lb /><lb />atalog<lb />rayararsesceyel<lb /><lb />A Division of U.B.E. ,<lb /><lb />; (<lb />210 E-Fifth TSt. 252.758.8612.
